I guess this place just moved and is now in a pretty deserted strip mall. all in all, its a pretty good breakfast spot. Food was not amazing but good. Waitresses were very friendly but food took a while to get to the table. We had the lighter options, eggs florentine and egg white omelette, both very filling. My omelette was full of perfectly cooked vegetables. My other friend had a crab omelette and it was huge, he said very good. We all got an order of French toast to share, three very thick sliced pieces were very fluffy and tasty.

I'm giving only two stars because I can't give 3 based on the food being a bit under seasoned. That said, it is a cheerful, clean place with a nice menu. I think my mistake was coming for lunch, not breakfast. If you read the reviews it sounds like breakfast is the star. BTW this place is vastly superior to either T Rays or DooWop Diner which are other owned-by-locals places on AI that are reviewed on this site. Our waitress was just a doll and I wish the food had been just a bit more remarkable. The potato salad is good, although a bit too much mayonnaise for my taste. I am wishing this place luck since it is located in a crushed-by-the-recession mostly vacant strip mall. Oh well, at least there is no problem finding a parking space!

The hubby and I are on vacation from Chicago. We asked around where the best place for brunch is and everyone said to go to Carolyn's, and we are SO glad we did! The staff is incredibly friendly, and despite being a very busy Sunday morning we were seated within 10 minutes. Our waitress, Sandra, was awesome - efficient and so friendly! The food was exceptional - we had French toast and a western omelette. You can really tell this place cares about every aspect of the customer experience. The owner, Carolyn, was there helping out and saying hi to people too! Can't recommend it enough! Thanks, Carolyn!

My wife and I enjoyed a great breakfast here during a recent visit to Amelia Island. I had the lumberjack, which included scrambled eggs, grits, and smoked sausage links. My wife the veggie breakfast quesadilla. Everything was superb, and the service was very good. We also bought two slices of Ms. Carolyn's legendary coconut cake to go. We will definitely be back!

Reviews were pretty accurate. A bit noisy. Shrimp n grits on oily side so I separated out the shrimp & dug out grits from sauce then it was fine. Good rib eye & tangy cole slaw. Really good coconut cake. Would give 3 1/2 score if I could.

This was one of the best breakfast meals we have had. Everything is freshly made and delicious. We had the crab omelet and the surfer - both were outstanding! Highly recommend!!!

Good breakfast had eggs with biscuit close to Omni and better, coffee is week but food is good solid. Starbucks is around the corner for better coffee. Chef Jo.

Sadly, the food here did not live up to the expectations nor the previous reviewers opines. Toast was dry, potatoes come only one way, theirs! Eggs were slimy when ordered over easy....Bacon was the only real redeeming item ordered. Waiter thought that dry toast was funny and offered no apology....will never return nor even tell foes to waste their money on this place....

Decided to head to the island for a Sunday breakfast but T-Ray's was closed. Ms. Carolyn's was second best rated so we decided to try it. First off, the food is fantastic. I had the Eggs Florentine and a bowl of oatmeal and my wife had pancakes. Excellent all the way around. The food came out quickly even though the place was full. Service here is lacking even though there are a LOT of staff. We had to flag one of them down after sitting at our table for 10 minutes, to get a menu. Once our server came, he was on top of things. I would suggest that they use a greeter to welcome everyone as they arrive and to get them seated quickly as it is a little chaotic when it does not need to be.

If you want a basic, tasty, hot breakfast served fast and by friendly people, Ms. Carolyn's can't be beat! Go there! They are open all days but Monday. The grits are good with some flavor; eggs are cooked just as ordered; the bacon is substantial and not overcooked; the only down note is the toast, it is just too plain. I would like to see them add some raisin bread to the white, wheat or rye choices. The toast comes dry with butter and jam on the table. We would have preferred more jam choices than grape or strawberry. One morning I tried the Eggs Benedict. I would not get these again. The hollandaise was a little runny and the whole dish was just so-so. Save that splurge for a fancier restaurant. We'll be back for the basics! A lot of people like this diner as it has been quite busy the mornings we have been there. Located in a strip mall, parking is not a problem.

