Super delicious is the word for the food at Ali Baba. You will fall in love with their food. As I write I am drooling for their food, I wish it was located right next to my house so that I can go there anytime I like :) I love their comfy lounge dining area. Their service is fast and courteous. Overall, its a place once must try.

Hookah bar and restaurant. Arrived at 11:35 (the sign posted in front door says it opens at 11) but front door was locked. I came in through the rear entrance. A young man informed me that the food would be a while because the cooks had just arrived for the day. The Moroccan eggplant salad was delightful! The chicken wraps were yummy, too.

The best falafel wrap I've had since I left Toronto a few years ago. Seriously. I want to make a special trip to Newark from Philly just to have another. Next time I'll try their shawarma. If it's anything like the falafel, it's going to make my mouth explode. I only sat inside to wait for my take-out order, but the ambiance was nice and the staff very friendly. They offer hookas and tobacco blends; while I'm not into it, my sister would probably love this place. I didn't notice any smoke in the air and it didn't seem stuffy or stifling. I quit smoking cigarettes a couple years ago so I'm a little sensitive to secondhand smoke, but I didn't notice any in the restaurant, which means they probably have adequate ventilation to support having the hooka option. I think I'll bring a few friends here to actually sit down for a meal; just from my brief time waiting and sipping on a Lebanese Coffee, I think we'll have a great meal.

The food is really good - I always get the beef kabobs or the spicy chicken. I love the tabouli and the cucumber and carrot salad is good also. One time my kabobs were completely raw in the center but I'm not going to hold that against them. Their food is really garlicky so when I eat here I make sure not to go out afterwards. The prices are not bad because the food is good and the portions are big. I'm taking away a star because I think the hookah is extremely overpriced. But they can get away with that because it's the only hookah place on Mainstreet and the under 21 kids love hanging out there.

The food is always delicious, never let down by the food. The atmosphere inside is awesome and comfortable very middle eastern. The service is good just a little slow. Great place for a casual dinner date. Some mint tea, backlava, and a hookah sesh is a perfect way to end a nice dinner at Ali baba. Fairly inexpensive as well. Would recommend to anyone.

Great food, very plesant atmosphere, and great service. These folks treat you like family, so stop by ASAP and have a great middle eastern expierence here in the USA.

My favorite place!!! Love it! If you aren't familiar with Middle Eastern foods don't think you are heading here for Indian. I always have people ask me if its Indian food and I explain its not. I love the falafel, the eggplant salad (more like a stew than a salad) ( hard to explain but it's delicious) and the Lebanese salad with pita and feta cheese. So much good stuff here and I recommend getting several things for sharing with your group. Be prepared to sit low on either stools or couch like seating with low tables. Very relaxed feel and friendly service.

Food is always top notch at good prices. Anything with lamb and rice is my go-to pick! However, service usually ends up being so-so, especially if the hookah tables are crowded. You end up getting forgotten at times, at least if you're inside. I'll still come back for the food though.

There is nothing middle eastern about this place! They tell you what you want to hear to make a buck. They should just call it what it is.. An Israeli owned restaurant.. They told us Arabs love going there and love their food.. LIES! Not one decent Arab/ human being would go there to support such a mediocre place or staff. The drinks are made in "Israel". The menus say Israeli cuisine ( when it's clearly Palestinian dishes) the hookahs have Hebrew on them! It was an insult being there to every Arab, and what tipped it all off the fact that they denied it and kept lying. The only reason they're still in business is because they're the only hookah place around the area but trust me. Take the drive somewhere else and save your dignity it'll be worth it.

This is the worst hookah lounge I have ever been to. Seating is awful, services is awful, coal is old, and not middle eastern they are jewish

I went back to this place and I was slightly disappointed... thus I am dropping the rating to 3.75. Below are my reasons for deducting stars: 1. Slow service: we had to wait about 25 minutes for our food to come out. We were starving and when I asked our waiter about our appetizer, he just said "Oh, I didn't see it..." and went back into the kitchen. We ordered chicken shawarma and lamb kabab for our entrees and moroccan eggplant salad for our appetizer , so it seems that the service was way too slow for our food. 2. Taste of food: I loved their moroccan eggplant salad, but it was slightly salty today. I am assuming that it is precooked because this dish has that long simmered texture and taste. Moroccan eggplant salad is mashed eggplant simmered in olive oil and special herbs. The sauce almost tastes like something mixed with pepper and tomato, and the texture is extremely soft like pureed baby food. It is called "salad", but it is more like a dip. I really love this dish, and I wonder if it was salty because it was over heated for too long. Still, for $7, I can't complain too much. My biggest disappointment was their lamb shisi kabab. I remembered the meat being very tender, but it was really tough this time. Seasoning was perfect, and loved that oily herb taste on grilled peppers and onions, but the meat itself was dissatisfying. Despite my reduced ratings, I still do like this place. The prices have not changed much at all compared to last 10 years. Their desserts were selling at $1.50 (Baklava)... wa? Are we still in 2014? For college students, I think it is still a wonderful place to go to for a unique ethnic dining experience. For me, maybe I just got older and my palate has upgraded.

My husband and I absolutely love this place. I love the spicy braised chicken, the salmon in yogurt sauce, and the crisp, heart-shaped falafel. I love the pickled carrot salad, the pickled cucumber salad, and the stewed eggplant salad that drips with savory olive oil. The ambiance is fantastic. The place is colorful and comfortable with what I assume are Moroccan furnishings. You can choose to sit in more traditional style on low, padded benches in front of large brass tables, or you can sit in the booths near the front windows. They seem to do a brisk business in hookah service as well, setting smokers outside on the tented patio.

The atmosphere inside Ali Baba makes you forget you are on Main Street in Newark, Delaware. The Lentil.Soup was delicious, and we were given a full-sized serving (not a small cup as some restaurants offer). The Lamb Kabobs, Moroccan Chicken, and side dishes were wonderful and plentiful. The service was excellent. The entire staff was cheerful and polite, and made us feel as if we were at home. The evening was a pleasant experience, and we will definitely return.

Food: Outstanding. Never a problem and they have great variety. The shrimp and chicken kabobs are nicely seasoned and tender and come with a huge portion of perfectly cooked and seasoned rice as well as their pita bread. I am extremely obsessed with their garlic sauce and would order a vat of it to go if I could! Atmosphere: The atmosphere is nice for a date night or a casual lunch or dinner. There are plush couches when dining in, as well as regular tables. I have also done hookah here in the past and have always had a good experience. Service: Service is sometimes a bit slow.

Food is great every time I go. I almost always get the lamb kebab for my entree because it's so tasty. I also recommend the bastilla and the cheese samosa. I always receive friendly and welcoming service. The interior is well decorated, with lots of color and a cozy atmosphere. It's also very nice to relax and smoke hookah after a very filling dinner. One of my favorite places on Main st.

For Middle Eastern grub for American palettes, I think this place is spot on. The ambiance and interior feel a bit worn, but service was quick and amiable. I had the kofta kebab, which was chargrilled perfectly, and nicely seasoned with balanced flavors. The rice was fluffy, as another reviewer pointed out, and pretty good. Overall, this was a solid meal. Would go back.

Splendid experience from start to finish!! I ate the Morrocan chicken, spicy- texture perfect , spicing hot but flavorful - just a sublime experience . Casual, cool decor, fun low tables to sit at. Family friendly, too. I wish we lived closer!!

