By far my favorite sushi place in Jacksonville. When I lived in Jax I would bring my out of town friends there, family, whenever I celebrated something it'd be there, and when I moved away I said farewell to the city there. I really enjoy the spicy salmon roll, it's one of my favorites. If you got a party, don't be shy to order the Dragon Boat, it's got a great selection. This is definitely a place to try if you're in the Jax area. Good stuff, good stuff.

Left restaurant after being told about $2/person additional charge for all fish sushi dinner as I don't eat conch, octopus, etc... raw

If your looking for a chill sushi restaurant this is the spot. They have many selections and its relatively cheaper than most sushi places. The atmosphere is really quite and the tables are really close together, so larger parties might have a problem. The waitresses are really friendly and the food comes quick. Overall it was a pleasant experience and I would recommend it.

This was the best sushi I've had in a long time! GREAT PLACE! Stumbling upon the restaurant on our way down to King and Park for a late dinner, my boyfriend and I sat at the bar, so happy they were open late. Super friendly service, nice cooks, great ambiance. They were flexible enough to sub brown rice with the white rice in all our rolls for a tiny upcharge, which was more than fine with us, since we are trying to avoid white rice with our diets. Saki recommendation from the waiter was spot on. He was so nice! Food was great. Exactly what we were looking for. Will be there again.

Went here for lunch today. I didn't get a very clean feeling at the sushi bar. I'm not sure if the lunch portions are any different, which they shouldn't, but I didn't see much fish in my rolls. Avocado was close to rotten and what fish I did have, was warm. I chose this place based on the previous recommendations. I was very disappointed..and with all the other options within a few miles, I will not return.

Finding a good sushi restaurant in Jacksonville is a tough feat -- but I think I have found mine. Sumo Sushi makes me smile. Their spicy tuna hand roll is the perfect texture; I've tried numerous hand rolls at different restaurants from east to west coast and honestly -- Sumo's spicy tuna hand roll has my heart. I appreciate how small and intimate Sumo is. Though, their service is always just okay. The servers aren't rude, but they don't ever seem excited to see me like many other sushi restaurants. And quite frankly -- that's the only reason I haven't given Sumo Sushi a five star rating. I've sampled multiple items on their menu and loved almost all of them. My favorites are the Tako Su, Beef Tataki, Spicy Tuna Hand Roll, Octopus Nigiri, Shrimp Tempura Appetizer, and Fried Gyoza.
(4)Chawaratt G.
Great food with cozy atmosphere. Nice, friendly, fast service. The restaurant seems to be clean. Next time when I'm in this area and crave for sushi, I'll make sure to return here again.
(4)Charles S.
The best sushi in Jax, as well as some really good stuff from the kitchen. Come here if you appreciate the skill required to create visually appealing, delicious rolls. I can't speak highly enough about this place.
(5)Tattoos-By O.
Love this place! I try other places and always come back! It won't kill your wallet, the atmosphere is great and everyone is super friendly! Everything is fresh and they offer dishes that you can't find anywhere else in jville!
(5)Jen R.
I've eaten here a handful of times. The service is good, and I've always found the sushi to be fresh & tasty. The servers are always attentive and the food comes out in a reasonable amount of time. The sushi rolls are a bit smaller that some other comparably priced places in town, but still acceptable. The place itself is small in size. If you have a large group, you will probably want to look elsewhere. But the decor is pretty, and I love the cozy atmosphere! I wouldn't go as far as to call Sumo Sushi the best in Jax, and I wouldn't drive across town for it. But I do enjoy eating here when I'm nearby and looking for lunch or dinner.

When we first moved to Jacksonville, Sumo Sushi was the only place that came close to the sushi we were used to in Boston/Manhattan. The special rolls were wonderful, and the sweet potato rolls came with cream cheese, which is delicious. The servers all spoke English very well, which is certainly not mandatory, but helpful for take out orders. Last month, something changed. The rolls are just... Meh. The sweet potato roll is always undercooked and greasy. The crunchy mango shrimp roll (a previous favorite) got a strange new recipe which is not the same at all. The rolls are always sloppy and not wrapped tight enough. It's still better than many of the sushi places around, but it's disappointing when you know it could be better. In addition, there are all new wait staff who constantly mess up phone orders. The last 3 orders in a row have been wrong. Things are always missing or on the wrong plate. Also, they will cram 3 special rolls on one tray. It feels cheap and makes it harder to eat. Also when you ask them to correct their mistakes they act like you're the one who is at fault and are very rude.

Its been ok in the past but after getting a drink the waitress disappeared and we didn't get service. We put down a few dollars for drinks and then took off after waiting 30 mins. Other people came in after us and were served. I doubt I'll go back. Shame.. its right down the street.
(1)Virginia M.
I finally tried this place and it was delicious! I love their tuna sashimi. I will return!
(4)Joy Z.
Their sushi is as quirky as the restaurant name! I would go again and again just so I can taste and see all their rolls.
(4)Drew C.
I stumbled upon this place while on a business trip in Jacksonville. I sat at the bar and had the chance to watch the chefs prepare the sushi. The rolls are beautifully presented. I highly recommend the spicy tuna roll. You can't go wrong with any of their specialty rolls either. Prices are great. Located in a very nice part of town. Overall a great experience.
(5)Dustin K.
Great sushi/ service. The sashimi platter was well done and all the fish tasted very fresh. The fire roll was really great too, similar to a volcano roll and is served on fire!
(5)B Q.
The atmosphere was as expected for a sushi restaurant and the food was nothing special. I had the Philly and spicy tuna roll. I was a little disappointed as I had to request avocado in my Philly which is standard in all other sushi restaurants. Food was good, would I go back... Mmm maybe
(3)Kathy C.
It's always great to find a good sushi restaurant. My husband and I took my parents to Sumo one afternoon to give it a try. It was such a treat. We started with some hamachi sashimi appy. Then we ordered a couple of rolls to try. After complimenting the server on how good the rolls and the sashimi are, the server suggested we try a chef's special, live scallops prepared two-way. The presentation was wonderful (see picture) and it tasted awesome. Combine the food and the service, this is a 5 star joint for me. We will definitely be back for more soon!

