The name of the place certainly didn't sound exciting but the reviews were amazing so we had to try it. We pulled up to the tiny store front in a very old fashion strip plaza. The plaza looked like old Davie, Fl. Anyways lets get to the food. We walked in and a very nice man greets us with a warm South African accent. We asked him what we should try and he recommended based on our taste the spinach and feta and chicken curry. Just to clarify, these are essentially extremely flaky buttery puffed pastry filled with different flavors such as beef, chicken, lentil, and other veggies. It's definitely a Indian influence but 100% traditional S. African if that makes any sense. Anyhow...these pies were insanely good. Extremely flakey and the fillings were so fresh, moist, and delicious. Here's the real kicker......this place has been around for over 19 years!!!!....ask the owner to taste his S. African beef jerky. It's like NO other jerky you have ever tried before...AMAZING!

I discover this place about a month ago, and am so pleased. The pies are delicious. The sausage rolls and Bobotie are just amazing. Never had food like this before. The icing on the cake is the owner. He and his wife are very hospitable and nice. I highly recommend it!

This place can be filed under "F" for great find for Foodies! South African foods in the heart of South Florida (conveniently just a half block of Federal Highway/US1 off of Florinada (45 Street) Meal in a Pie serves up just that - meat pies - that are rather large and substantial; I was full after eating just one and a half (but my gluttonous self wouldn't take no for an answer and finished the second). Because the contents of the pies are enclosed in a very flaky layered dough that is basically puff pastry; but with the complexity of the layers of baklava and very buttery; these pies are not for the dieters amongst us or should be considered, IMHO, an everyday treat. But treats they are to indulge in and wave the calorie police goodbye while you tuck into some pretty yummy flavors; chicken in a white tarragon sauce; lamb and curry; lamb or beef with veggies and potatoes - there's about 10 options to choose from inclluding pastry dough wrapped hot dogs and sausages - but again - this dough is rather rich almost to the point of unctuous - I can only speak for me but I couldn't eat more than 2 at one sitting. I also purchased a very yummy piri-piri hot sauce that is an excellent condiment and a jar of sliced guava in a rich syrup. There's quite a few goodies in this small establishment; sodas, certainly a rich vein of candies and chocolates, and a very hospitable host. I'm looking forward to return and explore some more and try out some other pie flavors - but after a brisk walk around the block first to counter the calories!

This place is a gem! I recently returned from South Africa and was craving some SA food while visiting family in South Florida. I did a quick Google search and came across Meal in a Pie. Fast forward a few days and I found myself happily devouring the chicken curry pie while my dad got the lamb curry pie. Both were great! The pastry is very light and not greasy at all, and the filling is very well seasoned. I definitely plan to return soon and try the bobotie, which wasn't available at the time I stopped by. Overall a great meal.

This small South African store carries homemade pies/pasties/patties (whatever they're called) and a variety of South African (or at least popular there) spices, sauces, snacks, sodas, etc. The main draw for me were the meat pies ($5.59 each) of which I had the bobotie, mild curried ground beef mixed with fruit. The pastry was warm and flaky, and the filling had a mild kick with a hint of raisins and other fruits I couldn't distinguish. One of the cool things is that they distinguish the different pies by different markings (mine had a raised circle, others had a diagonal line, two parallel lines etc) so that with the menu, you'll know what you got. I'd love to try some of the spices/sauces but with many at $7.99 which is more than I'm used to. That said, it's also probably because there's far fewer South Africans than British expatriates in Florida. I did end up buying a box of condensed milk "rusks" which were explained as biscuits ($6.99) and a South African pear soda ($3.25). Give the place a try, especially if you're craving a snack before hitting Kalahari Bar (a South African bar) next door.