Yum! I love Ali Baba. Now that I have tried out more of the menu, I feel like I can write a review. I'll try and keep this short and sweet. The decor is lovely, and you'll feel as though you're in the Middle East. The staff are super friendly, although they're very relaxed. When I mean relaxed, I mean you may be waiting awhile for just about everything. Some of the dishes can be spicy, so for some people, it may be an issue waiting for more drinks. However, once you get your food, the wait will be well worth it. The portions are very generous and the food is high quality. My favorite dish has to be the Moroccan chicken. It comes with either rice or a salad, as well as pita. This chicken is absolutely delicious! The meat falls off the bone and is so good. I also really like their Moroccan carrot salad as an appetizer if I don't get the Moroccan chicken entree. Their chicken kabobs are also really good. It comes with two skewers and a huge portion of rice. Their hummus is also really good. As for the hookah, I've only experienced it once. It wasn't really my thing, but it was still fun and it appears to be an extremely popular thing to do in Newark. The smells from the hookahs are delicious! Overall, one of my favorites!

The culture is spectacular. I died and went to hookah heaven here. Although watch out because if you just get a hookah, they will pressure you into buying food. The waitstaff is nice and deserve big hugs.

Came here for dinner with a friend Afterwork last night. We had the Morrocon chicken and lamb kebabs, the food was good and tasty. Both meats were very tender and the green salad was very good. They serve you pita bread, which surprisingly tastes like the ones from a local supermarket. However, both of us had to go to the bathroom after the meal, so that ruined the entire experience. The worse is the next day we were still not feeling 100%. Good food but not clean.

This is a pretty cool spot to get some Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food. The interior of the place is done very nicely, with tapestries on the wall and cushioned wall-to-wall seating one might imagine they would find in the Middle East. The food selection is good for vegetarians or meat lovers, with anything from Mujaddara and Hummus to Kebabs. The service is pretty good. They can be somewhat slow at times, but typically I don't have much of an issue. On a side note, if you like hookah, this is the spot to be at on Main Street. Definitely a place I continue to return to on occasion.

So impressed! We came in for the outdoor hookah bar, but when the server told us it was a 30 minute wait for a seat at the outdoor hookah bar we decided to sit inside and have a snack. We got the humus and the lamb kabob. Both were delicious, but the lamb was seriously one of the most delicious things I have ever had. It was so tender you could cut it with a fork. We had the Lebanese wine and it was delicious and inexpensive. We were finally told the hookah table was available so we went outside and had a great time. They use a grapefruit instead of a ceramic bowl to hold the tobacco which adds a nice flavor. We got the double apple and sat outside for a good hour or two. While outside we got some mint tea and baklava which were both great. Can't wait to come back to Newark so I can try Ali Baba again!
The food is absolutely wonderful. There is nothing like it in the area. Whenever I go, I always get the Bastilla - filo dough stuffed with eggs, chicken, almonds and covered in powdered sugar and cinnamon. The atmosphere is extremely unique and feels like an authentic exotic experience. The wait staff can be hit or miss, but more times than not, they are extremely attentive and helpful. The prices may seem high, but portions are large and extremely conducive to sharing.

I LOVE this place. I have been going for about 10 years, and my husband longer than that. The food is always delicious. Depending on the time of the day you go, and the day you go (If you go Friday/Saturday evenings, expect a longer wait for seating and food), the service and food is fast. Between having 3-4 servers on any given night, I am surprised at how fast they are. The decor is gorgeous as well, and they take really well to kids. We have been taking our now 3 year old daughter since she was born, and she absolutely loves. They have recently expanded, and they also have hookah. I am not sure how much the hookah costs, but it seems popular as every time i pass the restaurant people are outside and the deck is full with a hook on almost every table.

Unique. 2.27.14 As soon as we entered I felt transported to the Middle East. The decorations, music, smells, guests, staff...and oh the food! It reminded me of a college study abroad experience through Jordan and Israel in the early 80's. The small tables made for an intimate squeeze. Hookah bar adds to the novelty. Tabbouleh: Fresh and zesty Parsley, tomato and onions Chicken schwarma ($? - not sure because our out-of-town friend grabbed the check...I'd didn't fight hard for it) (Insider tip, this is not on menu, ask with a smile) Perfectly seasoned chicken, crunchy on outside, tender in middle Hummus: smooth and tasty Sadly, because the service was a bit slow, the Pita bread got stale, but the first half was warm and chewy. The unknown white dipping sauce offered a deliciously powerful garlic punch. Shrimp kabob: ($16) Thoroughly enjoyed the two sticks of grilled plump, moist butterflied shrimp with peppers, onions and cherry tomatoes. We left 'fat & happy'.

this place is very cute. my boyfriend and i ate here last night and we ordered the veg platter, the carrot salad, and the veg rolls. If you order appetizers - the main platter is big enough to share. The falaffel was tasty and crisp, the hommus was very good, i had a Moroccan tea and also really enjoyed the pickled beets that was more of a garnish but hey - why not! They do have a hookah area that seemed very popular - though i was sitting inside and away from all that smoke. i found out about Ali Baba b/c they catered the Delaware Veg Fest. I seriously LOVED the carrot salad they provided and knew i had to go back! it might seem weird but whatever your diet is - vegan or not the carrot salad is a winning dish. i already want to go back and get it again tonight! I'm docking a star b/c in all honestly the pita bread seemed a little stale / cold / not fluffy - it was somewhat sub par. and also the music was too loud, it was distracting. either way i would go back again for sure - i had a great dinner there.

Wow! An awesome experience My husband and I were looking for a healthy late night dinner in an area we were not at all familiar with. We went onto Yelp and found this gem! I'm a vegetarian and hubby's not. He ordered the Moroccan Chicken and just raved about it. I had endless choices and couldn't be happier about that. Everything was so delicious and was delivered to the table quickly by very friendly staff. I think we met the whole family (owners, etc). The check came and I was even happier as we ate so much and even took food home and it didn't break the bank! We will definitely go back the next time we are in the area.

I am sitting here waiting for my food. I don't know where to start. After waiting a bit not knowing what to do, the waiter took me to a table. After 5 minutes he is asking me where are the other two? I said I told you table for one. The place is dirty and I don't know why they got the idea that this is a luxury restaurant. The waiter takes my order and asks if I want to drink a beer. I said only coke and he laughs at me. As you can see I have not got my food yet. So much for a Friday night trying something new. Running a restaurant in not only about the food. No food in sight yet. I asked the waiter after an hour that I want to leave and don't want the food anymore. He asked me if it was my first time and start coming up with all kind of excuses. It took 1 hr and 15 min. for the food to make it to my table. The food was cold and the lamb was like rocks. Yes rocks as in stones. For those of you that likes lamb please take a look at my picture and the lamb here was nothing close to the picture. Sorry my friend. Just to have a good location does not mean you are ok. Try to learn the business.

