Service was embarrassing. Found this place at 11pm on a Friday night. They don't close until 2am, so we expected a normal experience. We were the only table in the dining room. There were other customers in an adjacent room smoking hookahs. After being told to sit wherever we wanted to, we waited nearly 10 minutes for a server. I never got her name, but she needs to be trained extensively before being allowed to serve again. She took our beer and food orders at the same time because we had practically memorized the menu by the time she greeted us. After nearly 10 minutes of waiting for our beers, my friend walked up to our server who was standing behind the bar, and asked about our drinks. She immediately jumped to go pour them. Two of the three beers we ordered were not correct, but we opted to just drink what she brought us. The food was very good. Two of us had a burger and I had an over-priced Greek Salad with a chicken skewer on top. (I actually ordered it topped with gyro meat, but she entered the more expensive chicken skewer instead. I didn't complain.) When we were ready to order another round of beers, I decided to play it safe and order a "Fat Tire in a bottle." She had me repeat it twice. When she came to the table, she brought me a draft beer. It ended up being some 9% ABV Belgium-style Tripel. I got up and walked to the bar to tell her. I really just wanted to trade it for a Fat Tire in a bottle and be done with it, but she insisted that I keep it and it would be "free." So I did. When we got our checks, I was charged for 2 beers, so it wasn't "free." She got the other guys' beers mixed up on their checks too, and when they asked about it, she explained that it was okay "because all of the beers are five dollars." This was not true. Even the beers printed on our tickets were not all five dollars. Long story short: food was good, but service was embarrassingly bad. I feel sorry for her, but she has no business waiting tables.

One and half stars: One for nice selection of beer on tap, and a half star for nice waitress. We went on a Friday at 7:30pm - not busy. Nice enclosed patio but cigar smokers. Food was HORRIBLE. My mom ordered the fried shrimp platter, husband ordered gyro hamburger, I ordered the Hangover pizza (cheese, bacon, potato and eggs). Husband said gyro burger was meh, fries were good. Mom said fried shrimp was bland (clearly just frozen and thrown into fryer) - she was also disappointed in the restaurant. I ordered the pizza with eggs over hard. I like eggs, just not runny. Waitress said no problem. I wish it hadn't been a problem. Food took forever to come (40 min). Finally, the other two dinners came out and I waited a little longer. Then it came out with runny eggs all over the top. Waitress said she told the cook that I didn't want any runny yolk but he asked her to bring it out and see if I would accept it. I sent it back to be thrown in the oven for a little longer. . . Everyone finished their dinners and I was still waiting. When it did come out, I just asked for a to go box and didn't eat any. Waitress could tell that I was CLEARLY disappointed with the situation - I even told her we would not be returning. But no manager or cook came to apologize, no discount was offered, etc. She apologized but nothing was done to mend the situation. Just go here for drinks and then head over to Taverna for dinner.

I have been awaiting the opening of this establishment for quite some time, as I live in the San Marco area & have been hoping for a new hang-out spot. Mezze was disappointing to say the least. The location is optimal, at Hendricks & Atlantic, and the indoor & outdoor eating space is appealing, but the food was simply bad. I even liked the decor, ambience, etc, but that wasn't enough to make up for the bad food. My husband & I went with a safe pick, basil margarita pizza, and it came out completely soupy (see the pic). The outside crust was cooked, but that's about it. It was also very bland. The tomatos weren't ripe & there were maybe 5-6 pieces of basil on the whole thing. My husband didn't even want to take home the leftovers, and that says a lot. It was easily the worst pizza I've had. They also advertise 35 beers on tap, and yes, they have that, but there is no happy hour. Priced at $5-7 a beer, needless to say, we won't be coming back if we are wanting more than 1-2. The service was fine, and I still hope that this place makes it. They just need to reassess the quality of their menu.

What an amazing place!! Food was so good. Service was amazing. Sincerely. Do yourself a favor and please go! The honey hookah and trio app was just plain amazing. Cannot say anything better about the place and the amazing owner!

The food is subpar and the hookah is fine. Ordered cosmos and they tasted like watered down cherry soda. My table was neglected. Possibly due to a big crowd but very short staffed. Female waitresses were worked to the bone while the males did nothing. They didn't even want to acknowledge us. Left a sour taste in our mouths. Customer service was pretty poor. Was not helped after the initial order.

I recently had lunch here with my boss for a meeting, and they had informed us they just opened for lunch. The waitress was very friendly and was great at explaining the new lunch menu. My boss ordered the traditional gyro, and I ordered their gyro meat brick oven pizza. The dough was wonderful and I even ate the crust, which I normally don't do. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and the owner even came out to greet us. They have a TON of beers on tap and the atmosphere was clean and very cozy. Our ticket was a little over $20, which was very affordable for lunch for two and I will definitely be back. They also have hookah, and an outdoor patio which opens at night. Fun little spot in a great location.

