In town for a few days of diving and a friend who lives in Hollywood recommend The Black Bean Cafe over the chain restaurant Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine. Not a fancy space but the friendly service and delicious food are worth stopping in for a bite. I ordered their oxtail, black beans, plantains, and rice. The oxtail meat was full of flavor and fell off the bone with little effort from me. The black beans are seasoned so well that the 3 yr old in our party finished an entire bowl. Another in the party raved about his liver and onion entree while his wife enjoyed the lemon chicken entree. Portion sizes are generous so expect leftovers. Worth return visits next time I am in the area.

We love this little place. It has decent Cuban food and it's very reasonably priced. For years we have pretty much ordered take out as we lived very close to here. Over the last couple years, we haven't been back...not for any reason, just one of those things. I was looking through Yelp and it reminded me how much we loved this place. I was thinking I miss that place, and I noticed something I didn't realize before. They serve breakfast. I kept that in the back of my mind for future reference, and sure enough, one morning on the way home from a medical procedure, I was HUNGRY.I wanted breakfast and I wanted a change of pace from our usual spot. Then I remembered that Black Beans Cafe serves breakfast. YES! Hubby wasn't too enthusiastic, but he went along with it...he's good that way! We went in and seated ourselves. I was thinking that this was the first time we actually went in to eat inside the restaurant. It was pretty cool inside. The outside of the place gives the impression that there isn't much going on inside. However, the place was pretty nice once we were in the restaurant. It was bright and welcoming and we were greeted with friendly smiles. Why didn't we come here sooner? Hubby's enthusiasm increased when he saw steak and eggs on the menu. I saw the french toast, and knew was I was getting. Oh yes! We both loved our meals, and we had a nice relaxing visit. I noticed a steady stream of regulars coming in. Some were grabbing their usual Cuban coffee to go. Others were sitting in their favorite spot ordering their usual breakfast. My only complaint on the place is that the service was slow. It wasn't ridiculously slow, but our regular spot gets us in and out FAST. So we had to adjust our normal routine, and just relax. Imagine that! If you're in the mood for Cuban food, you could do a lot worse than this place. Our favorite is the Picadillo! It's really yummy! If you are in the mood for a delicious and relaxing breakfast, I highly recommend Black Beans Cafe!

Cheap lunch special $6.95 for an CUBAN entree of the day, come with brown or white rice/beans/plantains (substitutable with fries!) and a side of garlic bread. Service: great and friendly service, food comes almost right away! Lots of locals eat here, may be crowded during lunch hours. Food: very big portion, prepared to share! Beef stew with carrots and potatoes - a lil salty but it allows you to down it with your rice! Almost taste like curry beef but not as intense as indian or thai curry, pretty blend even though it has lots of spices in it. Pepper beef with bell pepper and onions - taste almost like flank steak stir fried from chinese restaurant, nothing special but still tasty! Price: very decent and reasonably cheap! Parking: small lot with about 12-15 spots Lunch special is a steal, great price, great portion, and great taste!

Service - 5 stars Cleanliness - 5 stars Food quality - 5 stars Food deliciousness - 5 +++ stars We had the papa relleno (Beef stuffed potato) and platano fritas with mojo sauce (fried green plantains). The papa was the best I've ever had. I've had plenty!! Hubby had the Steak Milanese, I had the Chicken Milanese. I asked for no ham on my chicken. Both meats were tender and juicy inside the breading. Both had crunch on the sides of the Milanese which happens to be my favorite part of Milanese. Both entrees comes with rice which was fluffy and perfectly cooked, black beans that is beautiful seasoned & maduros (sweet plantains). It's a lot of food. I have enough for lunch tomorrow. We ended our meal with a delicious colada, of course. YUM!!! This was a perfect place to stop for a delicious Cuban lunch after arriving from our week long cruise. It's only 11 miles from Port Everglades. Don't let the storefront's appearance put you off. In this case, the curb appeal hardly represents the wonderful dining experience inside. We will certainly be back!!!!

This place is awesome- great food and great service. I had the grilled grouper. It was Friday's special. It came with plantain, bread and of course, beans and rice. Everything was cooked to perfection and the fish was lightly seasoned. There was fresh lime to add and I had a cuban espresso. Perfect! Parking is a bit tricky and the entire time I was there, the place was filled. It was lunch time so, get there early!

