Second visit here the food was better. The fried oysters basket was excellent!! Live music and cold beer during our lunch with a beautiful waterfront view inside the place with good A/C blasting is a reason for a great review of this place.

Had ourselves some fried smelts and corona, sitting by the water, listening to the steel drums!. I love the vibe of Matlacha!

We were specifically looking for a spot on the water where we could eat fish tacos. This place was recommended by our kayak guide, so we ventured in. From the outside, it looks uninviting and worse than a dive! Don't let that scare you. The solid blue double doors on the outside are the front doors even though they look like back doors. You could also enter by walking around the right side directly to the dockside seating area. Regardless, just walk in! Seat yourself and one of the friendly wait staff will be there shortly to serve you. Beer is priced reasonably, and so is the food. We both ordered tacos -- fish tacos and shrimp tacos, as well as a side of Beach Bread. Oooooh, YUM! Get the Beach Bread! You MUST order the Beach Bread! It's bread with garlic, blue cheese, and mozzarella all melted and topped with bits of tomatoes. Soooo good! The tacos were also yummy, but I do wish they were made with cabbage, not lettuce. The best part about this place is the view. It's located right on the water and there are a ton of seating options either inside or outside that provide a water view. It's a casual spot for good eats, and will likely be our #1 spot to return when we come back to Matlacha!

I'm rating this place as a restaurant, not as a bar. This place would be great to come to for live music & some drinks. We stopped in on a Wednesday for the "all you can eat fish". They have it on Wednesday & Friday. Our server was very friendly & fast. The bar/grill is located on the water, with half the building out over the water. You're able to sit inside or outside. I'd vote for sitting outside because of the view & the inside is pretty dated. The patio/dock seating area offers a great view of the water. It's neat to watching the dolphins & birds. It only took about 7 minutes for us to get our food. For $9.99 you get all you can eat fried fish, fries, a dinner roll & cole slaw. First up, the fish. The fish is a lightly breaded fish filet that has a great flavor, it's not overly greasy, but not dry at all. The batter is crispy & light. The French fries are probably from a bag, they were okay, some of them were a little squishy, I would've liked crispier fries. The cole slaw was nothing to write home about, it didn't have much of a flavor, maybe a little more sweet would help it. The dinner roll was dense & cold, I didn't eat it. It was a LOT of food. I had one extra piece of fish but I only had it because I felt like if it's all you can eat, you should give it your best shot! Overall the fish was fresh & hot, not to greasy & very flavorful. The rest was okay. I'd eat here again but it's not on my 'must have' list.

I have been here four times and EVERY time the service has been kind and prompt, the view has been outstanding, and the food has been perfect! My favorite is the Shrimp and Chips and the beach bread! I will take everyone I can here and recommend it always.

Great service, the food was really good and what can you say about the million dollar view.

Had a craving for fresh seafood, and Bert's Bar and Grill was somewhere I hadn't tried in Matlache. I snagged the last seat on the deck facing the dock and was feeling lucky. Not a cloud in the sky, and the place was packed. Live music (that I even liked!) a very down to business server, which I also liked because she had lots of tables and she hustled. I got the Shrimp and chips. It tasted wonderful, fresh and just the right amount. Price was reasonable, and the location was a 10!

Always enjoy this place..great shrimp!! Music always the best and servers very friendly!

What a great place. Watching dolphins and manatees swim by. Drink some cold beverages, peel some shrimps, eat a burger. Live music from wednesday thru sunday. Its a bit of a find but yelp helped out. Tourists and locals mingle and relax. If possible i will come back

Sorry in advance for this rant. Stopped by Bert's in the evening for drinks & appetizers on the deck so as to enjoy the view. That part would get a 4 star rating from me. But come on, people. Do you HAVE to bring all your doggies to a restaurant? Of the 10 tables in the area I was in, 5 of them, FIVE, had pets with them, straining at leashes, bumping/sniffing patrons at adjacent tables and so forth. I even saw a server take a dog bowl to be filled with water, I presume. Enough! If I want to eat in a kennel I'll pack a meal and go to the local vet's waiting room. People - class up and leave your fur babies at home or in the car at evening. Bert's, you ought to consider a no dog policy.

We had some time and wanted to try a local dive... found this and thought it could work! We absolutely loved it! We got fish tacos and fish & chips. Best fish and chips I have ever had, light and not greasy! So great! His tacos were so good! Got a pitcher of shock top too :) $30 later and we were full, comfortable, happy, and planning our next visit! The live music inside and out was so great too! We think we found d our new favorite "dive"... see you tomorrow bert!

