Hands down the best mexican food I've had since I moved to Jacksonville from San Diego, CA. I faithfully go here once a week and it's consistently delicious, filling and VERY satisfying food - our server knows us and is always friendly. For me there are a few things I look at for when I go for Mexican food. The main one is the delIciousness of the refried pinto beans. Beans are simple, but VERY easy to screw up. If you can cook beans authentically and correctly consistently, you're unlikely to screw up anything else. That being said, Tapatias' beans are amazing. As much as I want to make a healthier menu choice (I.e., rice only), I never do because I can't remember having better. The second thing I look for in good Mexican food is offal meats. Seriously, if you're willing to stake a diner's experience and willingness to return on tripe, lengua or cabeza, the chicken will probably be done right. Though tripe, tongue, and head meat aren't really my thing, they're all pretty good. The chicken, btw, is ridiculous. It's mostly white meat, stewed in flavorful tomato-based broth. Try it on the burrito Christopher. Another thing I look for (at least in ethnic restaurants) is that people of the represented ethnicity actually eat there. Perhaps that's an odd way to think of it, but if you're making authentic and quality food, it will probaby appeal to people d the represented ethnicity. If it doesn't, it's probably a bad sign. I hear more Spanish than English at LT and I like it :) Other nice components to the LT experience.... Jarritos for sale, negra modelo by the bottle, pinatas, cowboy hats and soccer cleats for sale. An amazing lunch that I look forward to every week AND I can equip myself for a cattle drive on my way out? How could you miss?

Like Jay L. and Kathy. T I am also from CALI and miss traditional Mexican food in JAX. Cali has the best by far. After reading both reviews I stopped in for lunch since it is located close to my office. I have to say this was some pretty good Mexican food. Asada Soft Taco- A little dry but good, make sure and add lime Chicken Enchilada- GREAT red sauce is very good Chicken Hard Taco- GREAT mostly white meat very moist I would recommend eating there since bringing the taco back to work made it soggy. I also asked for the hottest hot sauce they had, the waitress said you will remember me after handing it over, and believe me (I'm Indian) this was some hot stuff. I will def. be back.

The worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. Ordered the large asada burrito, (California burrito I believe) it was super dry and blan... I asked for some Mexican caso to try and moisten it up and the waitress brought out graded caso, I asked if she could at least melt it and she said they don't really do that. I will never go back there

Came in for lunch and it was as advertised. Nothing fancy, just great authentic tasting Mexican food at a very reasonable price!

Thanks yelpers for rating this place. I have driven past it a few times and thought it was a dump so never went in, but man was I wrong! As everyone else has said, you literally have to walk thru a store which sells cowboy boots, soccer cleats, tons of sodas, and fried pork rinds! To the left of this stuff are tables. Just sit down and someone will be right with you. The menu is in English, most people working there speak Spanish. Just point and order! The supreme nachos are on the lunch menu but we were able to order them for dinner for $1 extra. They were amazing!! You have to get these nachos. My husband and I also ordered four tacos and left complete stuffed! All for the whopping price tag of $16. It was great and we will definitely be back!

The food here was pretty horrible and far from authentic. I saw the other one star comment, but still decided to give it a try based in the overall rating and pictures. The chips were stake and the salsa was way too salty and had an overpowering taste of onion. I absolutely love salt so that's saying something. Our burrito was soaked in sauce that tastes like it had a very strong ketchup base taste. I got a taco in a hard shell... I've never gotten that before from any Mexican food place that called itself authentic. Ha! The rice was bland and the beans were burnt. I don't know what kind of tortilla was used to wrap the burrito, but it was also disappointing. The food is inexpensive, but I've paid less for better.

Super cool find! Actually looking for a Tijuana flats per the GPS (we were out of town) we saw this place. Quick yelp indicated we should try it. First you walk in and it's a convenience store, so i could buy cowboy boots and a pack of razors. To the left is the little restaurant with coolers of beer. Originally decided to take out, I grabbed a beer and then decided to stay in. Good cheap tacos, flavorful. Seemed pretty authentic to me.

Truly one of the closest thing to traditional mexican food in Jacksonville, Fl.

Super sketchy place with THE BEST Mexican food in Jax. I don't even care that I'm eating in a grocery store when I come here. Fajitas for 2 is enough food to feed 3 or 4 people, EASILY. The portions are huge, the prices are low and the beer is cold!

