Excellent Maryland crap soup. Full of large chunks of vegetables. Their regular chicken and dumpling soup is very good also. I wish they had a better selection of main meals.

Good down to earth no frills home cooked food. Chicken is great(come prepared to wait for your order to be cooked, it can take some time but is worth it) and soups are also. Desserts are the best. Salads are good but disappointingly small. And counter help is hit or miss, I have left on occasion wondering if I did something to piss them off or if they are just always miserable.

Lettie's is a family-owned restaurant that serves homemade comfort food at reasonable prices, in a quaint setting. The broasted chicken is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Moist, juicy and bursting with flavor on the inside...crispy, salty goodness on the outside. It's like nothing I've ever had before. I'd even say it was the best chicken I've ever had. They also sell really, REALLY good homemade (of course) sides, like marinated vegetables, potato salad, macaroni salad, etc. You can take it to go, sit in their cozy indoor dining area, or if it's nice out, sit on the spacious wraparound porch. I am SO glad I discovered Lettie's. I will be coming back again and again.

I stopped by Lettie's with my mom yesterday for a late lunch before heading up to PA to visit Longwood Gardens. I'd had Lettie's bookmarked for at least six months, and recently saw that they won Best of DE Editor's Choice for fried chicken. In light of my not-so-secret love of Southern/soul food and fried chicken in particular, I knew that I needed to check Lettie's out, esp. after seeing the tantalizing photos on Yelp. Per other Yelpers' advice, I called in my order en route 20 min. ahead of time, which worked out perfectly for us. Upon arrival, I gave them my name for the chicken, and we ordered sides of potato salad and mac and cheese, as well as freshly brewed iced tea to drink (note: they only brew unsweet iced tea). After ordering, we took a seat on the wraparound porch, and they brought the food out to us in less than 5 min. From my first bite into a drumstick, it was clear that this was the best fried chicken I'd ever put in my mouth. The skin was perfectly crisp, with the perfect amount of breading to give it a satisfying crunch, and the meat was tender and oozing with moistness. My mom told me that this chicken was the closest she'd ever had to my great grandmother's fried chicken from Arkansas, and was "real Southern fried chicken." For my part, I can say that it's better than the fried chicken I had at several well-known Southern restaurants in Atlanta, as well as any fried chicken I've had to date in Pittsburgh. As difficult as it is for me to admit, it's even better than my own fried chicken! My only minor criticism is that the breading was a bit salty for my taste--but even so, its texture was so perfect that I can overlook it. As for the sides, both of them were clearly homemade, and were very good. The mac and cheese was made with a sauce that tasted like sharp white cheddar was used, and was on the creamier side of the spectrum. I don't even really like potato salad (I find it very bland), but I tried some and thought it was decent, which is high praise from me. It had small pieces of dill pickle, celery, and hard boiled egg mixed in, giving it some nice flavor and crunch. Needless to say, my mom and I were extremely impressed at the quality of the fried chicken from Lettie's. Although the chicken is technically broasted, since it's cooked in a pressure cooker instead of deep fried, it's difficult to tell that it's not fried--the only difference is that it's slightly less greasy on the outside. My only regret is that I forgot to order dessert, since I would have loved to try the key lime pie and my mom would have liked to try the chocolate cake, both of which I'm certain must be excellent based on the quality of everything else that we tried. If you appreciate good fried chicken and home cooking, Lettie's is a must-try--you certainly won't regret discovering this hidden gem in Hockessin!