Great location, good food, horrible service. Fletch was our server. Sat for 20 min before busser took our drink order, and the rest of our experience consisted of going to bar for drinks and inside to get condiments etc. never did coleslaw with meal. Was not even busy. Too bad it was such a bad experience considering potential.

  • Kathy D.

Mediocre food at best! Music was great, steel drum soloist. Water view is very nice. We had the grouper sandwich and it was bland. House made chips were soggy.

Didn't really eat there only had drinks n appetizers. Smelts weren't bad but the tuna dip not worth money. Service was horrible have to have lots of patience.

  • Walter K.

Heard about the fish tacos here so naturally had to try them. They were amazing. The homemade chips were just ok. The fish inside the tacos is mahi. Little less green more fish would've been better but that's not really a complaint.

Top notch view and atmosphere. Mike, our waiter, was awesome with a capital A. Very personable, attentive and patient with our newbie diner questions. Great live music playing. I ordered blackened grouper and it was quite tasty. Cooked beautifully. My salad was 2 thumbs down with wilted lettuce and not so great ranch. Onion rings are big, greasy and fried. Yum. Homemade chips are yummy too, wish they had a cool dipping sauce. Fries were crispy and hot. My husband had a philly cheese steak and liked it fine. Fried shrimp good, talapia good and coleslaw good. Chairs were UNcomfortable. Food was good, service was excellent but probably won't be back. Nice place for a experience though.

Went on a Thursday night just to see what all the hype was about, we had rented a cottage in the area. If your looking for one step beyond a dive bar this will be for you. Once you get past the plain jane front entry ala Road House, you enter the bar area with a pool table. Entering into the restaurant area we were greeted pretty quickly and seated outside. We knew there was a band this evening and they were beginning to set up, and the inside area is would be pretty loud with a band, since it is a pretty small place. Once seated we ordered, garlic wings on a scale of 1-5 , 5 being highest, they were 2, not real meaty, fried, and bottle garlic chunks poured on top, nothing special. We both ordered red fish rubens, both a 4, fish was very fresh, house potato chips were disappointing, mine were very soggy, 2 at best. Pasta salad a 1, soggy. Server was a 3. As we were leaving the band began playing, not sure of the name, but they were a 4.5 playing a combo of rock, blues.

I loved this place. Understand: This is a bar. They also serve food. They serve unpretentious local seafood in limited preparations. If you are a food snob, this is probably not your place. If you are just generally a snob, this is definitely not your place. If you are the jackwagon who sat behind us and ordered an "Arnie Palmer" with an "extra twist and one half of lemon," eat a shoe. Are you and Mr. Palmer friends? Does he also insult the waitstaff about the "inferior fillet"of grouper? But I digress.... The outside deck is awesome, with shaded and non-shaded areas. I burnt the crap out of my face. Well played, tourist. Anyway...they have live music most of the time with steel drums, local bands and touring groups. Check. They have cold beer. Check. They have reasonably priced peel-and-eat shrimp with Old Bay and lemon. Check, check. They make their own chips. Delicious. The fried oysters were super yummy. The fish nuggets were okay. Did I mention that the beer is cold? The waitresses are super busy and nice. When you stop at Bert's, you'll see families, couples, biker families and couples, golfing parties, locals and tourists. This makes it my style. Edit: We ended up going there almost every day. There wasn't one thing I had that I didn't enjoy. Burgers are gigantic. Fried shrimp so well done. Wings were big, non-breaded, with great sauce. "Beach bread" was so yummy. Drinks always cold and fast. Fish fry night was YAY! Yeah....go there.

Three of us went to Bert's on a Monday evening. We had top notch service provided by Mike. This guy was on top of it, we thought we had our own personal server. We sat outside on the deck and enjoyed the fantastic scenery along with our meals. The Blackened Shrimp Dinner, Caesar Salad with Shrimp, and the Chicken Philly Sandwich were all delicious. Don't forget to try the homemade chips.

Cool dive bar/restaurant with live music. Came on a Thursday night and Deb's band was playing til 11pm. Good rock music. Small space up front to dance. Gets busy and packed but service is good. Right on the water which I'm sure is a great view during the day.

Always hopeful, three of us stopped in at Berts for a dinner and music after a stop at the German-American social club Oktoberfest. Between sets, empty back dining room except us and another table. Wait staff visited briefly to get drink order. That was the smoothest part of the visit as we rarely ever saw the waitress again. She couldn't come get our dinner order and barely delivered a plate of wings. When they came, we had given up on eating or drinking. Bring the check so we can find food!

Seemed tired and run down. Burger was good and my friends thought the fish was ok. I don't need to go back.

