Kate's has good food and drink specials most nights. And their food is good for a bar. However at night it tends to get very crowded to the point where it is not much fun.

Kate's was great and a laid back place until it started packing up at the end of 2005, now it must be worse for those turning 21 since the bars are clearing out on Main Street. I loved their lobster bisque and it was lovely when they had their $2-22 ounce special on Tuesdays last year.... It was a great place to start our bar crawl challenge.

It's your typical college hangout. I graduated a couple of years ago and Kate's is always on the agenda whenever I come back to visit. Their nachos are really really good. The only downside to this place is the doucebag bouncers, who really let the minimal amount of power go to their heads.

As a restaurant, this place is good but not cheap. The food here is just basic stuff like burgers, etc. and is actually pretty good, but expensive relative to other restaurants in town, unless you utilize one of the specials, like nacho night. The portions are large, however. I can also say the desserts are pretty good. As a bar, this place loses, in my opinion, because it never has any interesting beers on tap. This place seems to cater too much to the undiscriminating crowds of just-want-to-get-drunk people. Just about the only drink this place does well is sangria--they use liberal quantities of fresh fruit, and don't make it too sweet. Atmosphere wise, it's dark and very lively, but nice. There's a very nice deck on the street, which would be quite enjoyable if it weren't for all the smokers. The service is alright; on the busy nights they sometimes seem to be a bit understaffed. Bottom line: Kate's is a place that I'll be happy to meet a group of friends at if they choose to go there, but I wouldn't suggest it or choose to go there on my own.

The first time I attempted to go here was on homecoming day after the game. Boy, was it packed! From the outside I could see people crammed against each other in the windows; the front patio had people spilling over, down the stairs and to the sidewalk. My immediate though about that was "Onto the next place!". Today I had the opportunity to go back for some drinks and some appetizers. Since it was after 10 on Sunday the appetizers were half off until 2. I had the French onion soup and it was great for a cold day like today. I also had the buffalo wings which were really good and flavorful, but for my taste they lacked a little when it came to the spice department. To wash down my dinner I had a Ketel One Gimlet which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's truly a great place to hang out.

Alright fine. Out of years of sordid spit-hatery upon this saloon of sloppy college drunks dizzy from Buds and 90s nights, I've given in to actually looking forward to Tuesdays. Which is why, a mere half-hour away from my nacho night weekly meeting with the Nacho Night Crew of grown-up kids, I'm bouncing my leg in excitement. Kate's isn't all that bad if you go there around 7:30pm for any of the specials. --ignoring the fact that I actually started the New Year here, I'm still not sure how that happened-- The loud pounding 80s/90s/Foreigner crap hasn't started, and the skan--ahem--chicks haven't found themselves smashed yet, ready to pounce into the next male wallet. It's smooth sailing, drinking, and noshing that early. The hockey game is usually on upstairs, too, which is why I politely ask to be sat up there if the game is on. As far as service goes, just take your $5 tab and be glad that's all you have to pay for nachos and a pitcher. The staff is usually pissed they had to show up because, for a plate of nachos and a pitcher to a rowdy table, they might make $3. I've always liked the rustic, history-choked tavern appearance to the place, and if you're from Newark, like me, you probably have some family ties to it, like me.

This is totally a college student type restaurant/bar. If you have kids or are particular about hygiene, dont even venture. The place is really dirty.

I'm not a frat boy (Never even went to U of D), I don't drink too much, I've gone during regular dinner hours and my expectations on any place are more than decent (being acknowledged, cleanliness); despite that (!), I still manage to have a kick ass time here, every time. Maybe it's just because I hang out with Carl and Patty. The Chicken Sanchez and the crab cakes (of course) are awesome. The Chesapeake Chicken is amazing! The vibe is good and pretentions are low. The table usually wobbles a bit and their homemade sangria is awful, but those small things just keep this place 'human'.

Loud, dark and dirty - perfect for undergrads or poor grad students. The sandwiches are pretty uninspiring and the nachos are generally swimming in a warm pool of oil.

Overall a good experience. However, the Buffalo boneless wings tastes very salty and sour, I had one bite and I stopped eating the wings. Servers are very good-looking and welcoming.

I went tonight with 8 people. I have to say i wasn't impressed. Service was slow. They were packed however so they do a good business regardless. I sure wouldn't wait to eat here though. For appetizers we had the pretzels, nachos and cheesesteak egg rolls. The pretzels were good, the nachos were decent and the egg rolls were terrible. Entrees were a cheesesteak, French dip, ruben, Caesar salad, steak, cheese burger, and southern fried chicken salad. My son liked the steak. The rest of us.... We walked away from the table wondering what was for dinner. We won't be back.... Except for drinks :)

Alright so this review will be to the point and in two parts about my visit on Friday, August 21, 2015. 1) They need to educate their door staff on IDs. I had to wait for 12 minutes outside with my friends just because they didn't know how to read a DC issued drivers license. Washington, DC changed their license style on May 1, 2014...over a YEAR ago. Yet the three gentleman outside the door still had no idea what a legal DC drivers license looked like and believed my 100% government issued drivers license was fake. They took it upstairs. Brought a manager out. I was told "the reason I think it's fake is because I don't see a hologram". Like dude, ITS REAL. Apparently the establishment didn't have an updated ID book either (which should be a priority for a bar). After 10 minutes of standing outside with my friends and having countless people walk by and inside, they finally go to another bar and get an updated ID book and realize...OH GEE, it IS a real government issued drivers license. GO FIGURE. Again, get an updated ID book, educate the staff. 2) Delicious lemon drop shots.

