I can only comment on the drinks... My friends and I hit up Nalu after leaving the Rudder and proceded to order Mai Tai's which I swear were 90% liquor with a splash of color/flavor. It did what I needed it to do. Dunzo.

I like this joint. Just wish there was some more authentic Hawaiian on the menu. Plate lunch needs one extra item as well.

So many restaurant experiences depend on day and situation. I cannot comment on the consistency of this place, as I was only passing through after a long weekend surfing in Penelopen, but I would definitely return. The food was delicious! I ordered the fish tacos and a salad (tacos bueno, salad so so). They were the best fish tacos I've had outside of California. Also, the waitress had had a long weekend, but was totally helpful and friendly.

Nalu is a lot different from the typical bars in Dewey Beach that in some cases are just shacks that are just built or that have been there for years. Nalu has a casual "no-hassle" atmosphere where you can actually hear the person next to you. They bring some of the acts I have seen in Key West up occasionally and you can't miss the Key West festival they have in July - it was a lot of fun - maybe too much. They had a 4 story inflatable Captain Morgan in front during that weekend - I knew I was at the right place. The food is bar food but the drinks are 16 oz drinks for the price of a regular drink at most of the places I have been. The bar reminds me of something from the movie Cocktail - a tiki hut kind of look.

We started with the Kahlua pork spring rolls (a must order) and their famous nachos and washed it down with a giant group bucket cocktail (I forget the name of it, but it's similar to a Bay Breeze). The Kahlua pork sandwich got two thumbs up as did the hawaiian salad and Kahlua pork taco. In short, make sure you get some Kahlua pork when you're here and you'll be happy!

This is a cool little bar. I really didn't like their specialty drinks, but then I asked for him to unsweeten it. Homerun. Nice crowd and friendly service.

Meh, the tacos I had were good. But I got a crab cake as a side (btw, that's $10) to share and it was the size of racquet ball that looked it was scooped out like ice cream. It was cold (refrigerator cold) in the middle and instead of getting me a new one, the just popped in the oven again and brought it back out! REALLY!? Just a warning, the sticky is NOT sweet. They use rice wine vinegar, so it's sour. My wife also ordered a wrap, I'm pretty sure it was about maybe 8 bites to finish it, it was that small. The waitress was very nice and I could tell she was very sorry about everything but I don't think she had much control over it. Overall, it was ok and I really don't like to make bad reviews either but I couldn't help it. Hopefully this is used to help the restaurant and not hurt it.

You come to Dewey beach for a hearty, quick, and booze-filled brunch so you can hit the beach. If that's your plan, then I highly suggest going to other neighboring establishments. If you like staring at each other, and spending a lot of time exchanging stories of the restaurant's service, then this place should be on your list! Our group of 10 called ahead to see if we could get seated right away, and thankfully, we could. We were hungry, and on a mission. The first few minutes of our experience were fine. We were seated, placed our drink and food orders, but after that, it was a complete nightmare. We got drinks at different times, and Bloody Marys without its signature accent of a BBQ-glazed bacon-wrapped shrimp. Menu was limited, but I only saw a few "Hawaiian-esque" items, and maybe because it included spam. After some wait, a server came over with an omelet dish. Since someone in our group did order an omelet, we took it, thinking our other meals would come in sequence. However, that dish was for another table. (Another table that complained about the lack in quality of service, and multiple servers that kept coming over about the missing omelet dish). Some of the food came cold, some missed a side dish, and the food was a bit lackluster. Its only saving grace were the delicious and gargantuan-sized pancakes! Cake-like with the perfect amount of crisp and sweetness. My meal was the breakfast sandwich that McDonald's could have made better, and the side of potatoes did not satisfy as a full serving. Sadly, I don't think I'll visit again. If they delivered their pancakes, I might reconsider!

Picked the Nalu as our nice dinner out while staying in Dewey for two nights. It has a neat, Hawaiian vibe, from the grass hut-looking bar area to the shark suspended from the ceiling. Open windows- big ones- give you the feel of open-air seating...too bad it isn't on the beach. Our family ordered two appetizers off the $5 special menu- Bavarian pretzel sticks and Wonton Shrimp Wraps. We'd hoped the kids would gravitate to the pretzels...nope, they were all about the shrimp. Both got thumbs up from the table. For entrees, kids got a variety of tacos- shrimp, pork, and chicken- and they ate 'em up, no problem. The wife had the Kalua Pork, and I had the crab cakes. Both were great, after the swapping of dishes was complete. Pork was just done well, and the crab cakes were plenty crabby. Total bill after an iced tea was added was $70. Service was fine, but lacked some personality. Too bad, as the rest of the establishment has a good feel to it. Would I go back, were I to go to Dewey for the second time in my life? Probably not...maybe by the third or fourth, I'd be ready to cycle back again...but with Route 1 jammed with a commercial buffet of eateries, I'm sure there are other places to try!

Having 20 years of eating real Hawaiian food under our belts, we have to go to places on the mainland that are giving it a go. We got the kalua pork spring rolls and they were underwhelming. Kalua pork should have a smoky taste but this just tasted like crock pot pork. We each got the loco moco and believe me when I tell you it is big enough to split...and we can pack it in too. It was pretty close but pre-made patties were kind of disappointing. I don't know that we'd go back but it's a decent stab at Hawaiian cuisine.

Food, drinks, atmosphere, and staff were all great! However, I feel as though the prices were a bit steep. I definitely recommend this place though! Super chill restaurant and bar.

It's hard to find a place to eat that satisfies all 12 people (including 6 kids) in our extended family. We went early (5ish) and were pleasantly surprised with the drinks, food and service! The shrimp tacos were the best dish I ate all week long! Jen was very attentive and good with the kids. We'll definitely be making this an annual stop!

