One of the worst Indian/Nepali food ever, period. I am surprised to see few 5 star comments for this restaurant. May be, the folks haven't been to other south Asian restaurants. We visited Durango during the Memorial Day weekend. We were a large group from India and this seemed best choice for lunch after a long train ride. The menu looked appealing and many dishes had attractive keys words like "secret recipe", "house speciality"etc. we ordered about 13 dishes(to go). Malai kofta, Annapurna chicken, lentil , just to name a few. In every dish, the spices were all messed up, and not even a single dish was worth tasting. Either the chef made a mistake of using sugar instead of salt or it wasn't made my a chef at all. Everything was sweet and stale. No single taste what so ever. If you were the chef and reading this - please refresh your culinary skills and know your spices. If you are a customer and looking for a place to eat, go find something else.

Astounding yet delicate and aromatic flavors enhanced by warm hospitality. I highly recommend this experience.

We waited a ridiculously long time after ordering for the food to arrive. Long enough, in fact, for the waiter to think we were asking for the check and not the food. And he got mad when we told him otherwise. Lots of attitude, no apologies. Portions are small for the lofty $15+ per dish. Food is unexciting. Lamb was chewy, dry. Shrimp was actually well cooked. Took forever for the rice to show up. Had to keep handing the server the excess dishes so they would take them away. Overall a rather horrible experience. Would never waste my time or money here again.

If you want something different, and you don't require perfection, go here. If you want top-quality food and service with a smile, go elsewhere. It's ok, but I had a few gripes. Worst offense was the food on the buffet wasn't hot. Not good.

Pleasantly surprised to find a $10 buffet of this caliber. The Himalayan's South Asian cuisine is fantastic and has something for everyone. They offer many vegetarian dishes but meat eaters need not be detoured- the restaurants take on chicken Marsala is excellent. The staff is friendly and the decor a tastful Asian mix. I would gladly eat here again.

I lived in northeast India for five months, and this was the most delicious, most authentic Nepali place I've been in the US. There were four of us who went for lunch (the buffet), and we were all blown away. The average quality of all dishes was quite high, though the tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, and fresh naan were standouts. The staff are friendly and welcoming, but it can be hard to get their attention

Came here for the lunch buffet. Place was about 80% full. Overall the food was very good and fresh. Only drawback is I think there should be a larger selection of food.

I enjoyed a very good meal here, and while I've had neither yak (yaksha thenthuk) nor Nepalese food before, I enjoyed it very much. I cannot attest to whether this is "good" Nepalese, but it is without doubt good food. Customer service was warm and friendly, and the atmosphere low key, making for a relaxing meal. I would happily return when I'm in the area again.

  • BH S.

Enjoyed our meal for the most part. I will return. The Chicken Tika Masala was oddly sweet, however. The chef could be more aggressive with spices. I found myself salting everything. A bit bland for my taste. The grilled chicken and onion dish was fantastic (Sekuwa). Garlic Naan made me want more and more. I am eager to try their buffet. Service was lack luster.

Not very good food, small portions for high prices, not very friendly or attentive service.

Absolutely delicious! Went for dinner and got a sampler type plate. Everything was flavorful, hot, and yum! Walked out totally stuffed and satisfied!

The food that we got was good. The question is about the food we didnt get. Our server extremely rude and inconsiderate of our dietary restriction. He was rude and extremely impolite. He acted as if he took the order and deliberately did not bring out the order when we told him that there is a problem with the appetizers. The servers are arrogant and do not respect customers that ruins the experience of the food. She could not control his foul mouth when he insulted me in front of other customers. Go at your own risk.

It is wonderful to find a restaurant that features authentic food that is healthy and tasty. On this visit we had Sherpa Stew and Himalayan Special Chow Chow. Both dishes were ample and we were able to take home left overs for another meal of rich and exotic flavors. Service was attentive. Environment clean and inviting. We stopped at the prayer cylinders to offer prayers for a friend and were instructed on the proper way to spin them. The price was modest, $35.12 for our two meals. The owner was in Nepal when the earthquake hit and he is doing fund raising to help those in need. You cannot go wrong taking a meal here. You will be pleasantly surprised. Additionally, the store next door is owned by the same family of Nepalese and offers singing brass bowls, prayer flags and a host of other unusual items. If I wasn't flying and limited by pounds, I would have stocked up.

