I have been a devotee of Gordo's Mexican food since they were on West Colfax near Wadsworth, and then at their restaurant on 6th and Sheridan. This incarnation is in the old Vern's Chinese place at 44th and Wadsworth. Their tomato based hot green chile is simply the best I have ever tasted and I've had it all over the U.S. I always order the chile rellenos and cheese enchiladas smothered with their fab green chile. My husband loves the shredded beef margarita burrito smothered with their relleno sauce that is very flavorful but not as spicy hot as the green chile. The restaurant waitstaff has been with them for years and they unfailingly remember what we like to order. The restaurant is in the back of a neighborhood bar (with pool table) that is frequented by many regulars. It is not at all a date-type fine dining restaurant, but it does have fabulous Mexican food! We try to get here at least once a month even though it is now 15 miles away.

Always liked this place and now it serves Mexican food. I like the chili rellenos or the bean burrito. The chili isn't too hot and I like it that way. They served beer in a giant mason jar, which is a nice twist and gives the place a homey feel. Lots of pool tables (3) and tons of racing memoribilia around if you are a racing fan.

Have you ever walked into a place, and it just felt like home? Like everyone was warm and friendly, the food was outstanding, the staff helpful and family-like, you could tell it was someone's baby and every bit of decor reflected their passion...and you just knew you could just relax and be yourself in a warm hug of familiarity and hospitality? This is not that place. But in the weirdest way, I was really encouraged after my experience here. I really CAN open a risky type of restaurant someday! It turns out, you can have a restaurant in the heart of Wheat Ridge that is absolutely horrible and still stay in business! You can have a menu that has nothing to do with your name! Lordy! Oh my gosh this place is lackluster! Why? Why? The font on the sign is so cool! It's got such a great location! Wheat Ridge and Lakewood are just aching for a great place to eat! Even if you aren't going to grill anything (?), this state loves their Mexican food and EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THE POPULATION can make at least one decent Mexican dish! You just can't go wrong, right?! right? I swear to you that the salsa came out with Pace Picante sauce, right from the bottle. It was that sweet and ketchupy and gross with little green squares of bell pepper. The "sliders" were just ordinary squashy hamburger buns with a little sad puck of gray hamburger meat and some sort of nondescript relish, dry and completely seasoning free and requiring repeated dunks in ketchup to just make it swallow-able. The guacamole was lightly salted mashed avocados, no more, it seemed. Zero appeal. Zero care put into making it. Chili Rellenos had layers and layers of uncooked wonton wrapper to chew through like stretchy lasagna noodles. The refried beans had that crusty weird topping that occurs when they're been in a steam table with the lid off. Even the bean burrito had this crunchy layer involved, and the beans taste canned, at best. Bland weird food, every single bite. So disappointing. We decided there was not a single thing we tasted that we would ever want to eat again. And where are the "grill" items? Ugh! I hate spending money on bad meals! The service was odd and very unfriendly. The bar kept to itself and I refilled our drinks by walking up and waiting...and waiting... we were there on a Tuesday night with very little dinner traffic. So why the cold shoulder? I smiled, I was patient, I didn't complain... waiting.... waiting... Yep, there's racing memorabilia everywhere, which creates an odd contrast to to the leftover oriental-motif frosted glass windows. Then, there's the booth upholstery that recalls the skating rinks of yesteryear. And some sad leftovers from That Design Era Where Everyone Loved Cheap Southwestern Crap. Add to that multicolored "icicle" Christmas lights around the bar, the garish neon wall jukebox and the assorted bar patrons, and you've got yourself quite an eyeful. Whoa nellie, I didn't even think those hand dryers that are a giant rotating (damp) towel were still legal in restaurants, but there it was in the Ladies Room -- the big subliminal message from those things has always been to me, 'share germs with everyone!' There's also a shaky scary toilet whose lid has been glued together with (unfortunately tinted for bathroom usage) dark brown glue (by someone who uses their elbow to apply glue, it would seem) that may discourage you a little, as well. But there was a steady stream of persons who play pool enough to own their own pool cue, and several people at the bar who clearly spend a great deal of time there getting to know one another, including an exhausted looking woman who decided the entire bar might like to babysit her four year old while she kicked a couple back. Mmmmmmmmkay. Who am I to judge? These people keep this place running, and they're just fine without me and my snooty need to enjoy a meal, and that's just fine. In the end, after vowing never to return, we mused on other utter stinker restaurants that kept their doors open (that awful Mickey's Bistro on 38th came to mind) and that maybe going out to dinner for some people isn't all about the food, or the service, the bar, the care put into pampering the patrons, the cleanliness of the bathrooms, or the decor and associated ambiance... there's just a special "it" factor for some restaurants that forgives being utterly rotten in all the other categories. I just completely failed to recognize it here.

