Tia Maria's is a staple of my workplace, which is nearby. Their green chili is what their best known which is how you would want great green chili to taste. Today, I got pickup on my lunch break and had the carnitas tacos. The tortillas are lightly fried to give it a soft but crispy texture. The tortilla does not fall apart. Their house salsa is something I would gladly sip on straight. The service is great at this family run joint. They have made an effort to know my and my wife's name and always accommodate her gluten allergy.

We came here on vacation from Indiana. Very good food, great service. The chips & salsa was very tasty, my margaritas were perfect. I had the Pollo Abodaba (because I wanted the potatoes!) and I was not disappointed. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. The boyfriend had tampeiquina (sp?) and was just as impressed with his dish as I was. If we lived here we'd come back again.

We went to this place based on the yelp reviews it had and I'm glad I did. The chips and salsa were great and so was the food. Our drinks were barely empty. My husband had these shrimp wrapped in bacon, stuffed with cheese. PHENOM. Then I had the Tacos de Carnitas, which were SOOOOOOOO amazing. I loved it. Our server came by toward the end of our meal and asked us if we had been in here before. We told her no and that we came in because of yelp. She was happy to hear it and "Welcomed us to the Family!" We will certainly return and bring more people with us. Great food and great service. An overall great experience. We'll be back.

This is the best Mexican restaurant in the whole metro area. They recognize me when I come in and are always friendly. The Green Hornitas margaritas are to die for. Strong, not too sweet just all around perfection. I've yet to have a dish here I didn't like. Next time you are carving Mexican head to Tia Maria's!!

Awesome and authentic! The place looks a bit daunting from the outside - but most great places do! Inside you find a genuine Mexican restaurant with a hard working staff making some of the best Mexican cuisine in the metro area. Plenty of space, friendly and fast service. Large menu selection. Check it out!

We are originally from Denver, but for decades we have lived in Houston. The only thing we don,t miss in Denver is Mexican food. But FINALLY we came across Tia Maria's! We both had the best chile rellenos that we have had in years: spicy, large poblanos filled with queso Oaxaca and beautifully fried. The batter was not thick and gummy or greasy. The green chile sauce was spicy and flavorful. The rest of the menu calls us back. The server said the owners are from Zacatecas, so there is a authentic tradition behind the operation. Can't wait to return for Posole, carnitas and breakfast!

Service was great. Chips amd salsa below average. Dinner, (Hamhock in green Chile rice and beans) was really average. I have heard great thinhs though. I will give an9ther try soon.

Arrived around noon .1st time here and from start to finish the service was great . I had a smothered bean burrito which was real tasty & a small menudo. And Mexican bread. a few bites into the menudo and something about it was not very pleasing to me I told our waitress and she took it off our bill without hesitation and asked if i wanted something else instead. then the owner gave me a card for a free one on a return visit . All were super nice about it . When I first looked at the menu I thought the prices were a little high compared to mexican restaurants on the south side of town but after putting it all together , service , food and being so close to home it was all okay .yes I will return earlier next time for breakfast I'm looking forward to having some of their pork green Chile with some eggs , and beans , and potatoes . Thx .again !

Chips = Delicious, fresh. Salsa = A nice spice. Super Yummy. They serve Coke products, YAY! I ordered the cheese enchiladas, and they were yummy! I mixed them with the rice a lot more than I usually do. But that was only because the homemade enchilada sauce had a little too much of a spice. Whatever that spice was, it made it a bit bitter. But no worries cause I really didnt notice it when I mixed it with the rice. The rice is also tasty. And for previous reviewer(s) who complained about sticky tables, they now have table cloths that get rid of that.

  • Dana K.

The service was good, everyone was very friendly. The food was mediocre at best. The salsa tastes like it was made with Tobasco, which is weird. There are other ways to add spice to salsa. The veggie fajitas were predominately potatoes, which is also strange. The mexican rice was bland and flavorless. Margaritas were good and my boyfriend said the chicken enchiladas were pretty good as well. There are better places in the neighborhood, so I doubt I'd go back.

I ate my first meal here 15 years ago. It was a 5 star meal to me but there wasn't that much competition back then. Sure, now another place could have a dish, a salsa, or a side that is more to your liking. but I have found the total package at Tia Maria's to be unbeatable. And i could swear that the young ladies that seated and served us today have been there the whole time. My "take company to dinner" place no matter how sophisticated their Mexican palate may be.

