The breakfast sandwiches are a hotdog bun with a fried egg and one or two sausages. The sausages are special made. Crisp casing with a smokey rich taste. Sausages cooked well with the egg to round off the sandwich. Not greasy or oily at all. A little out of the way to get to and a small parking lot but the service is so fast that the turn over is quick. Right off the highway it will come up quickly when driving along so be sure to keep an eye out. The sausages were the highlight and the main point of going to Helens. Rumor has it that at times the sausages they use are available at specific markets nearby. I also decided to try the pork chop sandwich based on some reviews I had seen. It was a huge pork chop with 2 pieces of white bread. No frills or garnishes; just meat and bread. Don't forget there is still a bone in the pork chop while you are eating it and yes the chop is probably twice as big as the bread. A definite place to visit again and again.

Yum doesn't even begin to cover it! I had the sausage gravy over home fries and my fiancé had a sausage sandwich. We both loved our food. The service was quick and personable. We took our food to go, but you can sit in the Elvis room to eat.

Not for the health conscience but all the food is great. Definitely try the sausage if it's your first time and your second try the pork chop sandwich.

Helen's is great! I hate that it is closed sundays but everyone needs atleast one day of rest. Their scrapple sandwiches are delicious and ive never had anything bad from there. best breakfast sandwiches around. go here!

If you are on Rt 13 M-S between the hours of 5am and I believe 1 pm , This is the place to stop. One of Delaware best kept secrets, and I hate to spread it around too much because Like this morning, the Line was out the door. Don't let that deter you though, They move very quickly. Best sausage sandwich around. Also great bacon sandWiches.

If you're doing the long drive along Route 1 to or from the beach early enough in the morning, you'll do yourself a favor by taking Exit 119 (heading north), driving about two miles north on Route 13, and stopping at Helen's Sausage House. Despite arriving and waiting for a parking spot to open up at about 10 a.m. on a Saturday, and the line practically going out the door once I was able to get said spot, I was in and out with a sausage sandwich for $3.80 in about 10 minutes. Service is quick. And the sandwich was fantastic. Two thick sausage links with a great amount of spice and heat and served on a hot dog bun was a delicious breakfast treat. Sometimes simplicity is best. This is no exception. All in all, it's the right place, and if it's the right time, I'll be there again.

This is a place you should visit!!!! You won't be sorry. Great great great sandwiches and sausages!!

This place is addictive! I get a single with egg and ketchup. The pork chop sandwich is cooked to perfection and seasoned properly. Fried bologna sandwich is next. Will be back soon. Employees have great smiles every time.

Ah, what the hey, give this place five stars, four for porky goodness and one extra for being unabashedly themselves and completely Delaware (except, the food is good, which is NOT typical of Delaware but you can't be all things to all people.) This is a DIVE. Do not be fooled by the "Recommended by Gourmet Magazine" splashed on a hastily-whitewashed concrete block wall. They actually were recommended by Gourmet. Not for ambience, however. And do not fear the circling trucks, towing camouflaged duck boats and the hunters striding around in their camos. That is your Delaware sign of quality. The interior--well, once we went there and I actually ate IN and it was a mistake. True, I did crawl on my hands and knees over the carpet so I saw it way too up close and personal (I had a broken leg, long story) and the booth was invitingly decorated with faded Elvis memorabilia but the place was dingy and dirty. What you have to do is run in and yell an order for 2 sausage sandwiches (with potatoes and onions if you know what good is, and yes you need two, trust me on this) and then run past the hunters and try to get back to your car, which you parked somehow someplace because there are many signs saying "DO NOT EVEN THINK OF PARKING HERE" but the lot looks like it was an afterthought.) Oh, the food? It's a very average budget brand hotdog bun filled with a Kirby Holloway sausage and a scoop of potato and onion all sauteed on a "never been cleaned, really since 1954" grill. That is what contributes to the ineffable flavor. The entire thing is wrapped in foil and you think, this is going to be really bad, but somehow, it's not. It's divine. My mouth is watering, writing this. True,it's bad FOR you, it will clog every capillary in your body, but it's delicious. The porkchop sandwich is rumored to be equally excellent, but I don't really eat pork much, so have not given this a try except for the sausage. You have to do all this before 11am because this place shuts up tighter than the oysters over on Bowers' Beach at low tide. When they are tired, or run out of sausages, the bars go up like on a pawn shop in a bad part of town, which you'd think it was if you drove past really fast. Still, this is the REAL Delaware and actually, it's a very tasty sandwich. Gourmet Magazine may be no more, but Helen's lives on.

