Wanted to try a new restaurant since we just moved to the neighborhood and LOVE Mexican food. While the food was smothered in a spicy sauce, everything else seemed blah and to have the same flavors. I would hit nearby Colfax or Federal before coming back here.

I've been eating tamale kitchen since i was in 4th grade ( Sheridan and Mississippi of course). I started at a new store for work and decided to give it a try. I got carne asada fries and it started bad when i rang up my order. $8.50! Are you kidding me.. At the original location they are $5.75. So i think I'll wait see how big it is. Again dissapointment. Not enough fries and the chili tasted too much tomato base. This place sucks dont bother i won't be back.

This place sucks really and I knew that before coming because I've been here before, shame on me I guess. Anyway service and food are below average, at least it's affordable. I gotta quit coming here though, they always piss me off.

This place is a dump. Microwaved my meat for my burrito in a zip lock bag then called the cops on me for asking for a refund. Wouldn't surprise me if they sold crack as well. Total shithole and the owner is scum. Basically made a donation to the place and they refused to give my money back. If I wanted to microwave some shit, I would have just stayed home. Fuck this place. Hope it burns down.

It's a good idea to keep in mind that each tamale kitchen is independently operated and owned. The menu here is different from that of, say, the south Denver location. In my opinion it's one of the better ones. I'm typically here for breakfast burritos. They're on the medium/large side and there are many options. They're great smothered in green or red chili and also can be made with the chili inside when you're ordering to-go. The pork tamales are very good and have good spice. They have many options such as vegetarian, chicken, red or green chili. The restaurant itself is typically clean however it's very rare to find more than a few patrons dining. Most order to-go I guess.

Great vegetarian options & Green Chile. Also the best chile rellenos I have ever had in my life!!!!!

Nice place for a quick bite. It's in the new development across from Sloan Lake, so it has lots of windows overlooking the lake and downtown. The furniture is cool, the music snappy, and the service friendly. The tacos al carbon have a nice flavor, but I don't like it that they fry the tortillas on the grill (they're greasy, and does a beef taco need additional fat?); wish they would just wrap the filling in soft tortillas, like traditional Mexican tacos . I wasn't crazy about their tamales -- they're OK, but I still prefer the ones from La Casita.

Tried this place yesterday, hungry & hungover. The whole time I was eating my veggie tamale, chile relleno, & cheese enchilada I couldn't help but wish I had gone up the street to La Cocinita...but alas we wanted to try something new. BF seemed pretty down with his 1/2 dozen tamales for $5. They don't come with any sauce or anything so he had to get some $2 green chile. I wasn't impressed with my tamale and gave it to the BF. The chile relleno was basically just a green chile, I didn't taste any fried goodness or queso, sadness. The best thing was the enchilada, because how can you f up cheese? The green chile was really hot. 3 stars.

Food is not bad, problem is when they forget stuff in your "to go" order. My bad for not checking, but when you order something and it's not there, BIG bummer.

i recommend this place, for sure-the food is cheap and great and compared to other TK's i have visited, it has fast&friendly service. bonus: you can take your food a few steps outside and chow down on their patio looking out at sloans lake and downtown(the views are across sheridan, but still...) i get cravings for their chile relleno burrito with the red sauce-oh man. also, the mon-wed "dollar menu" is pretty sweet! my only gripe: i'd love a pacifico with my burrito sometimes, but they don't sell beer.

I'm not sure about the three stars here, maybe more like 2.5. I've given tamale kitchen ample opportunity to succeed, and time and again I am left disappointed. The first time, my burrito was cold. The second time they didn't have two of the items I wanted- jalapeño cheese tamales, and they were out of onions. The third time they completely messed up the order, unrealized until we got home- they had forgotten to give us two items in our order. We did go back and get it, and still tipped. This last time, all I wanted was a fajita burrito. But they were out of bell peppers. They also served the guacamole in a plastic cup... How am I supposed to dip out of that? Overall the food quality is ok, but the customer service and training really needs some work. I guess the help wanted sign is fitting. I really want to like them, I do. But each time I leave disappointed.

