High Cholesterol at Whataburger
Calorie intake is the main concern for people with high cholesterol while dining at a fast-food restaurant like Whataburger. Well, you can always try the Lighter & Smaller options from the menu to cut down your fat intake. Opting for grilled sandwich or burgers are preferred compared to double meat or triple meat cheesy burgers which contain high cholesterol.

Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I like to think of my experience at Abuelos as a glorified Taco Bell, service was delayed and as a true foodie at heart I can take a hit with service as long as the food performs. Unfortunately the bland taste and lack of variety was anything short from true authentic Mexican food, aside from that beautiful location to eat an over priced taco.

I've enjoyed this Abuelo's a few times while driving back from a day at Disney, it's a fairly convenient location. Their food is good and their mints are even worth mentioning. My main complaint is the kids meals. My daughter had the kids nachos, which were nothing more than a couple of large tortilla chips with cheese melted on top. No meat, no beans, nothing else. It just looked like a big plate of orange. Other than that, I've been mostly satisfied with the restaurant. Their flaming cheese is a fun appetizer and their margaritas are pretty good.

Friday night and the place was slammed. Had to wait to get a table but that just happens sometimes. Food was fantastic. Our waitress (Sayida, hope the spelling wasn't way off) was really busy but still treated us great. Really impressed with her customer service. Will definitely come back next time I'm in town.
(5)Callie M.
We love eating at Abuelos! Try the appetizer dip sampler (it comes with Avocado Cream which we swap for traditional Guacamole) and the Chicken Zucchini. OMG the Chicken Zucchini is delicious. If the weather is nice, sit on the patio. It's first come-first serve seating (still need to ask to be seated outside) and there's rarely a wait (even when there is a wait inside). The ambiance is great. Live music sometimes!
(5)Rachel M.
I love this place the green chili sauce on the enchiladas must try. Not very authentic but still really good and clean. Service slow at times just need more help. Lots of Menu choices and drinks are really cold and delish.
(4)Dawn W.
Our waiter Kyle was great and that's where the good ends. I ordered the Monterrey and the only positive was the mashed potatoes (yea mashed potatoes at a Mexican restaurant). Everything else was covered in creamy sauce and cheese. I love cheese as much as the next guy but this was just too much. I couldn't even identify what exactly I was eating. My hard shell taco was so soggy that it was falling apart in my hands and the refried beans were more bean soup juice and no beans at all. Go to Tapatios instead or the food truck on US 98 near the parkway if you want good Mexican.

