Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Loved the dinner here: Chicken mole with black beans and rice, sliced avocado extra ($2.25) worth every penny. (15$ for the pollo) Hubby had camarones a la plancha. ($16~) also delicious butterflied shrimp with grilled mushrooms and he subbed black beans also. His came with guacamole which was made just right. Starter chips were good with a very good salsa and another wonderful bowl of pickled cabbage lightly spiced with green chilies and pico de gallo. Staff was outstanding from the nice gentleman who greeted us and didn't bat an eye when we asked to be moved to the other side of the small dining room with high booths because two tables both had impatient toddlers who were starting to murmur prior to erupting as we were seated. Parents on one table were allowing the "fork on porcelain plate" (a steady drumming) distraction. No musical aptitude unfortunately. The waitress Belen was all smiles and always attentive. Total bill was $36. Worth every penny.

I was honestly very surprised by El Tapatio. My boyfriend and I were heading on our way out of town (after he had finished up a round of golf and was h.u.n.g.r.y.) so I pulled this up on Yelp and it had decent reviews/was easy to get to. I ended up getting what a pretty great combination plate. I got a crispy chile relleno and a bean and beef tostada. All of it came with a salad/pico combination that was very tasty. My boyfriend got a burrito and it was jam packed full of pork! He was very happy. The only chang I wished for on my dish were black beans instead of refried beans, and my boyfriend had wished there was some green chile on the inside of his burrito. We also split a margarita. We asked and they put some orange liqour in the marg, which made it extra tasty.

Food: Amazing! I got the vegetarian super burrito and it blew me away! Margaritas: HUGE!!! I got the house Cadillac Marg and could barely finish it. Chips and salsa, plus house dip: Amazing! Chips had a toasted taste and I had to ask for a second batch. With all of that said... Terrible service. I waited my whole meal for my waiter to bring me a glass of water. He was too busy tending to the table of three men on the patio blowing smoke from their 'cigs' in another parties direction. I watched them get numerous tequila shots my whole meal as I simply waited for my water. He never once stopped by my table during the meal. Long story short: good food, Margs are top-notch in size and alcohol content, chips and salsa are great. Do not come here if you plan to be seated quickly and taken care of as a customer.
(3)Hal R.
I have visited this place a couple times and wasn't blown away by much. The salsa is bland and the entrees are just ok. The service is probably the best part of the place. Orders are always fast and correct in my experience. It is a nice cheap change up from going downtown, but the quality of lacking in a few different areas. It's definitely better than one of its competitors that I have had the pleasure of eating at, but I have a higher standard for Mexican food.

My FAVORITE Mexican food restaurant! And I've eaten at as many Mexican places as possible across Colorado, New Mexico, California, Texas and Oklahoma... Both the Asada and Carnitas tacos are amazing... Squeeze the lime on them and top with some of the sauce they bring out. The Carne Asada plate is the best I've had! Anywhere. Ever. The best!!! The combo plate with a tamale and a soft chile rellino is awesome. Tell them to put red sauce on the rellino and green chile on the tamale or they will put red on both. Much better with green on the tamale :) I'm not big on the rice and beans at most places but they are absolutely perfect here! Mix them together a bit, pour some of the incredible salsa on top and eat with chips. Mmmmmm.... I've just finished my plate as I'm writing this and I'm already looking forward to my next visit!!!!! Enjoy! :)

Just fabulous! Shredded beef taco salad, chicken enchiladas, beef & chicken fajitas for 2& food left. Marvelous MEXICAN FLAIR.
(5)C M.
Not good at all ! The only reason I give it a one is because the server was nice !!!!
(1)Glenda H.
I consider myself a connoisseur of Mexican food. There are many places to choose from in GJ. El Tapatio is my absolute FAVORITE! Huge delicious reasonably priced dinners that can be taken home and enjoyed the next day too! Love their salsas!
(5)Lynn S.
