WOW! What a wonderful stay we had at Equator for our wedding week in Key West. The place is beautiful, spotless, and very, very relaxing. The front desk crew is cheerful, friendly, and funny. Our fellow guests were charming. Have read things about the staffers who maintain the place. Mostly silent, they go about their work with determination and efficiency and are responsible for Equator's good looks. Breakfast is full of variety, good coffee, and interesting companions. The place is highly recommended by us!

I should have listened to Richard earlier. He invited me to visit him and his staff at the Equator Resort in Key West months ago. I finally took him up on his offer and checked in to the Equator, and he was right - I should have checked in months ago. Thursday July 24th: The Equator Resort (818 Fleming St, Key West, FL 33040) is in a prime spot. It's a ten minute stroll to the main commercial street (Duvall Street) and located in a neighborhood where the Pride flags proudly wave. Upon my arrival, Tim greeted me at the front desk. He was cordial and gave me my key after a brief tour of the Equator. The outdoor grounds are a handsome mixture of pools and hot tubs, glass block walls, pottery, fountains, and tropical plants to create intimate areas. The main tanning spot around the pool was lined with neatly arranged deck chairs and cushions. There seemed to be plenty of shaded areas for those who wanted a bit of relief from the oppressive late July sun. If you really want to feel like Hemingway, you can't beat Key West. The natural blue skies and lush green plants offer the perfect palette of colors. The Equator accents those with sunny yellow pool floats, red awnings and cobalt blue tiles and fountains. It's the backyard that I wish I had in Ohio. The Equator has a complimentary happy hour as well as a continental breakfast in the morning until 10am. I passed the happy hour the day of my arrival and that was a mistake on my part. I learned that Happy Hour is the easiest opportunity to meet the other guests, and thankfully, there was a nice variety. The weekend I stayed there were slightly over 38 guests -- and that's off season! I understand that the place can hold nearly 100 visitors. There were young, blonde, Europeans who look like they could be knocked over by a stiff tropical breeze, husky middle-aged bears who loved to frolic in the pool, and older gentlemen who were absolutely sweet. There were a few gym bodies, a bunch of normal-to-chubby dudes, and a few bigger bellied men. That's the recipe for a "something for everyone" resort. My room provided everything I needed: clean beds, a large walk in shower, white waffle-terrycloth robes, an iron, and an in-room safe. The air conditioning made my room a chilly retreat when I couldn't take the sun's rays, and the wall mounted TV brought in several channels, which hosted an info channel with local events, and even provided a half dozen adult channels. Friday Morning: The continental breakfast was more than I expected! A selection of pastries, cereals, bagels, yogurts and fresh fruit topped a buffet. Delicious coffee and juices were waiting for the guests. Speaking of guests, only a couple pulled out their cell phones over breakfast. Most chatted with their friends or partner or looked at the newspaper. How refreshing! I walked up to Duval and reacquainted myself with the bars, the T-Shirt shops, and tourist traps. I was in Key West last year for six quick hours on a cruise stop. My initial reaction was that Key West had been too gentrified with shops that I could find back home (Express, Claire's Boutique, Starbucks), but the truth is that these stores are sparsely intermingled with other great local places owned by the locals. By noon, the sun was too much for me. I headed back to the Equator, took a quick shower and headed to the pool. There I met Tony, a fellow Ohioan. We lazily drifted naked on our yellow pool floats, bumping into each other now and again. Saturday: Accidentally discovered the Key West cemetery! I walked for over two hours discovering history, humor, and most of all - IGUANAS! The place was infested with 100's (1000's?) of the reptiles. I find them fascinating and I easily saw 400 of them sunning themselves on the gravestones. Sunday: Sort of a blur. We went to the Hemingway Home and scoped out Key Lime Pie. There was more floating in the Equator's pool and a wonderful nap. Happy hour at the Equator was especially festive. We were celebrating the 40th birthday of one of the guests replete with cake, song, and kisses. Then, the birthday boy turned the tables on the crowd by surprising his boyfriend of 7 years and proposing to him. Maybe it was the moment, maybe it was the three slushy cocktails, but there were tears along with more cake and song. Monday: Time to go already? I was just settling in! A bit of breakfast and then a big hug from Michael, the manager and a few last minute photos.

Had a great long Memorial Day Weekend. Friendly staff, great crowd of guys from all over, fun happy hour, and a very relaxing and sometimes fun pool environment. Equator is a 5-10 min walk down to Island House and a 10 min or less walk to Duval, so great location on beautiful Fleming Street. Be warned that the property is half upgraded. Some rooms are pretty nice with tile floors and new bathrooms. Some rooms, however, are carpeted and very dated. I noticed that one pool's filter seemed down and the water was green, while the other pool was fine. The included breakfast food was continental and a nice option in the mornings. Happy hour is beer and wine and some frozen rum drinks. Management is very laid back and unobtrusive. I've stayed at Alexanders and Island House. Alexanders is much nicer but quieter/smaller, and better for couples looking for something more low key. Island House is what it is. Equator is a nice compromise for males only, couples or singles. This is not a high end resort, but it's clean, friendly, fun, and has everything you need. As renovations continue, things will continue to get better. I would definitely return.