The reason I am ranking this specific location a one star is because of the service and food. We called to make a pick-up order because it takes us about 20 min. to get to the restaurant. Upon arriving and walking to the counter the man that was assisting us said he has no order for us. We repeated the name and he continues to say, your at the wrong location. We specifically said we heard the person say this location when we called as we already know there are many locations. He said let me take a look. He came back to the counter and said "oh yeah, someone crossed off your name so we didn't make your food, we will have it right out." After another 20 min. The food comes up. Did he offer to take a little off the S30 dollar bill? No. He just said have a good day. After we arrive home we start eating. The breakfast burritos we got were so dry. They did not put barely any or no chili inside them. I was so looking forward to this meal because I've eaten at the one on Mississippi many times. Moving forward I will not be eating at this specific location again. I highly recommend the one off of Mississippi. They are on top of their game. The food tastes great and oddly enough they are cheaper too.

TK prepared a tasty breakfast burrito with decent sized pieces of meaty bacon, browned potato and egg. The green chile was flavorful and mild enough for anyone to enjoy (there is a "hot" option for fire food lovers). Normally my satisfaction with my eating experience would mean I'd definitely return to this establishment, but the exaggeratedly slow service may keep me away. I was one of two customers in the store and I waited over 30 minutes. Also, the restaurant could use a good cleaning.

The best thing we got out of this place was our $ back. Its been 3yrs since eating there. We ordered two menudos and some tacos for the kids all to go. When we got home to eat (in Westminster) we seen they put literally 1 teaspoon of meat in the tacos and the menudo was the worst i've ever had it tasted like lard n fatty and there was no meat in it. Unfortunately it was so bad I made the drive back and fortunately got our $ back and not the cops called as other yelpers said lol We will just stick to tamale kitchen on 104th and on Washington the owner is a friend and the food is way better.

No idea what the bad reviews are all about. I just had the smothered tamale plate with the wife and everything was banging!!!

Wow, it does get worse! Got a dozen Pork & Green Chile tamales to go. They were TINY, but super hot! So hot that all my other senses were gone and instead of enjoying, I was thinking thank God these were small so I could finish them in two bites! What irony! The to-go burritos were bigger, but not because the fillings were more generous, but because the tortilla was too thick! I got two Ham & Eggs breakfast burritos and one bean burrito. I added potatoes to the breakfast ones knowing they were 30 cents extra for each, but I didn't know they'd charge 50 cents extra each for cheese! No wonder the guy was asking if I wanted cheese! But if not for the cheese, the burritos would not have been edible. They were incredibly dry! You know how I mentioned Green Chile a while ago? Interesting I couldn't find any green chile sauce (or gravy if you will) in either the tamales or the burritos, which would've made them taste so much better and more moist. I felt like being ripped off. Will never come back again, at least not to this one!

This is a great location to pick up an order and take home or zip it over to Sloan's Lake to take in the view. Here is what I like best: Their breakfast burritos (smothered of course) are super filling and really tasty. Their tamales are fine if a little 'masa-y' (is that a word), but a great low cost option if you are bringing food to a large party. Nick the owner is one of the most genuinely nice people that I've ever met and you can tell that they are proud to call Edgewater home. Give them a chance and check out their huge menu. Or better yet- Call ahead and have your food ready when you arrive!

  • David M.

So the tamales are just okay, but the green chili here is over the top delicious. I got a smothered breakfast burrito (served all day) with egg, sausage and potato for about 5 bucks and it was everything I could've hoped for. Very friendly staff. Overall a great experience. I'll be back!

Beware they heat their meat up in a zip lock baggie in the microwave and call the police on you when you say you want your money back before you even get your food. How disqusting! We have been to many locations and they all use the grill to cook their meat. Come on ~ rubber meat isn't good! Rip off, total jerks and the most disgusting food! Don't go there because when you complain about the quality of their food, and believe me you will, they call the police on you and keep your money!