As Tex-Mex goes in Lakeland, Abuelos is the bees-knees. My family frequents this establishment quite often and we have never had any real, troubling issues with service. The servers are always as polite, friendly, and efficient as possible. We always receive our food in a timely manner, and the food is always prepared and presented well, and always warm and fresh. Their bathroom, bar, and dining area are kept clean and neat. I can't comment on the kitchen because I've never seen it, but here's hoping they keep it as well maintained as the rest of the building, if not better. We are so pleased with their quality of food and service that we are also using Abuelos to cater an event we are holding. I'll update my review after the event, to give an account and testament to their catering service.
(5)Geno K.
Just slightly better than average American style Mexican food. Ordered the chicken and steak fajitas. The steak was bland - stick with chicken. The fajita sides were adequate, but too little chicken and steak. Compared to most Florida restaurants, you don't really get much value here. But it's tough to find decent Mexican food here, so it's... just ok.
(3)Pete W.
Seems like no one in Lakeland is being honest about reviews, so I'm going to buck the trend. This place can be summed up as expensive, poorly interpreted mexi-merican food. Pesos in South Lakeland used to be this really killer fix for good mex, but sadly they are shut down now. Try the taco trucks around town or Mega Mercado; much better alternatives.
(1)Phyllis B.
Really cool building. Awesome decor. Friendly staff. To say the food was subpar would be doing it a favor. I've had better enchiladas at Chilli's and I absolutely detest Chilli's.
(1)Camila C.
Good food but once I came in with my family a couple months ago. We walked up to the hostess and my mother said "we are meeting my daughter here ..oh I see her over there!" And the hostess replied "oh I don't speak Spanish...." in a rude tone and walked off. Me and my friend looked at each other and we said "she was speaking English...." We were angry and surprised. It was the rudest tone we have ever encountered in a restaurant. Just the look that the hostess had was uncomfortable and awful. Didn't want to come back because of that but I am here again and the service was better.
(3)Amanda B.
The food here is supposed to be tex mex. A swing and a miss. Portions are extremely small, and service is sub par. No thanks.
(1)Duane D.
We came here once while staying in Lakeland. I like it a lot. Cool restaurant with a cool inside decor that makes you feel like you are sitting on an outdoor porch. We got a coupon from our local hotel for a free appetizer. We used it on the nacho sampler that had two types of cheeses and four types of salsa. Awesome! The food was equally good and plentiful. The best part was the bacon-wrapped jalapeño cheese-stuffed shrimp! All in all, a great chain-style Mexican restaurant. I would go out of my way to come back again.
(4)Matt W.
I was out of town on business... I saw an ad for it in a local publication. I sat at the bar since I was alone. Service: Not great. Perhaps the bartender was understaffed. But I sat for a couple min before being able to order a drink. Then took a while before I could order food. Never checked on me during the meal. And I'm currently writing this with the manager chats with the guests next to me... I have no water or alcohol in either of my glasses. Food: Salsas were great. Which for me is the number one thing I judge a Mexican place by. I ordered the carnitas tacos. Food came out quickly. Tacos were pretty decent. The pork was cooked and seasoned well. The cilantro lime rice is HORRIBLE. I LOVE cilantro. But this was not good. You have to be careful when cooking cilantro it gets that soapy flavor and then they mix it with lime. It tasted like Citrus Dawn Soap. Beans were eh.. Probably not made in house. But I don't know. Over all I'd probably come back and be even more cautious with what I order. I feel that a lot of these foods are very commercial and processed.
(3)Desire J.
Great atmosphere and friendly servers. But the food barely qualifies as mexican food. But that's to be expected in Florida. They seriously have no right to call themselves a "mexican food embassy"
(2)Third P.
Great ambience. Unfortunately on several separate visits, the chips were soggy, the food was undercooked (raw! in spots) and most frighteningly, the chicken nuggets we ordered for the kids was cooked on the ouside and completely raw/pink on the inside. I usually cut into nuggets to check them and this was just b-a-d. Three times is more than enough to dissuade me. Won't be back.
(1)Jim T.
Large menu had more than just traditional Mexican fare. Service was good. My glass was refilled more times than I could count. Clean, brightly lit place with a sort of courtyard theme in the main dining room. Would definitely return.
(3)Amber M.
I'm not one that's all about chain restaurants. When it comes to Mexican usually the small hole in the wall, strip center restaurants are the way I prefer. Abuelo's is like the Cheesecake Factory of Mexican restaurants... And I pretty much always get the same thing "MI ABUELO'S MANJAR: Grandfather's favorite meal features three stacked enchiladas layered with beef, cheese and chile con carne. Topped with two eggs" I mean come on that makes ya hungry, right? I'll still always perfer eating at the one in Amarillo but so nice to have one nearby in Lakeland
(5)L Z.
This is my FAVORITE restaurant, but the low stars are for the new dish they are using to serve their salsa in for the chips, holds about 3 tablespoons of salsa. UPDATE: I added another star to my review, after the manager explained the small sampling dish for the salsa. Our favorite salsa is anything but the green. I want to add, the food and service at Abuelo's is 5 STARS.
(3)Shantai M.
Hands down absolutely delicious food! The ambiance is lighthearted and family oriented. The drinks are fantastic and the prices for the portions are very fair. I have lived in Lakeland for 9 months and I've been to this restaurant numerous times. The food & customer service will draw you back! The chicken fajitas are my favorite! You're guaranteed to take home some leftovers. Give it a try if you haven't already, you won't regret it.
(5)Mateo H.
Very good Mexican place. Great ambience and tasty food. I took my brother and parents there. They love Tex-Mex and live in Houston. They loved it.
(4)Bill P.
The food was fantastic. The place is a little noisy with non- Mexican music thumping in the background for no apparent reason. We took friends for their first trip and he couldn't eat all his fajitas and she was full with just one burrito. I downed 3 enchiladas but should have only ordered 2. I would give it give stars but we were seated for over 5 minutes before anyone came to our table and that was only after I pushed the "call server" button on the ziosk machine. She ended up being adequate as we sat too many times with empty glasses, which is not cool when eating spicy food.