Without a doubt one of the best dinner's you can get on Main Street in Newark. Don't get me wrong you'll pay over $12 for an entree (most range from $12-15), but the food is really really really good, and the portions are quite large. My roommate and I are big fans of the Lamb Kabobs. They're cooked perfectly, with a nice smokey char on the outside yet still delightfully pink on the inside. They're a great choice for a group with lots of dietary restrictions considering you can satisfy vegans, pescetarians and carnivores in one meal. Also very paleo friendly! (they swapped my hummous and tabouli for baba ganouj and carrot salad with my lamb kabobs)

Longtime favorite of mine--one of the first restaurants I really liked in Delaware and it's very reliable. The good: Traditional Middle Eastern fare such as kebabs, stuffed grape leaves (dolmas), lentil soup, mjeddara (lentils and rice with caramelized onion), hummus, falafel, shwarma, gyros, and salads. I'm a huge fan of the salads, carrot salad, fatoush (pronounced FAT-TUSH, love that, eh?) and tabbouleh are great. There are MANY vegetarian, even VEGAN options; the lentil soup, the dolmas have no meat, the falafel, hummus with pita bread, some of the salads, mjeddara (if you ask to have them leave off the tatziki yogurt side dish.) They have those tooth-achingly sweet pastries beloved of the Middle East--baklava and lady fingers (rolls of phyllo stuffed with nuts and honey.) Not vegan, the recipe includes a lot of clarified butter brushed on the phyllo. They even have Bastilla, the chicken and scrambled egg pastry in phyllo, topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Yes, that sounds WEIRD but you have to try it. The flavors blend and it's one of those "more-ish" (forgive the pun) dishes that make you want to take another and yet another bite. You sit in a Moroccan styled room with the bright but dimly lit decor, couches surrounding the room and the low tables. Mint tea, quite authentic, is served. The Bad: It is not very fast for a seated lunch. The concept of FAST doesn't jibe with this part of the world, where eating out is a party, and meant to be savored. Which is a shame in a way, as I'd eat this every day, every meal if I was close enough and sometimes in the US, speed is of the essence sad to say. But you can call and order ahead for take out or they have some delivery (never tried that, I'm out of their area.) Summary: One of my faves, delish, healthy food, plenty of it and you can take a vegan friend and they will be absolutely satisfied as well. Happy happy.

While I'm not a middle-eastern food expert, Ali Baba is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants. It's kind of a hike from my house but always worth it! The inside is decorated nicely and the waiters are very casual but usually friendly. I've gotten the same thing every time because it's so good: the vegetarian platter, the grape leaves, and the fattoush salad. The portions are big so I can share this with 1-2 other people. The hummus and baba ghanoush are the best I've ever had. The fattoush salad is delicious, and I don't usually like tomatos and cucumbers enough to eat a huge portion of them. Lastly....the grape leaves. Not sure why I just discovered these a few months ago but I could live off of them. Ali Baba is a must if you're in the area!

Fantastic. 10/10 Humus. But everything on the menu rules. Hookah if you dig that, and the staff are super cheery.
Try the lamb kabobs that's all I have to say. After them you will gall in love. Plus this is one of the best places to go for a hookah in Delaware the service is a little slow out side but mind you it is a very chill place to go and hang out. Next time you and your friends just want to kick back and relax I say stop by here kick back and smoke a hookah for a hour and people watch.

My boyfriend and I stop by on a daily basis. What can I say? We love it! Can never go wrong with the Ali Baba Hummus and the Dajaj Mashwy. The chicken is so juicy and just falls off the bone, while the rice is fluffy and flavorful. Yum-O.

The portions here are so generous! I've got a thing for lamb and this place always hits the spot. It's so well seasoned and tender that sometimes I wish I had a second stomach to eat more! I've had so many things from them but the lamb is definitely my favorite. I also like getting their baklava and from time to time smoke some hookah. Try the mango kind, so good :) As many other reviewers have said, they take a while to bring the food to you and even though the staff is super nice they take a while to come around so I had to knock off a star for that.

I've been going to Ali Ba Ba since I was freshmen at UD. Now I'm in my last semester of graduate school, and will be headed back home to NY. Out of all the restaurants on Main St., this will be the restaurant I will truly miss. The ambiance is pretty artistic inside. The seating is similar to what you would find at Middle Eastern restaurants. They usually have some soothing Middle Eastern playing the background. The food is great. The meat is usally tender and has a good mixture of spices. I don't know what they do to the rice, its really good. The hummus is okay, nothing special. However, the Ali Ba Ba hummus is amazing! Ground meat to it, I believe beef, and it makes the hummus extremely delicious! I usually get the lamb, chicken, kofta or shrimp kabobs for dinner and they have never let me down. The entrees may seem expensive for many, but it is worth the money. The portion sizes aren't bad either. If you are on a tight budget, the pita wraps are great as well and are reasonably priced. If you go for lunch or dinner, you have to end the meal with baklava. They have one of the best baklava I've had. I enjoy it so much that I ordered a tray of it for a barbecue last fall, and it was a hit! Another plus is the cost of the beers - they all cost $3. You can get pretty upscale beer for a steal! The only slight negative is that may not seem very friendly. It's just their personality, don't let it turn you off. They are truly very nice people. I have never had any issues with them. I wish I spoke Arabic so I could have more in depth conversations with them. If you are in the Newark area, give this place a try. This is probably the most "ethnic" restaurant on Main St.

A desperate need for chicken kabobs brought us to Ali Baba on a recent Saturday night. There were lots of folks enjoying a hookah outside on their many sidewalk tables. Inside, we were seated in a windowless room with benches along the walls, stools, and low tables. Luckily, it wasn't too crowded, so you didn't feel like everyone was up in your business, but I could see it being that way on a busy night. The hummus appetizer was good, but the pitas seemed a bit stale. I'd hate to think that they were reusing, since we were given a pretty big basket... The chicken kabob that was so-much desired was really great. We'd happily dine here again.

Really crowded and hookah is only done outside. The wait for a table with hookah was about an hour. The service is fine, though. When we were finally seated, it was apparent the servers tended to the college students more, which is understandable since they are regulars and probably more irritable. The food was great. The baklava comes in taster portions.

I LOVE Ali Baba's! I have been coming here for about 6 years now and my favorite dish is the chicken kabobs. They have been perfect every single time - juicy, tender, seasoned deliciously, and the portions are huge! Food: everything I have tried here is excellent. I haven't found a dish that I don't like! I highly recommend getting the Bastilla as an appetizer, the chicken kabobs or dajaj mashwy for the main course, and then a mint tea and homemade baklava for dessert. You get large portions for your money. Service: The service has always been excellent and treats the customers so well. They are always smiling and make sure you have a great experience. I have gotten to know some of the waiters over the years and they are very experienced and super friendly. Ambience: You feel like you walk into another world when you enter Ali Baba's Restaurant. From the lighting, to the decorated walls with tapestry's and artifacts, to the brightly colored couches and tables, you will feel as though you are in Israel or Marocco. In the last few years they added a deck in the front of the restaurant. I love sitting outside and eating dinner or smoking hookah. Speaking of hookah, they have a ton of flavors. Today we tried the mango-peach which was awesome and very smooth. Ali Babba's is, by far, my favorite restaurant and I have been bringing my friends there for several years and they all loved it. Definitely check it out for a unique experience!

Food is great, parking sucks, wait staff is friendly but sometimes short-handed. Remember this is $$. We go here regularly, and the quality is consistent. Any negatives are hidden by the enjoyment ratio: general yumminess divided by $$. Standard fare for us: hummus(5), Moroccan eggplant salad (5), lemon chicken (5), spicy chicken (5), lamb kabobs (4). We always share - its just easiest and yummiest. Don't be scared: grab a piece of pita, rip off some meat/veggie, put it on your own plate. The wait staff is friendly, when you get to know them. But if it is busy, just order a bottle of wine, hummus, and eggplant right off the bat, so you have something to do while you wait. Park over at Burger King or down the street at Newark Shopping Center, because the Evil Papa Johns (they hate their employees) owns the lot behind the building.

There are no other middle eastern restaurants in Newark, but there don't need to be. This one is outstanding. We've been about a dozen times in 7 years and really need to get there more often. The salmon kabobs are a huge portion and very nicely prepared. The hummus, baba ghanoush, and tabbouleh are fantastic. Fattoush Salad (cucumber, tomato, pita croutons, spices, and a light olive oil and vinegar dressing) is refreshing and wonderful. You can't really go wrong with anything here. Carnivores, vegetarians, and vegans can all dine happily with many options. With its dimly lit and loungy dining room, this would be great as a date night to try a spread of several dishes on their big coffee-table height tables.

