I've driven by several times, and always noticed the white building with red trim wondering if it was any good. I was hoping it would be. I got the chance to stop in today, taking a break from house work. I tried the chorizo tacos and my husband tried the asada. I they were both good. My mom was really happy with her relleno, and my dad said the posole was the best he's ever had. They were also fans of the horchata. My step-sons had no complaints about the hamburguesas. All in all, it was good experience, we'll be back.

Maybe I was here early (11:15am) and perhaps the meat was cooked early in the morning. I ordered 5 Asada tacos that I have to say gave me mixed feelings. The first 2 that I ate, the meat was dry and a little tough. I noticed the last 3 tasted better. Maybe it sat on the grill too long. I will try this place again since it was base on 1 item. The nice benefit is Tacos here are only .99

I drive by TacoMex about 5 times a week; until last July it had not been reviewed and I had it on my list to get a first review. My Yelp friend Thomas S. got the first to review honor and he was very complimentary. After a few more months, I decided to change my routine and stop in for a breakfast burrito con jamon. It beat my 7 Express hands down in flavor and size; then there was the salsa bar. I am now sold and have a new favorite breakfast burrito. However, I could not stop there. This brightly decorated restaurant has so much more to offer. Chili Rellanos, ceviche tostada, aquas frescas (I watched these being made the other day and just swayed with the delicious smell of fresh strawberries), tortas, tacos for .99! Need I go on?

Okay so I love Taco Mex and probably go here more than 1 person should...but it's so close to my house and $.99 tacos? Love it! However, do you like cheese, sour cream, and other fun things on your tacos? Then don't go here, b/c that's not what kind of taco place this is. This is real tacos, there are dudes on a grill with a meat spit out in front, there's a lady with a car and CDs she selling from the truck, and this place isn't winning any awards for cleanliness anytime soon. Why go here you ask? Well that's btw you and how you like meat spit.

Having just moved to Denver from Chicago, I have been on a search for my new go-to Mexican joint. Well, I think I found it. My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Friday night and tried several of their 99 cent tacos. We were very impressed with the quality of the tacos. We tried the steak, chicken, chorizo, and pork. Each taco was very flavorful and delicious. I especially loved the fresh cilantro and onions on the tacos. We also tried a horchata, which was creamy and perfect. The meal cost $13 for both of us to eat. Hard to beat that. I definitely would stop here if you are craving some fresh, authentic Mexican for a reasonable price.

Ok, I changed my mind, these tacos rock. The portion of meat is perfect, and the meat is out of this world. Everything is flavored so well, and never fatty. The lengua is always on point and the buche is amazing. The salsas are so fresh, the hot sauce is so good, I love it! And again...for 99 cents, I just don't know what can possibly top Taco Mex.

This place is right next to my university (both a blessing and a curse, but we'll not go into the latter). I always get the el pastor tacos, and some flan. The pastor meat is fabulous; the pineapple really gives the savory pork the extra depth of flavor that it needs. The flan is also great. It's not too sweet, and you can taste the cherry flavor throughout the slice. Sure, the tacos are small, but they're 99 cents. You can easily get full off of eight, and not break the bank. Sure, I've gotten the tamales, and the smothered burrito...but the tacos are where it's at. It's called Tacomex for a reason, and for such a good reason. Happy eating!

The tacos were incredible and they only cost 99 cents. I would never have stopped in except I was with friends. I will be back to try some more.

Que tacos a toda madre! .99 cent tacos at their best! I went for the tacos de tripitas, lengua, al pastor, and cabeza. This place should be recognized for how good the al pastor is. The Inside could be a little bit more welcoming considering how slow it was.

After working up an appetite at the range we find ourselves taking an adventure down Colfax looking for this 4 star yelp Mexican joint we found on our yelp app (gotta love it, use it and appreciate it). We roll up and they are cooking the Pastor on a vertical spit outside on a sidewalk style cart...I'm from Gardena, CA so I'm 100% down for that. So we order inside pretty much every $1 meat taco on the menu...and a wet burrito, against better judgment as I'll go into later. So as we wait with our large Horchata. Creamy, delicious, cold (great ice to horchata ratio) but lacked the cinnamon kick that all horchatas must have. But very satisfying to say the least. Now with receipt in hand I watch as the taco surgeon dips our double stacked tortillas in manteca, the beautifully golden liquid that sits awaiting to flavor anything you have the courage to bless with it's presence or otherwise known as lard. Meats are cut, smashed, corralled then piled on the succulent spheres and away I go plate in hand trying not to indulge before I sit with my awaiting gf. Okay I'll stop with the BS. The tacos all had an eerily similar nutmeg-like after taste and the meat felt under cooked. I like taco meat to have a bit of a char and bounce back texture. These meats were almost tofu if you can imagine that. Lacked a salt kick as well so I found myself almost lost in a land I've frequented almost daily in my life (Gardena is very rich with Hispanic heritage as well as cuisine). Hello wet burrito, and as promised let me pick up from earlier. I've had a wet burrito at Super A's in Santa Ana, CA and I've NEVER had any burrito come in throwing distance of it's flavor and overall greatness. For the benefit of my growing carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms we'll refer to Super A's as "SA's". This burrito had a soggy tortilla, while SA's is almost grilled for a solid structural integrity, so it's not like a gooey tasteless wrapper. The meat is just like the tacos, soft and rather tasteless, while SA's is charred a bit and a perfect carne asada texture with actual meat flavor with a salty after taste. Then they actually put beans and rice inside the burrito...sinful and easy way to short you on meat. Lastly they don't even give you chips or offer them. On a positive (which I always attempt to do), the horchata once again was a highlight. AND for dessert the frescas are all homemade and are REALLY a palate pleaser! I do not prefer cantaloupe and managed to drink half the cup. The watermelon looked good but I let the gf win this one...but she'll lose the war. Overall if you were raised in a Hispanic area and love Mexican food...find a cheap flight to southern California on southwest and don't forget to use YELP!!!

