Having just started working in the Newark area, a good, cheap , and fast lunch is my current Holy Grail. I also have a brand new criteria, on which to base my selection and thats free wi-fi. A month ago, I had seen the term Wi-Fi and didnt know or care what it meant. I recently purchased an Ipod touch and it has become my new obsession. Since its not the Iphone, Im reliant on Wi-Fi to get online. I noticed Newark Bagel and Deli, on Main St on one of my Dunkin coffee runs. I was in the mood for a Reuben so I decided to give it a try. I didnt even notice that anything said "Free Wi-Fi" but like a mental patient, Ive been checking everytime I walk into a new place. There were the sweet sweet wi-fi bars looking up at me from my Itouch saying, "surf away, loser!" I guess its not surprising that many places around here offer Wi-Fi. Its smack dab in the middle of the University of Deleware. Many places I go to there , I often find a student or proffesor on their laptop. NBD most likely gets crowded, but it was spring break so I walked right up to the counter and ordered. Like I said, I was in the mood for a Reuben, and they had it on the menu, which was quite extensive for a Bagel place. I think it even has Manhattan beat. Heres where the stars start to fall. When I ordered the Reuben, ,the kid at the counter looked at me funny. "He has to have heard of this!" , I thought Turns out I was supposed to signify if I wanted a Corned Beef Reuben or a Pastrami Reuben. I didnt realize there were such options when it comes to Reubens. Then he asked if I wanted sauerkraut on it! Isnt that what a Reuben is???!!! Maybe they are used to dumb college kids who have to custom order every sammy. Oh well, I sat to wait for my order, not minding the wait because I had my linked up Itouch. Just a quick note for the Thread Dwellers. This was the day on Yelp when Lemon Parties were being discussed. God forbid anyone looked over my shoulder that day and saw that horrifying picture. Thanks Steve! I ordered my Reuben to-go , in case I had to run. Big mistake. They handed me my box and I looked in before I left. Once again, its clear they dont understand the Reuben (or sandwiches in general) They slapped down the 2 sides of the Reuben , open faced (swiss and 100 island pointed up.) then they threw a ton of fries on top, so that I couldnt even see the sandwich. Picking them off didnt work as they were fused to the cheese and dressing. I realized I would have to eat this here because it was an absolute mess. I had to eat through most of the fries (really thin and bland) just to close the sandwich up. Oh yeah, they put the sauerkraut on the side...cold. When I finally got it looking somewhat like a Reuben, it was pretty darn good. But the trouble I had with it almost wasnt worth it. I was definitely late getting back to work. The Reuben and fries, without a drink, came to around $7. A little steep for me, but I will be back for the occasional treat or when I need to use the Wi-Fi. Im hoping it was an isolated incident, because a good deli for lunch is a great option. Im still looking for my Holy Grail in Newark. A place with great , fast ,food, free Wi-Fi and people who know what they are doing. A place thats not too crowded so I can make ny 1/2 hour luch break work. Am I a fool to expect such things? Maybe not, but we can all agree that Im a fool regardless.

Best breakfast bagel in town in my opinion. I usually go B E C on an everything bagel toasted. And when I'm feeling extra fat, I have them put a hash brown on the sandwich. Ohh ohh ohhhhhhhh. Call ahead. It's usually very busy.

One of those few times where I disagree with my fellow yelpers. Ordered the whole wheat everything bagel, toasted with jalapeño cream cheese with cucumbers & tomatoes and a side of hash browns. Subpar to say the least. Bagel wasn't toasted and my cream cheese was bland! No spice and jalapeños were barely present. The hash browns can beat it. Greasy and way too oily, just like the ones served at McD's. We also had the egg/cheese/tomato melt on an everything bagel. Bagel wasn't toasted making for sad cheese who struggled to even melt. Appearance of the restaurant wasn't too inviting. Trash cans overflowing and most tables needed to be cleaned.

Sorry but totes mediocre. I don't know what all the fuss is about. I went with a egg/cheese/tom breakfast Sammie on whole wheat everything. It was okay but not great. Eggs were fine, cheese was plentiful if not over the top. But They didn't even toast the bagel ... I didn't think I needed to express that desire-- for a warm breakfast bagel Sammie .... Isn't toasting like, a no brainer? At least ask, amiright? Anyway my dining pArtner went with same bagel but jalapeño cream cheese and a couple veggies. Same deal with hers, not toasted. Bagel was fine. CC was mad weak in the jalepeno dept. hash browns also ordered... Don't waste your time. Frozen crappy ones. I had a coffee and went I went to fill the cup, 4 of 5 coffee things were EMPTY. trash bins in store also overflowing and rather gross. I won't bother going back.