We have been to Key West several times, 2-3 times per year, this year we decided to give the Equator a try since most of the times we have been there we have stayed right across the street from it. The experience wasn't up to par. The rooms are very small, to be fair, most rooms in KW are small but at that price and street location the comparables are much better. The housekeeping service is not up to par, we asked for extra towels in advance and never they cared for leaving one single extra towels, so we just went to the pool area and picked them up ourselves. The room wasn't cleaned/done properly, they just picked up obvious things like clothes, move them and made the bed. The real turn off was the letter left in the room the last night, reading "It is customary to leave a tip of 10% of the daily room price". Now, I can understand that: (1) KW is expensive, (2) people need to make a living and (3) tipping may not be customary in other countries, but asking for a minimum when your service is not there is just plain wrong. When we complaint about our little issues to the manager, he just did not care. I just think they don't pay attention to details like other guesthouses/hotels in the area do. Other than that our stay in the Equator was good, the people really makes the difference, the other guests were very friendly, clothing is optional, the "educational channels" are a plus. I don't think we will stay at the Equator again, the 3 places across the street are 3 times better on service and amenities and the prices are not really that different.

Currently staying here, rooms are clean, breakfast is good for most if you like carbs. Cereal, breads, and canned fruit salad. We are in room 26 with a private sunning deck. Some of the staff are very friendly, some are not so. Pool and jacuzzi are great and I like the no pressure clothing optional atmosphere. This is our second visit here and would stay again.

I did not find this place exciting or worth the money to stay in. The breakfast is awful. The staff are not friendly, they ignored me when asking for a pool towel. I don't recommend it.

I've stayed here once before and now with my Boyfriend, however I must say that one employee got wasted and influenced my boyfriend to get wasted and leave with him, of course my boyfriend didn't return until the next afternoon. This kind of behavior from a staff member is not excepted and this incident has happened before with the same employee. If you stay here, watch out for Ozie, he'll steal your man just to break your heart.

Enjoyed our stay on off season period. Quiet, clean, updated, tranquil grounds, close to Duval St. eateries, polite& friendly staff and guest. Clusters of buildings with a Cape Cod feel. As I mention it was a off season...yet peak season maybe more partying and fun if that's what you are after. Great place for it... Renovation/updating seems finish in all bedroom units.(except for the back part of the resort finishing the roof top sundeck) in time for Fantasy Ball Oct 21 all week. Did not hear much construction during the day just nail guns here and there.

We really had a blast here!! The rooms are very nice and clean. Our room had a very nice balcony overlooking Fleming St. and we loved it!!! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We will be staying here again. We made some great friends here and we are hoping to make it our annual trip.

Very quaint and cute resort. Staff were very friendly and helpful, especially during the free happy hour (I got wasted! thanks guys lol). The hot tubs and pools were well kept and a nice place to relax during the day/evening. Rooms were very cute. We stayed in room 27 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The shower was awesome! I thought it a bit weird that upon check in, a letter was handed to us asking for a 10% tip to be left upon checking out. After staying there for the night, I did however understand it. The free happy hour as well as the breakfast, there was never any mention or insinuation of a tip...so...that is why they ask for a tip. I'm only dinging one star because it was so expensive! $250/night!

I was somewhat apprehensive before going to Equator because I have not been to a clothing optional resort before. But the environment and people made me feel welcome. We went to Key West on a whim and decided to stay at the Equator. Each room is different and some rooms have a view of the pool. We got a pool side room which was big with a nice bathroom. The manager Gary is very friendly and makes sure you are comfortable with your stay. The best part is the breakfast buffet served by the poolside. Everyone staying at the resort is encouraged to talk to each other and make friends .There are not many rooms and you will get to know each other soon because everyone hangs by the pool. They also have a cocktail hour in the evening with snacks. You can enjoy a glass of wine by the pool and relax. Both breakfast and cocktail hour are included in the room price. A lovely place to relax and let go!

Very classy and private. The facilities were in excellent shape, and the management was friendly and helpful. We look forward to visiting in November!

Yeah..it's just wrong to ask guests to give 10% tip. It's not a bad place, but it definitely needs to improve quite a few things, 1. internet connection is terribly slow. 2. breakfast is bad. canned fruit and toast every day. 3. happy hour is cheap. no one is serving. 4. maids aren't well-trained. they can't answer most questions. seriously, if you already charge so much for rooms, make sure quality and service are good before asking 10% tip.