Yeeessss. Pork nachos- shut the front door, grab a seat and pull up to the table. Loaded with sweet pork, shredded cheddar, scoop of fresh chunked guacamole, fresh salsa and some cream and topped with fresh slices of jalapeño. That pork is lip smackin' good. If that pork is consistently good like that.. Food network needs to visit- seriously.

Went here for lunch with a party of 15 and can't say enough great things. The atmosphere was great, acoustic guitar player was awesome, service was on point, there was a cool ring toss game that the kids liked, building and restrooms were clean, and most importantly, the food and drinks were amazing. Truly everything was great, not one single person in my party had food or cocktails/brews they didn't enjoy which is hard to do with such a large party. Would go back again and again!

  • John G.

It was mediocre to me, and that's being kind. I had some soup and a sandwich and both were just a bit blah. Nothing special. The soup was some sort of chowder and loaded with rosemary. Not good. The sandwich had spam in it, and really didn't have a taste. Drinks were reasonably priced, but mine was very watered down. Service was also blah. Not very prompt or attentive. The menu is pretty much limited to Hawaiian specialties, though I think true Hawaiians would die if they saw it. Best thing about the place is the atmosphere. I like the layout. Feels good. Bottom line, I'd only go back if I were having beer (which they couldn't possibly screw up) and I was sitting at the bar (where it'd be tough to get ignored).

Best food in Dewey...hands down. Tucked away at the south end of the strip, Nalu is the hidden restaurant/bar where the locals go. Nalu has the best and friendliest bartenders in all of the beach towns. Great beer selection, awesome mixed drinks including their famous "Bucket," original Hawaiian food, and the best taco night in the area. If you haven't tried it yet, don't miss out...you'll definitely regret it.

  • Nicole B.

Nalu has exceeded expectations once again. Starting with the pineapple wheat beer was top notch! Then pork belly which was good. For the finale we shared the Ono burger which is a burger, American cheese, 2 fried eggs, bacon, lettuce, tomato and maybe between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches! Yes, that is correct! 2 grilled cheese sandwiches!! This is a must try!

We went here for dinner and stayed for a live band. The food was okay but everyone in our party felt a little sick after we ate ( we all had different things but shared the nachos, say no to the nachos!). Our waitress was nice and the pricing wasn't terrible. We migrated to the bar area to listen to a live band that was starting up. The patrons at this place are on the older side and a little aggressive but we thought we would stay for a couple of drinks (pricey for Dewey btw) and head out. We ordered our last round and the bartender didn't give us the right drinks. I politely asked the gentlemen behind the bar (with thinning spiked hair) if he wouldn't mind making new drinks. He was surprisingly very annoyed and grabbed a bottle of vodka and poured it all over the drinks and the top of the bar. Like a crazed lunatic, he then started splashing vodka in my face ! Obviously it is never okay to do something like that, but it's not like I was rude or condescending when I requested a new drink . I was smiling and apologetic if anything. I got the sense that he may have been on some sort of drugs .... Needless to say, this ended our night and I ended up filing a police report. There are a lot of places to go in this town, don't waste your time here.

Love this place - especially off-season. It gets too crowded in the summer but so does everywhere else in the beach towns so I guess I'll deal. This is the only place East of Maui that I know has Kalua Pig - it's really good! I also like the wasabi fried rice and the hot & spicy shrimp!

Went with a group for dinner. We had no idea where to go, wandered in here, and were not disappointed. The 5 of us immediately decided to get the Wipe Out, a giant (144 oz) alcoholic concoction that comes in a bucket with straws. The menu says they require a minimum of 3 to drink it, though 5 is a safer number. We also got the nachos, and those were also giant. (Yes, we finished both). I ordered the crab cake sandwich, which was really good...but I was jealous of my friend who got the crab dip burger, which is a huge burger covered in crab. After all that food, our bills came out to about 25 bucks each, a steal (partially thanks to no-tax Delaware). It looks like a hopping place at night as well, but I can give it a big thumbs up for dinner. Remember, get the wipe out.

My family and I went back to Nalu for wings and fish tacos and everyone was very happy this time. We also got the pork quesadillas and they were very tasty! Our service was much more pleasant this time too. We will definitely visit again!

I popped in here for a late lunch with my boyfriend after getting into town and staying at the Best Western across the street this September. I looked forward to a few small appetizers but regretted it later that evening. I ordered a Guinness which was served at no less than 45 or 50 degrees, it was undrinkable. I also had a dynamite (or some named) Sushi roll, which was also miniature, greasy and warm. I did have Buffalo wings, which were indeed tasty, but also miniature. The late lunch rush was tiny, but our service was more concerned with hanging out and side-work than attending to us. We waited nearly 20 minutes just to get a check. I hate to complain, and took the service and bad food in stride, but wanted to write a review to let visitors know to look for a better place. Additionally, I had a bad stomachache about 3-4 hours later, likely from the beer or sushi - very painful and unfortunate!

Not sure how this place doesn't have 5 stars since it was the best food we ate while we were in Dewey. I had the Waikiki Ahi sandwich with caramelized onions soy sauce & a fabulous wasabi mayo that was to die for! We had a crab dip which was awesome! The nachos were good but I am not a huge fan of them to begin with. The fries are amazing and I am pretty picky when it goes to raving about fries. I had a sip of a pineapple drink which was toooo good. Definitely a place to go and I cant wait to get back next time I am in town!

This place was just okay. We came here for a family dinner after not wanting to deal with the crowds in Rehoboth. The service was friendly and the drinks were tasty and reasonably priced. However, the entrees were very expensive for the serving given, and were just so-so quality/taste wise. I wouldn't recommend this place for a full meal, but is alright for a quick drink or snack.

Nalu is my favorite place in all of Dewey. My second time here and although it was only for the bacon festival, the bacon wrapped grilled pineapple drizzled with caramel was one of the best things we ate all day. It was sweet and hot and salty, absolutely fantastic!! Nalu is one of the few places on our repeat list for the summer.

