My wife and I just returned from a spectacular trip to Deer Run B&B. Situated off the main road DR was a quiet, private oasis. While we had access to many nearby activities (Bahia Honda State Park is not to be missed) our best moment we're simply relaxing at the inn. Our room was comfortable with nice personal touches and a lovely screened in porch ( with porch swing !). DR has a nice little beach area, not so much a swimming beach but beautiful with ample access to lounge chairs and kayaks. It was a special treat to have several deer wander up at various times during our stay....magical. As Eco conscious vegans we especially loved the the food!! Jen created some of the bets breakfasts I have ever had. Each meal started with a homemade vegan muffin and along the way we were grated to French toast, quiche, iced coffee smoothies and organic fruit galore ( and much, much more) Jen and Harry were great hosts and we enjoyed just chatting and charing experiences. They are really trailblazers and it was an a pleasure staying at an in with composting, recycling and other energy saving touches. If you are vegan, vegetarian or an open minded omni you should book your stay soon. I know I will be making plans for our return!

While the place is pretty and i support the concept of eco-friendly, the sleeping experience is awful. the house is soo old that you can hear every step from the room above. both days we were woken up at 5am with the loud steps of the inkeepeers. falling asleep was no easy task as we heard the loud steps until 1130pm. the loud noises made it for an awful sleeping experience. not sure if every room downstairs has the same issue but the room Eden is just attrocious and would not recommend it to anyone. the policies in the information book are so rigid that it does bot make you feel welcome, early checkout, cant spend the day there after checkout. Dont expect to be back here. Also meat lovers, this isnt a place for you and you will be made to feel awkward as we felt yesterday at breakfast.

Deer Run is a true paradise! We stayed in the Eden garden room and it was so cute and cozy. Jen makes the most amazing vegan treats, I miss my mango biscotti with coffee! We have stays in many guest houses in Key West , we never stayed on Big Pine before- it was SO quiet and peaceful. There is so much nature around, we saw the little key deer and beautiful birds. I highly recommend Deer Run, it is a very special place:)

Our stay was so much more than we anticipated. We were in desperate need of a relaxing getaway, and we got that and more at Deer Run. The B&B was so cozy and tranquil and the natural beauty of its location was awe-inspiring. Who can stay stressed with those views? Not to mention those adorable key deer! Jen and Harry's warmth and hospitality were very much appreciated, and their commitment to the environment was inspirational. We'll be back for some more of those vegan goodies!

This review is based on our first-hand experiences with the owners of Deer Run Bed & Breakfast in Big Pine Key, FL, as well as our experiences attempting to cancel a reservation with them. It pains me to leave negative comments for a vegan establishment, but I feel our experience with Harry and Jen of Deer Run Bed & Breakfast in Big Pine Key warrants this 2-star rating. We made a reservation for 7 nights in December and paid a 50% deposit at the time of booking, which amounted to just under $1000 on our credit card. Last week we notified the owners that we would need to cancel our reservation due to a medical condition that will physically and financially prevent us from going on vacation this December. This notice was sent to them four months in advance of our reservation. After waiting four days for a response, I sent a follow-up e-mail and was told that they did not receive my previous cancellation request (because it "must have gone into their spam folder") and that they would be processing the refund promptly. The following day I followed up again and they still had not processed the refund. Finally, we received a notice stating that we would only be refunded $687.50 of our deposit - we would be penalized $275 (equal to one night's stay) for our cancellation. To date we have not seen an actual credit issued so we have filed a dispute with our credit card company. Upon calling and speaking to Harry to see if he could make an exception for this penalty due to the circumstances, he explained that this astronomical cancellation fee is designed to cover credit card fees that small businesses are charged for reservations. The amount of $275 is approximately 30% of our deposit $962 deposit. I fail to see how a 30% credit card fee is possible. The amount of money that Deer Run B&B charges for cancellations is unconscionable. They may respond by saying that other establishments have similar policies but we have traveled extensively and that has not been our experience. Most places (including small businesses) have a 30-day cancellation policy. Reservations cancelled outside of 30 days are provided a full refund minus a nominal cancellation fee. Is their cancellation fee stated in their policy? Yes it is, and we regret that we agreed to it. We did not foresee the circumstances we would be facing and perhaps we should have booked elsewhere based on their ridiculous policy. Still, we believe that certain circumstances warrant further consideration and should be treated with grace. Instead, at a time when we are experiencing financial hardship due to illness, we are out $275 and we have nothing to show for it. The owners are, no doubt, pocketing a large portion of that money. And four month's time should provide ample opportunities to re-book the room we reserved. Followup e-mails asking for consideration of a full refund have been ignored. If they respond to this review, they may say that my subsequent e-mails went into their spam folder. But shouldn't paying customers be added to a contacts list to avoid missing important communications? As a fellow vegan, I am all too familiar with the accusations from others of having more compassion for animals than people. In this case, Harry and Jen seem to live up to that reputation as they clearly lack compassion even for their fellow vegans.

