Casual little place, like a mom 'n pop malt shop (imagine that), and yes, they know the difference between shakes and malts. Great for treats, I can't vouch for the food. We stopped here for treats on an afternoon after walking around downtown (or whatever you call that part of Pagosa). Fairly priced menu, the lady working the register was friendly and funny. My group enjoyed the shakes and sundaes. Shortly after we got there it got crowded fast from the skiers coming off the mountain for the day. Even then, I don't think the wait was long for anything.

Love these malts. We go here every time we visit family near Pagosa as a special treat. We've never tried the food so can't comment on that but the malts are delicious and the ice-cream portions are generous. We've only had one bad experience where the staff got swamped, forgot to give us our order and left 15+ people standing up front waiting on food that never seemed to be coming. Hopefully they get on the ball because the charm of fast-food is lost when it's not fast.

I stopped in here while searching for a quick bite while on a road trip. The woman at the register was funny and doing a good job of dealing with the long line that formed just before we arrived. I can see how someone expecting something other than a small town ice cream shop could think she was rude but I felt at home in the high speed, small kitchen atmosphere. Some of my favorite childhood memories are stopping in places like this on trips to the mountains with my family. Don't come in here looking for high class, come in here for a quick lunch and some tasty ice cream. Malt Shoppe is the small town equivalent of Dairy Queen and if you're small town savvy you'll notice the striking resemblance to a Dairy King. I was pretty happy about the option to get a butterscotch milkshake and jumped on it. It was awesome! My fiance said the chocolate shake was pretty typical but great after being in the car eating Cheetos and drinking Gatorade for three days. We each had a 1/4 lb. burger and split a basket of fries. I do love waffle cut fries so that made me happy. I ended up spending a little more money than I wanted to but I had an overall good experience. For me, the nostalgia and the memories made up for the short comings.

I would recommend going an hour somewhere else to get an average ice cream cone. The wait was 20 minutes which we expected and we told the cashier (who also made the malts) our order and waited another 15 minutes, which we also expected after the slow pace entrance into the register. I got a chocolate malt and it tasted like vanilla and a shot of Hershey's chocolate sauce pumped into it. The place looks like something from the 1990s and hasn't been updated since. Their hours are strange being that they close at 9pm on a Friday night! The employee's attitudes are anything but enjoyable and they have no uniform or dress code. Overall, I would rather spend my money buying a cheap souvenir or going to an amazing restaurant in town, such as Kipp's or Riff Raff or Alley House!

This place is not the greatest. I have been regretting lunch for the past 8 hours. I had the burger with american cheese. I was hoping for a fresh meaty burger with melted cheese, but what I got was something else: dry bread, frozen meat patty heated up, cheese not melted at all (and tasted old, if that's even possible). The chocolate malt had a LOT of chocolate in it. They made it too rich compared to EVERY other malt I've ever had. Just avoid this place. Even the woman at the counter had a big mouth, and was rude and condescending. It was her personality, but it doesn't work too well on tourists that aren't from Pagosa Springs.

This place is a local favorite! I used to come here all the time after school and it's still just as delicious as I remember. Their burgers are amazing, especially if you add the green chilies, and I LOVE their waffle fries (but sometimes you gotta add some extra salt). I mainly come here for their shakes & malts though, because they are to die for! This place gets pretty crowded in the summer, so sometimes you gotta wait in line to order. But they have some awesome seating outside, with giant tables right next to the river! The last time I was there I got a large coffee & peanut butter malt! Super filling but sooo worth it! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I don't know if it's just the nostalgia I get when I come here, but regardless, this place is a MUST TRY if you're in Pagosa.

Nasty restaurant, unfriendly service and it's just soft serve... They have seating outside by the river, that's something positive!

Two and a half stars. Green chili had a little meat in it, but two doubles of saltines didn't hide its otherwise watery texture beneath its loaded top layer. Corn dog was fine, burger bun was nicely toasted. I went with the sourdough option on my grilled ham & cheese, over white, wheat, rye alternatives. Thinly carved meat was a touch dry, white and yellow cheddars, not too much butter. The malts are worth getting (coffee especially) but the redeeming factor of the food is in its affordability.

I had the 1/4 lb single patty burger. This is what I would call an old fashioned burger, the fries were a little crunchy. They have a wide variety of food on their menu other than just burger and fries! It's a quaint shop with good food, not to mention the malts!! The ice cream is AMAZING!

