One of my favorite restaurant/bars in Daytona. They never disappoint. They have a great selection of beer and wines that are usually hard to find. They have a great delicatessen menu. I'm a big fan of the Cajun Dutchman and their New Yorker. But everything else I've had there has been very good. Their mini potato pancakes are awesome as a starter or a side. The staff is always pleasant and informative with their extensive beverage selections.

This place is a Hidden Gem. Mr Dunderbaks sits unassuming nestled between an as seen on TV store and Dillards. They offer over 250 different beers and a wide assortment of german and american cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and whimsical. You can eat drink and browse all of the knickknacks and hot sauces they have. And pick up an awesome beer stein or wine glass.

Mr. Dunderbak's is an awesome German deli, with a wide variety of sandwiches and other specialty items. Do NOT forget to order both the Foot Of Onion Rings and the German Potato Salad! If you like beer, they have what appears to be hundreds of varieties from all over the world. Then there is the deli side with cheeses and various prepared foods. And baskets... both empty and prepared with various collections of yummy tears for gift giving! AWESOME STUFF!

A great, unassuming bar/restaurant in a mall. I never would've guessed this place existed and was good. I didn't try the beers but my companions did and enjoyed them. The sauerkraut was served hot and was delicious with my bratwurst. For dessert I actually had the cheesecake, which was not German but was still very yummy. Friendly waitstaff. While you enjoy your beer, you can shop for sausage and spatzle. :)

Mr. D is a cute little German deli/restaurant. It's perfect for stopping in to grab a bite if you've been shopping in the mall, or if you just want to indulge in delicious German food! Personally, I always order the wiener schnitzel; it is to die for!

While I was looking at the German marizipan chocolates manager Brandon rudely stated to me how much he hated them and threw the remains of a bar he took a bite out the car window. I was baffled by a manager going out of his way to trash his product. We tried the cooked food and it was reheated or microwaved. Sauerkraut was not washed and salty. My lunch was presented on a wooden plate with two little plastic cups for my sauerkraut and potato salad. My wife had a sandwich. I grew up with authentic cooked German food and have been to good German restaurants and this is not it. Not recommended for cooked food or sandwiches.

It's a whole-in-the-wall kind of place that you stumble on one night and think to yourself ''yeah.. why not?'' It looks fun, a nice place to relax and grab a sandwich and a beer, and look at some interesting stuff they have on display. The food was meh; bland, small portions.. I paid $12 for 2 small sausage links and a couple frozen potato pancakes (they came out hot but you can tell they're not made fresh). It was disappointing really. 3 stars for food. The staff was iffy. The girl we had was nice but the guy that was working the other table by us was nasty. There's a bunch of tables in the back by the bar and a few that are at the front of the restaurant separated from everything else and this is where we sat (the place was full, it was trivia night) Now the reason for the lonely 2 stars is simple, this guy lost us as repeat customers. Ill explain.. This place is a mall which is obviously surrounded by retail stores and chains... and they decided it was a good idea to set up shop here for some reason.... a new is opening in the mall, right across from this place... H&M... which drives in tons of people of all ages and would make great business for this mom & pop restaurant right??? Well this stupid server thought it better of himself to cry & whine and curse up a storm about the '''f-ing hipsters that he's going to have to wait on soon'' and how he ''hates those f-ing prissy b*#ches so much..'' blah blah blah blah ..on & on & on about this nonsense. Meanwhile ... the table next to this has 2 young parents and a small boy who are horrified by the language their son is learning. It's safe to say the restaurant lost all 5 of us as guests, not to mention all the people we know who we'll warn off from this non-family-friendly arrogant establishment. The fact that the server was going off like this to 2 guests is beyond me. They all seemed to agree though, that hipsters and rich b*&ches are a bad thing.... apparently bringing in money is a bad thing.... IDK

I found the best beer here! I didn't even know Game of Thrones beer was still available to purchase. I wish we could have stayed for lunch.

