Good turkey sprout sandwich & green chili soup & chili good sweet potato fries must stop your next time in Silverton

One of our favorites in Silverton and you won't be disappointed. ALWAYS busy, so plan to wait for a table, but the scenery outside is incredible, so you won't mind. The staff is efficient and friendly. The food is consistently good... not great, but always good. Good choices for kids and they have a full bar. If you don't like taxidermy, you may not appreciate the eclectic atmosphere, but most enjoy it. Save room for the home made peach cobbler... it is aptly named the Mother Load. Yum Yum!

Sit at the bar and hope that Ken is manning the helm. CFS is pan fried and was so filling I didn't made it to the mashed potatoes and the nice looking roll. The girls also had the Chili and said it was very good. Will definitely make a point to go back. Several more items on the menu that I want to try.

So, we chose to eat here because it seemed like the best choice for visitors to Silverton. First impression: cool decor, nice atmosphere, surly staff. The woman who took our drink order and our waitress both seemed like they would rather be at a Justin Bieber concert than talking to us. The waitress was leaving work (or just had enough of it) and transferred us to a guy who was much friendlier and more attentive. The food... Uhh, meh. Given the prices on the menu, I was surprised it was so bland and basic. The 'salad' was less of a salad and more of a bowl of dressing with pieces of crap lettuce floating in it. No really, it was scary. At least it had three croutons on it. The tuna sandwich was okay. I mean, you can't really screw that up. It was like eating at Jimmy John's, minus the amazing bread. My friend got food poisoning. The only two things he had that no one else ate were the chili and the Rocky Mountain oysters... Not a pleasant combination of food to be vomiting up.

Great energy, HUGE salads, delicious ribs and wings! Best place for dinner in Silverton. Ken and Kathy are the best!! Can't wait to visit again when in town!!

Wonderful food. Finally!! After spending time in Ouray, we were tired of the basic crappy pub grub fare, we found this place. Had the chicken with avocado and sprouts sandwich, the Cobb salad and the chili. All were superb, fresh and very tasty. The chili is legit!! Service was great and our food came out quick. Highly recommended.

Handlebars is a Silverton classic. I've been eating here once or twice each summer since 2001. The positive to Handlebars is the consistency. It's the same blah stuff they've been serving for 25 years. For example, I had what could have been a fine salad for my main entree. The fruit and nuts and even the dressing were perfectly proportioned and pretty tasty. But instead of using something as "risky" as mixed greens, they used iceberg. The bottom line is don't have a lot of expectations. This place is riding on years of reputation of being a little bit better and more consistent than most of the competitors that come and go in this mostly economically struggling town. The menu is also designed to be extremely affordable to please the crowds of low budget Jeepers and off roaders. So when you see the overall high star rating for this place just understand the context in which it's happening.

Great little dive that comes with an attitude, give it right back to the crew and they love it. Best chicken fried steak I've had in a long time, add a few cold beers, and it's a great lunch. Wife had a bison cheeseburger, and it was great. 4 stars for a great 90 min break from the train.
(4)Melissa B.
A fun place to hunker down during a spring snow! The food was fine for bar food, the beer was good, but the scene made it memorable!
(4)Abe M.
Like most places in Silverton, this place is in an old brick building. The interior is filled with old mining town character, including a "rare" flying jack-a-lope. Staff is really nice, and service was quick. I ordered the bbq hamburger, which was excellent. I could have done with a slightly fresher salad, but considering the location, I took what I could get. The local beer on draft was great.
(4)David R.
So we walked in and out of several restaurants in this little town and we really liked the reviews and the atmosphere at Handlebars. We ended up with the owner as our server, what a piece of work. I ordered the BBQ bacon burger with fries and she told me that they come mixed with sweet potato fries. So I explained to the nice lady that I didn't want sweet potatoes, she told me "tough shit" So far this place rocks and I highly recommend it. The food was awesome, my son loved his burger and guess what, so did I. My wife loved her salad and grandma and grandpa both loved the French dip. Please visit this place because the owners and the staff deserve your business, this is the best restaurant in Silverton.

