Fresh fish, quick service and excellent prices. It's a sushi trifecta. It is also very family-friendly. I'll be back.

I was a little nervous to try a new sushi place in a strip mall, with so few reviews to boot. Thankfully, the reviews were right on. We arrived in the mid-afternoon to a mostly empty restaurant with about a dozen tables and a small sushi bar. The atmosphere is pretty much what you'd expect from a sushi joint, with dark wood and bamboo, and a friendly staff. The menu has something for everyone, including a large list of rolls. Based on the menu, Philip Sushi specializes in sushi rolls (both the usual suspects like California roll, as well as a ton of "house roll" varieties), but they have lots of other fare. I was particularly looking forward to trying their reasonable (but not huge) list of nigiri-sushi. My wife selected several rolls, including the California, dragon, and shogun rolls. I opted for the salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and freshwater eel. When our order arrived, I knew we'd picked the right place. The portions were large, and the salmon absolutely melts in your mouth. We wound up ordering a second round of sushi and left obscenely full. Good times.

My first time here. A local eatery and the fish is excellent. Fresh, clean and delicious. I definitely will be coming back.

Philip has become our new favorite sushi place. No issues with service in the 5 - 6 times we've been. Sushi is excellent. I prefer less sticky rice (fewer carbs), and theirs always fits the bill. Fish seems fresh. Soups are good. Wine is okay. Ambiance is sparse.

I have been going to Philip Sushi since the first week they opened. It has only gotten better since! They have excellent service, food and atmosphere. Everything I've ever eaten there was always top notch. Their fried rice is outstanding. There isn't one thing that I haven't liked that was put in front of me. Any sushi/sashimi has always been very fresh and so tasty! Their website has very good coupons too. Check them out. They are my favorite sushi house in Jacksonville! Can't wait to go there again! philipsushi.com

Very happy with the quality of the food and service. We had a fantastic lunch thanks to the recommendations of the waitress.

Meh. I've experienced better. I really like the fact that they have a good choice of lunch options. Yashi doesn't have rolls for a lunch special and other places dont have good sashimi/nigiri combinations. This one has both, so I give it credit. It's the only reason I am giving it 3 stars and not 2. I usually get the salmon lunch special where it comes with 4 pieces of salmon nigiri and a salmon roll. It's.... OK. I asked them to put avocado in the roll one time and they said they would charge an extra $1.50. Which is annoying because the only reason i wanted avocado is because their fish is so fishy tasting and i needed some other flavor to counterbalance the poor quality of fish. I think I need to give up on my search for sushi in JAX because to be honest, if this place was in a big city, like New York, it would not survive. Would I return? Sure, but out of sheer convenience.

The sushi was okay don't get me wrong, but the service was absolutely terrible. If it was solely based on the food this place would be somewhere in between two and three stars, but as it is...I have to give it a one.

Their service is completely incompetent. I stopped by on the strength of their Yelp reviews, and instead of greeting and seating me, the server just gestured over his shoulder to an open table. When he came to the table, I told him I had heard good things about their sushi and asked for his recommendations. Instead of engaging me and discussing their sushi offerings, he pointed to the menu, said "these are are sushi rolls" and walked away. I left a $5 on the table and walked out. If that's the kind of incompetence in the FRONT of the house, I hate to imagine what goes on in the kitchen. Stay away!

Philip Sushi is located in a little strip mall on Philips Hwy. Stopped in for lunch this past Saturday with my sister and was pleasantly surprised. It is a tiny place with only about 15 tables. The place is very clean, well decorated and played a great soundtrack throughout the restaurant! I don't know if it was Japanese music or not, but I had not heard it before. The Sushi is wonderful! I got the Lunch Special Rolls, 2 for $7.50 or 3 for $9.95. They were fresh, pretty to look at and even better tasting! They didn't overpower you with a lot of rice and the fish portion was substantial. My sister got the Sushi Special, buy 2 rolls, get 1 @ 50% off. Comes out to about the same price as my three rolls, but this way we got to try different rolls. Hers were just as good and we had to take a lot home. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs! Now I don't know about their weekday lunch, but I can only imagine that it is packed and you would need to get there early or come for a later lunch.

Went for lunch today for a sushi, sashimi and a bowl of soup. The cuts of tuna, yellowfin, and salmon were of a very high quality and the presentation was great. Clear soup was delicious. I'll be back

My mom works very close to Philip Sushi and absolutely loves it. A little while back I picked up lunch there for us and the sushi was great. I had some tuna and salmon and it tasted great and very fresh. When I picked it up at lunch time on a weekday, the place was packed (as was the parking lot). More recently, my family and I ate at Philip Sushi for dinner. When we first arrived we were the only ones there and the waiter was very attentive (almost too attentive). As the evening went on and the place filled up he seemed to have disappeared. 3 of us ordered hibachi (2 shrimp, one scallops) and my brother had sushi. The dinner hibachi serving was huge. I made two meals of it and was stuffed after both. The only negative food wise, I could think of is that they leave the shrimp tails on, which is kind of a pain. The food is fresh and tasty and the serving size is very generous.

