For the breakfast burritos: Solid, nothing too crazy. For $2.35, it gets the job done. (and it is next to mi casita, bonus:)

Ordered 9 dozen tamales from here today for a work event. I wish that I could combine the flavor of La Casita's green tamales with those from Camargo's (they are way more meaty). Maybe I am an idiot and the green tamales from here are vegetarian?! I really think there was a tiny bit of meat in those suckers though, I'm not positive. I was content eating one green and one red together, as the red ones had a little more meat in them and lacked taste. The price was right though, as is with most of the items on their menu. The last time I was here before today was perhaps more exciting. I ate green chile cheese fries. SALVATION STATION. The fries were nice and crisp, even underneath all that flavorful green chile. And my shredded beef deluxe burrito wasn't bad either. The staff here have been super nice every time I go in.

If ya look close on the wall theres a picture of the grand matron of the family gettin a blessin from the pope! Well, th Lord and my momma knows I aint no proper catholic but them prayers were answered with the best dang tamales ever made on god's earth! I got friends drive up here from New Mexico to get 'em & they bring 'em back down south! Now don't that beat all?! Happy Birthday Texas Pete,(from N. Carolina!) Here's to you!

Saw the article in the Denver Post today, stating this was a geat place to come for tamales, so we tried it. Place was busy, at 1300. They had just ran out of the green tamales (vegetarian), but the line for take out was 15 people deep, and dinning room only had one open table. With all this I thought they must be good. Order taker and cashier were less than friendly, even the older gentleman (manger maybe) who handed us our Bean Burrito with cheese and dozen red pork tamales was not friendly. We will not be going back. Next time we will try Taqueria el Trompito they had great burritos and hopefuly tamales.

I have been a fan of this place for years and tell everyone that likes tamales to eat there. The tamales are always very tasty and you definitely cannot eat just one. I have never had a bad experience there and your to-go tamale order is fast. I do want to say though that if they continue to make the tamales as skimpy as they were the last time I went, I will not be able to rave about them anymore and will have to forego my visits there. If I had a suggestion to make to them regarding this... if the cost of making them has gone up, dont make the tamales skimpier, raise the prices. I for one would rather pay a little more for how big they were before than pay the same price for tamales that are half the size.

i used to live in this 'hood and would get breakfast burritos and tamales here a ton! it used to be a tiny shack of a place with no seating. i almost felt they must bring the tamales in cause it was such a tiny dark place. hadn't been back to the old 'hood in awhile...and decided to go back a little while ago. i drove to where the old shack was...and to my surprise!! a big building with seating, and waitress service! i was shocked. no really exciting frills inside, but the food! i continue to order my fave-red tamales, although sometimes i will do the half and half...some red, some green. but the red are my favorite! i could eat them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner! less than a dollar a piece and handmade!! mmm mmm good!

This is what you need to know about this place: It looks like a motel breakfast room inside, but that doesn't matter because the tamales are effin' amazing. Good prices, great food. If you're around the Denver area, check it out.

Best tamales in Denver!! I love the green chile and cheese tamales - excellent flavor and very spicy. The red tamales are good, too, but I like my food hot and spicy. Their green chile is very good as are the beans. They cater our company Christmas party fundraisers a few times a year so I'm able to get my tamale fix. My only regret is that I don't live in the northside anymore. Otherwise, I'd probably be there all the time. One day I'll get down there and try a breakfast burrito.

This place is one of those amazing Highlands finds that I just can't praise enough. Nine bucks for a big bag-o-tamales, and each one is exquisite. The green chile and cheese ones are nuclear hot but so delicious I can easily down two or three. This place is essentially fast food so I won't expound upon the decor or the service, but considering what you get, how fast you get it and how much it costs, you really can't beat La Casita.

I've been frequenting La Casita for about 11 years at both locations. Their tamales are the best things since your grandma's/mom's/auntie's. Their green chile is excellent as well. We always get our traditional holiday tamales here. During the holidays be warned, they sell out by like 3:00 pm. Their tamales are always a big hit. Even at office potlucks with the people who are afraid of Mexican food. The may stare at it a little longer than usual, but once you explain you don't eat the husk and it's not made of pork brains or tongue, they will try it and like it. The place is always very clean and the waitstaff is always very friendly. The patrons vary now from the newcomers to the Highlands to us old timers who grew up in the area. They have a few tables outside, but if they are short staffed that day you may have to order your food to go rather than be waited on outside.

A Japanese film crew, coffee, 8am and a steady drizzle make for "Ninja stars vs Mexican tortillas". It also makes for great breakfast burritos. Quick, friendly and cheep. I prefer them with bacon and a side of highly polished chromed ninja steel. Tried the tamales the other day and wasn't as impressed. Lacked spice, flavor and cheese. Definitely on my short list for a quick breakfast.

By far the best green chili in Colorado! Been eating there for over 10 years along with all of my fiends, and you just wont find better green chili, shredded beef tacos, and tamales anywhere else! Service is very fast and the prices are very low. Definitely the spot to go when you want some great mexican food and an ice cold beer! Don't passs it up!

After hearing a friend rave about the tamales at La Casita, I had to try it out. She claimed they were the best tamales in Denver, which had me a bit skeptical. I don't claim to be a tamale snob, but I LOVED the green chile tamales. I ordered 6 to go and they did not last long in my house. Note to self: order a dozen next time! I'm so glad I heard about this place as I will definitely be back!

