We are a huge fan of Tequila's. The chips and salsa are outstanding. The food is fantastic. The margaritas are huge! I like to try out my Spanish and the servers play along. We take visitors there when they are in town. The decor is old and dated, but we like to sit outside on the wooden benches and watch the world go by. I like this place and stop by when we are nearby.

One of our favorite go to spots! We bring family and friends here when they are in town! Steak Salad and Arroz Con Pollo are awesome!

Worst place. Ever. The parking is sketchy and not labeled. As soon as you walk in by the bar you can smell rotting. Something, not sure what. I noticed the place was poorly taken care and we walked out before the waitress could bring our waters back. She didn't care that I was leaving, and didn't seem concerned that it was because of the smell. Clean up!

Came here for lunch during work (so I couldn't try the huge, tasty looking margaritas), but the food was definitely below average. I ordered tacos. Just tacos. You'd think a Mexican restaurant would be able to perfect tacos. Not this place. My tacos barely had any meat in them and the minuscule amount of meat that was in them was infested with onions. I hate onions. Onions and I don't like each other. Bad stomach ache. I specifically told the server "plain". She never mentioned the onions in the meat. Pretty disappointing. The meat seemed cheap too. Just ground beef but every time I took a bite, a waterfall of grease dropped onto my plate. I was pretty grossed out. At $2 a taco, you should get better quality and higher quantity. The only good part of this lunch was the server's little helper. She was all about my Coke refills and never failed. And I desperately needed caffeine at that point of the day so it was much appreciated. Oh, and my menu had dried up crap on it. Not the best first impression. Won't be back for the food, but I may go back sometime to try the margaritas.

I ate here last week and this is my second time here. The margaritas were great and the chicken nachos just as good. No complaints so far and everyone was so friendly. Check this place out!

OK We LOVE the chips and salsa plus they have $1 tacos on Tuesday and 2 for 1 margaritas great deal for a cheap night out. The food is good but very American if you are looking for Mexican with lime and cilantro this i not it,

The place has a horrible smell of dinginess. The chicken nachos are horrible, if you are looking for good Mexican food. This is not the place. I have eaten in great Mexican restaurants in nyc, n j, and south beach. This place will never see me again. The waiter de la Cruz has no concern for the customer. If you are ever in jersey city try charritos awesome. This place should be knocked down and built from scratch. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE TRUST ME. I gave one star and I would even take that back. The waiter never asked me how was the food nor why I'm leaving the food and the leaving the restaurant. I told him that his way of treating a customer was wrong he did not even care he just bought the bill asked to be paid and even said sarcastically thank you for your comments. This guy should be washing dishing and even their I think he is a screw up......! This place SUCKS..!

Whenever I get that sudden, overwhelming urge for a girly margarita, I find myself here. Let's face it, it's hard to look tough while sipping a margarita through a straw. I do feel better now that my secret is out. Overall nice atmosphere, they have a decent bar area, indoor and outdoor seating. The complimentary salsa and chips are nice, and the service is ok. I generally just order ala carte, a burrito here, a taco there. Nothing has ever stood out, and I would not come here just for the food. It's not that it's bad, it's just that there's so many better Mexican restaurants in the area. It does have one thing that most of them do not though, and that's a full bar. Which brings me back to the margaritas. They're pretty good, but I'm not sure you can call 2 for 1 margaritas for $9 a great deal. Now that the weather is back in the 90's again though, expect to see me here more often for the cool, refreshing embrace of my tequila infused lime drink friends.

Not really bad but nothing special. I will not be going there again. Both my kids had grease running out of tacos.

My boyfriend and I stopped to get some margaritas. We were excited that it was walking distance from our condo. As soon as we walked in we noticed an intense urine/porta-potty smell. We sat down and ordered two margaritas which we didn't end up finishing because the smell was so bad. We had 3 different servers ask us what we would like to eat and we kept asking for our check. Would not go back.