Klondike Kate's, which is in the main strip at the University of Delaware, is the perfect place to go if you're planning to get sloshed, or looking for food after you've gotten sloshed. Not that this kind of food is a bad thing, and it's probably perfect for the usual clientele, but it's not something I'd have all the time. Don't get me wrong. Service was good, and the outside seating was a great way to people watch as we got a feel for the campus the night before new student orientation. My meal had some really nice highlights, but it was uneven. The fried chicken was too greasy, and the crab too salty. The zucchini were really well seasoned, but they were two different colors with half of the batch looking like it had been boiled too long. At the table there was also a rack of ribs which was really excellent. The ribs were meaty and fall-off-the-bone tender, but a bit too much fat was left on them which proved to be a surprise under the sauce. We started with the cheesesteak eggrolls which were OK but, like the chicken, soaked up a bit too much oil. Everything was also a bit too salty. So, I don't think I'd make an effort to return but, since it was half-price entree Sunday, I'm going to be generous with my stars and give them three.

Easter Sunday. Dropping my daughter off at UD after her spring break. This actually was my second time at Kate's. Both times I was disappointed. The first time I ordered empanadas, and they were so over cooked I could not cut them with my fork. I sent them back and ordered a NY strip steak. It was actually pretty good. This time my wife, daughter and I all ordered the NY strip steak. We all asked for medium rare, but we got three different temps. Daughters was well done mine was medium and wife's was medium rare. Kind of a disappointment. Shouldn't be difficult to get three steals for the same table cooked to the same temp. As an app, we ordered the buffalo chicken nachos, and they were very good. I will actually be trying to recreate these at home. On a negative note, both my wife and I used the restrooms, and we both agreed that they were absolutely disgusting. The floors were littered with paper towels, and the floor in the men's room was wet. Just gross. Since it was Sunday night the entrees were half price. Almost makes all the other problem overlookable. If I do ever return, it would only be on a Sunday because the prices were so good.

I was on Main Street in Newark, DE for business and was completely surrounded by plenty of options for lunch. I have been to Kate's before but it has been quite a little while. Once I saw a very welcoming A-frame sign reading 1/2 price wings, I finalized my decision. Guerilla marketing at its finest! Hey, I had full intentions of going salad but who can pass up a good deal? This place was cranking during the lunch hour. The outside patio as well as the inside seating areas were full. I saw an open seat at the bar, so off I went. I had a great view of a large HD TV (ESPN) on the left hand wall. The only drawback here was that the bar stool did not compliment the counter at all. Listen, I am no Shawn Bradley, but the stools were more than a tad too low for the much higher seated counter. I made a comment to the bartender about this and he informed me that it certainly was not the first time he heard that. Looking around at the other guests at the bar, it really was quite silly looking. Other than wearing a Patriots hat (guess it could have been worse), the bartender was awesome. He was super friendly towards his customers and didn't miss a beat with the drink refills. So surprise, I went with the half price wings. They were solid and quite reminiscent of those that you would find at your local Hooters. They were heavily breaded but not drenched in sauce like you find at H's. The accompanying blue cheese was a little bit too runny though. This would have been a solid four stars from me if it wasn't for the bar stools. I just can't get over how a mainstay like Kate's can get away with this. With that being said, I do like Kate's and look forward to my next visit to the UD area.

YUM! The wings here are deeeeeelicious. Everytime I go, my family asks me to bring some home they taste good even as leftovers. The crab bisque is also super thick, flavorful and creamy - pretty filling and tastes like I'm at a high end seafood restaurant. The atmosphere is very divey and chill, esp since its on a college campus. My one complaint is when I last went, there were at least 5 wasps surrounding me and my meal at all times. I know this probably isn't their fault but I've also never experienced this anywhere else despite sitting outdoors at various restaurants in the summer/spring time. There seemed to be a nest nearby as other customers were having the same issue.

Loved this! My colleague had crab cakes, I had the French beef dip. Very, very good. We sat outside because it was so beautiful. Loved the people watching. Our server was excellent. They were busy, but he was very attentive.

Stopped here on the way through to Philly. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food; the wings were awesome, and the pretzel dippers were delicious. The atmosphere was fun, we ate out on the patio at night which allowed us to see the college town atmosphere in full swing.

Waitress was busy with other tables so ignored us most of the night. I ordered the full rack of ribs but only ate a quarter of them, as they were fatty and full of ligaments. Also ordered sour kraut, it came out cold and with no seasoning, literally out of the bag. Others ordered burgers and fries, they were soggy and the fries were cold. We asked for ketchup for the fries, it never came until we complained about the poor service 40 minutes later. They ended up giving us a 15% discount, unfortunately I have to give 1 star due to the horrible food and service.

I've got to say it! I enjoy Kate's on 95% of my visits. Burgers and wings... Beer is usually nice and cold. I can only recall one time were the beer was bitter...likely from dirty tap/lines...? PLEASE KEEP THE JALAPEÑO BEER CHEESE SOUP COMING! Meet the owner one time...laid back great guy.

I give this bar three stars because of all of my fond memories when I attended the University of Delaware. As a bar, this place rocks! That being said, I visited this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon and had the pleasure of sitting outside. I ordered the blackened tuna sandwich and it was so overcooked that unfortunately I almost couldn't eat it. They'll always have a soft place in my heart. Go there for the fun, have a few drinks and maybe order food from somewhere nearby on your way home.

This is the worst experience I have ever had. Upon arrival the lack of diversity was obviously noticeable. The hostess sat my friend and I at a table and told us the server will be with us shortly. The server arrived to our table and took our drunk order. I ordered a beer and asked for a straw she never came back with a straw. I had to ask another server to bring one over and thanked him once he arrived. I held my hand out to reach for the straw but, the male server decided that it was more respectful to go around my hand and place the straw on the table instead. The female server arrived again and took our order. I asked her were the burgers half off as advertised outside the establishment. She stated that they are half off and I ordered the double patties for half off. The burgers took over 30 minutes to arrive and lacked flavor and taste. I received the check and was charged $16 for a half off burger. I called the manager soon after to gain clarification but was told that the server upgraded the size without my permission and I would not recieve the correct amount back. I told her how wrong that was to be charged for something without my permission. She stated she did not care and I paid so I would not recieve anything back. This was my first and last time at this racist establishment.