Had dinner here again. Amazing place and great food. Chris M. Most of been there in the first days of take over. The owners are in there 40's. The place was busier then I have seen in years. The bartenders I met have been there for years. A few new ones. Cannot wait to spend St. Patties Day there. Everyone there tonight loved the place.

I live not too far from this bar. I would love for it to be a regular hang out being only blocks away from my house. But it's not....They only have 2-3 beers on tap, and the food...well let me tell you about that. My girlfriend ordered the tortilla soup. It looked like a bowl of water with some chicken pieces and some tortilla strips floating in grease....it was awful. And they have no drink specials to speak of. Not to mention their NASCAR decor that makes me feel like I'm in a dive bar in Kentucky. The wait staff is avg at best. Visit this place with low expectations.

This place is new stumbled upon this diamond in the rough one afternoon for lunch. My wife and I loved it. I think it's called Tia Leah's or something like that, any ways the sign says 44th ave Grill it's the old Gordos. Place was clean services was great and the food was priced just right. I will be back for sure.

The new layout of this place is open, inviting, and comfortable. The food is good and reasonably priced. .Everything you could want in a neighborhood bar. Fresh management and an experienced staff make a great experience for regulars and newbies alike.

Just heard the bad news. Sadly, Gordo's fell out of favor with the 44th Ave Grill management and closed on Feb. 28. The Rogers family has hopes of opening again in a new location soon. They still own the property at 6th and Sheridan and would like to demolish the building on that site and rebuild but the city of Lakewood is making that plan difficult. Lon Rogers, who ran Gordo's since the 80s passed away last year and the business and decades old recipes are now handled by his widow (Gwen) and his son (Eric). This has been the Gordo's location for quite a few years now. They were on Colfax and near Wadsworth as a kid growing up, then moved to 6th and Sheridan. Somewhere along the line, the management of the 44th Avenue Grill acquired the rights to Gordo's property and moved the food up north, and there honestly seems to be a lot of confusion left by reviewers, they seem to be reviewing the food served by the bar rather than the Mexican food/Gordo's. The new restaurant is not quite as big as the old place and decorated a bit differently, but it still retains a lot of the feel of the old place, and, most importantly, the food. Gordo's has been in Colorado since 1924, I believe, and everyone we have taken to Gordo's has fallen in love with their food. The salsa tastes great, nothing like store bought. HANDS DOWN, they have the BEST chile rellenos in all of Colorado, THE BEST! I would recommend the chile rellenos sauce that Gordo's makes, too. Amazing! Get a side of rice and beans, and you're in heaven!!! Their spanish rice just has this great, unique taste that I have ALWAYS loved! Whether you are an old fan, or just looking for good Mexican food in the Wheat Ridge area, stop in to Gordo's and have a taste of Denver history. The place is not fancy, but they have a good product and a good price with plenty of free parking right near the front door.