Nice restaurant for breakfast. Our waitress was very friendly and the service was excellent. The heavenly hash was delicious. Everything was made to order and arrived quickly. They even made my veggie omelet with egg whites. They have old fashion diner mugs for coffee, a personal favorite., so I bought one for my collection. We will definitely go back.

We had the Western Omelet, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and eggs Benedict. Delish!

Not what I remembered.... Staff was very resistant to push together 2 tables for our 7 people(wanted us to split up and half sit at the bar. Glasses looked like beavers chewed on them and coffee mugs chipped(see picture) Staff had the nerve to tell me that the mugs will be replaced next month(as if that helped). Borderline rude service, several wrong orders served. I ordered an omelet with ham, the "ham" was 50% diced slabs of yellow pork fat. Plenty of good places around - feel free to skip this one.......UPDATE: had to stop for pepto bismol on the way home

The best breakfast on the island. Everything on the menu is cooked perfectly. We come here every year for a week and eat breakfast here every single day. Pancakes are exceptionally good! Also, recommend the sausage quesadillas. The Hippi is very tasty, too.

"Same Ms Carolyn's as old one on 14th. Same great omlets. Same great grits. More seating. More parking."

  • Laurie S.

Touted as one of the "best" on the island, this seems to let them get away with average breakfast fare and terrible customer service. Gave them three tries, the last being at their new location. When the staff seemed put out that we even inquired about breakfast at 10:50 on a Saturday (on top of half the tables being dirty), we walked out. There are many better options in the area than this!

Excellent omelette. Coca-cola was fantastic. The sausage and bacon used in the omelette was great and pancake portions were huge.

So fantastic! Ate there 3 times while in town. Excellent service. Between the 4 of us we tried the biscuits and gravy (real southern pepper gravy), the quiche, the eggs benedict, the pancakes, and the omelets. All were beyond great. The quiche was some of the best ever. Omelets were light and fluffly. The hollandaise sauce was perfect! We also took a slice each if the chocolate cake, coconut cake and red velvet cake for the road. They were delicious! Can't wait to go back and try their lunch!

Don't drive past this place! This restaurant is must if you're in the area for breakfast. We have only been here once, but the food was great! The service may need to step up their game, but it didn't phase us much. We were there to relax and were not in a hurry. The location of the restaurant is a little strange being in a strip mall, but don't let that deter you. This is more of a mom and pops place, but it's not too small. We were seated within 10 minutes of arriving (they were packed with it being a late Sunday morning). I ordered the biscuits and gravy and my boyfriend ordered the crab benedict. We ended up ordering a cinnamon roll towards the end and I'm glad we only ordered one... they are huge! No complaints about anything!

Stopped here on the way out of Amelia Island because it had such good reviews! We drove up to what looked to be an abandoned strip mall with just Ms Carolyn's there. There was a wait but only about 10 minutes. Inside was definitely a small town diner feel. Food was ok, coffee was ok. I got the loaded bowl and tried a pancake. The pancake was pretty good, better than the pancakes at the Ritz! Overall, I probably won't be coming back but I'd get the pancakes if I did.

We have breakfast this morning at Ms. Caroline's restaurant. I had the shrimp and grits and it was phenomenal. Normally I'll take a picture and then post but after taking one bite I had to eat a whole bowl before I posted pictures. The dish is prepared with fresh Florida shrimp, grits, spinach, onions, cheese, crumbled bacon and sausage gravy.

Went back for a 2nd time and it was as good as the 1st! This is a MUST go to place for breakfast for locals and vacationers! It was sooooooo good! They say their lunch is as good as their breakfast. Closed on Mondays. Open from 7:00 - 11:00 (breakfast) 11:00 - 3:00 (lunch)