I was excited to visit with may daughter as I used to come to Klondike Kate's back in the day. Food was terrible. Crab cake was probably canned crab and was fishy(and still sitting in my stomach), the french dip sandwich my husband has-just fair with no real taste and my daughter could not even eat a quarter of the turkey panini sandwich. So glad there are many other food choices on Main Street....will never have to go back.

Having lived in Newark for 6 years, I have been to Klondike Kate's often. This place is always clutch; you can never go wrong when you come here. The vibe is awesome here because of the history that the building holds (used to be a jail in the basement, a barber place, have an ice rink, etc). Dishes that I've always loved there include the Whimpy Slider Burdgers and the classic nachos. Their half price nacho nights are a hit! This is a great place to get lunch/dinner. At night though, unless you're a college student, you may want to go somewhere else. All of the U of D students come here to dance and drink.

I do not know what happened to this place but in the last 6 months there has been a steady decline in food quality and service. On half price sandwich day there quality has gone down, now its more bread and less filling..service just sucks!

Kate's food is some of the best no main street! All of the staff is quick and friendly, and quick to refill drinks before they're empty (one of my pet peeves). Also, there's no deal like their half priced entrees on Sundays! Bar scene is alive and popping after 9pm too!

Waitress was good... OK, on to the food. Food service was slooooow. Two in our party had the chicken parmesan, and the chicken was tough and over cooked. The pasta was very dense. I had the chicken sandwich, and it was over cooked and tough as well. The nachos were decent but a little bland. They had a small serving of chili and refried beans with them. And a small (1 tablespoon) cup of salsa on the side.

Been coming here for years and know Main St UD well. The food is always amazing here, they have a real chef last I checked. Bar staff is the best! Friendly and helpful. Top 2 on Main St with Iron Hill. Only complaint is if you sit outside during nice weather service is slow but that is common place on Main when weather is nice.

Came here for dessert on the patio. The inside was cute too. I had the peanut butter chocolate layer cake and a cup of tea, while my friend had the blueberry chocolate chip cheesecake. The cake was impressive and delicious but my tea came in a mug that was somewhat dirty. I realize that most people probably wouldn't have noticed but I'm a stickler for spotless cups, dishes, and utensils. I would come here again to try lunch or dinner.

After dinner at a nearby restaurant we decided to take a walk along Main Street, through the University of Delaware campus, and found ourselves at the corner of Main and Choate Streets, staring at the three-story building with green awnings. The scent of beer was in the air, and the crowds of people seemed lively, so we found a table outside on the patio to enjoy a brew and watch the parade of people up and down Main Street. Klondike Kate's seems to be THE local hangout for the University of Delaware college crowd, and the pick-up action was hot & heavy even for a mid-week summer's night. This is where the Jersey Shore frat boys are busy trying to impress the Atlantic Coast cuties, and everyone is having a good time. Yo! My business partner and I ordered a couple of drinks (I got talked into getting the 20 ounce Arrogant Bastard *harrumph*), and we had some great laughs watching the fun. The beer menu has a lot of the standards plus Dogfish Head, Magic Hat, and a tasty little thing called Victory Golden Monkey. My buddy stuck to the red wines, and said he looked much more sophisticated sipping on a Merlot than me with a frosty mug of beer. As the evening wore on we decided to order a small plate of nachos which were loaded with everything but the kitchen sink, and absolutely HUGE. We didn't try any of their other food, but the servers were busy running trays of sandwiches, burgers, appetizers, salads, pizzas, and ribs to the nearby tables. Klondike Kate's looks like a nice place to eat earlier in the evening, or perhaps for a weekend lunch, but later at night the mood shifts to the college crowd.

My boyfriend is a U of D grad. Pretty much since I met him he has spoken highly of the nachos, so when we spent the day in Newark coming here for lunch was a no brainer. The "small" nachos were huge!! They were perfect classic nachos, with cheese, chili and the works (lettuce, tomatoes, scallions, jalapeños, black olives, sour cream, salsa). We went on Memorial Day so the burgers were 1/2 priced, not sure if that's a Monday thing or not. Plus they had an extra menu of special burgers. From that special menu I got the Fried Cheese Burger, which was amazing. It had fried provolone, onion rings and a horseradish aioli sauce that was out of this world. I also got a classic margarita on the rocks that was awesome. The bf seemed to really love his Texas Burger. If we ever go back to Newark, I know we will definitely return to this institution.

The food here was great (the waffle fries where to die for) but sadly I can only give this restaurant 3 stars due to the service. Although the place was not super crowded it took nearly an hour to get our food, and within that hour our waitress only checked in twice. I'm really disappointed because I think this place has a lot more potential, I hope that next time I visit things will be better.

I've been here a few times over the years, but, I was very disappointed today. Three of us were there for brunch. Two of us ordered drinks (a Mimosa and a Bloody Mary). The drinks were watery, which is fine, if you're catering to the already drunk college crowd who don't know the difference, but, not when you're making drinks for adults. The Bloody Mary tasted of water, tomato, and Old Bay. It was not impressive at all. The brunch fare was okay. The potatoes were dry, and the sausage was overcooked. I was less than impressed with my visit there today.

