What an cute little cafe! We stumbled upon it, starving and desperate for breakfast. My fiancé had the "Fran Slam" and I had the "Hillbilly Breakfast". Both were delicious and we both ended up stuffed! Everything, from the syrup to the jam, the pancake batter and biscuits are homemade! The staff was sweet as can be; reminded me of good ol' southern hospitality!

I love this place, everything is made from scratch and are family recipes. Step inside and relax and slow down while you enjoy excellent food, good service and friendly people. The walls are covered with 50's memorabilia from record sleeves to articles from around Wheat Ridge from the same era. Be sure to bring some cash because its Cash Only(just like the fifties) but, that's what keeps the prices low. Some of my favorites include Malted French Toast, Green Chili, Fruit Preserves, Rhubarb/Banana Breads and Choco Mayo Cake.

We love this funky, family owned breakfast joint! The daily breakfast specials are always over-the-top delicious, and their homemade bread is awesome. The blueberry bacon maple muffin is a religious experience.

Home cooking just as advertised! If you want honest home cooked food in a subtle 50's setting, go here! Blueberry waffle special: perfect homemade blueberry topping just sweet enough, but not too sweet. Huevos Rancheros: Refried beans are very tasty. Green chile also very good with a decent kick. Breakfast burrito: Very tasty! melted cheese on the grilled tortilla, with the aforementioned beans and green chile. Get it with bacon for an extremely reasonable $6.99! I would take 1/2 a star away, for what's left of the previous tenants decor. They did clean it up nicely, but I hope they continue to do some updating when they become successful (which is sure to happen). C'mon Wheat Ridge!

Thank you Yelp reviewers for leading me to Fran's! I feel like I owe you more thanks than I can possibly give. After reading so many great reviews, I decided my brother and I needed to try Fran's this morning. We live in a weird part of town that is mostly chain restaurants, but lately I've noticed the stretch of 38th just east of Wadsworth seems worth exploring. We both love breakfast, and we usually end up going to Denny's because it's close or our old standby Carnation. I think Fran's has us from now on. First of all, the ladies who work here are adorable and I love them. My brother and I were the only people in there at around 9 on a Wednesday morning, but the waitress told us they are usually packed around 7 am. The place is TINY and charming. It's definitely a dive, but I love places like that, so I immediately felt charmed. My brother loved it even more than I did, and I think he is the harder sell. The walls are decorated with old records and things, which we both enjoyed. The counter also looks like a great place to sit if you're alone. This place is far from new, and far from fancy, so I would suggest you steer clear if you're pretentious. Time to talk about the food. I ordered huevos rancheros because I feel like any Denver-area diner should be good at making the dish. They were good, but not my favorite. The green chile wasn't spicy enough for my taste, but it was good. The beans were delicious! They had so much flavor and I really enjoyed them. The potatoes were also really good. I like that style of breakfast potato, especially because it's clear someone chopped them by hand. I probably won't order this again, but it was good. My brother ordered the hillbilly and he loved it. I tried his gravy and I thought it was super yummy. It reminded me of the homemade sausage gravy my mom makes. He also said his eggs were cooked perfectly. I asked him about the link sausage, which is something we are both really picky about, and he said it was excellent. So, while my food wasn't my favorite, I loved this place. My coffee cup was never empty. The waitress was so sweet and I just felt comfortable at Fran's. Sometimes when you are the only patrons in a restaurant you can feel awkward but that wasn't the case at all. I want to try their lunch so much now! I am so glad we stopped in. :)

On my first trip to Fran's, I had one of the best customer service experiences i have ever had! Our waitress (and co-owner) introduced herself while we were looking over the menu. Family owned and operated is always a plus in my book. My husband had mentioned seeing a particular Mid Western dish as a special on a previous visit, but it was not on the regular menu. However, when i asked if they ever had that on the menu, the waitress called over her daughter (the chef) who had me describe the dish, and then immediately said, "i can make that for you!" I work in service, so i would never presume to request special substitutuons or accommodations unless absolutely necessary, like allergies. I was blown away that she would so kindly offer to make a completely special dish just for me! Not only that, but it was the BEST I have ever had, hands down. And, they did not charge an arm and a leg, it was simply priced the same as the special o'the day. Now, i absolutely do not encourage you to walk in here and make up your own special and expect these nice people to accommodate you, but please give them a try. The restaurant is charming and quaint, the friendly service can't be beat, and the food is delicious. What a find. I can't wait to go back.

Loved this place!! We never would have found this without yelp! Awesome family that we will definitely be back to support. Dated interior but food was delicious, and the service was great. We both thought that their chicken fried steak and gravy were the best we have had in a really long time!! And the BREAD!! Homemade and incredible!!!! You can order 24 hours ahead and take some home, we will definitely be back for the food and the bread!!! So glad there was a long line at sunrise sunset or we may not have found this gem!!!