I love this place! I used to go here all of the time when I lived in Newark for both food and Hookah. I was never a huge fan of Middle Eastern food before I was convinced to eat here one day by some of my friends. My personal favorite is the Kafka Kabobs with the rice but the Mediterranean Chicken is also very good, it has a very nice kick to it. The beer is 3 dollars for any bottle which is also a plus. I don't smoke any other type of tobacco but I love puffing on a hookah before or after dinner or just by itself with maybe a beer or two. It's a great place for groups and the seating inside is set up for this with couch-like seating. It is darker and intimate feeling inside. They also have an excellent outside seating area right on Main Street which is where you smoke the Hookah. I love to just kick back on a nice day.

Lamb wrap and kibbe was wonderful. Here is not a fastfood restaurant. So, you should be patient. Their meats are Halal, which is another good choice for Muslims. I really like Ali Baba...

In the UDel area this place is popular, with good reason. Students and families alike come to this place which will transport you to a middle eastern setting with the low tables and dim lighting. There are rugs on the walls... different.. The food is great though, except for the packaged pita bread served cold. We asked for them to be heated. The falafel on the other hand were fresh, hot and made a great sandwich, the spicy sauce had heat and flavor. Good times!

Just love this place! Decent micro brew selection and they are all $3. That being said, if you like Mediterranean food, you'll like this. I got a vegetarian sampler with hummus, felafel, stuffed grape leaves and a salad garnish. They also give you a never ending supply of pita bread. Would probably go here more often, but my wife works a few blocks from there-- so she likes to spend her free time a little bit farther away from work. Truly a great place. FYI, there is an outdoor tented hookah lounge if you're into that.

I hate summer. That said, I love summer days spent on Ali Baba's outdoor patio. There are greater joys than laughing with your friends and the friendly staff of Ali Baba's while enjoying a cool mint hookah with three dollar craft bottles and patiently awaiting a spread of hommus, carrot and green salad, and eggplant zaalouk, but those pleasures are few.

I love this place. The lamb kabobs and stuffed grape leaves are great. The back room is easy on the eyes and a good date spot. I've never been during peak dinner hour so I can't attest to the service when they are busy. Its been steady when I've sat down but I could see how it gets slow during peak times. The last time I went there I got take out and they gave me rice instead of the tabouli salad with my lamb kabob. The rice wasn't exciting and I wouldn't get it again. I love to finish off the meal with some baklava, even if I'm stuffed, which I usually am. They give you enough food for two meals.

I wanted to like Ali Baba, but I couldn't. In the end, the kitchen and the front office fundamentally failed to execute. Service is the primary issue; there is something important about how to manage a restaurant that these guys don't get. From the initial greeting by the manager, to being seated at a table we didn't want, to the long long wait for drinks, to the long long wait for food, the service distracted from the dining experience. Even so, I was waiting for the food to make it all worthwhile. Not to be. Although it was nice to see pastille on the menu (and it was a competent incarnation, although short on the chicken and the nuts) and the tomato and cucumber salad was tasty, the kitchen has problems too. For one, they use the wrong rice and season it poorly. Getting the rice wrong is a big problem when it comes to Middle eastern food. Even the Moroccan chicken - which was nicely cooked with crispy skin and an interesting lemon sauce - failed to excite. The baba ganoush tasted too much like something else - tahini overload. The pita were fine, but neither hot nor compelling. There was an effort made in the decor of the back dining room. The front room less so and the outside dining area not at all. The men's room reminded me more of...well, let's just say it needed attention. "Ali Baba" can be a word for thief in Arabic. These folks certainly stole an evening from me. If you like this restaurant, you'll be blown away by a people who actually get it right. Try Marhaba in Lambertville NJ or Baba's Kitchen in Baltimore.

My first experience here was for my friend's eighteenth birthday (no, no one used the hookah!), and I loved the food! I am by no means a Middle Eastern cuisine expert, but for Delaware standards, this is some pretty good stuff. I'm a vegetarian, but I have been told that the lamb kabobs are simply delightful. My favorite? The baba ganouj!

This is my favorite restaurant in Newark, DE and my boyfriend and I went all the time while in college. Pros: Hookahs Good sized portions Cozy atmosphere Cons: Can get over crowded Service can be slow Favorites: Bastilla Samke harra Moroccan chicken (spicy)

Finally got to try this place. Me and the fiance have been wanting to eat here but seemed to always come during closing time. Went here for dinner and it is well worth it. For apps we got the spankopitas (must must get), the lentil soup (very good as well). I got a chicken shawarma sandwich and it was pretty good. Not the best that I've had, but certainly not the worst. She got the chicken kabob skewers and she liked them. You get a ton of food for the price. Service was friendly but seemed a little slow. Will definitely come back here though.

Found out about this place through Chowhound. It's walking distance to University of Delaware. It's a hookah bar, decorated with oranges, reds and it's a dimly lit - it screams exotic and sultry. The chicken shwarma is moist chicken heavily spiced in curry powder that is tamed by tahini, and pickled radish and raw onion slices. The lamb sandwiches have heavy chunks of seasoned lamb. The baklava is flaky on top, with pistachios in the middle, and the phyllo dough on the bottom is drenched in a honey that has a raw taste to it. BTW- the menu online is outdated in prices listed.

This restaurant never fails. I've been a customer for 4 years. Everything us delicious. I could live on the carrot salad. The Moroccan chicken is awesome- the kebabs are awesome. The hummus is great. Wait times are reasonable, staff is always friendly ( and usually cute as an added bonus). Parking is not bad- I usually park in one of the lots. The front of the restaurant has a hookah bar- popular with the college students. Walking in the entrance there are some booths, and in the back are low lying tables and cushions to sit on. ( the table is level with your knees which may be difficult for some. The ambiance is charming. Never had a bad dish. It is my default place to take any epicurean out of town guests :)

One of the better restaurants in Delaware. I would recommend the Moroccan Chicken. Just wish the beer selection was better.

I have frequented this place a hundred times be it for a birthday, a date or even a casual night out with friends but it never gets old. The best middle eastern place around town..(compared to Casablanca on N duPont Highway). My dish of choice is the Chicken Kabob (that's what the menu says) which is served on a bed of Middle Eastern rice, or with a side of hommus, tabouli salad, and tahini sauce. Any dish you order comes with a basket of pita bread so by the time i am done with my first skewer of kabobs my tummy can't take in no more. Then its time to move on to the sisha n the hookah outside on the balcony. I wonder why they dont have a lounge area for the hookahs...would be more comfortable and relaxing while taking a drag than being seated on a hard wooden chair....point to note Ali Baba!! Only gripe is the service can be purrrrty slow and I mean you sit there running out of things to talk about, drumming the table and my Chicken Kabob is no where in sight....pardon me I exaggerate but that's how long it feels like. But all in all if you are looking for something fresh, healthy and different this is the place to go to!!

Their food is delicious and cheap! And if you like hookah, they have a hookah bar in the front patio area where you can also order drinks. Having been to a handful of Mediterranean restaurants and hookah bars, this one is top notch on both counts. And because the smoking is outside, it won't bother you while you're eating. Well played Ali Baba.

The food here was great, as was the atmosphere in the back. I loved being able to sit on the couches and eat at low tables. My one specific complaint was the birthday music. It was a foreign language section, an english section and an instrumental section. This repeated 5 or 6 times, lasting about 6 min. The entire thing was played at a volume 2 or 3 times the normal level. Again, otherwise, everything was great but this was just ridiculous.