This dainty restaurant might not look like much from the outside but it's a good place to indulge in some Cuban food. I love that this place is pretty cheap- you can get a full meal and dine in without worrying about spending too much. They have great lunch specials too. I ordered the grouper special with rice, beans, and boiled yuca- the grouper was cooked perfectly and was a pretty decent size fillet.

El Guero esta...just had to say I liked this place before, but the recent upgrades of new carpet, fresh paint, and new tables and chairs add a lot of sizzle to a delicious steak. They will fill you up without emptying your wallet.

If you're looking for authentic Cuban in Hollywood, this is your place! Although it competes with Las Vegas, a chain Cuban joint just down a few blocks, it holds its own. I have yet to visit Las Vegas Cuban cuisine due to being so pleased with The Black Bean cafe! I've tried the carne asada and the palomilla steak, both delicious with rice and beans. The lunch specials are usually really good and cheap, only 5 bucks for a nice sized meal. The home-cooked delicious food will speak for itself!

I drive by this road a lot and I never really noticed it until I found this place on Yelp! Even when I got the street address it was still not easy to find, giving its located in a small building with not a large visible sign on the street. But it's a good thing I found it because we were very happy about our dining experience last weekend. We love visiting mom and pop shop and supporting local business. And this is one of the places we'd love to come back over and over again. Inside the dining area might be tiny, but you feel its unique warmth and charm. Before I ordered anything, I loved the Cuban bread they served us. It was nice, warm and toasty. Menu items are relatively simple. You'll find most common Cuban dishes in their menu. For my entrée I ordered the Palomilla steak, which is marinated Cuban style topped with sautéed onions. The beef was cooked very nice and tender. The grilled sautéed onions went well with the beef. I also asked for some Chimichurri on the side which brought the dish to another flavor profile. My wife ordered the Grilled Pork Chops. I took one bite and it was nicely cooked too. And I ended the meal with café con leche...of course. Yes, no more room for deserts. One thing I haven't mentioned was their service. Our waitress was very friendly and took pretty good care of us. I guess one of the reasons why I live visiting small mom and pop restaurants is because they often provide you with personal attention service. Along with providing good tasting food I am sure place like this can do very well for a very long time.

Sean M introduced me to Black Beans Café when I first moved to the area. I've come here a couple of times and really enjoyed their lunch specials. It is a small place located on Highway 441. It fits the perfect "little hole in the wall" description. It's so easy to miss, yet once you are here you'll be glad that you discovered it. For a very reasonable price you can dine on a full meal that includes rice, beans, plantains, and freshly toasted garlic Cuban bread. The service is friendly and efficient. There is enough parking outside of the restaurant as well. Stop by here for a quick respite from your busy work day. You will be glad you did.

It's not easy finding solid Cuban food in the Broward area! So close to Miami, yet so far...... I was very pleased with Black Beans Cafe. It is in an unassuming place off 441, you could pass by it every day and not even notice it. Easy parking and the inside is modest, very clean. Servers were quick and efficient. I have one minimum requirement when eating at Cuban establishments. How's their fresh pressed bread?!? Definitely my favorite part and it hit the spot while waiting for the entrees. They also have great lunch specials every day. Of course, their namesake, the black beans, were perfect! I enjoyed the plantains as well. My husband loved their media noche sandwich. It comes with fries, but it adds no real value, definitely frozen. Wish they would offer a different choice like plantain chips or rice/beans. Overall, very happy and if in the neighborhood again, I would surely go again!

This place is easily passed by as its tucked back off 441. I'm still looking for that sign thats in the pictures. In any case, and what really matters is the food and service. Or service and then food. I'm big on service, being the southern country girl that I am. The setting, 1 big group (approx. 10) in the center of the restaurant, 2 servers whom look like They were ready to go home. They were not rude, but neither were They warm and inviting. The food, good flavor, although the grilled chicken didn't appear as though it was grilled accordingly on the other side. I didn't eat all of it after I turned the chicken over. I would, however try Black Bean again, I just think I caught them at a bad time. The fresh squeezed lemonade, and the cafe con leche, simply perfection.