Finally Decided to Venture in. And its a great location right across from Sloane's Lake. The Dining are is clean, with Cool Funky Tables. The Menu is big and easily readable. They have Breakfast specials every day of the week. A Option for Family Meals which looks like a great deal. And Desserts. I opted for the Taco Plate. 3 Tacos not sure if they come in hard or soft. I didnt ask but should of. Since Soft Tacos are my preference. They come out packed with Meat and Beans and lettuce and tomato. The taco shells are fresh. Also comes with beans and rice. Im not normally a beans person. But these were good and nicely seasoned. The Rice was moist with corn and delicious as well. They could of added sour cream to the tacos. That would of been a nice addition. The sauce in the cup had a nice little kick to it, but wasnt over powering. After finishing Dinner, I perused the Dessert Menu. And theirs Flan and Some Crispy Cinnamon Nom Noms and Something else I cant pronounce. I went with the FLAN. And its absolutely BLOW YOUR MIND DELICIOUS. They also have a diverse menu with everything from Carne Asada Fries to Burritos and The Famous Smothered Mexican Hamburger.

This place is horrible. Terrible service. Terrible owner. My boyfriend and I came to get a quick bite. I had recommended this place to my boyfriend because he had never had it (everything about this place USED to be great) we went in looked at the menu and from the minute we walked in till about 15 minutes AFTER we decided what we wanted to eat did we get a greeting. Finally we ordered which took another 10 minutes because the cashier had NO idea what she was doing. I asked how big the burritos were she said they were pretty huge in size so I just went with a burrito. She asked if I'd like it smothered I said yes. My boyfriend went with their "taco salad" with chicken. We got our order about 10 minutes later and I had never been so confused in my life.. First of all, my burrito was smaller then a burrito you'd get at a Taco Bell drive thru and it tasted like they had just warmed it up. Also, it was not smothered. My boyfriends taco salad was the smallest taco salad I have ever seen. It literally fit in the palm of his hand. It was cold and had 2 little pieces of chicken. Which he paid around 8 dollars for this "taco salad". When we asked to talk to the owner he was absolutely rude and disrespectful. We told him we had spent a little over 20 dollars for this and kindly asked for a refund. He then threatened to call the cops.. Really!!!!?? Needless to say, we will not be returning to this place. Such a ripoff. Just awful all around!!! Not even worthy of the star I was required to give.

My brother was in town, and we were looking for a place in my area I had not been before. I knew there were some restaurants in the Sloan's Lake area that could fit one of our moods, this is the one we tried. We got a dozen tamale's half pork, half green chilie along with 2 smothered chili rellenos. All in all I enjoyed the food, the tamales were surprisingly spicy, maybe could have a bit more flavor, although the rellenos were probably a better choice taste-wise. The biggest surprise was the $17 bill for what I just described. Honestly I think that is a bit much for what we got, I am not 100% sure what the rellenos cost, but I thought the tamales were around $8. For the portions I did not feel I got my bang for my buck.

Came here on a Saturday at 4pm to pick up 1 dozen green to go. Pretty basic order right? I watched the kitchen staff member text on her phone, then handle the food, then back to text without gloves. Hmm..ok..at least my tamales have a corn husk wrapper. 15 mins of waiting and it appeared that my order was given to the wrong customer who left the premises and returned 10 minutes later stating she had the wrong order. At this point the guy at the counter attempted to hand me the food she just returned at which point I told him I did not want the food that left the building 10 minutes ago, and that I wanted 12 new tamales. He argued with me that the ones that left the building were OK but he would do me the favor of getting new ones. A half hour from when I ordered, I got 12 tamales which I walked outside with and threw in the trash after thinking about the lack of food safety and health standards I witnessed, and picked up to-go at another neighboring establishment instead. They lost my business for good.

I like them :) I also like that hey have vegetarian options. Great area next to Sloan's Lake. Could go to the park eat and relax if you wanted to.

Extremely disappointed in their Tamales. Not enough meat too much dough. Not good at all. I'm considering trying their other food but I'm a bit worried it won't be good. (Judging from the Tamales)

Great place to grab a breakfast burrito to go, made to order and lots of add-ons available. They are big too..mine was basically breakfast, lunch, and a big snack by the time I finally finished it!

Worst Mexican food, over priced garbage took way too long and I was pretty much the only person in there. I would rather drink the water from sloans lake than eat here again.

Happened to be in the area and thought we'd give this place a try.... Because I'm from the south, I love flavorful food, and especially love Mexican. It was not the case here or frankly any other restaurant I've tried in the 3 years I've lived here. We wanted to go with something basic like a quesadilla and asked the girl at the counter if they cooked the chicken with any spices....of course she said "No" with a smile on her face.... And as expected, a very bland flavorless entree with salsa that burned your mouth, but had not actual flavor.I can't figure out why Denver is so against flavor?!