OMG - can I just say YUM! I wanted to try the spicy green chili cheese tamales so bad that I waited in line to get some. A huge line! I am so glad I did because they were so good that I ate them all in one sitting. Then I started thinking about them so much that I went back to get some more a few days later but they were sold out. Talk about crushing disappointment! I am still dreaming about these fabulous tamales and I will be back to score some more. Hot Tamales!

Great service and great prices! Its healthy fast food lunch if your on a budget. But be aware that the green chili sauce is not vegetarian but you can have the red sauce which is nice. I would rather have the meal have corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas but they were still fine.

Tamales by La Casita is the epitome of cheap neighborhood eats. Like many others, I've only eaten the tamales but that's all I truly need. The green chile and cheese tamales are seriously spicy, but still good. I prefer the red chile tamales dipped in their amazing green chile. Someday I hope to try the rest of their menu, but honestly there's nothing better than a dozen tamales to go for a paltry sum. Delicious and fulfilling.

I guess I will join the masses and give this place a definate thumbs UP! After reading the reviews below, I may have to scoot over there TONIGHT for some green chili! I have been coming here for 10+ years since I work near the place and everytime someone mentions "hey wanna hit up the Pink house?" we never second guess. For those of who knew it was the pink house before they buildt the bigger and better place with inside seating. before, it was walk thru only. As long as I live and work here, I will visit them!

Someone brought some of their green chile and cheese tamales to a potluck Thanksgiving last year and I've been addicted ever since. While I've never sat down and eaten at the restaurant, I have bought these tamales to go (they are sold by the dozen) on several occasions, once for a party and other times for myself. They freeze well in Ziploc bags and taste fine after being reheated or microwaved. I only wish they had more vegetarian options available by the dozen. Whole Foods does carry another vegetarian variety by La Casita but they are much more expensive than buying directly, which for me is also more fun.

  • Sandra L.

I love this place! I drive 30 miles to eat here. I will not buy tamales anywhere else. And their burritos are to die for the best green chili than in any other mexican restuarant I have eaten at. And their chili fries, wow are the best. I always get great service when I come here. My mother-in-law even bought some to take with her to Alaska. Her sister requested them.

Best. Tamales. Ever. OK, so I can't really claim to be a Tamale afcionado, I'm a white guy, I didn't grow up with a grandmother who made these by hand and from scratch. Although, I have had authentic, hand-made Tamales from other peoples' grandmothers, and I've had them at various restaurants around the city. Are there better Tamales out there? Probably. I sure haven't found them yet, though. They make 2 kinds Tamales - the traditional red chile pork tamales, and they also make a green chile and cheese tamale (Vegetarian's beware, I assume there to be a fair amount of lard in both flavors, I don't know how else they stay so moist. Please, correct me if I'm wrong). You can buy them by the half dozen or dozen, and they will split a half dozen for you if you want (3 red, 3 green), and that right there will cost you just a little under $6. It's worth it, though. The tamales are delicious, perfectly moist, perfectly flavorful, and they have a very nice, home-made feel to them. The texture and flavors are such that you don't need to put anything on them or eat them with anything else if you don't want to. I have never tried anything else here (never needed to), but I strongly suggest you go by this place and grab a half dozen or dozen of these tamales as soon as possible, you won't be disappointed (if you like tamales, that is). Side note: while they don't *need* any other ingredients to taste great, I do love to slather on some Santiago's green chile. You really can't go wrong in doing that.

La Casita has multiple locations. Since the 38th & Tennyson shop was recently torn down (but happily, will be reborn in spring '09), we're waiting it out over at the 35th & Tejon location. It's run by friendly folks, and open long hours (though I really, really wish they would replace the *glaring* fluorescent lights with something more breakfast-friendly). We had a party for el Dia de Los Muertos this fall, and picked up several dozen tamales... a crowd favorite. But buyer beware: The green tamales are really, really hot. I always order 2/3 red, 1/3 green for that reason. On 12-Dec-2007, the Rocky Mountain News ran an article about Paul Sandoval, the owner: "Sandoval, a state senator from 1974 to 1982, owns Tamales by La Casita restaurants... [along with] his wife, Paula, a current senator. The tamales are handmade first thing every morning.... Tamales are corn husks or banana leaves stuffed with masa and a meat or vegetarian chile mixture; they're then folded and steamed. They date from pre-Columbian Mexico, and because of the importance of corn to the culture, tamales have long been served for important occasions.... "Sandoval sells 12,000 tamales daily, steaming them in a machine of his own design that can handle racks of tamales at one time. For the holiday season, Sandoval ramps up production, making 225,000 wholesale and retail for the week, with customers lined up three deep to take home this slice of tradition. If the numbers sound large, consider that Sandoval's operation now supplies many of the local Mexican restaurants, including his own, and his tamales appear under the Old Timer label at King Soopers."

I am from Arizona and have been enjoying good mexican food for over 50 years. I have yet to find really good mexican food in Denver. After reading the LaCasita website info and reviews on Yelp, I drove 35 miles in hopes of enjoying some delicious mexican food including tamales. Boy what a disappointment. I ordered a half dozen tamales and a cheese enchilada. I was told chips and salsa would be included as part of the meal. The cheese enchilada was served immediately and I realized why . The cheese was not melted at all. Terrible. I opened the first tamale peeling away layers upon layers of husk to find a micro version of a normal size tamale. About half the size of most tamales. The masa was mushy. The flavor was ok. Now the waitress brings the bill and I see a charge for $2.50 for a small basket of chips that were suppose to be complimentary. I questioned the charge for chips but she did not understand what my inquire was all about. The guy who said the chips were free did not speak up or say a word. I have better things to do than to argue with someone who could not comprehend simple english. I suggest do not waste your time or believe what you read in these bogus reviews. This place is dishonest and the food sucks. I will continue my search for decent mexican food in Denver.

