The Wood Fired Pizza Menu

I'd been wanting to try the Wood Fired Pizza shop for awhile, given their consistently high ratings and the fact that this is, to my knowledge, the only place serving Neapolitan pizza in Newark proper. After visiting Philly and fighting the rush hour traffic, my folks were tired and didn't feel like cooking, so I ordered take out and headed over with my brother to pick it up. Service over the phone and in person was friendly and prompt--just what I needed after dealing with tired and irritable parents. Because my family members aren't very adventurous eaters, I kept it simple and ordered a cheese pie with mushrooms ($9.50) and a margherita pie ($11). The ingredients of the pies were top notch--the tomato sauce, cheese, and mushrooms were all fresh and delicious, and the crust was high-quality as well, with nice char. The expensive components (i.e., the cheese and mushrooms) were generously applied to the pies, and all of the ingredients were in proper proportion to one another, marrying together to create the best possible taste. My only criticisms were that the crust was softer and less crispy than I prefer, and that the pies weren't as hot as I would have liked by the time I arrived at home. However, both criticisms are very minor--the former is personal preference and the latter could easily be solved by eating in, which I would have done had my parents not been so tired and irritable. Despite these minor criticisms and my extensive experience with Neapolitan pizza, I'm awarding a perfect rating since this is by far the best pizza I've had in Newark. Sure, it's a bit more expensive than other local pizza joints, esp. in a college town like Newark, but the price point is lower than high end Neapolitan pizza places like Anthony's and the product is excellent quality, so it's well worth it. Coming from me, this is high praise, given that I live in Pittsburgh, where there are five wood fired pizza parlors downtown alone. If you live in the area and appreciate a good pizza, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Wood Fired Pizza, as pizza doesn't get any better than this in New Castle County, and possibly in DE!

1-star on dickesh-ness. We walk in, because I am looking for an alternative pizza place to the standard crap. Had it once before as take-out and seemed promising but poorly executed. I needed to try again to gauge quality. The girl behind the counter tells us that we can't bring our own cup into the restaurant. It's a "Health code violation". Her words not mine. We challenge her, because we think she is full of shi-. My girlfriend brings her cup to every casual restaurant we've ever been too. Ever. All the f-ing time. Always. Girl behind counter stands her ground. We leave. We go down the street to Iron Hill and have great pizza plus other stuff. We take our cup into the restaurant without issue. I highly recommend Iron Hill. Much better establishment. I looked up the health code and there are specific provisions for consumer owned containers. dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/d… . It is not a health code violation. So F- you. 1 star. you suck. I try to help a local business and get lies and BS. You will not get my business. You will get my bad feelings.

Stopped in for a quick lunch while in the area. Pizza looks great. I ordered pesto cheese bread as I was alone. Great marinara sauce on side. Jazz music playing. Nice environment. Outside seating. They also serve a variety of cocktails. Many items are sourced locally.

This place is really good. I wish we were closer, so that I could get take out. Dining in is minimalist. No TV or beer or annthing like that, but when you pump out pizza like they do, you don't need all that stuff. Would add to the atmosphere, but just watching the wood burning stove cook up bubbly deliciousness was good enough, especially once I got mine brought to the table!! I got the Pesto Besto and added bacon, my wife got the Margheritta (sp?) and both of use loved our pizza. Even had enough for lunch the next day, and it was great cold the next day, like the best pizzas are!!! I wish they were open for lunch, since its right around the corner from my office, but I will work late to catch dinner there again!!

This is a great little place near U Delaware. The service is excellent, pizza is quick. The pizza is delicious and made of high quality ingredients. There are side dishes which complement or can be eaten alone.

Delicious food with quality ingredients and great service. I have been eating at the Wood Fired Pizza Shop with my family since they started out as a food truck. Matt and Nate have always been friendly and accommodating of my family's food allergies. It is rare to find a restaurant with so many vegan options (vegan cheese topping, pasta salads, and even desserts!). Gluten free pizzas are also available. Make sure to check out their pickled veggies, olives, and pasta salads too!