The service was ok but I was the only one in the restaurant. I can see why the cooks talked very loudly the entire time I sat inside. Eventually moved to the patio. The pesto white pizza was just ik, there was so much pesto on it I had to breath my teeth before bed. I would go back if I was with friends and they were busier.

I thought it had potential when i walked in, but it was downhill from there. We can for the 2 for 1 drinks, but those were no longer a happy hour option...but the manager was nice enough to honor it for us. My husband agrees with a previous posting on the gryo meat be out of a frozen box with perfect grill marks on it, and perfectly formed mush. It hard to go wrong with caprese salad, but they did. There was a tiny about of balsamic added, and the basil seemed to be freeze dried leaves instead of fresh. I didn't care for the white pizza, but that might be because I need the sauce/more flavor. I am pretty sure the pizza would have had an A rating if I had gotten another pizza. The crust was perfect. We had a party of about 9 and waited a lifetime to get our credit cards run.

The food was ok, if a bit over priced, I'd give it two or three stars. The service was awful. Our waitress was terribly inattentive, we had to ask several times for my coffee, a to-go box, the check, new coals. It wasn't busy. At one point, we noticed the two waitresses talking to each other in the back if the restaurant after the second time we'd asked about my coffee. No apologies offered for having to be reminded multiple times. Very frustrating. I don't think I'll be back, there are plenty of other hookah bars to choose from.

I hate to post a negative review of a restaurant in my neighborhood but I hope they get the message and clean up this disgrace. We arrived on a Friday night. There were a few tables occupied but not busy at all. Eventually, the waitress took our drink orders. After receiving our drinks the waitress returned to our tables and stated that she could tell by the looks on our face that something had happened. After some prodding we showed her what we had found floating in my husbands beer. She said it was her fault and that it was actually tissue paper. She added that if we were just trying to get free beer that it wouldn't work as she would pour that one out. What? We ordered an appetizer that had not arrived when our meal came. We reminded our waitress and told her we still wanted it. We asked the table next to us how the pizza was and with hesitation said, just ok. We ordered the gyro and gyro platter which I highly encourage you not to do. The meat really isn't meat but a gelatinous mass that I"m sure comes in a perfectly formed square. It was mush in your moth and might be good for those who have no teeth. My son said it reminded him of cat food. Our waitress never returned to the table and certainly never brought that appetizer. Is it any wonder that no one ever asked how things were? Someone else brought over our check in the not busy restaurant. We left sad that indeed we would not have a new local hang out.