With such rude service I don't understand how this place is still in business! I came in with my husband, and daughter for a light bite. Upon walking in from the heat outside we were directed to a table and asked what we wanted to drink. We asked for water and a water with a cup with a lid for our 3 year old. She stared at us for an uncomfortable couple of seconds and says "just water?" It would have been fine but the staring was uncomfortable. We waited a bit and my husband wasn't sure if he wanted to get a sushi roll. Meanwhile I went ahead and ordered a kids steak hibachi for my daughter and a stir fried chicken udon. Now, in the past I was always able to switch out the salad for a clear soup and when I asked about it this time the lady quickly snapped back and said "No, this comes with salad, you can only get salad." Fine, not a big deal I understand if they don't allow substitutions, but she could have been a little nicer and not so snappy. I almost got up and left but for the sake of our daughter and her hunger we didn't get up and leave. My husband decided to not get anything else so we didn't have to be there longer than necessary. When the lady came back and asked if we were going to order anything else we told her no, thank you but that we were planning on ordering tempura Oreos. Again the disgust on her face was very obvious. The food came out and I have to say that this place would have gotten an awesome review from me because the food was really good. But alas the service was awful. The stir fry udon noodles were packed full of veggies and the flavor was very good. My child's steak hibachi was bigger than expected and my daughter enjoyed her food. Her fried rice was tasty and her steak cooked well. It was tender enough for her to eat. When we were done with all the food the lady brought out the check. I asked her if the tempura Oreos would be coming out soon and she says to me "Oh? You still want those? I didn't think you wanted them" -_- Again, this lady couldn't hide how disgusted or annoyed she was with us when we had not done anything to her. We got the Oreos which were tasty. We finally got our finalized bill and I had a coupon from one of their advertisements from the money pages. The ladies look of disgust was the last straw. We just paid and left. I will probably never come back here again. So I guess you will be fine coming here if you don't have kids, don't use a coupon from the advertisements and don't drink just water and order a plate for every single person in your party, no matter their age.

I was in the mood for Sushi and this was on the way to some other errands I needed to run. At first it seemed like they were annoyed we walked in 30 minutes before they closed but they let us eat. All the food and the sushi was really good and fresh. The prices were pretty average for sushi. I'd go back if I was in the mood for sushi and in this part of town.

Oh my, we stopped in here knowing nothing about this place and am so glad we did! The Ocean Roll is Devine, exactly like what sushi should taste like. The Sleeping Beauty had us ordering round 2. Every single roll we ordered was fantastic. The only thing that was a let down was soup/salad didn't come with a roll, but at $1.95 each easily added on. The house Sake is a great deal too. I am going to have to drive across town and pass many sushi restaurants just to get the the Ocean Roll and Sleeping Beauty!

The sushi is a 5. The service is a 2. I don't even care. The sushi more than makes up for the lack of character in the service department. There were only 3 workers total. 1 server and two sushi chefs on a Friday night. Granted it's not a huge restaurant but wow, that is a very lean crew and it showed. We popped in. 7 tables were occupied and there were 2 tables available for a party of 3. No hostess in sight, we decided we'd seat ourselves. One table needed to be bussed so one choice left. We waited a bit more at the table, looking over the menu and no one else showed. The two chefs frantically working seemed to be the only personnel. We asked the table next to us if we were supposed to go up and give our order to the chef. In a laid back manner. they assured us that there will be someone to come take our order. Just chill ladies, just chill. When she finally showed, they ratted us out with a grin. But it was ok. The server was emotionless and expressionless, her manner like a blank sheet of paper. A table of confused customers? *Shrug* Honestly, I don't know how long it took for our sushi to arrive because we ordered 2 hot sakes, an appetizer, soup and salad. These items came out quickly and I was in excellent company so it didn't seem like an excessive wait. Perfectly timed actually. Because my Ocean Roll was sooooo good I'm gonna have to switch languages: Mama Mia it was Delicioso! Not being hungry, I hadn't ordered more than the one roll but this one roll blew me away. Maybe they were having an unusually great night in terms of sushi quality, but I hope not because I intend on making a point to travel way out of my way to return. I hope this scrumptiousnesss IS the usual. The unsmiling waitress stopped by and asked if we needed our check. After saying yes, we mentioned how great the sushi was and she volunteered that we should've had the sleeping beauty. All three of us looked at each other and collectively said, "bring it on--we'll share it." Apparently, we aren't great at delayed gratification. We weren't disappointed. Beautiful and yummy. This roll sealed the deal for us. Philip Sushi is not close to our homes but like the neutral service, we don't even care. We are coming back for more.

