I'm a huge fan of hibachi, as I've previously mentioned. This place is probably the best Japanese steak house in Dover, perhaps on merit of being the only one. It was okay. I have had better hibachi. The chicken was a little overcooked, and his knife wasn't quite sharp enough to get through it well so the presentation was off. The well done steaks he served appeared to have burned slightly. The rice was, I suspect, not as high quality as it could have been. It didn't clump well for chopsticks, which I had to ask for. As far as entertainment value, it was not great. The chef was so interested in talking to his real estate agent that he completely ignored the girl at the other end of the grill, who was there for her birthday. On the plus side, the host/waiter was very attentive, and made no fuss when we took issue with the bill (early bird specials make me feel like an old person... who saved like 15 bucks. Ha!) Also, the salad dressing was amazing. I'll probably go back again anyway. Let's be honest... there aren't that many choices in Dover.

It's a decent Japanese Steak house. Not outstanding, but probably some of the best that dover has. Filet was good, chicken was just okay. If you like the "Japanese" steak house show, it's worth going to.

This is awesome that I'm the first person to review one of my top fave Japanese resto's in Dover, DE. To give you a back story of my life, I had lived in Dover for 6 years while stationed at the Air Force Base... so I considered myself a Delawarian for a while... until, thankfully, I moved to San Francisco. So I may be slightly harsh in terms of dining needs that absolutely need to be met by businesses that serve food. So, one positive of Hibachi is the fact that they are conveniently located on the main highway that runs the entire length of Delaware (US-13). Luckily, I had lived close to Hibachi at Silver Mill apartments which were, literally, right across the street. During days of major traffic caused by the notorious NASCAR races, I had just walked to have a good sushi roll or two... or three or four. LOL I remember having my friends take me to Hibachi for at least 3 of my 6 birthday celebrations while living in Delaware. The ambiance was a comfortable Asian house feel (think low ceilings and a big-ass fish tank with colorful creatures that call it home). As a customer, you and your guests have the option to sit at either the traditional hibachi-style grilling area where chefs arrive with uncooked ingredients and cook the meal right in front of you, or at the sushi bar where you can pick from the ALL YOU CAN EAT buffet ($20/person; check date/time) and order regular entrees as well. The best food to get were the spider roll, TNT roll (my ultimate favorite), dragon roll and philadelphia roll. The staff are relatively attentive in bringing out your requested meals and the sushi chefs are the best. Customers fill out a piece of paper and choose from the available rolls how many of each roll you want. People... TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ALL YOU CAN EAT!!! Expect to pay no more than $25 a visit (and that's a full stomach).

Was a little concerned going here with the reviews but had an amazing time. I ordered the teriyaki shrimp and my boyfriend ordered the teriyaki chicken (or the Japanese rooster as or chef called it). Both dishes were amazing and the staff was incredible. Never had a dirty dish left in front of us, drinks were always filled, and the chef put on a great show while making delicious food.

I've never had hibachi before, and I have to say that the experience here was just about everything I expected. My chef threw his tools around, started a huge fire in front of me, cooked everything, and tossed a few pieces in our mouths. Unless you're going for the early-bird specials, I'd highly recommend eating somewhere else. It's so ridiculously pricey for a 5 minute show. Our food wasn't all that great, and something about the way my cook scraped off the oil and burnt pieces really bothered me... Maybe I'm just not a hibachi person! The verdict? Eat for a one-time show if you're truly curious, and if not? Move on!

We love hibachi, and this place is not that great. Look elsewhere.