  • Tony B.

I was a little disappointed with the service. On a weeknight with half the tables filled, our waitress kept disappearing for long periods of time. Aside from that, the food was pretty good. The sashimi tuna poke was outstanding. Fish tacos are pricey ($6.00 each) , and just OK. Korean BBQ Ribs could have been cooked a little longer, but still not bad. Priced like a high-end restaurant, but in reality, it's just another beach bar with food served in red plastic baskets. The major issue is parking in Dewey. It's almost created to make you a parking violator. Careful where you park.

Excellent wait staff - extremely attentive and accommodating. Just had their happy hour shrimp wontons - hot damn they were tasty. Plus their mountain of nachos are to die for, a perfect mid-beach day meal

Best fish tacos ever! I'm from md and we visit Dewey just for the Monday 1/2 price tacos... I wish they had more daily specials like they had last year. Other than that, grrrrrrreat!

Nalu was our very first dining experience when visiting Dewey/Rehoboth. And it was quite awesome. We sat indoors and the windows were open so we had a beautiful view of the sun setting over the Bay. Our server was quick to get waters out and explain the dishes since our party of five was full of questions. As a group we ordered from the three main dish categories: seafood, meat, and poultry. Each of the dishes were very well liked by all. The food took a little bit to get out, but I think it was because we caught them in between shifts. Regardless, the view and conversation was so pleasant that we didn't even notice. I had their Loco Moco (Hawaiian dish) and it was delightful. A mountain of perfectly cooked white rice, topped with two over-medium fried eggs, two hamburger style patties (tho they could have been cooked longer) all drizzled with a Hawaiian sauce. DELIGHTFUL. The rice blended with the tangy sauce, the savory eggs, and the salty meat so well that I ate every bite. I can definitely see us returning to this locale, which if you plan accordingly and take advantage of their specials, you can't be the price/value ratio!

Great spot for drinks and such in fun Dewey! I have been going here since it opened and stopped in the other night for a round. I like the Hawaiian vibe and decor they have going. Next time I am in town I will have dinner there.

Their nachos are INCREDIBLE!! We added on the kahlua pork, and it was amazing. The portion size is huge. I wish we would've known how large it was going to be because then we wouldn't have ordered so much food.

Exceeded our expectations as a strip restaurant in Dewey. Quality of ingredients seemed very high, poke was fresh & authentic ... Spring rolls were clearly housemade ... Kalua pork taco was juicy & outstanding in flavor. Also had classic baja Mahi taco which was also wonderful. Both had juice dripping down my arm which is a good thing if ya ask me. Will definitely be back! Daily specials are awesome & a great deal! Husband loved the "shorts". You'll see...

Worst dining experience - and I am a very laid back, easy going type of diner! Went for brunch and the service was AWFUL. We were there for 2 hours watching everyone around us get their food. When I asked for ginger ale, I got an awful mixture of coke and sprite. When I asked for water, me and my 2 friends swore it was from a toilet - tasted AWFUL! Orders came out all wrong and the "tall" stack of pancakes was laughable. 2 unevenly sized flat pancakes. Me and a friend split the soft shell crab benedict which was actually decent although lacked any sign of Hollandaise as advertised. Oh, and the cherry on top? Me and a friend who paid by credit card were charged random amounts multiple times that we now need to dispute. Avoid!

I had breakfast here this morning and it was awful. The place wasn't even crowded and the service was so so slow..it took forever to get our drinks and for the waitress to take our order. When my bloody mary finally arrived it didn't have any garnish and tasted bland and gross. My omelet was also tasteless. The women's bathroom is disgusting, too. Breakfast from wawa would have been better.

The look, view and vibe all create a laid-back, island ambiance. The service was fast and super friendly. I ordered the tuna poke and shrimp quesadilla, both of which were very tasty. If you have never had poke, Nalu is the place to try it. The tuna was incredibly fresh and the seaweed salad was perfectly dressed (I think it is the best seaweed salad I've ever had). Definitely a Dewey do.

Note to the Fellas: I'm not Jennifer Lopez but after a few days in Dewey I was starting to feel hot...not even hot...HAUTE...movie star material! A trip to Nalu's put me back in my caste system because this is where the beautiful people of the beach hang out/work. Food: My friends and I ended up ordering the crab dip, coconut shrimp, and nacho appetizers to share. Everything was really tasty (but not very Hawaiian) but the portions were humongous! The nachos were more than enough to feed three starving girls. Drinks: They have a good selection of girly mixed drinks and wine. Our favorite was the back scratcher which tasted like a pineapple gift from heaven. It even came with a real bamboo back scratcher. I am a sucker for tchotkes like this. Scene: We stopped by on a Saturday night where they had a live band who covered everything from Enrique Iglesias' "Baby I like it" to Lynard Skynards "Sweet Home Alabama". The crowd was bopping. Lurved it!

Stopped here for dinner on my first rainy night in Dewey. It's about two blocks from the house. I shared a house salad which was huge. And then I had a fried mahi mahi taco and a grilled flounder taco. The grilled fish was ok, but the mahi mahi taco was awesome. I can't remember the last time a fish taco that good. I don't usually like the fried fish variety, but the fish was very light, the cabbage was fresh, and the sauce had some nice bite to it. I declared that I wanted to eat fish tacos every day. I don't think that will happen, but hopefully will make it back before I leave. My mom had a burger with spam on it, and that was pretty good too.

Came here for a weekend over the summer and had a great time. It was a bit dead inside so the dance area was pretty empty. But the bartender was awesome and the drinks were really good. We thought it was funny b/c our tab was labeled as "2 Girls". Anyhow thought the patrons were pretty friendly too. Didn't get to try the food but would definitely come back and give it another go.