So I almost cried when I saw this was another strip mall sushi joint (I tend to stay clear of them!)... LUCKILY... it was way better than I expected. So... after a long day at the Jacksonville Zoo with my boyfriend (who, if you've read any of my other reviews will know we go out for sushi all over every Saturday for the past year...) we ended up starving for our Saturday Sushi Dinner Date. Picked Sumo Sushi based on yelp reviews. Got there and was bummed bc it was in a strip mall. Then, I saw the sushi menu and almost died. It was all the normal sushi options... I was mid-tears when the server asked me if I was ready to order... After asking her what her favorite roll was (since I didn't know what basic rolls were any good) she handed me the specialty roll menu. I DIED FOR REAL! OMG! I started salivating as I read every roll. So besides being embarrassed and starving I now had to choose only a few rolls to share with my boyfriend and scarf down ASAP! Honey roll- SO GOOD Pink Lady- Never had ANYTHING like it before, and I'm totally craving it now... Sumo roll- TO DIE FOR Spicy Tuna- Great stuff! We had one other roll but I cant figure out which one it was... but OMG let me tell you it was damn tasty too! The only thing that's holding this place back from 5 star is the ambiance... its pretty casual but sometimes that all you need!

Sushi cafe is my go to place but my family and I decided to try a new place. We first ordered the tempura appetizer which was good. Then it all went downhill from there. The calamari appetizer was embarrassing, it was overcooked and looked like onion rings. I should have taken pictures. We placed several sushi roll orders, it was average at best. I ordered the lobster roll that ended up giving me the tempura shrimp roll. I'm not sure how they got it wrong since you fill out a sheet. The sashimi wasn't fresh tasting, not sure where they get their fish. The chicken fried rice was terrible, as soon they put it on the table, looked like it was frozen for several days then reheated, the rice was mushy like Risotto and no vegetables. It reminded me of the Chinese fried rice they sell in the freezer aisle at the grocery store. We complained about it, "she said, you ordered it, you pay" "no waste here". It was quite a dining experience. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars, was for the ambiance and the noodles they made special for my 4 year old.
(2)Donn D.
Not very crowded the few times we've been here, but surprised that it wasn't. The menu has a good balance of traditional and modern dishes. Good sake selection and my favorite Sapporo beer. Love the Chirashi.
(4)Eric S.
Good sushi... Good prices... Very clean No need to embellish... Just straight to the point.
(5)Caitlin R.
I live a short walk from Sumo Sushi and it's a favourite lunch spot for my boyfriend and me. They have great lunch specials (soup/salad and two rolls for $7.95, among others) and although it's a small restaurant, you feel very secluded at your table.
(4)Ayman K.
Not fresh at all. The sashimi tuna and salmon was warm and chewy. The service was slow. 15 minutes to bring clear soup. They tried to be creative with the special rolls, but all 4 rolls we tried were too heavy. Too much sauce and somewhat greasy. To top this all off, they didn't give us th 10% off advertised on their site for all orders over $20. The manager said you have to print the coupon, but there's no coupon on the site. Just a statement on the main page. Read it and you'll see what I am referring to. The four rolls we ordered are the four season, dynamite, California, and sumo roll. Also sashimi appetizer which is stale. We would not go there again. Save your money, the special rolls are $12 each and they are not good.
(1)Wendy m.
Great sushi at a great price. The special of the day which had lemon wedges on it was amazing. I have tried 5 sushi places in Jax so far and this one is my favorite. No frills, good quality sushi. The lunch special is a great value.
(4)Cheeze R.
Went on a Thursday night so it was not busy at all. Fast forward to 52 min after we placed our order our 4 sushi rolls arrive. Since there were only 3 other tables filled (2 of which were already eating) and since we didn't order any exotic sushi why did it take so long? BTW the sushi was barely average, we won't be back.
(1)Markus T.
Not good...The fish in both our rolls was ground up and tasted somewhat fake. Not fresh. Going to explore different options in the riverside area... Tempura ice cream was decent sweet tea tasted like straight concentrate...
(2)Christina E.
Some of the best sushi I have ever had! I recommend it to everyone I know.
(5)Samantha P.
This is one of my favorite places to eat Sushi! My son and I enjoyed great lunch today for only $25 not including the tip! We went in at noon and I took advantage of the lunch special (choose 2 rolls of sushi with salad or soup included). My son had the shrimp fried rice and it was delish. I highly recommend Sumo Sushi. Friendly staff, fresh and delicious sushi. Their sweet tea is great. I like their variety of Saki as well :)
(5)Hilary L.
We tried Sumo on a quiet Tuesday night and I've got to say, it was a great experience. They've done a nice job with the decor and made excellent use of those hanging bamboo mats to kind of separate the restaurant into intimate little sections. They also chose to block the windows with bamboo walls, which works. Stepping into Sumo is like stepping into somewhere else. The food, by the way, is also awesome. Highlights for me were the Sweet Potato Roll [no joke, its incredible] and the Kamikaze Roll. Both were fresh and delicious. On top of the taste, the presentation was unbelievable. I mean really, I don't think I've ever seen such artistically presented sushi, certainly not in anywhere with such reasonable prices. As a side note, they have a full menu of hibachi, teriyaki, katsu, etc for those that don't like sushi. And actually Sumo would be perfect for someone who's afraid to try sushi as they have a lot of rolls with cooked fish in them as well. I hesitate to say for sure that this is the best in Jax, but I will say that this restaurant is absolute must-try. Do not miss this place.
(4)Mike W.
I've dined here a few times with my ex-boyfriend who lived in Jacksonville and I have only good to say about this establishment. The sushi is very fresh and tasty and the service is also quite good. In fact, the sushi chef recognized us on our second visit from when we'd had lunch here a couple weeks before and sent over a free nigiri to try. He, and the rest of the staff, seemed truly happy we'd picked their restaurant for dinner. The sushi is in the same price range as a lot of other Jax places, which is to say not too expensive but not really cheap either. For fresh, quality, sushi, you get what you pay for, and that's just how it rolls. The quality I feel is higher overall than nearby Sake House. Sumo is a fairly new establishment and seems sincere in trying to offer the best experience possible to their customers. The Lobster Roll, Summer Roll (no relation really to Viet summer rolls), and the lunch specials are all stellar dishes here: any fresh sushi that is not very dressed-up and allows the flavor of the fish to come through is also a good bet due to the emphasis here on fresh fish. The tuna and yellowtail rolls I had were some of the best I've had in quite some time.
(5)Lindsey B.
Great sushi at a good price. Huge hibachi lunch specials. Go at least once a month
(4)Esther M.
Interesting rolls and a good selection of sakes, but when a sushi chef sends out uni (urchin) that is well past fresh, it calls into question what else is sent out under the cover of sauces. There are better places 9Sake House, Sushi Bistro, Fusion in St Aug).