So, we've been twice. Filthy both times, peering into kitchen and restrooms. Yuck. Food is typical GJ Mexican food. Canned and frozen, bland sauces, greasy and not fresh. We never ever eat here if we can help it. I've also had Mexican food across the U.S. and several other countries. This is way below par IMHO.

Really enjoyed our lunch there. Service was top notch. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. The manager turned on a space heater when we sat down not far from the door. So we were nice and warm. I had the carne asada. This was a skirt steak - very thin. It was SO flavorful - it seemed to have been marinated and was tender. It was a big piece, but I had no trouble eating it all. The beans were creamy and tasted home cooked, which I appreciate! This is a little thing - but it shows their deep level of care. I had asked for corn tortillas and my husband wanted flour tortillas. They brought one straw basket. I thought maybe we got all of one kind. But - no - they had interlaced them (one corn, one flour, one corn, one flour, one corn, one flour). Such a nice touch. I got mine, and my husband's was up next. As everyone seems to agree - the cabbage salsa is excellent. It was great on chips, but a little dab on a bite of beans or steak really made them sing!

We stopped here on our way back from Telluride to Denver. After reading the reviews, we were excited to try this place. We were, however, disappointed. The service was extremely slow, they forgot to bring out our guacamole and ended up getting it mid-meal. The chicken had curious bits of gristle and was very unappetizing. My friend had the seafood enchilada with imitation crab and real shrimp. The crab was extremely fishy and the sauce drizzled over the top was bland and not good. The only good thing about this place is the guacamole was delicious and they had great iced tea. Other than that, not impressed and would not recommend.
(1)AC L.
I had the chipotle enchiladas and they were good. Not as spicy as i thought it would be but it did hit me later. My coworker had the chicken burrito and she said it was awesome! I'll have to come back to try the carnitas! I would recommend it to a friend.
(4)Cassie G.
I'm not sure Yelp has ever steered me wrong, but it was bound to happen and tonight was the night. Service was curt, guac was forgotten, beef taco order was wrong, fish tacos were greasy. On a positive note, enjoyed the chicken fajitas, salsas and house margs. With so much Mexican food in town, not sure I'd come back. I'm hoping it was just an off night.
(2)Christian P.
We went there for lunch on our way to Keystone Colorado. It was quite the treat. I enjoyed the beef quesadillas and my friend savored the chipotle chicken. Both meals were outstanding!!!
(5)Brett M.
We were visiting from the east coast. This is some of the best Mexican food I have had. The chips and salsa were warm the salsa had just the right a lit of kick. I had a burrito, a huge amount of food and every nite was great. Awesome place. Check out there tequila selection.
(5)Suzette B.
Fantastic food!! Service was a little slow when first seated - waited a bit for water and drinks. Would for sure go back next time in Grand Junction.
(4)J G.
Great food terrible service got sat outside and was completely ignored finally had to track down someone to get some drinks then was ignored until we finally left not coming back that's for sure.
(1)Sarah A.
Mexican food has always been my favorite. I have tried every restaurant around me. Finally I decided to try El Tapatio and it is the best Mexican food I have ever had!! The service is great too! Everyone should try this restaurant at least once!!
(5)Christine C.
LOVED the cabbage salsa; had 2 bowls. The Tostado de Pulpo (octopus) very, very good and quite unique. Adobado Taco was good; not great. Service was excellent; waitress was friendly and food came out promptly. Would definitely recommend this place.
(4)Eric A.
Very good! The carnitas were excellent and the margaritas were tasty. I thought the services was quick and attentive as well.
(5)Steve E.
Oh my gosh... I grew up in Southern California with my girl... we took a road trip with friends to Grand Junction on their anniversary.... to do some wine tasting and happened to stumble upon this place after a search on Google... There are very few places that can make Almojo de Ajo the way I used to get it in TJ (Tijuana) and the other places close to the border... but this is the closest that I have found. Living in Utah... but traveling to GJ twice a year... I have FOUND my favorite Mexican restaurant that makes my favorite dish... Stacy asked me to edit this... they have a great Italian margarita too...
(5)David M.