Four stars for authenticity. This place is in the back of a Mexican food store (as many have mentioned). We walked in and sat down, then got back up to pick our drinks out of a cooler. I think we may have been the only non regulars there. The food was good, and better than most Mexican I've had.

I can eat authentic mexican food everyday and many times I do. This place is unnoticed from the outside to most people but when you find it you never let go. I love there Tacos and Tortas! Its a great To Go place!

My stomach is so happy that my fellow Yelpers directed me to this place!!! I had a serious hankering for some authentic Mex... so I put on my "eatin dress" and we headed down to my old neck of the woods on Baymeadows. Everything great that has been written about this place is true. Yes, you walk into a little store, but we had the heads up and took a turn to the tables on the left. Beer, Mexican sodas and drinks are in a cooler like a convenience store, and our server gave us the go ahead to grab one if we liked. Not a huge variety of beers, but the usual suspects were available, so I grabbed a Modelo and my man grabbed a Corona. I actually panicked for a moment when I didn't see the hyped nachos on the menu... so I asked our server, who directed me to the lunch menu on the back. Phew! Nachos Supreme ordered and first on the agenda. They were out in a flash and WOW, are these things huge! A ginormous platter plate just heaping with goodness. These are not your pick up a little chip variety and require a fork. They were loaded with tender and juicy, perfectly seasoned shredded chicken and strips of steak...the juice melds perfectly with the queso and creates what my boyfriend called "Mexican gravy." Fork on a dollop of sour cream, quac, lettuce and beans for the ultimate mouth watering bite. I know people tend to use "they were the best I've ever had" a lot, but these nachos are a serious contender. We could have made a complete meal out of these for two people and almost bumped heads about five times hovering over the plate for big bites. Amazing. We were both pretty full about 1/4 of the way through, but went ahead and ordered entrees anyway: I had the Chili Colorado, beef chunks smothered in red chili sauce and the boy went for the carnitas. The Chili Colorado was tender, only a tad spicy, and salty, which when placed on a fresh tortilla made for a perfect balance. The carnitas were a bit dry, compared to everything else, but had a great flavor.... and honestly we were still thinking about those nachos. Seriously authentic with fast no-fuss service, I highly recommend and will return. And take a stroll through the store before you head out... some interesting products offered, everything from cowboy boots, to dried shrimp and tons of spices.

Like other reviewers have stated, this place is not the classiest in decor. I wouldn't take a first date here; but my wife, sure. Who doesn't like eating in a store with a bad depiction of the Last Supper hanging on the wall? I've been here twice and it's pretty good Mexican food, for Florida. I'm from California, so I know real Mexican food. (I've yet to find a decent Carne Asada burrito) The portions are big for the price. Their red sauce has some kick to it. Chips and Salsa were fresh and tasty. Service is ok too. Seating could be an issue if you have more than 5 in your party. I will go back occasionally, but I like to have Tequila with my burritos and this place only has bottled beer. I would say try it out and come to your own conclusion.

This place is absolutely amazing and very authentic. As a few other people have mentioned... when you first walk in you may think you walked into the wrong place.... actually at first my friend and I did walk into the pizza place next store! When you first walk in it looks like an old convenience store. They sell everything from Mexican soda, to food, to clothes, to cowboy boots (which looked very cute). If you are brave enough and not too nervous you continue walking and a familiar sight of tables will be within view. This is a small place, it has two tvs usually playing Mexican soap operas.... about seven-ten tables, and a run down atmosphere. As soon as you sit down you'll be greeted with fresh chips and salsa, always a plus! The menu is in English, and very authentic. We got the nachos as an appetizer and ended up having them for the majority of our meal. The nachos were huge and absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. They come fully loaded with chicken and beef. After munching on our nachos we ordered three sets of tacos: tripa(tripe), lengua(tongue) and chorizo. All three were amazing and not your typical tacos. They come on soft shells, which was also a plus! All in all this place is five stars all the way. If you like Americanized Mexican this isn't the place for you. And if you are into fancy clean restaurants, this also isn't the place for you. The food is delicious, the prices are cheap, and the atmosphere is authentic. Highly recommended. My friend and I have been talking about those nachos for two weeks now and how we cannot wait to make a trip back!