Meal in a Pie is a rather nifty cross or combination of what is a South African condiment/accessory food shop, a South African food take out and South African bistro. It's the only place I know of to get fresh, tasty well prepared South African treats like their namesake meat pie, bobotie or some decent strips of biltong. I've been stopping here frequently over the years, not only for their meat pies but also because they seem to be the only area source for various traditional South African condiments and generally hard to find assortments of chutneys. For those who have never tried a South African meat pie with its delicious minced meats, I'd highly recommend that they do. The owner/manager is always most pleasant, not only providing good service but also a valued source of information concerning anything related to the culinary world of South African cuisine.

We also had a sausage roll and was delicious. They have the pies frozen to prepare at home as well. Very friendly man at the counter. I highly recommend.

Want to try some great South African meals, this is the place. My father-in-law introduced me to this place and I have fallen in love with the pies ever since. My favorite meat pie Bobotie. You also must try droewors & biltong. Once you know you favorite pies, I recommend getting there when it opens and purchase your favorite pies frozen to eat at home.

Ever since I visited South Africa for the World Cup, I've been craving some good Bibotie. This place has it. The flaky, buttery crust... well seasoned stuffing (and plenty of it)... Peri peri sauce on the side with a cool Appletiser. Delicious. Call ahead and they will make it fresh from the oven. The owner is also super friendly and helpful.

another awesome little hole in the wall! Selling South African goods kinda reminiscent of English goods. All kinds of interesting sauces, spices, juices and chocolates. Very interesting things to look at. This is really a take out place, there isn't much room to dine but there are a couple of stools and 1 little table for 4. I went with some co-workers. We got the bobotie, curry chicken, regular chicken, steak pies and a sausage roll. Each pie is so delicious and the pastry is so buttery and flaky goodness. The owner is very nice and made us non South Africans feel totally welcomed. Great little place, great meals in a pie!

Just stopped in for lunch. This is a small South African Market with great little pies/pastries. Just enough room for about eight people at a time to sit and eat. I ordered the bobotie. We all loved it. My son ordered the spinach and feta pie. Really tasty. My wife ordered the beef and curry. It was tasty as well. All of the pies were light and flaky, and they tasted very fresh. The Gentalman behind the counter was very friendly and put up with all of my questions. Judging by his accent He was from South Africa. There were several varieties of pies for me to come back and try. I can't wait.

I love Cornish pasties and English/Irish pies, and this is the South African version. I like going to this little shop to get a pie to go -- whether it's steak and kidney (or lamb and kidney), bobotie (wiki it) , or something more "normal". They are so hearty and comforting and yummy. I like the flaky butter crust. Plus, the guy behind the counter is super polite and has a lovely South African accent. They have biltong (jerky) here too, but no game meats like they have everywhere in South Africa due to export laws I'm sure. Only beef here. The shop also has some desserts and goods for ex-pats. It's such a cute little place. There are a few seats and a table for eating there, but most people take it to go. Or you could maybe take it next door to the Kalahari bar (South African as well) and order yourself up a beer to go with the pie. I'm not an ex-pat, but I'm in love with South Africa. I've been to Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the winelands in the cape. So crazy to find a little bit of South Africa here! Note: they run out of the most popular flavor pies kinda early at lunch time, so don't come here to pick up a late lunch pie if you want more selection.

I was recommended to this spot by an English friend. I am so glad that I stopped by. The gentleman behind the counter was very welcoming and cheery always a bonus and a great way to start in any establishment I ordered a can of Schweppes Dry Lemon and 2 pies. My choice were the steak and kidney and lamb pastie to go. I had to wait 5 minutes for the pastie as it was still baking in the oven. That's the kind of freshness I like. By the time we got around to them that evening they were cold and we decided not to reheat them. In the UK it is not at all unusual to do so as they were often made to serve as part of a traveling or work meal or a picnic item. These pies are big, gloriously made puff pastry pockets filled to overflowing. The s&k was absolutely delicious! The thickness of the gravy was perfect as was the ratio of beef to kidney. I couldn't fault it in any way. The pastie however was not quite what I expected. The lamb was not an issue but I prefer and am used to the English style of this treat. I need a lot more carrot, onion and potato got me to think of this as a pastie. Of course this also is an interpretation of the dish and I'm sure that my bias is just that. Considering it overall I will say it was also very well put together. Im looking forward to trying more of the menu options in the near future and this time I'll try them warm!!!! Pricing was $4.99 & $5.99 respectively which all things considers is a fair price for such well produced products.