Best place ever hands down we always have great experiences and their appetizers are amazing! The menudo is bought from heaven! My family and I are very happy when we go the place is clean and people are just so nice sometimes they're a little tight on time and can take a bit to get your food but that's very understandable when we go it's very busy it's just good food! It's worth the wait for sure!

I was really excited to go to Tia Maria's after the Westword review for the Green Chile, and all of the raves on yelp. After going there for lunch today I'm a bit let down. The green chile was nothing special, and the food was pretty average. What a bummer!!! I need some more go-to Mexican restaurants and this one was supposed to be a sure thing.

Read the reviews and thought we better try it. We had breakfast so will have to go back and try lunch or dinner. I had Huevos Mexicana. If you love jalapenos you will be fine as there are almost more jalapenos than scrambled eggs. I like jalapenos, I don't love jalapenos. There were so many it made it a little bitter. Would order it again but will tell them to do about half the jalapenos. Green chili was just ok. Green is my fav and always searching for great chili. The Spanish rice was fresh and beans were just beans. Service was good but we were the only ones there. The wife had the Mexican omelet and really enjoyed it. We will try it again but right now 1 more chance and determine if they live up to the ratings.

Our first outing to Tia Maria was a good one and we'll definitely be back! While it's a rather unassuming location just north of 72nd & Pecos, the food is impressively satisfying. We enjoyed the tacos al carbon (1 chicken, 1 pork, 1 chorizo) and their steak topped with two fried eggs and green chile. The green chile was nice & spicy. We received very friendly, prompt service and the other patrons seemed to be regulars who knew the waitstaff well. Be sure to add Tia Maria to your list of dining out options in the north metro area.

This place is great! Amazingly accommodating to my gluten allergy! All their sauces are made with corn starch as opposed to flour! They even heated up a deep fryer with clean oil to make me some chips!! The owner Maria personally came to the table to talk with me about my food choices. Once the food was on the table I was even more impressed! I had the chicken enchilada, chili rellenos (which were prepared specially for me due to the flour content in the normal recipe), beef taco, and beans. The rice is apparently deep fried in the same fryer that other wheat products are, so I passed. The service was good. The place is family run and everyone seems to be very friendly and genuine. All in all a great experience for my grandmothers 87th birthday. We will be back! Thanks for being so Gluten Free friendly Maria!

Been coming here for 10 years, every time I go someplace else I feel like Im "cheating" on Tia Maria. Fajitas, enchiladas, both are my favorite. Come for happy hour mon-Thur and get their margarita.

I'm very picky when it comes to Mexican food and this place is very reasonably priced for the serving sizes you get. It is a hole in the wall and I wouldn't have gone into it if I wasn't with my roommate who had already been there before. I haven't tried everything on the menu but the chips, salsa and small side of guacamole could be a meal in itself! I LOVE THIS PLACE and would recommend it to anyone looking for fast, delicious authentic Mexican food

Tia Maria is my new #1 for Mexican Food. The food here is seriously as good as it gets! Must try the steak and eggs breakfast special ...steak, eggs, fried potatoes, green chili and coffee all for about $6! Everything I have eaten here is great, the prices are good and the staff is super friendly.

I tried to like this place, I really did. My first trip, I went for lunch. The food was OK, but nothing to write home about. My second more recent trip was for dinner. The salsa was excellent, however the chips were terrible. They tasted burned and stale enough that we requested a second basket of chips. The second basket was no different. The guac was not that great. It had been pureed instead of smashed/chopped. I guess they are too busy to chop up the avacados and smash them, so they throw it all into a blender which breaks apart all of the proteins and ruins the texture and flavor of the avocado. The chunk of thin beef I had for dinner unfortunately was tough and lacked any flavor. I don't think I'll bother coming back to this place, and I'm not sure what all the hype is about.

  • Brandon W.

The qualify of food here is the only thing that earns the four stars. The service was pretty slow and inattentive, while the building seems pretty old and run down. Oh, well... a good plate of the tacos al carbon is all I needed to feel the need to return the next time I'm in the area.

This is my go to place. We drive from 136 and 25 couple times a month. Love the chile , staff is attentive, and it is quick service. My only beef is I hate when kids meals are barely cheaper than an adult meal. Over all todo bien.