This place has very good mexican food me and my coworkers are from California out here doing a job and all the Florida mexican food places do not compare to what we are use to in downtown Los Angeles but this place tops all local mexican restaurants.

I had the chorizo tacos and they were excellent. The food seems legit but the service was not good. The decor is not and issue..its simply a good food place sharing space with a mini mart type of store. There plenty of "mexican" place to woof down nachos and get drunk. This is not one of them. If you go here you go for the food. This place would be a 5 if it wasnt for the server.

What?? There's a restaurant here??? Passed it 1000 times, never knew. Tried the nachos per Yelp users. AWESOME!! Don't bring your first date here, or there won't be a second!! But do bring your better half an appetite!! Had to stop eating to write this so that I could make room to finish these nachos!!

If you're looking for Americanized Mexican fare in a chic environment this is NOT your place. When I walked in to Las Tapatias for lunch today I almost turned around, certain I had wandered into a convenience store by mistake. Shelves of unfamiliar sodas and spices met my eyes along with, is that clothing? Yes, clothing and CD's and even some sneakers too. OK. Maybe I'll just walk in a little further and see what this place is about. To my left I started seeing familiar sights; tables, chairs, plates of food, waitresses. Phew, maybe this is the place after all. I made my way to an empty table and, at the same time I plopped into a seat, a waitress dropped some hot, fresh tortilla chips and salsa in front of me. Now we're talking! I flipped through the menu, perusing my options and saw many a Mexi favorite. Ultimately, I decided to go with the lunch portion of Chicken Fajitas, which came with rice and beans on the side for around $7. As I waited on my food, I swayed a little with the energetic Latina music videos playing on a TV overhead. In the opposite corner, a muted TV Novela was heating up and I watched that eagerly too, hoping for a little face-slapping with my fajitas. I heard my food before I ever saw it. The sizzles were audible as my waitress approached the table with a piping hot skillet of chicken and veggies, a huge plate of yellow rice and refried beans, and an aluminum foil pocket of warm, doughy tortillas. As the smoke cleared I dug in. The chicken was flavorful and cooked in savory spices and the veggies were hot and juicy. My rice and beans were also cooked masterfully, both having that perfect, and surprisingly hard-to-obtain, al dente texture. I put up a valiant effort, but ultimately boxed up over half of this fajita feast. I got up to pay at the counter and was pleased to have enjoyed such a huge, satisfying meal for under $10. So pleased I almost bought some cloves and a lotto ticket as dessert!

The place is seriously divey in an awesome way. It feels authentic. The meat was dry. Stick to the platters. I'll give it another shot though.

If you're going to let a few bars on the windows/doors keep you away from a delicious Mexican meal... then keep on walking because this isn't the place for you. Our waitress brought us a heaping, hot pile of fresh chips with three salsas. One of my dinner companions, who demands that heat should also have flavor, was particularly complimentary of the salsas. They ordered the Chile Colorado and the Fajitas Jalisco. I opted for the Chile Verde. The food is flavorful, generous portions, and the service efficient. While the food was delicious and exceeded my expectations, it really didn't knock my socks off which is why I'm refraining from giving it 5-starts. My delight in eating here, though, is also in the fact that there are shelves of Latin juices/sodas. Sometimes the Coke/Sprite standby needs to be replaced by an ice-cold bottle of sugary-sweet pineapple soda. On our way out, I ordered a flan to go then picked up a box of mango juice. Overall, a surprisingly delightful dinner and I would make an effort to grab dinner here the next time I have a projectin Jacksonville.

Best authentic Mexican I've had in Jacksonville. Street tacos were fantastic. The dinners were okay, however the rice and beans are so good and fresh! Go for the Chorizo tacos!

Ordered the California w/ carne asada. It was bland with no fries in it. Why would they even call it a California burrito if it didn't have any fries in it beats me. I am from Cali too. It was overpriced for a hole in the wall, paid $8.55 for what is suppose to be a super burrito but it was average size at that. Very disappointed. I m sorry but Cali has way superior mex food. Won't be going back again.

I eat here at least twice a week. Pretty sure this is the best Mexican food in Duval. Hole in the wall spot that attracts everyday consumers of the cuisine & repels the Taco Bell/Nopalera crowd. LOL........Excellent preparation & all around spot on.