Canada is a beautiful progressive country, but it does have it's hiccups. Believe it or not when I was 6 years old and about 10 years old in Oshawa and Toronto respectively I was chased by the Ku Klux Klan(KKK) or Ku Klux Klan wannabe's. The first time I was chased while I was bicycling with my Anglo-Canadian friends in a paved walking park, then out of the blue these three dudes( older teenagers or maybe in their twenties) with white pointed hat/face covering started chasing me with crow bars and yelling "n*gger" over and over again. They only chased me ignoring my Anglo friends. I dropped my bike and took off on foot, trust me even at 6 years old not even Usain Bolt could have caught me that day. The second time I was with a bi-racial friend in a forested area around our building complex in Toronto. This time it was only one dude but much older and he also was wearing a white pointed hat/face covering but was also wearing the complete white gown. He had a very large hunting knife in his hand and he also announced his presence yelling "n*gger" over and over again. I think by the third uttering of "n*gger" we were about 200 meters away from this dude. The first incident when I told my parents a huge police presence showed up, at the time I didn't understand why so many police officers showed up. The second incident in Toronto had an even more pronounced police presence and I still didn't understand why. At the time I had no idea what a "n*gger" was nor the KKK, I just thought these dudes were bully's pretending to be ghost's. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized what I had actually experienced. I then kind of understood why my parents were to embarrassed to explain to me what I had encountered. I found it kind of pathetic a very very small minority of Canadians were trying to import a very sick aspect of conservative American culture into Canada. So as a young adult when I decided to visit South Africa just two years after apartheid fell in 94', I really had no idea what to expect or see. The culinary history of South Africa is quite rich and unique in that it's a combination of the cuisines of the Bantu cultures, British, Dutch, Indonesian (who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the Dutch) and the east Indians( who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the British). I was staying in an affluent suburb of Johannesburg called Sandton, but I also visited the "Black" Townships of Soweto and Alexandra. I was still able to see some remnants of the horrors of South African apartheid before it was white washed by the ANC, but I also experienced a rich culture of diverse friendly people along with their delicious cuisine. Stop what you're doing and just eat at this place right now. Yes, I'm talking to you. The one reading this yelp review to see if this slightly hidden place you've never heard of is any good. It's fantastic. When you walk in you're stepping into a very small shop that sells a bunch of goodies from South Africa. You're greeted by the super friendly owner (you'll know who he is due to the accent) and he'll answer any questions you might have. Their main thing is pastries filled with various meats. There's lamb, chicken, beef, and others and some use curry. By far the best thing here are the Bobotie pies. It's ground beef and curry with freaken magic thrown in. I'm resisting driving there now to get one (I luckily live down the street pretty much). Also, if you live far away and need your fix, you can purchase frozen pies that you can cook up later in your oven. You can also call ahead to make sure they cook up some of your favorites because they do run out of the popular pies. So, give this place a try. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Amazing find! This small South African market is home to some amazing meat and vegetable pies. I tried the Bobotie and was blown away. It's a ground beef pie... Light curry flavor and slightly sweet - amazing! Besides the small market, they really only sell their delicious pies and sausage rolls. MUST try! I will definitely be back and plan on buying a bunch of their frozen pies to make at home.