Amazing service! The waitresses were extremely kind and were all smiles. The food was really good, but it was the dessert that shocked me. I had something that started with an "S," Sopatilla, or something like that - in Spanish it sounds like a verb that would mean "to smack you upside the head" - so I was a little nervous in ordering it. I was surprised when I saw the dish: it's a small loaf of bread that is fried and puffed up, then covered with powdered sugar and comes with a side of honey. I kid you not, that bread was delicious!!!

  • Taylor V.

Some people might be getting a little out of hand with the rave reviews, but then again, its very good Mexican food in a neighborhood that is saturated with Mexican food options. The service was ok, the food was good, the place itself is a hole in the wall, the prices were reasonable - those things are always good enough for me, but if you are looking for something fancy then this is definitely not your spot. I lived right by this place for a few years, and finally tried it right prior to moving out. I had found so many good Mexican places in the neighborhood I was never in a big hurry. Overall though, its good Mexican, just not "5 star" and there are better hole in the wall spots, Taquería El Trompito and Tacos Y Salsas are both solid options in the neighborhood as well.

OK, from the outside I'm thinking I am walking into a Patrick Swazy movie, with iron grates on the inside of the windows and the outside looking like an old roadhouse saloon, on the inside I am thinking I have just entered a shop lining the streets of Tijuana. The kid that sat us at our table was friendly and made us feel right at home. I was very nervous about getting there and the restaurant was empty, but by the time my first drink arrived the tables were filling up fast! I state first drink because by the 2nd house margarita I thought things were quite lovely and couldn't understand why I was ever apprehensive in the first place. The food was great, the servers and I say plural because it seemed like everyone in the restaurant was our server, were friendly and made us feel like we were at my aunt's kitchen table, so I find the name very fitting.

After seeing a few months ago that Tia Maria was Westword's 2012 pick for best green chile, the GF and I "put it on the list". Finally got around to visiting for dinner this past Friday night. I live near downtown and I eat a LOT of Mexican food. I like different places for different reasons: When I want something a little more exotic and don't mind dropping a little extra money, I go to Las Margaritas; when I want something fast, I go to Las Delicias; etc. Where Tia Maria fits in to this now: When I have any reason to be on the northwest side of town. The building is unremarkable. A little run down, even. The dining room has a certain authentic "lived in" feel to it that gives the impression this place has been there for a long time and, judging by the early dinner crowd, it will be there for a long time still. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our waiter was over to take our drink orders within a few minutes. We hadn't yet finished perusing their unique cocktail list, so ordered waters just to get started; waitress asked if we wanted a lemon in it. I don't really care either way, I just can't remember the last time I was given a choice. GF ordered the house marg. In far too many places that means a tart, syrupy bastardization of a fine beverage. Not here. I'd take their house marg over many places' fancier fare. I ordered a "Silk Stockings" because I was intrigued by the flavor combinations. I should have expected the pink sugar-bomb I got but didn't enjoy, but that's not a criticism...I could have expected that if I'd thought about why that flavor combination was unique. After reading on here about how good the chips and salsa are, I was looking forward to them. The chips were fresh but the salsa was far too close to its literal translation: sauce. No, thanks. I did not yet know this would be the ONLY criticism I would have of the food. The menu says the carnitas plate is served only on on Friday and Saturday, and I didn't know when I'd get another chance, so I gave it a shot. The golf ball-sized chunks of tender pork that showed up were incredibly juicy and marvelously spiced. As for the famous GREEN CHILE: I prefer mine a little on the thick-and-chunky side, and their is diced and a bit soupy; the flavor, however, is tangy, smoky, and spicy. In a word? PERFECT. The pico de gallo served with my plate looked a little dry, but tasted freshly chopped. The guacamole was so fresh it practically glowed on my plate; simple but very tasty. The flour tortillas were also clearly made in-house, which is not the kind of thing I would usually even notice. They were great. At many Mex places, the chicken is just chicken. GF ordered the chicken burritos and we were both very pleasantly surprised that the chicken was very tastily spiced and slow-cooked so as to be delicious, succulent, and tender. Wrapped in their home-made flour tortillas + melted cheese + green chile = Best chicken burrito I remember having anywhere, ever. On top of it all, each of our meals was inexpensive (less than $10 per plate) and large enough to provide a full meal the following day. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Recently ate here and got the Chimichanga. It was a lot of food, and tasted great. Complimentary chips and salsa, I'd eat here again!

I went because I read westword wrote it was the best green chilie in Denver. To be honest it was more like slop. I should have known better when i saw that there was nothing but Caucasian people( no offense but they do not know what what good Mexican food is) also the waitresses were horrible, I will never go there again and never read another westword...so disappointed.