Me and my wife had dinner at this restaurant not really having extremely high expectations. There is no place that has the best sushi than Boston, San Fran. or Seattle. The restaurant is nested in what looked like an office building so we almost missed it. There is no outdoor seating per say. The interior decor is comfy and may be a little dark but let that not mislead you in thinking they are trying to hide anything in the food. We first ordered the seaweed salad which didn't seem worth the $4.50. A small mound in a very large plate, with nothing outstanding to write about. The second appetizer was the avocado salad that was almost double the price, actually was very presentable and unique. It had copped tuna/salmon with tobiko, sliced cucumbers, and slightly sweet mayo layed next to slices of avocado. I honestly thought they would have avocado inside the salad. To be able to judge the quality of sushi, we typically order the sashimi dinner. This had 16 pieces and was $20. The presentation again was incredible and had a nice touch of a flower made of salmon (sake) in a mini steamer. We also ordered a super rainbow roll for $13 and godzilla roll for $12. Again the presentation was incredible and very creative. They both had panko flakes with spicy tuna or salmon. The godzilla was topped with eel while the rainbow roll was topped with 5 different types of fish. I know for some people, the quantity is not as large and a bit on the pricey side but the quality and presentation far exceeds expectation. The fish had great color, was very fresh and had no fishy taste. They may just as well have a pond in back with live fish. That night we had Chef Danny and Chef Ekger(?) create our lovely dishes. Two very talented chefs that are worthy of Eat-Japan top chefs. Our experience has changed our mind about "eating sushi in Jacksonville?" mentality.