Stop 4 on the November 7th 2009 Taco Tour... With a full belly I bit the bullet and got 2 tacos again. You place your order inside and get a ticket to take outside to where the meats are being cooked. The chorizo was so good! It's cooked in a link and the cook chopped off the end and diced it up and put it on a taco. I also had the tereso. I like the meat a lot better than the super greasy taco shell it was served in. I'd still go back here.

Good Lord, Tacomex, how did you get SO AWESOME? And why have I not discovered you sooner? Driving around looking for a decent Taqueria is a challenge here in Denver. Not because thy're scarce, but because there seems to be one on every corner. So that night, we were driving down Colfax, looking for eats, when I noticed the giant crowd there, and the food truck like setup outside, with the spits of Aul pastor and vats of cooking meats, calling all foodies to dive in. When we got inside, the place was jam-packed with people, really happening. I thought little of it because it was a Friday night. I should have taken more notice. We waited in a crazy-long line to order; and there were no prices listed on the menu. I deeply considered this as waited. However, the staff was incredibly efficient at zooming through what seemed like an unmanageable line upon first glance, and I had to come up with something on the fly. I ordered two chorizo tacos, a jarritos, and a Ceviche Tostada. My husband ordered the tacos al pastor, and we took a seat. Now, the first thing that caught my eye was the salsa bar. I thought I had died and gone to salsa and condiment heaven. They had chipotle salsa, avocado salsa, even a mixed vegetable with jalapenos, pickled in a delicious manner. It was a salsa lover's delight. I was shocked when our whole order came to 13 dollars for my entire 3 person family to eat, and I prayed right then that we hadn't chosen a cheap, inedible dinner. When the food was up, a person taking orders and working the counter brought it to us, and even though we were supposed to have gone outside to the meat spits to get the Al Pastor tacos, the lady went and got them for us, as we did not yet know the drill. The Ceviche tostada was, hands down, the most amazing one I've had in some time, and that takes some doing, as I am a rabid fan of Ceviche. I loved the way they served it between two hard tostadas, making it 100 percent less messy than the open-faced ones at Tacos Y Salsas. The chorizo tacos were also amazing, and my two-year old gobbled up at least half of the food we ordered, which we were never able to get her to do at either Tacos Y Salsas or Tacos Junior. This is the first endorsement. The second endorsement was that the tacos may have looked small, but filled everyone up nicely. They make the tacos on soft corn tortillas, fresh, hot and full of goodness, and double-wrap the tacos in them. After we got done, there was not a drop of salsa or a single shred of taco meat left on anyone's plate...not even the plate of my two-year-old. That's saying a lot for her. The atmosphere was happening, noisy in a good way, and fun. We'll definitely be going back to this place again and again and again.

I had the 99 cent tacos. Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Chorizo. Yummy. These are the perfect size and very tasty. The salsas and condiments are limited but, again, are just right. The atmosphere was festive with lots of bright colors and Christmas decorations. Many people enjoying their lunches. The menu is strange as there are no prices shown. But, "just ask and I will tell what an item costs". Humorous. The one negative is that temperature was way too low inside. Almost cold.

Good tacos and variety of dishes. The carnitas were a bit well done for my liking but good. They have a great salsa bar, but the crappy movie theater chips didn't help me take advantage of them. Bonus: Cheese fries topped by asado and green chile. Ouch. Also love the red and white color scheme, even down to the rocks outside. Nice patio to chill on the nice day. With $1 great tacos and a salsa bar, I can't possibly give less than 4 *s.

On the weekends, I sometimes forget about eating until it is too late and hunger is driving me crazy. I was out running errands on Saturday, when the hunger pangs struck with a vengeance. With nothing in mind, I decided to head east on Colfax until something caught my eye. Suddenly on the right, smoke signals wafted into the blue sky, just behind a white sign that proclaimed...could that be? 99¢ tacos!?!? Slamming a hard right, I pulled into Tacomex, a stand alone building along East Colfax that possibly could have been a fast food chain in a past life. Today it is so much more. Outside, a young man stood under some pop-up awnings, grilling an assortment of meat on one side, while tending to some pastor on the spit grill to his left. The aromas were comforting and inviting. Inside, I found a clean, crisp, and brightly decorated room, filled with live plants and colorful window paintings. Counter service is the preferred mode here. While English is spoken, brushing up on your Spanish is always a good idea when ordering tacos. For those of you who are like me and lack fluency, all you need to know is this phase: "Quisiera {insert quantity - un(a), dos, tres, cuatro, cinco...} tacos de {insert desired meat}, por favor." Repeat if ordering more than one variety of taco. If eating in say "para aqui", if ordering to go say, "para llevar." Finish your interaction with a smiling gracias. You are now prepared to survive in any taqueria. The tacos are on the small side, but they pack a mighty punch. I thought that the cabeza (cow's head) and the lengua (tongue) were pretty delicious, but they were not the stars of this place. Clearly, the standouts were the birria and the pastor. Birria is a dish that I have seen in many traditional Mexican cookbooks, but rarely at Mexican restaurants. It is a stewed meat, made from beef, goat, lamb, or whatever is available (I'm pretty sure they use beef here). The meat is seasoned and marinated overnight with a chile paste and then slow cooked for several hours until the meat is tender and succulent. The result is a taco with tender, juicy meat bursting with flavor. The pastor is possibly the best in Denver (a very competitive field) when it is being made fresh. Al pastor is pork cooked on a spit grill and then shaved, similar to the way gyros are prepared. Tacos al pastor translates as shepherd's tacos. The tender seasoned meat is then combined with pineapple before going into your tortilla, then your belly. When the outdoor cook is present, you order your food inside and then take your receipt to the cook, who will prepare your tacos al pastor on the spot. I highly recommend coming to this place when the outdoor grill is fired up because the al pastor is simply so much better at those times. This place is relatively close to my house, so I am looking forward to plenty of future visits and hopefully a schedule of when the grill cook will be present.

Love at first bite! Now, I'm from Southern California. I KNOW my authentic Mexican tacos and I can be very picky about where I eat them from. However, my Mexican friends who moved to Denver about a year ago recommended this place and their judgement is impeccable! I opted for two lenguas (tongue) and three asadas for dinner. I was also ecstatic to learn that they also had cantaloupe agua fresca! Wow, with the red hot sauce, it was a great after-snowmobiling dinner!