I've never been led astray by yelp. I walked in and the floors were sticky. The tables too. My omelette was pretty good, but I tried one of the fried eggs and I almost immediately threw up. I wanted them to add mushrooms to my omelette. They told me they didn't serve mushrooms. Yet their special of the day was fried mushrooms..? Very disappointing

I had the Larry yesterday and felt like I was served a plate of puke - it looked atrocious. It tasted even worse. The gravy was obviously from a box, the potatoes were cold and burnt, and the eggs were tasteless and cold. I watched my three companions get their food and it looked like plastic when it came out. My daughter broke into her over-easy eggs and found them to be cold and rubbery. The green chili looks like jalapeno jelly. The French toast is way under-battered (my daughter did like the syrup). My brother asked for a side of crispy bacon and it came out black because it was so burnt. Cooking with some better ingredients would go a long way towards making the food better. The cook needs to get a clue. The service is ok. I honestly can't understand all the 5 star reviews. We went there based on the Yelp reviews, and I couldn't have been more disappointed. Is this supposed to be a bar food joint?

I love the 50's style atmosphere! I stop for breakfast before work - pancakes and bacon are great! I've been in for lunch once and had a good BLT, but come back for breakfast!

The hubs and I really enjoy a good diner. He often orders something with gravy and I almost always go for huevos rancheros. Today was no exception. We both loved the throwback in time. The music was straight out of the 50's, the menus were old advertisements and the decor was comfortable without trying too hard. The green chili was spicy and went really well with the eggs and potatoes. The tortilla was the only disappointment as it wasn't a fresh one. The refried beans were delicious. The hubs liked his peppery white gravy and soaked everything up with the homemade white bread. We also shared the apple rings which tasted like funnel cake batter around Apple slices. They were rolled in sugar and were delicious in an oh so wrong for you way. The waitress was very nice and attentive and the food arrived quickly.l

Wish I could give it a better rating but it just was so so for us. Being on a no carb diet one of us ordered an egg white omelette without potatoes or toast. She did not enjoy it and it looked rubbery to me sitting on her plate. I had an egg sandwich and it was okay. It's a nice little place but the rubber look on the eggs was a turn off so we probably will not return.

Stopped in to this quaint little breakfast café to have breakfast. Really enjoyed the nostalgia all over the walls. Elvis playing in the background I enjoyed a spinach, swiss, onion & ham omelette. The food was good service was good. Coffee cup never went dry.

On cold freezing Saturday morning, I decided to try Fran's cafe by 38th and wadsworth. The cafe looked stunning a blast from the past. My wife order eggs and hamburger patty with beans and side of green chile. I ordered Huevos rancheros and French toast. The experience was awkward for us, our order took some time. My wife says the beans were not homemade like it says on the menu. Weirdly it look like someone ran to the Safeway to get a can. ( I actually did see someone run somewhere ) Almost everything was burnt. (Pictures) Thus I give this cafe 2 1/2 stars. My wife vows not to come back. Sadly I won't be back. I would gladly order something else if they said no homemade beans. Or tortillas whatever they ran out. It is delicious here just not burnt food

After a few more stops in this little gem, I've come to love the food and the feel of the place. I've been welcomed by name on my third visit, so I reckon I'll be there as often as my clothing and wallet allow. The food is consistently perfect and the service is more delightful than just about any other breakfast joint I've been to. Kudos to the team at Fran's Cafe!

UPDATE: I TRIED THE HOMEMADE BREAD AND HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY ALMOND JAM THIS TIME! WONDERFUL! Great little restaurant. I've driven by a million times, tried to come once before (it was on a Tuesday, when they are closed). I'm glad I finally stopped in. I brought my 3 year old for breakfast and she was happy to receive a special sippy cup and crayons and a coloring book. I had Fran's slam, one large pancake, House made syrup, cottage fries, two eggs and bacon. My daughter had sausage links dipped in pancake batter. Everything was delicious and my over-medium eggs were perfect, most places don't get my eggs right. the lady who served us was a very lovely woman with a kind smile and great motherly/grandmotherly persona. I will be back again to try some of their interesting combinations like the fried ravioli sandwich

Always remember me and what I order! Coffee is brought right as I sit down and the friendly atmosphere is warm! delicious homemade bread and jam. New specials every day and earl bird breakfast is $1.99! Can't get that anywhere! Once you try this place you will always have it in your heart as "your breakfast joint".

