Wasn't expecting much because of the fact that it's a chain and I haven't heard the best, but I actually really enjoyed my meal. I got the kung pow chicken with brown rice and it was delicious. Super flavorful and the perfect amount of spicy-ness. You could tell it's made fresh!

If you're looking for fresh North Atlantic seafood stews, you're in the wrong place; they don't do it the PEI way. Fast casual American Asianish they can handle. Well, mostly they can handle it. The cashier seemed baffled by our request to be seated at the recently vacated (and only available) table, spinning in place a few times before muttering that she had to ask her manager. The manager, as it turned out, was the woman facing the corner while talking on the phone, doubly inaccessible to her hapless charges. But when we finally got our food, it was palatable, and more so once I added chili paste to what was supposed to be a spicy dish. Crowded and mundane, but palatable. Unadvertised starving-artist special: a rather large container of orange slices right next to the to-go containers by the condiments. Can't afford both takeout and groceries? Too lazy to cook nevertheless? Pack a to-go container with orange slices and split the difference!

We always have great service here and food is good. I like watching the staff cook in the kitchen, which is visible from the tables, when they are really busy. They are in a zone and get the food out quickly. Looks like they have good management here.

Pros: The veggies in my ginger broccoli with tofu were cooked perfectly: firm with a nice bite, but not raw. Cons: Everything else. Really. Our table wasn't clean so they brushed all the food particles onto the floor. When I saw that, I looked around and noticed that the dining area floor was filthy. The girl who took my order was way too busy and forgot my water glass. The rice was not sticky at all, which made it difficult to eat with chopsticks. I find even mild salsa to be spicy, but I was able to taste my husband's supposedly "spicy" dish with no problems. The sauce for the egg rolls was a sweet honey mustard (really???). The tofu in my dish had a weird processed texture. Everything was way too sugary. I get that Sarasota isn't a culinary mecca, but this was seriously terrible food for anyone who likes flavors other than sweet.

Dollar for dollar very tough to beat this place. Great tasting food, large portions. Only downfall is sometimes to busty so line/seating is PIA. OTherwise great!

Soooo, visited last night at 9:40. (They close at 10, but hey - it's a quick bite). Manager took our order. Either she doesn't smile or had already exhausted her resevoir of faux-friendliness for the day. "Can I get a cup for water?" ---- SLAM, on the counter. Wellllll, ok then. Take our number, go into the FILTHY lobby. There were three tables eating and nearly EVERY single table had dirty plates on them. The floor did not look like it had been swept since mid-August. I was afraid to touch the service bar for fear I might get plague or bird flu. (filthy) Get our food delivered by the friendly (sarcasm) food runner. Go to get a fork from the service bar. Of course, no silverware. Sit back down. "Excuse me, there are no forks at the service bar." No comment - she just turns around, goes to the back, comes out and drops a bucket of forks in. I guess I thought it would be nice if maybe she just walked us over a couple forks at the same time? I guessed wrong. She was far too busy not cleaning tables to be bothered. Finishing our meal and 9:59, ding! all the chairs start going up on the (dirty) tables. Ok, I get the hint. We pack up, walk to the exit door. Manager looks up at us, looks back to what she is doing so I just shout "Yup, You have a nice day too!" What an absolute pathetically run operation. The female manager has the disposition of someone doing food-service for a prison.

I've been to several Pei Weis throughout the US and this was by far the one with the worst service, flavor and cleanliness. Two tables around within earshot had wrong orders and by the time we left five tables surrounding us were full with dirty plates and napkins from diners who had left and no one had bused them, the food itself tasted lower than the standard Pei Wei fare. I will not spend my money going back there again.

Consistently good. I go about five or six times a year. There is a new menu that has smaller portions as an option, which I really like. The service is quick and there is an open kitchen that is fun to watch. You order and pay and then they bring the food to your table. Drawback is the noise level. However, the value of what you get to what you pay is awesome.