Really delicious home cooked food. Thanks to Sean M recommendation staying it's his new fav spot to eat I had to try it out. It's down 441 south of Washington. And thanks to yelp photos I knew what the storefront looked like. Yes, I was slightly scared getting out of my car I've never been in this 'hood before. I saw customers walking out with huge smiles and their To-go boxes and bags bundled in their hands. The inside was warm and cute with fresh single red roses on all the tables. And a bar with a fresh orange juicer. I got here Just before the lunch specials were over. There are different lunch specials set for the days of the week. They also serve breakfasts starting at 8am. The waitress a pretty girl named Priscilla took my To-Go order and checked to time a couple times to make sure it was before 4pm. I came after the lunch rush so it was empty there, one customer who chatted a bit telling me what's good here. He strongly recommended chicken dishes as South America uses chicken in many ways. He also told me this place USED to be owned by Cubans, but was sold to a family from Ecuador. I wonder if the food is Ecuadorian? Or Cuban? I ordered the grilled Grouper Special with black beans, Sweet Plantains, and rice to feed South America serious a lot of rice! - The nice fillet of Grouper wasn't oily at all just nicely cooked, seasoned well and came with a lime wedge. -The plantains came 3 pieces, wish there were more, they were perfect. - I loved my meal and yes I had leftover rice for tomorrow. This rice is buttery and sticks together- similar but different than sushi rice. I ordered the Carne Asada Lunch Special for my man. I asked for the steak to be medium rare. I ordered rice and black beans, and cooked Yucca. -The steak had good flavor and wasn't as chewy as I thought it would be. -There wad a spicy 'salsa' with it: chopped tomatoes, onions, lots of black pepper, jalapeno, and a lime wedge. -The chimichurri sauce was creamy green very flavorful and one of the best I've had. -Black Beans are well seasoned, and not mushy at all -not overcooked, the beans hold their shape I can see why some Yelpers write 'addictive' - Rice again more rice than the other meal! I really never saw a place that piles the rice in the to go box and forces the lid down from the sheer mountain piled- high of rice..I think you get the picture now ;) - Yucca : I've tried fried yucca before and asked which is better. Priscilla said "both are good". So I tried the boiled Yucca and it has a lemony sauce, sauteed onions really delicious, similar to a potato, just denser. Okay yes Five stars! I am now inspired to find other Mom and Pop home cuisine from other countries. Not only is it amazing value for tons of food, but it's also quite nutritious and healthier(depending on your choices ie.baked & grilled over Fried), not to mention flavor town hitting your mouth and asking for more! The service was friendly and quick I got my full order to-go in 15 minutes. And they gave me the warm sliced Cuban bread with garlic butter complimentary with my order, I didn't expect that and it was a nice touch. Most times if you don't dine in, you don't get bread or garlic rolls.. Okay want to guess how much all this yummy food cost me$$$$$$???!!! With TAX ~How about 17.21$!!!!!! Yes the price of what we pay to eat 1 Meal is equal to a Full dinner for two-Hungry-Eaters with left overs. Thanks again Sean M !! Sending good vibes to you ~~ I will be back at Black Beans really soon.

I've driven past this place countless times... Finally giving it a try. Black Bean Cafe is right off of a main road with limited parking out front, but more around the side. It definitely has a dates family-run restaurant feel, but very clean and tidy. It's World Cup season, so everyone was tuned into the TV... Normally this is a pet-peeve of mine, but the World Cup is a good exception. The food... I ordered one of my favorites: Masas de Puerco with black beans, rice, and sweet plantains. Overall, the food was good. I tend to judge cuban restaurants on a staple: black beans and rice. Theirs was good. Rice was fluffy and beans tasty - but nothing out of this world. Don't get me wrong, they were tasty, just not amazing. The Masas de Puerco (fried pork chunks... for the no hablo español-ers out there) was GREAT. Slight crunch on the outside, fork-tender and juicy on the inside. Added a squirt of lime for some zing and enjoyed every last chunk. I finished off my meal with some Cuban coffee. An absolute perfect way to end my lunch. Black Bean Cafe is a great place for a quick cuban meal. I probably wouldn't drive out of my way to dine here (only because one of my favorite cuban restaurants is closer to my home), but definitely worth a try! Oh, almost forgot... The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. High five to them !