I grew up with a Mr. D's in the Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville. I was pleasantly surprised to find one in Volusia County Mall when we first visited here more than 20 years ago and now that I live here it's great to have a place to purchase specialty beers. They have some very limited brews and hard to find bottles in stock. For example, Goose Island Bourbon County usually has folks lined up when released and most places sell out in a day. Well, they had few bottles just sitting on the bar on display. They also have at least three bottles of Utopia on the shelf. Wow! I've never seen Utopia in person and they have three vintages for sale. Their food is good too. I usually get the New Yorker and then pick up a few treats from the deli counter before leaving.

A Teutonic oasis in an well aged mall. Good German deli equipped with numerous beers. Great place to hunker down while one's significant other shops in the mall and drink beer. Rubens are very good accompanied by their mini potato pancakes are excellent. Been the same since the early eighties went I went here with my dad as mom shopped at Burdines. Also has a fully stocked deli case where you can stock up on land jäger and various other deli delights.

Stumbled upon this place one rainy afternoon when stuck in the mall. Great food, fantastic beer, awesome cheese and meat selection...In a mall! Definitely a "hidden gem". I recommend this place highly for those afternoons when you are rained out of beach activities and want delicious food and craft beer.

Great atmosphere however thin walls to cooks audible bs of the day. Had deli plate which crackers and bread was tasted and interesting but the thin salami and American and Swiss cheeses also thin sliced I can make at home from publix deli! The hot cider was delicious and the Bavarian cream puff was quite alright. I will go again and hopefully get some kind a really great sandwich or some Great veal and then adde a bunch of stars which I was hoping to do but with that deli sampler plate Im sorry three stars is the very top-of-the-line I can give. Let's hope next visit rocks?

They weren't very busy and the server was indifferent, curt, and unhelpful. The food was average (the rueben wasn't as good as a deli in va beach I frequent) and the bratwurst was a hot dog...seriously? Come on. The sauerkraut was decent though. The beers were also decent. I wouldn't recommend this to a friend though.

Their Reuben is the best that I've had in the Daytona area hands down! Potato pancakes are crispy and flavorful. Adorable atmosphere with hundreds of bottled beers to try!! You can even buy a basket and fill with tons of international goodies. This place is fabulous!!

It must have been about, jeez, 14 years ago that I was first taken to Dunderbaks. Ever since then, if there is a mall trip planned, there are ALWAYS beers at Dunderbaks after. I never thought one could find something so fantastic in the Daytona Mall (or any mall I guess) but this place is the real deal. One of the first places I'd found potato pancakes on the menu (delish) and the beer selection is fantastic. Solid Reuben too... it's been awhile since I've been back, but it's comforting to now this place is still here and doing well.

I work near the Volusia Mall and was pumped to find this place. A German style deli with an amazing craft beer selection! If you're looking for a great craft beer selection pop into this little place. Not sure if you can get your beer to go to walk around the mall. Will have to ask next time.

Great little place to stop in and eat while in the mall shopping. They have a great selection of sandwiches and are all very good! You can purchase food items to take home as well as meats and cheeses. The staff are all very friendly!

Mr. Dunderbak's is one of my favourite lunch places, and a unique little place to boot. It is a lovely haven in our bland local mall. As a matter of fact, I think the only reason I have been to the Volusia mall in years is to walk through the Sears entrance to get to Mr. Dunderbak's, because at that point it's only about a 5 second walk to the location and you can bypass all the distasteful mall nonsense. All of their sausages are wonderful, and their potato pancakes are quite nice (though I suspect they changed the recipe or the supplier because they seem to be less onion-y now). My youngest sister swears their mozzarella sticks cannot be beat, and my constant dining companions loves all of their sandwiches - the Das French Connection (ham, brie, croissant) being his absolute favourite. They have all sorts of excellent beers and the servers/proprietors are very knowledgeable if you have any questions. Which we did, at our latest visit. On the beer menu, they offer something called an "infusion", which aroused our curiosity. The explained it was something they added to their menu a year or so ago and was popular at the time due to the novelty but has since died down to nothing and they will probably be removing it from their offerings. There are certain combinations of flavorings - chili, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, etc. - that they will infuse into your choice of beers to enhance the flavoring, add new dimensions and nuances and so forth. My companion ordered a Guiness + a chocolate infusion which he claimed was rather delicious. Myself, I had a diet soda. Which brings me to the main reason this is one of my preferred area restaurants... THEY HAVE THE BEST ICE! No really, they do. I am not one of those people who says "no ice, please". I want my drink to be as cold as possible, and their ice is of the shaved/chipped variety and it makes for the most refreshing beverage imaginable. I doubt that's a selling point for many folks, but it takes all kinds, now doesn't it?

