A must eat at place! This is where the locals go. The place packs out be fore-warned! Great food! This is definitely your Grandparents hangout. The place is clean, yet old. I would rather have awesome breakfasts from here than a newly renovated, themed out restaurant that can't afford to serve good food. We come up to Daytona a few times a year and we eat breakfast here every morning. Again as I said before this place has great food and great service!

Very good food for a very reasonable price. Service was good and breakfast is served promptly. Don't expect fancy...it's an old-school diner and locals fill it up, which also says something for it! Also - plan to pay cash.

I love this place. I've been coming here with my parents on Saturdays for the past 7 or 8 years. They have some of the best blueberry pancakes you will ever have. They make a mean veggie omelet also. My family is never disappointed with the food and the servers are great and know everyone personally. Best brunch spot in Daytona!

Bertie's has the BEST Reuben I've ever eaten, bar-none. The guy who bought the restaurant a few years ago is a CIA-trained chef, and although he's not there every day, his mark has indelibly been stamped onto both the breakfast and lunch-time food. I used to try a different breakfast entree every time I went (which is virtually every morning when we vacation in Daytona), but then one day I tried the Reuben... and now it's virtually the only thing I order. I don't know whether the chef makes his own corned beef and sauerkraut or not, but it sure does taste like it. The corned beef is melt-in-your-mouth tender and perfectly flavored, and the kraut is not too acidic and perfectly complements its partners in the sandwich. I've never been there for a dinner, but breakfast and lunch can't be beat. Stop by when you're in Daytona... you won't be sorry!

My wife and I are regulars for breakfast on weekends and an occasional lunch. Food is great and so is the service. Betty and Audrey are wonderful servers and take care of you. Omelettes, pancakes, grits, hash browns are all great. Hamburgers and turkey Rachel are favorites of ours at lunch and always good. The weekend dinner food quality is outstanding but it loses something with a diner atmosphere. Upgrade the booths! If you want to try dinner call to be sure they are really open during posted hours. We were denied service last night by the owner when we entered before posted closing hours!! Does the customer really matter? I still recommend them-not many places with quality at a reasonable price.

I have to admit that I enjoy breakfast. At Berties I was not disappointed. The Spanish omelet was great and the Blue berry pancake was full of the berries. The home fried potatoes had great taste! I must admit that my wife and I split all this delicious breakfast. Also another review helped us find Berties to left of the Publix market in the corner. We both recommend it! They only open for breakfast and lunch except for Thursday and Friday evening when they have gourmet dinners.

Whoa so many 5 star ratings? I do not agree to that because my breakfast experience there was not as I expected. The good thing first, the coffee was nice and strong. I ordered a breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs, hash browns and bacon. A fellow reviewer said that the burrito is big enough for two people but I hardly agree to that. It was not even enough to feed one person but that is just my opinion. Regarding the taste it was pretty bland. No traces of any spice but it was drenched in fat. A rather messy experience. Btw, tha place apparently changed name it is now called Berties Good Eats, poor Bertie...good eating is something else.

Geat place for breakfast. We ordered biscuts & gravy and croissant cristo. To say it was good would be an understatement. It was one of the best b & g my wife has had in a long time, not salty at all. My cc was really good and filling. Definitely we'll be back.

Very poor service... Our breakfast was pretty cold... Very old decor and in my opinion dirty... I'm not going back... Sorry

Food is good, price is fair and service is friendly. I ordered spinach, mushroom and cheese omelet and side of bacon... .I appreciate it was served bland (not a salt fan) & the bacon was crisp

Very good breakfast. Seems to attract older locals. A little hard to find, tucked away in back corner to the right of Public shopping center next to the pet shop. I would come here again.

Loved the food, but my husband ate a bite of raw chicken there (defrosted frozen chicken nuggets not cooked all the way through) and was extremely sick for several days.