My father-in-law loves this place took us here for lunch while we were visiting and we all loved it. It was packed but the staff was efficient, friendly and courteous. There were six of us and we ordered the reuben, chicken fried steak, burgers, cheese steak and chicken pot pie - all were delicious. Plus, they have sweet potato fries as a side. They cook burgers to medium but I requested med rare and got it. Service was excellent, water glasses refilled, food arrived as ordered and in a timely manner. Excellent service and delicious food in a deliberately funky atmosphere, can't wait for my next trip to Colorado so I can go back.

Silverton is truly a one horse town and it caters, completely, to tourists. That's why Handlebars was such a surprise. It operates out of the longest standing soon I'm town and is chock full, literally, with interesting and some historic chatskis. It's small and they cram 'em and turn 'em out fast! The service is friendly, fast and efficient. Most surprising was the food, it was great! The veggie Sammy was fresh and delicious; salads were crisp and full of veg with a yummy homemade vinaigrette. The chicken fried steak was freshly prepared and huge, with a side of homemade mashed potatoes with a delicious gravy. Burgers were also huge and tasty, with freshly fried fries with the perfect amount of salt. The French fried sweet potatoes were also excellent.
(4)Sharee H.
Handlebars is part of a yearly pilgrimage from utah. The cramped quarters and tacky dusty dead animals are just part of the fun ambiance. The food is fast yummy and affordable. Be sure to save room for dessert after eating your large buffalo burger and fries. All four desserts are delicious.
(4)Robin M.
The atmosphere is unique, but the food isn't. This is the second time we've tried this place. The prime rib is super fatty and chewy, good thing you get a large cut because after you cut thru the fat, you have barely enough fire a meal. The salad was cold but very small. The pork chops were over cooked, dry and barely edible. I always give a place a couple of chances..this was its second time. We won't be going back. Don't waste your money.