I've been to Smitty's right across the street many times as a kid with my parents. Why the heck did they never take me to eat at this little gem?! I actually discovered it while making a wrong turn and decided to pop in. The smells coming out of this joint are tantalizing - delicious meat pie/puff pastry heaven. The owner came out and informed me about his biggest seller - the Chicken Curry, and that his shop has been in business for 19 years! Wow. I couldn't resist having the lamb pasty, and I ordered the Shepherd's Pie for my hubby and blissfully scurried on home to dive in. The first bite was light, buttery and flaky and filled with the most tender, large chunks of perfectly seasoned, succulent lamb, bits of vegetable and a gravy consisting of taters. I've never been much for having my meals all in one go but damn this was so good. I didn't even want to waste time sitting down in order to divulge in this parcel. If I ever have a lamb craving again, I'll come back for my $6 lamb pasty. And I love the food code symbols baked on top of the pie to distinguish the different flavors. My husband liked the Shepherd's Pie but really wants to try the chicken curry (I figured he would prefer the meat over the chicken). I took a bite and it was a bit more salty than my Lamb pasty, but still really good - I just prefer that bloody good lamb.

Found this place through yelp and wanted to try it since I have never had South African food. The store has been there for 18 years! I ordered a chicken curry pie and a bibotie. The chicken curry was not spicy. The phyllo dough shell is stuffed with the curry chicken. The dough is rich, buttery, and flakey. The bibotie is a flakey dough also, but is filled with a sweet ground beef and raisons. You can taste the Indian seasonings on both items. For both it cost me $11. They have everything frozen and available to take home and heat up. They are baking every hour and it depends when you walk in what will be available. During my visit the bibotie was frozen and the chicken curry was fresh and ready. I heated up the bibotie at home and it came out great. They give you cooking instructions. It was definitely a neat place to check out. I recommend carry out because there are only a few small tables. However, for the value i can go have an all you can eat Indian buffet....I know I won't get the flakey crust, but the inside filling is very similar in taste on what you find on an Indian buffet. There is free parking right in front. Staff was very friendly and quick.

Pretty good if you're looking for something different. The owner is very friendly and they have a neat selection of groceries. We tried 3 of the pies. The only thing is that they got greasy but it's because we were greedy. The pies are huge.

Want to try some great South African meals, this is the place. My father-in-law introduced me to this place and I have fallen in love with the pies ever since. My favorite meat pie Bobotie. You also must try droewors & biltong. Once you know you favorite pies, I recommend getting there when it opens and purchase your favorite pies frozen to eat at home.

Amazing pies this place is not only consistent but the food is excellent small quaint place to relax and have lunch the biltong is a must to try and the sausage roll is to die for. I recommend this to all my friends.

Ever since I visited South Africa for the World Cup, I've been craving some good Bibotie. This place has it. The flaky, buttery crust... well seasoned stuffing (and plenty of it)... Peri peri sauce on the side with a cool Appletiser. Delicious. Call ahead and they will make it fresh from the oven. The owner is also super friendly and helpful.

another awesome little hole in the wall! Selling South African goods kinda reminiscent of English goods. All kinds of interesting sauces, spices, juices and chocolates. Very interesting things to look at. This is really a take out place, there isn't much room to dine but there are a couple of stools and 1 little table for 4. I went with some co-workers. We got the bobotie, curry chicken, regular chicken, steak pies and a sausage roll. Each pie is so delicious and the pastry is so buttery and flaky goodness. The owner is very nice and made us non South Africans feel totally welcomed. Great little place, great meals in a pie!

Awesome hole in the wall with great food. South African baked pasties. You can also get them frozen, so you can stock up and cook em later. If you're in that area, definitely stop in for a bite.

Just stopped in for lunch. This is a small South African Market with great little pies/pastries. Just enough room for about eight people at a time to sit and eat. I ordered the bobotie. We all loved it. My son ordered the spinach and feta pie. Really tasty. My wife ordered the beef and curry. It was tasty as well. All of the pies were light and flaky, and they tasted very fresh. The Gentalman behind the counter was very friendly and put up with all of my questions. Judging by his accent He was from South Africa. There were several varieties of pies for me to come back and try. I can't wait.

Just tried it for the first time yesterday. We sat outside and thoroughly enjoyed our meals-in-pies! I had the beef curry, and my wife had the spinach and feta cheese. Yummy! Had to go back today and I got a sausage roll and a lamb curry to go. Just finished and had to post that they were just awesome!