The secret is the Cristo Croissant. The turkey was thick sliced and fresh, accompanied by a generous slice of slice of Swiss. The croissant was flaky and tasty. Very good! Unfortunately, the omelette portion was that in which you leave hungry. The biscuits and gravy were mediocre. The ambiance is that of what you'd expect from a small mom and pop brunch place. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

If u like quiet, this is your place! If u love geriatrics, go eat at bertie's! It Is a small little place in publix shopping center. The staff is a 5-star exceptionally friendly and at your service! (the old ladies look like they've been working there for 40 years!) they aren't very flexible about substitutions. I am gluten free but they wouldn't sub my toast for anything else. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfect! Bacon is served crispy, coffe isn't the best. In the empty booth next to us, a woman in her late 80's sits down and her booth was wobbly so she's rocking it back and forth with her body and says "oh my, this bench moves! I'm moving! I don't want to end up on the ground!" then proceeds to move one table over. If u love old people, it was really cute. Another old lady was celebrating her birthday there. For $11.99 + tip, we got a bunch of simple, home cooked food that was served with a smile! I see now why the locals come here, it's like being at home! I would go back.

Poor service, as well as portions for birds. Cream sitting out on table for how long no one knows. Biscuit and gravy disgusting and taste like plastic. Asked for hot sauce and they bring Frank's red hot wing sauce really!! Not a very good place of your hungry. Carpet is gross, food on the walls.

There's nothing better than waking up hungover after a long night of drinking than going to Bertie's. It is the best remedy for any kind of morning and the place will immediately lift your spirits. It seems like the same people are here every day reading the newspaper and conversing with the waitresses. If you come often enough, the waitresses will get to know your usual meal. And Bertie is the nicest lady behind the old time cash register, still going strong btw. My recommendations are: breakfast burrito, any omelette, the pancakes are huge, cinnamon toast, and getting a side of hash browns is a must. Breakfast is pretty cheap and comes out quickly. Best brunch in town, hands down.

It has been a while since my last review of Bertie's, so I feel obligated to update my review. My wife and I enjoy exceptional dinners at Bertie's 2-3 times each month. We often bring friends or family to share our special restaurant. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing special about the location (Bertie's is a diner by day), but t doesn't matter whether it's gourmet burger night, prime rib night, New Year's Eve, or Valentine's Day the food is always exceptional.

Fantastic breakfast! Great price! Sweet and attentive staff!! Sausage gravy was delicious with just a slight kick. I got the single biscuit helping so I could order more. Waitress recommended the link sausage. I'm more of a bacon boy, but opted to go with her recommendation. Each bite exploded in my mouth with delectable, fatty deliciousness!!!! I finished off my breakfast with hash browns, crispy please. They were delivered to the table as requested. Nothing extraordinary, but I do love crispy hash browns. We almost left when we arrived because of the big No Credit Cards sign. We weren't going to leave for hood, just long enough to get some cash. They stopped us, explaining when the chef is in he's able to submit a charge on his phone. This he did very graciously. Bertie's will become a breakfast mainstay when in Daytona.

We just went to Berties this morning and we were very disappointed. Whenever we travel we like to go to local places, avoid chains and get a taste of local cuisine and see where the local folks go. Based on the reviews we were expecting a lot, and there were a few locals there, which is always a good sign. Unfortunately, our server did not understand that calling people "honey" is not the same as being friendly. She did not make us feel welcome at all to the place. We thought "ok, maybe it is just their style here", but the food was not good. My wife ordered a sandwich and the bread came completely burnt. Same thing for the toast that came with my omelette. The food lacked seasoning. The only good thing was this sweet lady behind the counter, she seems to be in her 80's and was as sweet as she could be. We had a restaurant.com coupon and we had showed to our server who told us "just show her when you pay and she will take it off your bill". She did not know what to do with the electronic coupon, and she asked the server if she knew what to do to validate the coupon and this server was flat rude to this 80-year old lady "don't know nothing about it!". I was literally shocked. I am glad we were out of that place and won't come back there ever again.

I loved!!! The filet was amazing.. it was only on dinner menu, but the owner (chef) made it for my husband.. He used some some special mushroom that words can describe. And as we finished, her wife brought us some DELICIOUS cheesecake.. And just for u guys to know, I'm not a cheesecake lover, so it was really good. When I return to Daytona, I'll go back to Bertie's ...///// Resraurante incrível, peça pelo filé mignon com um tipo especial de cogumelo e finalize com o maravilhoso cheesecake deles.