(4)Tammy S.
Today was our first time dining here. It was highly recommended to us by a friend. All I can say is; amazing food, excellent service, wonderful atmosphere, and large portions. We will definitely be coming back.
(5)Kelly C.
Good drinks and good food! We really enjoyed it. I had the fried tilapia tacos and they were delicious! Good service too.
(5)Angela H.
Have you had your injection of cheese, fried substance and beans? If not, come and get it! There is nothing authentic about Mexico here and the only plus I can think of is that it has a nice first impression with the design layout. The lunch specials are about $8 and up. Every table is given a basket of chips and generically bland salsas. My taco and avocado enchilada was nothing to boast about. Service seems scripted but done with a smile.
(1)Bob V.
I usually get a very good meal and good service at this Abuelo's. Chicken medallions are excellent. Call ahead seating is a good idea especially on a Friday or Saturday. My personal favorite is the Mi Abuelo's Manjar, enchiladas with a couple of over easy eggs on top. It's a Mexican Royal!!!
(4)Ray B.
So my favorite Mexican chain restaurant; this location delivered the goods with solid service and quality. In March the outside seating was a good option.
(4)Randall G.
Joined friends here for dinner while visiting on a Sunday night because it was one of the only places in town open (much appreciated!). The service for our large group was excellent and the food good. Also liked the good pre-6 p.m. drink specials! Only negative: the lights in the main atrium section were really bright.
(4)Charles L.
Stopped by last night on way back to Tampa from Orlando for dinner. Arrived at 9:58, knowing restaurant's closing time was 10:00. Restaurant was locked and completely dark. Employees were gathered on patio, smoking and drinking. When I asked about restaurant being closed early, I was told restaurant closed on weekdays at 10:00. Again checked my cell phone, as well as dining mate's, both displaying 9:58!. How early does the restaurant close?
(1)Justin S.
I hit Abuelo's at least once every couple of months and have yet to have a disappointing meal there. The restaurant itself is architecturally pleasing, with a nice Spanish/Mediterranean theme to it. The chips/salsa are addicting, and like all Mexican restaurants, I use the chips/salsa to gauge the forthcoming meal. Abuelo's does not disappoint. They bring out one to two baskets of fresh chips and a variety rack of salsas. My personal favorite is the tomatillo pineapple salsa. They bring you out 4 different salsas with spoons in each dish, and if you want the real hot salsa, you have to ask for it. To my knowledge, Abuelo's makes everything from fresh ingredients - nothing microwaved or frozen. The in-season vegetable offerings are always fresh, al dente, and packed with flavor. I rotate between ordering the chimichanga and the chorizo stuffed chicken medallions. The food comes out piping hot, the plate is always too hot to touch, and the portion sizes are generous. The restaurant and the bathrooms are spotless, and very spacious. The prices are in line for the type of restaurant it is. The service has been hit-or-miss there. I've had stellar service and I've had waitresses act like I'm imposing upon them to bring another basket of chips and more salsa. I guess it depends on the day and the direction the wind is blowing. The negatives? Abuelo's has this thing, as many Mexican restaurants seem to have, of putting some kind of sauce over everything they make. Cheese sauce, Vera Cruz sauce, sour cream sauce, red sauce, brown sauce, green sauce, sauce sauce, whatever. I don't mind it being a drizzle to add character and depth, but when your dish comes out bathed in a sea of cheese, that tells me that someone is trying to hide something. I know we Americans are cheese-obsessed, but come on. Let your food stand on its own. I'm definitely a fan and will be back, but I'm not prepared to give it 5 stars. 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4.
(4)Manny R.
The restaurant looks really good from the outside. Inside is pretty mexican and modern. The food is not even close to mexican . I think that this restaurant has a lack of understanding of how mexican should be cooked. I had the Tacos and what a big disappointment. Lack of flavor and texture. The food tasted like gas station food. It looks like they are trying to do a good job cleaning the tables but there is no body that control the quality. I sat down and the table was all wet with pieces of beans on it. Not good at all. Plate presentation in general is poor. I do not recommend this restaurant if you want to experience mexican style cuisine.
(2)Cathi L.
I have never had anything bad at any of the Abuelos that I have eaten ate in my travels. The food is always consistently good and the service is always impeccable. The chips and salsa is the best your gonna find any where.
(5)Sheena D.
Hello Dean. It was not my 1st visit. My husband and I had been before. And the waitress spilt drinks in my new purse lol. She was also very sweet though. This time was the only time I had come and had an experience like this. I trust your judgement and knowing it will be the last. We will visit again. Thanks for your reply and concern.
(3)Chris H.
This place was absolutely horrible!!!! Waited over an hour so one would thin it would be good food. Yeah I was wrong. The fajitas...please do yourself a favor and don't order them. Nothing good about them. The beans were so dry they looked a week old and if you don't believe me, I can provide pictures. The waitress told me thy were 30$ fajitas because they came with three shrimp and limitless condiments. This place sucked and they didn't care which is the worst part. Don't go don't go don't go. Do yourself a favor and go to Taco Bell. It's better food I promise!!!!
(1)Jeff M.
Way overpriced for just so so Mexican. Ordered chile rellenos for takeout and there was nothing to them , one was supposed to have meat and didnt taste hardly any meat at all. Skimpy on the two sides also. Not worth $14 at all . If you are ever in the Norfolk or Chesapeake Va area , eat at Mi Hogars , the best chile rellenos you will ever taste .
(1)Sarah B.
My family dined here on Father's Day for the first time, and overall we had a good experience. The sangria was good and loaded with diced fresh fruit. The chips were hot and fresh and I loved the tomatillo and pineapple salsa. For my entree, I ordered one spinach enchilada and one avocado enchilada with rice and black beans. The enchiladas were both delicious, however I found the black beans to be overly salty. My other family members enjoyed their food as well. I did want to comment on the fact that they list the ingredients of their sides and sauces on the menu, indicating which are vegetarian. This was super helpful and much appreciated. Our server was fantastic and didn't skip a beat, which was impressive since she was about 5 months pregnant.