I visited during restaurant week with 2 friends. We started off with the Brie in Puff pastry appetizer, because we are on a Brie kick after having the most amazing blackened Brie at BlackFinn in Charlotte. This brie could not compare to BlackFinn, but was still very, very good. It was creamy brie cheese spread with apricot preserves and wrapped in puff pastry baked with sliced almonds, served with strawberries, apples and grapes. Two of us both had the 3 course dinner for $28 which included Caribbean Grilled Scallops, Grilled jumbo scallops skewer over avocado, mango and arugula salad and finished with sweet balsamic, Horseradish Sirloin which was Grilled 8oz sirloin steak, topped with wild mushrooms in a horseradish cream sauce, served with slice roasted potatoes and asparagus, and Banana Chonga Ala mode for dessert. The other friend had the 2 course meal for $22 which was Sashimi Tuna, Black pepper and sugar grilled seared Ahi tuna served with julienne cucumbers and ginger salad, teriyaki sauce and soy sauce and Cider Pork Tenderloin, Grilled Pork tenderloin marinate in apple cider served over mashed potatoes and julienne vegetables topped with a caramelized onion sauce. The scallops were seared perfectly and the mango was ripe and juicy, but there was not enough balsamic. Our friend's ahi tuna was better, there was a lot more tuna, it was rare and melted in our mouths, and the sauce was amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly rare, but there was very little horseradish cream sauce at all, and we could not taste the horseradish. We actually forgot there was even supposed to be horseradish until we reread the menu later. The vegetables were crisp and seasoned well. Our friend liked his pork tenderloin. The Banana dessert was fantastic! It was unique and different, and much larger than we expected. It was almost like an eggroll, but it was filled with banana, cinnamon, ice cream and caramel and it was absolutely delicious!

Food ok, we ate outside on a lovely day which is where i would want to be-the place is not clean (avoid the bathrooms) but service was good and the patio is good place to have a beer with family or friends. I left this at 3 stars since it seems this is the standard for a college beer and burger joint.

Been in and out of this place for over 25 years, and it's just as consistent as always. 10 of us with kids had dinner here and they stuck us upstairs in our own room with a dedicated server. The hostess handled us great, which is hard to find in a college town employing mostly kids that don't think. Service was great, the nachos big and tasty, and everyone liked their entree. The beer selection fit us all as well. While most of my experience here was late nights at the bar...the food never disappoints when we come back to Newark.

Atmosphere and wait staff are nice, a four star aspect, the selection of food and the back story of the restaurant are a five star experience, however, the time it took to get our food was a bit ridiculous, the orders came out wrong, but the burger was cooked correctly(rare), even though it was rather bland. Over all it was an okay experience, we did come on half price burger day, so our bill was only 13 bucks for the two of us, that's not bad. I might come back and try something else one day... Maybe.

Really just came in for a few drinks, but the appetizers sounded so good that we gave a few of them a try. It was busy the day after a big football game, but the service was still fast and friendly. Beers were good and the apps were all tasty. The mahi bites were great, the humus was very good, the baked cheese was ok but should have come with some bread to dip it in. We walked by much later after we had been at Ali Baba across the street and Klondike Kate's was mobbed. Definitely looks like a big nightclub/bar type place after maybe 11 or 12.

Can you say yum and do the happy dance at the same time. That was the reaction that I had at my cousins wedding reception at Historic Sinking Springs Herb Farm that was catered by Klondike Kates. Not only was the food absolutely phenomenal the service and effort the staff put into their part of the wedding was outstanding. Much thanks to Lizette, Aubrey, and John the reception was a smashing success. Actually my experience started the night before the wedding when we were setting up the tables in the loft of the barn. The three staff members showed up the night before to get everything ready which they did with much care and attention to detail. I noted they paid special attention to the fact the reception was in a barn which created issues that they dealt with expertly. All through the setup process with smiles and courtesy posturing their work alongside of our activities to get their part setup. It should be mentioned that this included maneuvering single-file stairs to the second level of the barn. The day of the wedding they were on-time and efficiently got the remainder of their setup accomplished. The meal had an absolutely wonderful surprise. Really the surprise upstaged the chicken, roast beef, and barbeque. All of these were delightful and considering we were out in the middle of absolutely no civilization I was impressed that each of these were succulent, moist, and ready for devouring. The buffet provided bread for sandwiches or your choice of a dinner roll could make a plate if you like. All the accompanying vegetables and potatoes were very hot and fresh. All of it was absolutely wonderful. The selection of venue, caterer, and the theme was geared towards nontraditional. So instead of cake they had several most wonderful pies that were to die for. I had the pumpkin pie that hit all the flavors of fall, was moist, delicately placed on a delightful crust. None of these fine foods really kept up with the surprise. It was a butternut squash soup that really held a most excellent flavor. Providing both a perfect warmth that reminded you of a warm blanket (I am from Florida and was cold) with the creamy buttery texture of a pureed mouthwatering squash soup with a hint of sweetness. This is the kind of soup that you cannot stop eating until it all gone. I was told that this was prepared especially for the bride and groom. What a wonderful tribute to have such a fine dish presented to newlyweds. Eating this way begs me to schedule another trip to the cold frigid north.

Delicious! Great restaurant with hard working and kind employees. The food is superb and there is a deal every day! Mondays- 1/2 price burgers, Tuesdays- 1/2 price nachos, Wednesdays- 1/2 prices sandwiches and salads until 4 PM, then 1/2 price kid's meals from 4:00 PM-close, Thursdays- 1/2 price wings, Fridays- 1/2 price salads/ sandwiches, Saturdays- half price steak, Sundays- half price entrees. Great service and stellar food. There is no comparison between Klondike's and Iron Hill Brewery, its rival. Klondike Kate's food is much better than Iron Hill's as well as cheaper, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. Most people think that Iron Hill is more upscale than Klondikes, but this is not true. Klondike's entree menu is far better than Iron Hill's and the prices are so much more reasonable. Many people complain about how noisy and boring the atmosphere is at Klondike's. They have added on a secluded area where you can eat at by request. If you're in the mood for classy food, go on a Sunday, eat in the secluded, back area, and order an entree. The food will be the same as Iron Hill's, more than half as less, and your experience will be great. Best restaurant of all of Main Street!