Best Pizza Ive eaten in Delaware, hands down. Sauce was great, basil was fresh, the pork and beef meatballs on top of my pie were the perfect mix of both meats and plentiful. The mozz wasnt that low moisture type that you want to find on neapolitan pies but it was fresh and flavorful nonetheless. Staff was nice, asked my opinion and chatted for a few. Definitely give this place a shot and you wont regret it.

These guys are seriously the best in the area. There isn't anything that even comes close to it. And, they are super nice to boot! Everybody should support their local communities and businesses... and, I suggest you should start with this one. Thanks guys!!!

Pizza = amazing. The Mexican cola = amazing. Environment = so chill. Brown sugar brownie thing = life changing. Seriously this place is a GEM in newark. Probably the best pizza in delaware.

We've been getting their pizza for awhile now at the Sunday farmers market (well worth the 30min wait during the summer). Great that they finally have a spot off Cleveland. And you never have to touch Main st. Their pizzas are hand down the best around. The specials are always brilliant (Sweet Little Hen - chicken sage sausage, maple glazed onions and green apples.) and on point. Fresh ingredients, crust charred just enough, big enough to share (or if you're like me, small enough to hate yourself later.), and the service is always super friendly. After placing our order, our pizzas were out within 10 mins. Can't wait to watch this place grow. Hopefully bottled beers will be added next ;)

Tasty pizza, lots of topping choices, even one slice is very filling to me, but staff is not friendly.

  • Debra H.

The pizza was good but not amazing as reviewers have suggested. Best pies have fewest toppings otherwise soggy. Fave was artichoke spinach. Margherita also good. Besto Pesto good flavor but soggy. Good cocktails but small servings for price.

Went here to pick up dinner to go after work one day. It's walking distance from my workplace as well as main street and a lot of places in Newark which is a plus. The atmosphere is cute and cozy. Seems to be more of a lunch spot but it would be a great family spot for dinner as well. The prices were pretty normal for a wood fired pie. I ordered the Besto Pesto and it was amazing! They have a small deli-style case in the front with different pasta salads and sides. I almost liked my vegetarian pasta salad as much as I did the pizza. I will be back!

The best pizza I ever had. They change their special manu every two weeks using local ingredients. I love besto pesto. It's so fresh and tasty. Almost visit every week for their special pizza. Even though they don't have fancy decoration in their restaurant, their pizza will definitely blow ur mind.

  • Miyah L.

I would definitely have to say that this is the best pizza of Newark. Great staff and atmosphere. Only downside would be their opening hours, but I'm not complaining.

You got me at the music. There are lots of choices on the menu. Smells really great in here. Ordered to go. I am looking forward to the pizza. I have wanted to stop in as I drive by regularly. Is in a great location fore on my way home.

got take out here yesterday and it was great!!. We ordered "Steak your claim" - pesto, mushrooms and steak. Our pizza was cooked to order, took less than 10 minutes and the chef brought it out to us personally. Can't wait to go back!!

3.5 stars. I was feeling incredibly indecisive so I asked the woman working for a suggestion. Although friendly she didn't suggest anything. She basically read the ingredients of the vegetarian pizzas without any recommendations. I was the only customer present as it was a very snowy evening and the 2 men working didn't acknowledge my presence as they walked by me various times. They seemed a tad miserable so needless to say I didn't get the friendly vibe other yelpers have mentioned. The veggie primo pizza was very good. Dough was light and airy and the sauce was perfect for my taste. I loved the tomato pie but wish there was less crust, more sauce please! Ordered the green beans as well, spicy and scrumptious in my opinion. I really wanted to try the brownie but it was $5. (o-n-e brownie, $5.) The shop itself is clean and quaint. It's fun to see your pizza being made as you wait! The price point is a bit high for the size of the pizza so I'd be hesitant to order with a large group of people.

Moved to DE about 3 months ago and have tried a few pizza places. This is the best. The besto pesto is my favorite. We've had pizza to go and in house and each time it was amazing. Coming from NY, it's hard to beat their pizza but this place is in my top 3 including places at home!

Pretty good food. Everything tastes really fresh. I wish their crust was slightly thicker but that might just be the new yorker in me.