It is a sad day, indeed, friends. For the first time ever, I am Yelping in the negative, rather than positive. I have eaten at Tamale Kitchen #10 in Edgewater several times now. Each time, I leave thinking it was dissatisfying, but that I would try them again because they were so nice. Blerg. I'm not sure I can keep doing this. I went in today and ordered two cheese enchiladas and a side of beans. The beans were average, per usual, but not terrible. Then came the enchiladas. Please note, this is not my first rodeo with Tamale Kitchen's enchiladas, so it's not one of those, "Aww, probably an off day in the kitchen." things. The corn tortillas were dry and they had little cheese inside. To be fair, their enchilada sauce is spicy and pretty yummy, but not yummy enough to save the whole enchilada. (Yeah, I went there.) Another thing that has been consistent with this place is that the food arrives at your table tepid at best. I can SEE the kitchen! You are practically running it to me! WHY is my food cold?! In my opinion it's a flop every time, so you're better off spending your hard-earned money at a tastier joint. After all, the 303 has so many wonderful treats of the Mexican food variety for you try - go out there and explore!

  • Ashley M.

The food is not good and neither is the pork green chile. Tried it once, it was meh. Returned once more and my chile relleno had no cheese. The owner blamed it on his distributor and offered me a bean wrap. C'mon. So you don't even make a simple recipe here? Lame. Spare yourself a let down.

This is a weird little place. It feels like it doesn't fit the setting, like a "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurant feel jammed in an uber-trendy restaurant setting I guess. But whatever, we were starving and they saved our night with tacos - cheap too! Their ground beef tacos are typical and comparable in my mind to taco bell, but the carnitas and chicken were delish! Salsa is pretty smokin' hot so I wasn't able to stomach it. We will be back though to try more of their stuff. Good bang for your buck for sure!

    I like their breakfast burritos.

I've heard such good things about Tamale Kitchens, but this place just doesn't measure up. Tamales are DRY. I was hoping the first time I ordered them was just a fluke, but nope, I went again and they were dry again. Lab rats learn after 3 tries....but this time, it didn't take me 3 times. There will be no 3rd time. :-) Service is slow but I do have much love for the manager, Nick. He has taken care of me and let me order a lot more food than I could afford for work. He was willing to work with my very low non-profit budget to make sure we were taken care of and well-fed. Since then, he always remembers me when I come in. Haven't been there in a while, though, so that may have changed. Good green chili and breakfast burros. For everything else, head up the street to La Cocinita, where they do it better.

  • Rachel M.

Wow, I really ripped into these guys a few years back and I have to say that I'm singing a different tune today. They are always so polite when we come in and they make up each order lickity split. Yes, their green chile is different than most, but I have to say that I'm now addicted to the hot orange lava that smothers their burritos. We eat here a couple times a month, and what can I say, maybe I've even grown to love the decor.

    (5)
  • Nick S.

Look, this place is simple. They have a lot of stuff on their menu, and most of it just does the trick, nothing special. But if you're not giving them 5 stars, it's downright user error. If you want amazing, unique, authentic Denver mexican, you order a breakfast burrito regardless of the time of day, and you order it smothered. Anyone can piece together a burrito, or tamale or whatever, but no one, NO ONE, can touch TK's green chili. It's thick, and orange, and spicy, and....simply amazing! I haven't lived in CO for 5 years now but I miss TK more than I miss my parents! When I go back, it's always my first stop. Not family, not the hill, TK. And before I leave, you'll catch me eating it in the airport before I waltz through security but rest assured, I have a gallon of the orange lava (had to steal that reference from Rachel M it's perfect) frozen in my checked bag to last me a day or two once I'm home again. If you want a chili relleno or something, go to tres margaritas. Here you get a smothered burrito, and a big side of guac to chase it down.

I never thought about giving a place a negative review until my experience at this place. Due to the review guidlines I will not state the reason for the negative rating, however I don't recommend spending your money here if you have other options.