Better than the reviews. Great service and although a 'common' fish the tacos were superb. Fresh, abundant cilantro and well prepared. Black beans very good. Try it!

Not bad for a couple to eat under $20. They got my order wrong the first go around. But the refills and chips never stopped. Staff was excellent. Good salsa. I got the lunch beef chimichanga and my husband got the #3 taco lunch. Both were tasty. The atmosphere was a little dirty and ran down, but like I said, the staff is what makes this place.

Very Unhappy. Food (Poor) - Chile Rellnos Poblanos Very Soggy and Greasy. - Chicken Chimanga was Soggy and Chicken was mushy - Chips and Salsa was good - Fajitas were so-so ( I personally didn't try them but others in groups had the steak) Drinks: Margarita were okay. Service and Atmosphere: Service was very Friendly but Very SLOW. & Atmosphere: Very Dirty.

  • Val C.

Service was mediocre. Server was young and not experienced in customer service or just horrible at it. Margaritas weren't consistent pours. That may sound weird but one was all mix and the other was strong. Food was ok.

Let me say that my intentions are NOT to get anyone fired.. We all have bills to pay...just a warning to other Mexican food lovers like myself. I should have read the reviews BEFORE my visit.. and now as I read I don't doubt that any of the bad ones are true.... I wonder how long the soap dispenser was empty in the ladies room before I told them it was when I first got there... MORE IMPORTANTLY I wonder IF the server that grabbed a chip and dipped it in the tub of salsa and are it in the back had used the bathroom WHILE the dispenser was empty. The place was dead so I am going to guess it was empty ALL DAY. Within 45 seconds she comes over to me at the bar with a menu and asks if I wanted chips and salsa. I said no. Told the bartender cancel my drink and tipped him ... For what it's worth no one was rude.... But clearly the place really is as dirty and awful as everyone says.. I just went to chilis... And I am really NOT a fan of Americanized Mexican food but I'm confident a corporate restaurant will not be as nasty. Sorry folks!

WORST SERVICE EVER! We went here for Cinco de Mayo and although we didn't expect speedy service we sat at our table for over 15 minutes after asking twice for our waiter before our order was taken, which had to be taken twice because our waiter didn't remember. We had to go to the bar to get our own drinks and re-ask for our queso after 20 more minutes, and then waited well over an hour for our food. After asking for our check after a total of 2 1/2 hours of never really being checked on we were brought the full bill with to-go boxes saying the food was "ready in the back" when they went to get our bill. Really? How convenient. Then my chicken was burnt and we weren't given tortillas! Tequilas has lost our business for sure!!

Lunch chimichanga was fast & tasty. Good service, under $10.00. Great lunch. Dont miss it, we go every time werr in the area...

I've come here a few times, always for my lunch break. The food and drink has always been mediocre at best. I come back because it's mostly cheap and the service is usually friendly. My most recent visit however will be my last. I decided to sit at the bar this time to avoid the heat and cigarette smoke. After waiting for over 5 mins. while numerous employees past me by, a nice man (I think a busser) helped me out and took my order. He was a bit confused as I didn't want the jumbo 2 for 1 margarita and only the 16oz. He also seemed hesitant with his pours and appeared to be reading a recipe. I watched as he put somewhat equal parts tequila, trip sec, Amaretto, and what I think was Mt. Dew into my glass. The flavor reminded me of one of those pineapple candy cane sticks you had as a kid - not what I was hopping for. I ordered tacos which were not great, but I didn't expect much for $1 ea. Elizabeth, tall Mexican woman, asked how I was doing and ultimately ended up being my server. I explained that the margarita was horrible and asked if she could fix it. She argued with me that that's how a margarita was made and sounded annoyed by me, she then dumped another shot of tequila in and said next time she's charging me for a double. At that point I had to laugh inside as to how bad her reaction was and the fact that I'm sitting in a Mexican restaurant and no one knows how to make a margarita. I began to write my review while still inside the bar and I think someone noticed because she came over to reconcile her previous actions and told me that maybe it's because I didn't order it right and next time to ask for less ice and extra margarita mix... Hahaha. As a former bartender, in a Latin restaurant no less, let me give you some tips, skip the OJ, skip the Ameretto, skip the Mt. Dew. Tequila, fresh lime, little sugar, tiny bit of trip sec if you're going cheap.. And for $6 don't tell me it's a cost thing! And clean up your attitude, like I said, as a service industry worker from the PNW, where tips are much bigger, you never know who your dealing with and you missed out on a nice consistent tip. Never again.