People don't come to my neighborhood for food that often. I don't live in the Highlands, or LoDo, or even in Stapleton. I live, no matter how you slice it, in East Colfax. And. I. Love. It. Living in a largely Hispanic neighborhood has taught me a lot. That old ladies who push kids on bikes are the most generous. That dogs don't expressly "need" leashes. And that "Think outside the bun" means a lot more when you AREN'T talking about Taco Bell. If you're smart, when you "think outside the bun", you'll get in the car and drive east on Colfax until you feel like you absolutely HAVE to lock your doors. Then you'll be in my neighborhood, and you'll be at TacoMex. TacoMex is a Mexican's Mexican restaurant. No one will ask you if you want corn or flour here, and your juice will say Jumex, not Mott's. But you won't be drinking juice. If you're smart, you'll drink a big, icy Styrofoam cup of horchata. and then maybe another. While you're sucking down the horchata, order some tacos. Order them "al pastor," and order them "de tripita" and "de cabeza." If you really want a chicken taco-- go to Taco Bell, cause it'd be a waste of time at TacoMex. The Mariscos are good, and so is the menudo when they have it. The condiment bar is off the hook. Some things aren't great. Huevos Rancheros are usually too dry for me, and Chiles Relleno are too soft. But you can get good huevos at emilio's, and good chiles relleno at santiago's. You came all the way to East Colfax because you're smart enough to know where to find the best damn tacos in town.

We discovered TacoMex during a hungry drive out East Colfax one night looking for a new place to try. The first night that we went, there was counter service inside, and a food truck-looking taco stand outside. We patronized both. Our favorite tacos were the chorizo tacos and the al pastor. We loaded our tacos up with roasted onions, spicy marinated carrots and various salsas from the salsa bar. We'd been lamenting the loss of the salsa bar at El Pollo Loco on Federal. Now we know how stupid we were, because TacoMex is much better in every way. I'd also recommend trying the ceviche tostada. It's loaded with shrimp and avocados, and is dirt cheap. This would be like a $15 plate of ceviche at a place like Tamayo! We also had a torta, which was ok, but I'd definitely stick with the tacos and ceviche tostadas, as the were much better. Tables are sometimes a little dirty, but that's nothing a paper towel or two can't address. Most of the ordering staff is bilingual, which is helpful, because the process of ordering tacos can be a little tricky between in the indoor and outdoor setups, but we figured it out.

This is the best place for $1 tacos, not just at lunch, anytime. They have a fantastic salsa bar, with several types of sauces and "add-ons" that are very tasty. This restaurant sports not just the typical asada, carnitas, and chicken tacos, but also some more "traditional" things like cheek, tongue, intestine, and so on. But they are ALL worth trying!! TacoMex of course has other things than tacos, including an aguas frescas bar, but soon you'll see there is no where better to go for cheap eats on the east-side.

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!! Been here twice and always have a hard time deciding what to order. Both times have been very delicious. They staff is very sweet. I like we can see the man grilling the meat outside. I just looooove the pickled carrots, jalapenos, and onions can't get enough of that stuff. For the amount of food they give you, the prices cannot be beat!!

Can I get a witness?! Tacos Al Pastor! Amen!! I had 3. Then ordered 3 more. These are typico modest street tacos though, it is no huge feat to scarf 6 of these. There were small bits of pineapple in this batch and it was scrumptious. I don't know if the pineapple is always included in the Pastor, or if the lady asked me and I said yes to pineapple (I said "si" to at least one question - no comprendo). Either way, ya can't go wrong. Lots of sauces n' such to experiment with. Interior is comfortable, feels like many California taquerias - and clean! Will take wife and kiddos here for a thrifty, toothsome lunch or dinner. The menu is extensive, many full platos to choose from. $6.50 out the door, full and happy. I shoulda ordered 3 more.

How do you make your mouth, tummy and checking account simultaneously happy? Get thee to Taco Mex. I've visited #1 a few times, but sources say #3 may be just as tasty. I'm not sure what's up with #2. Someone please tell me! I must say, it's hard to beat a .99 taco and I can vouch for the el pastor version, although there's about 10 different varieties to choose from. Double stacked small tacos here, fyi. Best to specify whether you want onions and cilantro on the top (that means you, certain family member) otherwise, it will be served on top and everyone who works there will look at you like you're cray cray when you get worked up about it. I'm a salsa-bar lover, and in this category TMex (that's what I'm going to call it from now on) does not disappoint - fill up on salsa verde, smoky red salsa, guacamole crema, those dastardly roasted jalapenos that I have a love/hate relationship with, pickled onion/carrot salad and some other goodies. The horchata is flavorful and helps quench the flames ignited by the salsas, although the chips appear to be the round bagged variety so nothing special there. The shrimp ceviche is also fresh and tasty, I highly recommend. Apparently we have "runny beans" in this state (according to aforementioned family member) but I didn't think they were weird at all. Just weird that they were served in a styrofoam container. If you play your cards right, you can get out of here with a little more than a fiver. Be sure to grab a booth or a table and soak in the eye-popping (yet super clean) decor. Your paper towels and condiments are on each table, thank you very much. PS. Can I say, I love that you can get a carton of cheez-balls to go?!

I've been in Denver about 9 months now and I still haven't found the taco shop that I so desire. Until last night! This is exactly what I was looking for. They had 1.00 tacos. All the pickled veg and roasted jalapenos as well as 3 different salsas at their taco bar. The service was very friendly and they were all Hispanic folks which I love as well. I don't get tacos from Honkies that are good for a buck ever. They think they can charge more. Mexicans just put a certain love into their tacos. Anyway. I only gave 3 stars because they weren't the best I've ever had but they were good and cheap. I will try some other things there and then reassess my rating.