Went in for lunch with dad and had the burrito lunch special. While not fancy, it was decent for 6.95 . I was hoping for a bit more spice but it wasn't bad. the tables , while a bit touristy, were kinda cool.
(3)Julia J.
Ok-tasting food. Expected more based on reviews. Though within a half an hour my guests and I all had stomach-aches that lasted into the wee hours of the night. Customer service left much to be desired. We saw our server for our order, a fast stop after the first bite and then we only saw her backside as she was chatting it up with the table across from us for the rest of our meal. The manager brought us the check which was not split as requested. Would not recommend.
(2)Carol T.
Worst Mexican food I have ever had. Chili rellanos were burnt on the ends and raw in the middle. I won't be back
(1)Gina T.
This is my probably my favorite Mexican place in town. It's food is much more authentic than at a lot of the other places and their margaritas are strong and fresh. Service is always really fast and friendly, and they're usually moderately busy but I've never had to wait for a table. The prices are great and portions are enormous! Decor is Mexican but not overwhelming, and they even have a patio. They always play traditional Mexican music and I love the cabbage salsa stuff they bring with your chips and salsa. Delicious!
(4)Leah P.
Whoa was I surprised by this place! I went in expecting run-of-the-mill Mexican, but this place really steps it up a notch. I had enchiladas that were possibly the most flavorful I have ever had. I didn't even eat much of my rice and beans because I wanted to save room so I could eat all of them! The standard-issue chips and salsa were very addicting, the salsa seemed homemade. The margaritas were strong also. It was a little more expensive that I normally pay for a Mexican place, but I think it was worth it. Quick service and delicious food makes this place a must-see for Grand Junction.
(4)Alicia J.
We love eating here! The food is always great and the prices are fair especially for the quality and portion size. The service can be hit or miss but overall a great place!
(5)Chris R.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm. A friend and I came through town a few weeks ago.I was very happy with my meal. We both were. I ordered carne tacos, with rice and beans. For drink I had a Patron margarita. The drink very good and was poured heavy (which I like.) The tacos were not bad, but I have had better. Now onto the rice and beans... THESE. wow. I want just a plate of rice and beans next time. Great job guys! I will come back when I am in town.
(4)Chip M.
Fantastic Fajitas and cabbage salsa was unique, light and tasty! Great find based on other Yelp reviews.
(5)Cristina G.
Can I tell you....this was a big surprise! Thanks Yelp! For another good recommendation. El Tapatio is pretty darn authentic Mexican in Grand junction. Cute decor, good service, good food and awesome margaritas! Definitely a hit in my book!
(4)Scott S.
Great atmosphere. good food. nice litte restaurant. Great selection in Tequlia. I had the steak burrito with 3 different sauces.
(4)Christi R.
For a town with a lot of mediocre Mexican restaurants, El Tapatio really stands out. Fresh ingredients, good flavor, fast, friendly service and a good margarita. Try the asada tacos! Quick lunches and good for the kids too.
(4)Jessica C.
Best strawberry daiquiris
(5)Don M.
Fantastic find on this road trip. Great heat to the hot green chile, rellenos were awesome and the staff here is wonderful. Wish I lived closer to visit regularly. Muy Bien!
(5)Dondi B.
Absolutely the best Mexican food I've ever had; my bf Dave, the much more critical critic of this genre, was delighted as well. My steak fajitas were done in a delectable marinade and served with DELICIOUS Spanish rice and a bunch of other sides I gave to Dave because they all contained tomatoes, which I am not fond of (& the restaurant staff was kind enough to leave off my fajitas). LOVED the cabbage salsa-salsa with so few tomatoes I could avoid or not taste them, yay!-& homemade chipd. My house margarita was dynamite. Dave's campengenna (sp?) Or seafood cocktail was brimming with octopus, shrimp & abalone; he LOVED it & was happy to finish my guacamole, salsas, pico, & other sides. A fantastic stop for dinner on a long trip from Long Beach, CA back home to Fort Collins (biz trip)...five huge stars for sure. Can't wait til we're in Grand Junction again to enjoy more of the delicious & very nicely-priced fare.
