Be prepared to pay a lot for a little. We recently had breakfast here after a staycation getaway to the hotel. Did the breakfast buffet and it was just OK. The selection is OK but the price is ridiculous for what you get. The rest of our meals were outside the hotel and much better.

I'm glad I didn't listen to the previous reviews bc my parents really wanted to try this place. The food was fresh with lots of seafood options including crab legs, shrimp, mussels, paella, prime rib, chicken, stuffed fish, sushi and huge dessert bar. I think a normal person wouldn't be disappointed. Would go back but make sure u get the valpack coupon which brings the price down to $30. Worth it.

Comment is on the breakfast since I decided not to do the dinner here per the reviews. Nice view and decent selection on the buffet but the omelet chef was not good. Cannot cook eggs to order and the omelet my wife got was undercooked big time. Will not return despite being a diamond member and it is free for us!

The seafood buffet is my favorite. The brunch is excellent as well. I have never had a bad meal here and the service is great. I highly recommend eating here if your in the Daytona Beach area. The hotel and view of the beach gives this restaurant a perfect setting for any occasion.

I've been to Doc Bales' for breakfast a number of times while staying at the Hilton. The previous reviews have scared me off from trying dinner! The breakfast buffet is actually pretty good with all of the things you'd expect including a nice selection of fresh fruit. The omelette station is nice and has all of the ingredients for a killer omelette. The cook always cooks them properly and they are tasty. Unfortunately, the service is consistently bad. Now, I don't look for much at a buffet: keep my coffee and water glass full, clear my plate and bring me my check promptly. They miss the mark on everything except the coffee (and the only reason they get that right is that they leave a pot on your table.) You generally wait for some time for a server to take your drink order and then rarely see her again. For a $20 breakfast, I really do expect better...

Horrible service! Long wait for breakfast orders. Waited over 30 mins and still no food. And we had ordered first thing in morning too at 7am. I do not recommend this place at all. We spoke with front host and they said "you should have ordered the buffet!" We asked for the manager to be sent around and we were told he's the short guy walking around somewhere. He never showed up at our table. Not a friendly restaurant for hotel guests and it is certainly not customer service focused. This is appalling for a Hilton property.

Bad bad bad. Overly expensive, minimum selection, & misleading on "seafood buffet". False advertisement to the max. It should be reviewed as "crab legs & shrimp & clams buffet". For the amount of $40 per person I was holding out for something more extravagant, especially since it's in the Hilton. Upside: I extremely enjoyed the apple pie there at the end for dessert. Note: If you do decide to eat here and discover you don't appreciate the food - don't take it out on the staff. I've witnessed a couple verbally attacking their waitress for the quality of the buffet. She doesn't cook the food nor decide the menu. Take a look around inside the buffet room before you decide to eat here or not.

Please save yourself the time and money. This restaurant is horrible. The atmosphere is like being in a cafeteria. We had the dinner buffet (there was no other option - no dinner menu on a Friday night), four people, the bill was $180 and the food was terrible.

Went it the Dinner buffet in May. We used the restaurant .com certificate. The prime rib was good but the seafood crab legs weren't great. They were the small crab clusters that weren't anything to rave about. The peel and eat shrimp weren't great either. Salad bar was decent. Cost is high for what you are getting. My husband did like the bread pudding on the dessert bar.

I gave 4 stars because I've obly been for breakfast and breakfast is hard to mess up. The service and food were both excellent! I'm not sure why there's so many bad reviews. Maybe I went on a good day?

SAVE YOURSELF! While Doc Bales' Grill may seem like the only decent place to eat on the Beach, looks are deceiving. BLAH. The food is not worth wasting calories over. I ate at Doc Bales three times and each time my tummy said NO! Too greasy, too tasteless, too trying too hard to be too many things. If you are looking for real food in Daytona go towards Beach Street.

Went there for breakfast. Decent buffet. If I didn't have a free voucher, I don't know if I would have paid $20. But, it had an omelet bar, fresh fruit, cold cuts, and the usual eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes.