the best pan cakes I ever had!!!! Todays special "blue berry banana pancakes with home made strawberry syrup".. The pancakes were big and filling, eggs and bacon were cooked just the way I liked them, and they also remembered I like coffee half water and half coffee. Great service. The food is like going home to mom's cooking. The cook is going to make some man very happy.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with Fran's but it's just not a stand out breakfast place. For starters, the space is not cozy or charming or cool. It looks dated and there is a lot of space between the tables and the booths... so I had to sit at the edge of my seat to reach my breakfast. The windowsill could have used a wipe-down, there were two flies that had met their maker who knows how long ago... It's not really about atmosphere, but about the food, so here we go. I got a basic breakfast dish with bacon, eggs and a pancake. I think it was ridiculously cheap at around $5. T he bacon was a tad undercooked for my liking (I suppose I could have ordered it well-done). My over-medium egg was brought out over-easy (not a big deal). The pancake was enormous, the size of a dinner plate! I was most excited to eat the pancake and slathered it with butter and syrup. I took a large bite and was immediately turned off by their "homemade" syrup. The syrup tasted as though they boiled sugar water to make a simple syrup, burned it, then added more water to thin it out. It was NOT my thing. The pancake itself was more chewy than fluffy. With two entrees and two coffees I think our bill was under $13, so it was definitely priced right. The friendly service and no wait on a Saturday morning definitely add to the appeal of trying Fran's again. I won't avoid this place, but I will avoid their syrup (can someone else try it and tell me if I'm crazy?). Maybe their other entrees are where it's at.

Can't get enough of the malt french toast! That with a side of bacon and they keep that cup filled with great brew coffee - best and friendliest place to start the day - it's like "coming home" when you walk in ! Luncheon specials change daily and besides being delicious, plentiful - very reasonable. It is home cookin' at its best - a little bit of love comes out on the plate to you.

No refill on coffee. My pancake was dry and heavy and burnt on one side. All of our meals were "OK" but just barely. Dingy decor. Small uninspired menu. 100 degrees in there. It has so much potential but overall mediocre food and slow service. I dont know who gave this place so many 5 stars but they may have gone to a different cafe than we did.

Best chicken fried steak I've had outside of Texas. Very affordable, realistic portions. Sausage gravy was AMAzING! I would give them 5 stars if they had more veggie sides. Fried okra? Southern style green beans? Come on Franny, I know you're good at making those, too!

Thank you yelpers! This place is a hidden gem and we are so glad we visited during our time in Colorado. All of the food was delicious and almost all homemade. Don't miss their homemade bread and jams. Make sure to check their hours as they close early.

Saw a board post on the sidewalk "come try the Larry's special rated the "worst food ever eaten by a customer" love it....had to find out. In a little, quaint cafe with a flair to a fifties theme, I knew it was home. BUT, not if the food was horrible. The first time, I tried the early bird special for 2.99. A good size egg to order, homemade home fires, bacon or sausage, homemade toast..they bake it there. homemade jam, not too sweet.......it was a wonderful treat. The price and coffee are amazing. The next time, I tried the green chili, YES YES.....then breakfast burritos, specials, gravy followed. I was firmly sold until... I HAD to try the chocolate mayo cake... Can it be the last thing I eat in life? Please? I ordered cakes for Dad's 80th fourth of July. He asked Fran to marry him LOL Please know, I did own and operate a successful bakery cafe, I know food, for the price, personality and taste.....you can NOT beat it.....The Harper crew

Had breakfast at Frans this morning because of the 4.5 star reviews. When we pulled up to the place I got a bit worried looked dumpy and pretty dead. We almost drove away based on the looks of the place. However sometimes hole in the walls are the best so we went in. The menu was weak but we ordered anyway. While waiting for our food I used the restroom. I was hoping the kitchen was cleaner ugh! When our food was brought I was a bit shocked. The smallest portions I have ever seen. My breakfast ham was not even an ounce of meat super small and almost all fat. Our hashbrowns were 2 tablespoons and one piece of toast. Hubby sausage was undercooked and the home made jelly was gross. The waitress was fine but everything else was horrible. We just got the check and left. Oh I asked for a side of green chili. It has to be spoiled I spit it out. Seriously the most disgusting meal ever!!!! We should have gone to Carnations.

Amazing food, great prices, homemade bread and jam. Sitting here with regulars, the server knows their names and what they are up to that day. Come before 9 for diner food for $2.99! We will be back! Our entire meal consisting of 'the hillbilly', orange juice, a 'before 9am' special, and hot tea - enough food to STUFF 2 ppl was $14.00. They have a vintage diner ambiance with an old tymey radio show playing in the background. Fran's has a family diner feel because it is a family diner. We will be going here for a long time.