(5)Nick B.
Great food. The price was $15+ for most plates. I got a sense from the reviews that it was less, but not true. Worth a stop, but not a long drive.
(4)Merv F.
Went to El Tapatio for dinner based on Yelp reviews. Was not disappointed. I had the Chile Verde, pork in a green chile sauce and was great. Huge plate! Pam had the special tacos and she raved about them. One beef and one pork. Interesting all the meat in our meals were cubed as apposed to pulled, as in pulled beef or pulled pork. Service was excellent and our waitress was not shy about telling us what is good or not.
(4)Brad S.
Tapatio's is evidence that even as far north as Grand Junction there can be some decent Mexican food. I was only passing through, and can barely remember what I ate that day, but that's more of the effect of the extraordinary amount of driving than a testament to the food itself. Because the food was good - I think it was one of the signature combo meals, and there may be a tostada involved, but I do remember they gave me a squeeze tube full of salsa, and by the end of the meal, it was only half full. And isn't that the most important thing of all?
(4)Sarah Ann B.
My favorite place to sit down with a margarita (they always seem to be a little on the stout side, but I'm certainly okay with that) and munch on some great mexican food. Both the GeeJ and Fruita locations sport the same quality and flavor. To begin your excellent dining experience, their salsas are better than great. They're not just filler by any means, they actually have a lot going on. Personally I could eat just about anything on the menu and be ridiculously happy, but most of the time, if I'm not sharing my plate, I want to stay on a bit of a budget. To do that, I generally order an array of different tacos (that are all superbly amazing) with a side of rice and beans, even still, I end up with left overs. Their more signature platters can be a bit on the pricy side, but it's pretty worth it. Just grab someone to share with and get that fiesta groove goin'. p.s. They even have a drive-thru window for their GeeJ location.
(4)Natalie P.
Tacos!! Mmmmm!!! El Tapatio's is the best place for Mexican food in GJ, as far as I am concerned... I love their ground beef tacos and rice; and their chips and salsa are top notch! And the people who work there are super friendly and helpful. Yay El Taps!
(4)Lynda T.
Me and a friend visited this restaurant last weekend while staying in Grand Junction. The food was very authentic and delicious, and the portions were large. We had a "handmade" Margarita on the rocks, which was not from a mix. It was delicious and refreshing. For dinner, we both had the pork enchiladas with green sauce, rice and beans. I would eat there all the time if I lived there.
(5)B Q.
Good food, but not great by any stretch. Quite spendy for what you receive. Extremely shoddy, surly service. I guess they were doing me a favor by serving me food. Unpleasant. I won't be back.
(2)Scott B.
This is the second time I've been here, ordered differently each time and both times it was Fantastic! I'm from a primarily Mexican town and the food here is two bars above the best we have to offer! Great margarita and prompt service. Treat yourself to el Tapatio!
(5)Jessica A.
So delicious! Their portions are pretty large so I can have leftovers once and sometimes twice. They have a ridiculously long list of tequilas on hand if you're in the mood for a margarita - I've never seen such a long list at a Mexican restaurant! Also, to start your meal off, they bring complimentary chips and two different salsas. The traditional tomato salsa is very tasty and not too hot; the other salsa is made of tomatoes, shredded cabbage, jalapenos, and some type of liquid - probably lime? It's my favorite. I can't get enough of it! My favorite entree is the enchiladas la crema - which is a creamy tomato sauce on chicken enchiladas. They serve most entrees with a delicious cabbage slaw, refried beans, and Spanish rice - which are all really tasty. Their menu is quite extensive, here's a link: tapatiorestaurants.com/m… although that doesn't appear to be up-to-date since my entree isn't on there and the cheese dip is now jokingly called "cheese deep." Ha, try not to laugh when you order it - it's a delicious queso blanco. Give it a try! We're from Texas and after spending the summer in Denver we were pretty disappointed in Mexican food, but this place has turned out to be not only the best in Grand Junction and Colorado, but quite possibly the best I've ever had. The desserts always look ridiculously awesome, but I'm always way too stuffed to dream of ordering it...