I've been going to this Pei Wei since it opened. I probably eat there once or twice every three months, sometimes via online order and pickup, other times as a dine-in customer. The restaurant has changed some things about its menu recently that have made meals slightly more expensive. This is frustrating, but not a deal-breaker for me (yet). What I appreciate most about Pei Wei is that, as a vegetarian, I can go in and quickly get a relatively healthy meal with tofu for protein. I realize that for the majority of the population this is not an issue--but when you're a vegetarian or a vegan and you live in FL and all you want is a quick, healthy meal that you don't have to prepare yourself, there aren't many options (particularly if you're also lactose intolerant). In this regard, Pei Wei is one of the few restaurants that capitalizes on a key need. I've noticed a considerable amount of variation over time with respect to the cleanliness of the restaurant and the involvement of the staff. I can't tell if this is due to different managers on different shifts, but it's slightly annoying, only in terms of how clean the benches/tables are kept. A little known secret is that this location has a lovely outdoor patio. I wish they'd put in some more plants to buffer it from the cars better, but on a nice winter evening, it's a great place to enjoy your meal. When I order take-out, I do so through Pei Wei's online ordering system, which is straightforward and easy to use. Take-out is truly the best option here, particularly when it's busy. I've never had a problem with an order being wrong. Overall, Pei Wei is good, quick relatively healthy food at a decent price. No, it's not "real" Chinese/Japanese/Thai cuisine, but it's flavorful and good for what it is. I particularly recommend it to anyone on a vegetarian/vegan diet, or those who appreciate real vegetables in their food.

I loved this place so much... Before yesterday. Dishes were so dirty, I can't even describe. My husband is still sick, with temperature, upset stomach. Probably it was our last time there.

Wonderful food....but it is noisey and the staff sets an atmosphere of urgency...NOT A RELAXING MEAL!!!! I will only use them for carryout.

First time trying Pei Wei, will never go back. I ordered the Honey Chicken with white rice. I also ordered extra vegetables and they were nowhere to be found. My wife ordered Pad Thai with chicken and we were a little surprised to also receive Tofu as well. The Pad Thai had to much lime juice and everything was very salty. Mine was okay, hers was gross and I won't be back.

Every time I come here I regret it. It's fast but so boring and the sushi is not fresh with way too much rice. I also think it's overpriced for how meh it is.

Hands down, worst Pei Wei location I've ever been to. They completely messed up the order- by leaps and bounds. I saw the food ticked and it read in large letters "FOOD ALLERGY" and they put the allergen right into the meal. Not to mention the other meal was totally wrong also- and the ticked had it printed correctly- the kitchen simply did not read it. Wow. And they offered me nothing for their horrible service and extra wait for screwing up our meal. A free appetizer or something? Anything? Worst part- I got it home and the non allergen one was still wrong. Yikes. On the bright side- the kid who rang up the order was polite, friendly and tried hard to fix a problem he was not at fault for.

Pei Wei Never lets us down.we were looking for something not too pricey, good, and dog friendly in the area of the brand new university town center mall. If you were to eat anywhere in the mall, the wait time for any of the restaurants there were at least an hour to two hours. We went across the street from the mall. We were surprised to have never been. There were quite a bit of strip mall stores like pier 1, marshalls, best buy, a work out place, total wine store, as well as other restaurants including Bonefish, Carmel cafe, an Indian restaurant, and a Mediterranean restaurant. We picked Pei Wei, and like I said, nice, consistent, & good. They have an outside area, and October is a perfect time of year to sit outside, plus we have our little dog with us. Make sure you get a number first. That's your table, then, stand up in line, check out the menu, and order what you want from the cashier, check out person. If you have questions, they will help you. Yes, we are those those type of people at this place in particular to always order the same thing. We ordered traditional lettuce wraps, and Vietnamese chicken spring rolls Perfect for us on our hour drive home. We don't feel like drastic fullness, and we are ready to go. We have in the past tried other dishes, but these are our favorite. I love their peanut sauce here as well. We are happy we found this area. It's always fun to discover new areas or places that we haven't been to before.

I tried it again because a friend dragged me in here. The verdict is that they have not cleaned the grease since the last time I was here.... So it's a hell no! Stay away from this roach infested place!

Piss poor accurately describes this cluster-F! What a mess! Literally! Tables are not bused! No where to sit to eat! Filthy dirty kitchen -- I am really surprised the are not shut down! I guess the health department just hasn't by. While I was sitting at the counter I watched a cook pick up a piece of meat an tossed it back in the wok. The entire place smells and feels like the frying grease. Save your self time money and heart burn and go anywhere else.

Not bad not great..smaller restaurant that feels like cafeteria dinning. Order at the counter wait till someone drops it off style of dining. food is decent..i dont go out of my way to eat here but it's good in a pinch.

