Home-style cooking and fair prices. We came for lunch and the line was crazy, but the food was worth the wait.

If you're expecting great service and luxurious dining, don't even step in here. In the center of Hialeah, gated parking, and outdoor parking. It's very similar to a Palacio de los Jugos but 500 times more clean. You order over the counter and the good thing is that you can see the food right there in front of you. They're obviously known for their corn as the name of the restaurant says. We were looking forward to trying tamales but they had ran out for the day! So we got a corn on the cob and frituras de maiz. I didn't really like the sweet ones very much, but the salted ones were great! Inside you order the rice, meat, fish. chicken, etc. Outside you order the corn on the cob. Takes a few minutes so I suggest you order the corn outside first and then go inside and get the food since it is already prepared. The portions they serve are pretty big, great for sharing. I got the pork meat which was ok, I've had better. Congris and maduros. The congris was great, with tiny pieces of chicharron inside! Yumm! (Beware: you can only understand this review if you speak Spanglish) My husband had Atole, which is kind of like a pudding made of corn. Not my cup of tea but he says it was delicious! The corn on the cob was very good. If you order ONE corn it's TWO small pieces. So make sure you have that in mind! Otherwise what you think is 2 corns, turns out to be 4! Now, as to why I didn't give this place 5 stars, even though I thought about it for a minute or two. I personally thought that the women who were serving were a little bit rude. We went with 2 friends, they were ordering their food with someone and so I ask one of the ladies if she could please help me. She tells me, you're already being helped. So I say "No I'm not, my friends are being helped and it's a separate order." So another server stepped in and said "I will help you don't worry." I mean, the place is empty, so you obviously don't feel like working!! I just really can't stand bad service. Anyway, I will definitely come back very soon. Food is great and cheap! A fantastic combination! :)

I give it 3 start for the following reasons' .La champola de guanabana was super sour, but in general we were very happy .the grill outside is a most.grill red peppers(nice chart and sweet),morcilla and chorizo to die for, and dont miss the pork ribs.do not eat inside the food is ok ,but not good, atole is an ithen that you should try(sweet puree of corn).service is ok for these type of place.the decoration is nice, but to many flies.

Casa Maiz is basically a smaller version of the famed and ubiquitous Miami chain Palacio De los Jugos. They offer "completas" which consists of a protein and two sides (I.e Vaca frita, rice, plantains). Being that the restaurant is in Hialeah there is generally a great amount of disorder inside so arrive with patience because you are going to need it. If you can brave a true Latin American experience head to the terrace to order grilled meats. The pan con churrasco is hearty and delicious and it's only $6.99.

This is a food by the pound type place but cleaner and with a much better quality of food. The best part is the outdoor grill. The selection, freshness, quality and price cannot be beat. Vegetables and different cuts of meat are grilled to order. Besides the food, the service is fantastic. This place is on our regular places to lunch at.

This restaurant is another Food by the Pound Cuban Restaurant but, with an unique modern twist. Everything is more modern than what we are accustomed to from these types of restaurants. They even have a very large grill outside where I was told they cook many of their meals. It's part of the kitchen but open to the outside. More indoor and outdoor seating than what we are accustomed to also. So, you're probably asking yourselves; "What the Hell is food by the pound?" It is a very simple concept made popular here in Miami in the 80s by another, now downsized, restaurant. Let's say you don't feel like cooking rice one evening, you come here and order the portion you need. It is weighed and that's what you pay. Same thing goes for anything else you may need, e.g., soup, chicken, pork or whatever they sell. This is perfect for parties where it is appropriate to take "something" without the hassle of having to cook. These types of restaurants, for the most part, also have an option to dine there. You order a meal named a "Completa" (Complete) which consists of one meat and two starches. If you order chicken you can get it with your choice of rice and maybe Maduros (sweet fried plantains) and so on. Or, any combination thereof. Again, a very simple concept. Now that the history lesson is out of the way, a bit about this restaurant. It is very large with ample choices for food. When you walk-in, it's a bit confusing. There is no indication anywhere of where you start ordering. Basically, stand anywhere around the food being displayed and someone will ask you if you're ready to order. This is one of the reasons I didn't issue them a fifth star. I knew this but, someone that has never been to one of these restaurants wouldn't. The other, their business hours are nowhere to be found. Not even on their menu. Because "corn" is in their name (maiz,) I decided to order most of my dishes based on corn. Lookie here, they did not disappoint. To see exactly what I ordered, refer to the picture of the receipt I uploaded. The pork and Moros I ate there. Everything else, I brought home. Mother and I are still raving about their food. As of today, this restaurant is at the top of places to eat Moros and pork in Hialeah. Something any Cuban Restaurant should be reviewed on. Tomorrow, I will be here early to try their breakfast. Things to note and blah, blah, blahs: * Except for a small amount of items, everything is homemade. * They sell homemade half gallon juices to bring home. This seems to be gaining popularity at restaurants in Hialeah. * Food displayed doesn't last. I arrived here at 10:30 a.m. and people were already lining-up. I don't blame them, this stuff is delicious. * Parking is of plenty here. If for any reason their lot is full, follow the signs and park at the now closed Denny's next door. * Mother and I are still raving about their Guiso de Maíz (Corn Stew) and Tamales. * Not all the food being served is Cuban. Some Latin American favorites are available as well. This "may" vary by day. For the most part, it's Cuban Food. * Language here is Español with very minimal English if you ask. Welcome to today's Hialeah, eh?