Good food. Reasonable prices. They don't accept credit cards. I got western omelette, wife corned beef hash/French toast, daughter had the croissant cristo. Kind of tucked away from main drive. We would come back!

A geriatric hangout, but a good thing. This place has been around forever (though apparently at another location) at it appears as though most of the cliental have been too. Around Forever. But the food was good (especially pancakes) and the service was quick and to the point. Would totally do again.

Was staying at La Playa resort across the street & wanted a good breakfast near by and I definitely found that here! Staff was friendly & service was quick. I had the crossaiant cristo sandwich & it had excellent flavor! Great little diner, just a heads up it's cash only so plan accordingly

Perfect short order restaurant. You can tell its a popular local spot, but they were very welcoming of our touristy-selves ... Kids included. Had to order an extra round of pancakes for the kids bc they are "the best ever".

Based on our pre-trip food reconnaissance, Bertie's was initially high on our list of breakfast spots thanks to the positive reviews and popularity with locals. Unfortunately, Bertie's, while good, did not live up to expectations (particularly since we went to Peach Valley Cafe earlier in the week). Location-wise, Bertie's is easy to find, sharing a convenient strip mall location next to a major landmark (Publix grocery) with plenty of parking. Given that we came late morning mid-week (10a on Friday), we were seated right away in a booth near the back of the restaurant and received service promptly. The patrons consisted of mostly Octogenarians, with a few 20-somethings sprinkled in. Artwork on the walls consisted of photos of Bertie's over the years, dripping of nostalgia. The menu was as we expected, fairly simple diner-style breakfast food with options including breakfast sandwiches, a few omelettes, and stand-by's like biscuits & gravy. They have a lunch menu along the same lines of style and variety. Looking for something with some flare, I ordered the Corned Beef Omelette with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, a side of hash browns, and coffee. The coffee was very good -- strong and flavorful. Regarding my food, I was pretty disappointed. I can only assume that the waitress misheard my order, because instead of hash browns, I received hash blacks; way overcooked and, well, burnt. When the menu claimed that the onions would be caramelized, I expected such -- instead, diced onions were seemingly thrown into the omelette midway through cooking and were barely softened, let alone caramelized. The corned beef was good, but there was either (a) way too much of it or (b) not enough eggs, as the omelette barely held together -- and did so mostly with the help of cheese. In my opinion, it would have been much better to add more egg, and possibly add a fluffing agent (e.g. pancake batter) to make the eggs more prominent. My meal also came with two pieces of toast which were also overcooked, but not to the extent of the potatoes. My wife ordered the Ham, Egg, and Cheese Croissant Breakfast Sandwich, a side of hash browns, and a large chocolate milk. Her sandwich was very good; the croissant was a great combination of light, buttery, and flaky, the ham was grilled, and the cheese provided a welcome creaminess to the sandwich. Her hash browns were also well overcooked, but not to the extent of mine; they were at least still a dark shade of brown, but she commented that they tasted burnt. Wanting to sample more of the menu, we also split a half order of biscuits and gravy. For some reason, it did not come out with the rest of our food (the waitress said "it looked funny" and she had the cook remake it) and instead trailed behind by 10 mins. No huge deal since it was not our main order. Once they arrived, they were very good (surprisingly so after my experience above); the gravy was thick and creamy; LOTS of butter and cream used in the roux. The sausage had a good flavor of sage with complimentary red pepper flakes in the gravy. Good, but VERY heavy. Probably too heavy to be a stand-alone entree, but that's just my opinion. My daughter had her stand-by order of scrambled eggs and pancakes. The eggs were nothing special, but her pancake was enough to make me jealous. It was golden brown and very dense; a hearty meal. The batter had a surprisingly piquant flavor without syrup; our best guess was that the batter had cinnamon or nutmeg (or both) in it. Good stuff. All in all, Bertie's was OK, but could have been much, much better. Simple diner food for a reasonable price (our bill was under $40 with tip) with a "grandmother's house" feel, but nothing was good enough to bring us back for another visit. When in town again, we'll likely go back to Peach Valley Cafe if we go anywhere for breakfast.