How is this place still open? Once a town favorite, Hibachi has let itself go. There have been no updates since its opening- cosmetic or otherwise. It's possible the place has not been cleaned since then as well. It's truly heartbreaking to watch a place people used to look forward to, respect and view as a "treat" turn to complete waste. Everything is done half-assed now. The all-you can eat sushi? A lukewarm, food-poison-waiting-to-happen BUFFET. Sushi and buffet should never been in the same sentence. The only saving grace was when I'd asked for salmon sushi - fresh. This was good. The traditional hibachi grill food has not changed much either. The rice is still perfect. But on my last visit the meat, like the sushi, tasted as if it had been sitting out for a while. The steak tasted old, dry and flavorless- and we ordered it medium-rare. Our chef was a likeable klutz- not a good showman. Something we could have forgiven had the food been salvageable. Our waiter and the hosts were fantastic. Very polite and attentive. End of an Era for Hibachi. I will drive to Tokyo Steakhouse in Rehoboth from now on. Will not be returning.

Excellent food, excellent service. Prompt and polite. Drinks refilled quickly. The chefs here put on a great show and know what they're doing with the food. Our table had salmon, scallops, chicken, shrimp, and filet. The chef had everything started and finished in the right time without a single glitch!

Dinner for 2 on a Friday night and we were seated immediately. It is a sizable restaurant inside. Service was prompt and professional. Pricing for hibachi was lower than other cities with a chicken/shrimp combo going for about $13.95. The chef was friendly and efficient, but was pretty no-nonsense for entertainment. Our dinners included a salad, fried rice, and chicken/shrimp (my selection) and zucchini. The quality of cooking was appropriate, not over salted. What was missing from the meal that ALL other hibachi places serve were: Soup White rice Mushrooms Sprouts Sherbet or ice cream at the end Hot tea with the meal After dinner was over I understood why pricing was lower..... Diners get much less food here than at other hibachi restaurants. Sauces were given at the end of his cooking instead of the beginning so diners ate plain, prepared food. My husband ordered tilapia and his was overcooked. In summary, we were treated pretty well, food was alright, but we still felt like the portion size was not appropriate and the showmanship was minimal, even at the lower cost. We probably will not return in the near future.

Was not impressed, actually disappointed. never went to a hibachi that didn't have clear soup till this one.

HORRIBLE!!!! stay away!!! Combination hibachi does not come with soup and salad, only soup. The waiter, food and service were horrible, no refills, no introduction, and this overweight guy wearing all black paced into the dining area every once in a while to look around like a "bouncer at a club." When he wasn't doing that, he was leaned over the partition watching us and everyone else eat their meal. When the chef or shall I say cook arrived he immediately recognized and aid hello the other guests as they were regulars and apparently were seated at his table before. He went straight to reading our order without saying hello so I said "well, hello" he apologized then said hello. I order the filet and lobster which was saturated in teriyaki sauce. I was unaware of this as this being my first visit so did not feel I had to say "no sauce." For the filet I made sure to tell him no sauce but it was already drenched. Now thinking, he could have given the other people that and given me the untouched steak. He told me "you have to request no sauce to be put on the ticket" are you F'ing kidding me?!?!? I've never heard I such a thing. Needless to say I asked for to go boxes and the check in the middles of the meal. Then they don't even box up the food for you. The waiter then brought out to go boxes for the party of 4 across the table from us and they just started eating after waiting for all of their food to be done. SMH!! On the way out there was a party of 20 or so high school homecoming celebrators.... I hope they have a better experience that we did. Bottom line stay away. This was definitely not worth $80.00 and my tip reflected it greatly. Really deserve ZERO stars!!!

The food was good. Service was horrid!!! Not accommodate to our group of 12. Last call at 10 once we got there! Management women was rude!!!!! Chased us out!!! Stood over us glaring at us!! If it were not for a special outa town guest we'd of walked out! Find another place to spend your money!

Not sure why friends raved about this place!! The service from the hostesses was AWFUL! The cook was mediocre and the restrooms was atrocious!! I am a firm believer of how an establishment keeps their public restrooms is how they keep their kitchen!! YUCK. Would not recommend this place to ANYONE! If you want sushi go to Rice for sure!!

Excellent experience! Not a bad dish on the menu!

Came for all you can eat sushi. Didn't expect too much, and wasn't surprised. They do it in this buffet style, and they really slow down on the good stuff once they run out, leaving you with shitty rolls crammed with cream cheese. I had to search around the restaurant for the server so we could pay and get out of there, but inattentive and clueless service is par for the course in Dover. I actually feel sorry for any business owner in this town who has to sift through this shit labor pool for competent employees.

