It's certainly out of the way, but worth the trip! The decor is a bit outdated, but the food is not. We have been here several times and have never had a bad meal. They were understaffed last night, but the staff remained positive, and were able to get our meals out to us in a decent amount of time. Would highly recommend this place to couples or families.

Carnitas was delish. Donato is back at this location. Don't be thwarted by exterior. Interior is beautifully designed to authentic Mexican cantinas. Food is authentic as well. There is a nice size bar area, makes me thirsty for a pitcher of Margaritas.

La Quetzalteca, in my opinion, is the best around this area. The food is reasonably priced, and consistent. I have never had bad service, and they have some good drink specials. Strawberry and lime margaritas here will knock you on your as*! I eat here atleast weekly.

I ate here at the end of August when I was in Delaware. This time it wasn't as good as usual. We were all looking forward to the hot, fresh tortilla chips that are served when you are seated. When we got there we were given stale, cold chips. They tasted like you could buy them in a supermarket. When I asked the waiter for hot chips that were just made he told me that these were fresh. I didn't want to argue with him so we just ordered the food. My husband's entree had guacamole and he said it was not the usual homemade guacamole. There were not any big chunks of avocado in it. It was thinner than other times, maybe it was processed off site. I ordered the shrimp enchilada. The shrimp was really salty. My husband also ordered a dish with shrimp and he also noticed the saltiness. We were a little disappointed in the overall quality of the food. Maybe the staff was not all there because it was the Sunday before Labor Day. Who knows? We went to the best ice cream place in Delaware for dessert - Hopkins Farm in Lewes! That place got a five star rating from me.

We both ordered the fajitas, Tex-mex and the Veracruz. They were both over cooked and bland. The shrimp and scallops were tough and rubbery. The chicken and steak were so dry, they hurt to swallow. They did not have 75% of the beers advertised on their menu. We had to select a different beer twice. Our server was wearing entirely too much perfume to the point it was gagging me. I did not appreciated the bus cart with trash being pushed through the restaurant, it's just professional.

Yikes. No bueno. We tried this place out since we drive past it all the time, and when we walked in we got even more excited--the decor/ambiance is like a big Mexican party--and were highly disappointed with our meals. First off the waiter didn't speak English almost at all. So when we ordered things he seemed confused by some of it, we had to repeat, then worried he didn't understand. Sorry but that's annoying during your dining experience. We ordered chips and salsa--the chips were mediocre at best. We ordered queso--could've come from a jar. The menu was HUGE and looked really appealing. My boyfriend ordered crab and shrimp quesadillas, and he is NOT a selective/picky eater when it comes to quality/taste like me. He ate a couple bites of his quesadilla and reluctantly told me he wasn't going to finish it (he knew I'd implore him to tell me why and then possibly complain depending on the reason since we were both starving and he never leaves almost an entire meal on his plate). He said the crab was clearly not fresh and had probably been sitting a day or two, since he has crab all the time and knows how it's supposed to taste (I don't). When I looked at his quesadilla the crab was brown--I've had crab a couple times and it was never that color. Gross. Waste of an entire meal. I got the big burrito they have. How can you go wrong with a tortilla encasing chicken, rice, beans, etc.? Chipotle does it decently every day! This burrito was the worst I've ever had. The chicken was a weird texture and flavorless. Everything in the burrito actually was pretty bland and unappetizing. On top of that, I specifically asked it they could add cheese since the menu didn't say it included cheese, and the waiter stopped me and assured me "yes, it comes with cheese" even when I showed him on the menu where it doesn't say cheese---you think when I cut into it there was any cheese? Nope. I left almost my entire meal too. I also ordered a frozen margarita, which came to me minutes after I ordered it almost completely melted and not frozen at all. The one thing I will say is, the drinks are cheap. When we came to this restaurant there was almost no one else in the whole place. I don't understand why the drinks and food would suck so badly when no one else was there--they can't use being busy as an excuse. There were flies all over the place and the short time we were there I spent defending all of our food from flies 24/7. It was hot, and they sat the 3 or 4 people/couples that were there right next to one another, so even though it was a big space we had to listen to a baby screaming the whole time and smell the baby wipes while eating our food as the parents cleaned their kid up right at the table. To put it plainly, our experience was so crappy we were laughing about it and it became a joke of the day. We won't be back!