All my friends told me this place was amazing, so one day I went for dinner with them and I was not too impressed. There is an amazing kabob place near my home in Maryland (Maiwand Kabob), and Ali Baba just doesn't compare to them. I got the shish kabob, and it was cooked well but I didn't like the rice. It also took about an hour for our food to be delivered and the waiter was not attentive at all.

Excellent place to go and enjoy some authentic middle eastern food. If you like ambiance this is also a great place! Tables and pillows make you feel like you are in Aladdin. The food is amazing! The waitstaff excellent! We had a great lunch! I well def. return!!!

I must remove a star from my original rating of 4 because I came back here and tried some of their other dishes (bean soup, shrimp kabob, Morocan chicken) and found them all to be subpar. They were all pretty bland dishes. The Morocan chicken was bathed in some oils spice sauce blend and it was heavy on the taste of cumin. The chicken itself had no flavor whatsoever and the sauce did not make up for it. Shrimps were big but tasteless and rubbery. Bean soup was way over priced. $2 for a small bowl of boiled beans and lentils! Overall this restaurant has some great lamb dishes and some good chicken dishes, but everything else I've tried was bad. This place is a hit or miss.

Food 4* Service 3* Ambiance 4* The food was pretty good for a restaurant in Newark. I live in CC Philly; so not sure what I wud compare this against. But the Moroccan chkn I had was really good. Rest of the stuff we ordered was avg/ above avg. The service was pretty bad. We didn't have menus for abt 10 mins after we sat down. No one came in for our orders either until we flagged some1 down. The ambiance was kinda relaxed and conducive to long conversations. All in all, pretty good option of u live in the area!

Six reviews in, I suppose it's time I award my first five stars to a truly deserving restaurant. I visited Ali Baba's on Main Street, Newark, about a year ago for lunch. I was impressed then and I am again impressed with this Moroccan/Lebanese/Israeli combo of flavor. I am a big fan of the clean, fresh, not-too-heavy flavor this cuisine offers. It's tough finding friends who want to try something outside of the box (the box being your standard and crappy dime-a-dozen chains like Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday's). A friend with whom I'd been out of touch for some time suggested we meet up for some delectables at Ali Baba's tonight; I didn't argue! I arrived a little early and was seated and served a beverage right away. My friend soon followed and she was served just as quickly. We decided on some appetizers, salads, and would share a main. We started with the baba ghannouj, an Arabian dish of mashed eggplant with a variety of seasonings. It had an amazingly smoky and piquant flavor, no doubt imparted by the roasting the eggplant went through. Combined with a good amount of tahini (to give it a gorgeous creamy texture) and lemon juice (to cut through the heaviness of the tahini and eggplant), the only other thing to make this dish jump over the top was the generous drizzle of olive oil on top. The pita served with the baba ghannouj could have been a little warmer, but I'm niggling here. We also ordered the falafel. Now, I've had better falafel, but it generally comes from a city with a population above 1,000,000! For Newark, this falafel was fine. A good, solid crunch on the outside gave way to a tender, savory mix of herbs and chickpeas on the inside. I paired it with some of the carrot and cucumber salad provided along with our main course. With a little yogurt sauce and served on a pita, this was a perfect bite of food. For our main, we ordered the Moroccan chicken in the lemon and olives style. It would be a challenge to write something critical about this dish because the half-chicken we were served was perfect. Even the white meat (as often as it is overcooked) was beautifully tender and required nothing more than a fork to free it from the bone. We also ordered the warm Moroccan eggplant salad, an eggplant-y, tomato-y, garlicky amalgamation of flavor. A flavor, explosion, if you will...the meatiness of the eggplant standing up well to the earthiness of the herbs and spices so inherent in Moroccan cuisine. My friend and I really had an excellent meal. I need to get to Newark more and forget about my severe distaste for its population of obnoxious college kids. If only for restaurants like Ali Baba's, it certainly would make that decision much easier.

Good food, ambience for a great price. To begin with I was very excited with the ambience of the restaurant. The outside could be very deceiving given whats inside. It has booth like seating outside and inside has more of lounge like seating area. The place was quite crowded given a Sunday evening. The food is moderately priced, every entrees range around 12$ but the portions were huge. We ordered thinking that the portions would be moderate given the ambience but we when the food arrived realized that we could have ordered one or two less appetizers. We ordered the hummus and bastilla for appetizers and I have never had such soft pita breads ever. This is definitely a place I would take friends/family who are visiting if you want to enjoy some good food at a good place.

I went to UD and starting going to Ali Baba when I was there. The food is so fresh and delicious - particularly the Moroccan Green Salad, Moroccan Chicken, hummus and the wraps (during lunch). The decor is really cozy and fun, and they have hookhas now too. Mango juice is also very yummy. As far as Newark goes, this is something different and fun, especially for a group dinner.

I was excited by the atmosphere walking into Ali Baba- they asked us if we wanted a booth or table. We responded table and were ushered into a very comfortable lounge area- clearly where you used to be able to smoke hookah and lounge about. Opening the menu was, well, disappointing. You see, we had arrived for dinner excepting that dinner in a college town would have reasonably priced options, but despite plenty of cheap "LUNCH AND CARRYOUT ONLY" options, we were stuck with the mostly $12 and up dinner plates. I opted for the beef kabob, and was treated to two large sticks of meat and a massive pile of rice. I found the seasoning on the rice and meat to be unimpressive and bland- but thankfully the yogurt sauce helped me to accentuate my meal. I felt like most of my meal was derived from the basket of seemingly bottomless pita bread. As one of my dining companions just noted out loud, "Maybe we just got the wrong thing". She, like a previous reviewer, got the baba ghanoush- but missed out on her opportunity to be reminded of Seinfeld.

Ali Baba is one of my favorite eateries of all time! I bring all my friends and family here (who now bring their friends and family...) and even the less adventerous find someting good. The bastilla (egg and chicken in a pastry with powdered sugar) sounds weird but is SO GOOD! don't bother with the hummus or ground meat dishes-- get the salmon hake (divine in a tahini type sauce with onions and peppers) or the roast chicken with either of the spices. THe carrot side salad is really good too. The wait staff are always so warm and friendly here. Just wish they were open Saturdays for lunch. The hookah bar outside is annoying if you just want to eat, but it's worth it. I prefer to eat at a table so usually sit up front. I like it better than their other restaurant, Casablanca (food is great there too but I don't like eating with my hands and it's too dark , theatrical and hard to get to for me) Wish I had some of that salmon right now....

Great chicken kebabs as long as you don't mind sitting amongst college kids who are too cool for school and occasionally their not so cool parents. Great service, great food and try the nectar fruit drinks!

It has been 6 years since I last ate at this wonderful restaurant, and I decided it was high time that I return. My mother had been asking to come back here for quite awhile, so we drove an hour and 15 minutes from PA to have dinner this evening. We arrived at 5pm, and were quickly seated in the booth area in the front of the restaurant, at our request. I visited the restroom, and it was clean and well-kept. Our server was polite, friendly, and came to take our order shortly after we had looked over the menu and decided what we wanted to eat. Despite the huge portions, my mother and I split the Ali Baba salad with added feta as an appetizer, and it was delicious. The veggies were fresh and crisp, the dressing was amazing, and the feta cheese was perfect. We normally would also split an entree, since we both like the Dajaj Mashwy (lemon chicken), but she wanted the garlic rice on the side, and I wanted the hummus and tabbouleh with mine, so we each got an entree. It didn't take long after we had finished our salad for our entree to arrive, and it was extremely hot and fresh. The chicken fell off the bone, it was so tender, and the hummus and tabbouleh were delicious as well. The pita bread could have been a bit softer and warmer, but I have had pita bread like this in another restaurant, so perhaps it is just my preference. When we were stuffed, we asked for boxes to take the rest home (I am enjoying the cold leftovers while typing this), and asked for a piece of baklava to go. The owner put everything in a to-go bag, and we left, happy and full. Our service seemed split between our waiter and the owner, who may have picked up our table after the restaurant became a little more full. The staff there are very kind and seem to have established a rapport with many of their frequent customers, which I find nice. They also seem to be very laid back, not checking on their tables as frequently as other establishments, which can be both good and bad. I don't like to be rushed through my meal and constantly asked if everything is okay, but had we needed drink refills or had an issue with our food, we might have felt abandoned. Then again, we didn't need anything, and the food was perfect. Also, the owner was very attentive after we had finished our meal and brought boxes and our check promptly. All in all, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Newark, DE area. I have tried other Mediterranean restaurants, and none so far have compared to this one. Give it a try!