Meh - not as good as I expected. We ordered a burger and a Reuben. I could have made a better meal at home. The service was friendly but the quality of food just wasn't up to par. Maybe it's a better place for breakfast...

Great food, in a really peculiar place. I don't think there is a member of the staff under 90 years old, and I didn't see a customer under 70. But the food was good. The praline pancake was "slap yo mamma" good! I wish they had real coffee creamer, instead of the cheap non-dairy crap.

  • Beachy K.

It's just ok. Egg and cheese burrito wasn't great. Pancakes were dry and gritty. Home fries were pretty good. Veggie omelette was kind of gross. The sausage was the frozen patty kind. I've had much better breakfast elsewhere- NJ diners have spoiled me!

  • Kim W.

I believe I ate at their original locations years ago. We recently had lunch there, since I had heard and read a lot of positive things about them. I had a turkey rueben, and it came with fries. I was surprised that the turkey was sliced off the bird. It was not deli meat. That was a big plus. The sandwich was delicious and greasy. The fries were nice and crisp. No complaints. My husband also enjoyed his chicken philly with fries. The service was friendly and grandmotherly. I swear everyone there is way past retirement age. I would like to try their special dinners that are offered a couple of times a week. You can get on their email list, if you want more information about the changing menus.

Bertie's is a Daytona Beach institution, a no-frills yet very tasty lunch and breakfast spot tucked away in the far corner of a strip mall on A1A. (It's actually kind of hard to find: once you locate the mall itself, turn in the parking lot to face towards the Publix on the south side and then Bertie's is over in the corner as far to the right of Publix as possible). The food is simple, straight-forward, home-style Jewish-American luncheonette classics. The prices are fair and the portions are a good deal for what little cash they cost. If you're under sixty though you may feel like you're visiting grandma in the old folks' home: most of the loyal customers are senior citizens but the waitstaff will do a great job making you feel at home even if it's in fact your first visit. Despite the homespun nature of Bertie's breakfasts and lunches, I've heard (but not yet tried) the famed dinners that Chef Adam prepares on select nights. Apparently this humble little lunch spot is transformed into a grand experience then, and it's something I look forward to trying one day!

In a word AMAZING!!!!! Seriously the best kept secret in Daytona. so, only had been here for breakfast and lunch, until friends brought me to Bertie's on a Friday night. "But they are not open on Friday night, you say?" THATS WHAT I THOUGHT. Was I proved wrong! You have to call ahead . . . but imagine Beef Wellington, Baked Brie, Roast Duck, Lamb made to order and served 5 star style. Bring your own wine, there is no corkage fee. Only fine dining with love mixed in.

Although breakfast & lunch is an institution the real deal is the Friday night dinner! Three fabulous courses; including Duck or Rack of Lamb or Halibut. It's amazing food that makes you forget the surroundings?

They have the best Chili anywhere! I do not care for the service but the food is good! On weekends they have a french chef preparing dinner. The food is great but the service is horrible. I'd love to eat there more often but oh that service!

Don't let the exterior fool you. This is a fun, classic neighborhood diner. The food is very good, and reasonably priced. I had a cheeseburger... handmade patty, cooked just right. Wish we had a place like this near where I live

My husband and I were in Daytona Beach for a three-day stay and we ended up having breakfast at Bertie's on two of those days because the food is so damn good. The atmosphere of Bertie's kind of reminds me of a more low key version of the Seinfeld diner, except most of the patrons are over the age of 70. Really, the perfect place to hang out and have a nice meal. In the diner, you'll notice lots of old pictures, many of which seem to be photos of Bertie's from its earlier location -- very cool stuff. The prices are also incredibly reasonable and the food is absolutely delicious. The best thing to try is the biscuits and gravy -- the small is actually kind of huge. I asked to have my topped with two eggs over medium and this combination was among the best breakfasts I've ever had outside of my own home. Plus, the total for that combination was about $5. You really can't beat it.

The pancakes are HUGE...dinner plate size. Delish! Everything was good. The service was friendly. Only one drawback...no checks or credit cards...it's worth going to the ATM for cash.