As a born and bred New Mexican girl, who also happens to be a vegetarian, I find it hard to get chile that's hot enough for me and that doesn't have meat in it (why does Colorado-style always have meat? In NM it's almost all pure, vegetarian heaven). And I was raised on my dad's tamales, so now that I'm away from home I had to find a place to satisfy my craving for New Mexican comfort food. The green chile and cheese tamales smothered with red chile (and topped with a fried egg or two if you're feeling crazy) always does the trick. Their bean tostada is also great, thanks to their wonderful salsa. Cheap, delicious and they even serve beer. We once came in with 7 friends and all ate and drank for under 40 bucks -- you simply can't beat that deal. Love it!

How have I not written a review for La Casita? 5 stars hands down, no doubt about it, some of the best Mexican food in Colorado. It's also very cheap and I will go out of my way to buy food from here. I have recommended this place to everybody I talk to that is looking for excellent Mexican food and tamales. Being a Chicana and growing up eating Mexican food I know that making tamales is a dying work of art. The perfect ratio of masa to pork or green chile is hard and La Casita has this masterpiece perfected. Red tamales: excellent. Green tamales: excellent. Green chilie: excellent. Beans: excellent. Mexican hamburger: excellent. Green chilie bean and cheese burrito: excellent (I have to admit that if I order a burrito to go and if some of the inside has fallen out, I will literally lick the foil clean. That is how good I consider this place.) Give La Casita a try, I have never been dissapointed.

I hate that I can never remember the name of this tamale gem. I am absolutely in love with their tamales and the veggie ones are hotter than hell and truely addictive. Their green chilie is pretty good also. As others have said the service is pretty blah, but I usually just get it to go. Problem solved. Only sad part is they are closed on Sunday...boo!

I've been dining with La Casita for 10+ years now. I came from New Mexico and this place was a prayer answered. Their tamales are amazing and trust me, I know!!! They don't have too much masa and have just enough meat. Their green and red chile is amazing. Enchiladas, burritos and tostadas are great! Truly New Mexican cuisine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A. G. B.

First of all the place is open and clean. It has an industrial look to it. Their specialty seems to be giving you a lot for your money. I had the tamale plate and while the flavors were decent, it wasn't anything to care much about. The green chili that they smothered the tamales in had one piece of pork about the size of a pea. The flavor was very nice fresh green chillies though, not that thickened goop that some places serve. One tamale had nothing in it as far as I could tell--the masa was fresh and nice though. The other tamale was green chillies and cheese. A bit better but not a lot. I ordered a side of sopapillas and they were excellent. I'd have much preferred that my meal cost $2 more and have a bit more quality--but that may drive their core constituency--feeding families--out. Three stars means I'm not going back on my own, but I wouldn't throw a fit if friends wanted to go there.

This place is as good at Mexican food gets. They serve breakfast burritos all day. What more do you want? Prices are insanely reasonable and the portions are very generous. This place is always clean and busy when I come in, but I have always been seated promptly. It is family owned and operated and has been in business in Denver for decades. Truly as good as it gets and I will not go elsewhere for Mexican food in this city. Thank you, La Casita, for serving my family the BEST food for many years. Bonus: They now have a renovated patio. YUM.

This is one of my favorite places to grub and the best place in Denver to get tamales. The food here has a real New Mexican vibe. The staff is very friendly and extremely quick to get your order to the table. There are even vegetarian options here. Every out-of-state visitor I have at the house gets to eat red and green tamales from here--and I sure as Hell don't wait until Christmas to buy a bunch of them. Stop on by, soon!

  • Rita B.

The tamales here are cheap and tasty, and the green chili will knock your socks off. You'd better like spicy if you order it. But the best thing about this place is that regular folks can come and hang out and feel comfortable here. You can even wear your comfy clothes here! No pretension. No 'scene' like so much of the rest of the neighborhood these days. Here, the atmosphere feels like the low-key neighborhood it used to be. Thank you Tamales by La Casita.

The only Sonoran (N. Mexico) style food I've found in Denver. Red chili - my favorite - made from red chilis only no tomatoes. Green chili with pork and without tomatoes. Fantastic tamales - get a dozen to take home because they are the best in Denver. If you want Arizona / New Mexican style food La Casita is for you.

Tamales by La Casita was my final stop in Denver as I continued my trip from the East Coast. I'm from California - I love Mexican food but let's be real I didn't necessarily plan to have Mexican while in Denver. Let's just say some very Colorado decisions led to the unintended journey to obtain tamales. Tamales by La Casita was closed by the time me and my friend left our hotel to find it. For "reasons" we didn't figure this out and walked for miles trying to find this place. It's sort of off on a side street but eventually we were greeted with a "closed" sign. Tragic! The next morning when we came to our senses we declared that the journey for tamales much not go in vain. We embarked on a redemption tour filled with coffee and salivation. It was much easier to drive and find this place rather than walk aimlessly at night. The beautiful sign was greeted with elation. I had a combo plate so I could try an enchilada and a tamale. This stuff is really good, I cannot say for certain it's the best in Denver but I would be surprised to hear otherwise. Amazing food. Very chill little place. I'll never forget the journey and the food in the end was worth it. Tamales!

