Yum yum! Friendly staff and great food. As someone who eats out frequently in NYC, this place is definitely one of the better diners I've been to (minus all the flies flying around, but that can't be helped). The fries are crunchy and their mac n' cheese is made with real cheese. Their burgers are juicy! I added the fried onions and they tasted like onion ring strips on my burger. The food came out pretty quickly, maybe within 5-10 minutes of having ordered it. I'd definitely stop in again if given the chance. Everything is very well priced! The food pictures on here don't accurately convey how yummy everything is.

Don't go here until the fly problem is resolved. There were countless flies on the walls, tables, and surrounding our area as we ate. We were unable to finish our meals as flies were landing on the plates and food. Pretty gross. The food wasn't particularly flavorful either. It's a shame because other reviews seemed pretty positive.

Stopped in for a late lunch! Great place! The people are friendly! We entered the small dining room and were instructed to sit where ever we liked. Our waitress came up immediately and took our drink order. She returned quickly with our teas. The menu is expansive. All kinds of foods! Sandwiches and platters are just a few options. Complimentary hot rolls were brought out while we waited for our food! The bf had a pork loin stuffed...it looked good! He didn't complain! . I ordered open faced turkey sandwich. The food was big big big! It came out quickly also! There was a huge dessert case with great looking treats inside. We were stuffed tho, so we skipped it! The people were sweet and I would go back again!

Came here with some friends who live down the road and thought it was DELICIOUS!!! I am from SC, so I know some good southern cooking and this did not disappoint. Fried chicken was amazing! Be sure to stop here on your way to the beach, you'll be glad you did.

Found this little gem using Yelp & it's just a quick minute off 113 south of Dover. Being from the south we were skeptical but the homemade chicken & dumplings were simply amazing! Collards a little salty but tasty. I liked the fried okra AND the fresh coconut meringue pie. No alcohol license here which was fine with us. Terrific service too. We'll be back!

Good food, great service. One point off for too many flies! But not judging, because we had the same problem at our beach house all week.

Stopped for lunch on our way home from VA to MA. Menu was varied and food quite tasty. The service was excellent and friendly. There were many homemade pies and cakes that we didn't try but looked delicious. This was a nice change from the standard menu options usually found along the highway. It is right off of Route 113, so very handy.

Excellent home cooking. A must stop if your area. Have eaten there five times never been disappointed with the quality of food the excellent service. This last time I had meatloaf best meatloaf I've ever had with fried okra and yams. My mother had liver and onions mashed potatoes and fried okra. She really loved it.

This diner is a clean friendly atmosphere. The menu is huge and the specials alone are a long list. Usually at diners I go with traditional safe diner food. I decided to step out of my safety zone and I got prime rib. It was seriously the best prime rib I've ever had. Our waitress was so friendly and the owner came out and checked on every table. That's how to do business and this little place shows pride. Also I was so impressed with every person that works there being such hard workers. You get that feel. They all take pride in their work. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in DE. It's great food.

One word..... Awesome! Real homestyle food, like a Sunday family meal at a grandmothers. Just awesome.

Fantastic! We ordered strictly Southern and were not disappointed. Fried chicken took a while (as the very nice, efficient waitress warned us it would) but patience was rewarded with succulent, dark brown moist and crunchy chicken -some of the best I've ever had. Crab cake was delicious as was the green beans. Deviled eggs were oddly sweet, and not to my taste, but overall, we fell in love with this unpretentious but deliciousdiner and look forward to stopping by on many more trips to the Delaware shore.

My husband and I love this place. After moving from Pennsylvania to Delaware we were looking for some homestyle cooking. The portion sizes are large and we always have a take-home box. We have eaten breakfast lunch and dinner at this restaurant on multiple occasions. The service is very pleasant and fast. Seating is limited and they definitely get crowded on weekends. It is worth the wait. For breakfast they have wonderful French toast that doesn't even require syrup. Pancakes and eggs made to order along with extra crispy bacon are delicious. Couple favorites for dinner include their crab dip as an appetizer her. Also their turkey dinner is enough to feed two people. We have yet to have a bad meal here. The desserts are unbelievable. The banana pudding is delicious and goes so fast. I have friends from Georgia and they love the grits.

What an awesome find on the way to the beach! Wonderful grilled trout for lunch, while a little overcooked (I like sushi!) was delicious as were the friend green tomatoes; Fried chicken, collard greens and mashed potatoes were also good for my friend. Dessert was incredible, as we knew by looking at them on the way in - we had their specialty, pecan cheesecake pie and their strawberry pie. Can't wait to stop back and try some more!

Outstanding chicken and dumpling specials, tasted homemade. Service was prompt and attentive. The owner and cook also came out to all the tables to talk to the patrons and make sure everyone was satisfied. Never thought I would have a reason to be in ellendale, but I will absolutely be coming back.