Came here for a late lunch and although unsure at first we left extremely satisfied. The Chicken Mo-mo and the Naan were great appetizers. We definitely recommend this place for both the food and the ambience.

Fantastic! We enjoyed the chicken tiki masala, paneer makhani, peas & mushrooms, and chai. The takeout was quick. While I was waiting the server gave me a complimentary chai (in an espresso sized cup).

While road tripping through southwestern Colorado, one would expect establishments that serve local fare. Wild deer, Rocky Mountain oysters, etc. Although Durango is the biggest town within a 200+ mile radius, a Himalayan restaurant is the last thing I expected to stumble upon, but me and my bros are so happy we did. Having spent most of my life in the Bay Area, I know what good Himalayan food tastes like. Berkeley itself has 3 Himalayan restaurants, which I used to frequent quite often when I went to school there. Considering how isolated Himalayan Kitchen is, the food they whip out is too legit and anyone who disagrees just has ignorant taste buds. To start off, get the Himalayan Spiced Wine. It's very similar to German gluhwein, Nordic glogg, or Russian glintwein. Just imagine red wine heated up with cloves, cinnamon and other sweet spices. It's the perfect way to warm up during those cold Durango winters. Since their website is not currently in sync with the actual menu, I can't quite remember the names of the dishes we got. However, Yak Momo is A MUST. Yak meat is kind of like a mix of lamb and beef. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the way they prepare it is filled with flavor and aroma, wrapped up in a delicious hand crafted dumpling. The sauce goes together perfectly as well. All the other dishes are delectable. Mushroom peas are creamy and rich in flavor. All the stews, curries, noodle dishes, etc are just out of this world. I promise you won't be disappointed with anything you try. Overall, it may be a bit pricey but running such a delicious and rare operation in a small Colorado town isn't cheap. The service is great, decor is beautiful, and the food is probably the best in Durango. I believe they're doing a great service to the community and all passing tourists by showing them there's other food in this world outside of burgers, burritos, and pasta.

This is one of the best places on main. Great food and wonderful staff. Owner is from Nepal so it's legit. Thank you for actually making food instead of just heating it up like some of the other restaurants in close proximity.

  • Matthew B.

I had the lunch buffet and although it is labeled as gourmet, I would say it is just an average lunch buffet. The flavor of the chicken, lamb, and vegetable dishes are good; but less than what I expected from other reviews. I will have to say the service was absent once I ordered.

  • Lisa S.

As far as Indian food goes this is just OK. I'm somewhat of a fan of Indian food and this misses the mark on spice and flavor.

Ate dinner here with my family while on vacation in Durango. What a great little restaurant this is. My wife and I love being adventurous with our food choices, but can be tough since she has to eat gluten free. Himalayan Kitchen has many gluten free options available. Getting information from the servers was a little difficult because of the language barrier, but several of them spoke very good English and could help out. I had the Yaksha Thenthuk which was a very tasty dish. I had never had Yak before, so was excited to try it. The Yak meat was fairly tough, but not sure if that's normal or not. Even still, it was very good. The atmosphere was very relaxing and appeared to be fairly traditional. Service was great to. I highly recommend branching out and trying some Nepalese food at the Himalayan Kitchen if you find yourself in Durango.

Visiting Durango for the first time. I usually trust and always check reviews. Gave this place a try......Really disappointed. Service was terrible, the server left our appetizer plates, soup bowls on the table empty. I ordered chicken tikki masala...very bland and under spiced compared to most Indian places I've been to. My wife ordered matar paneer....also very bland. Overall very disappointed. The daal soup was good.

  • C M.

Service was terrible. Two couples had ordered before we even got drinks. Food is fair (tastes a bit like they skimp on the spices). The naan was the only bright spot of the experience.

    (2)
  • Cameron H.

Solid Nepalese dishes, but overall service could be more attentive/observant. The portions were fair and the restaurant was clean. Everything I ordered was tasty! I was not left waiting that long, but some tables had to try hard to flag down a waiter to get service.

  • Nili A.