Last night, ordered chicken pot pie with small dinner salad. Salad came with one, very rotten/brown/wrinkled tomato in clear view. Brought to waitress' attention, she grabbed the salad, walked over the bar, threw tomato in the trash and brought salad back to table and sald "Gone". She threw the salad on the table so hard that the lettuce fell out.. We got up and left fhe restaurant with food (and cocktail) untouched. We went to Brown Bear around the corner where everyone was cheery, nice and glad to have us as a customer.
(1)Matthew C.
Went here with the boys on a gold panning expedition.. No gold! Restaurant was a fun place to go to waste money in Silverton. You must understand, THERE ain't Crap in Silverton! Almost better to pack a picnic basket. This is a tourist trap if there has ever been one. The guy who owned the hotel (dive) we stayed at suggested this place. It was O.K. considering that civilization was at least an hour away in Durango. I would hate to be trapped here in a snow storm!
(3)Amanda B.
Fun atmosphere, great service. Agree with other reviewers that the elk burger was like any other ho hum burger. Other than that, all in our party enjoyed their meal. Would come back.
(4)Janee G.
We love coming here every summer trip to Silverton. The prices are decent for the HUGE portions. Its always packed which tells you its good food!!
(5)Dan S.
Ate here for lunch while camping in South Mineral Campground, not far from Silverton. We were here in mid June of last year, sort of between touristy seasons so the whole town was kind of empty. We were the only ones in the place when we walked in, so of course the service was impeccable. Bison burger was tasty! I had never had bison before and I think I might be hooked on it now...Beer was good too! We now have a Handlebars Saloon mason jar complete with handle sitting on our shelf.
(5)Phil K.
Lots of atmosphere, service was good. Honey dipped chicken & chili soup were very good. Bread pudding with bourbon was delicious.
(4)John H.
I was not impressed with this place. Definitely a place for the tourists, which is to say that it has more style than substance. My elk burger tasted like every other burger I've ever had. The service was average at best.
(3)Kevin B.
I have rarely, make that never, been to a restaurant with such rude service persons. We purposefully arrived before the train traffic did because we had 12 people. The staff acted as if their world had fallen in. The food was acceptable Sysco re-heats. The service was completely unacceptable. It is obvious, they only care about one-time visitors because no one would return with that type of behavior from servers. BTW, tipping is mandatory for parties of six or more. SO they can treat you like POO and get away with it.
(1)Dianne B.
We had lunch here after a day of touring Ouray and Silverton. The food was hearty and tasty and the service was great. Great atmosphere too!
(4)Bill S.
Tourist trap with the rudest bartender in colorado I've met. Walked in and sat at the bar and was greeted by a gray short haired older bartender. I asked for something lighter in color of a beer and he offered the local beer. I asked again about the color and he looked at me with guests and repeated, "Amber" 5 times. I tried it and after he came back up to sell me another 5 dollar draft, I should have said, "Rude, rude, rude but I didn't. We all left without eating and his tip was, "Treat your patrons like guests, not as bothering visitors as you did." Tip; Don't waste your time."
(1)Keith S.
Great small town burger joint and saloon. Burgers tasted great and offered sweet potato fries at no extra cost lol. Cool decor and a small selection of specialty beer.
(4)Julia L.
So glad we found Handlebars on yelp!! This place was incredible. The salads were fresh and tasty. We wanted an adventure with food, and certainly got it here. Wanted to start the meal with some Colorado Rocky Mountain Oysters, we loved them!! The deep fried appetizers had a light taste of liver (which is just fine with me!!) and had that extra kick with the house BBQ sauce. My friend Charlie & I wanted to try both the Elk burger & Buffalo burger, so we split each in half & tried them both. The Elk was a bit bland, but it certainly wasn't gamey. The Buffalo on the other hand was far better than even the best hamburger I've tasted, it's flavor is like a burger made of the finest grade beef. The service was exceptional, oozing with atmosphere. We loved this place....just wish there was one in California!! : )
(5)Berenice B.
Loved this place!! Ken the owner is awesome!! Food was very good, the beer too!! We will be back on our next motorcycle trip up there.
(5)Kerry M.
What a tourist trap!!! A lady in Ridgway, CO recommended this place to us, so we thought we'd give it a try. The service was terrible, the food was NOT good, and our waitress was downright weird. Some of her friends came in while we were in there, and she basically ignored us the rest of the time we ate. Even while she was at our table (when we summoned her for a refill or something), she would talk across several tables at her friends and ignore what we were saying. I ordered a chicken fried steak that honestly tasted like Dairy Queen steak strips - obviously shipped in from somewhere and taken out of the freezer. The baked potato was really good. My husband ordered the trout and enjoyed it, but said it was just average at best. Don't get caught up in the hype of this place - there have to be better places in Silverton!!!
(2)Ralph K.
Great service, good food and good atmosphere. We would return when in Silverton!

Handlebars is a rustic 1800's style restaurant and saloon. It is located in the tiny town of Silverton just off Green St. on W. 13th St. When I step through the entrance I feel like I am taking a step back in time to the old west. Old west collectibles cover the walls and hang from the ceiling. Mining memorabilia is abundant, including an ore bucket that was used to carry ore on a steel cable from the mountain to be processed. Many days you will find a warm, cozy fire blazing away in that old mining bucket. No old west restaurant would be complete without a collection of mounted animals. Handlebars has plenty. The restaurant is on the small side and tables are close together which adds to the cozy atmosphere. The Dinner menu includes steaks, ribs, chicken, chicken fried steak, chops, pasta, and some fish. Other menu items include a variety of food including: Homemade Soups including cream of green chili soup, chicken tortilla (my favorite), salads and tasty sandwiches. Numerous varieties of burgers are offered such as Buffalo Bill's famous Buffalo Burger, Doc Holliday's Green Chili Burger, and Auntie M's Veggie Deluxe. The food has always been very good barring one time when two members of our party had the trout which was less than desirable. The service is friendly and courteous.