.99 cent tacos? Yes please. They are tiny cantina style tacos, as they should be, and I find myself eating 3 or 4 before I feel naughty. Al pastor, lengua and chorizo are stand outs, and if there are cooks outside, definitely get your chorizo or pastor from them. Avoid the chicken tacos, because they are sad, boring, and for the weak stomached. Carnitas tacos are hit or miss, sometimes they're great, sometimes you get the bottom of the bowl and the meat is a little tough. I also once ordered 20 tacos of different varieties, and they were great about packing them up, making sure they were separated by meat, and even gave us a ton of cilantro and onions so we could add them ourselves. Also fantastic is the light green condiment on their salsa bar, I think it's avocado crema, but I've never asked, I just slather it all over my tacos. What bums me out about the salsa bar is that the limes are never very juicy, always under ripe and hard to squeeze. Beans are really delicious and fill you up, as they're probably loaded with delicious lard. Sopes are good if you're looking for something a little less taco-related. But hey, the name is TacoMex. Why wouldn't you order the tacos?

Tacomex's food is good. Try it. I'm not saying it's great... (actually, the tacos are, pretty great) but Mexican food is a bit of a religion for me. While I leave tacomex satisfied, and happy with myself, great Mexican food can make one see the light of day, want to praise the heavens for creating such wonderful delights that taste so, so good and are (cardiovasculary speaking ) so, so,so bad for you. Like I said, get the tacos. Con chorizo, lengua, and al pastor are my favorites. I also love the carnitas here. My friends are fans of the cabeza tacos... I'm not quite bold enough for those. The smothered burrito is another of my favorites. This establishment would get 4 stars if the green chile was a little better... It's not bad green chile, just ok. Chile rellenos are good... Skip the nachos though, unless you're on a drunk tacomex run (in which case, they're delicious). Breakfast is solid here, and it's cheap! The horchata here is also good, not great. Somewhere in the middle, I suppose; but great horchata puts new life in me, and tacomex's horchata does not. In summation though, the staff is friendly here, the food is good, and the price is right. Three and 1/2 stars, tie going to the great Mexican meals I've had throughout my life. If they were open right now, I might consider a semi-drunk tacomex run, but it will have to wait.

Great refritos! They taste as if they are cooked with lard, as they should be. The 99 cent tacos looked really good except they were out of carnitas the day I went so I opted for the cheese enchilada plate (hence the refritos). The enchiladas were pretty standard, nothing really special and the green chili tasted more like tomatilla sauce - tasty but not what I would call green chili. They do have some kick-ass sauces at the condiments bar. The service was quick and friendly and the overall atmosphere was fine - however they could turn up the thermostat about 10 degrees as it was freezing inside. Overall I liked TacoMex but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.

Street tacos from this cool little spot for .99 each made the way they are supposed to be 2 mini corn white corn tortillas meat and pico! That's it and that's a damn good taco! Gringos are welcome they treated my big corn fed ass like I was a celebrity, were more then gracious showed me what everything was at the salsa bar! To me I would drop 2.98 on 3 of these taco's then get a meal from some corporate fast food joint! That's why I stop here routinely and get my taco fix!

Love this place! Cheap food that beats any sit down Mexican restaurant in Denver. The tacos are always the way to go, the chile rellano plate was decent but nothing too special. Try all the different tacos and don't be shy with the salsas. My only complaint is that the food never seems to come out piping hot like it should. Service is quick and friendly!

Oh yeah. Finally, an authentic mexican food restaurant. This place is awesome and delicious. You cannot go wrong here. Tacos al pastor. Fantastic.

Thank you Denver Gods for this place!!! All I can say is that I found a somewhat home away from home! For those that familiar with my sadness over Mexican food in Denver I have found a place that took care of me the way SoCal does! I mean good god I went 3x alone last week for lunch, that's GOT to speak volumes! Trip #1: Mexican Street Style Tacos - SO good. ONLY ding is that they didn't make their own tortillas. Trip #2: Chile Relleno - Not bad! HUGE too! And so tasty! Trip #3 (and the clincher): Carne Asada Burrito - WINNER!! WINNER!! WINNER!! Well, after you order it without the rice in it. Homemade flour tortillas. ACTUAL Carne Asada; you MUST understand I've been to a few places that apparently believe that cubed beef is Carne Asada, FOOLS! Refried beans? Yes!!! AWESOME! Although a tad on the salty side however NOM NOM NOM! They have all the fresh fruit drinks and freshly cut & chilled fruit you would find in Mexico. I can't wait to plow through their entire menu! And the service ain't bad either! I am temporarily SAVED!

Tacomex, Tacomex, I...love you!....Yes...I...do! I've been meaning to write a review for this joint, and after seeing the ROTD I was inspired to show some love. I just moved into the 'hood and Tacomex is conveniently located down the street from me. I was first lured in upon noticing a small, but consistent gathering directly outside the restaurant. They have a cook set up underneath a tent that will serve you up some killer tacos, one of which I'm addicted to. Maybe because they consist of the magical ingredients that save me from hangovers the following day? What ever it is, the pork tacos are cooked to perfection, and require no toppings (cheese, sour cream, lettuce, etc) to enjoy. On that note, you can save yourself from an awkward situation by ordering inside. Do not attempt to order from the cook outside under the tent. He doesn't speak a lick of English, unless you count "ticket", which is why you need to order inside...to get your ticket...then take that little ticket outside to the cook in the tent and prepare to be amazed! I also love saying "I told you so"

Tacomex has al pastor that is worth the trip on its own... I mean dayum! These guys are the real deal and they're up there with the mixtas I've had in Chihuahua. Gotta love my neighborhood!

I live near this restaurant and I couldn't be happier. Good food at great prices. $1 tacos (small ones), a clean, honest appearance. This place is *always* busy, always friendly, and quite consistent. So what's good? Everything so far: Chile Relleno, smothered burrito, the tacos, Ceviche, enchiladas, the Sopas, and the oysters were a little frozen, but still good. They also do $4 fruit cups (big ones) covered in lime juice and salt. Yum.

I lived within a few blocks of Taco Mex for an entire year before eating there. Don't make the same mistake I did. Go there now and order the tacos al pastor, chorizo tacos and the ceviche tostada. For the price, you can't beat it.