Definitely excellent food, service very poor, except Patricia very professional, other waitress are very rude, the one who claim to be the owner wife is the worst one she need to be better educated how to dealing with the customers.

You probably drove by this place a few times, not realizing what good Cuban food lies ahead. There's barely parking spots in the front but there's more behind the building. The waitresses are always friendly and attentive. I order pretty much the same entree every time - Pollo a la Plancha con tostones y ensalada (boneless chicken breast with friend plantains and salad). Depending on my mood, I may switch from their tostones for rice and beans. Despite the name of this restaurant, I actually love their RED beans more! I've also come here for their breakfast. Tried their pancakes, not impressed. I do enjoy their egg omelet with sweet plantains - the only thing I order now for breakfast. Their fresh squeezed OJ is nice. Cafe con leche is also prepared good. The length of time to pay has only been lengthy during breakfast time. That appears to be their busiest point of their day. But I can forgive that because of their consistence in the quality of their food & friendly staff.

The best mamey smoothie w/double muffler, and the friendliness waitress. I ordered the ropa vieja/ Shredded beef, Congri/ mixed rice and beans & sweet plantains, everything was fresh and piping hot, I highly recommend it.

My nephew 26 yr old wanted me to meet him for lunch so I gave in and let him pick the restaurant. Step inside its C L E A N & comfortable. We we served in a pleasant timely manner, with a geniune smile. I ordered one of the Fri. lunch specials for $6.95 the Roast Pork was served with black beans & rice + plantain no options. The server was pleasant with a genuine smile our food was timely. I would visit again if I was in the area

I would have never found this place or thought to have stepped in it of it weren't for Yelp. The service was excellent though it could have been faster but it only looked like they had 2 girls on staff and 1 was on her break. The $7.50 half pitcher of Sangria is a real thing! And it was regular dinner hours! Though, I don't think there was much alcohol in it- if any at all, but it tasted delicious. The food was great, we ordered the churrasca and the grilled pork chops, along with the boiled yuca. We devoured everything on our plates. I'm really happy I made the decision to come here instead of La Carreta again. It was something different and it was definitely a pleasant surprise!

I've been going here every since I lived in Hollywood almost 12 years ago. I moved to Boca 6 years ago but still come here to visit family and always go here for the best Cuban food. The ladies are always so nice and fast service and they have the best beef empanadas !! Always made fresh to order. I highly recommend this great place to anyone doesn't look like much on the outside but inside was redone and food remains delicious ...

  • Cherie M.

It's not pretty on the outside, but nice and clean on the inside. The servers are friendly, and helpful. The plantain chips were perfect- light and crispy, with a garlic citrus sauce. The cafe Cubano was strong and sweet. Highly recommend this cute place.

This is the 4th time in 2 weeks we've visited Black Bean Café. The service and food is phenomenal, if I had to nick pick at something it would be the decor...but that's stretching it. If your not paying attention you will drive right past this place, as it's tucked away inside the hustle of 441. Stop in and give them a try I'm confident you'll be please.

My family loves this place. It's small but the staff and food are great! We usually come here on Sunday's after church and the food is always great. We usually get the Vaca Frita. My mother-in-law has severe allergies and the staff does a great job accommodating her.

4 in for dinner on a Thursday at 6:30. Not very busy. Had to ask for hot bread. 1/2 pitcher of Sangria 7.50 -- Too sweet, not much wine flavor. Skirt Steak with beans and rice and sweet plantains 13.95 -- very good. Roast Pork with beans and rice and sweet plantains 8.95 -- Good but a small portion of pork compared to other restaurants. Shrimp in garlic sauce with beans and rice and sweet plantains 12.95 -- Good but needed more shrimp for the price. Overall, a good place to eat and the service was good. As others have said, this restaurant looks better from the inside than the outside. We will go back.