DOV 08/01/14 Friday night 6:30 pm. Packed. Hour wait but we knew that would probably happen. We eat here about every 6 weeks so we know what we like and are rarely disappointed. We always start off with their regular salsa, do not care for the other two varieties, their chips are thin, hot and very good. We also order Guacamole and it is really good and priced very nicely. I got Enchilada Itzel with refried beans and the Mexican potatoes, delish! Hubby got a ground beef taco and cheese and onion enchilada, beans and rice. Delish! Both dishes were hot and freshly made. Delicious! Sergio was our server and did a great job especially with it being so busy. They quickly clean, bus and turn tables around to seat you quickly. Why is there not one of these restaurants in Wesley Chapel or Tampa area? We need good Mexican food here.
(5)Jane S.
Food quality has gone from excellent to "so so". Black mint leaves in the mohito (which the waitress missed). Tenderloin that wasn't very tender. The other 7 at the table couldn't say more than "it was OK". There was a lot we liked, but the entrees weren't up to par.
(3)Lance L.
I went there w my girl last night and at first I was skeptical about the authenticity of the food, since it seems you cannot find good Mexican food in Central Florida (born in Texas and from a Mexican family) to me the only authentic Mexican restaurant would have the ghosts of Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata sitting at the bar drinking tequila together. I will admit I was very pleased w the meals we had. I had the grande w two fried eggs , that reminded me off home. A large portion w leftovers to boot to eat for breakfast today. I think if you do not know what mexican food is you will not appreciate the flavor and seemless marriage between the ingredients and spices.
(4)Andy B.
Don't even bother. Only the lowest common denominator will like this place. Just like the cattle we saw grazing in here tonight. WAY overpriced for Taco Bell quality.
(2)Liz R.
Good queso app. Not super spicy, but nice flavor. Large portion too. Get the enchiladas - they're known for them. I tried the shredded beef topped with queso and avocado topped with cream sauce. Flavorful beef, but I highly recommend the avocado with cream sauce. Also tried the Tortilla soup, $1.99 for a cup in addition to an entree. Made fresh daily, it was just as I like it - brothy, shredded chicken, avocado chunks and crispy tortilla strips. Restaurant is located in a large, open air mall. We got lost trying to find it and got the tour - nice stores, fair amount of other restaurants too.
(4)Doyle H.
Nice atmosphere. Good food, but not great food. The menu says that the chefs start cooking at 7am because all their ingredients are fresh. I wonder if that includes opening the cans that my burrito's cheese sauce came in. That's right. I ordered a burrito that came with canned cheese sauce ladled on top. They had real cheese, why not melt a bit of that with some fresh salsa onto the burrito? Nope. Canned cheese sauce for you! They're assortment of complimentary salsas were pretty good, although I swear that I've had the smoky salsa before elsewhere. Tasted just like a brand that I get at Publix on occasion. Our waitress was young and still learning the trade. She did well with what she knew, but needed much more training. You don't stop at the table and ask if we need anything unless you're ready to take that order. A drink or food order might be forthcoming, and a "Ok, hold on, I'll be right back," is not the correct reply. I might give them another chance, but all things considered, I'd rather hit the Mongolian Grill just around the corner.