Been here many times before at their other location and food was always great and reasonably priced. I took a ride to the ocean beaches this past Sunday, being it was a nice day and decided to stop by on the way back home. I noticed the new location as the waitress told me they moved here a few years ago. I ordered the crab cake and oysters platter and chose my two sides as mac and cheese and corn fritters. The platter arrived and I could not believe the portion for the price, $16.00 for a small crab cake which to me tasted frozen and three small oysters which tasted so, so. What a rip off for the price. The corn fritters were good and mac n cheese ok. The best part was my soup I got first, cream of crab. The menu has a large selection of items, but to me pricy. Service was good and staff friendly, but probably will not return. Not worth the price you pay for portions and taste .Last location was better.

I've never seen so many flies chilling in a place I was trying to eat. Working on a farm growing up, it reminded me of a barn with the amount of flies swarming our food. Had I known I'd have brought a few fly strips. Also, I didn't feel like the portions were that great or the quality of the food anything to write home about in general. On the bright side, the service was great and the staff was friendly. We were even given free Italian ice for the kids and chicken dumplings. The owner greeted us and was very friendly and generous. Despite this I still wouldn't return or recommend this to any of my friends.

Excellent clam strips. The best I've had in this area. Tender clam and not overly breaded. The mac & cheese and corn fritters are winners too. Good home cooking at reasonable prices.

Dieters beware. This restaurant is not for you. If, however, you find yourself in Delaware looking for good Southern cuisine, this is the place to go. I would go back for the sweet tea alone. So nice to find a place North of the Mason-Dixon that understands the exquisite pleasure of sweet iced tea. The dinner rolls that they bring to the table are fresh and warm. For dinner, I had the mac and cheese (good, but a bit mushy and bland), the fried green tomatoes (also a bit bland and could have used some dipping sauce), and corn on the cob (plain, boiled, tasted good though). I tried some of my mom's corn pudding (which I know by the name creamed corn) and it was very good. I would definitely order that when I go back. My sister order the ham, which was a very large, round, thick ham steak. It smelled very good and almost had me reconsidering my last 12 years as a vegetarian.... I also ordered the cherry cheese delight to go. It is just like very soft cheesecake. Really decadent and yummy. Basically, the food is fresh and like homemade. Sometimes this ends up being a little too homemade in that it can be a bit bland. However, there are definitely some gems on the menu and this is a worthwhile stop. The food is a very good value, with side items only costing a few bucks. I also liked that the side items were not too large.

Great comfort food! Hit this place to get out of beach traffic based on Yelp reviews. We walked in around 4 which turned out to be the beginning of their dinner peak. Our waitress was very kind and the menu had plenty of options. Because it's all home made, it took about 35 minutes to get our food for our party of 5. However it came out steaming hot and tasted well worth the wait. They had awesome looking dessert on display, and we'll certainly stop by again to try them out.

The service is friendly....they are brand new so you have to expect the girls to be learning the restaurant as they grow. The guy who owns the place has a long history in the area and knows what he's doing... The food is excellent and the prices are reasonable...portions are huge...quality is better than you would expect from a diner type environment...tastes homemade because most of it is.

A nice place, excellent food, enormous portions. But the staff handles food after touching money with no hand washing in between. I come here a lot because I work across the street but watching a teenager put her grimy mitts all over someone's salad really gagged me when I came here tonight.
(5)Mark S.
Good food. Fresh seafood, oysters had no bitter taste, excellent crab cakes and flounder. Prices reasonable.
(4)Ashley Ann T.
We ate here twice in one weekend. Dinner and breakfast. Chicken was great. The seafood was fabulous. Breakfast was hot and fast. Fair prices and large portions.
(5)Chris C.
Have been here twice now, and have not been disappointed. Prices reasonable, service friendly, very large menu. Very good food you would expect along the coast, with a homestyle flair and large portions. I will be going back!
(4)Emily T.
Came here on the way to the beach, good homestyle food (we got seafood sandwiches), took a while to get our food so don't come if in a hurry

Amazing southern comfort food!

I found the Southern Grill on a random search through the internet and figured that we would give it a try; Wow, what a great place to eat! The server was kind, knowledgable, and fast. She brought us a complementary serving of Lima bean and Dumpling soup that was tasty and fresh. Our hot, fresh yeast rolls were heavenly. My friend has the Steak Imperial that was large and cooked perfectly. It had an abundant amount of crab meat and was topped with homemade cream of crab. My dinner was the Country Fried Pork Chops that came with fresh green beans and homemade macaroni and cheese. Personally, for under $10, I have never seen so much food on one plate. The dessert made us salivate and debate on how many to take with us. If you are ever in the area or passing through, this is the restaurant to try!