    (5)
  • Mark M.

Taco Mex on a weekend summer night can't be beat for atmosphere and they also make some pretty mean tacos. Try the pastor (of course), the longaniza and the suadero. For $0.99 you can't go wrong. For the full scoop: denveronaspit.com

Love this place! This is the only place where I will eat Mexican food that I am not making myself. My parents are from Mexico and it's so hard to find anything that comes close to it, but this place tastes like home. Granted this is "fast food" Mexican food and they don't have some of the dishes I grew up with, they do however, have the fantastic 99 cent tacos....mmmm al pastor!

  • Pablo R.

This place is very authentic and the food is to die for. The food taste very good and is about as Mexican as they come. I particularly love their red enchiladas. They taste just like my grandma's. Try this place out, you might feel out of place if your not Mexican but they welcome everyone. Cheers!

We love this place. It's a fast food style Mexican restaurant with full service Mexican restaurant quality. They serve a variety if traditional and Tex Mex style food along with a huge seafood menu as well. We enjoyed the coctel de camarones, civeche tostada, chili relleno, and cheese enchiladas with a bottle of imported coke and a piña water. The fresh salsa bar makes it even more delicious.

This is as authentic as it gets. When my family visits from Colorado Springs we HAVE to go- great food, variety, and the meat is amazing! The staff is very helpful and courteous. I have NO complaints except I live too far to go regularly!

Their carne asada tacos are awesome! The chili cheese fries are also amazing. I like to get a jarritos bottled drink with my meal too!

Bacon breakfast burrito this morning. Very warm staff which is a nice way to start the day. Perfectly wonderful breakfast burrito, could see how this would be great on the way up to skiing/hiking. Tortilla was delicious, eggs cooked perfectly, everything moist, comfort food breakfast. I like bacon crispier but I'm being picky. Would get salsa if you like it spicier/juicier.

I love this place when they have the grills outside. When they are cooking inside I would rate it a 3 star. But when the taco men are out under the tent, it can't be beat for tacos.

I have been missing good Mexican food since I moved to Denver four years ago. The al pastor tacos at taco mex rival about the best I have had. It takes about four tacos to fill up, and a fresas con creme to top off. This is one of my favorite weekend treats, a perfect Saturday lunch!

The bf and I are going to fight after this review cause he thinks this place deserves at most 3 stars, but this joint rocks. They freaken cook their tacos on a rotating meat skewer in the parking lot (oh yeah..if you order certain tacos, you have to go out there and get it w. your receipt). Makes me miss Tijuana. Tacos are $1.00 each and the meat is super soft and they double layer their mini tortillas. The only thing I didn't like was the flavoring. There were chunks of pineapples in my meat, which I know make the meat uber tender but it just messed up the flavor of the tacos. Luckily, I like everything spicy so I douse it w. tapatio. Next time we go there, I'm definitely asking them to char my meat longer. Now, let's talk about the HORCHATA AND CANTALOUPE FRESCAS. Holy crap face it was good. The horchata tasted like creamy ice cream slushy and the frescas was sweet without being overly sweet but I would ask for extra ice to water it down a little bit next time. In the end, this place compared to Super A's in Santa Ana is a 3 star joint but in Denver 4 stars all the way. Oh yeah, the carne asada burrito in green sauce is a super disappointment but I came for the TJ tacos. Lastly, the pickled carrots were great and I just scooped around the bugs. :P

This is me and hubby's "craving" "both agree" spot. No matter what if we are hungry once someone says Taco Mex we head straight there. We always leave a smile on our face. I always get three tacos which is actually 6 because they come with two corn tortillas each and plenty of meat. So you can basically make two out of one. I love the little side bar, we always get a few sides of the avocado sauce (the creamy green one). The Asada and Pastor tacos are our favorites, the Pastor is so full of flavor and the greatest texture! I usually only get one Pastor and 2 Asada because I'm a steak fan. Hubby gets 5 tacos and often we split a side of beans and rice. Their rice reminds me of my grandmothers and she's been making hers since she was a child in Chihuahua Mexico. It's a fast, good, inexpensive meal and we always leave happy. It's really become "our spot" ... I need to remember to check in more! We haven't tried any of their combos yet, once you find something you love it's hard to change. The only thing I would really prefer to see is a soda machine put in. They have individual cans of Coke and Pepsi. And the glass bottles of Coke (hubby's favorite) but it would be most cost effective if they sprang for a soda machine.

Was craving tacos so we decided to stop in here (they have plenty more than just tacos). From the outside, the place isn't super appealing. On the inside... still not super appealing. A little dirty, a little smelly. Gave the following a shot: Pastor - GET THESE! Huge flavor, don't forget your pineapple Asada - dry, overcooked, no flavor, not even salt+pepper Lengua - the tongue was cooked well but missed seasoning Carnitas - hard to be fried pork chunks, pretty good The prices here are hard to beat and it's fast. I'd go back but take out rather than eat in next time. Staff was friendly and funny.

By far since I've moved here from Los Angeles, Taco Mex might be the best here in denver. salsa is good, horchata is amazing, and they Dont have cheese in their burritos/tacos I've ordered the torta de asada recently and it was really tasty and satisfying.

Breakfast all day. Caldo de res is a beef stew soup was tender and delicious. Tacos are now $1.25 and get the Cabeza (beef head) for some tasty mad cow disease.

Best Mexican food in my opinion in the area. Both me and my girlfriend are regulars there. We go at least once or twice a week. We always get the tripas tacos, and deviled shrimp. The enchiladas are always delicious. Recently started getting the chile relleno which is bomb! Highly recommended to try this place.

Went here last night for "Taco Tuesday"... my taco cravings might be a little less easily ignored since this place is only 3 blocks from me. I like how there is someone outside cooking so you can see them preparing your order. The tacos are small but for me thats perfect so I can order a few different kinds. We got the chicken, fried pork, chicharon (sp?), street style... we got a bunch of flavors all I would order again. I like that they have a sauce bar. YOU MUST TRY THE AVOCADO SAUCE! It's the light green and creamy looking one. The onions are also super tasty! and the pineapple juice OMG! DELICIOUS! The atmosphere is nothing fancy but very cozy. It's dated but not dirty. We laughed with the staff over our lack of spanish speaking/understanding abilities. Luckily they also have the tacos listed in English. Think a taco truck street style only TacoMex has more menu options and indoor seating. They also have a few outdoor tables. I'll be back! The only thing keeping them from my 5th star is no beer!