We've been to Abuelo's several times and always found the food, ambiance, and service to be very good...best Mexican in Lakeland.
(4)Carol B.
They write a good menu, but don't execute. I had the lunch soup and salad and they were boring. The "charro" beans strewn over the salad were plain beans straight from the can. No queso, instead a watery "cheese sauce." I'd ordered ground beef but I got chicken, which I kept; probably a good decision. There was remarkably little lettuce and what there was couldn't hold its own against that cheese sauce. The soup came in a bowl the size of their salsa bowl, and was totally uninspired. The portions of both items were skimpy, except for those beans in the salad. Their chips were good-fresh and crisp and not greasy.

Visited Abuelos over the weekend for the first time. The food was delicious and the service was on point. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very welcoming I and the wife will definitely be returning. I do wish that they would be a little more authentic though with they're dishes it was more on the tex-mex side then on the Mexican side but all in all it was pretty good food; but I still miss my carne Asada from back in Chicago. Oh yeah and it seems like management is a little to comfortable here the table sitting behind us was being catered too by what appeared to be a female manager and she was more concerned with her friends than with the rest of the restaurant.

Been here twice this year, once for a staff lunch and once for takeout. Ordered the same thing both times--cilantro-lime rice and a side of fajita chicken. I love the flavor of this rice. I think it's refreshing and light, but fulling at the same time. The chicken also has a great taste and as a person who doesn't really like Mexican food, this is as close as it gets for me. The first time I paid about $12 with tip, the second I paid $8 with tip. Like I said, I had the same thing both times, but I'm not sure if the second time was me getting a break or what. Either way, I was happy. Would return again, but with friends. The restaurant is absolutely lovely and has a great authentic feel to it. Also, for those who order take-out, my order was ready in about 10 minutes which is way awesome for me. I got there, went to the bar and didn't have to wait very long to get it and go. Definitely a plus in my book. And you get chips and salsa too. :)