We were really excited to try Nalu because my friend is from Hawaii and given their Hawaiian menu, we thought this would be fun. The drinks were really tasty and the service was above par, which is hard to find these days. We had the nacho appetizer and we all ate too much of it, but it was good and prepared exactly as we requested. My only complaint is that we paid extra for the chicken on the nachos and there was probably like 1/4 of a chicken breast in the nachos. I'm a super picky eater, so I went with the Huli Huli chicken upon recommendation from my friend and it was actually really good. The fried rice was different than what I'm used to, but also was pretty good. The only oddity about this place was that pretty much everything was a plus-up. Our server was really clear about how much all the extras were (which was appreciated because it is better than being blind sided), but management should consider not being so anal about the pricing because it is kind of annoying and clearly something that they have had issues with since our server was sure to mention everything.

Went with my family on the way back from the outlets. I ordered the Ahi tuna poke for an appetizer and it was not what I expected. It looked like someone had randomly butchered the tuna. I am used to outback steakhouse appetizer and this was not even close to it. It also didn't have any sauce on it which it needed. It had no flavor what so ever. $14.99 but the manager came and talked to me and ended up taking it off the bill. My wife had the crabcake sandwich which was delicious! My daughter had a Salmon sandwich also delicious. My other daughter had a cheeseburger which she liked. I ate the Kalbi Korean BBQ style short rib entrée which was over priced at $22 for 3 ribs. I thought it tasted like teriyaki sauce. The side salad was lettuce and tomato in a sauce bowl. Not worth it. I gave it 3 stars for good atmosphere and because my family liked their food. I wouldn't go back but if I had to I would not get what I ordered.

Semi-disappointed in the experience at Nalu. My partner and I went in for a late lunch, and while I enjoyed the grilled salmon sandwich I ordered, she had a different experience. My partner decided to order the pulled chicken tacos--a great deal at $5.99, served with chips and salsa--when the waitress came to the table, she asked how many Jenn would like to order, to which she answered three, because that is the typical number tacos at other restaurants come in. The food came and her tacos were just "meh"; they were simply chicken in soft shells with an odd semi-sweet coleslaw on top, which Jenn ended up scrapping off. The entire turning point of this review comes when we received the bill-Jenn was charged for each taco she ordered, $5.99 for each boring chicken taco, costing $18 for her entire meal. $18 for tacos is outrageous, considering they were rather plain and boring, and the chicken tacos on the menu cost the same as the mahi-mahi and shrimp tacos. Had the waitress informed us in the beginning that she would be charged for each individual taco, my partner would have ordered something different off the menu.

This place has great potential, however they're food doesn't measure up. The pork sliders, aged for over 12 hours, tasted burnt and dry. The tuna and Mahi tacos could have been awesome, but were drenched in hot sauce making them virtually inedible. I hope some changes are made, could be a great place.

This is a decent, clean restaurant. We went early on a Wednesdeay (about 6pm). Note - another reviewer said parking was free at this time, but we came out to tickets on our windows. There were six of us, two children, and this is our first visit. We found it to be a light and airy place, and had a variety of people of all ages dining here. Like others, we were perplexed at the decidedly American fare, given the advertised theme, but it all worked out. Two of us had the crab cakes, and they were filling and delicious. It came with two sauces - one a teriyaki, the other a spicy mayo based sauce. The teriyaki was very salty, but the other sauce was excellent. The kids had chicken fingers and grilled cheese. That was a primo grilled cheese, too. French fries looked average. We had some of the mixed drinks and they were quite tasty, though I think mine had less alcohol than I anticipated, and I left with a coconut souvenir - the container for my drink. The passion fruit cheesecake was delish, and the triple chocolate cake looked amazing. The server was attentive, friendly, and helpful. We enjoyed the meals and liked the theme - especially the tiki torches out front. Like many places in a resort town, it wasn't cheap - drinks averaged $10, crab cakes were $24.

We came in for lunch the sunday before preakness in the off-season. We started with the Ahi Tuna Poke. There was too much of what seemed to be full-sodium soy, the grade of ahi and the preparation was so low-caliber I was finding untrimmed pieces of belly. Poke is supposed to be like a tuna salsa-sweet, spicy, salty, and sour. Smaller chunks (1/2" cube, not 1.5" with belly) are needed, a higher grade tuna, along with some jalapeño or other spicy flavor to take this appetizer from bush league to big league. I asked for the mahi sandwich lightly blackened as a wrap , but was informed all mahi had already been breaded for the day. Not being able to accept an order at the beach for an UNBREADED piece of fresh fish knocks your place down a peg in my mind. You're supposed to be on the higher end of Dewey fare. There was no one in the restaurant at the time and there is no reason for not accommodating. Lastly, I asked for slaw on the wrap, and either server or kitchen totally missed it. My understanding is the chef is overseeing two kitchens while they open their whiskey beach, so that might be why the quality is suffering. Regardless, if I had ten minutes in the kitchen with these guys I'd show them how to tighten these things up. Luckily, many of the people they feed are half in the bag and wouldn't know good food if it hit them on the head. Let's hope they read their yelp reviews and are looking to make improvements, because this is one of the best concepts at the beach, and obviously successful. We can't wait for them to get through their growing pains and back to where every dish that leaves the kitchen matters. Our server was AWESOME, attentive, and happy. I'd recommend this place-they just have to tighten some things up-you'll find me here every time I'm in town. Make sure you give them feedback if something is off-they cannot fix a problem unless they know it exists.

Wait staff very nice. Food average. Got the recommended Hawaiian dish that tasted bland. Nice location but parking limited. May be a better "bar hangout" in evening than restaurant.