Total crap. My meal was inedible, luckily the salad I ordered was ok but my meal was terrible. We also had very bad service. I know we came in late (about 8:30pm) but why would you be open if you aren't prepared to actually serve people? We waited a very long time to order drinks and for drinks to arrive and then to order food and get our food, it was almost a 2 hour process. For salad I ordered the tomato salad which was all right. The tomato was a little underripe but not bad. The others at the table ordered the wedge which they loved. For meal, I ordered the portabello sandwich which came on a cibatta bun that the bottom was completely soaked with water so you couldn't pick it up. The top of the bun was so hard that you couldn't tear it or bit into it. So I tried eating it with a fork/knife and the mushroom was so rubbery and the cheese on top made it so greasy that I couldn't take another bite. It came with a side of sweet potato fries which were undercooked/cold. I needed ketchup but couldn't find anyone around to ask for it but then when I got up to get some that I saw across the room a woman ran out to see what I needed. Someone else at my table ordered a chowder which had no flavor so she asked for some red pepper flakes to help. And the other person ordered something that she had off the room service menu which the waiter wasn't sure if they could even make so he had to bring the chef out to discuss because he didn't understand what she was asking for. Overall a total waste of time, would have been better grabbing some fast food off the street or ordering room service.

Good breakfast buffet with made to order omlets, fresh fruit and berries. Pricey, but good.

A group of us were staying at the Hilton for a convention last week. We went to Legend's sports bar in the lobby to decide what to eat. The Doc Bales menu looked good... it was OK. It wasn't worth the prices IMO though. I had Paeilla, which was $27. It did have some good scallops, and a fair amount of shrimp and mussels, but the rice, the center piece of Paeilla, was just not up to par. It was greasy, and there was no Paeilla crust. So basically it was just mediocre saffron rice with seafood sprinkled about. Had it been $18, I probably wouldn't have minded as much, but to charge a premium for that dish is absurd. Another in my group had the Chicken Marsala, and she liked it enough to get it again on Friday night. We were able to eat at Legends bar, which was nice, because the bartenders in Legends are friendly are helpful. We ate there again on Friday night because it was supposed to be a seafood buffet, this one for $33. It was ok. It might be worth it if you were really into snow crab and boiled shrimp, but I find those two to be low examples of seafood. Give me blue crab, and perfectly grilled shrimp anyday. I would not eat here again. If I were at Legends again, I'd probably order off the bar menu.

I suspect the Hilton Family wouldn't be caught dead in this restaurant. And if the Hiltons wouldn't dine in their own restaurant, neither should you.

I ordered salad with salmon, with the salad dressing on the side (well, that was a good idea!). First of all, how wrong can you go with salad dressing, with all the oil and all that? Don't they taste this thing before they bring to the customer? It was extremely salty, and I could barely eat 1/3 of it. Salmon is all other story. I can swear that the salmon was pre-frozen. It is so irritating that you are sitting there at the restaurant, looking at the ocean and eat frozen fish!

So it was BikeToberFest 2009. We stayed in a room at the Hilton and we thought, why not! We'll try the seafood buffet. Here are the reasons why you should spend your money elsewhere: 1. Service was slow -- our waitress, Casey, had the majority of the tables alongside the beach view. That was approximately 16 tables. She was very 'flighty' and seemed either 'ditzy blonde' or not experienced enough to handle many tables. 2. Her busser, Francois, was very slow to respond to Casey's needs. We heard her ask Francois to help her with a few things, as we were in earshot of several of her requests to him. He disappeared only to return approximately 6-8 mins later to help with only one of the many requests for assist. 3. The "Seafood Buffet" leaves much to be desired. At almost $40 a person, there should have been more selections for the event to be called a 'seafood buffet.' 4. Peel and Eat shrimp was over-cooked. Short of being 'shoe leathery' in texture, the shrimp left much to be desired. We saw alot of folks eating the shrimp, but for us shrimp lovers, its no small feat to peel all of those shrimp, only to bite into a very chewy meat. Please remove these from the seafood buffet! 5. No Sweet Tea! This restaurant is located in the South! Sweet Tea is a staple! 6. Only starch on the buffet line was seasoned potatoes. They tasted like mashed potatoes, but wouldn't you rather have mashed potatoes? or rice pilaf, or shrimp and grits? OH, wait....no shrimp scampi either.... OK, so enough of sticking in the knife and twisting it....there was one good thing about the seafood bar: The crab legs required absolutely no work, except to go to the seafood bar to get them and bring them back to the table. Someone out there must've thought it a good idea to run these king crab legs thru a saw blade to shear them in half -- no work to get to the sweet crab meat! This was indeed the easiest steamed (flash frozen) crab legs we've ever eaten! So much for $40 a person...me thinks you should go elsewhere and eat on $40 a day, like Rachel Ray does.

I stay at the Hilton each year for 5 weeks for my job. Upon checking in I am always given vouchers for the breakfat buffet at Doc Bales. I usually go once just to see if it still sucks and sure enough it sucks each time. They normally charge like $18 for this buffet and it is total crap!!! My co-worker ordered scrambled egg whites and when The "chef" went to pour them into the pan they were frozen soild!!! Yuck this place is awful!!