Pretty basic joint. I have always had good luck with the tamales, but I get them to go and steam them to reheat them, like they recommend. They staff are always really nice. Bonus- chilequiles (sp?) are maybe my new favorite hangover breakfast. Bottom line, nothing too special, but fast, polite and good to go. I like to take a dozen or so tamales to work potlucks. My vote is for green.

I love this place, very friendly people and the food is amazing. I love the green chile it's the best I have had in years!! The price is fantastic especially if your low on cash!

We always pass by this place when we take our pit out on weekend. We decided to stop in and it was awesome. The price and the food was great. The food comes out hot but the best is their smothered chimichanga. Just remember to get it smothered inside and out. Sometimes they get packed but they do bring out chips and salsa to the guests that are waiting.

This place is very vegetarian friendly place. Veggie Tamales, Veggie Green Chile and Veggie Red Chile are available, they also have veggie beans. How did I not know about this place sooner? Its very difficult for vegetarians to find such delights! The staff was super friendly and offered advice on how to take the tamales home cold and heat them up later. I took their advice and had them for dinner, they were delicious! Next time I will get the Familia Pack and have some friends over to try a delicious Denver treat.

A decent place to go for tamales, but the rest of the food was just OK. Nothing blew me away, taste-wise, but they do have a very large and enticing menu. I wouldn't NOT come back here, but it also wouldn't be my first choice either... if you know what I mean.

    (3)
  • Patrick R.

I was craving some breakfast food this morning and so went to check out a nearby place, but the wait time was a little longer than we had available, so we popped into Tamale's instead. The inside is clean, metal tables, nice staff. There wasn't much that stood out to me here, but I'm not too concerned with decor when I'm there for the food. I just wanted breakfast, so I only ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese burrito which was pretty tasty. Again, nothing that stood out from other breakfast burritos I've had, but not bad either. My boyfriend ordered something else off the menu which I unfortunately cannot remember the name of, but he LOVED it. He kept going on and on about how tasty it was and I even ended up using some of the sauce from his dish to drizzle on my burrito. I don't know if this is necessarily somewhere I'd make a regular spot for me, but I wouldn't mind going back and trying some more of their lunch items.

Tamales are small, beans are dry, rice is good. Service is good, the people are nice, the food just lacks that needed love.

  • Th'Hollyfelds B.

We really like this location- their food is pretty darn good, and they've always given us great service, even to the point of hand writing out a list of the things that are gluten free on the menu for me! we've only eaten there twice, but we've really enjoyed it both times. Plus, it's cheap!

    (4)
  • Brandon B.

Best tamales in denver. 8 bucks for a dozen and they have green and red chili pork. The green chili is also pretty good, aside from that I just stick with the tamales.

    (4)
  • Lauren S.

I've only ever ordered their family deals on tamales to take home on my way home from work, but have always been satisfied. The price is reasonable for the portions and flavor you get.

  • Adreanna W.

Maybe I'll give it another try in the future. I wasn't too happy with this visit. I asked for the red sauce (supposedly mild) for both my chile relleno and the huevos rancheros. They put the chile on top of the eggs. Something was really REALLY spicy and I couldn't tell if they put the wrong sauce or I'm just too sensitive. The food was also way too salty and I'm a salt fiend! The eggs were cooked perfectly but there was nothing inside the chile relleno. Very disappointed. There are many other Mexican restaurants I'll be trying around this area before I ever go back there.

    (2)
  • Tina F.

I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised by the Tamale Kitchen. The tamales were pretty good (the red ones), and the green chile was really good. Hot and good. This is definitely a candidate for my best green chile list. I'll concede that my tamale tastes lean toward the non-traditional. I really don't like thick layers of masa that more often than not lead to tamales that are dry and tasteless. The tamales at Tamale Kitchen were just right, in my opinion. Not a lot of masa and you could really taste the pork and spices.

Long wait when no one else was there. Breakfast burrito was cold. Green Chile tasted like tomato soup. I won't be coming back.

I hesitated to visit this restaurant based on previous reviews. Well, all I can say is you can't always trust reviews. The steak tacos al carbon were delicious and very lean. No fat. My partner had chicken enchiladas and the red chili was some of the best he's had. I am a Denver native and have eaten Mexican food throughout The area. What you get here for the price is an excellent value. Nick, the owner, is a really nice guy too!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