We go to Nalu fairly regularly. I'll start with what I like about it. I like the "open" atmosphere. The dark/dankness atmosphere of some of the other places at the beach is starting to get to me in my old age. It's very convenient for us as it sits right across the street from our condo. I love that they are one of the few places in Dewey that actually does happy hour, on weekends too!! And the nachos...GEEZ!! The one and only time we ever completely cleaned a plate of them there were 5 of us, and the guys did most of the eating. The cobb salad is huge and there is plenty to share. And my hubby really likes their wings. What I don't like...often our nachos are not as we ordered. Once they came with pork when we ordered shrimp, they just took the pork off, and put shrimp on, but of course there was no way to remove all of the pork. They keep changing up the menu, and I was sad to see that the shimp salad club that I loved is gone. The owner has said that they can still make it. I have yet to test him on that though. I have yet to check out this year's menu, other than an order of nachos. So I will update this review when I do.

Had lunch here today with a friend. The atmosphere is great & the weather was wonderful. I had the drunken pad thai noodles with shrimp. I was disappointed to only get four shrimp but whatever. Overall an ok experience. I wish I had read the reviews first, I would have tried the tacos! :)

We had a great time at Nalu on our last trip to the shore. The hawaiian-inspired atmosphere and food was a nice treat. The food was not overpriced in my opinion. The server was pretty good, friendly and attentive. However, I saw our server cleaning off a table next to us and could not have been more disgusted. She barely wiped down the table, she completely missed spots where I could clearly see food crumbs etc. Nor did she clean the area around where the salt and pepper sit and that itself is messy due to the pepper and salt themselves. I expect more attention be paid to cleaning where people are going to eat. Since I can't speak for the rest of the wait staff, I am still giving a good review (food and atmosphere were great), I just hope most servers/bussers take more time to clean.

Best. Nachos. Ever. Not a soggy chip in sight. Layered cheese so every chip had some, even the ones underneath. Jalapeños have kick but aren't super spicy. Shredded pork is moist and juicy. I'm actually eating as I'm writing this. I couldn't wait. I highly approve of Nalu.

Strolled in at 10 pm for a late night bite on Thursday and was impressed with the service food and drinks! We had the nachos and wings which were great! The Nachos were stacked a mile high beyond the limit and it was finger licking good!!! My son got the plain wings which were the best tasting wings according to him! We order the nulu pineapple beer and the orange crush both local drinks both were on point! Going back for happy hour and try the frozen drinks!!! The service was quick and reliable !!

My girlfriend and I really love it here and make it a point to visit whenever we can. Every time we are in the area we drop by for lunch or the delicious happy hour specials that they have. We love the design of the bar -the ambience is really chill and laid back. Definitely a surfer bar/island style place. Our server, Karie, did a really great job taking care of us too. The tacos are phenomenal and the salads are fresh and really delicious. If you're in the mood for a burger with a little kick, they offer a ghost pepper cheese that is really just fantastic and spicy! The crab dip is pretty tasty also and comes with lots of crab and not a lot of fillers. Overall, it's a great place to grab a drink or a bite to eat. I strongly recommend giving them a try.

Hands down the best restaurant on Dewey Beach. Loved it so much that in one weekend we went back three separate times and on the last one ordered some wasabi fried rice to go just to eat it at home after our beach trip. I'm not sure what kind of voodoo they concoct to make the wasabi fried rice as magically delicious as it is, I just know I want to live inside of a bucket of its buttery goodness. Also, Nalu is one of those rare Hawaiian-themed restaurants that ACTUALLY serves Hawaiian food, with loco moco and poke and spam. We loved everything we ate and drank here and will definitely be back on our next beach trip.

We were looking for a place where my boyfriend could watch the game and we could have a halfway decent meal for dinner in Dewey. Lighthouse was dead so we saw the tiki torches of Nalu and the game on their wide screen above the bar so we decided to head inside. It's very Hawaiian-chic, with a lot of island influences, tiki torches and large tropical drinks. We were looking to eat light, so I ordered the Hawaiian salad add grilled chicken and my boyfriend ordered the chicken & pulled pork tacos. We didn't have high hopes about the food and figured it would be standard bar food but we were actually pleasantly surprised with the quality of our meal. Salad was fresh and abundant with coconut, pineapple and plantains and my bf's tacos were excellent, especially the pork. Our vodka sodas were strong and service was friendly. I noticed a lot of painted art on the wall as well, adding to the whimsical island vibe . This is a great spot for young adults looking for a quality meal while still getting the laid-back, neighborhood bar feel.

Our first stop after the 3 hour car ride from VA to Dewey was here for lunch and both my tummy and wallet were happy with this decision. 4 of my gf's and I split the kalua nachos and will probably be raving about them for quite some time. I ordered the blackened mahi and made it a wrap instead of a sandwich (LOVE this option!) and it was fantastic! My gf ordered the spam sandwich and said it took her back to growing up in Hawaii! Everyone was very happy with their food and the drink menu (that has a little of everything!). Our server was attentive and the vibe was right. I will definitely be back the next time I visit Dewey and maybe this time I will get to stay and check out the night life. The place looked pretty bumpin when we walked by on our way to another bar.

We came here for lunch after a day on the beach. Hostess was great. Waitress was ok. She really was nice only....you know that professional nice that has a touch of disingenuousness? Anyway we had the Cesar salad (which tasted like heaven after a long morning on the beach) and the crab nachos and two orders of shrimp quesadillas. Crab nachos were massive and really good. Crab was plain. Someone needs to bring all these Delaware restaurants some Old Bay! Quesadillas were excellent and flavorful! Clean bathrooms. Fun atmosphere.