Just when I thought I had tried every good restaurant in the Newark region, we stumbled upon The Wood Fired Pizza Shop one night and was pleasantly surprised. Only being familiar with the owners' mobile 'wood fire pizza truck', this restaurant extends it's unique interface with a simple, but unique menu, drinks and seating area. (refer to the pictures, but know it's better in person!) The pizza was fantastic. We tried the Artie and Besto Pesto. Derived from local and naturally derived ingredients, food is prepared in a clean, wood oven with the owners turning out pie after pie with a smile. They were personable - even taking the time to ask if our meals were to our satisfaction. Proximity of their work space in relationship to the customer never changed from their truck set-up. Truly committed to their craft. Desserts are hearty and delicious, but not the central focus. An interesting aspect were their assorted pickles inside a well stocked display case. Plates, forks, knives were all of good quality - how else to consume it's food counterpart? :-) Other mentions - clean restrooms and ample parking. Good for family or impressing your date. Come on a Sunday for breakfast pizzas and free coffee. Yum!

Sunday brunch chicken sausage pizza with a fried egg--my favorite. We also can't go without getting pickles. The pickled mushrooms are the best, but they're not always on hand. If you're getting multiple pizzas to share, it's fun to brave a specialty pizza. They're always worth trying, but not worth the risk of having to eat it all yourself. For example, last weeks meatloaf pizza? Amazing, but too rich for one! I used to give best pizza near Newark to Aragilla, but these guys take the cake.

Amazing pizza, definitely a must have. Only inconvenience is there is no strict time that they're open. But I always stop by when I see that they are

A MUST in Newark! We have used the WFP truck for private parties for several years before they opened the restaurant. They are professional, friendly and talented chefs who make THE BEST pizza. Their gluten-free margarita pizza is superb! House-made bread and butter pickles tasted like a recipe handed down from a beloved grandmother. They have GF options, dairy-free options and are always willing to adjust for taste or allergy. GO, RUN to WFP. You're taste buds will thank you!

The best pizza in Newark!! Gourmet personal pizzas for reasonable prices. Only thing is that they aren't open enough hours during the week and later at night.

First and foremost, thank God for this place. I had almost given up hope on Newark's pizza scene. Turns out, Wood Fired IS Newark's pizza scene. This is legit, awesome pizza with local/organic ingredients. Don't waste your time on Main Street, nothing even begins to compare.

  • William H.

My wife and I have been going here a few times a week since it opened! Overall, it's the best pizza I have had in Delaware and is reasonably priced. The owners even took time to chat with us about our pizza experience, which was definitely appreciated. One recommendation: try a pizza that you wouldn't normally get... We've always been pleasantly surprised.

Menu is small but varies. They have daily recipes that have great variety. The quality and area was clean. I ordered 2 pizzas and they came out within 10 minutes. Super friendly staff too.

This place is excellent. The pizza, pasta salads, and tomato pie are excellent. The staff is friendly and personable. This has become a weekly stop for our family.

I'm a little confused as to the ratings being so high. Every time I've tried to go to this place they are always closed. My hubby finally had a chance to visit and pick up a pie to bring home and while I can't speak of the place since I didn't see it, the pizza looked good but small for the two of us. I think it was pricey for the size. The ingredients used did taste fresh but the pizza wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I will have to give this place one more try

Got a few pizzas for takeout... spicy Italian, margherita, and Italian beef. Sincerely the best pies I've ever had. Nice char, fresh toppings, and amazing crust. All future pizza orders will be from here.

We drove 2 hours to have lunch with friends and would drive there again not to have lunch with friends. These guys know their stuff. We ordered a Margarita, an Artie and a Gobbler something or other. YUM! Crust was crisp and tender. Sauce savory and not too sweet. Top notch ingredients. Loved it. They passed out a few samplers of homemade pickles and green beans. Loved both. Owners Matt and Nate are salt of the earth great guys. GO HERE!!! You will not be disappointed!