My wife and I used to get take out here often and have eaten in occasionally. Overall, the sushi ranges from good to OK. I don't believe we have ever had a terrible food experience here. However, we finally got tired of being nickel and dimed. They charge $1 to put rice on the outside of rolls and charge $0.25 for more than two take-out sauces even if you just spent more than $40 on your sushi order. Never mind that most of the time we didn't ask for ANY sauce, much less ONE extra. Another quirk that I haven't encountered at any other restaurant is that they also won't allow you to order two of the same rolls off the lunch specials. Those additional charges/policies may not be a big deal in and of themselves, but they began to wear on us after eating there so often. There are plenty of other nearby sushi restaurants we go to that do all the things I mentioned above with no complaints and seem to appreciate our business. Unfortunately, while most of the sushi has been good, our weekly visits to Sumo Sushi have ended.
(2)Lindsay L.
Sumo Sushi is one of those places I've driven by many a time but never found the right night to go in. I finally had the chance to go in this past Monday. I was so happy when we walked in; the decor is really great. There are screens hanging between the tables, so it feels as if you are in a private dining room instead of stuffing raw fish down your face with fifty of your closest friends. That being said, the menu was somewhat of a let-down. It seemed like almost every roll was fried or mentioned tempura. They did have a raw menu, but I was looking for some cooked rolls that weren't fried. Not much luck outside your basic California roll. The service was slow and the food took a long time to come out. Normally, I'd understand if the place was busy, but there were two other tables dining beside us. I could tell our server was frustrated, and I know the rolls were being made by hand, but...really? I will go back and maybe take a more extensive look at the menu in hopes of finding something not crunchy. If you haven't been to Sumo and you live in the area, you should at least give it a whirl.
(3)Shannon A.
I could eat here every day, and there are some weeks that I have done just that. Great sushi and their beef teryaki is also delicious.
(5)Jen S.
The sweet potato roll was by far the best item ordered tonight and I would give that 5 stars alone, but the chicken hibachi was oversaturated with soy sauce and the fried rice was somewhat flavorless. The miso soup was meh and the salad wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. Overall it was okay and I might return for sushi alone, but I have definitely had better in Jacksonville.
(2)Callan C.
Sumo sushi is a fun little spot. The food is great, I enjoyed the seaweed salad and a couple of rolls. I tried the sweet potato roll for kicks. It was good, but only worth a few pieces (split it with someone). They had nice presentation, putting my sushi on some kind of banana leaf or something. I also appreciated the service, it was very attentive. The decor is casual, this isn't an uppity place. They have bamboo screens everywhere which give a sense of privacy. I enjoyed the eclectic music they had the night I was there. Prices are good, most of the rolls are about $4-8.
(4)Michael W.
For the price is was great.
(4)Natalie W.
5 Words -- BEST SPICY TUNA ROLL EVER !! and this is coming from a girl who has paid a LOT of money for sushi !!! We only had rolls which I know aren't totally traditional sushi but .... whatever !! and on top of that ... it's is a downright bargain !! Two beers, edamame, two miso soup, two salads, and 4 rolls = $41 !! The sweet potato roll others rave about is good but .... it is a little strange -- just cuz it's unexpected !! and you can only eat a couple pieces because it's so filling We had two other rolls - crazy and fuji mountain (I think) and we liked the crazy but the other one was our least favorite. If we go back - I will literally just order like 3 spicy tuna rolls -- they were perfectly balanced with tuna and crunchies -- in my opinion -- spicy tuna roll heaven !! and at these prices ($4.55 for the spicy tuna) if I lived closer -- I'd go every day !!
(4)Sylvia B.
Fresh fish and good presentation, the main things I am looking for when I go for sushi. Ton's of roll choices.
(5)Mel N.
I tell myself that I shouldn't review sushi joints in Jax just because I've lived in Japan and had awesome sushi but I just couldn't help myself. This place is ok. We went here for Dinner and I ordered sushi (not rolls- which is NOT sushi btw). I ordered some salmon, tuna, squid, octopus, and yellow tale. What I didn't really care for was the fact that the chefs put some sort of sauce under and ontop of the fish. My guess was so it didn't taste so fishy.. but then why have soy sauce on the tables? Anyways, fish is gonna taste fishy lol so why hide it? I don't know I really thought it was weird. The rice was a lil bit dry. Um so.. yeah that's it.
(3)Matt S.
Sumo had some of the best sushi in Jax, I'm my opinion. Great sushi + reasonable price + close to my office = frequent visits...
(5)Christian H.
Sumo Sushi is super incredible. The sushi is fresh and elegantly crafted by masters, and the plated items are always a step above. While I've never left hungry, the food is of a much higher quality compared to usual Japanese restaurants which overload customers with average food.
(5)Joseph F.
So when you think of Jacksonville, FL, you don't think of Sushi. That being said, this was not a bad place. Many Reviews mention the Potato Roll and it was pretty good. Prices are not bad and I would recommend this to locals, I live in San Diego, and maybe not to visitors as it is tucked away in a quant neighborhood of Brooklyn. But, hey, if you like to explore, go for it.
(4)Andy L.
I got a large order to go and it was really good. I've been pretty disappointed with sushi in Jacksonville, but Sumo Sushi has given me hope. The restaurant is small and the dished going to the tables looked really appetizing. I'll definitely go back.
(3)R. G.
First off, don't expect to get great sushi in Jacksonville because it isn't going to happen...at any restaurant. With that said, this place is the best I've had in Jax so I'm willing to give them 4 stars. The Good: -They are very amenable to making substitutions in rolls (for instance, if you don't want anything tempura friend in your roll) -Their prices are very reasonable and they have many rolls under $6 or $7 dollars -I like their miso soup -Cute, casual ambiance. They have rice paper hanging between tables which allows for some privacy while dining. Would be a good place for a casual date night or to go out with friends. -They are open late...that's a plus for me. The Bad: --They don't have many all raw sushi rolls, but they make up for this by being good about doing substitutions. Still, it would be nice not to be that pain in the ass customer that always asks for something different, so more raw options would be a welcomed addition to the menu here. If you live anywhere near the Riverside neighborhood or are in town staying at a hotel downtown, this place is definitely worth a try if you are in the mood for sushi.