This place IS better than the reviews indicate. We love this place! The food is good, authentic Mexican food and the staff is exceptionally friendly and eager to please. We are originally from northern Colorado, where there is an abundance of great little "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants, and Tequila's makes us feel like we're back home. The warm chips & fresh salsa are always great, and we always order guacamole, enchiladas and chile rellenos - yum! We're not sure if our own kitchen would routinely pass a Health Department inspection, so we just enjoy our meal and we don't obsess about whether there is soap in the restroom dispensers, etc., as some reviewers have. Our food always delicious and we enjoy eating here - it's as simple as that. Consider it a trip to Mexico without leaving Florida.

  • Tracee N.

It smells awful inside! Like a septic/sewer/sulphur smell..couldn't be ignored. I don't know how they can ignore it! I just couldn't get past it to TRY to enjoy my food. Won't go back. Unless they fix whatever plumbing/sewer problem they have going on. Sorry!

Horrendous service. Our waiter was very quick at the start of the meal. . Ten minutes later, he was nowhere to found. It took us 30 minutes after our meal to get our check and leave. Pitiful.

I was hesitant to try this resturant as reviews were just OK! The food we tried was as good as any Mexican I've ever had. We eat a lot of Mexican! It was a Friday and I guess because of the location in the center of Clearwater it was not crowded! The decorations and furnishings did not give us a clue how good the food was going to be. We ordered a very good margarita. The queso and guacamole was very good! The dinners were way above average and close to the best I've ever had. The staff spoke with a heavy accent and it could be difficult for English speakers to follow. They could have not been nicer and followed up with us throughout the entire meal! Don't expect the trendy lines or decor that seems to define a "great place" these days! This is by far the best Mexican I've had in the twenty or more Florida Meixcan restaurants I've tried!

The worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to in my life! It is also a bit dicey looking with questionable sanitary conditions.... As soon as we walked in, I caught a glimpse of the kitchen area and was a bit concerned as it looked a bit grimy. However, some of the best Mexican food I have ever had has been in tacky, hole in the wall places so as long as the food quality supersedes the atmosphere, I am willing to give it a try. They don't even have a clue as to how to make a decent margarita. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I started out with the house version which was watered down and tasted like lemonade. Then I upgraded to a top shelf margarita with Patron silver and Grand Marnier and that was awful too! I have never visited a Mexican restaurant that didn't know how to prepare a top shelf margarita! And they had the audacity to charge $12.00 for this horrid concoction! To be fair, we tried a sample of a la carte Mexican basics. If a Mexican restaurant can't get the basics right, then don't try anything more complicated on the menu. The guacamole was fresh avocados mashed up, to their credit, but devoid of any spices. Not even fresh chopped onion. The chips and salsa were OK. The cheese enchilada was dreadful and tasteless. I have had better enchilada sauce out of an Old El Paso can from the supermarket. The chicken quesadilla, tacos and the refried rice and beans were barely passable. My partner did like the chili relleno but when I tasted it I thought it needed some spice. (He prefers milder food.) As far as the service, they are very short-staffed so I cannot fault the servers for being overworked. They did try their best as they were only two employees trying to accommodate the bar and the restaurant. Too bad because the location is good in downtown Clearwater. Between the lunch and happy hour crowd from the city offices and courthouse and the church traffic it could potentially be a successful business If they got their act together.