This place isn't too far from my office and therefore I've passed it many times, but never really thought to give it a chance. This week we decided to check it out, with the name being Casa Maiz we were hoping for perhaps Central American cuisine, but it turns out it is pretty standard Cuban food by the pound. Chicken Breast Meal/Pechuga Pollo Completa ($7.99) - Comes with a grilled, butterflied chicken breast and two sides. I chose calabaza/squash and maduros/sweet plantains. The calabaza wasn't seasoned, just boiled, which was disappointing. The chicken breast was good, standard mojo and lime seasoning and the maduros were also good. Tamal ($2.00) - It was good, but standard for just about any other food by the pound place. Maybe it was an off day, but it just didn't have much flavor. I was hoping that with the name of the restaurant being Casa Maiz, that their tamales would be really good. Shredded Beef Meal/Ropa Vieja Completa ($8.99) - Ropa vieja (shredded beef simmered in a tomato based sauce) with two sides. He chose tostones/green plantains and moros/rice with beans mixed together. Again everything was good, but nothing out of the ordinary from any other standard food by the pound restaurant. Sugar Cane Juice/Guarapo ($2.99) - Very good, standard for most places of this kind. Overall this is a solid place if you are in the mood for standard Cuban food by the pound, but I didn't find anything that stood out to make this restaurant special. Service was acceptable, not overly friendly and not bad. We came for lunch at about 12.30 on a Monday and it was busy, but not too crowded. There are only a few tables inside and several outdoors, but it's quite hot so better as a take out place. I noticed a grill outdoors as well and assume they have grilled meats on the weekends.

I'm not a fan of Cuban food. El Palacio De Los Jugos soured me on a lot of it, honestly. Smaller portions, higher prices, and just all around poor, greasy, bland tasting foods there. A friend of the family suggested we go to Casa Maiz and I nearly declined when he told me it was a Cuban style restaurant. I'm glad I let him talk me into it. Where El Palacio looks like a garbage facility, Casa Maiz is clean. Everything is new, modern, painted well, things aren't falling apart, looks like it was built in this century--you get the idea. The building is smaller, but there's plenty of room for groups, and at least the place is clean. The gigantic grill is outside, just tell them what you want, ribs, pork, steak, chicken, all made to order on the spot. You can actually get on a lot easier here if you don't speak Spanish, too. They'll do pinchos (a skewer kebab type thing), sandwiches, or what ever, just pipe up and it's yours. Portions are large, prices are low, and the dishes are all around delicious. I started out with the steak pinchos and moved on to a grilled chicken sandwich drenched with chimichurri. I'm pretty well done eating for the day after a visit here, no matter the time of day. I loved this place on my first visit, and the family and I come back regularly.

I came to casa maiz. This is the worst service I have ever received at a Latin restaurant in years. I honestly would say I was probably a hair string away from getting into a physical discussion with the manager/ supervisor (Humberto) behind the counter. I also had to go wait outside in the heat for almost 20-30mins to select what meat I would like to eat. I would say this is first and last time I will ever come here. The average plate starts at $17 each. I could have easily gone some where else with this group of 12 people and gotten way better service for the same price if not better. The only person I would say was decent was the cashier at the end of the line (Naylin).

This place is excellent! I go to buy fresh masa for tamales but stay for the frituras de maiz and the laid back ambiance. I love the servers' 3rd world attitudes (Jan D's words) and last time I was there they all helped me identify food and engaged in perfectly nice small talk with me and my whole group. Maybe it's because I am also from a third world country and we can sense each other but probably it's because the servers are perfectly nice people. The paleta ahumada is out of this world delicious but you can't buy pieces only the whole paleta. :( Obviously the place is super clean, well ventilated, and bright.

When in Hialeah this place is Worth a stop. It is what you get Palacio de Los Jugos procreates with Molina's Barbecue and Comida Por La Libra joins in the tasty but sloppy fun. It's very clean and the food has very good presentation. I ordered outside at the barbecue area where you can see your order being cooked. My churrasco sandwich was delicious. The pincho so so. Inside are prepared foods, juices and shakes that look pretty good. This place recently opened and is attracting large crowds because it's casual, fast and inexpensive.

Not bad, if you remember Blue Sky it's similar. Food by the pound, cheap, and good.

Stopped by when driving down to Key West and couldn't find much on the highway. So glad I did so. Most delicious sea food I've ever eaten, hands down! I will forevermore dream of their salmon and seafood stew.

Casa Maiz, what a dissapointment. I was in line waiting for tamales while my husband was outside sweating waiting for food as well for 35 minutes. I made the line inside for about 30 minutes, when I asked for tamales at the counter of food, they said that they had to give the last bit of it to a client who ordered it over the phone and that I would have to wait for 20 more minutes. I brought my family of 12 to this restaurant, and instead of getting good customer service for my large party, the manager (Humberto) treated me horribly and said "well too bad for you, you'll have to wait" The place was chaotic, packed with people, and for the prices of the food and heat we had to endure, I expected better customer service. I was treated so horribly by the manager that the two customers behind me told Humberto they did not want to order anymore because of the way he just treated me. I will not be returning to Casa Maiz. The only good thing I can take with me from Casa Maiz is Naylin, a sweet heart at the register.

I've been to this place twice, both times on the weekend, and both times around 12:30. My review is based on weekend lunch. This place is awesome. The food, although the same concept as El Palacios de Los Jugos, is far superior. Both times we've been with several people and thus have been able to sample several items. The churrasco sandwich, vaca frita, pollo a la Milanesa, the rinonada steak, the chicken grilled steak, arroz imperial, oxtail, tamales, fried plantains, fried boniato, yucca with mojo, all of it delicious! The corn and malanga fritters seem to be very popular, however,I did feel these were a bit greasy. I make great desserts and so their desserts did not impress, they were, in my opinion, average. The place is a lot more sanitary than El Palacio and most of it is air conditioned. I will continue going back during lunch on weekends. I can see when such a variety of food, unless continuously being sold could dry out. However, at the time and day I've gone it is absolutely delicious.