(4)Jennifer P.
I love Love LOVE their Jaguar Roll! So delicious.
(5)Patia W.
I'm very picky when it comes to sushi places, but this place honestly has the best. I'd highly recommend trying the sweet potato roll. You will NOT be disappointed. The staff is really nice and sweet. I went during lunch hours with a friend and the chef let us try some new meal he was making!
(5)Bill K.
OK it's been 5 months since my last visit . Went back with my wife for dinner and it was like night and day. Much, much better service, I think it was a language barrier thing the first time I went there with the waitress. Anyway I liked it my wife loved it we will be back again.
(5)Victor C.
Are you kidding me Jacksonville? Ugh! I guess you need sushi places like this to make good sushi look all that better. If you are in to everything being tempura and your fish a little rubbery this is the joint for you. I suppose I am spoiled living in on the west coast were sushi is a passion and done right. Please go to Hooters at least the deep fryer there is setup for the correct type of food. I get better sushi at the grocery store.
(2)None T.
Freshest Sushi. I'm happy to have found a sushi spot. A little pricey but worth it.
(5)John A.
Marginal at best. Rolls were small and pink lady was interesting but was boring after the first bite.
(2)Monique M.
I was surprised to find the best sushi I've had in Jacksonville here. The artistry of each plate is proudly featured. The creativity of the rolls was also appreciated. Every roll/sashimi was fresh. I felt the portions were larger than many other places'. The dining room is very clean and stylish and the service friendly. The sparkling sake is a must-try.
(5)Samantha S.
First off, I love the atmosphere. The waiters and waitresses are amazing. Even when I brought in my picky 3 year old nephew, they were super sweet to him. I only ever go for sushi, but I have yet to be disappointed. The less than 4 dollar sweet potato roll is the best in Jacksonville. Plus, you can tell the sushi chef is very proud of his art work. Any of the special rolls come out on their own plate with decor and flowers. On top of that, they're huge portions and very delicious--Not too much rice and plenty of fish. I've yet to have a bad experience here.
(5)Jerry B.
It's okay. The Food not amazing but no real complaints with it. I see a lot of pictures others have posted of amazing plating. My food seemed bland. The staff and service seemed unethusiastic, but kept up on the service. I do not think would actually go back, but it was not bad Enough to not go back. It may have just been an off time to go.
(3)Anna M.
I recently moved to Jacksonville and I was pleasantly surprised with this small restaurant in my new neighborhood. We were seated immediately and a small basket of fresh edamame was delivered to our table while we looked over the menu. We selected a few rolls and appetizers to try a variety of options. The dumplings and edamame were delicious and pleasantly savory. The tempura chicken appetizer was somewhat greasy, but had good flavor. We tried the following rolls: Alaska Rainbow Spicy Tuna Honey Fuji Mountain The spicy tuna was very good but nothing extraordinary. The rainbow, Alaska and Fuji Mountain rolls were also very good rolls and are worth coming back for. The only roll I was unimpressed with was the Honey roll. The roll itself had quality ingredients but was too sweet for my tastes. The service was very speedy and our server checked in with us frequently. When our meal was over we were brought a pair of chopsticks because we purchased more than $50 worth of food. This place is worth a second visit and I look forward to trying some new items next time I visit!
(4)Pamela D.
What a great variety of sushi, sashimi and sáke here! I'm very happy I finally had the chance to check this'd place out. I love sushi but don't have it often, and everytime I do have it I say the same thing: I gotta eat more sushi! Haha Tonight trying their Cali, dragon and pink rose rolls. The red menu is where it's at if you are in the mood for something totally different and delicious. There are so many to try, I'm going to have to drag my beach friends here so we can crack down on this list haha. Very clean place with efficient service. The ladies are sweet and fun. I love hearing them speak and watching the sushi master work. Great environment; the lighting, googly-eyed fish and beautiful pictures on the wall make for a place perfect to just enjoy the good things in life. Can't wait to come again!
(5)Laura B.
Another delicious experience at Sumo Sushi. Tried 3 new rolls (which we never do as I am a creature of habit). This time: R40' 2 & 15. All very yummy. Be warned, 15 is a little sloppy. I will say, this time around the staff was much friendlier and attentive.
(5)Michelle M.
What I like best about Sumo is the creative sushi on the red menu. They have combinations here that I haven't seen in other sushi places and I've liked every single one I've tried. We've gone here for years. The downside, it used to be cleaner. I don't like sticky tables.
(4)Samantha R.
I have been frequenting Sumo Sushi since 2011 and I can honestly say it is the best sushi in Jax! Their salmon absolutely melts in your mouth. I typically like very simple sushi, however the sweet potato roll is a MUST TRY. It is like a desert. A very nice family run restaurant. Usually busy during dinner, but much quieter for lunch! Good lunch specials too.
(5)Chelsea G.
Best Sushi in Jax! Treat yourself to the red "special rolls" menu! You will not be disappointed! We have ordered nearly every roll on that menu and they have all been superb. The staff knows my regular customized roll order by memory and I have never had to complain about ANYTHING. They have always been very helpful and polite. We've been going to Sumo for almost 3 years now. As for the actual restaurant, this place has more of a "mom and pops" feel, but it's not too small. There is a sushi bar, booths, and tables. Don't come here expecting huge hibachi grills/tables. I don't miss them, but then again I come here just for their sushi. The presentation of their sushi is creative to say the least. You can really tell they love what they do. I've never ate from a boring looking plate. In fact, one roll is delivered to the table ON FIRE! Very cool and very yummy!
(5)Derek H.
After Koja at The Landing closed, we were distraught until we discovered this Riverside gem. It isn't part of the latest round of Park & King cool/hip/now development and is instead a place that feels better established if not downright homey; it has since become our go to. While we have had service suffer a little as our wait times increased when the restaurant was full and I have waited what I felt was unacceptably long for our check in only a couple extreme instances, I was able to resolve those waits by simply approaching the take-out register myself. The sushi chefs definitely know what they're doing and practice their art with care and precision. The quality of the sushi itself is very good and the pricing makes for an affordable night out. For an extra treat, order from the red chef's menu.

