There is nothing about this restaurant that isn't top-notch - our server Nolan was attentive but didn't hover, the presentation beautiful, and the elk was outstanding. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone desiring a special evening complete with great ambience.

I thought this place was good but not great. The service was good. I was just not wowed by the menu. For the prices I expect a tiny bit more creativity. The desert choices were not interesting either. But overall if you want a decent meal with a little above average service go here. The building is neat and the decor is very Victorian. I don't have a complaint and I do think it is better than other places on that street. I would like to give 3.5 stars but can't.

Unique atmosphere with interesting decor. We ordered Cannonball wine which was good. For dinner I ordered the peppered steak Herbert which was good. My boyfriend ordered the special which was a steak with some sort of fig sauce. He enjoyed it a lot. For dessert we ordered bananas fosters which was so amazing. They prepare it for you right in front of your table. This was the best part of the night. Service was mediocre- could've been better especially since this is a pricier place.
Bad food, served slowly, for too high a price, by awkward staff. We tried to go to Ken and Sue's restaurant first, but the place was packed, and we would have needed to wait an hour for a table. So we tried Mahogany Grille. What a contrast! Almost no one was there. What did everyone else know? Bad food, served slowly, for too high a price, by awkward staff. But your great grandmother will LOVE the place.

My wife and I had a terrific meal. We ordered lamb and elk. Both were terrific. The salads were top notch also. The service and atmosphere were excellent. The wine selection was broad, and I appreciated the designation of favorites. I travel a lot and (alas) eat out all the time. This restaurant was easily in the top two percent.

Very nice place to have dinner. I had prime rib and my wife had a lamb dish. We shared a wonderful piece of raspberry pie for desert. Service was very good and my water glass never ran empty which for a tired tourist is important.

Had the Filet Mignon and it was one of the BEST I've ever had!!! Great dining experience! :)
Just had early New Years Eve dinner. The good news-food was excellent. The bad news-it took 15 minutes for a waiter to show up. We had to ask where our waiter was to get the ordering process started. The really bad news-desert was part of the fixed menu, and only one was delivered to the table for my wife and I. When we asked the waiter where the other was, we were told if two people were dining, only one desert per table. How stupid do they think their customers are? We had to get the waiter to bring a copy of the printed menu to the manager to get a second desert. Doubt that we will ever be back.

Ambience is beautiful! Seems like everyone who works here is 16, didn't see an adult who was in charge keeping the place together and I was there for two hours. If you're trying to get in and out, don't come here. The service is great but the food is slow. The wine list is extensive, I ordered the Syrah and Pinot noir by the glass, both very lovely. Bread with accompanied olive dipping sauce is amazing! The dipping sauce is the best thing we ate and it's complimentary! Fondue for appetizer was ok, it's basically melted cheese in a bread bowl, nothing to write home about. House salad, is also just OK. Ribeye was dry, and not worth $40 dollars! Medium rare had a brown center but I didn't want to wait for another so I ate it. I will never eat here again, way too over priced! I don't mind spending $40 on a steak but when I do I EXPECT IT TO BE AMAZING! I could have gotten the same steak at TGIF's and it would have been better.

We totally enjoyed dining at the Mahogany Grille! The menu is extensive. The wine list is fabulous. I had the peppered beef tenderloin which was so tender & flavorful but exceeding that was the elk tenderloin! My son had the rib eye which was cooked perfectly! Good service, friendly & professional staff.

This was a great spot. Super romantic, great atmosphere, impressive menu and my steak was cooked beautifully. They have a great wine selection and definitely save room for dessert. Its a pricey establishment, so be prepared to spend, but the experience, food, and wine is worth it. Service was a little off, almost awkward (and not the greatest menu knowledge) for such a nice place, but I could tell it was a busy dinner rush for them. Ill come back here again.

Very disappointing. One person at the table of 6 liked their entree, the salad was wilted and had very little other than lettuce, they couldn't seat us until a half hour after our res time (it was NYE otherwise I can't imagine they r usually that busy), they bought us a round of drinks only after we complained of the wait otherwise they acted like it was too bad, the food was described as "inedible", "I only ate any Bc I was starved", "clearly prepared at 5 and served at 930", the $45 pp was supposed to include dessert pp but they only brought us one per couple. I had been here years ago and enjoyed the meal - will not go back especially since Durango is teeming with great restaurants.

A very nice restaurant with very good food. We had dinner here while staying at the hotel this restaurant is located in, the Strater, our first night, as well as breakfast the next two mornings. The breakfast buffet has pretty much what one would expect, and it's not much different than anyone else's, except for the posole, which was quite good. The Denver omelet I decided to try the second breakfast was better than average. The dinner we had was very good, I had the elk, which is unusual for me as I'm not much for game. It was well prepared, and I think those that like elk would like it, but it wasn't to my taste. My wife had fish, which was very good. The sides and presentation were both quite good, and the dessert was really good: A brownie with a scoop of ice cream. We heard the people at the next table express their approval of the bananas Foster. We would definitely return the next time we're in town.