We LOVE Ms. Carolyn's! Best cakes for miles (I have NEVER liked strawberry cakes or ice cream, because they always tasted like someone's idea of what strawberry is, rather than the actual fruit. HER strawberry cake, however, changed my views 180 degrees, as it is made w/real strawberries everywhere! Icing is absolutely horrid...in that I cannot stop eating it! I'm usually not a huge icing person, either, but this is like real-strawberry...fudge, perhaps? Buttercream extraordinaire, at the very least!!!), & brunch there is a TREAT! I don't know what the negative reviews are grumbling about - one lady actually said the scramble she ordered of sausage, egg, & cheese had the NERVE to come out as...sausage, egg, & cheese, scrambled together! Then she complained about too much cheese! Is that even possible? Sheesh. Poor lady w/her dreadful troubles. Must be so hard to be her. ANYWAY, MY favorite breakfast is the "Hippie Scramble", but I ask for poached eggs instead of scrambled (which is NEVER a problem at Ms. Carolyn's!). What you get is Eggs Benedict, but w/potatoes w/onions & green peppers instead of English Muffins! How brilliant is THAT?! It's heaven on a plate. I always ask for extra hollandaise & that's never an issue, like at some restaurants I've visited through the years. I poke open the perfectly-poached eggs, w/the whites firm but the yolk still runny (ask & they will cook them to your liking), and it flows all over the lovely potatoes. Then with the smoky Canadian bacon, zingy hollandaise, yum eggs, & awesome potatoes, my mouth is soon on cloud nine. I actually hear myself moaning in joy...I've looked around before, to see who was making those moans, & then realized it was I who was the "culprit". Just can't help it. Sigh. My husband loves the corned beef hash, & also says the coffee is good (I don't drink coffee). He says "it's not Starbucks (his favorite), but it's good." He's picky about his coffee, too. Perhaps people who complained about it have been there on an "off" day? We both LOVE the pancakes (ask for banana! Banana mushed in the batter, sliced into the poured batter, & then sliced on top of the finished pancake! WO! Perfection), but I warn you - they are HUGE! I always order two, end up eating only one, & then make my husband promise me he won't let me order more than one the next time. And so it goes... As to the waitstaff - AWESOME! The sweetest, kindest, most attentive-but-non-obtrusive waitstaff on the planet! They remember us (or at least pretend they do; what's the difference, really?!), & treat us like family...family who they actually like. Try it! You'll love it!

We stopped in for brunch prior to heading back home after our weekend getaway. Overall, not totally impressed with the food or service here. The food is mediocre at best and the coffee - I don't even think it should be called that. Whoever is making it clearly doesn't drink coffee or they would know how terrible it tastes! I had a scramble of some kind - eggs, sausage, and cheese. It was basically a sausage patty scrambled with eggs and so much cheese. The toast was a bit soggy and I wish we would have just stopped at Starbucks and grabbed a bagel or something. If this is one of the best brunch spots nearby, that would be pretty sad but would leave someone room to open an amazing restaurant. This place has seen better days and is in a weird strip mall that is a little bit deserted. Service was slow and with a 6 hour drive ahead of us, I hoped it would've been a bit more attentive and prompt.

My group ate breakfast there twice because we enjoyed it so much. I had the "Heavenly Hash" plate both days and loved it. The place seems to be popular with the older folks so that's probably a sign the rest of the menu tastes great.

I had the LumberJack Breakfast not as large as portrayed by the waitress...fast service - tasty smoked sausage was really salty but the eggs cooked perfectly....fairly inexpensive - no waiting kinda loud...louder than Starbucks but a good overall value..

Came for lunch. Really enjoyed our food and the coconut cake was awesome. Saw some pretty pretentious reviews on here regarding the location, seating, etc. I was happy with my service and experience. Not 5 star dining but definitely a unique twist on cafe/dinner food. Home made bread, unique style on dinner style foods, fast and efficient service.

Everything was delicious! You are guaranteed to leave stuffed, my friend and I couldn't finish our plates. Great prices and amazing service, everyone there is so nice and friendly. Definitely would want to come back.

Went here for breakfast while on vacation. We had tried a different place but it wasn't great so we tried here. We had Sam as our waitress and she was awesome. Very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Always refilling our coffee. A must have is the cinnamon roll. OMG. Just trust me. Order it. We also did order pancakes which were totally homemade, no Hungry Jack pancake mix out of a box here. Eggs Benedict was awesome too!