We have never had a chance to eat Tibetan/Nepalese food before and were so excited to check this place out. My hubby ordered a beer and I ordered a mango drink with honey bourbon, which was great! We ordered only Nepalese/Tibetan dishes since we don't get that in Phoenix. We ordered the Sangkhuwa Maccha with salmon and Himalayan Chow Chow. They were both so flavorful and we enjoyed them very much. The chow chow is a noodle dish but not like you'd expect with Chinese food. The flavor is more similar to Indian food. My daughter ordered the saag paneer as that is one of her favourite dishes. It was a little different than typical North Indian style, but still tasty. The service was great and all the waiters were very friendly and helpful. The food took a while to come out but we appreciated knowing that it was slow because it was freshly cooked, not just reheated. All around great experience! Wish they had a location in Phoenix.

  • Shivani P.

Food was ok, but the service was Very bad! No organization and long waits. It is by no means indian food, it might be Nepalese but it is not indian. In my opinion they are fooling their customers by advertising it as indian food. I could even live with that, but what ticked us off was the behavior of the waiters and staff towards customers. They did not take down our orders properly and were extremely rude to us. The waiter was very arrogant and repeatedly insulted us. Finally when we called the manager, he came over uninvited and started talking over us saying "everybody else likes this, don't know where you guys have come from that you don't like it". I have never met such rude restaurant staff anywhere... Ever!!! I think your money is better spent somewhere else, where they respect and treat customers properly.

This is my second time eating at Himalayan Kitchen and both time was amazing! Food was fresh and delicious! I ordered Ananpura Yak and it was super delicious. I end the night with mango lassi!

Drove from Arizona to Durango Christmas Day which was yesterday looking around trying to find a place that was open we found the Himalayan kitchen my comment is the service was terrible they couldn't get our food right and so basically I went without dinner! I had some rice my boyfriend had his dinner and of course he could hardly eat it because I didn't have anything to eat and I'm on a strict diet so I couldn't have his food they try to make it good by offering me another glass of wine well forget it by then I'd only seen my waiter once our food has been brought out by somebody else which is not a problem when you're really busy which they were but I never saw the waiter again so I have to say I can't say if the food was good cuz I didn't have any and it was Christmas I've been in the service business for a long time and I have to say this was bad so I don't recommend it

Was looking for something off the main drag through town. Stumbled on this place and was very glad we did. We will be back.

  • Cielo G.

Quality food on the lunch buffet. Dal is best I've had anywhere, except when they use beans instead of lentils. Tikka masala promises too. Saag had a slightly different flavor, but I attribute that to the ingredients of celery and cilantro added instead of straight spinach. It must be their twist. They perform so well in Durango. It all rates right up their with other topnotch places in the big city.

Fun find in Durango. Food was delicious and interesting. We had two Yak dishes that were, well... I tried Yak! Background music faintly sounded like someone being tortured, but we had a great time with plentiful portions. Will definitely return.

Also noticed they have an earlier lunch buffet.

  • Sara W.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to try here!! Our usual take out place was closed on Christmas Eve, so we got 2 appys and 2 entrees from here. It was fantastic!! One was recommended as the specialty of the house, the other was a lamb curry dish. They both were great. It has now surpassed most of our other take out options.

  • Amanda A.

Was really excited about eating at this place today and it was worth it. Decor and interior was nice, menu selection was phenominal and bath rooms were really clean. The meal was absolutely delicious and we're only giving it 4 stars because there wasn't many levels of spice to our dishes and for being the only table in there, they wait staff wasn't very attentive. The food was very delicious though and it was the perfect balance of flavorful and fresh and not too oily, creamy or greasy.

    (4)
  • Will G.

Long wait at the hostess stand. No hostess, no acknowledgement. Not especially busy, plenty of staff. Finally seated, another long wait for menus. Again, plenty of staff. Waiters constantly wandering by, but no organization. We finally gave up and went to a place that actually acknowledged our existence. A bigger, stronger restaurant with a better organizational scheme should come show these guys how it's done.

Oh. My. God. I just got back from a road trip to Durango. We stayed there for a week -- the food at this place is so amazing that we ended up going back there every single day to try everything else on their menu. If you don't want to read the rest below, just take with you that this is the best Himalayan/Indian food I've ever had in my life. Not too heavy, greasy, or creamy, but super aromatic, fresh, and oh so flavorful! The best of both worlds. And lunch buffet is the perfect time to try a bunch of different things for a relatively inexpensive price! :) I loved the following: --veggie momo's (veggie were my favorite, but other people we came with loved all the other flavors as well) --spicy noodle soup w/ lamb & chicken & veggies (in karma's specials on the first page of the menu, can't remember the exact name) --tandoori chicken! --lentil soup --okra, broccoli, assorted veggies w/ spices were so good --chicken choyla --shrimp sekuwa --tandoori lamb --mt. everest in a blanket (ice cream & chocolate inside a crepe, yum!) **must try -- their chia tea. It's a delicious chai latte, basically. So yummy.