This is not a review of the food. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a great hookah session of mixed berry ($18 - I think). The wait staff was cordial and accommodating, especially since they were closing up the inside restaurant area. The outside seating at night in the summer was packed but still relaxing. They also had a great $3 any-beer offer.

Good local place. Pretty consistent good food. Prices are reasonable. Nice menu with vegetarian choices, in addition to the chicken and other meats. Cozy atmosphere. Parking is a little tight as they have a shared lot with other local merchants - free if you can find a spot, otherwise expect to walk a ways. The only reason I can't give it 100% is because service is often very slow, even when it's not very busy. I'd go much more often if I could trust service to be faster.

I miss Ali Baba's & writing my review makes me miss him & his amazing falafel that much more :-( I haven't lived in New Jersey for about 3 months, but when I did, I would drive the 23 miles (ONE WAY), just to go to Ali Baba's. I would plan my trips to the Newark dog park around the restaurant's schedule. In fact, I came back for a visit (I now live in Vermont) and drove past my grandfathers house in NJ straight through to DE to get my falafel fix first. It's that good. It's not super salty like so many other places I've tried. It's never been burnt or under-cooked. The spices in the falafel are the best I've ever had. I always get it with tzatziki and tahini sauce and they never charge me the full amount. I love the toppings they put on it. Everything about this thing is amazing and I'm going to try to go next time I'm in NJ (for a wedding....maybe I'll skip out on the food at the reception and hit up Ali Baba's instead...)

Had a great dinner just off I-95 in lovely Newark (wish I was a student again!). Vegetarian platter was nice (outstanding baba ganoush and excellent falafel). Kids has lamb kebobs and Moroccan chicken--both winners. Straight shot off of I-95 (and you even miss the tolls if traveling from MD to NJ).

This is one of my favorite restaurants. The hummus and baba ganouj are delicious, and the stuffed grape leaves and falafel are amazing. The spinach pie is good too. I usually get the vegetarian platter or the Dajaj Mashwy. The Dajaj Mashwy chicken is moist, tender, and flavorful. It just about falls off the bone. Make sure you order it with hummus and tabouli on the side instead of rice; you don't want to miss out on the hummus here!

What a great little place. I was traveling through Newark DE for some work and found this great place. I have never done a Middle Eastern place but this was just great. The food was very flavorful and the portion sizes were very generous, all matched with very reasonable price. I had the baked chicken and rice. On top of all that the atmosphere was really authentic.

I really can't say enough good things about Ali Baba's... I never really realized just how often I came there when I was in college at UD (1998-2002). It must have been a lot more frequently than I remember, because even though I only make the trip to Newark about once or twice a year now, they STILL remember me and treat me like a VIP. Not only do you get 5 star service, but the food and the ambiance is amazing. I was always a fan of Casablanca (their sister restaurant in DE) before Ali Baba's opened, and I certainly didn't think anything could improve on their 7 course meal. Much to my surprise, this restaurant definitely did! Being able to order all of my favorites from Casablanca ala carte AND choose from a ton more dishes really did the trick! Now when I go, I tend to order a bunch of the salads and appetizers and just make a meal of them, but you definitely won't go wrong ordering entrees. It's a great place for a group dinner as well; they are great about taking reservations and the benches and low tables in the back make for a great group setting, plus they don't rush you. They also now have a liquor license, which is pretty awesome. All in all, I have only glowing compliments to give! Ali Baba is one of the few reasons I wish I still lived in Newark...

Just the hummus and fatoush salad are worth coming here for! As soon as you're seated you start to forget that you're even in Delaware. The colors, motifs, and seating is nicely done giving a warm, casual, exotic feeling. This is a great place to bring a date, come with friends, or just to have a satisfying meal. Start off with a couple of appetizers (did I mention the hummus and fatoush!). You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. A very welcomed destination away from the ordinary!

I've only ever done take out here, but it's good food and good value. I normally get either a doner or a kebab - both are good and I've tried a few different varieties. Hummus is another winner - if you do take out, you'll get enough pita bread to feed an army.

Absolutely fantastic food. Perfect lamb and chicken shish kabob, super spanikopita, and huge portions. Oh, baked chicken was great too. Neat atmosphere, although the stools are a little hard on the back. Very friendly service despite full house. I loved this place!

We've been going to this establishment for a few years now, a quaint, but beautiful restaurant on the main street of the university. Everytime I seem to go, alot has been upgraded to tailor to the needs of their guests which is ever increasing since they first opened. The food, by no means, has not yet been commercialized... or... dare I say, Americanized by the national standard. They serve the right amount for a decent price, and service is very polite and generous. There has never been a time when I felt rushed by our server, as it is mostly understood that this place, among the cushion-clustered seating arrangement and lively middle eastern music with occasional bellydancing, that they'd prefer you to take your time the moment you settle in. The chef is no slouch either. Plate presentation is authentic, and it reminds you to eat with your eyes first but just a few bites of your meal and shared portions from that of your companions is really a treat. The food, by popular vote, is extremely good and has not lost it's cultural presence that is also expressed so creatively in the tapestry, dining furniture and music. When you enter this restaurant, you automatically "feel" like you're embraced in the warm welcome of middle eastern hospitality. So next time, take your date, a few friends or your family and try something new. It'll be worth it.

The best Middle Eastern food I've ever had in my entire life. I used to go here when I went to boarding school, and I've since been going to college in NYC and I can tell you that there is not Middle Eastern restaurant in NYC (and there are a lot) that is better than Ali Baba's. Even with all of the good food here, I constantly find myself saying, "God, I wish Ali Baba's was right here in NYC!" Everything I've had here has been awesome. Here are my favorites though. Baba Ghanoush/ Baba Ghanuj Lamb Kebab Chicken Kebab Moroccan Chicken Samosa Fingers They also have absolutely amazing falafel, and baklava. The salads are good too. Everything is good. The portions are very generous.

HUGE portions! Their kebab dishes are huge and big enough to feed two hungry people, hummus is standard with rather bland pita, the eggplant salad is HEAVEN ON EARTH, and mango juice is absolutely refershing~ The food takes a while to get out, but the setting is ornate and fun. Eat outside if you wanna hookah!

The staff here are very friendly and helpful. I came here with my co-workers and everything we got was delicious. I got the baked chicken and the meat was very tender and fell right off the bone. It comes with tasty rice and makes for a nice dinner. One of my co-workers got Baba Ghanoush since it reminded him of Seinfeld, and it wasn't what we expected, but still worth a try. The atmosphere and seating arrangement is so unique from any other restaurant in the area. That, plus the extensive menu choices makes this place worth a try.