I work in the neighborhood, decided to go here for a late breakfast sense I am always driving past it on tejon, and the curb appeal is nice, it has a fountain in front, and nice outside patio. I order a bacon breakfast burrito, smothered in green chili and cheese. Wonderful. Have not had mexican food this good in Denver for a while. Servers were nice. I ordered take out, and they were very quick in making my order. Great place if you are in a hurry and want decently priced, amazing mexican food.

Grabbed a bite to eat here. Ordered to combination plate with smothered bean burrito, cheese enchilada and a tamale. Wanted to add chicken but they only serve ground beef or shredded beef so I was kinda disappointed but when my food got to the table and I took my first bite, I forgot all about it. Enchiladas are pretty darn good compared to other Mexican restaurants in the surrounding neighborhood. Burrito was also good- the beans were thè right texture and flavor. Tamale was not top notch- a little slimy but overall everything was pretty delicious. Salsa was fresh, good color and consistency but most importantly spicy and flavorful. Will def be returning. Got sopapillas to go. To my surprise they weren't greasy at all which made them heavenly- sprinkled with powdered sugar and dripping with honey- oh yeaaahhh!!

Quality, affordable and delicious. Some of the best tamales in Denver and well worth a visit. The green chile was average to above average but the red chile tamale stole the show. Tasty, moist masa perfectly balanced the rich filling. I'll be back!

La Casita is a weekly stop for me. The green chile is awesome and the tamales are a must. The staff is friendly, and the art on their walls is a welcome sight to this Broncos fan. The only thing negative I can think of to say for this neighborhood gem is please open up on Sunday.

  • Allie R.

Yep, these are the best tamales in town. In my most recent visit to la casita I had ordered 2 dozen tamales, 1 dozen red chile and pork, 1 dozen chile and cheese (or veggie as they call them) for a baby shower. Every person at the baby shower wanted to know where these delicious tamales came from. I appreciate the fact they are consistent in their product. I actually preferred the veggie tamales over the pork.

I blame Mama for my review. She spoiled me with her tamales growing up. Her tamales were so infused with love they would make Almanzo Wilder weep. I'm learning the art of tamale-making now, and it's a steep curve. Until then, I can home here to keep the dream alive.

I've been going to La Casita since the mid 1990s when they were in their tiny old location. I love the breakfast burritos and the owner operated (family) familiarity. There's one bothersome thing about visiting there now. All the young female servers have their LONG hair loose and hanging over the food and drinks they serve. I was a server and hostess for lots of years. Long hair should always be tied back out of the way of service. Yuck! That is health code 101.

Super cheap, and pretty tasty. The Tamales are the stars, four I would give them We also had chile cheese fries and a chile rellano. Word to the wise the small chile fries is enough to feed two people. I would definitely come back for some tamales, and maybe try a tostada next time. The pork, and the green chile cheese tamales were both awesome. The beans that came with the plate were kind of bland and they give you an excessive amount. We moved back from NM recently, and it was not as good as what we were eating there on a regular basis. Still this filled the empty spicy craving, the aches since I left the land of deserts, mountains, and chiles. The chile cheese fries were good, but not nearly as good as Chubby's the original location. I prefer thinner fries, and thicker chile, and yes please that horrible orange velveta cheese. They use orange, but real cheese on them, but I prefer a semi solid sloppy goop on mine. The rellano was in an egg roll, and it was pieces of chile, with more cheese, different than any others I have had, it was okay. I would eat here again, I would just skip the fries and the rellano. Server was great!

This place has the best tamales in Denver! Cheap Tecates compliment the red or green tamales quite well. Really good green chili as well! Get them smothered with green Chile and cheese!

  • Michele T.

The green chili tamales are out of this world. We always stop by when we're anywhere nearby to get two dozen to go. My only complaint is the green chili to top them with is a little too spicy for my. Kinda wish they also offered a milder version. I usually make my own at home to serve with them. But no one else in Denver makes tamales this good!

Best NM food in Denver! This place is amazing, and the price is very reasonable. Try their tamales, enchiladas, and frito pies - everything is fantastic!

    (5)
  • Aaron B.

The shredded beef burrito was fantastic! Green chile was hot but lacked a little in the flavor. The beans are spot on, tortillas perfect, tamales average. The place was packed at 2pm. The menu is simple which I love! The chile relleno is the best I've had in CO. The prices are incredible! Make sure you visit this place if in the area.

I give this place my "Comer Bien" seal of approval! Omg, I had a Mexican hankering alert one afternoon and was desperate to find a place that was authentic, cheap, and flavorful. I found La Casita and when I strode in, I noted two police officers enjoying their meal break. For those of you who follow my reviews, remember my rule: if there are cops, firefighters, or EMS people eating there it must to be good! I ordered my favorite food (chile rellenos), and the green chile and cheese tamale. It was so warm, chewy, and full of flavor! My fiancé ordered the green chile, and since he considers himself an expert on green chile, said it was very good. I found the service friendly and the restaurant homey. Again, I am happy that I live in an area where there are so many wonderful restaurant choices like Tamales by La Casita.

Cheap and fast. Friendly staff and good service. Food was solid, but not anything to write home about. Chips and salsa cost extra, and the salsa tastes a bit like unadulterated tomato paste.

Green chili tamles to-go is the best way to enjoy this little gems finest offering. I'm not a vegetarian, but the green chili ones are better than the pork. I've never bothered to order anything else for fear of being disappointed. This is a purportedly wonderful establishment that helps women in abusive domestic situations; I could be wrong but I think the love shows in the food- or the tamales anyway!

  • L B.