We went to Mezze bar and grill tonight. It was late when we got there and the place was slow. As a side note Traverna was slow when we walk past it before we went to Mezze. We sat outside in the courtyard area of the establishment. If you have not heard of this place please note it is a Hookah restaurant and bar. Obviously there is not smoking inside the restaurant but it is allowed outside in the courtyard area. Since it was slow obviously it was not loud. I will say some of the passing cars with the louder mufflers made the courtyard rather loud but they passed quickly and thankfully there are not many cars like that in the San Marco neighborhood. The inside restaurant looks comfortable and it did not appear that you would be sitting on top of each other. They have a nicely stocked bar with over 30 beers on tap and in bottles. There was a decent wine selection as well. There may be a possibility of noise being an issue if the place was packed but we will have to wait to see on a return trip. We started with an appetizer of Calamari and we had the Lamb kabobs a white pizza and a margarita pizza. The calamari had sort of like a panko batter on it which was different. However they were cooked perfectly and I thought they were very enjoyable. Our meals came out promptly. The lamb was cooked as ordered and was very enjoyable. The white pizza was good but if you are not a fan of pesto flavor you may want to pass on this. I enjoyed the piece that I tried but the center portion of the pizza was a little soft. The edge of the crust was cook perfect so I could not understand why the middle was not the same. The Margarita pizza had plenty of toppings on it but it had the same problem as the white pizza with the middle soft and undercooked. If you took the correctly cooked portions of the pizza they were tasty and enjoyable but regrettably a disappointment with the soft undercooked center. The Lamb was very good and we will definitely repeat that when we come back. I would agree with the other reviews on the pizza that the centered needed to be cooked better. But the portion that cooked correctly was good. We will go back and definitely order the kabobs. I can't say if I would try the pizza again Afterwards we tried a Hookah. I am not a hookah smoker so this was new to me. The server took her time explaining it and we decided on a flavor. It was quickly prepared for us and enjoyed learning to use it over a couple of glasses of wine. Overall we had a very nice experience in this place. The service was great; there was not a long wait for the food in our experience, afterwards we hung around and tried something new. If you are looking for a nice light atmosphere and a good time trying something different I would give this place a try.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Thursday, May 23, 2013. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. The owners of Layla's Mediterranean Grill, Bar & Hookah Lounge in San Marco, shuttered by fire last summer, have revived the Hendricks Avenue storefront as Mezze Bar & Grill. The restaurant, which launched a soft opening in April that culminates with a grand opening tonight, pairs a familiar menu of tapas, salads, grilled meats, pizzas and flavored-tobacco hookah pipes with an exposed kitchen and sleek dining room upgrade. Let's hope that the upgrades keep coming, notably to food preparation and service. Both need an extra few minutes on the grill for Mezze to sizzle. My dining partner and I settled into the familiar patio area, a Layla's holdover, with flat screens hovering above a wall of gleaming hookah pipes behind the bar. The early Thursday-evening crowd was sparse, and our bubbly server delivered a friendly tone and our cocktails. Mezze sports nearly 35 drafts--mass, craft and crafty--a healthy wine list and full bar, with nightly happy hour specials. For starters, we dialed up the Dip Trio ($12), pita bread with homemade sides of tzakziki, garlic hummus and baba ghanouj. The baba was pleasantly chunky and smoky and the hummus was smooth, consistent and easy to like. The pita bread was thick and doughy at the edges and would have been a smash hit if grilled. My partner then seized on the Mezze Fries with Freshly Chopped Rosemary ($5) and Seared Cheese with Sauteed Tomatoes ($8), along with the Chicken Skewers, rice and Greek salad ($16) as a main course. I opted for the Vegetarian Falafel Burger with Rosemary Fries ($9). Cue bumps in the road. After what seemed like excessive prep time for a sparsely patronized restaurant at that hour, the a la carte fries and salad arrived. Then came "my" Falafel Wrap (also $9), which our server or the chef must have misread but I was too hungry to send back. Still minutes later, no sign of the cheese or the skewers. I held off on exploring the wrap as a courtesy to my friend, which our server picked up on and asked me if everything was all right. The skewers later arrived, followed by the seared cheese. Evidently the cheese never made it in with the original order. The chicken skewer chunks were largely tender and juicy but some were unevenly sliced and cooked, with one clearly showing pink. The fries restored my faith: they were thick-cut, showered with rosemary and destined to be fodder for post-happy hour munchie seekers. The Greek salad's bountiful feta and black olives were a treat. And while it wasn't my intended entrée, the Falafel Wrap was well done, with crispy falafel and tzakziki in two halves of a substantial soft flour wrapper. When the seared cheese arrived, a satisfying plate of what resembled rafts of mozzarella with plump, thick-sliced tomatoes greeted us. For dessert, I opted for the Cheesecake ($7), baked in the restaurant's gas brick oven. The simple, thick slab, lightly dressed with raspberries, was the highlight of my evening and plenty to share and to even take home. My partner chose the Baklava ($5), a respectable offering designed for sharing. Service was attentive and friendly, if slow at times. Prices were reasonable, with tapas $6-12 and entrees $9-24. And judging from the menu and the overall scene, along with the lack of a kids' menu, Mezze is clearly targeting an adult clientele. The restaurant formally opens tonight, featuring samples of wine, craft beers, appetizers and hookahs from 5 to 7 p.m. Setting aside service struggles during its soft opening, Mezze's package shows promise as it stages its own renaissance in San Marco. This place is garbage. They had a political party on the day of the election without even knowing if the person who the party was for even won. Jay Farhat rented the place out, left the open sign on and when we walked in as paying, unsuspecting patrons/voters, we were rudely kicked out by a small man. Never eat here.

Well let me start by saying it was not all bad...Deniz the waitress was awesome!! Went down hill from there: Bruschetta Pizza had so much garlic it almost choked me wife ordered the shrimp kabobs and they were extremely tough, like they were frozen. If they weren't frozen they should be ashamed they can not cook shrimp and if they were they need to carry their butts to any seafood fresh and rethink how they do things. The hummus was delicious so I am figuring it was store bought seeing how they messed everything else up and a glass of wine for the wife and extra pita bead for the hummus $60 for 2 people..HIGHWAY ROBBERY!! If you do not mind spending that much money go to Taverna, BB's etc. better food and still about the same price. Close it up or change how you do things!

From Philly, I can't get over how amazing this place is. I have been dying to find a place his authentic since if was in the 215! The service is impeccable, and the food is incredible. Did I mention the hookah?! So good and the prices totally agree with my wallet. Definitely my new favorite, and can't wait to return and have this amazing gyro pizza again. Love mezze!

Great customer service, hookah, and happy hour can save any place. Doing some late night sight seeing and I'm completely lost. I come in looking for directions and decide to hang around (after not finding my designated area). Bar is pretty decent. Lot of drafts, nice list of wine, and very well prepared drinks. But the food need a serious upgrade. Not many people in the bar on a Tuesday night even though there is a great Happy Hour. But food took forever! The wait was ridiculous. When you get a long wait...the whole time you're saying to yourself "It better be worth it." It wasn't. As a bar it was pretty sweet. But the "Grill" needs work.

After movie tapas were a nice surprise. The services was friendly and quick. They offered a cider I hadn't had before that was unusually tasty. The gyro sliders were light, fresh and a perfect late night dinner.
