I grew up in New Jersey so I've had very authentic Italian food all over the northeast. Sorrento's is the best Italian restaurant I've found in Jax. Never had a bad meal here and everything is delicious. They also give you a basket of dinner rolls which is a huge plus for me. The restaurant is very small and quaint but I've never had to wait long for a table. You will not be disappointed here.

We try to eat here once a month. Always a good experience and great italian food at a reasonable price. Garlic knots!! The lasagna and chicken positano supreme are my favorites. Everything is really good. One of my favorite places in Jacksonville.

Best italian food in Jacksonville bar none. We have moved to Texas but every time we come back we have to come eat here. My wife even went here for her homecoming dinner, and high school graduation. The creamy house dressing with the spicy garlic can't be beat with the house made rolls. I always have to get the cannelloni in pink sauce it is amazing.

There was a cockroach in my pasta while dining here on 3/26 for lunch on our anniversary. They told me that the exterminator had just come the day before and they would be coming back to fix the problem. I feel that it is their responsibility to ensure my food is clean. This place should be closed down until they figure out their issues. Other than that the service and food were below average.

Absolutely delighted to find a place that was unpretentious and assuming, with delicious, fresh, Italian food! Friendly staff and great prices for food and wine!

I had the lasangna and it was very good. The house rolls are delightful. Tasty. Location has limited parking and the service is slow at times but the food makes up for it.

I've been three times now. Each time, Lina is our server. She's very delightful and knows the menu very well. She remembers me as well as my dinner companion each time we come in. This is a quaint little family style restaurant. The ambiance is perfect for a family style dinner. I make it a point to try something different each visit and I've never been disappointed. The food always brings a variety of delicious flavors to my mouth. The portions are just about right for the price. I always end up bringing leftovers home with me. Overall, I VERY HIGHLY recommend Sorrento to all!!

Been here several times for business dinners and the food is absolutely wonderful. Great service -definitely a go to for good Italian. On a return visit with my family, service was not so great. The waitress missed the bread, salads were late and constant reminders were followed with "sorry we're very busy" (but not so). The menu won't break the wallet, and priced very reasonably. I would still come here again for the food alone, but service can be spotty in this cozy Italian favorite -so I can only give it four-stars.

This is rather disappointing Italian cuisine, but it is inexpensive so one might say the food quality matches the price. . I used to eat here frequently for standard fare like minestrone soup, spaghetti with meatballs, eggplant parmesan, etc. Not having been here in seven years, I was disappointed with how ordinary the food is. This is a charming neighborhood restaurant and a fixture on Old St. Augustine Rd for several decades, but the food is nothing to shout about. Everything is serviceable, but could be much better (on the other hand, that would make it much more expensive and the prices are quite reasonable). To my knowledge there isn't a really high-quality Italian restaurant in Jacksonville. If there is, please tell me! (no reason to mention the overrated, mediocre Maggiano's)

Sorrento is a neighborhood Italian restaurant. Ambiance is nice, cloth napkins and tablecloths, low lighting. The food was absolutely nothing special. All dinners come with a house salad and bread. The bread was the best part of the meal. Warm from the oven, crisp exterior and soft interior with a dusting of Parmesan cheese on top. It was begging for some butter, but none is served with it. The house salad is a joke. Mostly iceberg lettuce, two carrot peels, one cucumber coin. The house dressing is creamy Italian and is super garlicky and has a bite to it. For dinner we had fettuccine alfredo with chicken and the chicken positano supreme. The alfredo was ok. The pasta slightly overcooked, the chicken poached and the entire dish needing seasoning. The positano is a fried chicken breast topped with prosciutto, spinach, mushrooms and cheese. The chicken was nicely fried. The spinach was watery and again underseasoned. My pasta side was the same, slightly overcooked and very mediocre. For dessert we had the tuxedo mousse and tiramisu. Both desserts were obviously not made in house. The tiramisu was actually served in the plastic container it came in. The top comes off and attached to the bottom as a pedestal for the dish. During dinner, the couple behind us was really enjoying the restaurant ambiance and proceeded to play tonsil hockey throughout their meal. I hope they enjoyed the "special dessert" they told the waitress they had waiting at home. Seriously people, please keep your foreplay out of the restaurant. I'm trying to eat.

I've been coming here for years! It's in my neighborhood and this is what Classic Italian is about. Family oriented friendly environment. The food is great and my family and I will continue to come here!