The tamales are delicious! Both the green chile and cheese as well as the pork ones. The shredded beef and bean burritos were also amazing--my boyfriend ate two to himself and thought every bite was delicious. We also got sopapillas and they were warm and perfectly sweetened with the honey packets they gave us. My only gripe is the lack of hot sauce for the tamales but the taste was really good without it, just not enough heat. I'm already craving the sopapillas as I write this so I'll definitely be back.

Real authentic New Mexican green chili. As good as it gets this side of Santa Fe. Huevos Rancheros best $$ deal in town. Hangover? Forget it with that plate. And the tamales are tops. Awesome shredded beef for taco or burrito. Family operated--first rate. Keep up the great work and friendly prices.

I have often heard about this restaurant and had the chance to stop in for dinner one night while out in the highlands. For $10 I got a humongous platter with a tamale, enchilada and smothered burrito. Everything was well seasoned and spicy, great, great Mexican food if you want to step it up from certain other local fast Mexi food places. Tamale was perfectly cooked and I now know where someone in my office gets their potluck items!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Denver. Anytime I have out of town guests I will bring them here to try the delicious green chile and tamales. The family ran establishment never disappoints. My favorite dishes are the Chili Rellenos Plate or the Huevos Rancheros Plate. The chili is perfectly spiced and keeps me coming back for more. If you really want to enhance your meal try the margaritas, they are also very yummy!

Oh my gosh, this restaurant is amazing. I ordered here for the first time today and the customer service was great, which made the food amazing! We ordered the green and red tamales and a beef burrito with chicarrones. The burrito was the best burrito I've had... And I am Mexican-american LOL and I cook mexican food :) It was so good... I think I've just found my new spot :)

If I lived near this place I'd weigh 300 lbs. because the tamales are so delicious. I picked up 2 dozen green and 2 dozen red for my staff meeting and we tore them up! 5 stars would be in order. However, I can't award it because I dined in once and the tamales were very dry. Their always moist when I get them to go. Also, our server took our order and disappeared. I found out later that she went on lunch immediately after taking our order and never put the ticket in. I prefer the green over the red.

Finally my long lost twin Greg T. and I agree on the same starage for a D-Co joint. I enjoyed my meal so much I was yelping Greg mid bite and I believe I asked him to marry me and for us to get married in D-Co so Las Casita could cater our wedding. Frito Pie with ground beef is the only way to start off a meal here. It looked like a blob of goo but boy was it tasty. So tasty it is worth getting your own and you probably won't want to share. Tamales were SPICY (red and green pork filled) and smothered in tasty green chile. I would totally buy them by the dozen easy if I was a local. But the star had to be the bean and cheese burrito. Nelson S. was kind enough to let me snag many bites and I was easily bummed I did not order one for myself. Just the added bonus of being able to top your burrito with chicharrones was money right there. Good solid meal that is easily craveable. I'm craving a burrito now.

03AUG2013 Another Saturday lunch. This time on the outer patio. Very pleasant, but the concrete benches are not comfortable. I love the red sauce. 06OCT2012 Another wonderful Saturday lunch in the neighborhood. The pluses. 1. Green chile. New Mexican style. Mostly chiles with ground pork and not much thickener. Picante y sabroso. 2. Service. Attentive and friendly. They were constantly cleaning. 3. Cheap beer. 4. Burrito with beans and shredded beef that was filling and had a lot of flavor. 5. Tamales. Of course. Red/red is the way to go. 6. The wall of windows. Flooded the interior with natural light. 7. Parking lot. In the Highlands. Big plus. 8. Patio. Even though on the semi-snowy day, we did not use it. The minuses. 1. No Wi-Fi 2. The lighting is too harsh. Too bright and too cool.

Every time I come over to visit my in-laws, I have to get tamales from here at least once. I love the tamales from here and I can't find anything quite like it out on the east coast. I like both the red and the green tamale with green sauce. Awesome food. Love this place!

Fresh, deeelicious, family run & reasonably priced. What more could you want?! Love this place, especially the chile relleno plate. Buy some tamales by the dozen to go. Nom. PS - They call out many gluten free options on their menu.

This place is THE BEST for tamales. Get several dozen to go. We like them for parties or to share at work. They're betyer than donuts! We made them a tradition for christmas eve. The green chili is the bomb!! The prices are more than reasonable.

It would be a 4.5 if it could be. Can you say chicharrones? I had the shredded beef burrito smothered and topped with, say it with me, C-h-i-c-h-a-r-r-o-n-e-s. The best thing ever invented. It added a texture and flavor that was out of this world. Very unnecessary, but you only live once; and for short time at that. The wife had the green tamale plate. Her words..."Perfect". The refried beans are out of this world. Who cares how much lard they put in them? And I concur. The tamales were according to her, among the best she has ever had. Perfecto! The service was decent, but it was also in between lunch and dinner. We think the waitress was too busy talking with her boyfriend out back, otherwise it was solid and cheap. Lucky us that we're moving into our first home together down the street. We'll be back for sure.

La Casita is a rare find. Super friendly staff make you feel right at home, and serve up fresh tamales just like my great grandmother used to make. The food is authentic-don't expect to be catered to if you've got a bland palette, just be sure to order some sweet tea to cut the burn. The green chile sauce is flavorful, the salsa is excellent, the shredded beef is tender and delicious, and the prices are ridiculously reasonable-their big portions will fill you up. If you're looking for real good mexican food, this is the place to come back to again and again. They offer tamales by the dozen to take home, and I highly recommend it.