First time stopping into this restaurant. Everything was great, fast service, friendly waiter and food was great! Although a little pricey for 3 enchiladas and a side of rice and re-fried beans for dinner.

This review is for the carnitas plate and the service, which are both solidly five stars. The carnitas plate (available Fri and Sat only) is on my short list of last meals on earth. It includes perfectly cooked chunks of pork, guac, standard rice and beans, and the most heavenly grilled onions anywhere. Eating onions = tummy trouble for me, but I can't stop myself from eating all of mine and then poaching off other peoples plates. I try to limit myself to plates that are on my table, and so far social mores have kept me in check, but I can't make any long term promises. Fellow diners beware! The chips I believe are homemade, but there is something imperfect about them. However, I like the salsa enough to do my share of damage to the complimentary basket that they bring. The margs are pretty good, though they use a mix vs. fresh lime. The regular bartender is one of the family member/owners and it is not unusual for him to send a free tequila shot to the table after dinner. Awesome! The servers are really friendly and even when all the tables are full manage to make sure we are happy with our food and our thirst is properly quenched. I can't vouch for the other menu items, they are OK, but probably not 5 star outstanding. My 11 years of experience eating here advise to get the carnitas plate on a Fri or Sat night.

Whenever I get down to Denver, I always look to make a stop at TM. After a recent early-morning raid on Paulino Gardens, my reward was a wonderfully delicious plate of TM's huevos rancheros.... The decor is awesome, and so in-line with traditional Mex joints. Where else can you see side-by-side photos of Princess Di and our Lady of Guadalupe? The chips/salsa are great...the food is great, with almost too large portions. I find most other CO Mex restaurants (except Santiagos and a few others) to be lacking. TM is the real deal, and will remain on my active Mex food rotation

They have Pigs Feet in their Menudo! Hell yea! Great Food. Great Atmosphere. PIGS FEET! YUMMMY. Hard to find these days. Great Menudo. Great Margarita's. I need to visit there again soon!! :) Authentic and good, why not try?

  • Claude F.

This place was pretty solid. Food was good but I wouldn't make a special trek over there as the fare seemed to me similar to Mexican restaurants all over town (I had the chile rellenos plate). Service was great though and atmosphere is sure cool. I'd head back sometime and try something else for sure though based on the raves people have written here.

Went there for some refried beans because my mom didn't want to make fresh ones for her enchiladas. I was charged $8 for a PINT of beans. Wth. Talk about being taken advantage of. I also ordered a PINT of salsa with chips. That was also $8 for a total of $16. Seems like they look at you and are like I'm charging this mofo as much as I can. I mean they have a sign behind the counter saying price changes with attitude. Really? Their food is decent but their attitudes suck. Believe me there are many Mexican restaurants in the Denver area that appreciate your business not take it for granted that are better and cheaper. It was close to my mom's so she asked if I could stop by and grab some beans. I could have gotten beans,Chile and chips and salsa at tamale kitchen for $16.

Great place! The service was impeccable, probably the best I've had in any Denver restaurant. Greeted right away, the drinks and water refills came instantly, food came out quick. As much chips and salsa as you want. The margaritas were delicious and a great price at $4.25. Lots of items to choose on the menu. Ordered a combination plate, very good, there was no standard red enchilada sauce to be found. Spicy but did not lack flavor. I will definitely be coming back, the service alone gets 5 stars.

I flew a corporate jet from Salt Lake City to Denver (Jeffco) twice a week for 7 years. During this time a fellow pilot recommended Tia Maria, and I fell in love! I've tried many menu items, but I usually order my favorite Tacos de Pescado (Fish Tacos). They are fantastic! Broiled instead of breaded and fried. Served with good rice & beans. The portions aren't ridiculously wasteful big either. They're just right to fill me up, but not leave me feeling stuffed. Even the Diet Cokes are better than most. They must have the machine's mix set just right or something. I've been able to arrive early enough for their breakfast on a few occasions too. Just as great! The service is wonderful. Exceptional. Very attentive, and genuinely grateful and polite. I'm always met with a bright smile. There are usually quite a few Fire Fighter and Police Officer customers present too, which is a good sign. They frequent the good places. Complimentary sopapillas with honey are a great finish. I've moved to the Denver area now, and it's well worth the half hour drive each way. 5 stars...PLUS!

