I really want to go to Sony's - I'll never say this and be serious. To be fair I'll never say this about anyplace that has shade from the sun and doesn't burn sage on the grill to keep away mosquitos. I'm not big on chain bbq places - mostly because they are inconsistent with the food. Service is inconsistent everywhere - this place more they others Sonny's locations. Never had terrible service, never had outstanding service either. Servers will just up and disappear! Especially when you are waiting for the check? Like why would you make someone wait 13 minutes for a check? No clue why but this location is mostly used for catering bigger events for work. Food was not ready by agreed time. We start unpacking the lunch and we are missing gravy and salad dressing even though the server at the location made us wait an additional 10 minutes so that she could double check. We sit down to eat and everyone is quick to blanket their dry meat with sauce. You can never complain about portions. It's impossible for someone to still be hungry after this place. But not sure you'd be satisfied with the meal. Something about big orders or large groups? The food really is hit of miss. But I can always rave about the mac and cheese, corn nuggets (no powdered sugar), and banana pudding. Now that's good eatin - and I'll raise my mason jar to that.

Irresistible Rib special: IRS. Tax day equals 50% off their Rib plates. Since I've been jonesing for ribs and I'm a tax paying citizen, I treated myself to ribs here. Half off?! That's an instant three stars in my book of frugality. Server was friendly and super fast. We were there at 4:15 so it wasn't crowded yet. We got the dry rub and the St. Louis style ribs and split them. Tender, flavorful, hot, fresh, tasty. In fact, I polished these babies off. I think you have to really want to screw up to make ribs taste bad. Luckily, Sonny's goal is the opposite and we enjoyed it. Would we call home about it? Probably not. Would we pass up such a great deal? Naw, we'd do it again. It's not a fancy place, it's a chain restaurant but I found nothing to complain about. It is what it is: unpretentious and simple. You're here to eat and eat barbecue. The St. Louis style was good with the mustard sauce. The dry rub tasted funky with the mustard so I switched to the spicy sweet sauce and it was much better. Since I'm swearing off carbs, I packed the Texas toast and the Mac n cheese for the kids. They looked yummy but I can't attest to it. The kids ate it happily. As for us? Half off means a whole lot of satisfaction.

Had the Brisket Sandwich and it was amazing. It came with a drink that one cup was more than enough for one meal. My only issue is they said an over loaded sandwich and it was barely loaded. But it was a very reasonable price and the service was friendly and good. I would for sure go again on my way to Florida.

I love Sonny's, but my wife doesn't, so I take every opportunity to visit when going to lunch with co-workers. :) The Sonny's on University is par for the Sonny's course, which is to say, quite good. The salad bar always seems reasonably clean, fresh & well-stocked, and the BBQ pork lunch I tend to order always has tender slices of oinker, crispy fries and sweet, small cut cole slaw. It can be pretty jammed up right at the lunch hour, but hit it up before 11:30 or after 1 and you'll get seated right away.

Food is good for the price paid. Got the all you could eat ribs, even though I wasn't very hungry. They are good. The food was good, but man the seating area was really crummy. And the area around this place is crummy, with a bunch of strip clubs...

Had the all you can eat dry rub ribs. For two meals plus tip was about $35. Some of the ribs were super juicy and some were kind of dried out. The dry ones were easily remedied with bbq sauce though and it was all you can eat, so... I like Sonny's - pretty reliable, anywhere you go.

My job and preoccupation with eating "healthy" resulted in the following things coming out my mouth while dining here: - Ohmygosh--the drink glass is the size of my head and I have a BIG head! - This half-and-half tea (half sweetened and half unsweetened for the uninitiated) is super sweet--what would regular sweet tea taste like?!? - You mean there's an option to HOLD the powdered sugar on the corn nuggets?!? - BBQ sauces are Sweet, Sweeter and Sizzlin' Sweet? What's that unlabeled one? Oh, it's the mustard-based one. I guess BBQ sauces are based from ketchup, mustard or corn-syrup! -So the recommended sides are mac and cheese, fries or baked potato. You know, I guess I haven't had enough starch yet this meal period, and don't forget the garlic Texas toast! I still ate myself silly (smoked turkey--also A-OK) and left with a stomach ache because the portions are huge and if you put food in front of me, I will eat it. The BBQ meats were A-OK, and I added enough diabetes sauce to kick the flavor up. Without question you will get a lot of food here for your dollar--they even have unlimited ribs and an impressive salad bar. I wish I could have tried the red neck egg rolls but I believe they contained the forbidden meat (pork). Service was not the best--the really sweet server had to apologize to several guests because the kitchen was understaffed and she seemed to get overwhelmed by patron requests. Watch out--people get testy when they are hungry and are filled with sugar! If you like banana pudding with nilla wafers, this place has you covered.

Most of the wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive , though they certainly have their off days but they're far and few between. Overall a good example of a decent sonny's chain store. If you need some quick basic bbq it's a decent stop.

So, when you go get ribs from a restaurant, you expect them to be somewhat tender--they were horrible...the service here is ok (just ok) other than that it always takes forever and the good is just not up to par with other sonnys in Jax. Don't even order all you can eat--it takes about 15 minutes for a reorder--

I have loved Sonny's since I was a kid, it's been a family tradition since I can remember. In all those years, its never changed. I've been to at least six different locations in different states and these guys somehow manage to keep the same atmosphere and quality and even the same waitresses in every single one. The servers are always courteous but never in your face, my favorite kind. I love all the barbeque but living in NC I will always take the opportunity to have the beef briskett, something that is definitely not an NC thing. My favorite sauces are the original, sweet and mustard ...and you can't make me pick just one. Sometimes I mix them all together. I buy these sauces and take them home with me, you could put them on a turd. They taste that good. Can you tell I like Sonny's?

Sonny's on University Blvd features good food at reasonable prices and a solid choice place for lunch or dinner. While the food was enjoyable at a recent lunch, could not help but notice the place could really use an update. Also why do the servers insist on sweeping up the dropped french fries and other food crumbs while other patrons are eating! This seems to be SOP at Sonny's as this has occurred during other visits- knock it off!