Great chips and salsa and we were able to bring our dog. On the flip side, our con queso dip was like water and the Margaritas had no alcohol in them. Good for a quick stop but don't expect greatness.

I went with a larger sized group (10 of us). The service was adequate to good. The food was adequate to mediocre. I had the chicken chimichanga--meh. The complimentary chips and salsa are a nice touch.

Delish! Nice happy hour too!!! the Tequilas Smothered Chicken was incredible!!!!!! Definitely a good place for lunch in downtown Clearwater.

My friend and I had drinks at the bar. Jesse served us. He was awesome. Very willing to make sure we got what we wanted, and were happy. We had chips and salsa. The salsa is delicious. It is made in house and has a nice bite. This was my first visit and I will totally be back and try some food ( reason why I didn't give 5 stars.)

Best Mexican food and service since leaving Texas 3 years ago! Only reason I did not give it another star is because I never gave anyplace five stars. We live in Tampa, and my wife and I plan to make a weekly 30 min trip to this great little restaurant.

Upfront - this is not the place for "traditional" Mexican fare. You won't find radishes on the plates, tacos without cheese, or exotic items like cabeza/lengua on here. It is, however, a great example of the large-portion, "Cheese and Sauce" Mexican food that I grew up with. My wife and I both ordered from the "pick 3" menu, she got tamales/enchiladas, I got a relleno, a small burrito, and enchilada. Margaritas were 2-fers so we each had one (3). My relleno was great, her tamales were great. We both were "so-so" on the enchiladas and my burrito was pretty soggy. The tortillas were very thick and pillowy, almost like the homemade ones from Tio Cabana on Drew Street. Our server was excellent and very nice, even enthusiastic to take care of us that evening. We ended up tearing through 3 massive margaritas while they kept our chip bowl loaded. My kid had chicken nuggets and some fried ice cream later. We will go back. There are plenty of places to get "traditional", but sometimes you need a "classic".

Food was yummy and authentic. We took a chance and were not disappointed. Chips and salsa were pretty good. I had the flautas and they were amazing. Husband ad the fish tacos and really liked them. Definitely recommend.

Spinach Chimichanga ! Every other mexican place says things like "we can't make one without meat" or "we can make it with onions and peppers". This place has the spinach chimichanga on the menu and it's good. Sit outside and enjoy the weather. Ignore the traffic and the smokers.

I feel like I'm being generous giving it two stars. When my girl friend and I pulled up on a Friday night we immediately noticed there were no cars. That should of been a red flag. At 745pm on a Friday we were one of three groups dining. All of the tables with chairs had the chairs on the tables. The booth were sat at had that sticky wood finish to it. The kind that feels like you can carve your name into it with your finger nail.. Drink specials were 2-4-1. The beer was around $5.50 and was huge. 24oz x2? The mixed drinks were a little cheaper and were on the weak side. Chips and salsa were excellent. I had the chimichanga dinner, she had the chicken fajitas. Mine was awful. Barely fried. Rice and beans were old. She liked her fajitas. At 830pm they began mopping right next to our table as we were the only customers left. Overall the staff were friendly. This place is obviously a lunch trap for the downtown Clearwater workers. I would never come here again.

  • Tina W.

I was very disappointed in this place. It is more Tex-Mex than traditional Mexican food. I like both kinds of Mexican food, so that was okay with me. However, the food was very bland... Everything tasted the same. Nothing special & I won't be back.

I was in Clearwater with my wife and some friends on a hot afternoon. We were craving Mexican food for lunch, but we're not from the area. I pulled out my trusty smartphone and checked out the Yelp app to see what was nearby (I love the monocle feature, btw). There were some Mexican restaurants close by, but they didn't have reviews nearly as positive as Tequila's. So we decided to walk an extra 7-8 blocks on a chance that this place would make it worth our while. I'm happy to say that we were not disappointed. We sat outside on the covered deck, sipping generously poured house margaritas. Then the food came, and it was just what we had hoped for. I also have to say that the service was excellent. Very friendly staff. Definitely give this place a try!