The place to go for German food and beer in Daytona !!! Friendly staff usually knows quite a bit about the different beers and are willing to help you pick one you like . Everything I have tried off the menu has been excellent!!

Great sandwiches, lots of delicious choices from the German-style Deli and a wild assortment of exotic beers from around the world. Dunderbak's is a neat place to have breakfast, lunch or just a quick meal and/or a beer. The place has been drawing me back like a magnet for the past few years every time I'm in the area. Owner Ted and his knowledgeable staff will be happy to suggest some of the latest new arrivals or specials. I try a new one each time I go and because new ones are constantly being added, I seriously doubt that I will ever get to sample all of them.

Great place to eat at the mall. My family eats here all the time. I also buy cases of wine due to there great selection and prices. Beer and wine tastings are well attended.

Is a deli-bar-restaurant with average food in the Volusia Mall. The menu has many different sandwich choices but not many dinner choices. You can either sit at the bar or at a table but the tables are packed in tight. You may have to wait to exhale when the person directly behind you inhales. When busy it can be loud because of this. If you can see it, they will sell it to you, baskets, signs, deli items, candy everything. But when buying food look for the dates. Bought candy bit into it and spit it right out, looked at the date - over two years old....just nasty. You should be able to find a coupon on-line.

The only place of its kind around the area and it has been here for a long time. Great food, great beer. Everyone loves this place.

  • Jacquelyn K.

This is a strange place to explain because they seem to have taken a bar, a wine cellar, a general store, a gift shop, a deli, and a german restaurant and crammed them all into the tiniest space in the mall.... that being said, it somehow turned out excellently as all of those things at the same time! You've got to just check it out. They have beer and wine tastings every so often that are a lot of fun.

Decent food, arrived fast. Jager Schnitzel was a bit small and good, not great. I prefer a creamy gravy as opposed to the Hunter's gravy served here, which is basically a Mushroom Au Jus. Fries and Potato Pancakes were perfect. Had a bottle of Bitburger for $4.79 and a Flight of Beer for $7.49 (4 drafts of my choice, 5 oz. each). Combined with the Trivial Pursuit cards, not a bad dinner.

Talk about a selection of beers! Boy, they have almost anything you can think of. This is the only place in Daytona that I could find to buy Tucher Helles Hefe Weizen (my favorite beer of all time). I ended up buying 12 of the 13 bottles they had - only because I couldn't carry anymore..lol.. This place reminds of my favorite place in the whole world - European Street Cafe. If you're in Daytona, I would highly suggest popping in for a few beers, as long as you can handle rubbing elbows with people - this place IS tiny! **UPDATE** Ok, I just had to edit my review. I should really give this place 5 stars because one of the Managers, Ted, ordered a case of Tucher Helles Hefe Weizen. I emailed Ted and told him I'd be in town for the 2010 Daytona 500. Within a week, Ted had ordered a case of Tuchers for me, which I picked up the morning of the race (2/14/10). THANKS TED!!!

I've been having lunch at Mr. Dunderbak's for over 20 years now.... always the same. The waitstaff WILL initially ignore you. Tough it out, they'll be nice once they're ready. And the food is really quite good for a hole in the wall.... the menu is extensive.... their German Hot Dogs are the BEST.... try a rueben dog, YUM. And without fail their schnitzel is the bomb. Great beer selection, both on tap & to go, cider included. Lots to look at while hanging and extensive German grocery section. I consider worthly of a visit.... PROST!