We were searching for a place that would be great food, family friendly, and a large variety for everyone who wanted something new and exciting. Nalu was the perfect place. It's the weekend after Labor Day and we expected a possible wait. Nope got a beautiful table right at 7 no wait perfect breeze/sunset. The staff was friendly and attentive. But the food omg the food. If you don't get the pork spring rolls you are failing at life! We all got something different peppercorn tuna, kalua pulled pork, Ono sandwich, wagyu filet mignon, chicken tenders (kiddos), sweet potato salad, mac salad, wasabi fried rice, French fries. Everything and I mean everything was delicious and cook perfectly. Not one thing tasted bad or even just ok. Plus great beers on tap. I have been to Hawaii and this place really took me back. Try it you will find something you like.

We visit Hawaii almost yearly, so we know Hawaiian food. Nalu has a good representation of the local foods. Love how healthy you can eat here, & it is all still delicious! I brought my daughter's here on a Saturday evening at 8:00, which I will never do again! Too loud & too many drunk/obnoxious patrons. I have learned my lesson, it is a family restaurant during lunchtime.

Great atmosphere, good food and cocktails! My wife and I went here for lunch and were impressed. The prices were good for a tourist town and the quantity and quality of the food exceeded expectations. Food: 4 - Had the burger with spam on it. Burger cooked properly but could have used a little more seasoning. The spam, pineapple, and other toppings worked well. The house made fries were excellent! - My wife had the Hawaiian salad - vegetarian. Really good salad, little pricey with no meat but that is normal in this town. Came with macadamia nuts, pineapple, passion fruit and other goodies. The passion fruit was flavorless but outside of that the toppings and the house dressing was really good. Drinks: 5 We had the pineapple crush which was the best of the "crushes" we had in Dewey beach. I also had the "house" brew which was a pineapple beer. Good initial taste but drink it before it loses any coldness. Gets weak pretty quick. Overall, I will def go back to Nalu when I am in Dewey. Service was very good and the food made me wish I was in Hawaii even more!

The atmosphere and restaurant is nicely decorated it's tiki Hawaiian feel. The service sucks. The food looks good, but isn't great and is a huge rip off! Also, granted my fault, be sure to actually read the description. I got the Spam BLT thinking I was getting a spam sandwich but instead had no spam and just bacon. I didn't even eat half of it. The Serrano peppers were decent. The tuna tartare was bland and overloaded with sesame oil so it's like eating chunks of sesame oil. The sushi was so tiny and had zero flavor. It was like eating cardboard mush. My pina colada may as well be a virgin bc a you tasted was the piña colada syrup. I would never come back here or recommend this place. But if you was a low key night then this place has good atmosphere and nothing more to offer.

It's not Hawaii but it gives you a taste of Hawaii with east coast style. We came back a couple of times while in Dewey. Our dinners were tasty. The Hawaiian plate entree "plate lunch" with kalbi (Korean BBQ ribs), mac salad and sticky rice was surprisingly good...great flavors and the kalbi was marinated nicely. The SPAM and pineapple topped burger was good though not what the hubby quite expected. We returned for breakfast one morning and were surprised by the Bloody Mary. It was really good! Overall, tasty place with a Hawaiian twist on bar food.

Lively place for drinks or dinner. There was a 20 minute wait but thankfully our friend arrived first and was being seated when we pulled in. Warning you need to feed parking lot meters until 2 am. Quarter = 10 mins. Attentive staff delivered drinks and beers plus offered a sample of a new beer which was helpful bc it saved me from a mistake. Loved the Kona brews instead and the nachos to start. Kids got fish stix (more like planks) and fries or fruit. Our little one was thrilled because they had chocolate milk!! My husband had loco moco burger which was actually 2 burgers, each plated on "bun" of rice and topped with runny fried egg. One egg was a little undercooked. Please offer a half loco! My pink snapper with macadamia nut and cilantro topping was unique but needed salt. Wasabi fried rice had nice flavor but I was expecting spicier. Overall a fun place with nice drink and beer options and inventive seafood menu with tex mex twist. 3.5 stars. Dewey can get crazy. This restaurant had a nice family feel.

Had a great dinner! The seafood chowder, crab dip and coconut shrimp are great, as are the cocktails (try the mai tai or ice tea!) friendly staff and killer sunsets! The wait was a bit longer than expected, but they text you when table is ready, and to pass the time, the vintage surf films make it not so bad.

Tough to find a family friendly place at the beach with great food for reasonable prices. We had a great time here. Some standouts were nachos, the Ono burger, and crab cake sandwich which was all crab. Service was brisk and friendly. The Ono in particular is crazy and has to be seen to be believed.

Service is great, food is decent, and the drinks are delicious (made with fresh fruit juices)! We came here for 3 meals during our 4 day stay and the food was consistently good. Chelsea, the bartender, is friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed our meals here.

  • Susan J.

So we came here because our first choice had an hr and a half to 2 hour wait. We could not do that with 2 small children under 4. The place seemed good from yelp, but I think it was slightly over-rated. The menu looked tasty alright, but when we got our entrees, the meals seem a tad overpriced. I had the kona braised beef short rib for $20 with 2 sides. Honestly, the beef was fatty tender goodness. But the sweet potato salad side was a forgettable mess of cubed sweet potato, apples and craisins. Not much better was the Wasabi rice. What were other reviewers raving about the sauce? It was merely sticky rice with a smidgen of scrambled eggs and 3 edamames. My kid could eat the rice since it was flavorless. So, meat was great, but sides need improving. And service? Agreed with totally lacking. Other than taking your order, she was somewhere else. Will I venture here again? Meh...

It's clean, and I'll allow the fact that cleanliness was the first thing I mentioned in this review to speak for itself. The problem with the food, honestly, is that there's a lack of balance. Pickles diced in salsa, spam and burger served together on a croissant in a squishy, unpleasant trinity of fat, panko breaded shrimp fried rock hard... It just wasn't very good. And I wanted it to be, nay I need it to be. Were it in the super-cheap range where food of this caliber usually appears, I'd be all in on this orgy of mistakes. But priced where it is--$40 for 2 people at lunch--it's just not worth it.