Cool decor, awful food. The "queso" is velveeta and canned salsa. The enchilada sauce is obviously from a can. Skip this one.

This was an incredible dining experience. Everything was seasoned correctly and the taste spot on. If you are a local you probably already know about this place. The secret is now out!! If you are at the beach or in the rt 24 area make it a point to drive towards Millsboro. If you are craving Mexican you need to try this place out. You won't be disapointed. We had a well put together Patron Margarita and chips as we waited for our meal. The salsa was incredibly flavorful they need to bottle it up and sell it. Dinner consisted of enchiladas and fajitas. The portions were not skimpy - expect to take home leftovers.

One word for it.....Bleh!!! I was starving by the time we found this place on Route 113 and that still didnt get me to like anything that we ordered there. The nachos tasted stale. I wanted to try the Quetzalteca Special which was described as tender sliced beef, chicken, shrimp, and chorizo, served with fried onions, pico de gallo, guacamole, rice, beans and totillas. But for $16.95, the dish was unispiring, bland and the shrimps left me with a bad after taste of chlorine. The over dose of salt didn't make things any better. Giving it 2 stars just coz the waiter was very sweet and she taught me to say La Q-W-E-T-Z-E-L-T-I-K-A with a Spanish accent.

As Mexican on the Shore goes, this may be a honest as it gets. The food is uncomplicated. But the plates are brought out scalding hot! The molé, I'm told, is made on premises. However, it lacks the complexity that I once experienced in the stuff in California. The salsa at the Cactus Cafe in nearby Selbyville, frankly, is far better and fresher. This salsa was thin, uncomplicated, and tasted like it may have come from a jar. I admit, I was hoping for a bit more from the place. Still, it puts the irrationally popular Plaza Tapatia to shame.

We LOVE La Quetzaletca! We have been coming here for years, and we always have fantastic food. We won't go anywhere else for Mexican food...The other local Mexican restaurants are simply not as good as La Quetzalteca. I often stop there on my way home for take-out, or to pick up a flan for dessert! The staff is friendly and warm, food comes out FAST and hot! Their fajitas are fabulous, as is their carnitas. I also love their chimichangas and their quesadillas. Try a pitcher of their Presidential margaritas..!! : ) They have a back room for private parties or large groups, and the rest of the dining room is colorfully and beautifully decorated. So glad to have La Quetzalteca to always count on whenever we want a quick, delicious, hot mexican meal : ))

This is a great place to get standard Mexican fare at a decent price. Nothing high end or fancy...but my family has been here a number of times and always enjoyed it. You may even catch a roving guitar player on Friday or Saturday nights.

Nice enough staff but the place needs a "Once over" in the cleanliness department. Food was OK but not enough for a return visit. Wilted lettuce on the plate was a turn-off.

This restaurant must have gone downhill since the other reviewers were here. The food was completely uninspired. The cheese dip was pale and watery. The guacamole tasted like the supermarket brands that come in a baggie. The salsa was thin and bland. The chicken enchiladas were decent but the beef enchiladas were almost inedible. We were unable to taste any alcohol in the margaritas. They couldn't even make a frozen lime margarita on a Saturday night because they were out of mix! We won't be back. Looks like others feel the same way, the place was deserted when we were there.

Very good food, their salsa is the best I have ever had!!! Try the Texas Margaritas they are the best and you can get them by the pitcher. Dos Equois XXX Amber on tap. Faitas are the best, orginal Mexican decor. Interior was done by Artisians from Mexico, not bought from some resturant dealer. Ask for Donato, he is the greatest server. The Possum Pointer.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
