We've stayed at Magnolia many times over the years and have always enjoyed our visits. We've been in 3 different cottages, the carriage house and my husband has stayed in the main house. All are charming in their own ways. The most recent visit (Cinnamon cottage) was on a cross-country driving trip with our 2 dogs. Cindy & Joe were very accommodating and provided us with throws to put over the furniture and bed before the dogs jumped all over them. We had a little yard for them, too. Although the cottage has 2 bedrooms, we were only charged for one - just close the door on the extra room & leave it closed. Nice little kitchen, living room & porch with a swing and rockers. Breakfast is always tasty. Cindy noticed that I didn't eat the poached eggs she served and, over my protests, fixed me something else. Other days we had stuffed french toast or a savory frittata, good coffee & OJ, and fresh fruit. And from 5-7:00 every day, there are wine and cheese or cookies. Cindy and Joe are wonderful hosts and feel like family. We remember their past pets, they remember our moms. They know Gainesville inside and out & can offer advice or directions to just about anything. The lively downtown district is a short walk away - an added bonus. We had planned to stay in a cheaper place this visit, but reviews of most of them were bad or they didn't take 2 dogs. And by the time pet fees were added to the better places they were in the same price range as Magnolia, so of course we opted to stay at "home".

Very comfortable and varied housing options. Great location walking distance to downtown. Have stayed here many nights. Never disappointed.

We arrived on a Monday and it was a really chilly day in early Feb. We loved that our room had a gas fireplace. Room was funky and fun. Bathroom slightly dated. Breakfast was fantastic. You can walk to town for good dinner choices, which is always a plus.

Nice place, if you are going to Gainesville it is definitely the place to go, AND they take children (but leave the dog alone?) Not sure those two go together in a way that makes sense. Free beer! Nice touch, they leave about a six pack over the weekend. Michelob (Budweiser's more sophisticated cousin.) They have a decent movie selection great wine and cheese for an afternoon sit down. Some of their guest houses have a little porch (another nice touch.) The breakfast is OK, nothing to brag about... eating outside is a pretty nice touch, the weather was really nice for our entire stay, and the outside dinning is close to a nice pond on property. We got some really great pictures from this place. We went for a friend's wedding, and this was the closest place (less than 4 blocks away) and the only place that took children that we could find (I refuse to stay in a hotel, the worst bed and breakfast is better than the best hotel)

Everything here is very historically deep. Blair our hostess is true southern bell and experimental cook!

Headed through Gainseville on a business trip. The hotel/motel selections were limited and it was a pleasure to find a historic district in Gainesville with a good number of Bed and Breakfast to choose from. Magnolia Plantation is a 5 acre assembly of the Historic Baird House CIRCA 1885 and seperate cottages. It was purchased and restored in 1990 by returning University of Florida graduates Cindy and Joe who were hospitable Inn Keepers. The main house is a 3 story, 5400 square foot Victorian style home. The parlor serves wine and cheese each afternoon and has a large choice of Inn rooms. The house sits within a densely landscaped setting surrounded by individual cottages. We took up residence in Jessica's Courtyard a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, living room, full kitchen with breakfast area. You enter the cottage through a privacy gate in brick courtyard walls on a along a brick walk to the sun room with quarry tile, queen Anne chairs and loveseat open to the well landscaped courtyard. The private courtyard had 2 magnificent oaks, Spanish moss and a running fountain. On a walk thru the grounds you will see large oaks, boxwood hedges, camellias and a host of additional trees and shrubs. There are numerous, fountains and ponds along brick walk ways and paths that connect the cottages to the main house and summer kitchen dining area. Furnishings are in the typical Victorian Inn manner, queen Ann chairs, Victorian love seats, built in book cases full of reading materials along with the creature comforts of television and DVD player with DVD lending library in the main house. Queen Ann 4 poster bed with canopy and steps to the raised bed in one room and raised twin beds in the second with antique spreads and quilts in each. Plantation shutters provide privacy while a combination shower/whirlpool bath / soaking tub dominates the bathroom with tradition Inn robes of course. There is a pleasant outdoor dining area at the summer kitchen to enjoy your breakfast behind the main house. The breakfast was good, Belgian waffle, sausage links, fresh fruit bowl, fresh Orange Juice and mango muffin but only average. The collection of Inns in this small Historic district provide an oasis in the downtown area of Gainesville adjacent to the University of Florida. Walks through the well maintained historic district were enjoyable and with 10 minutes of downtown. While other Inns may have a more refined atmosphere and service we found Magnolia to be comfortable and pet friendly and would most certainly return. Reservations were handled well and accurate. Checkin was personal with a guided walk to our cottage.

Overall fine. Probably one of your better choices in Gainesville. For the uninitiated, Gainesville has a very limited selection of places to stay. If you are seeking something more than the collection of average, 3-star hotels dotted around campus and along I-75, Magnolia Plantation Inn may be the choice for you. We were immediately greeted on the telephone in a pleasant and warm manner. Of course you know you arranging to stay in an older home cloistered with semi-antiques and adorned the with inconveniences of an age gone past (i.e. miniscule bathrooms). So why stay at a B&B? In my opinion, it is for "homey hospitality" and the Magnolia does not disappoint. I was very close to booking up the street at the wedding-factory-B&B (see other reviews for the name) but the owner blew me off when I called and did not call me back. So much the better, as I had the pleasure of working with Blair to make my reservation. She was pleasant and real. No false hospitality. Check-in was a breeze. We simply identified ourselves and she gave us keys. Nothing other than that. The property is expansive and includes several cottages. We holed up in the Miss Huey cottage which is approximately 1,200 square feet and includes a kitchen, an eating area/Florida room and 2 bedrooms. The neighborhood is quiet and lovely. My wife and I enjoyed just rocking away on the front porch, reading a book and watching the world go by in slow motion. Meals were buffet-style and very nicely prepared. Excellent selection too. My only hang-ups about the site are purely personal preference and relate to how many do-dads and chachka are literally stuffed into every crevice. A little too much for me, but maybe that is what you are looking for in a B&B. Located within a 10 minute walk from good restaurants, bars and coffee shops in Gainesville. Overall we had a nice time and would likely stay again if our path strays as far as Gainesville.