Meh- and it's been like that since it's opened.I haven't eaten here since it opened up over 4 years ago and I now remember why. It's way over priced even for Dewey and the food is sub par . Wanted to do HH the bar was crowded so we grabbed a table. I felt bad that we only ordered apps and has to take a table away from the server but I was starving and they usually have pretty good drink specials. So almost every bar in dewey let's you do drink specials at the table... Well every place but nalu. Strike one! Ordered crab dip - barely any crab , more cheese that anything else and if your gonna charge 12 for a small bowl of dip I should be able to see and taste the crab. CB got wings and said they were just ok. As the nite progressed more families with screaming children arrived( I like to avoid this, which is why we wanted bar seats) The only thing that saved this meal was our sever she was great, friendly and fast. My glass was never empty and she checked back quite a few times . Never again. I don't think any of the food they serve fits with the theme . What's Hawaiian about Cobb salads and burgers

Me and my friends overall experience was solid. So much so that we came back the following night for dinner and I will be sure to visit it when I return to Dewey Beach. This is a very Tiki themed restaurant and not very Hawaiian when you get down to it (Cajun Chicken and Shrimp Pasta anyone?) But the service was good. I guess most restaurant's need a hook so Hawaiian is as good as any, insert Spam on Menu and voila. The Ahi Poke was delicous. It is basically Sushi quality Tuna with a slight marinade. My friend heard from his brother that this was something we should try and I was suprised how tasty it was. I have gone to many restaurants that serve Poke and it's because of Nalu and theirs is some of the best. The tacos were good nothing spectacular with the Kalua Pork being the one I would recommend. If the Poke was the highlight then the WIPE-OUT (bucket drink meant for sharing) was not far behind. It tasted good as most foo foo drinks do and it gave us te perfect Buzz to begin the night. It's not cheap but divide the price among 4 people and it's reasonable, plus who doesn't like sharing. I would give Nalu 3.5 stars if it was an option.

The best way to describe this place would be to imagine if Hooters suddenly went Hawaiian. It had a surfy tiki bar vibe. The food was pretty good - a lot of the standard bar fare with some unique touches. This included (shutter to think, but wouldn't be Hawaiian without it) some items made with Spam. We did not partake, but if you ever have a Spam hankering, now you know. My husband had a burger, which was decent. I had a blackened mahi mahi sandwich. It was really good and really filling. I'd eat here again.

My boyfriend and I decided to try Nalu for the first time after hearing good things about it from people on the beach in Dewey. Horrible mistake. We started with nachos and I will say that is was a VERY generous serving of "nachos". It's too bad they weren't up to par. I'll admit that I am somewhat of a nacho snob, but I think that if you are going to offer something like that on your menu, you need to master the art of layering. It's not that difficult to add a little cheese and toppings here and there as you're piling on an entire bag of chips. I would have forgiven the rookie nacho mistake if the main course was a home run. Surprisingly enough (or not) it was absolutely the worst thing I've ever been served in a restaurant, period. I broke my own rule, which is to never order dishes of a cuisine that the restaurant doesn't specialize in. We ordered the drunken noodles. The only thing "drunk" about these noodles might have been the chef who prepared them. The dish bore absolutely NO resemblance to the Thai dish I love so much. The noodles were overcooked and swimming in a tangy sauce with large cuts of barely cooked vegetables. We took one bite and booked it out of there. We couldn't even choke it down later after a long night at North Beach. $15 in the trash...

Nalu is just a great place. Great food, awesome drinks and entertainment. We go there every time we're in Dewey. Staff is great, friendly and their musical entertainment is top notch. If it's BBQ you're after, by all means, visit their sister restaurant next door. Whiskey Beach! YUM! Cornbread, fried chicken and every variety of BBQ meats and sauces anyone could ever desire. Even their fries are better than average.

Never been there before until a group of 12 of us met there 2012/2013 New Year's eve. Everyone (who didn't know) told me we were crazy to go there - that there would be nothing but drunken kids, bad food and worse service. They couldn't have been more wrong. Our group is aged 40-65, and found the other patrons - 21 year olds to older than us - to be a fabulous fun crowd. The band was great, named 51 Pick-up(??) Can't remember their name but they played old and new tunes. They got everyone up singing and dancing. The DJ played the club-type music which us older folk didn't appreciate so much, but that was only inbetween the band sets. Service was top notch - bar servers friendly and efficient, serving up top shelf drinks, and the food - I hear - was great. I tasted some stuff but I couldn't tell you what it was, only that it was mostly spicy and very tasty, and plentiful. They also had desserts served which looked delicious, and everyone said they were. There was enough table and bar seating for everyone too. Wow! What a great choice for NY Eve. The package was, I think, $219 for a couple (2) which included EVERYTHING including a night at the Sandcastle Motel in Rehoboth. (meh..3 stars) and also included a shuttle back to the hotel. I'm anxious to try Nalu again - just for the bar/restaurant in or off season. Good job, Nalu.

I've been a Yelp member for years...using it only to read reviews, but never actually wrote a review. Anyway, I liked Nalu so much I felt I needed to add a review. I loved everything about this place - from the open air feeling, to the food. We went for dinner....there were 10 of us....I had the crab cakes and thoroughly enjoyed them. So often I get crab cakes with a ton of filler, so I was a bit leery...anyway, they were fresh, well made and tasted outstanding. My husband had the tacos and hasn't stopped talking about them....he said they were fresh and light. I found Nalu to be reasonably priced with excellent food...needless to say, we'd definitely stop by again next time we're in the area.