I have wanted to try these tamales for a while now, they did not disappoint. While I have had better tamales, and better Mexican food in general, this place delivers an excellent value. The prices are cheap! The food is good and the margarita is fairly strong, what more can you ask for? In a neighborhood full of fancy restaurants, this is a refreshing down to earth cheap eats alternative.

If you've ever wondered what Denver mex food tasted like pre-incursion of peeps from every-friggin place else in the U.S. and Mexico to CO, wonder no more. This place is a prime example of chicano style combination plates with a tasty green chile that has just enough chile heat to it. There are really just two old school tamale joints in Denver and the other doesn't do as good a job on meals as La Casita does. The owner told us about their spot on Concourse C at DIA and you can bet that's where I'll be eating when I'm there. Kinda bummed about the old Dairy Queen location on 44th and Tennyson going away but oh well... life goes on. Sitting here eating smothered tamales on the patio brings back fond memories of my childhood growing up on the Northside though. Viva Northsiders!

This place not only has excellent food, it also has soul. We were there on a busy Saturday afternoon. The wait staff is not only a well oiled machine, but they service you with a warm smile. In fact, I would say that the service was perfect. I'm not going to wax poetic about the food - plump freshly-made tamales covered in a rich and spicy red chili. Yummmmmm. Try the guac and chips - a very good price. This place has been added to my "must eat there regularly" list.

When I need my green or red chili fix, this is my go to place. I love their smothered bean burritos. Real Colorado/New Mexican food. Sticks to your bones. Tastes like spicey magic. It closes relatively early, so hit it up before 6 and grab some green Tamales to take home.

La Casita... How I crave thee! I was out-of-state for a few years, and one of the first things I did when I got back was run to La Casita for a breakfast burrito (with green chili and cheese). Exactly what I remembered... if not better because I had been away for so long. Mind you, I hate eggs and I'm not a fan of potatoes, so for me to crave something that has both, it has to be good. I'm sure it's all the green chili... This week I happen to be working right down the street, and the self control I've been having to conjure up to not run over first thing in the morning to stuff my face has been insane. This morning was no different, but I decided to wait until I was done with work. I take a look at the menu once I'm there, fully believing that I am going to have to order something other than the breakfast burrito. Set my sights on the shredded beef burrito (with cheese), but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if I could still order a breakfast burrito. And guess what?! I could!! So I got both. :-) The only thing I didn't like so much was that the tortilla that held the shredded beef was a bit soggy by the time I got home (seriously just a few minutes in the car). But the thing was so good that it didn't matter a bit! And I enjoyed it more than the breakfast burrito. The staff here is really sweet, especially the guy that usually takes my order. The food comes really fast. It's always really tasty. And you can't beat the prices.

Have stayed away for a while because of the lunch crowds but found myself in the 'hood about 2pm. No wait - what a thrill. Dozen red, dozen green tamales, extra sauce - never disappointing. Consistency is a great virtue in good food and La Casita's got it down. Definitely going back. Love my tamales!

  • Gianni D.

This is one of my family staples. Since I can remember we always got tamales from here around Christmas. The tamales are so good, they are in my opinion the best in North Denver for sure, and probably all of Denver actually. I actually never ate anything from here but the tamales for a long time, yet one day per chance I stopped in with my ex gf and daughter. Yeah, strange company, but that's not the only reason i remember it. I ate a taco, a bean burrito, side of re fri and obviously a tamale. Crazy good. I love their green chile. Only down is that they don't serve rice, a very strange thing for a Mexican restaurant to do. Well actually maybe they do it's been a few years. Either way, place rules if you're new to town, or somehow haven't ate here and have lived in Denver do yourself a favor and get cray on some tamales.

Love the fresh green chilli...I highly recommend you getting the shredded beef and bean smothered. I would give them 5 stars but I do not like their ground beef.

I've been wanting to try this place out forever... and we finally made our way over. Twice. In two weeks. Yeah... Food: Tamales are delicious - I'm by no means a tamale-expert, but I *am* a me-expert, and me likey. I like the red/pork tamale smothered in green chili (although the green chili cheese tamales are not far behind). Also - we had a tough time figuring out how many to get. Hubs and I split a half dozen, and he claimed he could have easily eaten the half dozen himself. I could have had close to that myself... Second trip - I had a tamale and a chile relleno. Chile relleno was okay, but crispy - and I prefer soft (that's what she said?), so not my favorite. Hubs had huevos rancheros, and loved them. All of the above smothered in green chili goodness. Mmmmm... Service: efficient, friendly but not overly/weirdly so... Atmosphere: listen, parking lot in the Highlands, so I really couldn't care less. But it's nice and clean inside, simple, no frills. Price/Value: awesome, in my opinion. Great prices on everything! In conclusion: if you're craving tamales/Mexican, and want a cheap delicious meal without any frills, go..... hmm... speaking of which... gotta run....

These Tamales are very very close to being as good as my grandma Rafaela's, from Texas. And that is saying a lot! They vary in size but have that perfect soft consistency with the masa and heavenly spiced up red chile pork. Yum!! The green chile is pretty good too if you like it on the spicy side. We also tried your basic smothered bean burrito and chicharones, and all i can say is, "Oh my!". No need to bother going on about the decor or atmosphere because frankly, we were so awed by the food that we could have cared less. $9 for Red (pork) dozen and $10 for the Green (chiles & cheese). Pretty decent considering the competition in NW Denver.