(5)Jon A.
I think this would have been 3.5 stars except that we had a rather taciturn waiter, because the food and drink was really pretty good. Ambience was nice, not fancy but not grungy. The $6.50 house margs completely trounced the $10+ margs we had at Dos Hombres earlier in the week. My chipotle chicken burritto was not too shabby and my wife's fish tacos were reportedly not bad (although still not hitting the spot like those that our former fave, Juanita's in Boulder used to offer). Not yet feeling the 4-5 star love that other reviewers are, but we'd definitely go back.
(3)Patrick B.
Ok, this was the best Mexican Food I've had in quite a while. Not over cheesed or greasy. Very well prepared and the wait staff was terrific. I will definitely come here again when back in town. So many items to order from and the all look great. Try the mole sauce. Sounds weird and its sweet. But really good. If you want Mexican, come here first.
(5)Jason J.
I'm not a huge Mexican food fan. I'm a relative newbie to the food-genre. That style of cuisine is not big where I'm from (Maine) so my immersion into its cheesey/beany/ricey goodness has been slow and I've been admittedly hesitant about it. I am hesitant no longer after an awesome trip to El Tapatio (tap-ah-tee-oh.) When we pulled up, I was worried because the joint actually had a drive-through. But hey, i thought, when in Rome! You can always tell how a mexican restaurant will be based on their salsa...this experience started scrumtralescently. I had a "tapatio grande" which was...grande. Choose three entree items. I went chile relleno, chalupa and an enchilada. DELICIOUS. The lady had a mole burrito, which she loved top to bottom and side to side. The margaritas were also delicious! Just a great experience, fun decor, great people working and eating, just a fun time all around. It came highly recommended by a local and I can totally understand why. If you're in Grand Junction, go!
(5)Mary B.
Food was marginal. My chimichanga with shredded beef was tough. Service was slow.
(1)Brock S.
This was by far the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Poor quality ingredients that are over cooked and then drowned in oil, enchilada sauce, and cheese. The margaritas tasted like they were made with lime-aid. This is a bad bad place :(
(1)Kristina Y.
The ambiance was definitely more authentic than most Mexican restaurant chains. The carne asada was excellent. Very tasty & carne asada is my favorite Mexican dish. The margaritas are great for the price. My husbands meal, the tapatio grande (3 item combo platter) was large but was not very seasoned. The refried beans were fairly bland but the rice was tasty enough. The service, however, was subpar. The server wasn't quick to respond and was slow to provide refills.
(3)Kevin S.
Huge news! El Tap has redecorated! See photos. It was packed last night (Good Friday) and they REALLY need to find a way to expand their parking lot. Maybe they could buy the Arby's next door and tear it down. I tried one of the $5.99 lunch specials, and it was great. My friend had a vegetarian meal and was very pleased. They do pescado dorado correctly here. They actually had Camarones Mojo de Ajo (shrimp in garlic sauce) as a $5.99 lunch special the other day. That's insane for that price. It was delicious.
(5)Dan O.
Delicious! The best authentic Mexican food I've had that I can remember! And the guacamole was to die for!
(5)Brad B.
Carnegie Asada was excellent, very tender. Service hick and friendly. Not a fan of booths, but was worth it
(4)J M.
I'm LA, making me an authority on Mexican food :) I had the three enchilada meal.... There was alot of meat but the sauces were terrible. Specifically the cheese sauce tasted like Mac n cheese powder that had been watered down. Nuff said. The staff were clean and nice and the decor was pretty cool. But those were some damn expensive enchiladas , 16 dollars!!!
(2)Bill H.
Looking for excellent Mexican food in Grand Junction. Even though I am from Texas, I needed a Mexican fix after travelling to Grand Junction. What a great surprise! Fresh homemade salsa plus an unusual cabbage salsa were complementary. They had a large selection of Mexican seafood dishes. The portions were very large and the quality was high. I will be back the next time I travel to Grand Junction. Its on the meal plan. It helps to check Yelp before I try new place.