I just had to base this review solely on palate pleasure. The food was well thought out and divine on the "buds" It begins with light and tasty chips delivered with a trio of salsas; one with heat, one with sultry smoke and a third, green, of tomatillo and mango base--my favorite. My entrée was the tilapia Veracruz. The fish was nicely sautéed, smothered under strips of poblano, green olive, shrimp (I had them hold the scallops) and complemented with yummy cilantro lime rice and sautéed mixed vegetables like red pepper, broccoli and squash. The lunch portion is one filet for $11.29. It truly was a divine meal. The menu is resplendent with innovative twists on Mexican food, a real class act! I could whine that my water glass was not kept full, or that there is a "din" due to the large dining room, or the incessant loud chatter of a woman behind me intent on telling EVERYONE her personal business. But truthfully this is an excellent establishment who offers an excellent varied menu and has high service expectations and efficiency. Can't wait to go back!

This place was wonderful! I'm not sure why other reviewers didn't enjoy it. Our server, Jesse, was very attentive. They start with tons of chips and three types of salsa. There house margaritas were huge and delicious. Our food was amazing. My wife had a few types of enchiladas and I had the steak chimichangas- both were great! We'll definitely be back :)
(5)Uel T.
As far from authentic Mexican food as you can get taco bell comes closer. I asked for cheese on my food do they poorer what looked like velveeta on it.
(1)Lisa K.
I enjoyed mine it was a special , my husband didn't like his , there was hardly any meat in it , there was some red sauce just to hide the fact that there was hardly any meat,in his tacos, that were really greasy from oil, and no cilantro when it showed in the picture, he had to ask for some, but the most important, his pinto beans, seemed like they just opened a can of beans.. No flavor, We will not be back, the wait staff was very good and nice....

All hail the Mexican food gods! I've finally found one that's up to par with what I used to get back home in Oklahoma! Drinks: Happy Hour skinny margaritas for $3.50! Yummy! The S.O. had their top shelf margarita for $5.00 and it was good too, but we both thought mine was better. :) They also have some appetizers & tapas on the happy hour menu, which lasts from 4-7pm and 9pm-close. Appetizer: I signed up online for their e-club and got a coupon for a free appetizer. We tried the dip sampler ($7.99) that comes with regular queso, chili con queso and an avocado ranch dip. They were all awesome. Fresh, thin tortilla chips & salsa are complimentary, as usual. I could've had these appetizers for my meal and been satisfied. Dinner: I had a chicken enchilada w/ sour cream sauce, a pork carnitas enchilada w/ green chile sauce, refried beans and papas (mashed potatoes). He had the Monterrey combo that had a chile relleno, FOUR assorted enchiladas (the avocado one was deelish!), a beef taco, refried beans and papas. His plate was HUGE! Every single item was delicious and right on par with the Abuelo's I loved in OKC. Obviously we had no room for dessert, even tho I really wanted the lava cake. :) The service was excellent. Very attentive, but not intrusive. My entree was reasonably priced at $8.99. His gluttony plate (lol) was only $15 and change. We also had 2 margaritas each. Our tab was $44 bucks and oh-so worth every penny. I was just about to give up on the Tampa area's Mexican food (other than Taco Bus, which is good, but still not the same) and I'm so glad I didn't. We will definitely be their newest regulars!
(5)Lauren B.
I hate their food but love their margarita/sangria drink. I would go their weekly for drink but not to eat.
(3)Nicole K.
I recently went here twice in a weeks time because I had heard such great reviews. I was rather disappointed. I thought it to be extremely overpriced for mediocre Mexican food. The first time I went, I met a friend there, and we both got 2 different dishes. Wasn't entirely thrilled with it. The 2nd time, I took my mom there and she got their fajitas and I got a mexican pizza so to speak. Neither of us were impressed with our food and have decided that spending $30 (including the tip) for lunch was not worth it.
(2)Jimmy S.
I think Mexican food is just basic cuisine, not something I would consider gourmet. Food was tasty, but don't go there for drinks, they seemed to run out of alcohol. I had the shrimp mojo, pasta in Mexican garlic sauce, it was good but very oily, and I don't know what Mexican garlic sauce is to compare it, but I would order it again. The chips and salsa was just the way I liked it. Service was well done.
(3)Hli H.
Awesome food. Good service. Located just a little out of the way. They are very accommodating about substitutions with your meals and have some of the best chile relenos I've had. The salsa that comes with the chips is not to my liking, but that's not a deal breaker. The ambiance is good. It's located inside Lakeside Village Mall that's way in the middle of Lakeland-and so it's a pain to try and get there. But, if you're in the area do give this place a try if you like Mexican food.
(5)Peter S.
Love this place, especially happy hour after 9. Great bartenders