When we go here there was about 3 other people standing outside they are really busy so it took about 15 - 20 mins. When I got a table the waiter came over pretty quick (he had no personality) took our drink order. My husband ordered quesadilla breakfast with eggs and I ordered egg whites with bacon potatoes o'brien. Both of our orders were cold after us waiting for 30 mins for the food. When I told the waiter that the plate was cold he got an attitude and took it back and the microwaved it. The food was still cold and the bread was mushy. I then tried to eat it but I just couldn't. As I was sitting at the table I was yelping and someone comes over to me and asks me if I was ok. I then told her what was wrong and she apologized profusely. Immediately got Mrs. Carolyn for me to tell her what happened. Mrs. Carolyn apologized profusely and said she will address all the problems. This is not my first time coming here and I hope this was just a fluke. The other times the food was fantastic.

This place is awesome. My family loves it here. Classic go to place for locals and tourists a like in Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island, Fla. It's definitely a local favorite. Sometimes it takes a while to get a table and occasionally the place is so busy that the tables and floors gets messy. When they get busy, they don't do to go orders. I always get the omelette with cheese, bacon or sausage, jalapeño and spinach. My kids love their buttermilk pancakes. And their fruit bowl. For lunch, I recommend one of their signature sandwiches. But I always get the Swahili wings and a side Caesar salad. Their coconut cake is amazing! Enjoy! Jackie is my favorite server. She's fun and generous. A real pro. I wish they were open for dinner. When it was KP's, it was my favorite dinner spot in town.

All the positive reviews on breakfast are well deserved. Of the four other local recommendations, Ms Carolyn's was the only one I found open at 7:45 on a Tuesday. First day of five in Amelia Island, I was inspired to order the Crab Benedict. I asked and was advised that it is canned vs fresh catch, but I was undeterred. It was a huge portion, well seasoned and complimented the perfectly poached Benedict very well. Of course I also sampled the pancake. An excellent finisher for my sweet tooth. Service was prompt, continuous and "local". The only surprise drawback is the location - a half vacant strip mall. With all the beautiful architecture in Fernandina Beach, or Ocean frontage, this diner deserves a better placement. But still, breakfast served anywhere is good in my book.

I have been here a couple of times. Both times the place is so loud and the servers are not very friendly. The food is okay. The place is busy and strangle does not have a person to seat you. So if you don't grab a table (dirty or clean) you may find yourself waiting even longer. Crazy set up. The cakes are the best thing about this place. I live in the area and probably won't be back, except maybe to get some cake to go.

A family friend of ours recommended Ms. Carolyn's for breakfast and it did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and we received great service even though it was a pretty busy Saturday morning crowd. The pancakes were AWESOME! Definitely get the pancakes. The other food was decent, not the best I've ever had but good. We wont hesitate to go back next time we're on the island!

Great (and busy) place that has a home-cooked appeal. Like other reviewers have stated, it's busy- and seat yourselves. The indoor seating area is larger than Bright Mornings but there is no outdoor seating. The food came out fast, considering how busy they were, and our waitress was super nice and attentive. I ordered the Surfer, a pancake, potatoes O'Brien (home fries/ cubed potatoes with onions and spices)and a cinnamon roll (it's our last day of vacation- don't judge) and the wife got Eggs Florentine (Benedict). I expected smaller portions but was surprised to see how much came on a plate. The surfer was nicely stacked and smothered with a delicious and creamy homemade cheese sauce. The pancake stole the show for me- simple but fluffy. Next time I'm getting a stack of those. The cinnamon roll is made in house and slathered in icing and pecans and I had to force myself to stop halfway through. They had 2for1 mimosas as well! We are definitely coming back next time.

I drove a few minutes out of my way to have breakfast here based on the Yelp reviews. It was well worth it! The food was prepared perfectly and was delicious as was the coffee. But what makes this place great is their amazing staff. Again, worth the trip!

Plop Omelets Have been here a few times and overall the food is good. But the way the omelets are made aren't really to my liking and I've tried them a couple of times-- even asking the second time that it be prepared in the way I like, which the server assured me they could do but delivered the following anyway: Basically their omelets are made up of a large scrambled egg plopped on top of the ingredients. So if you order a spinach omelet, for example, you get a pile of spinach sitting underneath a large scrambled egg. I just call them "plop omelets." To me it's the equivalent of ordering a fruit cake and getting a slice of cake sitting atop a pile of fruit. I guess I like mine all mixed and cooked together.