Found this little place from yelpers. I have been driving by this place for years, but it never crossed my mind of stopping in. Very friendly people with good customer service work here, they greet you with a hi when you walk in, and a bye when you leave. I believe it is family owned and managed. The prices are very reasonable, you can find incredibly cheap daily lunch specials from 11 am - 3 pm. The interior is modest and very clean, and they have a good choice of drinks from sodas, beer to freshly squeezed orange juice. The menu is not that large but it is not small either, it is just the right size to avoid a " menu headache". I ordered what I always have at Cuban restaurants chicken steak with black beans white rice $7.50 bit.ly/15rl18v , I also tried their small fish soup, not sure about the price I cannot remember $3.50 bit.ly/15rlPu1 . They also offer toasted bread also at no extra charge while you are waiting. The chicken steak was tender and juicy and perfectly salted, it went excellent with the onions. The fish soup surprised me, I was not expecting such a hearty delicious soup bobbling with large portions of grouper. The soup actually had rice in it, which it is a first for me, the rice made the soup more like a meal. I am definitely going to make this one of my lunch time stops.....UPDATE..... I love this place i am changing from a 4 star to a 5 star rating.

Prices are reasonable but service is lacking to say the least every time I order coffee and Orange juice after breakfast they complaint and make a big fuzz, last time there were 3 people sitting and I was completely ignored until I finally spoke, she said they were busy LOL busy 3 people. I really wanted to keep coming but I won't patronized this type of attitude UPDATE 05/10/2015 Finally they have changed their attitude some it's better now.

Disappointed! I was excited to try this due to the great reviews. Granted we came in a few minutes past morning breakfast, but they allowed us to order(greatly appreciated). The food was decent but the service was horrible. Not a welcoming place. Our waitress spoke perfect English & seemed to be very annoyed with us. If it wasn't for my kids being very hungry, my husband and I would've walked out. We(my husband & I) are from Miami so we a very familiar with cuban cuisine. We enjoy finding good food in BROWARD so we wouldn't have to travel all the way to Miami-Dade. We may give this place another try if we are ever in the hollywood area. Hoping for a different server/service.

Was in the area and a few people recommended to try this place. Ended up doing takeout and ordered 3 sandwiches black beans and rice and a Cuban coffee all for around $20. Can't beat that. Was really surprised by how great the chicken sandwich tasted and the portion is huge! Going to be stopping in here quite a bit more often now.

Visited this restaurant for the first time today and I must say I was glad I did. Although it's not the best of locations and it is a small establishment, I enjoyed the food. I ordered the bistec de pollo and the meat is soft and juicy. Also, I ordered a batista de mango (mango shake) which I must say isn't bad but not great either. If you're looking for a Latin eatery without crowds and helpful to your pocket; Give "The black beans café" a try I did :)

Ok, my fellow yelp junkie friend has been telling how he loves this lunch spot, so finally today we checked out together. I'm not a Cuban food fanatic because I'm Cuban and my son loves the carreta cuban restaurant so I'm forced to eat it all the time lol. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall is my honest opinion, but inside its very clean which you won't expect and the restroom is immaculate! The staff is super nice, friendly and efficient. The menu prices are great, very affordable and they have about 4-5 different lunch special daily from 11am-4pm. I ordered a chicken steak with rice, beans and tostones (fried green plantains). Immediately noticed the large portions ( specially for a lunch special) Loved the food , chicken was perfectly cooked and came with cooked onions on top, the beans had a nice homecooked taste to them different than a lot a of Cuban restaurants. My only disappointment was the tostones, they were not nice and salty and crunchy. I think they were made with yellow plantain instead and frankly i didn't care for them at all. My friend ordered with sweet plantains and i didn't try them but they looked awesome. All in all i will go back again, if they make up for the tostones I will update to 5 stars lol.

Ok. The food is solid. But it's basically straight forward Cuban. The place is clean. The service is friendly and the price is right. I enjoyed my dinner...just wasn't wowed by anything. I had the pallomilla steak and my wife had the chicken. Both good. We had an avocado salad that was lettuce and avocados. If you are looking for a good simple meal. It's great.

Easily one of the best Cuban places I've had the pleasure of dining at. I went with two friends and we actually all ordered the biste de pollo. The chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly. You can't go wrong with beans and rice, and the sweet plantains were perfect. I didn't like the whipped cream on the tres leches, but that is just personal preference! We were greeted quickly and had our food very quickly too. We will definitely be returning.