The location on 44th closed and that was always my families go to place for Tamales. It is worth the drive though to get them at the Tejon location. Their Tamales are simply wonderful! Reheated they don't get dry (we always get a couple dozen). Perfect spice meets wonderful texture. Top them off with my secret family green chili and it's heaven. Will be getting more for Christmas! Nothing better in our house during the holidays (or any other time for that matter) than Tamales.

  • Amy A.

The BEST tamales in Denver, if not the world. Green chili and cheese, please!! With EXTRA green chili! The only thing that makes me sad is that the location on 44th and Tennyson seems to be gone for good. Sad day. The only bad thing is that if you don't get there early enough, they run out. Especially around the holidays. So, get there EARLY! Yum.

We were in need of a new place to try been bye every week never stopped in to day was the first time dinning in. Food was great made fresh and brought to the table. Service was bad she came took the order then brought the drinks and then the app and the meal never came to check on us or offer any more chips or drinks. Another waitress came asked but it had been 10 mints of waiting and them. So food 4 stars service only gets 1 sorry service is as important as the food

The tamales are great! I love the green chili tamales. Delicious. The green chili is a disappointment. It's definitely decent, but not as good as the tamales. The price is right for sure. Between my coworker and me, we ordered two meals, 12 split tamales and a quart of green chili for the office, 6 tamales and a pint of green chili each to take home and a bean burrito for a picky coworker. For all that, the total was $55. Not bad at all.

La Casita is by far the best New Mexican food in Colorado. I always like to get the red chill and pork tamale smothered with green chile, which has wonderful masa and a good amount of kick to it. I can't believe I actually read a review on here complaining about how their green chili is TOO hot. It's freakin green chili! That person has obviously never eaten in Santa Fe-and should go to Patzcuaro's if they want weak ass gringo-style spice. The rest of us in the know will go to La Casita and taste REAL New Mexican flavor. Enough about that. The enchiladas are also very well done here. The ground beef tastes awesome, the cheesiness is perfect, and the red sauce has just the right amount of kick to it. Another five star experience. I have also tried the shredded beef tacos. Those are solid as well. The staff are always great at La Casita. They once made a mistake and inputted the dollar amount for my debit card incorrectly. The man behind the counter apologized several times, showed me a receipt indicating a credit, and told me it was on the house due to the mistake. I told him it was all good, that I understood it was an honest mistake, and that I'd pay for it. He wouldn't hear of it-he told me I'd been inconvenienced. Now that's what I call customer service. That was my first time at La Casita, and I've been back many, many times since. Not one time have I walked away from a meal here disappointed. This is by far one of the best values in Denver. The tamales are $2 smothered with green chili, the enchiladas are around $6, and the a la carte tacos are around $2. Very reasonable. I was very sad to hear the owner died earlier this year, but his legacy proudly lives on.

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more tamales and sopapillas! Food: So, I only tried the red and green tamales ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Cnhz… ) and the sopapillas ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Cnhz… ), but I was mightily impressed. The tamales are smooth and buttery. If sampling the green chile version, be prepared to have some portions of your tongue scortched off. I actually prefer the more mild red which has some shredded meat inside. As for the sopapillas, they're probably the best item out of what I tried. Those cinammon-sugar pillows of dough bring satisfaction with every bite. Service: This is a sit-down restaurant with full service, though it looks like fast food from the outside. Our meal came out quickly, but when ordering takeout it seemed like an eternity elapsed before the food arrived. Atmosphere: It's very clean inside, but not super exciting otherwise. La Casita is a chain. In addition to another location that's getting a makeover, there's actually another in the Denver Airport, terminal C. I didn't try it, but it looked decent. Synopsis: Tamales and sopapillas excel here. The tamales weren't the best I've ever had in terms of the meat (a little too shredded), but the sopapillas were to die for.

  • Yvette S.

The red chile tamales eeeek! No meat, just a pasty red substance. The reason I give them 2 stars are the breakfast burritos. Good flavor, filling and decent price. The honey sopapillas were eeh. Might go back for the burritos but will stick to Las Dos Americas in Commerce City for the red chile tamales.

Best tamales and green Chile in Denver, maybe in the world. Service is very fast and the prices are very low. Definitely the spot to go when you want some great mexican food and an ice cold beer!

La Casita was brought to my attention by an old friend. It has since become one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants in town. The tamales are the real stand out dish, but I've enjoyed many combination platters and the cheese enchiladas are worth a mention as well. I love their green chili, it's meaty, thick and has a nice kick. The restaurant's interior is a basic, no frills set up geared towards function, but don't let that fool you. The service is always on for dining in, and they have counter service for take-out orders. My drink was not empty for long and the service in general is good. As many Yelpers have noted, there are many different types of Mexican food and Denver covers a lot of ground in this respect. My suggestion is to simply try this place and see if it fits into your idea of what you like in Mexican food. My take is that it's been consistent and tasty each time I've been. Well done La Casita!

Been eating La Casita Tamales ever since I could remember. They were mostly just a Christmas treat when I was younger now they are a regular staple. I they are in my top 2 places for tamales in the city (La Popular is the other). Keep in mind this is a TAMALE place. I haven't even tried any of the other stuff they make. When I order there I always get them to go, 6 red, 6 green and sometimes I get a few bean and chili burritos. I just eat the tamales plain, they dont need to be smothered in a bunch of crap to make them taste good. They are awesome reheated as well. If you go here, just keep it simple. Order what they are known for.