My friend and I went to Ali Baba based on several recommendations by local Delawarians. Nice place with lots of Middle Eastern arts and designs. What we ordered: 1. Ali Baba's Hommus w/ Pita - $6 2. Spinach Pie - $4 3. Ali Baba's Salad with Feta (Friend) - $7 4. Dajaj Mashwy - Home-style baked chicken - $11 The hommus with Pita was very good. I didn't like the Spinach pie that much because there was a lemon type sourness to it. As for the baked chicken, it was served on a bed of rice with a side of hommus. The baked chicken was so tasty and tender. The meat literally just falls off the bone. Very good dish. Service was good. Would've been nice if they took away the empty dishes. Seemed short staffed that night. Mastercard and Visa only. Free Parking lot in back of restaurant. Update: 09/12/2007 --------------------------------------------------Â---------------- Other delicious dishes of note: Raising this place from 4 stars to 5 stars - Baba Ghanuj - $4.00 - Morrocan Chicken (Spicy) - $13.00 - Mujadara (Vegetarian) - $7.00 - Kafta Kabob (Ground Beef) - $11.00

Hubba yumma, just go! 1. They finally got a booze license. 2. Takeout is quick and reliable. 3. They are nice to kiddos. BUT. A bit noisy on weekend nights. 4. Bastilla. 5. Moroccan roast chicken (spicy or lemon). 6. Any appetizer. BUT do not get a house cocktail--they have some crazy, undelicious ones that might ruin your buzz.
My experience with Middle Eastern food is decidedly limited. I've had it maybe 2 or 3 times total. However, I can say that Ali Baba's is a great restaurant even if you're not familiar with the menu, just be sure to go with someone who is. I recently visited Ali Baba's on a Friday for lunch with 14 people (we had reservations). The staff were very friendly and seated us in the back room right away, where they have couch-style seating. The decor and music are appropriately Middle Eastern (or so it seemed to me). For appetizers, we sampled the Ali Baba's hummus, and two other dishes that I forgot the name of, but they were some sort of potato roll and the other was a cinnamon pastry-type dish. All three were tasty and great for sharing. The rest of the menu is very extensive, and the prices are very reasonable. I got a lamb pita wrap for $6, and I think the most expensive thing there is only $15! The lamb was tender and marinated in some kind of sauce, and the other ingredients tasted fine. Others in my group who got kabobs said that they enjoyed the meal. Finally, we got baklava for dessert, and it was probably the best I've had! The only minor complaint I have is that sometimes service is a little slow, I only saw two people waiting tables. But I would definitely recommend Ali Baba's to anyone whether they like Middle Eastern food or they've never tried it.

You will be hard pressed to find better Middle Eastern food without traveling to Philadelphia. I've gone here with friends, dates, and by myself, and have always been very happy afterwards. I'm half Arab and grew up with most of the food they serve. I've tried hummus from just about every place in Newark (Iron Hill, Homegrown, Pita Pit, UD) and they're all junk compared to Ali Baba. I can honestly say that the only hummus I've had that I thought was better was my mothers. As far as the kebab, chicken, and falafel go, I haven't had anything like Ali Baba since I was last in Amman, Jordan. I've tried most of the stuff on their menu and it's all delicious. I'm a big fan of lebne (thick yogurt) and if I was going to recommend something that people haven't tried before that would be it. I believe the owners are Lebanese, and I think almost all of the staff is also. As a result they know Arabic food. They are very friendly and take service very seriously. They also serve hookah (nargila) on the front patio. This is very popular amongst college students. While I generally skip the hookah, since I have my own, I've always been happy with the quality of their hookahs and shisha. Besides they're the only place in Newark with hookah. I only have one complaint about Ali Baba. The decor. It has the spirit of a Middle Eastern restaurant, and I'm sure most people find it really fun and different. But if you're used to seeing authentic Middle Eastern decor and construction, you might find it a bit tacky. This is pretentious nit-picking on my part. Funnily enough when a friend of mine was visiting from Palestine he went to Ali Baba, and told me that he was surprised how good the food was. That being said, he had no desire to go back there, since he wanted to eat American food (Burgers and Hot Dogs).

Ali Baba was a weekly treat when I was in college, and I'd still recommend them with some caveats. Their best food is on their lunch menu- gyro, shwarma, and the like. Oddly, you can get these items as takeout during dinner hours, but can't sit down to eat them in house, even when there are no other customers! I asked the owner why this was the case, and he said if he let me sit and eat, he'd have to let everyone else do so......Oh no, what a nightmare scenario- customers! Any way, they are nice folks and the appetizers are good. Stuffed grape leaves and hummus are the best.

The lamb wraps are delicious with a cool tahini sauce. I've also tried the chicken pastry dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar and it basically tastes just as weird as it sounds.

awesome decor. i love sitting on the couches, not so much the stools though haha. i always feel so sleepy and relaxed with all the red and orange colors and low lightening. the food is super good, super fresh, and as far as this lil all american white girl knows... super authentic. they have great veggie platters. their pita and different hummus combos are great, the pita is always perfectly soft. i really like getting their take out too, they give good size portions.

(4)Morgan G.
(4)Alex B.
(5)Stephen K.
Great food, very plesant atmosphere, and great service. These folks treat you like family, so stop by ASAP and have a great middle eastern expierence here in the USA.
(5)Renee B.
(5)Erica L.
Food is always top notch at good prices. Anything with lamb and rice is my go-to pick! However, service usually ends up being so-so, especially if the hookah tables are crowded. You end up getting forgotten at times, at least if you're inside. I'll still come back for the food though.
(3)R A.
(1)Omar A.

(4)Cassandre L.
(5)Lori K.
(5)Kevin W.
Great food and especially great customer service. A great place to hangout with friends on a weekend. The portion are really big. If you like to eat then you won't regret going there.
(5)Kelly M.
(4)Rahaf O.
The right place for everything food is amazing hookah is incredible most of all ppl there are like a family member I love this place if ur in DE and u didn't go there u missed it
(5)Briahna M.
(5)Bryan B.
(4)Beth M.
Splendid experience from start to finish!! I ate the Morrocan chicken, spicy- texture perfect , spicing hot but flavorful - just a sublime experience . Casual, cool decor, fun low tables to sit at. Family friendly, too. I wish we lived closer!!
(5)Ashley M.
Their chicken was bangin! And my girl loves the lamb. I would recommend this place. However the service was slow AF.
(5)Colleen N.
My food has always been great! Much better when eating inside. I never usually wait around for hookah anymore. It doesn't matter what time or day you go, it's always crowded with annoying college kids.

Great food!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. Whenever I'm in Delaware I make sure to have at least one meal here. And they always remember my favorites.
(5)Kelly C.
(5)Sam F.
The culture is spectacular. I died and went to hookah heaven here. Although watch out because if you just get a hookah, they will pressure you into buying food. The waitstaff is nice and deserve big hugs.
(5)IQ C.
(2)Joe M.
(4)Eva and Zach A.
So great relaxed atmosphere. Delicious food and perfect service. Also a hookah bar. Super value.
(5)Pete A.
(5)Jessica M.
We started our meal with the Ali Baba Hummus and Stuffed grape leaves. Both came to our table quickly! The hummus, coupled with the ground beef on top, was savory and delicious. The stuffed grape leaves, had intense flavor with an almost creamy, decadent filling. Both appetizers were superb; however, their pita bread was just the star of our apps! Perfectly cooked, perfect taste and consistency! We went through two baskets!! Main entrées, Lamb kabobs: the lamb was tender and flazorful, skewered with small onions. Combined with the hummus, tzatziki, tabouli salad, and that delicious pita... incredible. I find it hard to order anything here other than their Samke Harra: a very generous portion of flaky salmon, roasted on a plate with sauces, spices, tomato, onion, etc. And then the fresh lemon slices they add, I squeeze on top!! It is my favorite dish on the menu! Well worth the $18 price tag! Large enough to split, in my opinion, especially if heavy ordering in the appetizers. Overall, Ali Baba does not disappoint. Service is exceptional, food flavorful, decor and seating personable and encouraging to good conversation!
(5)Joe C.
(4)Jacqueline W.
Amazing food. Never had a bad meal here. Love love love the Ali baba hummus and rice and chicken kabob.
(5)Marisa T.