This place was down the block from the Airbnb location I stayed at, and the cheap breakfast and cafe con leche was delicious. The roasted potatoes are so good, crispy on the outside and very hot when it comes out. If I stayed here longer I'd come here every morning for coffee. Good service too.

For me this is a Primary Lunch Stop when I'm in the area. It looks like a hole in the wall from outside but inside it's spotless and the food is just out of this world. Home cooked Cuban Food at it's best. The problem with Cuban Restaurant's is that most places have other than Cubans cooking in the kitchen. This place is 110% Cuban Food made by actual Cubans. And the help is extremely pleasant to deal with. This was a good find. Try them out and you too will agree !!!!

  • Wanda Z.

I am a fan! This is real Cuban food. I didn't feel I was eating at a restaurant, I was eating at a Cuban grandmothers house. I had the lechon asado. One word- divine. The black beans were very very good. My husband had the seafood soup. It was also extremely delicious. Even the garlic bread that they bring you before your order comes, fagetaboutit. I will be coming back here whenever I come to the area. For sure. Also, bathrooms were immaculate. Big plus.

This little place blew me away! Some of the best cuban food I have ever had. And it is very appropriately price perhaps on the side of cheap. Highly recommend!

Wasn't terrible but not that impressive. Coffee wasn't as good as some and the food was so hot I can only assume it was fresh out of a microwave. Pretty cheap and nice service though.

I have been going to Black Beans cafe for a few years. I have to say that their food is delicious, the reason why I gave 3 stars is because of the lousy service provided. It is a small restaurant with about 4 to 5 waitresses .. Only 2 are pleasant the other 3 are unprofessional working with attitudes. Overall, the food is delicious and reasonably priced.

Thanks to Yelp, I ate here for the first time the other day. I was getting my truck serviced nearby and looking to eat lunch in the area and wanted to try something new. I check Yelp and so the reviews, so thought it was worth a try. I have probably driven by this place 100s of times of the years and never thought to try it out...never really noticed it, bu thanks to Yelp, I discovered a great place. As other reviews have said...not much from the outside, but clean inside. The waitress was very nice; great service. The menu had good variety and definitely check out the lunch specials on the back of the menu. They have different specials every day and a good selection of specials. The prices are reasonable, the portions are great, the food tastes good and I like supporting family owned / small businesses, so I can't see any reason not to start eating here more often. I've already told a couple of people about this place (since not everyone checks Yelp...but they should!)

I live in Miami. There is a restaurant like this on practically every corner. With that being said, I went to have dinner with my uncles and an aunt in Hollywood. One of my uncles lives in South Carolina (by way of NYC). He likes his latin food... My local uncle recommended the Black Bean Cafe. I wasn't thrilled because to be quite honest, Cuban food bores me. Not that it isn't good. It is. I like it. A lot. I'm just bored. It's like the days when you were too poor to afford anything but ham & cheese sandwiches or McDonalds Dollar Menu. After a while, your gag reflex kicks in when you see those golden arches or smell ham wafting in your direction. But it's actually been a while since I've had Cuban fare... Off we went. It's a tiny cafeteria style restaurant. It's got a few tables & booths. Definitely has a family-owned feel. No frills. Usually, this means the food should be good. I ordered the Churrasco medium rare with a side of chimichurri. (Can't go wrong with a nice steak, right?) The steak came perfectly cooked. Juicy & delicious! It came with white rice, *Surprise!* black beans and maduros. The cuban staples. They did not disappoint. My local uncle ordered the Bistec a la Milanesa with the same sides. (It's Cuban food here, people. Not a whole lot of variety.) My aunt had the exact same thing. My other uncle ordered the Ropa Vieja. He cracked up. He called it the "Old Clothes" which, for those of you that don't know, is the literal translation for this dish. We are Puerto Rican and although my uncle & I have been living in South Florida long enough to be accustomed to the names of Cuban dishes, Uncle Raymond was clueless and amused. He enjoyed his dish (also with the same sides). We were much too stuffed after this meal to even consider dessert. But all in all, the Black Bean is A-OK in my book! Tacked on an extra star because the waitress was really sweet and attentive. No complaint here!