We stopped in for some music and apps. Beer and wine only, no liquor here. Music, atmosphere, and service was very good. We had the homemade chips and beach bread. Both were very good, the chips were light and crispy. It got 4 stars due to the awesome atmosphere and location.

    (4)
  • L B.

Love the atmosphere. Great to sit on the dock and eat. The food is ok, it's good bar food, at least that was my order choice. I've visited twice since vacationing, so I did have a return and I'm sure I will be back again. Maybe I will order something different next time. The beers were nice and cold!!! The staff was very slow! We had to go looking for our server when the food was gone and apparently we were served two beers and she was not returning. Oh well, like I said, I will probably return. I love the area

    (3)
  • Chris R.

Food was all mediocre. Clam chowder was to loose for me. Chips were soggy and stale. Seafood platter was ok but not very generous. Most if not all the fish is not local. Why if your restaurant is on the waters if the gulf of Mexico would you serve Swai from Indonesia. Highlight was the Coleslaw. Service was ok. Music was really good blues band playing Srv, Alllman brothers, etc.

    (2)
  • Marc K.

cannot comment on the food, we walked out after waiting over an hour for it to come out.

    (1)
  • Lisa G.

You go for the band. Absolutely not the terrible food. Everything served in plastic, on plastic. And the place is on water and leans terribly. I sat on one butt check all night - working my right leg muscle to death. But the bad was very entertaining. It's looks like a guaranteed local good time.

  • John P.

Food is so so and service is non existent , for a small place you would expect better, but go somewhere else if you want dinning on the water. They had a steel drum player that was annoying to say the least. Play more talk less.

  • Elizabeth R.

I am afraid to post a good review because this is one of those Florida gems you don't want to loose its rustic charm. We drove by and the line of cars outside prompted us to whip a U-turn and check it out. It was filled with an eclectic group of people, 1/3 bikers, 1/3 tourist and even a handful of snowbird types and boaters. We had a burger, it was a mammoth! Two of us couldn't finish it, but it was spectacular! Paired with cold drinks and a steel drum player; this 'snack' was picturesque. Our server was friendly and ever so accommodating, she even served our pup first :). Definitely going to make sure we pass through here again.

Stopped by Bert's on a Wednesday for the AYCE fish fry. Before I get to the food, I'll talk briefly about two other points that are brought up in a lot of other reviews. First, I had no problem parking. When it's really busy, you may have to park at most a five minute walk, but I didn't find it to be bad at all. Second, the restaurant's site advertises a "million dollar view." While the restaurant is on the water, I'd say million dollars might be pushing it. I sat outside and saw the water, but the view is kind of limited in my opinion. I ate by myself while on a business trip, so I can only vouch for the fish fry. Fish was very good. It tasted fresh and was very lightly fried. Each plank was about 95% fish and only lightly battered which I prefer. They were definitely not hiding inferior fish under a pound of batter. Fish fry comes with fries and cole slaw. Fries were pretty standard, and I enjoyed the slaw. It was on the sweeter side which tends to be my preference. Great experience and great food at this establishment. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere but worth a trip to find.

Great fun and great music. The Carribean sound of the steel drum set the mood for our early dinner. We ordered the fish tacos and they were amazing. Fresh ingredients! Others in our party raved about the fish and chips. Drinks were reasonably priced and the view is amazing. You can walk out on the dock and take some fabulous pictures. The waitress was informative and our service was great. We will definitely be back. Some of the freshest seafood ever!

Parking is horrendous (you might need to park a block awayin their gift shop lot) and service is "iffy", but the place bleeds of the quirky local color that is Matlacha's signature and worth your time. The entire back area tilts unmercifully, so you need to decide whether to feel like you're going to roll into the bay or lean upstream. That said, I had the BEST pizza of my life, with a great view! It was a hand thrown from scratch wafer-thin light flaky crust with vegetarian deluxe toppings, including green & black olives. ($9 for 10 inches). I also had a great $4 tossed salad with a flavorful Catalina dressing. Everyone was raving about their homemade chips.

First off, if you go to Bert's, know what you're in for. I have it on good authority that it's on the "Top Dive Bars in SW Florida" list. I don't think it nearly earns that illustrious honor - I've been to too many dive bars in my life, and Bert's is four star by comparison to many of them - but this isn't somewhere to take your mother with the sanitary wipes and a wine pairing list in her pocket. If you're about ambiance and magical food, skip this joint. If you're up for a super casual "locals" place to kick back, have a cold beer (of the Budweiseresque variety), eat (yes, mediocre) food, listen to some good music (famous with the locals - we were lucky one day, unlucky another), and enjoy friendly service, hit Bert's. Last note: I will add to what other reviewers have said... when these guys are busy, parking right outside is a nightmare. There is more Bert's parking across the street (look catty-corner); you might have luck there. If not, it isn't as if you'll have to break distance records by parking elsewhere in Matlache and walking to your fish & chips. :)

  • Laura L.