Sadly disappointed. This used to be the best sushi place in town but it isn't anymore. The chicken teriyaki was over cooked and dry. The ginger salad had all the worst pieces of lettuce... Crazy but true. My sushi rolls were ok but the sauces have changed, They are a little weaker and less tasty. Today, the credit card machine is down and when I asked to use my free appetizer app I was told I may only pick 2 of the selections. Hmmmm. That was not made clear. Nice staff.

This place is a solid 4 STARS. The food is very good here and the service was above average. I ordered all rolls and the portions were very nice and filling. They came out pretty quickly with beautiful presentation. My bf went with the beef udon which was loaded with tender pieces of meat and tons of fresh veggies. The broth was simple yet so flavorful. They have a few menus available with a nice variety for everyone. Overall, this is a great place to get your Asian flavors on without breaking the bank. Try it out!

We walked in at 3 because the Italian place was closed. The first impression were not great but that changed as we meet our waitress and looked at the menu. Music was an oriental hip hop. Strange at first but it worked. Sushi and sashimi was very nice and the presentation was good. I would rather have edible or at least real adornments to my plate. The plastic aquarium plant was strange looking. The salad is ok but miso was lacking tofu. Overall an OK first visit but I will definitely try it again.

I use to think Kazu was the best sushi in town, especially since sushi in Jacksonville is so bad. But this place! This place is hands down the best sushi in Jacksonville. It's in such great area and well worth the 30min drive! The quality of the food is amazing and the price isn't too bad. The mango sauce is AMAZING, all of it was. The gyoza was soooo good too! The only reason why I personally didn't give it 5 stars is because: 1. Not a kids friendly restaurant. (I usually have my toddlers distraction kit, but was forgetful last night) 2. The chicken katsu was a little over cooked. 3. The bento box should of came with udon or soba/any japanese noodles instead of lo mein noodles. I have (said) two small children and it's nice to go to a restaurant once in a while, although I had a few "cons" it wont stop us from coming here. This place will definitely be one of the places we frequent (as much as we can)!

The sushi here is always fresh and pretty good. The prices are great, as well. The music is making me sleepy, but overall I definitely recommend this restaurant.

I have been to many sushi restaurants in the area and Sumo tops them all. Unless you left your pallate at home, you will be impressed! I don't have recommendations for Sumo, because anything you order, will be Awesome with a capital A!

I can't believe i haven't written a review for this place yet, considering I've eaten here more times than I can count. I'm totally slacking. Located on Park Street in Riverside, it's a convenient stop for a bite to eat while I'm out and about grazing through the awesome antique stores in the area. The Scene: It's cozy, yet not cramped, so that wherever you're sitting you have a pretty good view of the sushi bar and you can observe the chef working his ninja skills. Me? If I tried to be a sushi chef, I'd have no fingers because yes...I'm that clumsy. So I've always carried a profound respect for their craft and the artistry involved. Looking around, my first impression was that the setting was soft and intimate, thus a pretty good choice for a date night, or if you're in the mafia...a "sit-down." The Grinds: OK, so I'm allergic to seafood (YES, i'm from Hawaii and allergic to seafood...what a waste, huh? Lol), so obviously my sushi choices are limited when I dine at these establishments. For those of you who are lucky enough to indulge in such...I recommend you step away from the norm and check out the Red Menu. If it's not on the table, ask for it. What lies inside is a vast, innovative array of sushi variety that I've yet to see anywhere else. This tells me they know their stuff, and aren't scared to step beyond the "Dragon Roll" hype. Since I can't have seafood, I go for the Sweet Potato Roll, which never fails to provide that perfect soft to crunchy consistency that I look for. What I love is that they'll substitute chicken in the Shrimp Tempura Roll for me without batting an eye, and with flawless execution at that. I can eat these everyday, especially coated in the scrumptious shrimp sauce. The Service: You'd think I'd know her name by now, considering I come here for lunch around the same time each visit, and she's always here. Maybe one of these years, I'll remember to ask. But she's consistently on top of things, is quick on the cup refills, and has handled my anti-seafood requests like a pro. Big thumbs up to her! The Wrap-Up: YES, eat here! As pricing goes, yes they may be a tad steeper, but it's worth it, trust me. Don't forget about that Red Menu as well, especially if you're in the market to be adventurous. I plan on trying one of their Udon Noodle dishes in the near future, as they sound very tempting as well! Till next time, Yeeps, as always SUPPORT your local eats and SYOY!

This is our favorite sushi place in Jax. Service is good, selection is excellent, and the food is fantastic. We can't not order the Sashimi Deluxe, but love the Sumo roll too.

We went back to Sumo yet again the other night and tried a couple of new rolls. The Magic Fire Roll (actually comes out on fire... scared me at first... lol...) was AMAZING as was our old standby The Manhattan and another new roll, The Lemon Fish, which we ended our meal with.... it was refreshing and satisfying with a nice kick of lemon. If you want a darn near perfect sushi meal, start with the Manhattan... then have the Magic Fire and end with the Lemon Fish. ;-) You will be very satisfied! Wonderful wait staff and delightful atmosphere will not disappoint.

EXTREMELY disappointed and angry at my treatment at this restaurant last night. This is our go-to sushi joint. Or WAS. Last night, anniversary dinner.... We ordered a soft shell crab app and shumai app, 4 sushi rolls, and seafood yaki udon. The crab app did not taste 'right' on the first pice, but I thought it may be the sauce so I tried again with no sauce. Yep, still tasted 'bad'. I sent it back and instructed them to take it off. Did not want another because if one crab is bad the whole batch could be. The rest of our food was good, as usual. However, they then refused to remove the app from my bill. Tried to give me % off, while simultaneously tying to overcharge me on the other app (maybe thinking I wouldn't notice?) Numerous times I told them "I am not paying for potentially spoiled food." They said "it isn't our fault you didn't like it" which is laughable because I LOVE soft shell crab and order either the app or the roll EVERY TIME I AM IN THIS PLACE. They eventually threatened to call the cops if I didn't pay for the appetizer, to which I told them "go ahead. I'll wait". FINALLY they took off the app and I paid my bill and left, never to return and intending to drop the whole matter. EXCEPT....I've been up all night sick. I suspect food poisoning. And now I am ENRAGED. I've called the restaurant, the manager isn't there (wasn't there last night, they were calling him/her on the phone and making me wait). How DARE you serve spoiled food and try to strong arm a customer, who TELLS you it is spolied, into paying for it?!?!? My bill was $57+ AFTER the app was removed. I'm not trying to run out on a bill, and I happily paid for the rest of my food AND left a reasonable tip (not the fault of the wait staff). I am a customer service professional (of course I am off work sick today) and this treatment is ridiculous. Not only was I threatened but now I am loosing pay thanks to this restaurant's negligence. When I finish this review I'll be contacting a lawyer to discuss damages AND the health department.