One star for service. The restaurant was busy because I'm assuming the food is good. There were a Caucasian couple in front of us in the line who were offered a warm welcome, a couple of seats at the bar while they waited. Then the host decided to flutter away. While still in our visual range, he walked around speaking to the other guests, picking up a few empty glasses from the bar and basically cleaning up at his leisure while the queue piled on behind us. The folks behind us asked us , did you guys check in already? No sir, we have not. They too were Caucasian . They waited a bit and just left. We hung around a bit for god knows what reason. A couple of tables emptied in front of us and were bused. So now the host comes by and without a word or a smile, shows his thumb at an empty table. Then another rude guy shows up, this time it's the waiter. We say we are ready to order because we already checked out the menu on yelp. He doesn't give us a menu and when we described what we wanted (kabobs) he says "we call them xxxx (something Tibetan) here". I will not comment on the food because eating out is an experience and the rude staff ruined it for us. The other reviews rave about the yak meat and the other exotic things they serve here, so readers please go there to make your own decision.

Please stop by here if you are looking for good and vegetarian options!!! TRY THE CHAI you will want to get the recipe!!!!! I can't even begin to rave this place, the food and atmosphere is amazing and I want more when I come back :)

This is a great place with an excellent buffet and the food is always wonderful. I just wish the waitstaff would get it together. We have been here several times and it is almost a comical certainty they will always forget something very obvious, like 1 of 2 drinks for a table of 2, forget an appetizer of naan bread you ordered, bring you one of 2 to-go drinks, etc. The food is so good it makes up for the poor service, but really wish they would make an effort to improve that. There is even a guy who walks around appearing to service tables but never seems to pay attention.

  • Carolyn A.

Fantastic food! Tried Yak for the first time and it was a winner! Lean and tender in flavorful Yak Stew while my husband had Yak Thenthuk with radish, potatoes, timboor. Started with samosas. Excellent vegetarian thin crisp. Naan perfect. We finished with crepes and ice cream. For sure we will be back. Should add that service was excellent. Instant pleasant service, water constantly filled and quick on our order!

  • Sadie R.

The service is good, the food is delicious. Everything is fresh and tasty. Really interesting choices. The staff wants you to like, it, too. They'll check on you early if they know you are trying something (like Yak.... oh is it ever good...) for the first time.

My fiance and I headed over to this spot our first night in Durango because 1) we love Indian food 2) we heard they serve yak and yak + Indian food sounded amazing. We left in a non-disappointed state. While sipping our glasses of Riesling, we checked out the rather large menu and finally decided on some yak saag (OF COURSE) and some tandoori chicken (dark meat style). Some time after the server left, we realized that they hadn't asked us how spicy we wanted it. That meant we were going to get it gringo style. Oh well. Well, our dishes were nice and flavorful even if they were wayyyy on the mild side. The tasty, tasty garlic naan sure helped things. Service was a bit on the slow side, but friendly, and we weren't in a hurry anyway. Portions were generous and prices were about what you'd expect. I'll be back next time I'm in town, I'll just remember to tell them to add a bit of a kick to it.

Had the lunch buffet this time. Hope to be more impressed at dinner sometime. Waiter got annoyed when I couldn't understand him and had to remind him twice about the beer I ordered (got it half way through the meal). Liked the atmosphere and owners enough to give it another shot. I really want to like it!

Went in with the highest expectations, unfortunately I left feeling pretty unsatisfied. I ordered the Sherpa stew. It was described as having lamb and chicken, but I couldn't spot much. The vegetables in the stew were fresh-tasting, but the base was pretty watery. I don't think I could have made it to Everest Base Camp on the Sherpa Stew. Gotta say the ambience and staff were great, however.

This was a great place for lunch. It has a buffet with plenty of choices from vegetarians to meat eaters. The bar has a modest selection of drinks. The resteraunt was very clean and inviting, definitely a good place to eat. Namaste!

  • Emme P.

Five starts for delicious food and value. I came with my roommate for the lunch buffet and really wasn't expecting much, but I was pretty impressed. Still thinking and their chewy/crispy naan and delicious chicken curry.