I love Mr Dunderbak's, it's a very cool location with lots of neat things available for purchase. Usually get the cajun dutchmen, smoked brat, or black russian. I moved out of FL a couple years ago and this restaurant is literally the only one in the entire Volusia area I even miss.

Ok, so when you walk in, it looks like it's gonna be good. There are tons of German imported items all over and beers galore. We sit down and look at the menu. The beer prices were way too high. Minimum of $5.99 for a bottle of American beer up to about $8.50. Not really worth it when you can get a 6-pack for $8 at the liquor store. Then we notice the food menu, extensive as it is, is almost entirely American food items(with lame German sounding names.) There were a handful of German sausages and Shnitzel, but that was it for the actual German food. I had the Bavarian bratwurst and my girl had the Knockwurst, both were lackluster. We had to pay an additional 1.59 to substitute the german potato salad for a side of Kraut. The potato salad was obviously canned and therefore not that great. The rest of the menu consisted of things like pizza burgers and Mexican burgers, typical unhealthy American fare. Pretty lame that this is the only German restaurant within a 40 mile drive of Palm Coast. Never coming here again.

Awesome selection if beers. They even have Dogfish 90 minute here. Had a great sandwich. Can't believe this place is in a mall.

When I lived here as a teen, just having moved from Germany, I would crave anything even closely resembling German stuff. When this place opened up, I was in heaven. I was able to get my cold cuts and other German food items. On top of that my parents and I befriended the owners and their young adult children, one of which was often in my secret sexual fantasies when I was still little nerdy closeted homosexual. (big grin)

This place is out-freakin-standing. Their selection is fantastic, the food is always a hit and a lot of it is home made. Good service. Competitive prices. Spent 5 years in Germany and this place really made me feel like I was at home again. Highly recommended!

Although this place is in the mall and although it is VERY cramped in side, it is where I dream about when I dream of Rubens. I have never had better. I also really enjoyed the potato pancakes. It is awkward to eat there with more than one other person in your party, but its worth it. It also has a cool shop in the restaurant where you can get deli meats, wine and condiments from Germany.

MANY years ago ('70's-80's) this was a great chain restaurant located in many Florida Malls. This Volusia Mall location is the only one I've seen in quite a few years and it looks just like the ones I remember, with a long long bar, a few small tables and a German deli with meats and sausages. It's quite unique relative to the decor (very funny and entertaining signs to read while you wait, lots of overhead baskets and such) and the deli has items that, from what I understand, are hard to find elsewhere. I used to love their sandwiches which came with piled high meat on a thick bun like a brioche or egg roll. They once offerred a Westphalian Ham w/Cream cheese sandwich (much better than it sounds), and a roast beef, among others. Evidently they have decided to now only use regular thin white sliced sandwhich bread or croissants (which really aren't compatible with the type sandwiches they offer). They no longer sell the ham sandwich but do offer the roast beef. Unfortunately on the regular sandwich bread it taste like something I could easily make myself at home. For the price of the sandwich, it is a disappointment. You get the feeling they just aren't trying any more, or maybe expect to make all their $ on the alcohol and deli. Bring back the great bread and creative sandwiches please!!

I love coming to Mr. Dunderbak's when I'm in the area. Mr. Dunderbak's used to be a nationwide chain that had a location near my home in the Washington DC area, but many disappeared and the ones that are left seem to be continuing on via passionate owners. This particular location is very long and narrow and has a bar that feels like it's about 100 feet long. However, that adds to the character of the place as it helps you forget you're in a shopping mall. This place has a TON of items for sale including German deli items, canned and jar food items, mugs, decorations, toiletries, Haribo gummi everything and more. I'm not sure how German the menu really is, but the food is delicious and reasonably priced including sandwiches and various fork & knife items and German combination platters. The beer selection is awesome and you can order beer from all around the world. The service is great and they really make you feel like a valued customer and friend. And being a hygiene freak, I like the way the men's room has a touch-less device where you just wave your hand in front of it, and the door opens.

Food and beer are still excellent but the waitstaff needs replaced or given a major attitude adjustment.