I love Cornish pasties and English/Irish pies, and this is the South African version. I like going to this little shop to get a pie to go -- whether it's steak and kidney (or lamb and kidney), bobotie (wiki it) , or something more "normal". They are so hearty and comforting and yummy. I like the flaky butter crust. Plus, the guy behind the counter is super polite and has a lovely South African accent. They have biltong (jerky) here too, but no game meats like they have everywhere in South Africa due to export laws I'm sure. Only beef here. The shop also has some desserts and goods for ex-pats. It's such a cute little place. There are a few seats and a table for eating there, but most people take it to go. Or you could maybe take it next door to the Kalahari bar (South African as well) and order yourself up a beer to go with the pie. I'm not an ex-pat, but I'm in love with South Africa. I've been to Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the winelands in the cape. So crazy to find a little bit of South Africa here! Note: they run out of the most popular flavor pies kinda early at lunch time, so don't come here to pick up a late lunch pie if you want more selection.

I was recommended to this spot by an English friend. I am so glad that I stopped by. The gentleman behind the counter was very welcoming and cheery always a bonus and a great way to start in any establishment I ordered a can of Schweppes Dry Lemon and 2 pies. My choice were the steak and kidney and lamb pastie to go. I had to wait 5 minutes for the pastie as it was still baking in the oven. That's the kind of freshness I like. By the time we got around to them that evening they were cold and we decided not to reheat them. In the UK it is not at all unusual to do so as they were often made to serve as part of a traveling or work meal or a picnic item. These pies are big, gloriously made puff pastry pockets filled to overflowing. The s&k was absolutely delicious! The thickness of the gravy was perfect as was the ratio of beef to kidney. I couldn't fault it in any way. The pastie however was not quite what I expected. The lamb was not an issue but I prefer and am used to the English style of this treat. I need a lot more carrot, onion and potato got me to think of this as a pastie. Of course this also is an interpretation of the dish and I'm sure that my bias is just that. Considering it overall I will say it was also very well put together. Im looking forward to trying more of the menu options in the near future and this time I'll try them warm!!!! Pricing was $4.99 & $5.99 respectively which all things considers is a fair price for such well produced products.

Canada is a beautiful progressive country, but it does have it's hiccups. Believe it or not when I was 6 years old and about 10 years old in Oshawa and Toronto respectively I was chased by the Ku Klux Klan(KKK) or Ku Klux Klan wannabe's. The first time I was chased while I was bicycling with my Anglo-Canadian friends in a paved walking park, then out of the blue these three dudes( older teenagers or maybe in their twenties) with white pointed hat/face covering started chasing me with crow bars and yelling "n*gger" over and over again. They only chased me ignoring my Anglo friends. I dropped my bike and took off on foot, trust me even at 6 years old not even Usain Bolt could have caught me that day. The second time I was with a bi-racial friend in a forested area around our building complex in Toronto. This time it was only one dude but much older and he also was wearing a white pointed hat/face covering but was also wearing the complete white gown. He had a very large hunting knife in his hand and he also announced his presence yelling "n*gger" over and over again. I think by the third uttering of "n*gger" we were about 200 meters away from this dude. The first incident when I told my parents a huge police presence showed up, at the time I didn't understand why so many police officers showed up. The second incident in Toronto had an even more pronounced police presence and I still didn't understand why. At the time I had no idea what a "n*gger" was nor the KKK, I just thought these dudes were bully's pretending to be ghost's. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized what I had actually experienced. I then kind of understood why my parents were to embarrassed to explain to me what I had encountered. I found it kind of pathetic a very very small minority of Canadians were trying to import a very sick aspect of conservative American culture into Canada. So as a young adult when I decided to visit South Africa just two years after apartheid fell in 94', I really had no idea what to expect or see. The culinary history of South Africa is quite rich and unique in that it's a combination of the cuisines of the Bantu cultures, British, Dutch, Indonesian (who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the Dutch) and the east Indians( who were brought to South Africa as slaves by the British). I was staying in an affluent suburb of Johannesburg called Sandton, but I also visited the "Black" Townships of Soweto and Alexandra. I was still able to see some remnants of the horrors of South African apartheid before it was white washed by the ANC, but I also experienced a rich culture of diverse friendly people along with their delicious cuisine. The owner and workers are very friendly, and the customer service is super. ++ it's a good idea to call ahead and have them put your particular pies in the oven 30 minutes before arrival.