Garbage service I've been waiting for 20 mins for a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, Damn i could of made 30 by now. I hope none of the workers are business adminstration majors. Damn I'm asking for my money back.

Like can they get it together... Honestly hire some more people or something.... If you don't have a hour to come and get a single bagel don't come.

Bagels are awesome!! Best in Newark closes early so make sure you go for breakfast or lunch.

Must have been a rough morning, 25 min for a breakfast bagel. Poorly managed is my guess. Could have made this bagel at home.

What an awesome place to grab a quick breakfast sandwich! I've gone here plenty of times, and even when the place is packed with students and their orders, they still manage to get your order out as quick as possible. My favorite item is their bagel sandwich (toasted!) so definitely give one a try. Service is friendly, and they will even sometimes take the effort to remember you and see how you are doing. Don't forget you can order via phone (when it's not during a rush time) or online. It seems to take nearly equal amount of time to make the order versus in-person ordering.

Usually, the wait for a simple bagel sandwich is around 30 minutes in the morning when they are busy. This morning seemed less crowded than usual so I ordered my bagel sandwich, and started waiting. After 30 minutes of waiting, I approached to the manager and asked where my order was. She went to the kitchen and came back and told me that there were no more the type of bagel I asked so they did not put my order in. I would have waited 2 hours and they wouldn't even bother to let me know that my order won't be ready any time. I asked my money back (this also took another 5 minutes), left this place, and promised myself that I will never go back to this place.

My favorite breakfast in Newark. Unless you're hungover and desperate for delicious greasy breakfast there's little sense in going in on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The customer strain the deli sees on those days from groggy UD students can bring the place to its knees in terms of wait time for a sandwich. That said, you have to understand the amount of attention a store like this gets: we UD students virtually worship it and they make most of their money because of our Friday/Saturday night activities. Your welcome, Newark economy! P.S. At least for the bacon egg and cheese, you'll get more of everything (for free) by ordering it on toast instead of a bagel. Not free, but consider adding hash browns on the sandwich for extra risk of heart attack.

SLIGHTLY pricy for a breakfast sandwich, honestly, but delicious bagels. My only complaint is the service was a bit un-friendly, but to be fair - it was really busy.

Classic, Main Street staple. Bagel & cream cheese is the way to go -- their specialty and will not disappoint. Also very cheap. Lunch hour gets busy though when students are around. Mixed bag on some of their other sandwiches.

This place is the worst. They always get my order wrong & the wait is atrocious. I asked for 3 breakfast sandwiches toasted 2 with sausage & 1 with bacon, & I got 3 un-toasted all with gross green looking dried out sausage. Also, the coffee lids do not fit the cups; don't you realize that coffee makes a cup expand? This place is always crowded with hungover UD students & it's actually very gross. They definitely are in need of an updated health inspection.

Pros: Best bagels in Newark. Maybe all of Delaware. Cons: Poorly managed. No separate checkout line for call ahead orders which means you have to wait for 20+ minutes in a line that goes out the door to pick up your order which is bagged and ready on the counter when you arrive. They also consistently run out of bagels. Sadly the cons outweigh the pros for me. I have arrived one too many times to find they have no bagels. Odd as they are a bagel shop. I will not be back.

This place has quite the reputation in Delaware and I was very excited to try it out! I ordered a toasted bagel with eggs whites, cheese and tomato and it was delicious! However, I did have to wait over 30 minutes for my breakfast sandwich. I understand that you have to sometimes wait for good food, but my friends ordered at the same time as I did, and waited for me to get my food, I feel so bad! When I asked how much longer it would be, the employee said it should be soon, not really giving me a time frame.

Amazing hangover food! This place is THE go-to place for University of Delaware students and people in Newark in general. It is both tasty and filling, giving you the ultimate bang for your buck. The breakfast sandwiches are great. I would warn against getting a Reuben there. No offense, but goyim just don't know how to make a good Reuben. If you stick with more traditional breakfast sandwiches, you're good to go at this place!