(4)Deanne G.
HUGE plates filled with more than enough to eat only at the resteraunt!!! The food is absolutely delicious and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. But, what really keeps me coming back is the margaritas! They are reasonably priced for the size, and they are quite strong as well! I find myself eating 2 sometimes even 3 bowls of chips and salsa before my meal even arrives because they are so dang addicting!! They serve the HOMEMADE chips warm and toasty, and their salsa is to die for!! The BEST Mexican food resteraunt in Grand Junction by a long shot!!!
(5)Zoe L.
Found this place while on a roadtrip from California (the master state of authentic Mexican food). Delicious meal...and great service to match. Highly recommend, it was an excellent surprise in the middle if Colorado!
(5)TJ Lee W.
I don't even like mexican, but this place has always been great. You have to try two things for sure. One, the chicken taquitos, and two, the unusual cabbage salsa that they give you with chips. I still crave it. Another great thing about this place is the seating. Tall backed boothes give each party a slightly secluded feel which is a definite plus. If I'm in Grand Junction, this is one of only three places I would choose to eat, and I've had about everything in that town.
(4)Dean T.
It's good.
(4)Vivian U.
Really good Mexican food, though I think the quality is starting to slide a bit. When I first moved to Junction last year, the food was great, I thought. Around May when I went there, the pescado meal l I always get was quite different from the norm. The taste was different, the sauce looked and tasted different. I am honestly not sure what happened, but I tried it once more and was disappointed enough that I decided to stop going there.
(3)Geordy O.
Had vegetarian fare. It was oily but at least it was there. Nice to the kids.
(4)Steve A.
Used Yelp to find this place; just in town for the night. Margaritas... Awesome. If you only like the taste of the mix, these are not for u. Refried beans on most plates... ehhh. Crispy Chile Rellenos... Money! Thanks Yelp
(4)Pierce S.
Excellent family run restaurant. So-so location surrounded by fast food on each side but this is a winner. Nice feeling inside with good Mexican decorations, high backed booths and very . The margaritas are good sized, tasty and fairly strong. Excellent presentation. Chicken fajitas were large enough to feet two people. Chips were fresh with too mild salsa. Excellent staff. Came back several times to check on our meals. Restaurant and restrooms clean. Good off street parking. A very popular restaurant. Good spot to spend an evening at. About a couple $ more than I like to pay but worth it. Will be back next time in town.
(4)Krista E.
We we're looking for some margaritas to end our vacation :) El Tapatio had great marstirtas and wonderful food! I'm a vegetarian and luckily they had a good list of vege options!! My dad had the pork tacos and loved them!
(4)Christina V.
The food here is so good! You actually feel like you are in Mexico when you are eating in this restaurant. The beer glasses are ice cold, have a salted rim and and nice chunk of lime. The salsa is fresh and delicious served with fresh, hot chips. There are so many things to choose from it is almost overwhelming but it is all so good it is hard to go wrong. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Jackie H.
Have a house margarita and the chicken mole. It's amazing. But check the bill, one time there was an extra meal on ours... otherwise, every time we go its great.
(5)Brandon M.
Great lunch taco specials, have the best pork tacos around! If you like tripe, tongue and other non typical meats...their tacos with these meats are worth a shot if you're daring enough
(4)Mocking J.
We went at lunch to the central G Jcn location, ended up taking out as we were in the midst of a road trip. Good priced burrito, the best vegetarian burrito we ever had: rice & beans on side only, burrito filled with a small amt cheese, mostly tasty grilled veggies like broccoli, mushrooms, onions. Yum! Great salsas, and very friendly people!
(5)Liz R.
I honestly love this place because you can get authentic as well as traditional selections. I love their carne asada, and their burritos never fail to please. Their salsa is great, and their margaritas always leave me a bit tanked but happy. The service here is wonderful, and they love when you order in Spanish. This is my go-to Mexican restaurant.