I avoid this place when I'm wanting to feel healthy, but it's the place to be if you're looking for a cheap, greasy diner meal. The burgers are terrible, the cheese is American, and the bread is white... which is sometimes just what you need. I like this place for breakfast with my daughter when I don't feel like cooking. If you want a quick American meal, you may as well get your industry-raised eggs and antibiotic-filled bacon grilled fresh versus from a McDonald's bag. I like ordering a veggie & green chili omelette, and eating my daughter's left-over scraps of french toast. Oh, and their shakes are old fashioned and amazing. I like getting caramel with any berry flavor, or banana chocolate. YUM! Their soft-serve ice cream cones are too big for me! P.S. Andrea, the short, loud waitress, is fabulous.

Personnel rude. Unsanitary restaurant ...had to wash my hands after leaving. Bathrooms old and dirty. Food so-so. Not ever going back

Although the cashier had several large hickies on her neck the service we received was very friendly and casual. This is the best place to go when you are heart broken and just need a heart attack on a cone, but beware the large is too small ;)

Any place that still knows the difference between a shake and a malt deserves a higher Yelp rating in my book. It was also a good thing that I walked here and back from downtown to work off the calories. The Malt Shoppe is a very Mom and Pop place, and very popular based on the line. What I particularly enjoyed (besides my chocolate malt) was the friendly counter staff and how they kindly and respectfully served the wide variety of people who wanted to enjoy their Sunday afternoon with some ice cream. Some customers were slower and more indecisive than others, but everyone like me left happy.

Cheap frozen food. Not worth it. Skip. Avoid.

Ate here twice last week, while in Pagosa Springs, CO. The 1/4lb cheeseburger was pretty dang good & the banana malt tastes like Banana Cream Pie. (yum!) I hardly ever like banana flavored things, either. It was hopping both times we went, but the long line didn't take too long to get through. I took off a star for cleanliness: We had to clean our own table both times, because any empty table, if you could find one, was dirty. (yuck!) One of the ladies who works there came out to clean up & she had crusty stuff all over the front of her shirt from working in the kitchen...that's what APRONS were made for. There aren't too many options in Pagosa, so I'm sure we'll eat there again, next time we're around...just wish it were cleaner.

Biggest, tastiest banana split I've ever had! This is a fun little ice cream shop with fast and friendly service.

Pretty much like Burger King. But way more packed and dirtier. The burger was SO thin, only one small slice of tomato and two pickle slices, the only sauce they offer is Thousand Island dressing in a packet, thrown on the plate. We waited over 30 minutes for our food because it was so packed (that should be a good sign, right?) but it was totally BLAH. Their burgers are the cheapo ones that you can buy in a big frozen stack. The shake was cheap vanilla ice cream with Hershey's chocolate- McDonald's are better! Our table was so dirty, the garbage was overflowing, pretty disappointing for a place that had been recommended to us by a friend and was so busy we thought it HAD to be great!

Stepped inside and we couldn't smell any fresh food being made. We found out why when our food came. Their burger patties were prepackaged and tasted as such. I expected a place with this name to have fresh made patties and good home cooking from mom and pop. I did try their strawberry malt. THAT is worth stopping for and is the only reason I did not give it 1 star. My daughter had the chicken fingers--they tasted ok, but were overly breaded. The Mrs. had an order of onion rings. They tasted ok, and were quite a rip-off for the 7 onion rings you get. If you're looking for a great burger and fries type of place, this isn't it. Look elsewhere...keep on moving. Our total was $34.97 for 2 adults and 2 kids meals. It is definitely not a value place. For a little over half that amount, the Sonic drive-in on the west side of town is much better. By the way, they had everything a-la-cart.....no combos. On a final note, both my wife and I asked for no cheese on our burger, and sure enough, we had cheese on them. We waited quite a while to get our order, so we didn't bother to ask them to correct this mistake.

Yeah, so if you want to get away from the main stream, check this place out. It's like a mom-n-pop version of Dairy Queen. Good shakes, onion rings, burgers, etc. Not much more to say. A solid choice if your arteries are feeling too clear. And dining on the deck out back is nice...

I loved the vibe here. Stopped off while driving back to CA, and got a burger w/ fries, no malt. Good food, but not for everyone. Would drop in again.

This is an Oasis on the drive I would take from Santa Fe to Durango. Great little place to stop, get a malt and some fast food. Malts are super tasty and definitely worth the stop. And if you are ever going to meet someone here, don't make them wait 6 hours for you. While The Malt Shoppe is a nice place to relax from the road on a warm day, I can't imagine six hours here is too much fun when you are waiting for someone.

The malt shoppe is a great spot to go in Pagosa downtown for breakfast and lunch. I love their Philly Steak and the waffle fries are the best in town. Malts are a great treat here. I have gotten great service by the employees and appreciate the great economy of the food for a resort-type town like Pagosa.