  • Chris B.

Still the same tired interior which needs more than a coat of paint to bring up to date but the food is actually pretty good. I had the carnitas and they were very good and prepared properly. The service, while expeditious, was not so great. The waiter seemed a little annoyed, not rude, but not nice. All things considered I would go back.

What a find! We have driven by many times and finally stopped and are we glad we did! The service was excellent, I have never had my drinks refilled so quickly, and the chips kept coming! My husband had shrimp that came with the freshest veggies I have ever seen at a restaurant, and he said it was the best shrimp he has had. The chicken burrito was loaded with chicken. Very satisfying meal. And wonderful prices! We will be back soon and often!

Great specials. I am a vegetarian , they do have vegetarian food but I find it a little greasy and bland. They do however have unlimited chips and salsa. The wait staff are great too! Service is wonderful! The staff here are real nice and attentive to the table. Huge menu!

  • Jennifer C.

Awesome authentic Mexican food! Salsa was soooo delish, reminded me of salsa we had in Old Town San Diego. The margarita was HUGE and good to the last drop. Our waiter was so friendly and fun and the owner even stopped by our table to make sure we were satisfied. Note: Don't park in the metered lot. They have a big free parking lot behind the building. We're going back for more margaritas tomorrow with a bigger group!

Food is the best inexpensive authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. Nothing fancy but great food. Agree it looks dated inside but don't go for the atmosphere. Service is fine but nothing to write home about.

Stopped Tequila's for an early supper with a guest, as I taste test every Mexican restaurant in Pinellas I can find (see my list below). Tequila's is a welcome addition to the downtown Clearwater Cleveland Street District. The restaurant is located near the courthouse in a building that has had a long line of tenants just since I've lived here not too many years, from Clearwater City Grill, to Harrison Grill & Bar, to most recently Smokin' Out BBQ. The decor hasn't changed much from any of those previous restaurants, save for some decorations on the wall. Service was very prompt throughout the meal, and it took a while for us to read through the extensive menu which features 4 vegetarian choice, 22 different lunch specials ($5-7), 17 dinners ($8-10), 10 grilled entrees ($10-12.50), 7 seafood dishes ($12-13), along with 7 fajitas plates. In addition they have 15 a la carte items such as tacos for $2. And for now they have a 2 for 1 drink special. While many of the entrees sounded good, we decided to order the "pick your own" plates of typical Mexican items (2 for $8, or 3 for $9) that come with rice and beans. We chose the taco, enchilada, tostada, tamale and burrito. Other choices are flauta, chalupa, and chile relleno. Our orders came out fairly quickly and overall each of the five items were fairly typical Americanized Tex-Mex fare. In addition, the rice was excellent and the beans were very good. While I much prefer the genuinely authentic flavors of the many small local Mexican restaurants in North Pinellas, many folks like the cheese and sauce-covered items found at Tequila's, and that's not a bad thing. And to that extent, Tequila's will likely meet many folks expectations for Mexican food. I'd likely visit again just to see if their entrees have more authentic flavors. My scores on the Pinellas county Mexican restaurant scale: Atmosphere: 3 Service: 4 Food: 3 Value: 4