Ok passed it sooooo many times but never went in. Made a special side trip this past week to try it. It is counter service but after you order, collect your drinks and pay, you can sit and they will bring it to you. Not a lot of seating. The bigger area shows cute articles of Helen and her obvious love of Elvis. With Christmas here Elvis was wearing a Santa hat. I ordered the famous pork chop with home fries. Pork chop was yummy. Added a smidge of hot sauce but either way it was delicious. The home fries were COLD!! I didn't finish them and I am the biggest potatoe lover. My husband had sausage And eggs. He loved the eggs as they were good and cooked to order. I liked the sausage as did he. It was very good. Again cold potatoes but a little warmer than mine. The pork is why you should come here. Skip potatoes unless you request them hot. We would come here again just for the pork. Yummy!!

Always good and fast! I've been there several times and have only gotten the sausage sandwich (2 sausages) with cheese (sauce). And they are always awesome!!!

Helen's is a Delaware icon. Although I've lived here most of my life, I only just recent visited this establishment. After years of hearing from my friends and family about how good it is, I had to confirm it for myself. Now, Helen's is no fancy place. It's essentially a small building on the side of route 13. It's got that old time, dive feel to it. When you walk in, it's like you travel back in time 15 or 20 years. But if you're looking to get the local vibe and some good food, it's the place to go. Judging on the sausage alone, it totally gets 5 stars. I only gave it 4 because of the overall presentation. Service was very quick and polite, but the place could definitely use some sprucing up. Some loyal patrons would argue that it's retro decor is part of it's charm, but I vote for a little remodel. We went on a Saturday morning around 9am and there was a queue. I got the feeling that there's always a line here because the kitchen just kept cranking out the sausages. I've also heard that they will run out or sausages before their 2pm closing time. You KNOW it's good when people form a line and they run out before the end of the day!! We both got the egg and sausage for breakfast, which comes with not ONE but TWO sausages! Ask for a single if you just want one, but who just wants one? Served on a hot dog bun, the unassuming sausages were delightfully spiced with perfectly crispy burnt ends. If you're a fan of any kind of BBQ, you know that the burnt ends are highly coveted. On this sandwich you get four of them! Totally worth the 20 minute ride, and I plan to revisit soon.

Indeed. A divey shack about 2 miles from a Rt 1 exit, serves up fast food sausage sandwiches. In a large bun, I got the single sausage with an egg over hard. Everything seems to be pre-made which made the queue of 5 move pretty quickly. Sausage was about the size of the bun and was subtly seasoned with sage and garlic, like a breakfast sausage. Crisp skin and moist interior made this a toothsome tasty breakfast. Added onions and peppers for 60 cents and made it worthwhile. Also got the gargantuan pork chop sandwich. Mostly tender, but some pieces in this meal for 2 or 3 were dry and tough. Parking lot is small and there are no places on the street to park.

So, I'm back in Wilmington for work, when one of my coworkers says, "Hey...i'm swinging by 'Helen's' on the way into work tomorrow. You want anything?" Having no idea what "Helen's" is, I just said, "Get me one of whatever you're getting." Little did I know, I would be in love with"Helen" the next morning. I cruise into the office the following day and my sandwich is waiting for me: a double sausage, egg and cheese on a soft, white hot dog roll. In one word: GREAT! The sausage was smoked and grilled to perfection, and the egg and cheese was just the perfect morning treat. Very inexpensive, too. $3.50 for this great breakfast sandwich! My only regret is that I was not able to visit this magic place in person. Maybe on my next venture to "The First State."

amazing gem on the side of the road. i tried the double sausage sandwich and next time ill try the porkchop sandwich for $5. if your in the area do stop.