Nice, people... I do not eat to many Reuben sandwiches, but this was a very solid one, good flavor, it comes with a huge plate of fries, looked tasty; but I got a side salad... A little weird place in a strip mall, but good...

I visit Daytona Beach frequently, and am always asking people for good leads on yummy restaurants. Bertie's came up again this week when I asked a store owner where there was good food, so my friend and I tried it yesterday for breakfast. We just loved our food. It's pretty plain in the decor dept, but if you want a nice honest breakfast with some of the nicest crispiest home fries you've ever had, look no further. I have also heard their brisket and cole slaw sandwich is great, and plan to try it soon. They have been in DB since 1971 and have old photos of DB dotting the walls of the restaurant. The wait staff are very genuine down home. For two egg breakfasts and coffee, we got out the door for $11.16 + tip. They also have a much more expensive dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, and you can bring your own wine. The chef went to a culinary school in Ny and from the looks of the dinner menu there is some good cookin' goin' on there. It's a great place for any foodie to check out.

everyone here is so nice and the food is just great. I knew about Bertie's for years before going. Most of my friends would skip school in high school and eat here, but I was too wimpy to skip. Now I'm 32 and would skip almost anything to go to Bertie's!

Bertie's is a local institution with a 40 something year history. Currently located (there've been other locations in the past) across Atlantic Ave. from the beach in a nondescript corner in one of the too-many strip shopping malls in Daytona/Ormond. While its known as a diner-esque venue for no-frills breakfasts and lunches, being outta-towners we went straight for their twice a week super-special dinner service courtesy of our "in the know" aunt. Menus are e-mailed every week, reservations made in advance, meals prepared with skill by Chef Adam. Chef Adam is the culinary institute trained son of Bertie's current owners. When they bought the place four or five years ago he asked to do dinners. A picture of his son (the owners' grandson) decorates the back wall of the joint, along with historic sepia tones of Bertie's storied past. While fine-dining and diner may not go hand in hand, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would definitely go again. Its hard to describe the juxtaposition. The ambience of a diner with the food of a Michelin multi-star and none of the pretense? The waitress treated us like family and, with superhuman speed and endurance, worked the entire restaurant mostly herself. Speaking of family it did seem, at times, that everyone in there was treated like the extended family of the owners as they worked the room and proudly gushed about their son's cooking. So, on to the food. The menu changes weekly depending on what's available and fresh. It is prix-fixed for entree, soup or salad and dessert. Appetizers are extra and, with no liquor license, wine is BYOB. Having previewed the menu we came prepared with a floral, chilled Torrontes sourced from First Crush on the other side of the bridge. Amongst the appetizers is a shrimp cocktail with green cilantro-based sauce and mammoth tiger prawns. As we went with the stone crab legs for our shared (an extra $5 gets you a split entree with individual soup or salad) dinner we opted for the baked brie instead. The puff pastry encrusted brie was soft and decadent, though the accompanying fruit based sauce (with citrus notes) was a bit sweet without counterbalancing acidity. Crunchy, not soggy chopped walnut (or pecans) were were a nice compliment to the sauce. We had both the shrimp bisque (served in a bread bowl) and the anchovie-topped ceasar salad. Both were excellent, and the bisque was flavorful and rich (perhaps a touch of saffron?) without being overtly creamy. For our entree we got 4 quite large stone crab claws. If you've never had them they are special and local to Florida, somewhat guiltless (they grow back) and quite tasty. With a mix of dark and light flesh they reminded us of our Maryland blue crab claws, but much bigger. Being crab, the meat was sweet and flaky, and though the size resembled a small lobster claw, not chewy or rubbery like lobster or shrimp. The crab legs were served refrigerator-cold, so there wasn't much to judge about the Chef's skills here, though the accompanying fennel-slaw, squash and spinach were delicious. For dessert we shared the Chef's own key lime pie and our thoughtful waitress brought us a fruit and cheese plate as well. There was more brie (which was over the top given our appetizer), some blue and maybe a bit of morbiere with a faint trail of ash, along with fresh melon and berries. They key lime pie was fantastic. Overall Bertie's dinner with Chef Adam is a great place to try, or as evident from the crowd, a place to come again and again.