Had a great meal here after a long day of playing in the mountains. Everyone ordered burgers (Elk, Bison) and were happy with their choices. Prices weren't too bad (~$10).
(4)Derek C.
I really liked Handlebars! We were having lunch in Silverton, CO and went off the positive Yelp review for Handlebars and were not disappointed. The food was nothing special - it was good, don't get me wrong, just nothing overly unique - but the atmosphere and the service were great! The setting is a memorabilia filled mountain mining town saloon. Lots of Handlebar moustache themed stuff on the walls. I had the elk burger which was not all that much different than hamburger and the bison chili. I would definitely not mind going back to Handlebars if I ever am in Silverton again! Note, the restaurant is on side street, just a few steps down from the town's main street.
(4)Amelia W.
Bland and highly overrated. My husband had the fried chicken and I had the chicken fried steak. They both tasted like frozen cafeteria food. The "Handlebar Amber" beer is actually just New Belgium's Fat Tire--we were duped. The atmosphere is kitschy and the waitstaff were plenty friendly. It definitely seemed like a popular spot, but only because there were other poor suckers like myself who thought they could trust reviews. Seriously, it may be ranked highly on yelp, but there are better places to enjoy food in Silverton.
(1)Connie W.
Outstanding service. The owner and his wife came and sat with us to make sure our food was to our satisfaction. They ended up having several drinks with us. Cathy, the owners wife makes the best long island ice teas west of long island. Best menu feature is the brisket I would advise you to have a designated driver upon leaving this place
(5)Patrick C.
During the busiest time of the day the service here is just outstanding. Five of us were very satisfied with a diverse selection of lunchtime fare.
(5)George L.
Thanks to Yelp, i found Handlebars for lunch. Perfect. Great food. Great atmosphere. Great job, Handlebars!!
(5)David A.
Bottom line is we spent three days in Silverton and ate here at least once per day. We visited EVERY other eating establishment and no one ever seemed busy, which is scary. This place on the other hand always had people waiting outside. We always had great service (even visits from Manager who if I remember right name is Ted) just to make sure everything was ok. Good food, hot things hot and cold things cold. Never had to ask for a re-fill as they were there. Sorry I only get to go here on an annual basis.
(5)Susan S.
After an amazing drive up the million dollar highway from Durango, we were ready for a repast and were celebrating my husband's birthday. What treat to walk into a real western bar and restaurant with good microbrews and homemade food. We loved the ambience and the delicious cheese chili soup. The staff were friendly and we did not feel like tourists just passing through this very characteristic town.
(4)chris f.
So my girlfriend and I went here since our friend recommended going in and getting a beer. We should have stopped with just the beer. We were on a week journey through the mountains and were hungry at the time of arrival so we got some "world famous" soup and buffalo burgers to go with the beer. The patty looked and tasted pathetic and the soup was just as bad. The beer was about 5 bucks for a small glass. The atmosphere was nice, but in case you didn't notice, the town is sitting in the middle of a beautiful mountain landscape. If you do stop in, just stick with the beer and take some pics of this joint, but don't waste your time with the food.
(2)Morgan H.
Handlebars is a must for anyone anywhere NEAR Silverton. Best bbq sauce I've ever had, and there is nothing better than putting that on a burger with cheese and bacon. I can't remember the name of the burger now, but it's the best i've ever had. their soup is delicious, french dip is out of this world, and just about anything else will leave you more than happy.
(5)M M.
We were here in September 07 for lunch after taking the train from Durango to Silverton. We sat up at the bar and had our lunch. The service was friendly and the food service was efficient. I had a salad and my boyfriend had a sandwich. I think it's a good spot for lunch.
(4)Tammi M.
Great restaurant in Silverton. We had the avocado sandwich, cheese steak sandwich, french onion soup, mud pie and peach cobbler for dessert. The grilled avocado sandwich was great!~ The desserts were good. I prefer my peach cobbler to be a little juicier. The cheese steak sandwich was tasty but for a man could have used a little more meat. Everything I saw there looked good. Service was great! Check out all the wall decor:)
(4)Adam M.
Very friendly people. Good place to stop if you're ever passing through. Not too far off the main highway.
(5)B N.
This is exactly the type of place I was hopi g to enjoy a old beer and a great meal at after making the ride from Durango to silverton. Possibly one of my favorite restaurants I have ever been to. Elk burger was awesome!!
