I've been to Zodiac before when it was at a different location. I'm glad it stayed downtown and the new place looks great. It's a soothing and comfortable interior. We went on a Wednesday night. It was just me and my husband and one other person seated at the bar. Service was fine (not too much competition) and food was good. It didn't knock my socks off but I enjoyed it. We ordered of the tapas menu. Chicken skewers, boom boom shrimp, kibbe, spanakopita. Since I wasn't hungry, I ate the spanakopita. It was good, I love spinach anything. Hubby said everything else was good too. No fireworks, but good. So, maybe it's not an experience that made me want to drag my friends and family down there to try, but I wouldn't be adverse to returning especially for Happy hour, which is 4-8 Monday thru Friday.

Lunchtime. 11:30. If you get there later - it's mobbed. Mediocre looking buffet. Opted for philly cheesesteak and fries. Got a water to wash it down. Setup is weird. You pay for your food at the counter and then someone comes over to ask you what you got to drink so they can bring it to you. The fries were without question the best fries I've had in Jax. The philly was sub par. The beef was too salty, and the bread seemed like it was not only stale, but was frozen at some point. Any drier and the bread would have turned to dust. Not enough cheese on the cheese steak. I eat downtown constantly, and this is a place where I would go for fries and a beer, but never again for a sandwich. My buddy's buffalo chicken wrap looked good and he said it tasted good too. Two stars for my food. Three for his. I'd skip this place and opt for a food truck.

Okay, full disclosure on this review - I am biased. I'm personal friends with the owners and have been a regular for years. Zodiac is a locally owned restaurant in downtown Jacksonville that has been serving up lunch for years. After their move to a new storefront on the same block, they opened a full bar and night business. I've tried so many things on the menu. They offer a daily buffet that features both hot and cold items. Take it to go if you're in a hurry or sit down and mingle with the downtown employees. My favorites for lunch: Lamb - sliced thin, seasoned well, and served with hummus and tabouli, Hummus - Super smooth, feel free to add olive oil from the bottles on the table. Fried fish sandwich - Perfect for an indulgent lunch. Fried crisp served on a toasted hoagie roll with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Spinach pie - Thin dough grilled up nice and crispy. Kibbeh - Football shaped cracked wheat and meat bites. Always hot and crisp. At night, they have a tapas menu. My picks: Cheese and olives - Black and green olives, feta and arabic cheese. Chicken Kabobs: Seasoned nicely and layered with peppers and onions. Fried Jibneh: Fried cheese with a spicy sauce. So good, order it. Spinach Rolls: Spinach and cheese dumplings fried up into crispy goodness. The bar has it all and usually some loca brews. At the last Artwalk they featured cocktails made with Arak, the Arabic anise liquor. I had the Cherry Arak Twister. It was really tasty. Zodiac is available for functions (my office has hosted a few there) and they'll do catering. I special ordered a platter of burger sliders for a bridal shower and it was a big hit with the bride. Zodiac is like Cheers for a large group of us. Everyone knows your name and treats you like family. Stop on by and come see us!

The Zodiac is a local gem. My favorite there is the Greek salad served with Mediterranean grilled chicken which is delicious as are all the tasty offerings on the menu. While the food is delicious, what puts the Zodiac into a class by itself is the ownership and staff. Jerry & Rima are fabulous hosts and you'll be made to feel at home. If you feel adventurous ask to try one of their selections of Ouzo or Mediterranean wine. I'm a fan of our local brews and you'll find several on tap.

What a nice place. We had a late lunch. Great salad dressing. All fresh. The owner was so nice.

I work at the courthouse, so this is about a 5 - 10 minute walk from there. I'd say that it's worth it if you have an hour lunch. The staff can be a little rude at some times, but other than that, the food is delicious and reasonably priced for a lunch special. The 10 for 20 dollar deal is also a nice plus!

Went during One Spark and sat at the bar. The ambiance was nice and the food was really good. Nice beer selection too. They have Dukes on tap. Looking forward to going back when they have a band on a weekend night.

The Zodiac Bar and Grill is located in downtown Jacksonville which makes it busy during the lunch and a ghost town at night, typical for the city. However, if you are looking for a nice quiet and rather private spot for dinner than Zodiac is the place for you. We were one of only two tables in the entire restaurant- and the other table was a group of three women obviously finishing up their happy hour festivities. We eventually had the entire place to ourselves for the entire rest of the meal. I don't even know why this place was even open past 6pm- the rest of Jacksonville is home in the 'burbs- NO ONE is downtown at night. Anyway, we ordered a few appetizers to piece together our dinner. We started with the Baba Ghanoush with pita bread. Though it was only $6, it was a very small portion. Hardly enough for two people to share. But it was good in the taste department. As good as any other Baba Ghnaoush I have had before. We also ordered the Spinach Pie. They were fried and offered very little in the way of spinach- it was primarily all fried dough. Next up we had the Spanakopita- spinach, feta, eggs and herbs baked in filo dough. This was far better than our previous items though not out of this world- but it was still pretty good and filling. Lastly, we had an order of the falafel- normally one of our favorite items in Greek cuisine. They were good, probably the best thing we ordered all night. Each of our items were $5-6 making the meal quite affordable. For us it was a good little meal though nothing special. It was so empty that it was almost eerie. We would maybe stick around our area of town across the river in the future when looking for a place for dinner. It is not Zodiac's fault downtown isn't hopping but unfortunately the food wouldn't be enough for us to probably venture back there again. 3 out of 5 sprouts.