I have never given any restaurant 5 stars, but this place gets VERY CLOSE! If anybody tells me Colorado doesn't have any good Mexican food, and all the best Mexican food is in LA, that person is talking out of their ass.... so many people do. Every time I go back to Colorado, I try to make a stop at La Casita's. My favorite is the smothered burrito in chile verde - I haven't found anything that even comes close although I did try and attempt to cook it up myself (close, but no tamale). I remember I took one of my female friends here for lunch and I think she was expecting a nice classy restaurant, but instead she got La Casita. When we drove up to the place, I can tell she seemed disappointed that I was taking her out to a converted gas station/restaurant, but once she tried her approx. $2-3 meal that I threw down for, she became putty in my hands.... putty that I shaped into the form of a dolphin fighting a unicorn.

The food was so-so. I don't know why people say this place is great . I had the tamale plate, which was completely smothered in green chili. Which I guess is ok but Im from az and we actually don't put green chili on everything. But ok so my combination plate had green chili on everything but it wasn't even that good and because of the green chili I couldn't even taste the tamale or the beans just the green chili. So yeah I won't be back and my search goes on for real Mexican food in Denver.

I had such high hopes for La Casita! Bummer. The first time I went here I ordered two green chili and cheese tamales...because I don't eat meat. I had just gotten back from riding at Breck, and was dying of starvation. When I got my tamales home, I saw that they had given me pork tamles smothered with pork green chili. Yucky! I had to give them to my roommates. My one star isn't based on that mess-up at all though, I'm just saying... Attempt number two. I ordered a bean tostada and one green chili and cheese tamale, and made sure the guy knew I didn't eat meat. Total was just $3.05. I thought, man, if this is good food, that is the best deal ever! I got my food home, and everything was right. The tostada was your basic no frills bean tostada - fried corn tortilla, refried beans, iceberg lettuce, and shredded cheese. It was all right, but the lettuce was super watery, which made the whole tostada watery, which was annoying. On to the green chili tamale. The tamale was surprisingly spicy. Every "spicy" thing I've had in Denver hasn't really been any more spicy than plain tomato sauce, but this thing had some bite to it! However, I agree with JBH below - it was so spicy that you couldn't taste anything but the heat, which isn't a good thing. I can't even confirm if there was cheese in the green chili and cheese tamale or not. I'm so glad I only got one. Now, for the past few hours I've had a burny tummy ache from that overly spicy tamale. Not cool. If it weren't for the stomach ache, I would've given this place two stars. Even if I only paid three bucks for a meal, I still expect to not feel sick afterwards. Vegetarians: Skip La Casita, and if you must go there, do not get the green chili tamales!

Went here for the first time the other night with my dad and brother. We ate in the restaurant and took food to-go. After reading rave reviews about their tamales online, we ordered some along with green chile. Everything was delicious and the service was great. A few days later and the tamales & green chile I took home still heat up deliciously. Plus, you can't beat the prices. Definitely check out La Casita.

These tamales are our 'home renovation' or 'move' special. Everytime we move (which has been three times in the last six months while our home is being renovated) or do a large DIY part of our home renovation, we pick up a dozen or so red & greens. They're the best in Denver.

I've been going here for years and am glad that the new construction hasn't affected the excellent food. For grab-n-go, get a smothered bean burrito to go. Their green chile is FULL of pork and very tasty. If you're taking home dinner or eating in, smothered tamales with cheese are a total treat. The green chile is rich, flavorful and not overly spicy (not too mild, either).

Hands down the best Tamales I have ever had. They are so moist and flavorful. I always have to get a dozen green chili and pork tamales with green chili on the side. Man just thinking about them makes my mouth water and want some!

This place is so good, I love the tamales and the red chili enchilada stack... My mouth is watering just writing this review (which is always a good sign). The place is very clean and tidy, the service is friendly and great, the food is fantastic. I recommend this restaurant 100%. They have a big patio area which is great for summer time.

Green tamale with a red tamale smothered with chili, cheese and lettuce. for some odd reason they don't do tomatoes?!? My mom loves their tostadas with their tomato and chili piquine salsa it's new Mexican salsa. Their bad ass! Once you know the guys you kind of break their bad ass exterior. I've never sat down and ate here. The waitresses always look pissed and I'd rather not have to tip them.

I love their green chile and cheese!!! If they're too hot, you're too gringo ;) There's one thing I wanna know: Are they ever going to re-open the Berkeley location? Or, is it going to stay a parking lot?

  • Rachel M.

2.5 stars, but I'm rounding up b/c the price is right. Great service. Breakfast burrito was a big disappointment, as was the green chile. The green tamales are great, but the red tamales leave a lot to be desired. I would rather go to tamale kitchen.

  • Philip K.

This one is a really solid four stars. I like the atmosphere. I like that it's so nondescript. I like that you can get 12 tamales for under 10 bucks. I also like that you can get pints of beans, rice and chiles. I tried the enchilada, it was pretty good, but not as good as the green chile tamales. Yum. The green chile sauce was pretty good, but didn't have very much pork in it. No matter though, as it was spicy and tasty. If something says "Deluxe" on the menu, it means it's got cheese and lettuce on it and is smothered with some chile stuff. I would just go with the smothering. They have Tecate on tap. Yay! The tap handle is the iconic red can. Pull the lever! They closed at 7 on a Friday night. I wish they would stay open later so I could get some good tamales late at night too. I wouldn't give this place a five star rating, just because I don't feel like it's complete enough to deserve five, but I will definitely get I'm-too-lazy-to-cook-dinner-tonight-so-let's-just-stop-by-this-place-which-is-five-blocks-away-from-home dinner here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