I'm going to lead off this review by admitting that Mexican food has never been something that I've enjoyed eating. I'll also say that if my dinner guests want to eat Mexican, I usually don't argue because I'm perfectly okay with learning that I was wrong when it comes to food. So when we ended up in Lakeland late on Friday and my husband wanted to come here, I figured it was worth a shot. I went with the chilled shrimp / fruit salad special, which was palatable. The chopped shrimp was light and its light tang went well with the sweet fruit and the slightly bitter greens. My husband got a combination plate, with a chile relleno and multiple enchiladas. His overall impression was that the food was cooked unevenly and that the enchiladas were poorly made. (He eats much more Mexican than I do and seems to like it just fine, so I have to take his word for it.) The food was okay, but we both left saying "eh" ... and my husband's stomach was still giving him grief a full day later. Long story short: I wouldn't consider this a "step up" or "fine Latino cuisine." Cantina Laredo is fine Latino cuisine. Abuleo's is just a lot of money for what turned out to be a very average meal. Portion size is generous and service is friendly, but I don't think the value is there. I wouldn't return unless someone else insisted--and even then I'd probably try to talk them out of it.
(2)Mandy D.
Very consistent good food and service. Everything is always tasty, haven't ever had a bad experience. Portions are large. I love the Papas and Espinacas for side dishes, and the sangria swirl is excellent!
(4)Gina P.
So Im a recent transplant from Southern California and I take my mexican food seriously as its a "staple" from where I'm from. Visited Abuelo's today and was really happy to find something that reminded me of home. Great service and wonderful food made this experience AWESOME! I ordered a chille relleno burrito that was not on the menu and they happily made it for me. The waitress seemed skeptical about what I had ordered thinking I may not like it... when the food came I was all smiles! It was so delicious !!! Will definetly be back.
(4)Rusty S.
Best in town by far!! If you don't enjoy real Mexican food don't go!! I'm born and raised in Texas and this is as good as it get's in Florida. Enjoy!! Best Happy Hour in town!!
(5)Jessica W.
I really do enjoy eating at Abuelo's. I find that their chips are light and tasty and their salsa is super fresh tasting. I've tried many items on their menu and haven't had a bad experience yet. I find that the service is always outstanding and the atmosphere is fun. I find that the portions are very generous and the prices are quite reasonable. I would really recommend trying Abuelo's!
(4)Carly K.
Seriously as good as a resturant experience gets, wonderful service. Friendly employees. The manager even stopped by the table to chat for a bit. I got the guacamole crepe. I am IN LOVE. I live about 30-40 mins from this location and I can not wait to get a chance to go back. The atmosphere is gorgeous too, the interior decor is gorgeous. mmmm 5 stars indeed!
(5)Sherry D.
Down here on a business trip and decided to try the restaurant. Happy hour margaritas and good recommendtions on yelp. We had a server in training and both she, and her trainer were fabulous. Very friendly, great smiles, lots of recommendations. Had the combo that included chili relleno, chicken enchilada and beef enchilada. Delish! My co-worker had the chili rellenos with the cheesy potatoes with chilies. Both entrees were awesome. Super thin chips with two kinds of salsa - one spicy with habanero (I finished that one!) and one that was smoky and delicious. Margaritas were very good, and great for the price. Would definitely come here againl
(5)HR M.
The decor and setting is very nice. Decent food, but not what I would call authentic. The margaritas are large and tasty. The food is OK, but nothing to go out of your way for.