I liked Nalu. I have never been to Hawaii, so I can not relate the EXACT authenticity of the food, but like a previous Yelper stated, I am pretty sure Cajun Chicken pasta ain't authentic. Not an issue, because I would never order Cajun Chicken pasta in a Hawaiian joint to begin with. I stayed authentic and ordered tacos. Confused? Yeah, I kind of am too. In fact I wasn't just confused when I went to Nalu twice over the weekend, I was crippled by a hangover of the likes I haven't experienced since I woke up after a family friend's wedding years ago, and had to count on two hands the people I had pissed off the night before. Stupid Dewey Beach. Stupid Idiot Friends. Stupid Rudder. Stupid beer. Stupid 151. Where am I going with this? Well, Nalu brought me back from the dead. My first trip here I was so far gone that when my buddy and I sat at the bar, I glanced over at a mixed drink machine, and almost had to walk out. This thing contained some sort of half frozen mudslide-like concoction which was kept from freezing solid by a rotating metal arm which sloshed the brown contents around. And around. And around. Things in my stomach began to slosh. I had to avert my eyes, and tell myself to get it together, man. And I did. I made the brilliant decision to order Coconut shrimp. That was a pivotal moment. Things could have gone down a very ugly path indeed. Seafood is not the ideal choice of the hungover. I mean, who wants to power through something like sushi as their stomach is churning like that machine. Normally, not me, but if something is fried, well, that MIGHT just get you through. Thankfully, the shrimp were perfectly fried with just the right amount of coconut in the batter. Also, the dipping sauce was sweet and sour, and worked perfectly. Home-slice next to me ordered the pork tacos, and gave me a bite. That pulled pork spoke to me. Hints of pineapple, maybe a little ginger, some sweetness from brown sugar. Oh, I was back. Ready to battle rap any sucker that got in my path. Ready to deal with my Idiot friends. Ready to take on the Starboard (please feel free to read my review). On my return visit to Nalu the following day, I was in much better shape, and had to have one of those pork tacos, and also had to try the traditional San Diego style fish taco. Both were outstanding, and were half price to boot. I believe Mondays are half price taco day. Anyway, the fish taco was killer. Perfectly fried fish (I believe it was cod) served with red cabbage, and a great creamy sauce all wrapped in a "crisped on the flat top" flour tortilla. I haven't had a fish taco that good since I was last in Cali. The pulled pork taco this time around was massive. I would have been happy with half the amount of meat that was served. Both tacos were served with chips and a killer pico de gallo that had surprising heat that either came from fresh jalapeno or serrano peppers. Service on both visits was attentive, but we were only one of a few tables in the restaurant at the time. The many signs on the walls were advertising numerous happy hour, and daily drink specials, so I am sure this place get hopping at night. I will definitely return, and am thinking Nalu would make a great pit stop on visits to and from Delaware's more southern beaches.

From the outside Nalu appears to be a really cool Hawaiian beach bar. The decor is tropical and open, bamboo is everywhere and you see surfboards on the walls and lei-clad waitstaff. The bar has a little tiki hut feel and you see a plethora of colored straws and frozen drink accessories. It seems that they focus more on the fruity drinks and dancing crowd, because as a restaurant it's very mediocre. The place was completely dead at 5pm and despite a horde of waitstaff sitting around, service was still pretty bad. It took a while to get our order in, and it was impossible to find our waitress at any point after that so we could add an item to the order. It also took what felt like an eternity to finally get the food. Once food came, it was presented well, but quality wasn't very good. I had the creole chicken pasta which was slathered and covered in a heavy, salty, flavorless "cajun sauce". It was a lot of food, but very heavy and definitely pretty crappy considering it cost $18, which is the cheapest entree available. My dining companion seemed to enjoy her teriyaki chicken sandwich, but it appeared to just be a grilled chicken breast with some corn syrupy generic asian sauce on it. The fries were especially terrible. A pretty disappointing experience, considering how great the place looks and how somewhat unique the menu is. There aren't a whole lot of actual hawaiian dishes but there are a few, like the Spam BLT, that are fairly close to being something hawaiian. One cool thing is that one of their frozen drinks is The Backscratcher, and it actually comes with a bamboo backscratcher.

I highly recommend the Kona Braised Short Rib tacos. One day (Monday I think) is half price tacos. Five of us ate and drank for $56.

This review is for the food/restaurant, which could easily be upped to 4 stars with a little attention to detail. First off, the habanero mango hot wings were excellent and would have warranted 5 stars if that's all we had. From there it was down hill. Ahi poke was heavy handed... The ingredients were cut too big which didn't allow proper incorporation of flavors and the avocado was not ripened at all. The mains were delivered 2 minutes after our starters were delivered. We ordered 5 tacos (2 Baja and 3 Korean ribeye)... All were soggy from being wrapped in tin foil and loaded with cole slaw, so the flavor really lacked. The drink specials were small and tasted gross. Waitress was nice, but had no clue. In addition to the above, our waters sat empty, chips were delivered without salsa, and empty appetizer played sat on our table for the full service. This place definitely has potential and I've enjoyed having day drinks here, but don't go here expecting anything more than bar food and bar service.

I tried to make reservations for a large group coming into town. The hostess *almost* hung up on me, stating "a lot of people just came in. I have to go." I asked for a manager, and was told that I would get a phone response that evening. Needless to say, they never called me. I did receive a response to my email inquiry (days later), only after mentioning over the phone that I hadn't received a response. They didn't allow me to make a reservation, seemed very dismissive, and rude. I asked if we could do a set menu for the large party, and was denied, even though I was referred by a friend who was able to do this last summer. We will be taking our large dinner and drinks tab elsewhere where it is appreciated. UPDATE: The owner saw this review and decided to write me an unpleasant "follow-up" email. The conclusion remains the same - this business does not seem to place a high emphasis on accommodating their admitted repeat customer base - large parties like ours coming into town to have a good time. My group was dismissed as fungible, i.e., they don't take reservations because they have been burned too much in the past by drunken cancellations. Avoid if you are planning a large party and need reassurance ahead of time that you will be accommodated and not dismissed as just another drunken group.