I don't know why this got low stars! It's such a great place! The summer rolls are DELICIOUS! And so is the Caramel Chicken. And the outdoor mall where it's located is so attractive and nice to stroll around at night. You pay at the counter so it's easy to come here with kids. We were really happy to find it on a recent trip to Sarasota.

Awesome awesome good..I've been coming to Pei Wei with my husband for over 2 years now and I love it every time. The foods always hot n fresh. They make it right in front of you. You gotta try it out at least once.

I finally had to write in a comment after my last meal. This used to be a great place to eat but the qualilty has fallen to the point where I wont go back anymore. Wasted $$ time after time thinking it would get better. This is a shame because I used to enjoy going for lunch and is close by to my office. Eek! Me thinks someone needs to make some BIG adjustments with your cooks.

Korean Spicy Beef ($8.50) is not spicy and is too salty. It also has a weird tangy taste to it that I cannot identify. Avoid the Thai Blazing Noodles ($6.95) at all costs. I love black pepper, but this dish is just too much. The flavor here is ketchup with TONS of black pepper. It is seriously one of the nastiest things I have ever eaten. However, everything else is still great other than that.

We like to order online and pickup. The last two orders were incorrect when we picked them up and we received serious " tude" when we asked for the orders to be corrected. Both times we were required to wait an additional 20 minutes to correct the order. Tonight was strike three!!!! How do you mix up an online order? Once again we were forced to wait for the order to be corrected. No more!!!

If you are looking for a restaurant 'straight out of Asia' this is probably not it, however; if you are looking for decent P.F. Cheng's style quality at a decent price and easy on your pocket I would definitely recommend. I guess this would be my second go-to comfort food restaurant that I have found in my area so far, with a little more ethnic flair to it.

This place was pretty good. Everything was a little bit salty, though. I ordered some sort of spicy Thai noodle dish with beef. It was good but I felt as though it was too salty without actually being spicy. It could have done with a bit of sweet to balance out the flavors. I really do like the concept of being able to choose from a variety of base dishes and the subsequent customization process that ensues.

Update 2/21/13: I am giving this one star after yet again going to Pei Wei this weekend with my mom, the worst service and meal and we are NEVER EVER, EVER going back again EVER. The atmosphere at Pei Wei's is warm, I have not found it dirty as other reviewers mentioned and I have been several times, but everytime I leave I say that is the last time except I get their BOGOs and I think I'll give them another try. I find most of their dishes taste the same and are very greasy. I finally tried the "velvet" method they use of cooking meat without breading in stock and it was awful and I was glad I didn't pay for it. The one thing I do like is their spicy chicken salad, the veggies are super fresh and it's a good salad but again the chicken or shrimp is fried and greasy. I go with no dressing which is super sweet. I tend to read the nutrtionals on line and just learned that ALL Pei Wei's meals (including salads and kids dishes) are TWO Servicngs - the combo's are listed as a single serving - so double the fat, calories and sodium for a very unheathly meal. OK I know it's Chinise food.! As other's have stated there is an inconsistency in the service. Since they have opened they have gone through several managers, so that may be the reason for that. They were doing good for awhile, but last night the staff was overwhelmed from the Ordering to kitchen and this was not a busy time. They seemed understaffed. We ordered at 6:17 two dishes and were not served until 7:00 after being given the wrong item. Staff was running around trying to find who the food was for, they even went in and outside a few times to go back to the cooking area. I think the BOGO is making them super busy not sure why they do them so often.

I had the Teriyaki Chicken ordered spicy. My meal was not spicy but instead they made someone else's meal at the table spicy, she doesn't like spicy. Then I experienced some pretty severe food poisoning the next day that lasted for 10 days. I enjoy the food at Pei Wei and could put up with their mistakes the majority of the time but after this never again.

Moderately inexpensive faux-Asian food. What's not to like? Every time I'm in Sarasota and I need to eat, this is my go-to; it's consistent, reasonably tasty, and reasonably fast.

    (4)
  • Sara S.

Open less than a week and the restaurant is booming. Lines are out the door (still just a 15 min. wait) and online orders require almost a two-hour wait. They have a good system though and you can rest assure you'll have a seat when your food is ready. Now to what counts, the food. It is way TOO SALTY. We tried the Mongolian Beef, the Korean Beef, Thai Dynamite Chicken and Pei Wei Spicy Chicken. Both beef dishes were inedible due to the sodium. It killed any spice or other flavor in the dish. The Thai Dynamite wasn't very spicy or flavorful, just okay. I loved the Pei Wei Spicy Chicken, but my husband thought it was too sweet like pineapple. I think he was expecting Chang's Spicy Chicken from PF Chang's, Pei Wei's parent company. It seems all the dishes are fresh, but not well-prepared and overly salty.

