Road Trip Notable Nosh # 3 (See Lists) Hubs got take-out for us here, since dogs weren't allowed to be left alone in our hotel room. This was at one end of the historic Route 66 journey for us, and I hid underneath the covers of our bed for the night, listening to the wind howling through the desert, and watching sand splatter across all our windows. It was spooky. I half expected to see tumbleweeds and the ghost of Jesse James. The dogs were also perturbed, and I believe them to have a sixth sense. For the record, we didn't stay at the Inn itself, and our hotel across town was pretty nice. We got a huuuuge spread of food, as we needed a late lunch as well as dinner, to be reheated as necessary later. We had: Salmon and Rice entree with steamed veggies Chicken Fried Steak entree with I believe came with some mashed potatoes and also steamed veggies Vegetable Soups Crabcakes appetizer (didn't eat these as a few hours later, refrigerated, they didn't smell very fresh ...) Homemade Brown Bread Creme Brulee Pie The brown bread (soft, moist and fresh) and the pie (sweet, creamy and satisfying) were spectacular. Everything else was filling, wholesome and adequate. The only odd thing to report was that the cashier insisted my husband had a black eye on his Driver's License, which he did not. When he graciously insisted that no, he'd never been in a fight, she wouldn't drop the issue. Maybe she was bored at work?

We stayed at this lovely turn of the century hotel on our way down to the Sand Dunes National Park. Positives: I absolutely loved the place. The hotel has been refurbished in old timey style but has modernized CLEAN en suite bathrooms and an array of rooms to choose from (some have a kitchenette and connected adjoining looking more like a miniature apartment then regular rooms). There is a common area atop the stairs with a SMALL tv, dvd, vcr combo. They offer a small selection of kids and family movies, but the old bus depot in town is a good place for a rental. Some games are also available to use. A snacks and beverage station is located at the end of the hall. They have a keurig machine with pods of several types of coffee, a mini fridge with milk, some fruit and also some cheese crackers and instant oatmeal. I thought this was awesome in case someone was hungry or missed bfast!!! All the staff, including the owners, are super friendly! The service was impeccable. Their restaurant seemed like the best option for dinner. The food was good and plentiful (we had the burgers and fresh veggies for $9, the peppers were delicious) and the orange chocolate cake was delicious as well according to my friend (huge portion). Breakfast was included and was served in the bistro area. It included bananas, muffins, coffee, orange juice. Once seated the owner brought us a platter including scrambled eggs, two blueberry pancakes and two sausage links with syrup. Negatives: THE TRAINS! Unfortunately the trains honk and honk so loud it literally RATTLES YOUR BRAIN! I have never experienced anything like it AND I LIVE NEXT TO THE RAILROAD! Nothing they can do about it at La Plaza inn. I am sure that the sound is just as loud anywhere in Walsenburg. Make sure you bring some ear plugs! I fell asleep around 5 am :( The mattress in room 3 was really really bad. I am talking like, old grandma' springs mattress that has seen many many customers! There is no if, ands or buts, THEY NEED NEW MATTRESSES. They are crucial for the traveler. Who wants to sleep in a squeaky, lumpy mattress after a long day's drive? There is no TEA on the self serve station in the common area's hall. I really wanted a hot tea after dinner as coffee has the habit of keeping you up at night (more time to hear the trains). There was no DECAF either even though there were 3 different coffee types to choose from :( I wish there were more fresh fruit for bfast. I am one of few people who does not eat eggs, sausage, or pancakes. So really I wish they would have told us they were bringing us a plate with this selection, so I would have not waisted all that food :(( I hate waisting food and I could have just as well have eaten two muffins and two bananas and be happy (or a banana and some other fresh fruit LOL). This B&B is still almost 2 hrs drive from the Dunes. Waiting for breakfast to be served at 8:30 we ended up at the park by 11. That was already too hot for the dunes :(

We stayed here one night and really enjoyed it. The people who work there are so friendly! The restaurant is good and the atmosphere is fun & quirky. The only negative is that between that hours of 10pm-6am, the train passed by twice and, both times, blew it's horn multiple times. It was so loud I think the entire town of Walsenburg could hear it so maybe you would hear it at any hotel.

This review is for both the inn as a place to stay and the restaurant. I stayed in room two, which was clean and comfortable and met my needs as a single traveler. I think it would be fine for two people who don't mind sleeping in a double bed. I felt safe at this inn as a woman traveling alone. I had dinner in the restaurant since I didn't feel like going out again after a long day of driving before I arrived. The dinner was very good: I went with something simple and not too large since I didn't want leftovers, so I had a bowl of soup (chicken rice vegetable), a side salad, and a slice of the coconut cream pie special. Everything was delicious, though the salad relied a lot on iceberg lettuce. This was redeemed by the refreshing apple vinaigrette dressing recommended by my server. The pie was the best thing about the meal (no surprises there...), and the dark brown bread with REAL butter that came on the side with dinner was tasty. I would definitely stay here again if passing through Walsenburg. My only regret is that breakfast is not served until 8:30, and I need to be back on the road earlier than that.