Went in with a sushi craving....came out with 4 rolls......my hubby said get a lot, so I ordered 4 different rolls and we came home and dug in! They have so many different rolls here, i picked a assortment of rolls Volcano roll: deep fried roll with tuna and crab Out of Control roll: shrimp tempura with spicy tuna on top Fancy roll: shrimp tempura with krab and seaweed salad on top Sexy Boy: krab, cream cheese, topped with shrimp and mango slices Every single roll was so good, with the crunchy things and numerous sauces drizzled around, they were hardy rolls that filled us up. It was quite expensive, with total coming to around $40 but we were stuffed and satisfied. Is it weird that I love seaweed salad? :)

Lots of veggie sushi roll options! I had the sweet potato roll, a caterpillar roll, and tea. None of them disappointed. My tea was refilled in a timely manner, and was always hot. Minus a star because my rolls (main course) were brought out at the same time as my friend's appetizer. Thankfully, I had two rolls to his one roll main course, so we still finished eating around the same time.

Not sure why this place was so dead when we went. The sushi combinations are pretty good. There's a fair variety of raw and cooked sushi rolls so it can accommodate folks who likes sushi rolls, but not raw fish. It sounds kinda perplexing, I know, but I have friends like that. Anyway, I thought this place was another Americanized suburban sushi joint, but I was surprised to see more options than the usual mayo-laden sushi rolls. For instance, they had $15 chirashi-don. Interesting...I'd like to give that a whirl the next time I visit. The server was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of the foods. The lunch specials was crazy cheap. I think it was like 3 or 4 rolls for less than $15 dollars or something ridiculous enough for my eyes to pop out of its sockets (figuratively.) Anyway, we decided to get 4 rolls because they had a buy 3 rolls get the 4th half off promotion. We got the sexy/spicy lady/girl, (deep fried) dynamite (?), ocean rolls, and one other roll that had the shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura was actually my favorite. I think the dynamite one had a sweet plum sauce on top. So if you like sweet and savory dichotomy, you should try it. I would double check with the server though bc I am 100 percent certain of the name. They were all good and plenty.

This is one of my favorite sushi spots in Jax. Although the service is okay (not friendly in any way, they're just there to get the job done), the food is what keeps us coming back. Sushi/sashimi seems to be fresh, as DH always gets the chirashi when we go and has had no complaints. I usually get a roll or two and order from their kitchen and have no complaints either. Our most recent visit, I was blown away by how delicious the fried rice was. We'll definitely keep coming here to get our sushi fix.

Foods amazing. They remember me and my order every time. It's always dead in there and I can't see why because their food is sooo good!

My sweetheart introduced me to this little joint. I love sushi and always like trying new sushi places. It seems the small, hole in the wall ones rarely disappoint. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef served a sample of his avocado roll. It was excellent, with fresh avocado as the main part of the roll. We also ordered one of the of the board specials. The spicy girl, melt in your mouth goodness right there brother...we didn't eat much cause we just filled up on popcorn but I think anytime were on this side of town, this will be our sushi place..

We come here all the time and majority of the rolls are really good. They also have specials but not sure they still do..."get 3 rolls buy the 4th half off" The restaurant is small but quaint and it's a hit and miss when it comes to the service, usually we luck out but they make up with the rolls :)). Did I mention this is our favorite place for sushi in Jacksonville?... Nothing fancy pants tho if that's what's you're looking for. Just damn good food!