  • John Z.

Take this review with a grain of salt because of the following: a) I'm vegetarian; b) we had the lunch buffet; and c) we were there at the closing half hour of said buffet. I hope, and perhaps expect, this place is better for dinner, as the one thing made fresh for us (naan) was delicious. As for our experience at the lunch buffet, there was very little vegetarian, very surprisingly so for a himalayan/indian place. What was there wasn't all that good. The meat-eater with me said the non-vegetarian stuff was just ok too, probably better had it been earlier in the buffet timing. Service wasn't as quick as usually experienced from similar places.

We came in for a late lunch on 4/24 and the purpose was to try the yak meat (i had to call ahead to make sure they have it). The chef owner Karma was very nice, When we told the chef owner that we like to try the yak dishes from the menu but also like to taste the buffet he said ok and did not charge us for the buffet. The food was really good and the service was friendly. We tried: Yakshaa Thinthuk, a typical Tibetan stew of Yak meat diced and cooked with radish, potato, homemade and hand-pulled pasta, onion, celery, Timboor, ginger, garlic, and chili, finished with spring onions. I found the yak meat like a mild beef but some part tasted like goat. The meat was tender and the flavor of the dish was not spicy at all, kinda more on the oniony side. Very nice and it somehow reminded me of the French pot-au-feu. Annapurna with Yak, Karma's creation, named after the famous peak in Nepal, locally grown yak cubed pan-fried with red and green bell pepper, green chili, tomato, spring onion, cilantro, ginger, garlic. The meat in this dish is much more chewy than in the stew and dry but very flavorful like beef jerky, imho. The buffet has typical Indian fare like Tandoori chicken, curry chicken, chicken tikka masala, lentil stew, cream spinach (saag) ... everything was nicely cooked. The naan was good too, soft and light. There was a fantastic photo of the Himalaya mountains taken by Karma in the dining room. His move from Pasadena to Durango is surely missed.

Definitely a place I would return to when in the area and that I would recommend to anyone traveling to Durango. The Naan is superb and the buffet has a variety of dishes to sample and enjoy.

  • Dennis J.

Absolutely fantastic. So good I ate there the next day for the buffet. I had the combination with the soup, lamb curry, and some other things I don't remember the name of. One was cauliflower and potatoes in a spicy sauce. The cucumbers and onion dish was marinated in lime juice and had cilantro. I could have eaten a whole platefulof that. The tea was brewed with cloves and other spices and I loved it. The lamb was fork tender and flavored perfectly. I told my wife, who was back home in Illinois, that I had found a new "mistress" and was moving to Durango to be with her! She said she'd miss me. Too bad I can't afford a wife and a mistress, so I'm going back home. But I shall return!

Delicious dinner of Annapura Yak and Katmandu chicken, very fun experience and authentic chai and mixed drink with coffee, spices and rum. The fiancé and I loved the food and would definitely go again. The service was super polite but a little slow so the only reason we bumped to four vs. five star. Portions were perfect and we left extremely satisfied!

Fantastic! Makes me long for the Himalaya. Himalayn Kitchen ends up being my go-to for multiple nights when I am in town! Service is slower than 'american style' but there is certainly nothing wrong with slowing down our frenetic pace! Espc with the warm and inviting vibe of the staff and atmosphere. Give it a try -the staff and quisine is amazing!

I've eaten here both for lunch and dinner. This morning, I'm still suffering a food hangover from last night's excellent meal. I won't write down what the three of us ate because I can't remember all the names and don't want to butcher the spelling, but suffice to say it was excellent and plentiful.. The chai tea is out of this world. Lunch here on a previous occasion was outstanding, albeit a little pricey. Service is always good and the atmosphere is inviting. I love eating here.

Hope springs eternal. The menu for this place looks pretty interesting with a mix of dishes of several ethnic culinary traditions, particularly Nepalese, Tibetan and Indian. Unfortunately, we took the advice of someone to try the lunch buffet to 'get a taste of everything'. That turned out to not be the case - it was a pretty average Indian buffet and omitted many of the dishes I thought looked interesting in their menu. The food itself was ok on the buffet. Typical north Indian buffet foods (Veggie Korma, Aloo Mottor (their spelling), Chicken Tikka Masala, naan, salad, Kheer, etc.). The service was bad (including inaccurate information about what was gluten-free for my wife). We had to stand up and ask for help a couple times. The bright spot was the Masala Chai, which reminded me of the same in India I had in several cities a few months back. If we're back in Durango, I'd try it again for the novelty of the Tibetan and Nepalese dishes, but would avoid the buffet at all costs.