Pretty authentic, they have a nice little tienda in there with some groceries you sometimes can't find easily. I ordered the enchilada and one taco lunch special. I didn't love the ranchero sauce that they put on the enchilada. I also got a lengua (tongue) taco, which is my favorite type of taco. The meat was cooked very well but was cut in large cubes and I prefer it sliced thin, but still a good taco. Jo got the chorizo torta; the sandwich was HUGE and the chorizo was seasoned uniquely. Overall, a nice little restaurant for a more authentic feel.

I've had this on my list of places to try for lunch for a long time, and I finally went a couple of days ago. Let me set the stage. The three guys with me all became very nervous as we walked towards the door. I think the bars on the window and pad lock dangling from the front door add to the ambience of the place. When you walk in, all you see at first is a mini mart. The tables are in the back. The server was VERY nice. Chips and salsa were the best I've had at any mexican place in town. I had huevos rancheros for lunch. Any place that puts that on their lunch menu, I have to try. It was pretty good. Everybody else had burritos and enchiladas and everybody enjoyed their food. I really liked this place and will definately go back.

As the other Yelpers have noted this place is muy authentico in every way. Pass up the Tijuana Flats and other chains while trolling the aging shopping center in search of this gem on your GPS and you will be rewarded with delicious Mexican food at a bargain price. You will enter into the bodega section but don't be alarmed or confused, just turn to your left, walk past the shelves of assorted foodstuff and sundries straight from our neighbors to the south and take a seat. A server will arrive at your table within seconds offering a menu and chips and salsa. After ordering gaze up at the TVs to be entertained by Mexican soap operas or beauty pageants/talent shows. I had the (enormous) taco and enchilada combo dinner: one chicken enchilada, one beef (al pastor style, not ground, which was a nice surprise), and a fantastic chorizo taco (minced style, not sliced). You can also wash down your meal with a cold beer, which will be pulled straight from the cooler where other patrons have picked up six packs to go. If you make a little effort to find this place and enjoy real Mexican food in an unpolished dining environment, then head down to Las Tapatias pronto.

So I wrote a quick checkin note about being here at Las Tapatias. I had their menudo. I must say....I'm impressed. Being born and raised in San Diego made me a bit critical and picky on mexican food from other states/cities. I will definitely come back again and again. Just a fair warning that this is a whole in the wall "Welcome to Salinas" kind of place....but the food is as authentic as you can get.

OK, Jacksonville is a wasteland for real Mexican food, but this is your best bet that I have found. It's not the best Mexican I have ever had by far, but it's the best we got. They have some good street style tacos including Lengua, Cabeza, and Pastor. A food package store with some commerical mexican groceries. It would probably be considered a dive and more of a lunch place. Try it out!

This is the only Mexican restaurant that I know off in the area that serves authentic tacos. For $2 each, they are fantastic anyway you like them. They are served on a soft shell with onions, cilantro, and lime. We usually eat them with carnitas or carne asada. You have to try their Salsa Verde and Red salsa they keep in the refrigerator. I know you walk into the place and it might look like just the store but if you keep walking left, there about eight tables and full kitchen. If you want authentic Mexican, stay off the gringo menu. Also, take a look at their specials board.

Last week, craving Mexican food one night, hubby and I decided to try this place out. It is, afterall, very close to where we live, but for some reason, we just have never thought to try this place. When we walked in, we thought we were at the wrong place. We saw a little Mexican grocery store. But as I look to my left, I tugged my hubby's sleeve and said, "eh, I think there is the 'restaurant' part." It was early evening when we went and there was only 1 table, about to leave. So we sat down, next to the aisle with sneakers and sodas. The lady was very friendly and brought us the menu and took our drink orders. We both ordered diet coke... she came back and said they only have one can left lol... so we got a glass of water and shared the lone can of diet coke. I ordered from the lunch menu (she said we could, just add $1), a burrito dish. Hubby ordered their mega fajita from their dinner menu which included various types of meats and veggies. They were both very tasty and very reasonable in price. I also love the salsa & chips they served us. Another funny thing, as soon as we placed the order, the lady came back with two sauces, one red and one green. Having no clue what they were, I pointed to the green one and asked humbly, "what kind of sauce is this?" "It's hot sauce," the lady replied. "Cool, so what is that one?" as I pointed at the red sauce. A pause... "hotter sauce," she said. We tried both sauces... to be honest, I couldn't tell much difference. Maybe it's because I have so many different things/sauces going on lol... the food was good and hearty and the bill didn't break the bank... good enough for me!