I just want to start off by saying that this place's target audience (drunk college kids) probably won't be reading this review and so maybe I won't change too many minds. But my god is this place awful. The first time I went here, a friend at UD said it was quick and the food was decent, so I ordered a burger. I know what you're thinking - "how can you mess up a burger?" Well, I don't have an answer for that. The best word I can think of is "soggy" - the bun, the meat, the lettuce and tomatoes. I'm shuddering just thinking about it. But hey, maybe just stay away from the meat? Going off the recommendation and willing to forgive a fluke, I tried again this past week and ordered a chicken caesar wrap. Now, this next part is going to be a little more subjective than the burger part, but everything was WRONG. Not "slightly off" or "almost there," flat out BAD. I love a good wrap, and this was not one. I only wish that chicken could come back to life just to peck whoever made that wrap. The texture reminded me of oysters (when unexpected, it feels like you just ate a loogie), and the caesar dressing was closer to vinegar than dressing. The lettuce was consistently brown and the tomatoes were probably rerouted somewhere during shipping because they tasted weeks old. Another bad experience, and I've given up. I'm honestly shocked that this place has so many positive reviews, although they do seem to all focus on the price. If you really need a cheap meal, there's a trove of simple restaurants all down the street, so skip this hole. If you want to go I can't stop you (which is reassuring I'm sure), but don't say I didn't warn you. Joey

We came here to have drinks and to go dancing, it's your typical pub and a pretty big dance floor. It was hard to get the bartenders attention and we had to remind the bartender a few times about our drinks but it was an overall good experience

I've had good and bad times here. Definitely great for eating but not for drinking. Upstairs is small so it's hard to dance. For some reason this place is sorority and fraternity central so if you're into that sh*t, Kate's is for you. For some reason the line is always 40 people long and it's ALL dudes. I don't get it. But as stated before, it's really good for dining. They have a large menu and everything is good.

I've been here a few times now. Enough times that I need to yelp about it. I wanna start with the fact that I have never been here past 5pm. And I would assume that this place turns into a different kinda of beast after the sun goes down. WIth that said I really like Klondike Kate's My girlfriend is a grad student at UD so being a good BF I come down and pay here a surprise visit. Now I grew up in DE and spent many nights on main st. So I know KK can be a douche magnet. OK enough about me let get to the nitty gritty. KK is a joint on Main Street in Newark DE in the middle of the UD campus. I've been there 3-4 times and every time I've had a good time. The service has always been great. The servers have always been nice and attentive as well as well informed about the specials and menu. They do have great specials like half priced sandwiches or half priced nachos. The food is decent, it is bar food like sandwiches burgers, nachos, and so on. But like I said the food is decent. It's tasty flavorful and I've never left unsatisfied. I've had the burgers, the burger patty is smaller than the bun!! That's kinda of a turn off. As well as the french dip delicious. And the portions are a nice size. As a man who usually cleans his plate I've actually left KK with to go boxes!! All in all KK is a decent place with decent food with great specials!!

Went here for lunch with a friend and we had their hot boneless wings. We were sitted right away and the waitress was very attentative with our drinks and getting our order. The wings were very good and had a nice crispiness to them. The fries weren't anything great and were lacking salt and overall flavor. You can tell they just came out of a bag. I would go back for lunch again, nothing outstanding but good for a quick bite.

Good for a burger, good for drinks and nachos. This college town bar/restaurant is a standard for UDEL students and their families. We had lunch today including a nice French Onion soup with the right amount of cheese and a great oniony soup base. A big pile of nachos with loads of cheese, jalapeno, beans and lettuce. Entrees included a turkey burger (too well done), pulled pork sandwich and a Reuben. Good bar food is as far as I go on the eats. Now drinks, check their Sunday bloody Mary bar, very cool!

I had the chicken walnut pecan salad. Menu name escapes me. It was excellent. Fresh greens, right amount of Gorgonzola, cranberries, apples and very tender grilled chicken. My dining partner had the fall of the bone ribs. Literally fell off the bone. Service was good for a very busy packed place. Would come back. Nice bar area with lots of taps.

Dirty and run-down on the inside. Burger was undercooked, mushy, and rather bland tasting. Only good thing about the place is the sweet potato fries. The UD grad students I was having lunch with say it gets insanely crowded on weekend nights, and for the life of me I have no idea why.

Kate's serves jumbo portions of solid bar food, which I really like. Everything tastes fresh (or as fresh as can be expected from a bar in a college town). I had some kind of wrap with chicken, which was good. The service was surprisingly prompt. As you've probably guessed, the decor is college town bar/pub and it can get pretty loud in here. If you come here with kids/looking for a fairly quiet dinner, come early. This place turns into an absolute zoo at around 9pm. During our dinner, some dude fell down the stairs and landed on his face. The EMT's had to come and scrape him off the floor. College, man. I'll be back next time I'm in town.

This place is more than just a place for a drink or two, it can get louder in the second floor and when the university is on its more than just loud. Honestly I've not tasted their menu much so don't have an opinion on that.

This is a second visit for me. I mainly went back to have wings, which this time they didn't seem to be as big or tasty as my visit long ago. Service wasn't that great either! My wife had ribs and fries. We had to request new fries because they were cold. I'm pretty sure the fries had sat for a while before making it to our table. If we are ever back in Newark and want to eat this won't be on the list again.

Had a company happy hour outing here. There is a decent top floor which we reserved for about 30-40 of us. Great spot for a private party. Great open space with space for seating. There is also a small stage for a band or a performance. Typical bar food: burgers, nachos, cold meat plates and cheese - edible because I was hungry. Typically beer selection on tap - guinees, blue moon, Sierra Nevada, etc. No real surprise or wow factor in the food and drinks but a great venue.

I keep trying to like this place, and it just keeps letting me down. The most recent venture was for brunch on a Sunday. We got the tuna bites (or something like that) for an appetizer, which were okay but not worth the price. I ordered the fish tacos and my girlfriend ordered a steak salad. Fish tacos weren't bad but they weren't too good either. Nothing to write home about...definitely had better. The problem was the rice and refried beans that came with it. The beans were so dry, paste-like, and looked like they were right out of a can. The rice was dry and generic looking. Terrible...eating the beans was like eating a brown clump of sand. The steak on the salad was a disgrace. Chewy, dry, grilled to oblivion, and just not good looking steak. They also forgot the black beans on the salad. The service there was poor too. The waiter was confused and wouldn't refill my water. My girlfriend and I decided to never eat here again. Other food ventures: I've had the breakfast burrito...not good. It also comes with the beans...terrible. I've had a burger....soggy, but I ate it and took a quick shower when I got home. The only good food items I've had are the boneless wings and the nachos, but I rarely order these items or order them only if there is a large group. Bar scene: Don't even think about it. A mess...and the line is around the corner. It is just sweaty, tight, loud and filled with frat bros. Go somewhere else.