What do I think about Bert's? Well, If you like 1) dive bars 2) seafood 3) water views, this is your place. In hindsight, I think peeps may come here more for the atmosphere than the food. Except that they 4) have stuffed animals on the wall (think deer, marlin, alligators) so if that's a turn off, best not step through the door. What else? 1 - Feel like playing for your dinner? They have the Maine Lobster claw crane game. Twisted? Yes. Fun? Maybe after a few shots. 2 - Parking is horrendous, so be prepared, but you may get lucky. 3 - Don't want to sit? There's a pool table, electric juke in the main room and of course, live music Tues-Sat. 4 - Restrooms are singles, so be patient. 5 - Wings - not all they are cracked up to be but try the fried oysters and homemade chips. 6 - Plenty of bottled beer and a few on draft (even a gluten-free option), and you can even get a split of bubbly if you're so inclined. My final verdict? I like! My only regret - that I didn't get back here more often on my visit. Next time, next time....

Awesome atmosphere with great food! Right on the water, they also had live music with an island feel. My friend had a burger and loved it; not too greasy. The rest of us had fish and shrimp tacos. Living in FL l, I've had my share of these but, this is my fave so far. The homemade chips make it extra good. Would highly recommend.

  • Ed B.

Burt's setting is old, but it right on the water and the shrimp is fresh and local. It comes from the shrimp boat on the other side of the channel. It is excellent any way you want it- hot, cold, fried, buffalo sauce. The fish dip is tasty, too ( do be sure to ask for some jalapenos to add in the dip). They fill up early, so plan ahead.

Deke is right about the parking, it's a zoo. We were visiting Cape Coral for a friends wedding. My bud is a local and seeing how it was Good Friday, recommended we meet at Berts for the fish fry. Initially we parked about a block east on the street, in front of what looked like an empty Chinese restaurant, but I was uneasy we'd be towed. It was Friday night and Berts was packed. My wife and I put our name on the list for a table (we were expecting 5-6 more to show) and went outside on the deck to hear a guy playing a pan (Steel Drum). My friend called saying he would be there in about 10 minutes so we went back out front to meet him. While there a family left who were parked directly in front of the bar. I told my wife to hold the spot and went to get the car. Now you should know about my wife. She is 65, small and very shy. She doesn't get into confrontations with ANYONE (except me, but I probably deserve it). As I was headed to get our car a guy in a van tried to pull into the empty slot and SURPRISE, she stood her ground, right in front of him. Words were exchanged, he tried to snake her by saying the family that just left had been saving the spot for HIM. And he even pulled forward threatening to run her over, BUT SHE HELD FIRM. As he backed out the cad flipped her the bird! My friend eventually showed, we ate, drank and listened to a 15 year old kid play the Blues like he was already a star. Mike Imbascani, he's got the touch, keep an eye out for him. I like Berts, it's a dive, loud and noisy, but the food is good and cheap, the beer is cold and the entertainment (if Mike is any indication) is top notch. Just be prepared to fight for a parking spot.

  • Day W.

Don't go there for the food as it was mediocre. Great music, and view. Service was OK. Stone crab, @ $20/lb, weren't fresh. Menu has only grouper @ market price, and tilapia @ about $10. After the dried clams and no where near fresh stone crabs, we didn't dare to order anything else. Parking is very limited.

    (2)
  • Danielle B.

HORRIBLE SERVICE and bad food! Just ate lunch here and it took over TWO hours to get our meals! The burgers were under cooked and the fish tacos tasted fishy (which means the fish wasn't fresh). Definitely will not be back. Ever.

    (1)
  • Kerry B.

Food was over-priced and just so so. Love the outdoor view. If you are a non-smoker with kids like us, only go if there's a breeze to dissipate the smoke that lingers over your table from the inconsiderate smokers all around you. I guess I'm just not used to eating with smoke all around me. I don't know why restaurants don't at the least segregate smokers to one area.

    (2)
  • Dee S.

This is my fav local place for fresh-off-the-boat peel n eat shrimp and a great view. You'll find the service is usually pretty slow but that's okay..just sit back and relax. Better yet, start a conversation with the people around you- you'll find all kinds of characters here, tourists and locals alike. Try to snag a table outside and don't bother getting all dressed up, you'll just look and feel totally out of place :-)

    (5)
  • Laura R.