(4)Lia B.
this place is very cute. my boyfriend and i ate here last night and we ordered the veg platter, the carrot salad, and the veg rolls.
(4)Rebecca B.
(5)Saeid E.
(1)Natalie L.
My husband and I love this place. The food is amazing and tastes very authentic. Their hummus is really good. The Moroccan chicken is very tender. I love their pita bread and their mint tea is good. Love the ambiance..they have fun couches and pillows.
(5)Lashonda T.
Food was excellent & love the hookah blows nice !!! It didn't get a 4 because the service is slow & it can become crowded . You only can smoke the hookah outside.
(4)Melissa B.
Very nice. Service was wonderful. He made us feel so comfortable. We had to wait at the outside tables and wasn't able to drink because it was pretty busy but still had fun.
(5)Elana B.
(4)Gwynedd D.
(5)Zoe S.
(5)Ernie L.
Fantastic. 10/10 Humus. But everything on the menu rules. Hookah if you dig that, and the staff are super cheery.
(5)Tasha V.
food was ok I just for a chicken wrap. It was my fiancé birthday and they played happy birthday really loud outside and lit a sparkler candle thing on a dessert. Waiter was great it was his birthday also!! Then when outside to smoke hookah. We had a good time! Will be going back!! Don't get the espresso-coffee it's awful! Otherwise good food good people!!
(3)Jarett J.
(5)Daniela W.
Yummy, fresh food. Service, however, though pleasant, very slow. Will go back again.
(4)Nhu T.
My boyfriend and I stop by on a daily basis. What can I say? We love it! Can never go wrong with the Ali Baba Hummus and the Dajaj Mashwy. The chicken is so juicy and just falls off the bone, while the rice is fluffy and flavorful. Yum-O.
(5)Marie C.
(4)William D.
(4)Katie L.
(3)Geri W.
Lovely decor and great vegetarian selection. Lentil soup could use a little more seasoning, but hummus and baba Ghanouj were awesome.
(4)Dave M.
-Food is fresh -Service is polite, prompt -Ambiance is cool -Lots of vegetarian options -Hookah bar on the patio (smoking is strictly outside; no smell or annoyance inside)
(4)Andrew R.
wowee. how fantastic is this place? we had baba ghanuj, grape leaves, falafel, carrot salad and mujadara. i would order every one of them again. awesome sauce people.
(5)SJ L.
Really crowded and hookah is only done outside. The wait for a table with hookah was about an hour. The service is fine, though. When we were finally seated, it was apparent the servers tended to the college students more, which is understandable since they are regulars and probably more irritable. The food was great. The baklava comes in taster portions.
(3)Kristin B.

Great for vegetarians. My fav is spinach pie)

Very friendly, comfy atmosphere. The food was outstanding.

(5)Vishal B.
Good times!
(3)Oscar D.

(5)Carolyn N.

(4)Hillary B.

(5)Igor O.
One of the better restaurants in Delaware. I would recommend the Moroccan Chicken. Just wish the beer selection was better.
(5)Summi R.
(4)Andrew H.
(5)Josh E.
(4)Tara W.
(2)Wooj H.
Delicious Mediterranean restaurant. They do take a while to bring your food though. Ask to be seated outside if you want to smoke hookah!
(4)Kelly C.
Excellent place to go and enjoy some authentic middle eastern food. If you like ambiance this is also a great place! Tables and pillows make you feel like you are in Aladdin. The food is amazing! The waitstaff excellent! We had a great lunch! I well def. return!!!
(4)Yingbo W.
(3)Tian W.
Long time waiting, and I guess I m not a big fan of Middle East food, the morrocan chicken is supposed to be good but turn out sour and spicy
(3)Abhijit G.

(5)Kyle M.
This is one of my favorite restaurants! Great prices and great food. Try the eggplant salad. Great variety of food including vegetarian options. Service is always friendly and I have never felt like service was slow. Highly recommended!
(5)Dan W.
(3)Kfaali K.
Totall garbage, food & service, messed up orders & zero service.kids went hungry for over 25 minutes, servers changed, but bill was brought asap....never again...very disapointed maybe they treated us due to our middleeastern looks......
(1)Peter C.
As an Israeli living in Newark, I like Ali Baba. It is run by Israeli and Lebanese Druze. The food is authentic. Try the Moroccan chicken. Delicious mezze. I believe that the food is halal.
(4)Robert K.
Try the stuffed grape leaves. Note that it isn't usually open for lunch.
(4)Kara T.
(5)Noise J.
Great chicken kebabs as long as you don't mind sitting amongst college kids who are too cool for school and occasionally their not so cool parents. Great service, great food and try the nectar fruit drinks!
(3)Angela M.
(5)Mark K.
One of my favorite restaurant. Food and service are great.
(5)Julia W.
(3)Savannah M.
I love their Shish Kabobs!
(5)May S.
(4)Siobhan S.
(5)Stefan E.
Awesome chicken shwarma pita! Quick service, open late and great value!
(4)Mark H.
(5)Kate E.
(5)Jeffrey K.
(4)Natalie M.
(5)Momo J.
(5)rex x.
best staff/service: quick, kind, and attentive phenomenal food: great portions & unique flavors and cool atmosphere! if your looking for a unique dining experience in Newark, Ali Baba's is the place to be!
(5)Stephen M.
I've only ever done take out here, but it's good food and good value. I normally get either a doner or a kebab - both are good and I've tried a few different varieties. Hummus is another winner - if you do take out, you'll get enough pita bread to feed an army.
(4)foodie j.
Good spread and not too expensive. Worth a visit or two?
(4)Bob D.
Awesome. LOVE the Spicy Moroccan chicken and Baba Ganoush. For dessert you must have the baklava. Ambiance is great, but we usually order as take out. Wish we lived closer, we'd be there weekly.
(4)Robert S.
Absolutely fantastic food. Perfect lamb and chicken shish kabob, super spanikopita, and huge portions. Oh, baked chicken was great too. Neat atmosphere, although the stools are a little hard on the back. Very friendly service despite full house. I loved this place!
(5)Yasmeen F.
(4)Samantha Q.
(5)Christie K.
(4)Eugene H.
(4)Jim O.
Order the Moroccan Chicken. You won't be sorry. And if you are so inclined, the front porch is the ideal location for an after meal hookah session.
(4)Lakshmi K.
One of my favorites on main street. Their falafel is mouth watering. Not recommended for a quick business lunch.

Found this via Yelp- thanks. Two beers, baked chicken, rice and more pita than I could eat for under $20. I'd come again.

This is my fifth visit. Whenever I'm in Newark, usually attending a play at the Chapel Street Theatre, I dine here. The food is well prepared, the portions are not overwhelming. You'll enjoy fine Mid-Eastern cuisine, attractive ambience, friendly and accommodating service. This is not a fast-food joint, instead a place for leisurely dining. Ordering a home-made soup or a starter, which arrives soon enough, you'll not notice if your entrée doesn't rush to the table. Of special note: there is no attempt to rush you out. And the baklava is loaded with pistachios; don't pass it by.