(5)Jonathan H.
We came here on the recommendation of another family. The food was ok; nothing spectacular for any of us. The dishes were: chicken pot pie, beef taco salad, fried chicken, ribs, and the roast beef with au jus. Fries were cold, and the roast beef was lukewarm at best. The service was ok as well, just average. The worst part for us was how cramped the restaurant was. We were constantly being bumped by the staff and other patrons. We were happy to pay our bill and get back to the open space of the street outside. Overall, you can find better food elsewhere.
(3)Eric B.
Walked off the Durango to Silverton train, suffering a little from the altitude. Not sure what to expect, but this place was the most crowded, which I'll usually take as a good sign. Mini me had the mac n cheese, which was quickly devoured. I had the delicious chicken pot pie with a side of a combination of sweet potato and regular fries. Peach cobbler was great, too. Fun decor which may not appeal to your ardent PETA friends, although mini me loved the stuffed bison head et al. Our waitress was the perfect combination of attentive and sassy, if I were a local this would be a regular haunt.
(5)Greg A.
Fun restaurant to stop at if on vacation. Make sure to buy one of their fake mustaches.
(4)Dorothy M.
Best Rocky Mountain Oyster I've had. Okay before you order, find out what it is first. I also learned about the extinct flying jackalope. The servers are very friendly and helpful. A very old-timer and family-like place to eat.
(5)Jasmine C.
This used to be my favorite restaurant in Silverton for 8 years. Now I won't even eat there anymore. Same owners and stuff but the food just isn't good anymore. The ambiance is awsome but that doesn't make up for the crap food.
(2)Tony C.
A great historical site filled with much history. Service is no nonsense and extremely efficient. The Chili was wonderful and deserving of it's award status. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes were perfect home cooking. A great place to visit when in Silverton.
(4)Will H.
Dropped in for a shot and a beer on our way back to our hotel around 9pm on a Sunday.. place was packed, you'd seriously need hours to enjoy all the eclectic stuff on the walls, owner was tending bar... easygoing and friendly, didn't eat, but loved the buzz and the Colorado feel.... Silverton is one crazy town... this bar fits the western mould like a glove...a must see...
(4)Jamie E.
Very cute restaurant in Silverton. We stopped here for lunch during our jeeping adventure on the Alpine Loop. The decor is touristy and fun. Food was good and the prices were average for a tourist spot. Busy at lunchtime, but lots of shops to see while you wait.
(3)Teresa M.
This was our first trip to Silverton and we found the town to be wonderful and friendly. We stopped in Handlebars to grab some dinner. We chose this restaurant as it seemed to be the busiest which is usually a good sign. We were not disappointed! I had the Honey dipped fried Chicken which was crunchy and moist. My husband had the French onion soup and the ribs which were meaty and tender. A must is the peach cobbler for dessert! Beer was cold with a great selection, food was good and dessert was a great finish - that's 5 star in my book!
(5)Chance And Kasy S.
I do not like doing negative reviews due to the fact of looking like the one person having a bad day. My family has been coming to Silverton yearly for thirty years some times multiple times a year. This place used to be the best classic joint to get food in silverton. However, over the last few years service has been awful and more and more of the food taste frozen and heated up. There are better places to eat in Silverton to get mediocre food for a better price. It seems when the son took over the business it went down hill.
(1)Blunt R.
Average food... rude, unfriendly waitress... impatient bus boy... and overpriced. Tourist trap delux!
(2)Deanne J.
We ate here a few times while in town jeeping. Great food, great service. Salad and burgers were tasty.
(5)K H.
We were referred to this restaurant by a volunteer at the Ouray Visitor Center. He said for the past 17 years he has been getting their chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. He said you could cut it with a fork. He was not exaggerating. The place is very western, with mounted game heads and rough hewn wood all around. It's cozy - the tables are very tightly packed. The service is pretty decent, and the prices average for the area. If you're in Silverton experiencing the Old West, go to this restaurant and you won't be disappointed.
(4)Jeff S.
I love this old 19 century building, a fitting setting for a Silverton restaurant. Very clean with plenty of decoration to keep the eyes entertained. Staff is warm, friendly and welcoming. I am partial to family business' such as this. Service was perfect. The food is simply fantastic!