We have been going here since they were at their original location and have been visiting the 44th location since they moved in to the bar. The ambiance is not as great as the other location, but the food is still PERFECT. PERFECT. I eat a lot of Mexican food- authentic, spicy, bland, simple, slathered in sauce, cheesy, meaty, vegetarian, divey, expensive and everything in between- AND THIS IS THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD. We always get to-go orders of beans, rice, meat and green chili to keep in the freezer and/or serve at family dinners and on holidays. There is one male server that is always there and he is very attentive and sweet. Seriously, doesn't matter if this place is in a sketchy, dead bar- the food is so worth it, I promise. I heard they are going out of business soon, and not kidding- this will ruin my life. I have been going here since I was a child with my dad and he would go when he was younger and didn't have kids. GORDOS- I LOVE YOU.

We went in there tonight and the bartender was sooooo RUDE! OMG. We asked her for drinks and she stared at us like we were idiots. Skipped us moved onto the next person and FINALLY after her regulars called her out on it she came back. I asked her for my tab and I told her I would pay cash. She ran my card. Thanks a lot. SO SO SO RUDE. I will not be going back ever. My sister and her boyfriend are regulars and we went there for them and I wonder why they go back when she treats people who are not regulars like this. She may get tipped more by people if she wasn't so rude. We are all in the industry also, so it really sucks for her. I hope she succeeds being a bitch.

I've decided it's time to update my review since I was told it wasn't fair since it was just taken over by new owners. Well I was told it would be ready may 1 st, well not even close it still looks the same as it did when I wrote the last review. Still have to sit at the bar to watch TV with one TV on some dumb music channel. There is a big TV facing the tables where no one ever sits. The menu is still the same they were suppose to update and expand it. The cook reeks of weed all the time which is gross, and the kitchen is suppose to be open until 9 pm but is always closes early even when the bar is full (sorry pool leagues). I think the owners have given up, one owner just wanders from the kitchen to the bar and stares at the bartender and back, he never helps out by bussing tables or anything just gets wasted with the cook. Even the regulars are starting to get upset. But at least they fired the guy bartender that was a complete whack job. So if you enjoy not being able to watch sports and enjoy the food that smells like weed, you'll love this place.

Interesting. Located more off 44th than right at the corner, it's to the left of the Walgreens. Walk in and to the right is the neighborhood bar with standard pool table, Colorado smoking patio, and not much else. Turn to the left and you enter the "restaurant". All the required costumed freaks were out for an early Halloween. The place is small inside and probably has not seen a redecoration since it was opened in the 70s or 80s. Either a lot of people had gas there that night or there was a problem with the drains behind the bar. Anyway... arrived at the restaurant at 8:30 PM and there was only one other couple there. "Promptly" sat down since there uh wasn't much of a wait. Basically the food is overpriced ($7.95 for 3 fried, Safeway chicken strips and a bucket of greasy fries) and the tortilla chips look like they came straight from a bag of Tostidos. I didn't try, but was told, that the salsa came from Walmart. I wasn't expecting avante garde here but I was expecting an effort from the restaurant that claims it has the "best Mexican food in Northern Colorado." Um, er, yea. This used to be called Vinnies or something and used to serve Chinese. Apparently painting the chairs in the dining room bright colors now makes it Mexican (with the exception of the Chicken strips and 2 burgers that, honestly, I was afraid to try.) To top the evening off, the car next to us had a drunk try to get into it and drive home. He failed to put the vehicle in Reverse correctly and smashed into some other poor soul around 12:00. Since this is Wheat Ridge and there is nothing else to do, of course no less than 5 squad cars responded. We were stuck there until 12:45 when the mess was straightened out, cars moved, and we could leave. At least our vehicles were not hit. Another entertaining weekend in Wheat Ridge. Honestly, the bar is "passable", there was 1 pool table, 2 tiny TVs, a huge bar, a huge dining room, and horrible karaoke. I stuck to the pre-processed foods and didn't get sick - but I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back. Rest rooms were respectably clean but the waitress that served us was clueless - so overall it averages out to a solid 2.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