Outstanding food, from a well traveled owner/chef, Himalayan kitchen provides delightful dishes, and great ambiance. A bit of interesting trivia, the owner owns the neighboring shop, a collection of interesting artifacts he has located throughout his travels, and was previously a climbing guide, including leading a couple groups to the top of Mt Everest!

We have visited Durango several times and I still cannot get over that there is a Himalayan place on Main Street. Amazing. The food was great. The atmosphere is nice and quiet. We had the lunch buffet and everything was fantastic.

We had lunch at the Himalayan Kitchen. The bread (we love Indian breads) was *excellent*, hot and tasty. The Dal was great as was the steamed dumplings. The tandoori chicken, however, was way overcooked. The service was lackadaisical at best. Very good in parts, but not-so-good in other parts. OTOH, I'd eat there again.

Oh, how I wish I lived in Durango! I would go to the Himalayan Kitchen just for the kheer and chai. Everything is great here! The buffet is fresh and tasty, entree dishes have great flavor, and the waitstaff is very attentive and welcoming. I wish I lived closer..

We went here for dinner after taking the train on a Saturday. There was two of us, and we didn't have to wait in line, which was great. They seated us immediately. We ordered a variety of dishes, and loved all of them - they were really tasty and fantastic. Our waiter was very nice and polite; and our food came in a timely manner. I don't think there's anything I would change about this place or the food. Would definitely go here again if we go back to Durango.

Bottom line, great food, but the bad service made the whole experience unexpected for a great town like Durango. This was the first time I've left a 0% tip for service at a Durango restaurant, and my family has been vacationing here for 10+ years. The waiter took 4 drink orders, then left the table, we had a party of 6. Once we were served, our waiter sat down with a mysterious patron, and proceeded to have dinner! We asked for our check several times, but had to wait until he fiinished dinner with the guy in a blue jack with an American flag on his left shoulder? Again, go for the food, not the service. Hope they find a way to stay in business during these rough times.

Easily one of the best, maybe even the best restaurant I have been to. Everything we had was amazing. I most enjoyed the vegetarian saag, but the vegetable curry and lamb curry were also excellent. The cheese pakora was yummy with a flavorful cilantro dipping sauce. I can't wait to try another dish when I'm in Durango again.

I went with a few friends to dinner at the Himalayan Kitchen while visiting Durango last week. We had great service from the friendly staff who were very quick for refills or anything we needed. They were very accommodating to an allergy and made new naan bread and an entree to suit. We had momos to start and my friend and I ate way too many. I think they swelled in my stomach or something because I was seriously feeling bloated. My suggestion is to stick to only a couple of those instead of the 8-10 each we had. LOL

Fantastic! Lucky Durango to have this place instead of one more boring pub and grill.

In my many walks around downtown Durango, both as a tourist and a local, I have lingered at the window of Himalayan Kitchen. I have a soft spot for Nepalese food, but a very hard time finding it, and I was holding out hope that I could find it here, along with Indian fare. E brought me in one night after picking me up from work (no small feat, since I work an hour away!) We had been mulling over dinner options the entire drive home, but I was a little surprised when we parked in front of Himalayan. It's one of those places that looks interesting but always gets forgotten when you're deciding on dinner. The restaurant is long and narrow, with a short bar (not length-wise, but height-wise, since you sit in regular chairs) with every liquor imaginable. We were shown to our table and quickly given pappadams with dipping sauce. Delightful. I always hated those as a child but find them delicious as an adult. We also ordered a pot of hot masala chai - on a cold night, and for only $3.99 for about 3 cups per person, why wouldn't you? I was pleased to see both Indian and Nepalese on the menu, including some very unique choices. Almost swayed by the mo-mos (Nepalese dumplings), I instead chose the Sherpa stew - lamb simmered with rice, Himalayan spices, and TONS of vegetables. The bowl was humongous and hot, and I only got through about half. No worries. It became a delicious lunch the next day. E had his heart set on yak, because seriously, where else do you see a lot of yak on the menu? He picked the Yakshaa Thentuk, yak meat cooked with potatoes, radishes, house-made pasta, onion, and spices. OMG yak. It tastes like a hybrid of lamb and beef, with the buttery texture of prime filet mignon. I thought I'd died and gone to exotic meat heaven. Not a hint of gamey flavor or toughness. If only all meat could be like yak. E and I had a lovely time lingering over chai and stew and yak. The service was fabulous and everyone was incredibly attentive. E asked me the next day if I had at one point filled his cup with chai. When I denied it, we decided it must have been our waiter. Amazing. We never even noticed... It was the perfect de-stressing that I NEEDED after a crazy day at work. We will definitely be back, maybe on a weekly basis :) And next time, I'm getting dessert!