  • Jenifer O.

The only thing good here are their tacos. Try their al pastor tacos, these reminded me so much of back home in california and getting delicious street tacos. Oh and their cheese fries are the best here too! All the other things like their burritos suck here both regular and smothered. Other than that I definitley recommend their delicious tacos.

    (4)
  • Gabby L.

Great simple, authentic, cheap tacos. Make sure to try the pineapple juice too! Most people are turned off by the way the restaurant looks but it is a genuinely delicious experience. Everyone I have taken here loves this restaurant and always wants more!

  • Travis J.

Sadly disappointing. After seeing so many positive reviews, I had hoped for more. Decent selection of combinations, seafood options and tons of meat options for the tacos. Unfortunately it was the execution that fell short. Chile had no flavor. Pastor was fatty, chewy and nowhere near tender. Salsa bar was typical of most taco stands up and down Colfax. While it isn't the worst I've ever had, I definitely won't be back when there are much better options within a few blocks either direction.

One of my favorite real Mexican restaurants in Denver! They have real Mexican food, not TexMex. They Horchata is off the charts good and their pisole is as good as what I have had on Mexico. I can't wait to go back!!!

This is one of my favorite Authentic Mexican restaurants in town. I don't know why I haven't reviewed them until now.... Anyway, this is a great fast Mexican restaurant with all traditional Mexican dishes that are definitely authentic. If you are craving real Mexican, this is the place.

I decided to try this local dive out and find that it's a definite favorite of the Hispanic Community on Colfax. That's always a good sign when it's packed with locals on a Saturday around 6pm. I tried the Tacos al pastor, lengua, and buche. I was very pleased with all of them. The tacos are $1.25 each, not 99 cents. They were worth every penny. The horchata tastes homemade, probably because they use condensed milk and not the gross powder. The salsa bar is ample and you can even take your own pineapple to go with your al pastor tacos. I will definitely be frequenting this place again.

  • Alicia J.

Tacos al Pastor, oh my! This place was highly recommended to me, and my awesome friend took me there for lunch today, and man, I was not disappointed. The tacos al pastor were delicious before I smothered them in their green cilantro sauce. How delicious was this place? Next time I'm going to try the tacos with tongue, head meat and all of the other strange things on the menu. That's not something I do often, but if they can do pastor up this well, I will give them the benefit of the doubt about the rest. And, the horchata? This is not that disgusting powder mixed with milk and water crap you get at a lot of places. This was one of the tastiest, sweetest little drinks I've ever had. Haha, did I say little? The large is, as I quote my lunch partner, bigger than your head. Cheap prices, fantastic food, great salsa bar and amazing company....I can't wait to try so much more.

Some the most authentic Mexican food you can get at the best prices. I seriously cannot say enough about this place I love everything on the menu any here as often as I can. It's hands-down some of the best Mexican food I've had in my entire life ranging from all the tacos, burritos, tortas and even their juices and the Horchata. The salsas are amazing too. Go here you will not regret it.

I do not know if I came in an off day or if it was because it was late, but I had a horrible experience at this restaurant. It started out bad before I even got out of my car and was harassed for change. It got worse when I was harassed twice, another guy as well as the guy from outside, for change inside the restaurant. I ordered an enchilada plate and a couple of the things tasted spoiled. I'm assuming it was the sour cream and the lettuce was tasting off, maybe not spoiled but close. The salsa bar seemed like most of the condiments and sides were out for days. I would stay away. Felt lucky I did not get sick.

Bad service... I ordered a menudo they took forever to bring it over.. the meet pieces were huge, hard and the meet was black and it had a horrible flavor.... talked to the weitres and she was rude she tasted the food from my plate and said to me that I had put a lot of lime .... ???? Really!!!!!! And I got charged $6 for two waters that we didn't even drank ... people don't smile, bad costumer service . I'll make sure I never go there again!!! Shame on them! For the rudeness!

  • Andrew L.

The tacos are $1.25 a piece unless you get the fish or shrimp which are $3 each. I went with my wife and got a fish, a shrimp, a cabeza, a chicken, and one they said was brisket. Those five tacos completely filled us up. I would actually not get the fish or shrimp tacos again. They tasted good, but the other tacos were better and cheaper. The smokey, red chipotle salsa and pickled onions go incredibly well with the tacos. I'm going to have to go back to try some of their non-taco items. It all looked amazing. I was a little annoyed by the partial mariachi band that came through the doors and played for a little while.

I was suprised this place was open on New Years Day. Ive never been disappointed with the food. From the Tacos to the Steak Burritos Smothered of course. They Are big and delicious and perfectly seasoned. The food is always fresh and doesnt take to long to be cooked up and brought to you. The Interior is always clean, even when busy you can always find a seat somewhere. The menu is easy to read and this place always has customers for a reason.

Best pisole I've had anywhere. Food is always great cooked to order. And they even make proper gorditas, pappusa something most "authentic" Mexican food places are missing. Truly a diamond in the rough.

I used to love eating here. Recently the past couple of time I have gone, my order has been wrong or taste like the meat has been reheated to mny times. I am mexican and grew up eating tacos so I know the taste right away. Over all my son loves the cheese fries and my husband loves the agua de horchata and de melon. I will give it 3 stars for that. Would I go back? Yes sure why not? The prices are affordable and the menudo will cure any hang over !

I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend and Courtney B. after a nice long swim. We came at about 11pm and were greeted by al pastor roasting on a spit outside and a jam packed lobby with people looking to get their delicious taco fix. I got two carne asada and two al pastor, and my boyfriend got two chorizo and two al pastor. The chorizo was pretty greasy and salty but tasty in a small amount. The al pastor was so yummy with the pineapple sweetness in it. The carne asada was okay - I could've gone for some more flavor but it could be great if I had used some of the salsas they had there. All 8 tacos cost about $9 overall. This is a great place to come for authentic deliciousness, especially on a warm summer evening.