My wife and I decided to try this place and it was.. alright. It didn't start out well when the waitress came over to get our drink order and then asked if we wanted some queso with our chips and salsa. I wasn't sure if it was just an option or if it cost money (the way the waitress said it made it sound like it was either free or very cheap), because I saw queso on the menu for $6. My wife wanted it though and said yes. And of course it was $6 on the check, sigh. At least it was good. Past that, my wife ordered two enchiladas and the mashed potatoes, and every meal comes with refried beans (which we both dislike). In retrospect we probably should have asked for no beans, but my wife's food came on one plate with everything all running together (there was no space between everything on the plate at all), so that her enchiladas tasted like beans. Not good. I got the fajita chimichangas, and they weren't too bad, just very, very cheesy. I probably wouldn't get them again but my wife tried it and enjoyed them. Dessert was pretty good, we got the chocolate eruption (normal lava cake) and my the pastry's (i forget what they were called) with honey. Edit: Oh, I forgot about the issues before we even sat down. We went in and gave our name, and the hostess said "do you want a pager or give your cell phone number? sometimes the pager doesn't work". So I gave my cell phone number. Luckily we were sitting on the side of the building (there aren't many seats outside) and heard them call our name from the door, because they never got in touch with me on my cell phone.
(2)Serenity N.
I love this chain, but our service here was atrocious. We sat outside, and the table of waiters and even the manager sitting next to us got more attention from our server than we did. Bad link in the chain.
(1)Jay S.
Not authentic at all! If you like paying top dollar for cheese then this is the place.
(1)Nina S.
The food is not bad but try NOT to be/go there when its busy, it's chaos....due to lack of help. Obviously, the place is toooo big for the minimum staff!
(3)Delia J.
I love abuelo's. It is different from chain mexican food, and also is different from every other place in Lakeland. Great atmosphere and service.
(4)Lance S.
I've never had a bad thing on the menu. I love this place. Like another person said, abuelos is not like other chain Mexican reataurants. They are also great with large groups.
(5)Third P.

(1)Richard B.
(5)Kimberly N.
(3)Estefania M.
(2)Justin S.

(4)Camila C.
(4)Chris H.
(1)Geno K.
(1)Matt W.

Great atmosphere and friendly servers. But the food barely qualifies as mexican food. But that's to be expected in Florida. They seriously have no right to call themselves a "mexican food embassy"

Don't even bother. Only the lowest common denominator will like this place. Just like the cattle we saw grazing in here tonight. WAY overpriced for Taco Bell quality.

I love this chain, but our service here was atrocious. We sat outside, and the table of waiters and even the manager sitting next to us got more attention from our server than we did. Bad link in the chain.

Not authentic at all! If you like paying top dollar for cheese then this is the place.
(1)Nina S.
The food is not bad but try NOT to be/go there when its busy, it's chaos....due to lack of help. Obviously, the place is toooo big for the minimum staff!
(3)Jim T.
Large menu had more than just traditional Mexican fare. Service was good. My glass was refilled more times than I could count. Clean, brightly lit place with a sort of courtyard theme in the main dining room. Would definitely return.

I hate their food but love their margarita/sangria drink. I would go their weekly for drink but not to eat.

Very consistent good food and service. Everything is always tasty, haven't ever had a bad experience. Portions are large. I love the Papas and Espinacas for side dishes, and the sangria swirl is excellent!

Best in town by far!! If you don't enjoy real Mexican food don't go!! I'm born and raised in Texas and this is as good as it get's in Florida. Enjoy!! Best Happy Hour in town!!

Food quality has gone from excellent to "so so". Black mint leaves in the mohito (which the waitress missed). Tenderloin that wasn't very tender. The other 7 at the table couldn't say more than "it was OK". There was a lot we liked, but the entrees weren't up to par.
(3)Dawn W.