Stopped at Lettie's after a tour of nearby Mt. Cuba Center. It was very convenient to the center for any other day-trippers looking for a good lunch. It was 90 degrees out, so we did not want to fill up on too much, so just the 8-pc fried chicken and potato salad were great! (They sell chicken by the piece, which is what I would have gotten had I been alone, but hubs loves his chicken so we got the smallest "meal" deal.) The fried chicken has a brine and a flour based coating which has a slightly bitter taste. My husband LOVED it; for me, it tasted like buttermilk, which I don't care for, although I still thought their chicken was very good. Their crust is more smooth in texture than the more conventional chunky texture you see all over the place. We noted that they do their own thing their own way, and kudos for them for being original. My husband ate 7 of the 8 pieces, that's how much he loved their chicken. The potato salad was WONDERFUL! It was so good that when we finished it we tried to find a similar salad at a deli up here in PA and were sadly disappointed. Lettie's potato salad tastes like a sour cream version, although they informed me there is no sour cream in it. The flavor and texture manages to feel very light and subtle, almost tricking you into thinking you're not eating such a fattening food. It sure made me want to gobble up twice what I normally eat. And, I am still craving more, especially after the disappointment in yesterday's adventure to try to find something similar up here in PA. I guess I have to get that much closer to the Mason Dixon line (under 9 miles from Lettie's), and go back to DE for Lettie's great taste! Note that while you may be tempted to scan the nearby strip malls for their sign, they are actually in an old house converted to the restaurant, so look for that. There are only about four tables inside, and a few more on the porch. You have to drive down the driveway to get to parking in the rear (a couple spots alondside the drive as well). We took prior reviewers' advice about calling and ordering ahead, and that worked well. We were told 25mins and we got it in 30mins, which is pretty good. I would not have wanted to sit there for the whole 30mins, so I'm glad we called it in.

I wanted to update my review because we just had Lettie's cater a party for 100 people at our home. I didn't know that they did catering, but they do! The food (as always) was awesome. In addition to their regular amazing fried chicken, they did a gluten free fried chicken option for us. Our gluten free friends couldn't have been more thrilled- it was delicious. Tom came himself to oversee the event and make sure everything ran smoothly. They did such a great job. And I actually got to have fun at the party instead of emptying trash cans and refilling food trays. I can't recommend Lettie's highly enough. I'd definitely use them again for a party. Everyone loved the food. Thanks guys!

Don't be stupid. Eat here. Everything we had was amazing, but seriously, come here for the fried chicken! I had to order the chicken and dumpling soup, even though it was around 90°, but I'm a sucker for good soup. When I saw that theirs is made with the flat Pennsylvania Dutch style dumplings, I knew that I would love it. Once the heat breaks, I'm going back for a few take home containers of soup and maybe even some pie.

I gave up meat 7 years ago and if i was going to go back, this is the place I would go. The chicken smelled so so so so good. Instead I ordered tuna salad, egg salad and a slice of key lime pie. The key lime pie filling was appropriately tangy, but the real standout was the crust. The egg salad was creamy and eggy. And the tuna salad was excellent. Walking into Lettie's is like walking into your mom's house with food in corning ware trays. The service is a little spotty with folks in sight furiously at work making various food. They look up every once in awhile and tell you to hang on. Eventually someone gets around to taking your order. The wait is worth it and reminded me of the focus and work I saw in my mom's kitchen every night. So make yourself known, have a seat and enjoy the slice of home.

Home cooking at its best. What a delightful treasure. The best fried chicken - so moist and tender, accompanied by delicious macaroni and cheese, delightful broccoli salad, perfect potato salad and yummy cole slaw. Save room for dessert - terrifically tart key lime pie, decadent chocolate cake and a special surprise banana butterscotch pie. Service was so warm and friendly and everything is homemade, from scratch. Definitely worth the trip. We will be back!

This was our first time there. We will DEFINITELY be back! The fried chicken was the best I've had in quite some time! The sides were very good, especially the mac and cheese and the broccoli salad! For dessert don't miss the banana cream pie!

We ordered take-out from this cute little mom-and-pop shop. The fried chicken is superb! Mac & cheese, potato salad, coleslaw - all delicious. The key lime pie was a hit as well. The folks that run the establishment, while friendly are disorganized, and almost forgot to pack half our order.

Great food, great prices. I eat here at least once a week. I really enjoyed the home made desserts. They were original and hit the spot.

We were originally looking for Cassapullas which was closed and walked over to Lettie's hoping to get a decent sandwich. Yum. I don't very often eat things that are fried but they have what's called broasted chicken which has something to do with roasting in a broiler...or something like that. Anyway, I got the Brackenville sandwich, buffalo style and it was really good. Everything was fresh, a quality bun, and all around good. I'm sold on broasting. This is good, homestyle food. I wanted to try this amazing looking pie in the cooler but I was too full by the end of my sandwich. We sat on the patio, which was the perfect day for it and was cute and quaint. If I lived in the area I could totally see that place as a go-to for ordering chicken to-go and getting some mashed potatoes, gravy and an assortment of goodies and having a nice little feast at home.