I have eaten here about a dozen times now. Anything cooked outside on the grill is always awesome- tacos al pastor and the longanisa are my favorite. The lengua and cabeza are very good too. Oysters are reasonably priced and fresh every time I've ordered them.

  • Kenya T.

The best authentic Tacos hands down!!!!! I have tried a couple of Mexican restaurants for there tacos and nothing compares to Taco Mex. I probably order the Asada tacos at least once a week. I am completely addicted sometimes I get the chorizo which is made outside on the grill equally delicious!! The cart of sauces is excellent and you get them yourself so you can choose which ones and how much you want!!! The girls at the counter are super nice and speak English +++++. But I guess I have become a regular also. If you are wanting cheap authentic Mexican food definitely must to try.

Oh man...such a great place! It's usually packed, and everyone in the building starts talking to you in SPanish first, which is always a good sign! Best tacos I've had in Denver...Their asada, lengua, buche, and carnitas tacos are amazing, and their salsas are great too! Plus they give you complimentary pickled onions, spicy carrots, and roasted jalapenos...very tasty and legit (pretty common in California but I have yet to see it much out here...). But the show stopper is the al pastor...sliced off the spit in front of you, oh so good! Very cheap too! Just found out it was a chain recently, and I am not mad about it at all!

Awesome street tacos! Hole in the wall place on Colfax that my husband adores. I've come to love it too. Simple, yet delicious Mexican food. The aqua frescas are delicious. Watermelon is my favorite. They also have a great salsa bar which adds to the yumminess of the tacos. Now I think I'll have to venture out into the cold for lunch, I want tacos!

Came here for a quick lunch off suggestions from yelp. The location is great, packed with people and friendly service. The menu is pretty extensive and it took me awhile to figure out what to get. I eventually went with the 99c tacos, and decided on pollo and carne asada. They were super delicious, but not much in the tacos except meat and cilantro. They were definitely much smaller than I ever imagined, or that I've ever gotten anywhere else, and thus slightly disappointing. However, for 99c, it was not bad. Next time I will know to get like 4-5 tacos for a meal haha. Al pastor is also on the list to try!

East Colfax Taco Tour UYE! Sunday October 30th 2011 organized by our truly Tiffany N. 1st STOP TacoMex 1. Man this placed is indeed burstling with patrons. Long queue and we managed to be seated outside. You order at the counter and the staffs send your order. My order for that afternoon were : * Taco Cabesa ($0.99) * Taco Lengua ($0.99) * Taco Tripa ($2.00) You can get all the salsa and all the "trimmings" at the allocated salsa counter inside. All in all its A-OK Tacos, though I cant deny, since we were seated outside, the weather though sunny but chilly, might "affect" my tastebud. I like the salsa offerings, spicy and has a kick to it. Cant wait to return with Hubs and I hope to be seated inside so perhaps my review might differ.

Love their tacos de lengua!!! Los del pastor aren't my favorite I don't like them with pineapple on there but Los licuados de fresa y platano are sooo good and sweet. For me really what gets me it's the fact that they are open late!!!

Liked, but didn't love what I'd been told was one of the best breakfast burritos in Denver. (Did love the aqua frescas, however, but not enough to up their over-all rating). The burrito, even smothered, was a bit on the dry and bland side. Tried the chorizo and the bacon versions and surprisingly ended up liking the bacon better. (Although, I guess no one's ever really surprised when they like the bacon thing better). Maybe this was an unusual experience, given the number of excellent reviews this place has received in the past (or maybe, IMHO, the place may be a bit over-rated). Will check it out later and get back to you. Hasta la vista, muchachos, D

I'm not sure what they put on my "Asada Plate," as they call it, but it was not good. It was like two slices of boot leather put in a styrofoam container with some lettuce, a very lite amount of what might be called sour cream, and some tortillas. I've read many reviews on this place, and I find nothing of value at this restaurant. The food was just bad is truly the best way I can say this. After eating here, Taco Bell, sounded that much more appetizing.

Authentic Mexican food at great prices. Chicken torta = $6. I was the only white girl in here on a Saturday night, and felt safe and genuinely comfortable. Definitely going back to try the tacos

  • Tiffany N.

Oh man. It's a hard ordering choice at TacoMex 1. Do you get the $1 tacos or do you go for the pozole? Based on my order envy I say you better try the pozole. Sure tacos are good (I mean they are tacos after all) and they are cheap, but the flavors wafting out of that warm bowl of stew are enough to drive a lady mad from desire, forgetting all about the tacos in front of her. But, should you get tacos instead I would say you should go for Al Pastor, but you should really go for it if there is a spit outside roasting the meat when you arrive. There is a ton of space inside here, but it does get super crowded so my vote would be to go during off times (like not right at noon) and your chances of getting a table will be much greater.

I went to Taco Mex one time. The menu is very large as with most Mexican restaurants. A lot of the items are cross-utilized. My girlfriend had tacos. No boxed pre-fried Taco Bell like shells here. She liked them. I can't remember what kind she had. I had a shrimp dish with a red sauce. I think it was cammorones diablo. It was great. I was surprised that this place was any good. It just doesn't look too great from the outside. I guess that's why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. The salsas were fantastic. They had several types. A great selection of house-made delights. They do charge for chip refills, but that didn't stop me from returning to the counter several time. The one gripe I have is that it was dirty. The staff was standing around ignoring the mess. There was only two other customers in the place and we had to search around for a clean table. The restrooms were pretty bad too. I will return in the future.

dry tortillas and mixed yellow and white cheese.. was hoping this place would be a little more authentic. Gonna try something other than this in Aurora and see what I come up with..