Posh and urbane in this throw back western mining town was an unexpected delight. The beautiful space insdie th historic Statler Hotel has been lovlingly adorned with some rather recoco millwork and stained glass sky lights, though I found most ot fhe artwork to be overdone and lacking in harmony with the rest of the pace. Fror appetizer, I had a sausage trio: finely crafted artisnal sausages with complementing sauces. A triumph! My wife had roasted fall squashes that were roboust and perfectly cooked. I had a pepper steak Herbert , with an interesting sweet twist. Tender perfection, my wife had Elk tenderloin, ad terriffic and somewhat exotic dish that had her writhing in pelasure at every bite. It was fairly erotic, frankly. The staff was cordial but professional, prompt and polished. Don't mss the chance to dine here if you findy ourself in Durango!

This restaurant is outstanding. We have the lump crab stuffed poblano pepper, it was a melody of flavors, very complex and a wonderful dish. The service was excellent, The Decor was nostalgic and the entire evening was very enjoyable. For elegant dining it is hard to beat the Mahogany grill.

Great food and an awesome wine list! I had the flat iron steak which was delicious. My husband had the pepper steak and he said it was a little sweet for him- the steak has a mango sauce. This restaurant is in a historic building - Strater Hotel- that is very charming.
This place does not disappoint! Excellent service and the menu has so many great choices. In our group of four everyone loved what they ordered. I had the butternut squash cannelloni which I recommend and the jalepeno bacon wrapped bison was amazing as well. We stopped next door to their bar The Office and enjoyed a few drinks and a great vibe. We will be back to both on our next visit!

As regular diners at The Mahogany Grill we were disappointed with last nights visit. The food was very good as always but the service left a lot to be desired. We were seated promptly and menses were given to us but it was a long wait to place our order and an even longer wait for t.he food to arrive. We had to ask for bread and water several times and had a long wait to get both. They were very prompt when it came to pushing cocktails. I understand it was a busy night but a restaurant has an obligation to have proper staffing.

WOW. This place was amazing! My boyfriend and I had the beef filet with peppercorn mango chutney. It was hands down the best filet I have ever had! The chutney was phenomenal, the meat was cooked to perfection, the potatoes & veggies were delicious, & the chocolate avalanche dessert was divine! I had the mini avalanche due to no room left after that amazing dinner. The historical feel & history of the building created a fantastic atmosphere. The staff was on top of their game- never had to ask for a refill or plates to be cleared and they were all so nice. I could gush about this place forever! If you're looking for the best food in town look no further! When you're visiting Durango you MUST have dinner here. All these 5 star reviews don't lie!

Usually restaurants in hotels are somewhat sketchy, but this one was outstanding. We got the name from a friend as a suggestion and were not disappointed. The food was excellent, the wine list very nice. Their might not be as many options as at other places in town for dinner, but what the chef is making is good. The Banana's Foster was too not be missed, as they rival the best places in New Orleans. The staff was great as well. They were warm and friendly, made great suggestions and small talk at the appropriate times.

This may be the best restaurant I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I were traveling out of town, and we tried the dinner for two. For $50 total we were bombarded (in the friendliest possible way) with delicious food and alcohol for an hour. As soon as we sat down we were both given Washington Apple shots for being new to the restaurant. The bottle of wine was very tasty, the soup was incredible, the complimentary bread was fantastic, the ice cream was amazing, the entree was mouth-watering, and the cake was very chocolaty and yummy. I cannot recommend this place more. The whole time I was astounded at the generous prices. I will definitely be going back he next time I'm in Durango.

Ate here as part of the Melodrama Theater dinner package. The restaurant was beautiful and perfectly decorated to fit Durango's western image. It sounded like they even were playing Sirius's Willie Station. The food was very good and as a treat we all got a free Hurricane Shooter. I got the trout and my boyfriend and mother got the steak. My mother isn't a huge steak fan but she enjoyed hers. Both steaks were cook perfectly and the portions were just right. Not like a huge steakhouse like Morton's, Gibsons, etc. We would have enjoyed more vegetables though. The weird thing is I am allergic to wheat, so when they brought out the wonderful humus and olive oil dip with bread at the start of the meal, I asked if they could please slice me some cucumber since I was allergic to the bread. I always ask this at restaurants when they offer some type of spread that goes on bread and the restaurants have always been so nice in providing me either with cucumber slices or even rice crackers. At the Mohogany Grille however, the server said they could do this but there would be a charge. I didn't really mind and it was only $1, but seriously? I have never had a restaurant give free bread to the table but not want to give me a few free cucumber slices b/c I can't eat the free bread. And BTW, the # of cucumber slices I got was about 8.