I don't want to say why I hit Helen's Sausage House because I'm afraid the secret will get out (though it wouldn't be hard to put two and two together...) - but I must say - Helen and her sausage are a hands down 5 star establishment. My friend hyped this place up for a full year and by the time I made it there - it was well worth the hype! Get the sausage egg and cheese, double link. It comes on a hot dog bun as some have already mentioned. It's like $4 and it's some of the best sausage you'll ever have. No question. Can't speak highly enough about it. The ladies at the counter were super friendly, too! Win-win. Go there. You know. If you ever find yourself in....Delaware.

I stopped by on my way to work. It's simple great tasting sausage on a store bought potato roll. I had the double with egg, even forgot the cheese wiz, and it was grab and go fantastic! The sausage texture was dynamite, likely deep fried and delicious. I'll be back.

Thanks to fellow Yelpers, we found this on our most recent run down to SOBX when we were looking for a quick lunch. Since we grabbed the menu before we stepped up to the counter, we were easily tagged as newbies. The friendly lady was quick to show us what they were famous for (no surprise, it would be the sausages indicated on the side of their building), as well as their pork chop, which is as big as your head! We had some expectation given the sausage house name of having a selection of different types of sausages (maybe hot, Italian, bratwurst) but that is not the case here. Basically, it's how many and with what. My husband got the double link sandwich with peppers and onions, I had the quite decent cheeseburger and we split a huge order of the Old Bay seasoned fries (great idea and one we are taking home with us). Food was good, fresh and filling, especially so as we were quite hungry. The dining room is is dated (all Elvis, bay-bee) but homey and clean. Most business seemed to be loyal locals getting take-out and we pretty much had the area to ourselves. The map location is wrong BTW... It's about a mile and a half up from the exit off of 13.

great little place. Early hours and fast, food is always tasty. I recommend the single with egg!

Helen's is THE best sausage. Period. One of Delaware's true gems. You can go to any McDonalds and fill up on processed meat patties--or you can go to Helen's and get a monstrosity of sausage and egg on a real roll. They are open Monday-Friday from 4 am-2 pm and Saturday 4 am- Noon. I've never strayed from their sausage or scrapple so I cannot review the other pieces of the menu. I've also enjoyed these sandwiches since I was a tot yet I've never dined in. We usually rush from New Castle County down to Kent before closing time on a Saturday and take a few for the road. It is equally important to buy extra to store for the next day. If you haven't been to Helen's, get off your hump! Go and get a REAL and delicious sausage sandwich for a great price (between 3.50-5.00 depending on your choices). Fun fact: call ahead..they will have your order ready!
(5)Ronald J.
I stop here one morning looking to take the edge off with a hearty breakfast sandwich. So I ordered the sausage sandwich. Sorry to say I was a bit disappointed! The bun was a hot dog bun and the sausage was half the size of the bun and the price was $ 4.00 . I left feeling hungrier than upon entering. Ronexon

Best sausage sandwich I've ever had. Most ridiculously outsized $4 pork chop sandwich I've ever seen. I would give this place infinite stars for its refusal to let idiot Guy Fieri and his knobbish backwards sunglasses into the kitchen. Sausage is perfectly cooked, blackened on the ends, and full of mild spice and flavor. I think the single sausage and egg sandwich was under $3. We sat for a while in the dining room full of Elvis decorations and memorabilia. On the fridge next to us were advertisements for a "memorial shoot" in honor of a lamented local. And adverts for two different church bingo soirées. Let the good times roll.

So, we don't live near here, but thanks to Yelp, we can eat like we do. Helen's was great! We both had "the Single, with an egg". And home fries. The sausage was really tasty - kind of charred on tlhe ends, but still juicy. How do they do that? The combination of meat, fried egg and the bun, was too, too good. The home fries were as good, if not the best I've ever had. Eat here!

Helen's is an unprepossessing breakfast and lunch cafe, located just off Highway 1 north of Smyrna. The sausage is truly outstanding, as is the jumbo pork chop. Most of their business is "to go", but there are four tables inside. Good news for those of us wh don't live nearby: the also sell the sausage uncooked. I have uploaded the menu and a couple of photos to my account.

This is a great place for breakfast and some really good fresh sausage. Once you pull up it doesn't look that great from the outside and it is place that locals go to for sure. The have different flavors of sausage and it is a great place to visit for some great sausage.