Really good food but s-l-o-o-w service. We sat down with only 4 other tables oy one had not ordered and it took a really long time to have our order taken. This set the pace for the entire evening. But the food was so delicious we'll definitely be back. The yak Annaperna was spicy & delicious. The lamb Sekuwa was so moist, tender and very good. A must try for fans of Nepalese/Indian cuisine. 2.5 stars for service 5 stars for food.

Since my server didn't have a cold (see AB's notes below), I had very nice service and very flavorful food. When I eat at a Nepalese restaurant I eat Nepalese food and not Indian that they always seem to offer. I had just had Nepalese a couple of weeks ago in Flagstaff and this is very comparable. If I had to choose I would say Flag's is a bit better, but the staff was much friendlier here - small town friendly. Nepalese is not for everyone but if you're adventurous, please do give this place a try.

The Himalayan Kitchen is a wonderful restaurant, and a great choice for those who need a gluten-free diet. The buffet is really good, especially on Mondays when they have lamb! Dinner is delicious too. I ordered an amazing shrimp dish from 'Chef Karma's Special Dishes' and it was divine. I also tried this amazing bread stuffed with potatoes, to die for! I find the spices used here more subtle than most Indian restaurants. The curries are really unique, not the typical bright yellow curry you usually get, but a really dynamic but subtle combination of spices. I was really hesitant to try YAK!!! but found out that it comes from Montrose, CO. And it was delicious! They have the best chai I have ever tasted, and the best rice pudding ever! The staff is very gracious and friendly, can be a bit slow sometimes, but the pleasant atmosphere makes up for it. You feel like you are eating in someone's home.

Since we're away from home for several months, we decided to get Indian food when the opportunity arose as we briefly visited Durango. We ordered the Chicken Makhani (AKA Butter Chicken?), Garlic Naan, and Veggie Korma as well as their yummy Chai. The Butter Chicken didn't seem quite right. We were a little disappointed to find that their food was not as spiced as what we're used to-- but maybe that's what comes with being a hybrid restaurant (nepalese-indian) and not just straight-up Indian. Ultimately it hit the spot, but I still miss the Indian I can get at home. Our tab came to $36 before tip.

I had the lunch buffet for $8.99. While it was a bit pricey for what you got, it was excellent and flavorful. In fact, i think i may go back tomorrow.

Tasty interesting food. Tho I would not recommend the pan fried noodles it was too salty for me and I feel like it was basically all the different meat throw in from other dishes and add noodles then you have that. Everything else seem very delicious such as the sizzling option they offer. So the other dishes are worth trying. Also they have a full bar even cocktail like white Russian which is a plus!.

This gem of a restaurant on the main street in Durango is a must for those seeking Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indian food. The atmosphere is modern Tibetan. The host and waitresses are awesome. The food is authentic and can be made to suit your tastes.

I am hesitant to write a review, because I feel a little sorry for this place that is clearly trying so hard... but I would like to help them improve, so here goes. My first impression was created by the waiter, who was clearly sniffling with a cold. Kind of made me not want to touch anything he gave me. My second impression was created by the prices. I thought, well, I guess it will be good! We ordered naan, a mango lassi, chai, lamb vindaloo, and chicken korma. I was tempted by the yak, but felt like some comfort food. All items came in a timely manner, but nothing was delicious except for the lassi. I love vindaloo for its balance of garlic and chili with a sour kick to finish, but this was barely spicy and overwhelmingly vinagary. I know this is a himalayan place, so maybe those indian dishes aren't their specialty. Nevertheless I feel if they are going to offer them, they should be worth serving. Our last impression of the place was an upset tummy. I'd like to see this place do well, maybe they can improve some of these things. Given our final impression, I am not sure if we will be back to see if they do!