Went last Monday with my daughter and her best friend for lunch. They have a special of half prices salads and sandwiches on Mondays. We chose to sit outside since the weather was great and sunny. I had salad and so did Kelly. The salads were fresh and yummy. Kirsten had a club sandwich with a salad as her side. All three of us liked our meals and didnt have drinks. The total was $21 and we tipped $9 since she worked hard and was good and real price would have been $42. So we tipped on original amount. We had a good lunch and will come back. They have daily specials 11a-4p during the week so I will be back for lunch then,

Sooooo good. Can never go wrong with half price entrees on Sunday and drinks are dirt cheap.... Can never get that in SoCal...

Kate's caters to the needs of he college crowd, so don't expect anything extravagant on the menu. The place has a nice outdoor seating area and plenty of room inside for those hot or rainy days. Food quality is a bit inconsistent and the beer selection is run-of-the-mill. Service can be slow. This is a good place for a lunch, as long as you are in no rush.

If you're OK with droves of undergrads, and you're in the mood for some great drink specials and pretty decent bar food, come here! The half-price entrees during the month of January were a steal...and my chicken enchiladas were no disappointment.

I keep coming back here hoping that it will get better but this place always seems to disappoint. The food here is terrible. The French onion soup was way to salty and the ahi tuna salad was foul. The tuna was not fresh at all. Wouldn't recommend this place.
Great for lunch and to eat outside. I love the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

Klondike Kate's is a classic local pub type restaurant with a bar. The food is generally typical of a pub. I got a Hawaiian burger with fries. The fries were a little bit cool but the hamburger was very hot and tasted good. For desert, I got chocolate cake with mousse filling and butter cream chocolate frosting, which was surprisingly good for a pub. The atmosphere is kind of local family oriented with a range of customers both young and old. Parking is free in one of the nearby lots if you get your parking ticket validated. I gave the restaurant a rating of a solid 3. As pub food goes, it was very good, but on the scale of all restaurants, it could be better. I got what I paid for, and since my burger was one of the specials, it was half price.

**BANQUET REVIEW ONLY** My fiance and I had our engagement party in the Rockwell Room upstairs on Sunday, 7/28/13. I had never been in that room before and it was smaller than I had hoped. We did a buffet style dinner and the fact that we had 25 people in the room didn't help but that's nobody's fault. The banquet manager, Lizette, was very helpful throughout the initial process. She was basically cool with whatever decorations we wanted to use. We also hooked up our Wii after dinner to occupy 3 of the kids there. We were able to hook up our iPod to play our own music. Our server for the night was the best..he was professional, courteous and really cool. The food wasn't anything to write home about but it was good. We offered our guests a limited bar and one of the drinks we offered was the Orange Crush. They were amazing and a big hit! I would recommend this place for maybe a smaller party or a sit-down style dinner instead of a buffet.

Nice bar, great nachos, but no flaming shots. Kind of a bummer when you are out and looking to celebrate the good old days with some flaming Dr. Peppers. Atmosphere is always good and the food is on par also.

Close but not quite there. The Mediterranean pasta sauce was very flavorful BUT the pasta itself was overcooked (soft). The staff is accommodating - allowing someone to exchange mash potatoes for another veggie side- but the steak came out medium instead of medium rare. Was it an off night or is the norm??

Nice little college town bar. We stopped in for a few apps and drinks. While waiting for our beer I noticed that on the bar top they have beer glasses that are filled with complimentary Chex Mix style snacks. I was surprised how many people didn't think twice about placing their hands into these glasses to grab these snacks....... not very sanitary, they should have some sort of spoon/scoop. (many bars in certain states no longer allow this). ....... To each his own..... Anyway, we had a few Samuel Adams Summer Ales. We had the seared/blackened Ahi Tuna Bites with wasabi ranch dressing. We also had the Mediterranean chic pea hummus and grilled artichoke/tomato bruschetta with toasted panini pita plate. Both apps were good. The bartender was cool. The prices were reasonable. We would return if in the area again.

I came here when I was visiting the UD campus because so many students I spoke with recommended it. However when I got there the waiter screwed up my order and left onions on my sandwich, which I am highly allergic to. When I brought this to his attention he acted as if it was my fault even though he wasn't paying attention. They also still charged me for the sandwich I couldn't eat and that made me sick. It was probably the worst service I've ever received at a restaurant.

Oh Kates, how I love you!!! You made nacho night my favorite ritual... You made my 21st birthday a success... And you made my lazy spring afternoons filled with sun, good drinks, and good people on your patio. I'm sadly knocking off one star because the last few times I went back to visit UD, you didn't have those soft chocolatey mints at the front door. Those mints deserve a star of their own. Otherwise, one of my fav spots in Newark, and probably one of the only good bars left out there!

I always take someone here if they are visiting. It's a good spot for a quick drink or a good family dinner. I do find a long wait on weekends, and end up heading to iron hill across the street instead. I love when they have a dj upstairs on weekends.

Two weeks ago I stopped in for dinner during their 1/2 price Entries (promo) they were running for month of January. Ordered Ribeye and enjoyed it. Thought the portion was enough and it was flavorful. Especially enjoyed it because it was half price. Wife had the Ahi Tuna and enjoyed it also. Only grip about the place was that it was really old looking (but guess that was OK as it added to the feel of the place). Also, didn't feel like that had much of a kids menu for my son. Other then that, if they ran 1/2 entrees all year, I'd be there more often.