Enjoy the sushi bar. Not the best in town but the price is good and the staff is too. We eat here often.

I love this restaurant and the wonderful staff. One of the chefs in particular is especially funny and makes the night really fun! I've never had poor service here and all the food is delicious....the presentation is also wonderful. The atmosphere could be better but it works..... as for the sushi I personally don't eat it so I cannot comment but the fillets & shrimp is wonderful....and yes the salad dressing is delicious. The only down side to my experiences is that due to the heat of the hibatchi the ice in ur soda quickly melts and makes it taste terrible. Other than that its all wonderful.

The presentation was entertaining, food just ok. the egg that was cracked into the rice was a cool trick, but left egg shells in the meal. *cringe* I am a firm believer in 'I paid for it, I'm taking it home' but I had no desire to request a to-go box.

This review is about the *sushi bar* only - I haven't been over in the teppanyaki side of the restaurant in years and I don't really care for having my food thrown at me. The sushi bar is pretty small, but also usually not very busy, so we've only ever rarely had to wait for a table, usually on a Friday night. They have all you can eat sushi for $19.95 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, which is the only time we ever go. They open at 4pm, and they do start out with maki rolls when they start making the night's sushi selection, so if you're not into rolls, you probably don't want to be the first one there, or at least you should be prepared to wait until the rolls are finished before they start to put out "the good stuff". After all the rolls are out, they start with the nigiri. They put out a really nice selection. Over the years, there have been times when I got there early and was the only one there a few times, and on those occasions they've sometimes just asked me what I wanted and made that, rather than putting out the typical buffet selection to possibly go to waste. All the staff over in the sushi area is really friendly and helpful. I didn't have to go there many times before they recognized me and knew my "usual" (drink choice and soup-or-salad preference). I debated over 3 stars vs 4 stars and settled on 3, but I'd have liked to have given them 4 just for the mind reading waiter and sushi chefs. They more than make up for the blah decor and the fact that there's a TV going in there. The only real drawback is that sometimes the fact that it's such a good deal and so cheap for sushi can draw in a wide variety of clientele, including the occasional table full of rowdy teenagers or misbehaving kids, or the people who talk on their cellphones at full volume throughout the meal. Those occasions have been few and far between for me, though. Oh, and they do also offer some cooked sushi as part of the selection, and there is a small selection (1-2 items) of other hot/cooked food available as well, like shrimp on a skewer or egg rolls.

Ten years ago this place was awesome. Now...not so much. The idea of hibachi is to get a show while they cook your meal. The cooks hardly do this any more. Some are better than others but I've caught many of them gazing off as if they were bothered by having to cook. They have gotten very cheap on their food. Their shrimp have stunk to half the size they used to be. No longer do they give you a soup with your meal. Really? How much can miso soup actually cost. Their prices have jumped considerably. They've removed the bean sprouts which I personally love. When ordering anything that has teriaki sauce you will have to ask them to put on a reasonable amount. Otherwise you will barely taste it. I say don't waste your money here. They have also let the interior (and exterior) go to hell.

We went for sushi and were sorely dissapointed. The selections are laid out on a wooden bar with no refrigeration. I like my sushi ice cold not room temp. Selection was vast when they got around to refilling the plates (which we didn't see them do in the hour+ we were there). Nothing was labeled. Service was less than poor. The host greeted us with a bark. Apparently there was a 30 minute wait for the hibatchi. She didn't bother to ask if hibatchi was our intention. When we asked about the sushi bar she just waved us away. We found a table at the sushi bar (a cramped little corner in the front of the resto) and sat down. We waited a good 20 minutes for drink and to have a few questions answered. As we were eating dishes kept piling up and no server appeared to take them away. He did, however, keep drinks filled. But left the empty glasses. We will not be returning. Better sushi, selection, and service can be found at Old Town Buffet.