We stumbled into this quaint inn in downtown Walsenburg, not expecting the sophisticated menu. She had chicken, I had fish, both accompanied by a carafe of a nice Napa Valley wine. The tomato soup and fresh garden salads were delicious, as was the cream brûlée - like pie that finished our meal. The big surprise was the bill -- $50 for the two of us. We left Mary a nice tip for her friendly, attentive service.

We were desperate. We pulled into town on a Friday night without reservations. Every where we called was booked. Then I pulled up yelp and found The Plaza Inn. So serendipitous! The owners were downstairs enjoying a glass of wine at the little bar they put in. They let us purchase dinner though it was much after closing time. The salad and pasta were delivered to our room and delicious. It had an eclectic feel, and the trains are close by. They offered to make us whatever we wanted for a hot breakfast but we had already eaten at the continental breakfast they provided out side of our rooms. All for $80. Awesome!

We stumbled upon this gem. What a find! It is a charming bed and breakfast. I felt like I was back at the turn of the century and Jesse James would walk in any moment. The proprietor enjoyed a glass of wine with us at the bar along with a local. Both were very willing to share the history of the area and loved living here. The room was had was perfectly pink and very pleasant and homey. We told them we were on a girls weekend. So fitting. Cute old furniture everywhere. Breakfast included in the morning or the cereal bar if your an early bird. Would recommend this as a destination as well as a place for the night on your to somewhere else.

We have been to Walsenburg many times and are always at a loss at where to eat. We walked around town and found the La Plaza B&B and Restaurant so we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised. Our meals had a nice presentation; they were tasty and hot. We tried the homemade coconut pie - absolutely delicious! Service was fast and efficient, and the dining area is clean and pleasant. We will return.

Were it not for the Internet, I would never have found this place, much less eat in the restaurant. We were heading home from Durango, CO to the DFW area and were starving. We called to find out what kind of food was served and stopped by. What a pleasant surprise! The restaurant is in the library / bookstore where they have over 5,000 titles on the shelves. I had the pulled pork sandwich with glazed onions and homemade fresh cut fries. My wife had the spaghetti with meat sauce. The bun on my sandwich was homemade and very fresh and soft. The meals were very tasty. After eating, I strolled thru the hotel lobby and formal dining area. I was very impressed and will most likely stay here when traveling thru Walsenburg in the future.

Stopped here for lunch while returning to KS from Southwestern CO. It was the first place we found open so we took a chance. We were so glad we did; our lunches were awesome! Burgers were great, fries awesome and priced great for the amount of food you get. Save room for dessert too! The caramel cheesecake was incredible!

We live near La Plaza so we enjoy dinner there on Friday or Saturday night for Prime Rib. It is our "go to place" when company comes to visit. Lunch is always nice and the patio is fun in the summer. Many evenings you will find live music on the patio. We love La Plaza!

Very nice and spacious room. The paint and decor looked kind of old and scuffed in many places, but the big space made up for it. Most of the staff was friendly, but some seemed a little snobby and annoyed when asked questions! The shower though...there was hair everywhere! So gross. It's not that hard to rinse it down. I'm guessing that meant they didn't even glance in the shower to clean it. The food in the restaurant downstairs was amazing and got an A+.

I went here because I wanted a nice meal regardless of price. Upon entering the restaurant I was hit by the 1980s Hunter Green bookshelves and a bunch if cheap garage sale crap which decorated the tiny space. Plastic tablecloths were on the diner style tables and rolled up cheap silverware in paper napkins were haphazardly placed on the table. A waitress came over and gave me a menu which appeared as if there could be a chef on staff. The various dishes sounded good and the prices were on the high side of moderate. I thought the food should be delicious. Another person came over and took my order. She seemed like some sort of manager or something but she didn't have an apron or uniform and didn't say why she bumped the other waitress off the table. She was a little rough and there seemed to be tension between the two. I ordered a New York Strip and mashed potatoes. They have free baked bread with real butter which was very good. A choice of soup or salad comes with the meal so I had salad. It came nicely cut however the dressing was in a plastic side cup rather than a small dish. Next came the main entree. It was cooked exactly as ordered but had zero flavor. I also ordered sautéed mushrooms and they were also bland. The mashed potatoes were on the plate in a cafeteria style bowl. They tasted like they had flour in them and were disgusting. I didn't eat them. Side vegetables were on the plate and completely overdone but I did eat them. The best part of the meal was the bread but my favorite part was when it was over. They must have REALLY high tax there because a $17 meal plus tax was $21 plus tip. Personally, I should have just went to the store and got a Tony's pizza. It might be cheap but has a lot more flavor!

I have yet to stay in the hotel portion of La Plaza, but I go to the restaurant on a regular basis. I love the restaurant. Great food, decent if slightly slow service. But, the true treasure is the home made desserts. They make them fresh every day and truly know what they are doing. Still waiting for their take on key lime pie though.