Today was our second visit but not by choice. We'd have been here daily if the funds, time and my illness would allow it. Last time we had the meatloaf special and my boy had the Mexican burger. OH.MY. GEEZNESS. the meatloaf has this slight sweetness to it that's just delicious, yummy sauce, homemade fries, and potato salad. My son almost melted over his burger. I had to roll him out the door. We followed with a slice of strawberry cake that was sooooo moist and yummy, I wanted to make it my life partner. Today we had the Pork tenderloin Sammie with homemade fries, and my boy had the Chicken A La King special. He again had to be rolled out. My sammie was served on homemade white bread, hand breaded and deep fried. Pretty decent. But the Boston Cream Cake!?!?! I'm afraid my cake affair is goin to need to be polyamorous. Monogamy be damned. We have decided that we will need to come at least twice a month.

Delicious and unpretentious. The homemade sausage gravy was delightful and so was the fried, malted French toast. No wait on a Saturday is right up my alley, but the friendly service and comfy booths made this place all the more special. I went here with my wife this morning. I ordered the hillbilly while she has the breakfast burrito. We finished our meal with the blueberry muffin with maple and bacon. I thought the hillbilly was good. Biscuits and gravy topped with two eggs, two links of sausage, and a side of potatoes. The potatoes were really good! The breakfast burrito was okay. It doesn't come with any meat which was more of a negative in our opinions. We did get a side of bacon in its place - but without a chorizo or some other meat in the burrito, it was a lot of starch and carbs. The muffin was a nice sweet treat. The maple frosting really tasted great and added another dimension to the already tasty blueberry muffin. The topping of hard bacon was just ok. I think it may have been better without it. All in all, the experience was a 3. We may come back - but wouldn't be our first choice for breakfast in the future.

Had breakfast here this morning... And wow! Everything was homemade down to the banana jam. We're talking biscuits and gravy, all fresh and homemade, with potatoes and eggs. Asked our server (who was singing along with the 50s music playing) about the homemade jellies/jams and she brought us a piece of toast so that we could try them. Took a blueberry maple bacon muffin home for "dessert" and holy wow. Better than Voodoo doughnuts ever thought of being. This is what a real diner should be!

You know, sometimes you just want good ol' breakfast cafe cooking. Nothing fancy. Nothing pretentious. And, best of all, cheap. Way cheap. Went to Fran's this morning and had the "Fran Slam" (2 eggs, 2 sausage, breakfast potatoes, and toast) and some pretty decent coffee. The food was delicious. The service was attentive. And my check was $8.60 (without tip of course). Man, you can't go any cheaper than that for a good sit-down breakfast. I will definitely be back.

The food wasn't extraordinary, the coffee... not bad and it was plentiful, the service was good, the ambiance is what makes the experience better, feels pretty much like walking into a joint during the 50's or 60's. The prices are definitely NOT like anywhere in the 50's-90's though so the bang for the buck keeps it from being a 5-star joint for me. I am a fan though.

This place is a well kept secret! We went here for breakfast recently and were delighted to find such an amazing place. The service was prompt and friendly. The Chicken and Waffles are amazing, it's no wonder they sell out every time they make them! Their prices were very reasonable. For all of these reasons we will be going back.

Home cookin' at its best! Nothing fancy, just super delicious food. Get the breakfast burrito and the waffle with fruit topping... soo good. The decor has improved a ton, but maybe some new vinyl that matches the awesome red stools at the bar would put this place over the top and really give it that classic diner feel. There's no booze (maybe they could think about adding bloody marys and mimosas on the weekends?), they only take cash, and the coffee is only so-so... but man, the food is great.

I have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about. This was the worst breakfast I have ever had. Eggs Over Medium were fine, but pancakes and cottage fries were horrible. Coffee was so-so. Staff was friendly We will not be back.

Tried it out this morning, saw all the reviews how everyone is raving about the food and the atmosphere . I honestly, don't see what the big deal is. Its your basic cheap crap diner..and there's plenty of those in Denver. Its small and absolutely 1950's tacky decorated; album covers, various trinkets on the walls. You get the point. I got the "hillbilly" which is your basic biscuits and gravy with eggs and sausage. I will say, my food was cooked thoroughly. Having my recent experience of raw sausage has put me on high alert. The biscuits seemed to be made relatively fresh and large in size. However, things got a little weird when I ate their potatos. I like the idea of having potatos sliced with skin on them . But I kept getting a faint smell and taste of garlic salt. I am not a fan of garlic with potato.. at least not in the breakfast sense. hSo I couldnt finish them. The white gravy , although seems to be "homemade" seriously lacked in flavor . I don't know why , it looked like it had potential, but let me down. I didn't have a lot of it so everything was extremely dry after a few mins. I drank all my water and waited for someone to come by . Didnt really happen, the lady ( which I'm assuming is Fran) came by often for refills on coffee, but looked me over several times. She brought the check and cleared away plates and then asked me if I wanted more water. Gee I just got my check and I'm ready to leave but yes please refill my drink .Overall, a bit of a let down. I doubt I will return.