Its not bad...not bad. Ive never had a bad experience here... and ive never had a memorable experience here. But i dont hate the place or the food, so ive come back a few times. I think it provides the appropriate food to its targeted demographic.

Love this place! Food is great and very fast. Kung Pao Chicken is just like PF Changs but a little smaller portion. The staff could be a little friendlier and more attentive but they are always very busy.

I found about Pei Wei from a bartender at P.F. Changs in Tampa. I go to Changs as often as I can when in Tampa. I have been to Changs in L.A. and Vegas. One of my all-time favs! My first experience with Pei Wei was not the best as the dish I ordered was too spicy and the server had told me it wasn't spicy but her spicy and mine are obviously different. I had gotten takeout and got home to not being able to eat it. I called them and they told me to bring it back but it was late and 12 miles away. So the next day I went and they gave me my choice of whatever I wanted. They were very accomodating. Since then I have taken several friends who all loved it. Their teas are great and love the crab wontons. I like the atmosphere and they are always busy. You probably don't want to have an intimate romantic dinner here. For me, it is the closest to Changs I can get w/o driving 50 miles and I love Changs! Give it a try!

    (4)
  • Lizet H.

Once you go there you won't want to go anywhere else. I know I don't! I love their Wonton Soup, I always get extra wontons. The crab wontons are delicious as well as the egg rolls. I try to eat something different when I go there and I haven't had a meal I did not like. If you go at certain hours you will have to wait, but it's well worth it.

We have been there twice. It is ok. Limited menu. It's kinda cafeteria style. You order, get your drinks and then sit. We are in no hurry to go back. The lo mein was not very flavorful. The spring rolls were good. They are very organized and wait staff was very helpful and friendly.

First of all eatin in the food is good even though you have to wait 20 - 30 minutes to get sat. Take out is what I am basing this review on. This is the 2nd time getting take out and again they have screwed up. Girl at register says 20 minutes only after asked. Then gives you a buzzer. 30 minutes goes by and I go back to the counter. She tells me owe your food was ready 15 minutes ago. No sorry nothing and the buzzer never went off. Found at home receipt said pager 32 and girl had given us pager 35. Now food. Ordered food and told girl that they always mess up on our requests. I exlaimed the requests and she repeats everything perfectly. Then food turns out to be different. Last time I had bad take out I called and was promissed gift certificates in the mail that week. Which was 3 weeks ago. They miss it. So busy with poor managment.

    (1)
  • Hal H.

Given the paucity of decent Asian restaurants in Sarasota, Pei Wei is one of the better choices. Still, it's a far cry from P.F. Chang, its parent. Still, the food is freshly prepared and the prices very reasonable.

I've never left Pei Wei hungry. I enjoy the food and unique menu. I come here often and so do members of my family. The staff helpful and always friendly

My husband & I gave this place two tries, but no more. The food is not great, it's overly crowded, and the prices are not good enough to make up for everything else. I had their pad thai, and it was pretty bad. The noodles were really gummy, it was overly spiced, the shrimp was overcooked and chewey, they gave me entire stalks of cilantro, and there were not enough peanuts. The only good thing about it was the tofu - that was cooked nicely. So, I picked it out and ate it. Otherwise, ick. My husband had the Japanese chili Ramen, and it was better than my dish by far. The noodles were a bit salty and the beef was a bit overcooked, but it was fairly decent. We also had their crab wontons the first time we visited, and I didn't care for them, but my husband liked them. They are not very cheesey and have big hunks of crab. Good, but not my preference. The restaurant is always busy, but there are WAY too many tables in there. We ended up squeezing into a 2-person table that was probably 18 inches away from another couple. At least we were on the end. It's just not a comfortable or pleasant restaurant experience, and the food is not very good.

Given the paucity of decent Asian restaurants in Sarasota, Pei Wei is one of the better choices. Still, it's a far cry from P.F. Chang, its parent. Still, the food is freshly prepared and the prices very reasonable.

A hit or miss place depending on what you order. I have tried many items on the menu as it is very convenient for lunch. I would recommend the Pad Thai as an entree and spring rolls as an appetizer. Doesn't come close to the choices or quality of P.F. Chang's.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