Great location and nice hosts. The breakfasts are very good and filling. Note that this is a vegan establishment. It is fun to see the deer walking by your room or chair.

My partner and I chose to celebrate our honeymoon at Deer Run. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here. We stayed in the Eden room which opened to a sweet garden that grew many of the fruits and herbs we enjoyed in various breakfasts. Jen and Harry were gracious hosts and were always willing to give advice on where to go and what to do. Each morning, we enjoyed the alternating savory and sweet breakfasts, conversing with other guests, sipping coffee, listening to the wind in the palm fronds, and planning the day's events. Our days were filled with activities like kayaking off the property's private beach, relaxing in the salt-water pool, engaging in conversation with Angel the rescued bird, giving Peri the neighbor cat a few snuggles and scratches, and watching the tiny Key Deer relax and eat mangrove leaves. We rode bicycles, drove into Key West to party a bit, snorkeled, visited a Turtle Hospital, found the No Name Pub, and ate an incredible vegan dinner at Kaya Island Eats. Also, when they learned that we were on our honeymoon, Jen and Harry surprised us with a delicious vegan cake and a bottle of sparkling wine. It was exceptionally thoughtful and lovely. In our experience, it is so difficult to travel as a vegan. My partner and I have never been on a cruise, and until this point we had never been to a bed and breakfast - why pay the money when you can't enjoy the food? Finding Deer Run changed that reality for us. Not only were we able to partake in the breakfasts, the food was DELICIOUS. And I'm not just saying that because I am vegan. During our stay there were also non-vegan guests. They loved the food and environment so much that this was their third visit! Jen and Harry also made finding vegan food around town easy - something we had been worried about before our arrival. All in all, we had an incredible time. Our honeymoon at Deer Run far surpassed any expectation we had. If you are reading these posts and trying to make a decision about where to stay, stay here. Yelp can be a valuable tool. Often people want to make sure they'll be spending their money wisely. As two people on a very limited budget, we had absolutely no regrets about a single penny being spent here. It was wonderful, just wonderful. We can't wait to come back!

This was our first B&B experience along with our first vegan experience. Loved every minute of it! The Heaven room has wonderful views of the ocean/beach and is quite comfy. Don't be afraid of the vegan thing, it was wonderful. Jen & Harry are quite the host as was Angel. We talked to our fellow travelers that have stayed at many B&B's and they claim that this is one of the best. Perfect place for a couple to stay & relax, not so suited to the all night partiers. Take advantage of some of the freebies like the bikes for a nice ride or even take them to Key West to get around. The glass bottom kayak makes for an amazing trip on the water. Or just relax with a beer on the beach & enjoy the ocean & the deer. The only slight negative we found was the jacuzzi is naturally heated but doesn't go above 84 degrees or so, we would of preferred something in the high 90's. Being our 1st trip to the Keys we are glad we chose this place, some of the 'Nice' motels we found on the internet were in less than desirable locations. I wouldn't recommend staying in any of the Keys except for Big Pine or Key West.