Stop #1 on the October 2011 East Colfax Taco Tour UYE! I went a little bit crazy here today, and ordered 6 different tacos. Fortunately, I had a friend to share them with. At a measly $.99 per taco, it is hard not to get a little carried away. The carnitas was not as good I would have liked. It was a tad greasy and not that flavorful, but I would give it a solid B. The al pastor had nice flavor and texture, so I gave it an A. The chorizo was nice and firm, had good spices without being too salty, so it earned an A. The asada was a bit boring and mild, but deserved a B+. The lengua was moist and flavorful, but not that memorable, so I will go A-. The pollo was perhaps the weakest offering, being bland and moist verging on soggy, C+. The horchata was creamy with an aggressive cinnamon flavor. The posole rojo looked very tasty, but I decided to save room for more tacos. The condiment bar was minimal, but the salsas had good flavor. We showed up just before noon on a Sunday, and the place was packed. We shivered in the shade at the outside picnic tables. However, the Sunday crowd lessened by 12:30pm, and we could have grabbed an inside table. The place looks very nice from the outside and the the cleanliness is above average.

I am sure there could be others, but having tried and failed to find proper street tacos multiple times in Denver, I was thrilled to find this spot. They have some of the best pastor tacos I have ever had. This is definitely a lat night spot. They bust out the vertical gyro rotisserie in the parking lot at night and slice the meat off that to make your pastor. It's amazing and they are only 99 cents apiece. These are the best street tacos I have had this side of the border since I left Texas (where I unfortunately lived for two years).

  • Dave M.

They have to have a good salsa bar because the carnitas asada and pastor tacos I had were too dry to get down without salsa but at $1.25 a taco you can feed heavily without spending much

We always get the asada tacos and then sides of rice and beans and you really can't beat it. They have a great salsa bar and the beans are incredible. The service is always quick and friendly even when busy. Good food cheap.

I was recommended to try this place by a customer I was doing a job for. They have great tacos. I had the pastor, asada, and chorizo tacos with chopped onion and cilantro. These tasted great. The tacos are pretty small so I recommend getting 4-5 if you don't get anything but tacos. I did not try the salsas they have, and I regret it...for next time though!

Yummy, authentic Mexican tacos. Al pastor, longaniza, and tripas are my favorite. This place can get packed around 1:30 am on the weekends, but service is pretty fast. Try the aguas frescas. Horchata and melon water are the two I prefer.

Little concerned that no prices are listed on the menu order boards (unless I'm really dense)... but decent Mexican food.

I tracked this restaurant down after several of my visiting coworkers refused to go anywhere else for dinner. For three nights in a row. Once I tried the Al Pastor tacos, straight off the spit outside, I understood why. They were so delicious, and so cheap. The other tacos I had were very good as well. The horchata and agua frescas selection took me right back to my vacation in Mexico city. This is definitely my #1 place for tacos in Denver.

I too added the East Colfax Taco Tour. $.99 a taco. How can you go wrong. My favorite was the chorizo - it had a nice flavor and a good balance of spice. The Al Pastor was nice as well. We had a couple of others and I found them to be average. The place was packed and we had trouble finding seating for the group - which says a lot about a place. It's definitely worth a stop in for some tasty bites.

Dunh da dunnnnnn--OLE! Al Pastor--GET IN MY BELLY! Yeah, I whipped out the tired Austin Powers reference for these tacos. 'Cuz that's where I want em--all six greasy little meat pockets. And that's where I put 'em, along with a long flood of cinnamony horchata. Been here several times for a quick taco fix for cheap & I've also gorged myself on the chorizo and lengua. The Al Pastor is the best, to me. Especially from the guy with the spitfire & griddle. Somehow, my eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my belly with these little suckers. Yeah, I know that this place can seem sketch to some of those venturing out of their white-hood comfort zone, but get over it because it's freaking delicious and you're just being a paranoid cracker. You can always go back to Chipotle tomorrow. Plus, you're not gonna find this kind of love for .99 anywhere 'cept for the 'Fax, if ya hear me.

This place is YUMMY!!! Amazing bean tostadas and tacos. The ceviche tostada is super good and if you get it to go, they give you an extra shell and enough ceviche to make two tostadas. Coke in the bottle made with real sugar. And, the best part is, this place is CHEAP!! You can eat for $5!!!! Who would ever eat at Taco Bell again? Their rice is good too. Yum.

You know I ate at Taco Mex at like 2am once after hookin up with a lesbian from that bar right there C's, good Al Pastor from the guy outside grillin. I snuck out of her house famished and walked back to the bar, looking for a ride and saw tacos. I then spent the next 2 hours trying to get a cab from Saturdays. Thats an interesting little strip on colfax....

I loved the tacos at this place. I ordered 5 tacos, each with a different style of meat. I don't remember what they all were (all were very good), but my favorite was the chicharron. It was so choice. The next day, my dog was in my car and immediately started frantically trying to shove her face between the console and the seat. I remembered feeling like I had dropped some chicharron, but never was able to find it. Luckily for me, my dog has a great sense of smell and no thumbs, because I got to find out that the chicharron is still very good after spending a night under the car seat. Ok, just kidding, I did give it to her for her efforts, but not before a slightly longer than normal hesitation. I think that is going to be my rule for giving out 5 star reviews: if I find the food I had at a place under the car seat, or between the couch cushions and I have to think long and hard about whether or not I'm going to eat it, the place gets 5 from me.

This place is very authentic and the food is to die for. The food taste very good and is about as Mexican as they come. I particularly love their red enchiladas. They taste just like my grandma's. Try this place out, you might feel out of place if your not Mexican but they welcome everyone. Cheers!

Al pastor is my friend. Especially when I've had too much to drunk after watching the Three Twins at the Soiled Dove Underground. Were there three twins? I had too much to drunk. Chorizo is veddy good to me too! and pickled carrots that has halupeenios,a nd onions and vingur and thier salsas is veddy good to me and tastes like that too! The End #5

    (5)
  • Dave M.

They have to have a good salsa bar because the carnitas asada and pastor tacos I had were too dry to get down without salsa but at $1.25 a taco you can feed heavily without spending much

  • John F.

  • Cheryl L.

    (4)
  • Andrea P.

A for effort but the food tasted like any other mexican restaurant. Nothing special and even the tacos were whatever. Would have rather gone to Viva

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