Stop what you're doing and just eat at this place right now. Yes, I'm talking to you. The one reading this yelp review to see if this slightly hidden place you've never heard of is any good. It's fantastic. When you walk in you're stepping into a very small shop that sells a bunch of goodies from South Africa. You're greeted by the super friendly owner (you'll know who he is due to the accent) and he'll answer any questions you might have. Their main thing is pastries filled with various meats. There's lamb, chicken, beef, and others and some use curry. By far the best thing here are the Bobotie pies. It's ground beef and curry with freaken magic thrown in. I'm resisting driving there now to get one (I luckily live down the street pretty much). Also, if you live far away and need your fix, you can purchase frozen pies that you can cook up later in your oven. You can also call ahead to make sure they cook up some of your favorites because they do run out of the popular pies. So, give this place a try. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Amazing find! This small South African market is home to some amazing meat and vegetable pies. I tried the Bobotie and was blown away. It's a ground beef pie... Light curry flavor and slightly sweet - amazing! Besides the small market, they really only sell their delicious pies and sausage rolls. MUST try! I will definitely be back and plan on buying a bunch of their frozen pies to make at home.

I've been to Smitty's right across the street many times as a kid with my parents. Why the heck did they never take me to eat at this little gem?! I actually discovered it while making a wrong turn and decided to pop in. The smells coming out of this joint are tantalizing - delicious meat pie/puff pastry heaven. The owner came out and informed me about his biggest seller - the Chicken Curry, and that his shop has been in business for 19 years! Wow. I couldn't resist having the lamb pasty, and I ordered the Shepherd's Pie for my hubby and blissfully scurried on home to dive in. The first bite was light, buttery and flaky and filled with the most tender, large chunks of perfectly seasoned, succulent lamb, bits of vegetable and a gravy consisting of taters. I've never been much for having my meals all in one go but damn this was so good. I didn't even want to waste time sitting down in order to divulge in this parcel. If I ever have a lamb craving again, I'll come back for my $6 lamb pasty. And I love the food code symbols baked on top of the pie to distinguish the different flavors. My husband liked the Shepherd's Pie but really wants to try the chicken curry (I figured he would prefer the meat over the chicken). I took a bite and it was a bit more salty than my Lamb pasty, but still really good - I just prefer that bloody good lamb.

Found this place through yelp and wanted to try it since I have never had South African food. The store has been there for 18 years! I ordered a chicken curry pie and a bibotie. The chicken curry was not spicy. The phyllo dough shell is stuffed with the curry chicken. The dough is rich, buttery, and flakey. The bibotie is a flakey dough also, but is filled with a sweet ground beef and raisons. You can taste the Indian seasonings on both items. For both it cost me $11. They have everything frozen and available to take home and heat up. They are baking every hour and it depends when you walk in what will be available. During my visit the bibotie was frozen and the chicken curry was fresh and ready. I heated up the bibotie at home and it came out great. They give you cooking instructions. It was definitely a neat place to check out. I recommend carry out because there are only a few small tables. However, for the value i can go have an all you can eat Indian buffet....I know I won't get the flakey crust, but the inside filling is very similar in taste on what you find on an Indian buffet. There is free parking right in front. Staff was very friendly and quick.

This hole-in-the-wall little gem is an awesome find! South African food at it's best. My favourite pie is the Curry. I get them by the packs of 5. They are tangy and delicious beyond words. The manager is friendly and nice. You can eat in or take out. Spice is the word here!! Simply the best!!