I had higher expectations for the food quality and service than we experienced. We had a nice table for four to celebrate a birthday and the wait service was spotty at best. The food was satisfactory but not particularly good. I had the flat iron steak special which was tough to chew with a crab sauce that tasted somewhat spoiled and mashed potatoes that were mushy. I ordered a glass of wine that was around 1/3 of a glass for $9. Looking over my review I should have given them a 1 star but I had been there several years ago when the food and service was better so gave them the benefit of the doubt this time.

Love love love this place. This wash second time eating here and both times were perfect. I like how they give you a little tasty taste of their signature drink for that night. Omg the crab dip was crack I swear almost as good as kalamata olive aioli. Yum yum their steaks are perfect and desserts are out of this world. The atmosphere takes you back in time. Just what you want when visiting durango.

We discovered the Mahogany Grille during our yearly visit to Durango. We have visited four years in a row, and each time, our anticipation and expectations grow to the point where we certainly be disappointed. . .yet we haven't. It remains our favorite restaurant ever. Each visit, we have been treated with utmost hospitality by the staff, and we've had knowledgeable and friendly waiters. The food, however, is the highlight of the evening. The elk tenderloin is one of the best meat dishes I've eaten anywhere in the United States. It's a pricey dish, but worth every penny and always perfectly prepared. Moist, tender, flavorful with a perfectly brazed exterior. On our last visit, my wife ordered a beef dish (I wish I could remember the name) that was arguably even better than the elk. It was extraordinary. The desserts are always exquisite (the Bananas Foster are amazing and a treat to see prepared at your table) The atmosphere is elegant and fun, and of course, the restaurant is attached to one of the great hotels of this part of the country. It makes for a wonderful night out. This restaurant is reserved for special nights out, as it is not cheap (especially with wine, salad and dessert), but we never regret the splurge and plan to return for our beloved visit. My highest rating.

Disappointing food and service. We went to dinner at Mahogany Grill based on the positive reviews and a good location. We loved the decor and setting in the historic Strater Hotel. Most of our food was good and we were generally satisfied. However, my wife's steak was overcooked and it took a long time to get it replaced. In fact, everyone else at the table was done when the new steak arrived. We suspect the new steak sat in the kitchen for a while, but it was tasty when served. Our waitress was average and honestly probably had too many tables to serve which resulted in her service being below par for a restaurant with a good reputation and price. We would likely try again when visiting Durango, expecting better service.

One word, disappointing. The food was mediocre bordering on bad, yet price point was high. I hate that. I don't mind paying for quality, so it is not a matter of being cheap. If you charge on average $30 per entrée, those entrées better be good. Some things that I did like: good service and historic decor. But since I was hungry and expecting a restaurant (not museum), that just doesn't cut it. Avoid.

We recently visited Durango with some friends who had never been there before. They suggested eating in the restaurant of the hotel we were staying in (Strater Hotel). It's been our experience that hotel restaurants generally aren't that great. Well, we ate some crow that night!! The staff greeted us in such a fashion to make us feel they were genuinely happy we were there. They made sure our water glasses were filled, as well as our adult beverages. Entrees are a bit on the pricey side, but we were all so pleased with our meals that became a non-issue. A light entrée of the Farmers Market Vegetable Pasta hit the spot for one in our party. There was a nice variety of locally grown veggies and plenty of them, served over a pasta and garlic beurre blanc. You just have to get rainbow trout if you're in Colorado - and this entrée did not disappoint. Beautifully presented with mixed greens and baby heirloom tomatoes, lightly pan-fried and delicious. A cider-brined pork chop with polenta and tomato & cherry chutney was moist and delicious and the ribeye steak and baby carrots was another favorite. The restaurant is beautifully decorated carrying out the same theme as the Strater Hotel. The layout is done very well as they have a lot of table in the dining area, but they are arranged such that you don't really notice how many other diners are there with you. Excellent experience - great service, great food, great atmosphere.

This place was amazing. My wife and I made a last minute decision to eat here and the Mahogany Grill surely did not disappoint. We have some excellent restaurants in San Diego but this place rivaled even those. The waiter was a very nice and attentive young man and he seemed genuinely happy to have us there. I had the special table side steak dish that does not appear on the menu often. It was divine. I can't even describe how good it was. My wife had the salmon and we polished off both our plates stopping just before we licked the plates clean. Yum! I even ate the sautéed spinach which I normally can't stand. Truly an exceptional place. We finished off the meal with the Bananas Foster which did not disappoint. My wife is not a huge banana fan but she ate as much as I did. I would recommend this to anyone that is in Durango for a night.