I was so excited to discover this restaurant right by my house. It's family owned and operated for over 25 years and the owner is most likely the one cooking your meal. The food is fantastic, service always excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality and portions. The garlic knots are my favorite. I also love the Caprese salad, chicken tortellini soup and chicken piccata, among many other things. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Came here with friends for dinner as we were in Jacksonville for the night. Our server was attentive. The food was good, but a little too much cheese in the dishes we ordered. A very cozy & somewhat romantic atmosphere. Overall positive experience.

I was dining with a group of friends last night and forgot to check in, so I'm updating my review by simply stating that, as usual, the food and service was fantastic! I LOVE the Calamari (fried but still soft, not rubbery), the homemade chicken-tortellini soup (lots of pepper, very flavorful), and my old standby the Cannelloni (this time with white sauce!) Do yourself a favor and go - you'll thank me later!

We've used Sorrento's to cater our annual Oscar party for the last couple of years. We used to stop by here all the time when my siblings were in high school (Bolles grads). These dishes are classic italian. Delicious eggplant parmesan, excellent pasta primavera, tasty lasagna. I don't there's anything I would tell you to avoid. The rolls they serve are sinfully delicious: so buttery, nice balance of garlic, nice and warm. I don't know if I'd drive all the way in from the beach that often. But it's definitely worth it when it's brought to me.

Love their buttery garlic knots. So tasty! This place oozes old world charm and classic Italian cooking. You never feel rushed while you are feasting on all of their culinary delights. I personally am a fan of the lasagna. Oy! Delish! I'd say try anything they recommend! You can't go wrong with anything smothered in cheese and tomato sauce. Mangia Mangia!

"Good Price - Great Service - Average Food. The restaurant is pleasant and tastefully decorated having cream colored linen table covers and walls painted in warm peachy hues. But the fun stopped there. We arrived fairly early before the standard dinner hour and started with house wine and a Grilled Bruschetta appetizer. Both were great but the Bruscetta could have used a little more garlic. I perused the extensive wine selection but we both maintained our house variety. At the advice of my server, I ordered the grilled grouper, Sorrento style which came with a veggie medley and a side of spaghetti and sauce. The flavors were disappointing and were missing any Italian flare. But the overly done fish was probably the last straw. The texture was dense and stiff. I was not impressed by the spaghetti sauce either. My full blooded Italian DC ordered a pasta dished that she makes at home and wanted to compare theirs to hers. What a mistake that was. She called our waitress over not once but thrice to tell her to tell the chef what he was doing wrong. It was the wrong EVOO and the olives should be black not green, cracked garlic not diced and yada, yada, yada. I just smiled and remarked to myself, this isn't a bad place, I'm with the wrong person. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I expected LESS from my dinning companion. Or maybe I'm just spoiled and only like what I like. I was looking for something special and received something very ordinary. Yep, I should have dined alone and ordered the lamb.

This was the third time I have gone to this restaurant with my friends. Everything I have had at this restaurant was absolutely great. The atmosphere is a little cramp and the wall color and decor definitely needs updating but it is homey.

Hands down, this is one of the best Italian restaurants in the Jax area. It is tucked away on St. Augustine Road, off San Jose. Closest landmark would be The Bolles School. It is a family run restaurant, with a good selection of pasta, fish, chicken, and beef dishes. I personally love the Tortellini alla panna. When the weather cools down, they have two fireplaces that will add to the ambiance. The quality of food is great and the service is pleasant and not rushed. Our server made some great recommendations, including the white merlot! YUM! This is not a super fancy restaurant by any means, but it is definitely worth the drive out. Our dinner for two included 2 glasses of wine, appetizer, 2 pasta dishes (which came with bread and salad). came to a total of $48 (with tax, before tip).

We had another delicious dinner at Sorrento. We started with a couple of appetizers of stuffed mushrooms and shrimp scampi. Both of those appetizers were so good I did not think the entrees could top them The shrimp were good quality without too much garlic and the stuffed mushrooms were hot with just the right amount of cheese. My husband and I ordered the chicken saltimbocca which was excellent with a side dish of linguini with meat sauce. The chicken breast was on a bed of spinach layed with prosciutto, eggplant, cheese topped with a hard boiled egg with melted cheese and some sort of heavnly orange light sauce/juice perfect for mopping with the wonderful garlic rolls. We were way too full to even give dessert a thought. My main concern is the restaurant being near empty. Hopefully it was because of pouring rain or people staying home to watch the Gator game, it certainly was not because of the food and excellent service. Can't wait to go back and order the exact same thing!!!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