Food was good, very fresh. The view was amazing and there was plenty of seating outside. Some of the clientele was a little rough, but everyone was friendly and everything tasted good. Parking was a little tricky...start looking before Bert's!

What to say great fish and chips It would get another star but parking sucks I love Bert's

  • Barney C.

This is one of those places that jerks with a bad attitude seem to dislike and give 1 or 2 stars. If you are mellow and ready to have a mellow time, don't be afraid. Just act like the locals do and you'll be fine, maybe one will even talk to you about his mangy dog. A little bit of the Keys just minutes from the graveyard of Cape Coral, get some fresh-fried potato chips or darned good pizza, they don't do much wrong here and they could charge for the view. Live music on Thursdays through the weekends as I recall, get a room a few doors down. Purists shouldn't worry too much about 10 years from now, it has solid ownership and it looks like he's not interested in changing a thing. Ask the owner how many people have been killed at Bert's over the years, he'll tell you a nice yarn. This is OLD FLORIDA. If you don't get it, don't knock it, and don't come back!

  • Signe K.

Unpretentious, I love sitting outdoors on a dock! Oyster app was pitiful. They were the tiniest oysters I've ever had. They were deep fried and dried up. Berts would be better off using the ones in the plastic jars at Publix. I had a cup of yummy new england clam chowder and a club soda. My date had the fried grouper special which he liked. He also drank 3 miller lites in a bottle. The bill was $36.00. My app was a shocking $9.00 for a small handful of large crumbs. Should ordered a burger. Now I know what not to order. I noticed the bar was pretty full at 11:00 am. Nobody there I would want to sit next to.

    (2)
  • Eric J.

Great view and service was good. Live entertainment most nights. Worth the trip.

    (4)
  • Zachary S.

they guy fly fishing off the back dock said that Bert's used to be a tough place, and that one guy got thrown through the glass windows out front during a fight, cut his neck and bled out. Then our lunch came.

  • David P.

Great place to have a beer and something to eat. Has a great view of the bay. I ate there 3 nights ago with my wife and kids. My wife and I ordered their all you can eat fish fry. The fish was perfectly cooked and was quite delicious. The only draw back that I can say is that the area where we were seated was quite dark which makes it difficult to see what you were eating. Man I hope I was eating fish LOL jk. It was quite affordable.

    (4)
  • Angel R.

Bar food, slow service. It's a bar, with food on the side. Disappointing as everyone raves about this place. Only shining point is the Mac and cheese bites, and nice spot in the water.

  • Debbie E.

Total dive bar that locals, bikers, fisherman, and tourists alike frequent. Lots of music as entertainment. PHENOMENAL view of San Carlos Bay (its located near marker 55 and the Matlacha Bridge). Docking for boats available. Don't go for dinner. The seafood 'dinners' are sub par. The pizza not bad but not great. The service is horrible. For all of the times I've been there they have never got an order right. The waitstaff always seems to be shorthanded and trying to get a refill of beer in the dining area while eating is a small miracle (different in the bar area). And they don't have set uniforms to wear, which I'm OK with, but the outfits that they wear have not only appalled me at times, most recently the day-glo orange leg warmers with matching skirt that was MUCH too short made me feel a little nauseous. If you want beers and company, good place to go. If you want a decent meal, try some of the other places within walking distance to here.

  • Jim F.

We love Pine Island and Bert's is the perfect reflection of this quirky place. The view out back is wonderful and goes well with a cold beer. The food is consistently good but the homemade chips are the "must have" item. Lots of live music but parking is tough in the evening.

    (4)
  • Liz K.

Neither here nor there. Cool local dive bar, but really nothing special. Food's decent, drinks are the same.

    (3)
  • Urban H.

Wow! I cannot believe this place doesn't have a single review. Probably because those lucky enough to frequent it have better things to do than yelp. Lucky bastards. Anyway, I had the pleasure of drinking beer mid-day on the rear deck on a picture-perfect Pine Island day. The inside was dark and musty, much like my women. The regulars (old hippies, shrimpers?) were laughy and drunk and it was only noon on a Tuesday! Tourists (like me) seemed to enjoy the standard fish-town bar food and suds, and it might be the most laid-back place on the planet. Nestled amongst the art-deco galleries dotting the main drag, it's just west of the "fishingest" bridge in the country. A must-see while on Pine Island.

    (5)
  • Bonnie G.

Delicious, reasonable food... I had the fried shrimp platter which included 12 good-sized shrimp, cole slaw and homemade potato chips for $12.95. Others in my group enjoyed the grouper sandwiches too. But service was terrible. It was slow getting the food and then we had to practically hunt down the server to get the bill. Maybe hire more help both in the kitchen and on the floor for busy times?