Exquisite sushi, lovely environment, reasonable prices! The sweet potato roll is different but in a delightful way. I was stationed in JAX for 2 years and this was the best sushi out of many places I tried.
(5)Andrea W.
Love the sushi here! 4 stars because I just can't stand the music though. But food is always great. Appetizers are always fresh. Definitely recommend. :)

This is my fiancé's and I go to sushi spot. It's the best sushi we've had in JAX! It's not fancy, I consider it casual dining. We normally go during lunch which doesn't seem to be too busy. You're literally in and out. Dinner, on the other hand, is packed and usually have to wait to be seated. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. We always order the specialty rolls from the red menu. These rolls are a little more expensive but it's worth the extra dollar or two. Our go to rolls are Fire Dragon Roll, House Special Roll and Caterpillar Roll, to name a few. We also like the Manhattan Roll from the basic menu. Overall this place is great, you won't be disappointed!

I, too, have been to Sumo Sushi about 5-6 times over the past year and a half or so and I am actually glad I waited to write this review. I had heard a lot of hype about the place, but our first visit was, eh, so-so, with slower service and rolls that were good, but a bit on the smaller side for the price, but nothing to write home about. I was at a party and talking to a mutual friend about our experience here... and she told me... "That's because you have to ask for the red menu." Now, I am not 100% sure this isn't given out most of the time, but Sat. we were given the normal menu and then asked for the red. It is filled with all of the chef's special rolls that you don't want to miss out on! So the past 2 visits have been really, really good. Presentation is excellent and well executed and gorgeous.. (Man, I need to post these pics soon... I'll get there.) Not the best sushi in the entire world, but consistent, fresh and our service has always been on point. So, in two visits we have tried the Butterfly, Sumo, Caterpillar, Black Dragon, Fire Dragon and Lemon Fish rolls and they have all been fantastic. The Lemon Fish roll was spicy red snapper, cucumber, crab meat, tuna, salmon, yellow tail and lemon on top.... it had little crunchies in the middle and when dipped in the soy sauce, it was a wonderful mix of lemon, salt and crunch and reminded me a bit of fish and chips. Amazing! Perfect for a warm summer day and excellent with a Sapporo. Side note, we just got a new puppy so walked her up to Sumo and sat outside with her. They brought her a little bowl of water since it was a hot day and that was appreciated!

This place was the first place I ever have sushi a real shot and I only regret this because of how much I ended up enjoying this place. I moved away nearly a year ago and still regularly say "still not as good as Sumo" when I try sushi at other places. Extremely reasonable prices and extraordinary flavor.

Enjoyed this establishment. They have little privacy curtains which is kinda cute. We ordered the love boat. Comes w soups and salad as well. The ginger dressing was nice, good mixture of sweet, sour and tangy. The miso soup I assume he liked as he slurped it down it two seconds. The clear soup had good flavors w onions and mushrooms. The love boat had a great variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls etc. def will come back. I'm finding riverside/westside to have the best food choices in jax

Just stopped off for some sushi and was pleasantly surprised how great this place was. We were the only ones in there to start, so we were a little nervous, but when we left, the joint was packed. The sushi was fresh and they were willing to make items for us they had not made before. Great spot in Jax!

I think my honey found this place on Yelp... I am glad he did! When we walked in, there was a sticker on the door that said 'we are a Yelp favorite'! I giggled and thought... we'll see! The restaurant was pretty empty. Besides us, there was one other couple. Very clean place and the service was quick and very friendly. They have dividers hanging from the ceiling between tables. I wasn't sure how I felt about that, seemed almost distracting. After a few minutes, it grew on me and I loved the sense of privacy. Before you order, be sure to check out the infamous 'red' menu. I've heard others say that they had to ask for this little 'secret', but when we were here it was sitting on the corner of every table. This menu has all of the special rolls... and there are a lot, which means we are going to have to make many more visits! We ordered the clear soup... it's a must! Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy :) We also ordered three rolls (from the red menu). The pink lady (or something like that), was soooo cute I almost didn't wanna eat it... almost! It was just as yummi as it was pretty. The spicy tuna wasn't really spicy at all, but it was still very good. and the third one... dang, the name escapes me at the moment. It happened to be my favorite, go figure! I'm horrible with names! All in all, this is a great little hole in the wall sushi place with exceptional customer service! Give em a try, you won't be disappointed!

It's been a while since I wrote my first review for Sumo Sushi, but after going back a handful of times and actually having visited again last night, I can easily say that it's both my favorite sushi and Japanese place in town. As I previously mentioned, the sushi is great. Each visit, I order my usuals (simple cucumber and tuna rolls, maybe a california roll) as well as one or two of the more complex rolls. I personally don't care much for ostentatious rolls with tons of ingredients that make individual flavors difficult to differentiate, but Sumo Sushi manages to make a fair amount of rolls that don't cross this invisible line. The Rainbow Roll and Dragon Roll are both lovely without being over the top, and just yesterday I tried a roll that I can't remember the name of that had salmon katsu, cream cheese, and cucumber that was quite delicious. Since my first visit, I've also tried the katsu (panko-breaded fried pork, or other meats) and the unagidon much to my pleasure. The unagidon, in particular is a real treasure; it's something you can't find easily, a layer of grilled eel that you might find in an eel roll over a bed of steamed rice. If you're as wild about eel and its accompanying sweet soy-based sauce, unagidon is something you should try. The final thing I'd like to note is that Sumo Sushi makes it easy to be a customer by having a welcoming environment. Tasteful Japanese art on the walls, screens that separate booths from other seating, and mild, ornamental overhead lamps complete a picture of a sushi restaurant with Japanese heritage that isn't overly "trendy" or overly traditional. It's nice to go to a restaurant that is not only budget-friendly and delicious, but also welcoming in its decoration and staff.