OMG I AM SOOOOOO GRATEFUL THAT THIS PLACE OPENED IN NEWARK!!! Finally another good vegan restaurant option! Their pizza is SO GOOD and I'm from right outside of NYC so I have a verrrrry high standard for pizza. They offer vegan cheese ($3 upcharge which I think is pretty reasonable) and have plenty of pizza options that can be made vegan. They also have a lot of side options, several of which are vegan. They're not skimpy at all on the toppings, everything tasted fresh and delicious, the sauce is really good, the pizza had the perfect amount of char on it,...everything about it was good! Oh and the place is really cute inside and they also play great music. If you can't tell, I'm really excited about this place!

We had delicious takeout from here a few nights ago. Fresh artisanal pizza... Local ingredients and unique combinations. Excited to have it available so close!

Wood Fired Pizza is a real treat. Although it looks like an Ace Hardware from afar, don't let your initial view turn you away. A cool redesign in the restaurant and smooth jazz playing in the background make for a nice meal. Pizzas are fresh, original, and taste great. Service is always fast and professional. Definitely worth the trip, especially with all the heavy Pizza Huts and Dominos that usually prevail around a major university. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Friendly staff, fun and simple atmosphere, and amazingly delicious pizza. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu but my personal favorites are the Pesto Cheese Bread for something snack sized and a tie between the Mamma Mia! and Besto Pesto for a full pie. Also, their Devil Beans (sweet and spicy pickled green beans) are incredible. They don't always have them so when you see 'em, get at least 2 containers.

Nice little pizzeria in Newark. Had the sausage and spinach pizza. It was really good. The peanut butter and dark chocolate brown sugar brownie was heavenly. I expect this place is popular with the UD students.

Matt, Nate and Ashley are always super welcoming at the Wood Fired Pizza Shop. We used to look forward to Sundays & Wednesdays in the summer for lunch. Now you can have their amazing pizza all year. While I still enjoy several conventional US pizza shops I find the specials at WPS have amazing taste and at least feel healthier if they aren't actually healthier. Their salads as sides to the pizza vary week to week; but are nonetheless right on par with their pizza. For those who shy away from fired pizza due to the tendency to char the crust, you'll be pleased to know that Nate's amazing skills and moving pizza through the oven avoid this extra char you find other places. While its great to have a fixed location I'm hoping they bring back the traveling pizza truck that started it all next year. We had Matt and Nate cater a party for us once and its still the talk of our friends. Would love to-do that again.

Stopped in while on a road trip due to reviews. They are right...pizza is amazing, fresh flavor and some unique options to go with the classics. The staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely come again next time we're in the area!!

Really good pizza. Ingredients are fresh and grown locally. The only pizza I've found that resembles what I've eaten in Italy. You won't be disappointed. They also give dough for the kiddos to play with while you wait.

This place is a little off Main St. where most of the restaurants are, but it's definitely worth the effort to get here. Authentic hand-crafted pizzas with a local flare.

Truly is the best pizza in time, truthfully the best pizza I ever had! Try the Pesto Pesto.

Wow by far some of the most creative chefs when it comes to pizza. I like good pizza and most of the time papa johns and Dominos just don't always make it for my self. Every Time i have gone to Woodfired i have been over pleased with the food and the customer service. I love their brunch it is an awesome twist on breakfast while still managing to incorporate pizza. Nate, Matt, and Ashley always bring a smile to my face. They know what i like and always satisfy my hunger in the best way possible. The most simple way to put it is that there are no good pizza restaurants in newark, de with the exception of one, being WoodFired. They use the freshest ingredients all from local farms and vendors and they make their pizza with lots of love. I would tell the whole worlds to eat pizza there if i could. Awesome food. Great Serice. And they always leave me smiling. What more could i ask for!

Not gonna break up the trend of posting anything less than 5 stars here. This place is it for awesome pies. Roasted garlic cloves? Aw hell yah! Fatty fat chunks of pancetta? Do it up? Thin crust? Well, I'm more of a deep dish guy myself (It's a Midwest thing) but no complaints here. Crust is great. The crew was fast and friendly. We came in at about 7pm on a Saturday and were the only ones there so it was easy to just stand around and have conversations with folks about root beer and pizza and whatever. Pizza came out and it was magnificent! Big thanks to this great crew of folks who are churning out pizza greatness. Yea, I'm a fan.