I think my drunk brain was tricked by this place back in my college days. This place used to be the spot. Lines out the door, everyone you wanted to see, a place to be somebody! Eeeegghhh...I went here last weekend after going to a game with a bunch of alums. It smelled like a vomeerswurine (vomit, beer, sweat, and urine) bomb went off. Yikes. It was crowded and hot. I seriously thought I was going to go into a stench/heat coma. My working woman adult brain was not happy. This bar is fun if you've already taken 3 shots of SoCo and 6 beers before heading out the door, because then you can just contribute to that stink bomb and feel like one of the party!

As a place to eat, Kate's is pretty good if you can eat outside. Inside is dark and always seemed kind of dirty. As a bar, this place is as over-rated as any I've ever been. The lack of competition and early last call allow Kate's to have enourmous lines, impersonal bartenders, and the bouncers are huge assholes (read: losers who have no friends so try to get into fights with drunk nerdy students at the bar to impress other bouncers). Oh, and if you do get inside, the crowd around the bar is brutal, as is moving from room to room. Is 80s night an event if it's every night?? Couldn't they have built apartments here instead of at the Balloon? They salvage 2 stars for $2 22oz bud/bud light bottles and the decent scenery (skirts) outside when the weather's nice.

Kate's is a Newark institution, lasting through the years. I have to say I was much more enamored with the place when I was in school than I am now. The menu is pretty diverse - salads, sandwiches, apps, and entrees. Full bar, beer selection, and Happy Hour during the week (mainly on domestics). The buffalo chicken sandwich is pretty good. The sweet potato fries are mediocre. The grilled chicken sandwich needed some livening (thus why you add the buffalo hot sauce to it). Service is on par with what you would expect in a college town. Takes a while to get refills, hostess and servers don't really seem to care. Go for Happy Hour. Sit outside and drink your beer overlooking Main Street. That is totally worth the view.

Stopped here for lunch today, we were in town to buy a new car. The decor is great inside and it seemed like a great hometown bar. Hubby and I split the coconut shrimp app which was just ok, i think they need to clean out their fryer or something. I had a turkey club with tater tots... Mmm tots! My husband had some sandwich with meatloaf and other meats, it was pretty good but alittle greasy for me. I also had a bloodymary which was obviously made with v8(blehhh) but i asked for extra olives and that made up for it! All in all we would probably come back ( but not during college days or at night, it seems like it could turn into "that college bar")

I've been to this restaurant twice, and Ohhhh Emmmmm Gheeeee!!!! Apparently I made "O" faces and noises with each bite of Mom's Meatloaf... I couldn't get enough of it. The meat was juicy and tasty, the taters..... oh the taters... and I don't like cooked carrots, but yeah, I'm a fan now! The restaurant is fun, the waiters were very nice. The price was just right. I'll go back every time I'm in DE!

Always a great time at Kate's. Good location with cheap beer and plenty of scenery... It used to be better when they had the 22 oz Bud Light bottles for $3 and Tom Travers for 80's night on Saturdays, but nothing lasts forever. Also, drink from the pitcher... I've never eaten here, but their food is probably comparable to Kid Shelleen's which is its sister bar. Meaning it's probably good. LOL

Best nachos (order with chicken) I have ever had. Great prime rib, loaded bake potatoes, and ahi tuna. Make sure you tell your waitress to hold entre until you are done with your appetizer since they do like to turn over seats quickly. My wife loves the marqueritas. Been there literally a hundred times.

Cool old pub feeling extensive menu with more diversity than you might normally find I a college town pub. It was recommended by our tour guide at U of Del who said it's a fun place to hang out. You can definitely feel comfortable here and share laughs and a few pints with friends. If you are a spicy burger fan try the Cowboy Burger. Really good beef cooked just right topped with homemade chili and jalpapeno's. My daughter hadlettuce wraps and the wasabi sauce it came with was awesome. all in all pretty good pub grub in a college town.

Hadn't eaten here for a while just because had a couple bad meals over 10 years ago. Always did enjoy the nachos. I met some friends for happy hour. 2.00 beers and live music. We moved to a table to eat. 2 of us had the blackened ahi tuna sandwich. I never expect much. This was fantastic. Ordered rare and it was cooked perfectly. Also had roasted red peppers on it and mushrooms. You can chose from many sides. I had the waffle fries. they where good too. Another had the nachos. a half plate is huge but they went down hill a little. think chips and not much cheese. and no sour cream? and also at our table was s turkey wrap. It looked good. it was fresh turkey. that is always a win! Waitress was really nice but seemed very busy and a little rushed. Sat upstairs in a room i never knew existed and it was freezing! Kate's has redeemed itself from my bad meals years ago. Let's hope it's just as good next time.

Returned to U of D with my 13 year old daughter for Sunday brunch at Kate's. Hadn't been on campus since graduating in 1988!! Main st. is a bit different--missing the Stone Balloon... My Chesapeake benedict was rich, filling and quite yummy. Rebecca had a chicken caesar wrap that she enjoyed. The bloody mary was also good and quite strong. It might be another 20 odd years unless she decides to attend!!

The food is pretty worthless, there are much better places to eat on Main Street. The real pull for this place is the dreaded 80s Night. If a bar is holding itself up with that crutch its time to put it out of its misery. The bouncers are meat-heads and looking to pile on in the event of any misbehaving. I've seen scrawny guys get "escorted out" by 5 bouncers - too much testosterone methinks. Only good in moderation.

This "saloon"-style restaurant seems to be always full of people. I don't really know why. The food prices are standard, and the dishes are HUGE. But that's no use if the food does not taste good. The drinks are pretty good and decently priced. And, everyone who works here seems to have stepped right out of Abercrombie & Fitch ad. Ahhh...that must be why this place is always hoppin'. Definitely a college-joint.