Went to an event at the Prime Osborn with a good friend. A good friend who I also go for sushi with on a regular basis. When I found this place on the app, I was excited to try it. Like Lindsay L., this is a place I have driven by several times, but considering I do not live in Riverside, I had no real reason to ever drive that far for sushi. I ordered my standard spicy tuna with avocado and I tried something new (to me): the Manhattan roll. We split the calamari special (tempura fried) as an appetizer. The spice on the tuna was just right. The rolls were rolled nice and tight which made them very easy to pick up with chopsticks. The waitstaff was pleasant & timely; they never let our drinks empty without checking on us. When I first entered, the hanging dividers threw me a little, but once I was sitting, I appreciated the privacy they did provide. Sumo Sushi is one of my new favorite places in Jacksonville. I cannot wait to take my husband back to try it. While I do not see myself venturing over to Sumo for dinner very often, I will definitely keep it in mind when we're on that side of town.

Its a nice local place. I tend to think Sushi Cafe is a little better, a wee bit fresher, the rice a little more al dente. But Sumo Sushi is pleasant enough.

So my girlfriend and me had to spend Valentine's Day in Jacksonville, and there was no question about it, we had to do sushi Sushi in Pensacola means going to Ichiban for us, so I had to find a place that sounded almost as good. I looked on Yelp, I read reviews, and there I was. It was packed, so we got a spot on the waiting list. The waiting list was very unofficial it seemed, because a few other people got seated before the couple that was behind us in line, but natural selection lead us to get seated promptly. However, I think I saw a total of five employees there in front of house, which was just not enough for that night: two sushi chefs, one bus boy, and two kind of servers. After a while, we got our oddly flavored sweet tea. It might have just been the Jacksonville water that we were not used to. We ordered the Fried Calamari and a couple of bowls of Miso Soup first. When we got the calamari, we initially thought that it was crazily overpriced, because of the scant quantity on the plate, but then we started eating it, and it was honestly some of the best calamari I have ever eaten. The soup was soup. Nothing special. For our main course, we ordered three rolls of sushi: the Park Roll, the Double Crunchy Spicy Roll, and the Black Dragon Roll. The Double Crunchy Spicy Roll was a 6.5/10; it was like a crab cake sushi roll with a crunchy element inside. So good. The Park Roll was an 8/10; tempura inside of a roll that itself was fried tempura style. It was the best piece of fried sushi I have ever had. The Black Dragon Roll was a solid 10/10. It was the best roll I've ever had, and I will head back to Jacksonville as soon as I can for another one. Dessert was a fried piece of cheesecake. The cheesecake was tempura fried, but inside the cheesecake was almost completely frozen solid. I don't wanna talk about it. Overall, the not-so-great service was balanced out by the awesome food and the great price points.

Very good experience and very good food. They do make sure you understand that what you are eating is raw, uncooked seafood, but I appreciated them pointing that out. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time and the service was very attentive. We would definitely go back.

Found this on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We were craving Sushi and this place popped up as nearby. When we arrived we noticed a Yelp sticker on the door and thought that this place is gonna be great! We walked in and was greeted by a very polite young girl and seated right away. There was hardly anyone in the place but it was an early Sunday afternoon. The place had a neat little feel to it. Dividers hanging from the ceiling provided some romantic little privacy too the tables. We were seated near the fish tank where this big ole fish was taunting me! We ordered 3 rolls. A Pink Lady, Spicy Tuna and something with advacado and jalepeno. Sorry, cant remember the name. They came out pretty quickly as i finished my first Asahi beer (love those things)! The presentation was awesome! I loved the way they took pride in the way their product looked. The Pink Lady was shaped in a neat little flower shape. Ok, now the taste... Well, it wasnt bad, at all, but it wasnt stupendous. It was actually pretty average. The spicy tuna was excellent but i cant honestly say it was the best ive had. Dont get me wrong, this will be one of our favorites to go because like ive said before, i like the "whole" experience of a place. And this place made up for the "average food" by the "total experience".

One if my favorite sushi restaurants in Jax. Close to my house, family owned, quiet, simple, good and inexpensive. I have yet to have something from their menu I didn't like.
(5)Charles C.
I gotta say that finding quality, decently priced sushi (or fresh fish for that matter) in any state not starting with the letters CA can be tough. With a large selection at prices that won't make you secretly cry in the bathroom, this joint comes close to ending that search in Jacksonville. It's nothing fancy. There are no bells or whistles to Sumo. Just good food at a price that won't intimidate. Also sake. Yeaaaah sake.
(4)Jacky K C.
tip: not authentic Japanese joint since the staff all speak Chinese (at one point, we wanted to test them by speaking Chinese with them, they responded with English which kinda maintains their professionalism). Came in on a half full capacity Wednesday night which is not bad. Ordered the dragon boat ($59) was not an actual boat but a bridge, took very long to make, sushi was good but had way better in California (salmon sashimi not that fresh). background music were Chinese songs in a sushi joint, service was not very attentive, took them forever for salad and soup, waited to a point where we had to ask to get it which is uncalled for considering it is included in the meal. tea is extra.