Superb spot for lunch. The $10 lunch buffet is fresh and abundant. You'll leave full and happy. There are tons of fresh vegetarian options and several meat selections for hungry carnivores in addition to a few warm items. I particularly enjoy the fattoush salad, tabouli, orzo salad, hummus and stewed okra. The feta is super fresh and perfect atop the lemony tabouli. The grape leaves were the chilled variety (I prefer them warm). There's also a full lunch menu if buffet isn't your thing. Great for a group lunch or solo outing. Check out Zodiac for a fun lunch downtown.

Great lunch buffet with delicious salad, fresh made hummus, pita bread and a variety of other options. Good prices and fast, friendly service makes this one of my favorite lunch spots downtown.

Their food is alright, but the bar is pretty great especially on happy hour... It's a shame they don't try to team up with the Volstead across the street and stay open later / offer drinks and hookah. It would be great to bar hop between the two.

We wandered into Zodiac during One Spark because the hubby was wanting a "real" drink rather than a beer. Went to the bar and the bartender (she was super nice) made him a long island ice tea in a togo cup that was about 24 ounces. It was $10.75 which wasn't bad considering it was in such a huge cup and it was really, really strong. Definitely worth the price. While she was making his drink, we took a look at the menu and decided to have lunch here. There were tons of food trucks and we were going to pick one of those and eat, but the lines were horribly long and we were enjoying the air conditioning way too much. I was also starting to burn and needed out of the sun. Also, when we checked-in on Yelp, we saw a $20 for $10 deal which I purchased using my phone. Who could resist, right? We were seated and had a wonderful server, Julia. She was very attentive throughout the entire meal and we couldn't have asked for better service. She checked on us just the right amount of times and constantly kept our drinks filled. Even though I just ordered a burger, hubby wanted something different and there were several items on the menu we weren't familiar with. Julia did an excellent job at explaining those menu items to us. As I said, I ordered a burger well-done (I only eat hamburger meat well-done... steaks are a different story) with bacon and cheese. When it arrived, it was a nice, large burger with plenty of perfectly cooked bacon. The hamburger was cooked perfectly (well-done, not burt like a lot of places do it) and it was definitely fresh meat... none of that frozen stuff. The hamburger was good and quite filling. I couldn't even finish all of it, and I didn't even order any sides. The only complaint I have about the burger is the bun. It wasn't hard per say, it just wasn't really soft either. It was somewhere in between. I wish it had been softer. With that being said, I would still order the burger again in the future. Hubby had the gyro which he said was good. But I know he's going to write his own review, so I'll let him tell about the details. To be honest, I can't really tell you anything else about his meal because other than him telling me it was good, we didn't talk about it any further. We were just anxious to get back out and enjoy the happenings of One Spark. For dessert, we had the baklava. I really have nothing to compare it to because I have only tried baklava once in my life and that was ages ago. It was good, although not my favourite dessert I've ever had. I'm not so sure I would order it again. Not because it was bad, just because it really didn't seem like my kinda thing. Maybe I'm just not a baklava kind of person? The restaurant was clean and was appointed with very nice furnishings. Great bar area too if you're just looking to come in and have a drink or two. Three stars because I would definitely return again if I find myself downtown looking for a meal, but yet, not so great that I'm going to go out of my way to go downtown to return. I can, however, see myself popping in here with hubby for him to get a long island ice tea in a togo cup when we hit Art Walk. PS: Because of the Yelp Deal, we only paid $10 for my meal, hubby's meal, and two pieces of the baklava. We MORE than got our monies worth! PSS: Only ONE Yelp Deal can be used per table.

Some friends and I decided to check this place out last night... The food was pretty good, but the service was horrible!...our waitress was forgetful and never brought us anything we asked for...the only reason thru get 2 stars is because the food was decent...

Right off the bat, this is not a cheap restaurant nor memorable dining experience. For a Mediterranean restaurant, the menu was very limited in choices. And even then, several of the menu items were 'unavailable' like GYRO! The portion size was fairly small as is. So, we decided to try several items on the tapas menu. Baba ghanoush was quite similar to the quality purchased at the grocery store. It took them three reminders to bring the pita bread, even though we were the only customers. Otherwise, the spankopita was nearly all dough and no spinach. Greek salad portion was incredibly small and no frills of marinated peppers, kalamata olives, etc. Kabob was really dry with 3 pieces for $6. McDonald's quality french fries. We were so underwhelmed that we skipped desert. Left hungry, which is pretty rare for me. The restaurant was almost spooky in how empty and dark it was.