Hands down best bagel place in Delaware. This was the spot to go on Sunday morning after a night of partying too. Everything is great. I usually get the whole wheat everything bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese or the vegetable cream cheese. I've gotten their chicken salad sandwich and typical breakfast bagel (egg, cheese, sausage) and they were great as well. Would give this place a 5 star if they had better customer service. There's this guy that has been working there since I can remember (blonde haired guy) that seems to have an attitude often. He's never given me a hard time but he isn't very helpful and if you don't know exactly what you want he seems irritated.

I had a whole wheat everything bagel with egg and cheese. The bagel tasted very good and was seasoned on both sides. It tasted sweet next to the saltyness of the seeds. Next time, I would like to try the egg bagel. There will be a next time. I took off a point because their manner of calling out the orders was disorganized. They numbered each receipt and none of them were coming out in order. Numbers who were far after me had their orders coming out almost immediately. It was kind of annoying.

No exaggeration, I have been to this place upwards of 400 times. Working right next door almost my entire 5 years of college (and constantly being tempted by the smell of bacon) certainly didn't help. There is no breakfast sandwich in the world better than sausage, egg whites, and pepper jack cheese on one of their whole wheat everything bagels. The chicken salad is also awesome. I'd suggest getting the regular chicken salad sandwich, the club sandwich is overpowered with thousand island dressing and way too much bacon. I love this place so much that it often required me to hold back my hatred for greek life - mainly loud, awful sorority girls ordering scooped out bagels and douchebags in flourescent tshirts talking about the previous night's frat mixer - in order to satisfy my hungover breakfast sandwich cravings on the weekend. If you try and go here anytime between 9-11am, call your order in and be prepared to wait - as the line is almost always out the door. If you go in at an off peak time, you can get your order in less than 5 minutes. Out of all the places in Newark that I miss since moving, this is definitely at the very top of my list. I've yet to find a bagel shop in Philadelphia that comes remotely close.

Great sandwiches, breakfast or otherwise. I usually get the cajun turkey club on toasted wheat; I dig that they put russian dressing and coleslaw on it. They forget to toast the bread sometimes. Good place to get lox & scallion cream cheese on a bagel. Their croissants look amazing. Get there by 10:30 on the weekends if you don't want to wait in a huge line.

the bagels are okay. they're nothing compared to the ones up in north jersey though, so they'll never impress me that much. they are definitely the best around here though, and my go-to bagel place while at school. however, the service is AWFUL. the people at the registers and taking orders seem so pissed off to be at work every day and always seem irritated. the orders also take FOREVER. i almost lost it while waiting over 10 minutes for just an everything bagel with an egg on it. i looked in the back and everyone just looked to be taking their sweet time and not caring about getting food to customers quickly. the girl standing next to me even said something to me too about how long she's been waiting and how ridiculous it was. my boyfriend got chicken salad on bread and it took almost just as long, and people after us were getting their orders first. definitely the best bagels around here, but not sure if they're worth the attitude from the staff and the extra time it takes waiting for food.

Newark Deli & Bagel - locally referred to as NDB - is Newark's closest replication of a Manhattan deli. They offer a great selection of fresh bagels, sandwiches and other breakfast and lunch items. However, there are two caveats: - Your best bet is to get there early (before "pretending to study for a psych exam" crowd at 9am during the week and the rush of hungover guys with basketball jerseys and Ray-Bans at around 10am on the weekends). - Unless you are the only person in the restaurant (which is rare), never order eggs. While their egg sandwich is the finest in town, it often commands a wait of 20+ minutes, even with a modest crowd. You are better off going with bagels and cream cheese or a deli sandwich, which arrive pretty fast.

I honestly believe people rate this place so high because they don't know of a quicker breakfast place with more selection. Not my first choice of breakfast (the breakfast/hotdog cart is!). My bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches always come out greasy and most of the time end with me getting sick. Bagels are fine but even with an increase in staff they are still very unorganized and even forgot to make my boyfriend's food (we were there for an extra 20 min). Stuff like that happening is unfortunately common. The place is overrated and you have to pay to park if you don't walk.