We checked out this restaurant based off of the reviews but we have to say we were very disappointed. For 10.95 you would expect a better quality when you order a combination plate the enchilada that had a red sauce that was completely burnt, the taco meat wasn't meat, it would be considered fillers that was kind of ground up it's no quality probably would be stuff that you normally would be thrown away at the stockyard, you could get better taco meat at Taco Bell then you could get at this place. We're gringos from El Paso Texas and we would definitely not recommend this place. They state on their menu that everything is freshly made the tortillas are purchased, the beans are not homemade, nothing in that place is homemade.

Good Mexican food, in a familiar watering-hole/restaurant combo layout. There is the smell of beer, sticky, gaudy plexiglas-covered tabletops, stuffed parrots hanging from the ceiling. The food is good, although the rellenos are cheese only. The chips were fresh, and the sauce spicy and fresh. They don't sell Tia Maria, although they have many other drinks. But then, I don't drink.

Used to come here all the time in high school, and today I was reminded why. Even though you can get great Mexican food anywhere you throw a rock in this area, hopefully your rocks hits here at least once. The staff is friendly and everyone is looking to help you not just your waitress. The busboys and other waiters/waitresses will stop just to make sure everything is as it should be. Today I had the fiesta nachos which were more than enough for me, on quantity and flavor. The refried beans are perfectly seasoned and creamy, as is the guac, and the salsa is tasty. Not much else to say about the place, Telemundo is on the televisions... that's all.

I was taken here by people who frequent this fine establishment. I liked it so much I asked if we could go back. Two times in three days. Ordered the Chili Relleno combo. I love the concept of a crispy relleno (wrapped in an egg roll skin and deep fried) and smothered it green chili. I'll be back next time I am in the area for sure!

    (4)
  • Sheryl L.

Chips are overdone and the guacamole lacks flavor. Not a good way to start your meal. Luckily the margarita is good but be sure to request on the rocks if that's your preference. I ordered the chicken mole which didn't really taste like anything. The server was kind enough to offer to bring me some fajitas instead which were ok. The service was good but I would not go back to eat there again.

Tia Maria is by far my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the Denver area. Their Green Chili is the best around, and just spicy enough to enjoy without regret. My husband is a big fan of the salsa and usually orders a combination platter so he can try several of there tasty menu items. I have had a hard time straying from my usual Chill Relleno plate (soft) I am a connoisseur have had a lot of Mexican places in Denver and these are close to perfect. The service is fast and friendly and the place is easy to find with its bright pink paint job you can't miss it.

I found this place on Yelp and was not disappointed. This place is the real deal. Fresh chips and salsa are fantastic. I had the #13 combo which had a chili rellano, a taco and beans and rice. The flavors were all spot on. The decor is no frills- super tacky (i love it!) The prices are low and the meals are large. What more could you ask for?

I can't think of another place I've been in this town with more efficient and personable service or better food with creative homemade flavors. Their combination plates pale in comparison to their specialty items, but everything we've tried here has been fantastic. Favorite specialty items include carnitas in any incarnation, enchiladas carbon with a smoky and unique homemade tomatillo sauce and steak feo, Sure, since discovering Tia Maria we've considered trying other Mexican joints that were maybe closer to home, but feel as though we would cheating on the one place that's never let us down.

This is my second favorite Mexican restaurant in Colorado. The service the food, especially the chilli rellanos are FANTASTIC! I have turned a lot of people on to this place as some are put off by the location and the color of the building (incidentally, they repainted it). It is great, the service is fantastic, chips and salsa, all great. Carnitas, YUM! If you love Mexican food, you will love this place...

I was pretty impressed with the food here. It was as if I was eating great homemade Mexican food. It was not pretty food, but it was tasty. The menudo was some of the best I've had. Solid food and great service. A+

Easily the best Mexican restaurant in Denver. From the jukebox to the free tequila shots occasionally dispensed by the bartender, this place is muy authentico. I even saved my relationship here - I was hooked on Guatemalan cough syrup and my relationship was in trouble because I had this side thing going with this chick that had appeared in Leg Show Magazine. To save our relationship, we decided to take a vacation to romantic Mt Rushmore, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Even that idea went bad - my night companion Amy caught me in the men's room of an Arby's committing an indignity with a transgendered trucker. It could've went either way but I bought her some Black Hills gold and a little purse sewn by a real Indian. When we got back to Denver I treated her to carnitas at Tia Maria and we've been together ever since!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