I am always down for Mediterranean food and when I found out that One Spark was hosting a volunteer social at Zodiac, I was stoked. The restaurant is gorgeous. It is a bit dim on the lighting, but I would totally love to come on a date here. Very intimate and just a great atmosphere. If you are so inclined, order a hookah to complete your experience. Upon opening the menu, I was dismayed at first to not see tabbouleh as it is key for me. Luckily, I asked the waitress if there was a chance that I could order tabbouleh and she said that she just needed to check with owner to make sure that was okay as Zodiac doesn't usually serve tabbouleh during their dinner service. There wasn't an issue as I was promptly served tabbouleh and pita. When my friend arrived, she ordered us some chicken kabobs to share. These were perfectly tender and cooked with a medley of peppers and onions. So juicy and tasty. Prices are a bit higher here than other places, but given the quality, it should be expected. As I am interning downtown now, I will have to make a point to stop in here for the lunch buffet.

Buffet is iffy but some of the other food is decent, however, the service is terrible. The "servers" ignore you until you frantically wave them down.

Not a full comment this time, bit I have to compliment this place not only on the the pride but the cleanliness. Sitting at the bar, my eyes always Rome to the lights. Yes, I know I like bright things, but really. There is not a speck of dust on the lights, the fan, the TV, or anything. I complimented the owner and he took so much pride saying "I eat here". I appreciate that they respect their customers as if it where themselves. I will always come back!

This place just misses the boat. Tried it twice and was not impressed. Second time went in at dinner time asked for a Menu and was given a single plastic sheet and could not make heads or tails out of it since the Swordfish was cheaper then Chicken. I told them I am used to fresh fish and was advised "don't". That said I ordered the chicken kabobs. WTF not even on a stick or evidence of a stick through the meat. green pepper was 3-4 tiny slivers about one bite - not chunks. the chicken was good and tomato also to but the Couscous complete with a sprinkle of canned peas was tasteless. Pissed me off when regulars came in and ordered hors d'oeuvres from the back side of the menu that I had no reason to look for but likely would have been happier getting --- Overpriced--

Terrible. Waiter was asshole. Over priced for bland food. Horribly slow and incompetent. Pita was only thing edible but, come on, even a monkey couldn't mess up pita or couscous.

Love it. For lunch its great, because it's quick, it's a buffet. Food as a good selection. A little salad and little entre and you're set. It's typicall full for lunch, but never had a problem finding a seat.

Holy cow, this place was good. I was here for lunch on a workday. I am a vegetarian, and while the buffet has some vegetarian offerings, I decided to go for a falafel sandwich instead. And man was I glad to do that. The falafel sandwich was easily the best greek/Mediterranean food I've ever had. It's a pita, a layer of hummus, falafel, and topped with tabouleh, and that's it. And it's perfect. Definitely give it a try.

  • Eryn S.

I'm giving 2 stars because the meat was pretty tender and good. That was the only thing any of us enjoyed about our meals. My review would be a complete 0 if it hadn't been for that. Everything minus the tabbouleh and the meat was bland and tasteless. I can't believe how bad the hummus was. It was like they pureed some garbanzo beans and dumped it on my plate minus even tahini!! The service was slow and the waitress screwed up the orders. The atmosphere was nice but that's about it. I won't be back.

Did the tapas gig with the Yelp deal...delicious! I may have to go back for their $10 lunch buffet and use a Groupon!?!

I work downtown in an office next door and always heard good things about this place. Today was my first visit and my gyro was kind of 'blah' to me. Tzatziki was bland, no feta cheese unless you pay extra, and fries didn't come out too fresh. Maybe I'm too spoiled from a Tallahassee restaurant that I'd always go to. I'll give them another try since I hear their buffet is good from friends, but Adams St. next door will make that tough.

Very fresh food, very clean restaurant. Place gets packed around lunchtime, but I am always satisfied with the quality of food here. During the week they have a lunchtime buffet ($8.75), but you have to purchase your drink (and optional baklava, which looked rather delicious) separately. The buffet includes Mediterranean food, such as pita and hummus and tabbuleh salad. They also have shepherd's pie, beef macaroni, and baked chicken. With my buffet, I ordered a cappuccino, which was very good. Service was good for the most part. There was one person who didn't smile, but they were still helpful. However, I have always left this restaurant with a happy and full tummy. Definitely check this place out.

2.5 stars - They've moved into a new location which is roomier, but I felt that the quality of the food on the buffet decreased a little....and maybe it's just me, but it seemed there were fewer dishes. Village Bread just passed Zodiac on my downtown lunch list