This place has the best bagels I've ever had. I seriously can't find anything that compares anywhere. The chicken salad is delicious as are all of the breakfast sandwiches. The only negative is the line of college students out of the door at all times, but honestly the bagels make up for it. There is a reason that locals continue to brave the crowds of college students throughout the year. This place is BOMB. A must go for breakfast anytime you are in Newark.

Some of my best moments of college revolve around this place. There was NOTHING BETTER than waking up at noon on a Sunday after the most intense weekend ever and dragging yourself off to a little bit of hangover heaven, a.k.a. Newark Deli & Bagels. The food here is on par with any well-respected, authentic deli you'll find in NYC. We're talking perfectly made bagels, crispy and smooth on the outside, soft and chewy on the outside... Some of the best schmear around... Amazing salads and sandwiches.... You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and almost every item is under 5 or 6 bucks!! Yes, it's popular, and yes, the line is sometimes almost out the door, but they'll almost always get you in & out in under 5 or 10 minutes. I've been out of college & the DE area for a while now, and I *still* get fierce cravings for their salt bagels with egg and cheese. Nothing else has filled their place in my heart. GO HERE... Although if you're in Newark, DE, you probably already have :) I'd give it a thousand stars if I could!

Came back here on a weekday for breakfast. Ordered egg on a whole wheat everything bagel. Good. Bagel really fresh and good. Only place I've ever seen that carried the whole wheat everything bagels! By the time we left place was standing room only.

Been going to this place off and on for a number of years The current weekend cashier/manager? Is awesome. The guy literally can connect with any customer you for old. This guy has a great attitude and knows the local history of the area. Food is decadent and delicious.

Standard sandwich/bagel place. Hideously crowded during at lunchtime during the week when school is in session.

Best bagels in Delaware. I love their whole wheat everything with scallion cream cheese (but I wish they had it in low fat)!

Great bagels, especially the everything and whole wheat everything. Great bacon, egg, and cheese. I haven't tried their new muffins yet, but the old ones were the best I've ever had. Hands down the best bagel shop in town. The only drawback is long lines from students during the semester. Summer/winter and early morning are fine though. The seating area is pretty cramped during the semester too. I recently moved to Boston and I'm still looking for something that can touch Newark Deli & Bagel.

These bagels are legit..being from Long Island and ex New Yorker I know good bagels and these are real and very good..don't bother getting a bagel anywhere else in ncc because the rest are not worth it..only other place that compares in de is surf bagel in lewes and they are a clear notch below..go early on weekends..particularly Sunday or you will be competing with hungover UD students for the goods..

Excellent bagels that hit the spot in the morning. The scallion cream cheese is excellent as well as the bagel breakfast sandwiches. Lots of coffee and iced coffee - no brewed iced tea. :( Long wait on the weekends but it tends to move fast. Decently priced, too. I wish they had more tables but take your sandwich to-go and sit on a bench on the Green.

Their homemade croissants are absolutely delicious! Not just your average bagel store. Some interesting cream cheese spreads to boot. Lots of college kids in and out, but usually can grab a table. Service was pretty good and my order came up pretty quick. Even though it's right on Main Street, this is like a hidden gem. You can't tell by non-descrip name and facade that this is a really great place.

It's been a long time since I lived in Philly and could get fresh bagels and bagel breakfast sandwiches of quality. They are fantastic here and very quick, I can get my breakfast sandwich in less than 5 minutes WITH three other people ahead of me. Real eggs. My only complaint is the cheap orange cheese but honestly it tastes so good... who cares. Coffee is pretty bad, but standard if you're not a bean snob like I am.

    (5)
  • Julie B.

Fantastic bagels! Hands down, the best in the area and worth all 5 stars. If you go on the weekend, be prepared to wait, but it's worth it. PS If you get a bagel with egg, cheese and any kind of breakfast meat - ask them to add a hashbrown to the sandwich. Pure deliciousness!

  • Diane P.

WOW. It's cheap. It's fast. It's good. On a graduate student's budget, I always run here for breakfast or lunch, and every time... I'm more and more impressed with their friendly service and delicious foods. The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu, and they can be brutally honest about what is on it. Their bagels are absolutely amazing, in that they are soft and pillowy... a bit chewy... What (I believe) a perfect bagel should be. Everyone that comes here with me raves about how awesome this place is and vows to always come back. Downsides: it's always crammed with undergrads as it's right between the Green and the Mall and the fact that they only do credit cards for amounts greater than three dollars.