Walked in on a Sunday. It's in a deserted strip mall but don't let that mislead you. It was very busy but we were seated fairly quickly and the service from Holly was excellent. The food came out pretty darn quick for the crowd. The kitchen has it going on. I had the loaded bowl with grits and bacon. It was yummy. No need to season the grits. The bacon was just a little over done but that wasn't an issue for me as I like it that way. The portions were more than ample. 2 girls could easily split the loaded bowl and be satisfied. I would definitely come back for breakfast. I would have given 5 stars but I noticed the host seating people before the poor wait staff was finished wiping down the tables. Just wait a minute that way the table is wiped and it gives the kitchen a little extra time between orders.

I'm kind of underwhelmed by my experience with this restaurant. The place was packed for breakfast and there was no waiting area, which left us awkwardly crowded inside the front door (it was nasty outside). The interior is very outdated. The food was good pretty much, not outstanding but good. I had eggs Florentine and it was kind of weird, the spinach was raw instead of steamed or sauteed. I'm giving it 3 stars because the service was excellent. The waitress was on point; she was friendly and quick.

  • Elvira P.

From the moment you walk in, Ms. Carolyn makes you feel at home. Sure it's loud, but it's an "everyone is home for the holiday" loud. Here they do one thing only, BREAKFAST, the most important meal of the day. And by the looks of it, everyone else in town seem to think the same. My husband and I love breakfast and Ms. Carolyn's did not disappoint. French toast, pancake and breakfast bowl were delicious and filling. Bacon and sausage were out of this world. Coffee was strong, flavorful and always filled to the brim. We'll be back for sure.

My husband and I regularly eat breakfast well afternoon while we travel. This showed up as a great place for that. Sadly they stopped serving at 11:00 and it was around 1 pm. Brain transition to lunch. I may have had the best shrimp and grits ever in my life! This may be one if the best combos known to man. Cheese Grits, w sautéed chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and lightly sautéed shrimp. It was heaven. This is not a low cal or low fat Item. It was fabulous! My husband has tuna salad and proclaimed it great as well. Everything is made freshly including salad dressings and bread. Enjoy this hole in the mall restaurant!

  • Chad P.

Great food! They serve breakfast all day which is a major plus, because they seem to be the only ones on the whole island to do so. I ordered the Portaburger (portabello mushroom patty). The pasta salad was refreshing and the plate of fruit was divine - super fresh, sweet, and juicy. I'd definitely go back. The server was a trip as well - totally kookie, but super sweet. Also loved the outdoor patio.

This is far and away the most popular place in town for breakfast. We've been several times. I'm always satisfied when I order pancakes-huge and tasty and a deal. I'm always disappointed when I order anything else. I recently selected "Eggs on 14th Street," referring to this eatery's former location. Eggs and coffee were fine, only one sausage patty, cold, mushy (seamed steamed) Wonder Bread, undistinguished not-very-hot O'Brien potatoes. Service is friendly and efficient, decor utilitarian.

Visited Ms. Carolyn's for breakfast on a recent Sunday morning. It's located in an otherwise abandoned strip mall a couple of blocks from the beach. I'm a breakfast/brunch connoisseur and I prefer to eat at independent establishments like Ms. Carolyn's over chain restaurants like Perkins or Friendly's because I prefer to try locally-owned establishments that reflect the uniqueness of the local community. Our server was very friendly and personable; our orders were served quickly and accurately. As for the food, although many on Amelia Island claim this is the best breakfast in town, it was solidly average. Nothing about my omelette or potatoes were memorable enough to warrant discussion.

My family loves Ms. Carolyn's. My parents are locals and eat here at least once a week. When my husband and I come to visit, we have to stop here for a Wild Turkey! I also love breakfast here (the omelets are huge and delicious!). The staff is very friendly and welcoming to locals and tourists alike. Ms. Carolyn's is a hidden gem, as it's not downtown, but it's worth veering off the beaten path (especially if you like chocolate and/or coconut cake!).