Kate's has good food and drink specials most nights. And their food is good for a bar. However at night it tends to get very crowded to the point where it is not much fun.
(3)Lauren G.
(5)Tim H.
It's your typical college hangout. I graduated a couple of years ago and Kate's is always on the agenda whenever I come back to visit. Their nachos are really really good. The only downside to this place is the doucebag bouncers, who really let the minimal amount of power go to their heads.
(4)Alex Z.
(3)Christopher M.
(3)Heather L.

(2)Peter D.
(5)Musin Y.
Loud, dark and dirty - perfect for undergrads or poor grad students. The sandwiches are pretty uninspiring and the nachos are generally swimming in a warm pool of oil.
(2)Haiyue Z.
Overall a good experience. However, the Buffalo boneless wings tastes very salty and sour, I had one bite and I stopped eating the wings. Servers are very good-looking and welcoming.
(4)Julie N.

(5)Amy G.

(5)Jason k.
I do not know what happened to this place but in the last 6 months there has been a steady decline in food quality and service. On half price sandwich day there quality has gone down, now its more bread and less filling..service just sucks!
(1)Ryan S.
Kate's food is some of the best no main street! All of the staff is quick and friendly, and quick to refill drinks before they're empty (one of my pet peeves). Also, there's no deal like their half priced entrees on Sundays! Bar scene is alive and popping after 9pm too!
(5)Al G.

(4)R D.

College bar with decent food. The nachos were great, but what nachos aren't? The special were great. 1/2 off salads/sandwiches!

(4)Brooke W.
(3)Joel H.

(3)Mark A.
(4)Alaina B.
Maybe.

Great atmosphere and colorful

(5)James M.
The waitress was exceptionally friendly and knew the menu every well. Good Irish pub type atmosphere when we went for lunch. Family friendly environment , but I would go there without the fam to have a drink as well.
(4)Stephan C.
This is a fun place for cocktails and a good meal. I love sitting outside on a nice day. I've never been disappointed. Looks like a little college town influence which makes this an even better place. I had fun here. I'm sure you will too.

Joey
(1)Bianka F.
We came here to have drinks and to go dancing, it's your typical pub and a pretty big dance floor. It was hard to get the bartenders attention and we had to remind the bartender a few times about our drinks but it was an overall good experience
(4)R H.
Sunday night 1/2 price entrees - great deal, great food and great local place. Chicken chesapeake is fantastic.
(4)Morgan G.
(3)Andrew H.
(4)Matt Z.
(3)Adam K.
(3)Angela D.
(5)Nick P.
Dirty and run-down on the inside. Burger was undercooked, mushy, and rather bland tasting. Only good thing about the place is the sweet potato fries. The UD grad students I was having lunch with say it gets insanely crowded on weekend nights, and for the life of me I have no idea why.
(2)John F.
(3)Akash Y.
This place is more than just a place for a drink or two, it can get louder in the second floor and when the university is on its more than just loud. Honestly I've not tasted their menu much so don't have an opinion on that.
(4)Guinevere N.
Good place for a bite; not disappointing or inspiring.
(4)Jesse A.
(2)Hong L.
(3)Brooks E.
(1)Barbara L.
They have daily specials 11a-4p during the week so I will be back for lunch then,
(4)Paulyne C.
Sooooo good. Can never go wrong with half price entrees on Sunday and drinks are dirt cheap.... Can never get that in SoCal...
(5)Igor O.
(3)Lauren H.
If you're OK with droves of undergrads, and you're in the mood for some great drink specials and pretty decent bar food, come here! The half-price entrees during the month of January were a steal...and my chicken enchiladas were no disappointment.
(3)Angela S.
I keep coming back here hoping that it will get better but this place always seems to disappoint. The food here is terrible. The French onion soup was way to salty and the ahi tuna salad was foul. The tuna was not fresh at all. Wouldn't recommend this place.
(1)Aaliyah P.
Alright -Already so I haven't actually eaten a meal at Kates since I lived in Newark I will refrain from giving away my age ,but its been a few years ... St pattys day is probably not the best day to venture down onto main st but I had a few promotions set up and MONEY TALKS. My meal led me to believe that this is still true NACHOS and BEER will be the only thing I ever order from here. In between events the boss lady treated us to lunch I probably should have just walked down the st to go to peace of pizza but my green hair and st pattys day get up wouldn't allow me to do it on my own. I ordered the Blackened Tuna Sandwich I chose no tomatoes or mushrooms (since I despise them both) and to have the wasabi mayo on the side. Had a ceaser salad added since french fries wont do much for my girlish figure. The sandwich wasn't that bad ,but it wasn't the greatest thing either. Im really happy my tuna was cooked medium as I had requested. I think if I had of stuck with the potato roll instead of the wrap it would have been more satisfying I almost never eat a whole sandwich but my hunger overwhelmed me and the size of the sandwich just didn't measure up. As I did when I was 21 ill stick with the nachos and beer (and maybe a shot or two?) They do offer a pretty good lunch deal coup or salad with sandwich or burger or entrée size salad for 10.00 (M-F 11am -4pm)
(3)Kevin M.
Great for lunch and to eat outside. I love the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.
(3)Rusty B.

(4)Cristin N.
I love Kate's!!!!! Best nachos around and it's always a good time if you are looking to dance and drink.
(5)Henry S.
Nice bar, great nachos, but no flaming shots. Kind of a bummer when you are out and looking to celebrate the good old days with some flaming Dr. Peppers. Atmosphere is always good and the food is on par also.
(4)J G.
(3)Ken M.

Great wings on Thursday 1/2 price, fun place and outstanding bar staff. The meateater's mizza is outstanding and a bargain for a midscale restaurant.

Main st. Burger is the way to go. Fun place to sit on the porch and see friends walk by. Nice ambiance on first floor but second floor is kinda bla.h. Gets real crowded depending on the day.

Half price wings on Thursday with $5 Yeung pitchers. Half price burgers on Monday. And the second best bar in Newark? Yep, I am a fan.

Great environment and nice outdoor seating. Sizable portions of average food...recommend for lunch but plenty of better options for dinner.