Finally after trying just about every Mexican place in Jacksonville, I have found the most authentic in the area. It is located inside a small Mexican shop in the way back with a couple of tables. It is family owned and their English is very limited. The food is amazing and homemade. I love the verde cheese enchiladas with beans. The price is just right for a good amount of food with incredible Mexican taste.

Amazing food. Dont be alarmed when you walk in! The foods is amazing. I looove the tacos! The have a lot of different options and each taco is freshly made. It is true what they say- some of the worst looking mexican food places server the BEST food. Highly Recomend. (Might help if you speak spanish- However, they do speak english)

I'm sitting here torn on how to review this establishment. As stated before, there are bars on the door and a giant 1" BBB chain and master lock that looks to serve as a wind chime and crime deterrent. As previously mentioned, this is a half market, half restaurant. My wife and I seated ourselves and were relatively quickly greeted with menus. From here, the service severely lacked, and I don't know that I can even call it service. In fact, we were only checked in on once, and it took an inordinate amount of time to both get our food and to get our check considering the lack of clientele in there. My water glass was eventually refilled, but only after asking. The saving grace is the food. It is exactly what I was getting along border towns across the southwest. I opted for the tacos, which come with the traditional cilantro and onion. My wife had the combo No.1, which was enchiladas with rice and beans, and a beef taco. The food was phenomenal. The problem I had was the service. I really don't want to elude to racism, but a group of men that came in just about 20 minutes after us had there food a heck of a lot quicker than ours, and clearly they were receiving better service. Food wise, easily worth it and I would recommend them. Service-wise, I'm honestly torn. 4 stars on the food (easy 4, borderline 5). The service was about a 1. A three is what I'm rating this place due to the bad service and questionable service. I really hope we were being ignored for another reason.

Really nice alternative to the other Mexican places in town. Most of them have the same menu and all taste exactly the same, but this place is definitely an outlier. I have never been to Mexico but I'd imagine this is a lot more authentic experience than anywhere else in town. The food is wonderful and tastes completely different than the other competitors nearby. I especially like their California burrito that is served with two refrigerated sauces. One is a salsa verde and the other is a red sauce I've never encountered in a Mexican restaurant. It tastes more like a sweet garlic paste sauce much like the sauce I encountered in Korea used for Bi Bim Bap. Definitely plenty of food to take half of it home and eat it for dinner. I feel oddly comfortable in this place because it lacks the noise and clutter of the endless theme restaurants in Jacksonville. I've eaten there three times this week because it is so tasty. Not a date night venue, but if you just want to grab some lunch that tastes great and costs very little with zero fuss or trying-too-hard servers, this is a great place.

Ok, here's the thing...I've been here 3 times and I liked it each time. I thought, "Hey, this is a good spot. Pretty authentic Mexican food." Then after, I went back to Cali for a visit and had dinner at El Metate...OMG, I had forgotten what good Mexican food is supposed to be like. Tapatia is ok. I've had tacos, tortas, enchiladas and burritos there and they are all pretty good. Everything I've had has been carne asada. It's not top quality beef, but it's marinated fairly well...perhaps needing a bit more lime and pepper. Kathy T is right, it's probably the best Jax has...although I really like Mr. Taco too. Actually, if I had to choose, it'd be Mr. Taco. But anyway, for Jax, it's pretty good. It's way better than La Nopalera. She's also right in that alot of Mexicans eat there too, which does speak to the authenticity. I daresay that I've never seen a Mexican at Cantina Laredo. It's a quaint place...they have a little grocery too that you can buy stuff to make at home. I've bought some things before like spices and the like because it's way cheaper to get them there than at Publix. Oh, and the service is cool, cuz I love to order in Spanish and see the look on their face when this chino busts out espanol all over them. I think they like it.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Happen to be in the area again, and it was just as delicious as when I first came in 2012.

This place has very good mexican food me and my coworkers are from California out here doing a job and all the Florida mexican food places do not compare to what we are use to in downtown Los Angeles but this place tops all local mexican restaurants.

Best Mexican food in town, I highly recommend this place. Tacos is a must and the chili was perfect. Mexican atmosphere and great service. Authentic Mexican food.
(5)Al N.

(5)Pete S.

(5)Chelsea S.

Try it out!
(4)Matias H.