I had decided beforehand that after getting out of the movie theater, we'd head next door to get some sushi. I hadn't had sushi in a while so I was excited to see the high marks on Yelp for this place. First off, this place is small compared to the other restaurants in the same shopping center but I guess you don't need a whole lotta room for good food. We walked in and it wasn't that busy. A server greeted us and told us to sit whereever we wanted. A guy and his lady friend waved for us to sit at the table in front of him. My friend and I looked at each other, shrugged, and sate where he wanted us to. No biggie. Without missing a beat another server came by and greeted us, gave us menus, and took our drink orders. My friend chose water and I chose Green Tea. Tea came out in a handleless mug and was nice and hot. The server came back shortly afterwards with hot sake purchased by the the guy who wanted us to sit at the table. Awww how nice, free sake from a stranger. We turned around and thanked him kindly. I had been avoiding alcohol for a while just for personal wellbeing but I believe the universe had decided that the time had come. I believe I drank most of it though. I'd never had sake before and boy was it strong. I liked it though. There was a lot of sushi choices so we took our time going over the menu. My friend finally decided on the Twin Roll (spicy salmon, eel crunch caviar, and salmon on top) and the Yummy Roll (Soybean paper wrapped lobster salad, avocado, lettuce and mango with shrimp on top w. special sauce). He really enjoyed both of them while I liked the Yummy Roll over the Twin Roll. I ordered the Baymeadows Roll (Soybean paper wrapped shrimp tempura, krabmeat, cream cheese, avocado & mango w. special sauce) and the the Godzilla Roll (Spicy tuna, white fish, krabmeat, avocado, deep-fried w. chef's special sauce & caviar). Holy moly, both of those rolls were dang good! I liked the Gozilla Roll better because it had a bit of everything in it, looked visually appealing and it was deep fried, of course. My friend agreed with me. We had no room for dessert which was a shame because I really wanted some green tea ice cream. I'll have to come back for some. This is a very good spot to come for food after catching a movie.

Amazeballs!!!! Friendly service, very clean and warm decor. Really good gyoza (the sauce for it was awesome). Sushi creativity and selection was outstanding. We got the dynamite roll, godzilla roll, the under control roll, and dancing California roll. Sushi presentation was beautiful and the sauces and texture were amazing. I think I found my new fav sushi spot.

I love this place! It's just a little hole in the wall kinda place, but that makes it even more special. A little dark inside, makes for a nice date night. I have been wanting to bring my honey so when we were on this side of town, after a movie, I jumped on the opportunity to convince him to eat! Of course, that is never hard to do. They great you as soon as you open the door. We always opt to sit at the sushi bar, I like watching them make the sushi rolls. And these guys like to talk to you and tell you their favorite. We were given a sample of a new roll one of the guys were workin on... tasty! Really anything you order here is going to be deliciouso. I've never had a bad experience with them. As always, the clear soup is a must! Try the spicy girl... it's not too spicy and it is fantastic! and don't forget to tip the sushi makers... what they do is art!

The food is soooo worth the wait! I'll start with the bad: We've waited over 40 minutes for our orders on more than one occasion. We kinda expect it now. HOWEVER, this is because Philip Sushi is a tiny family owned restaurant and their tables are almost always full when we walk in. They're definitely a popular sushi spot in Southside. They have the best chicken fried rice I've had in Jacksonville, so craving it a couple times a month has become a thing. They also have a great roll selection and my non sushi eating bf raves about the chicken katsu. I pour their shrimp sauce over everything.

Sushi was decent. No atmosphere and not much in the way of service. I would recommend this place for a quick lunch but not for a sit down dinner

This place is literally five minutes from my house -- so I was really hoping the sushi would be promising. Unfortunately, Jacksonville sushi typically lets me down. This case wasn't any different. It was pretty standard. Nothing amazing. Too much sauce as usual. I find that sushi in Jacksonville is covered in sauce and fried to disguise the lack of quality in the fish, which is pretty scary since you're eating it raw a lot of the time. (I've been spoiled by other restaurants. See Uchi & Pubbelly Sushi.) I could look past the subpar sushi -- but the service was awful. I mean, AWFUL. I think there may have been a language barrier between myself and the servers, but they probably said five words to me. My four year old son was with me and he loves to talk. He'll spark up a conversation with you as you're walking by. They ignored any of his attempts to talk to them, which I thought was rude. They weren't helpful or engaging about their menu. I left frustrated that I spent any money in their restaurant. I won't be returning. I don't care how close and convenient it is...

I came here the day with a friend if mine. I've eaten sushi all over town and have a family member who manages a big sushi place in OP for the last years. So I know my sushi. Cute place but when I walked in wasn't greeted by anyone. Not because there wasn't people around, they were there.. Just walking around or filling up on condiments for the tables. Fifteen minutes later I was finally seated. The menu selection was not to big and not to small. Prices were decent. After reading the reviews here I expected delicious sushi to come out. My friend and I only ordered 4 rolls and was no where near impressed, presentation wasn't to thrilling but it was dull which was good. However when it came down to eating it.. I felt like I was like premade sushi you would buy at publix or something. The volcano roll wasn't even a volcano.. It was fried(?!) Green dragon roll had barely any eel in it as goes for the jaguar roll. Over all it was OK. I wouldn't wanna go back.

I had wonderful service here when I came here for lunch the other day. I enjoyed one of their "lunch" boxes which had a little bit of everything. (chicken katsu ) I would return if I were in the area.