The minute a Mexican joint opens in Tampa Bay, I head there like a fly to honey. I adore Mexican food and I have eaten at the best Mexican joints all over the world, so I know Mexican. This place is trying very hard and I hate to burst their bubble and the bubble of people out there expecting great things based on previous reviews. But this place as it currently stands is no better or more "authentic" than, say, Miguels in South Tampa or any other mediocre Mex joint. The chips are greasy and thick, not my cup of tea. The salsa is too spicy for my taste. I ordered chicken/steak fajitas: steak was salty and tough and I could not figure out what kind of cut it was (fajitas are supposed to be made with skirt or flank steak; this steak was neither). The chicken was salty also. The accompanying toppings were OK. The guacamole was runny and not good. The pico de gallo was good. The rice and beans were surprisingly good. My friend had a taco salad and it was OK. The taco shell was mushy b/c the meat in the salad was too wet and made the shell mushy. The lettuce was not the freshest. I left most of my food and gave it to my dog when I got home. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing, but I ordered this based on all the 5 star reviews this place has gotten thus far. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A 5 STAR RESTAURANT TO YOU???? I am basing my 3 stars on the huge menu/options, the food quality, and the service by the way. Not on the fact that the place is kind of dumpy, has marginal A/C going (don't go when it's hot) and the fact that when I went there, it was raining and the roof was leaking in several places and they had buckets all over tables, floors etc. to collect the water. I ask again: DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A 5 STAR RESTAURANT TO YOU????

Disappointing. The 2-4-1 margaritas were tasteless and low on alcohol. The beef fajitas were tough, bland. Where's the beef? Just not enough. On the positive side, I loved the salsa.

Wonderful service! We came here while on vacation looking for big margaritas and were not disappointed! The jumbo margaritas were 2 for 1 which was a welcomed surprise. As a gluten-free eater I enjoyed their chips, salsa, queso and two tacos. Delicious!

Good tacos and burritos, ice cold draught, and excellent Margaritas. Elisabeth was a very attentive and friendly server. We looked all over, and Clearwater doesn't have a lot of Mexican restaurants. We were super happy to find Tequila's. We will go back.

Well priced. Decent food. Good service. The quality of food is better than most Mexican restaurants in Clearwater. There is a problem with parking, there are only about 20 spots behind the building, and the parking spots in front of the building are metered. So you have to know to park in the back, not the front. I don't care for the type of cheese that they use, it's the cheap white cheese that is used for queso dip. I had a cheese enchilada, and it wasn't great, but the spinach enchilada was tasty!

  • Tony R.

Finally got to give this place a try. The restaurant smelled a little weird and I agree with other reviewers that it was kind of hot inside. We decided to eat out on the patio. I ordered the chile relleno and a tostada while the kids had quesedillas. The tostada was nothing to brag about and the chile was good but tasted a little bland. The rice had some crunchy parts in it from scraping the bottom of the pot and the beans were eh, ok. Also ordered a Margarita which was two for one prices at around $8, not a super bargain. Overall, it was eh, ok. Nothing great, nothing aweful. If it wasn't for Los Mayas being closed on the 4th we wouldn't have tried it, glad we did but next time its back to the regular spot.

Typical Mexican place. My sister and I went here on Monday because the place we planned to go was closed for vacation. The buy one get one free margaritas were huge, but typical margarita. We enjoyed our chips and salsa. our flauta and tostada, rice and beans. Nothing special but a good value and good food. Service was very good and our waiter was friendly and quick.

First time here, just stopped in to grab a drink and and appetizer. I don't think they have even been open a week. Both chicken nachos and margarita's were delicious. My brother, who I had drinks with, had lunch earlier that week and said it was the best chicken enchilada he ever had. It's nice to have a good Mexican walking distance from downtown.

Don't let the empty parking lot fool you. This restaurant just opened down the street from us and we almost did not go in. What they lack in marketing, they make up in delicious food. I have been looking for a good Tex-Mex since I moved here 12 years ago from Colorado. The Mexican here is just not the same as CO and CA and I miss it. This one is as close as I've seen so far. The only thing missing is the green chili. I had the Carnitas suggested by our waitress and was not disappointed. The chips for the chip & salsa were fresh and warm along with the rest of our meal that was just as fresh. We will definitely be back.

This is the place to go in Clearwater for authentic Mexican food. Have eaten there 5 times and had 5 different delicious meals. Even the chips and salsa are excellent. The price range was very reasonable. They have a good selection of Tequilas! Highly recommend!

I have looked for good Tex-Mex food since moving to Tampa a year ago from Texas and this place is the best. Great chips and salsa and some of the best chicken frajitas I have had,
