If your name is Brad and you live in the suburbs with your wife Jennifer, who hocks Mary Kay on the weekdays--busts your b@!!& about the lawn on the weekends, have 2.5 kids and a dog named spot. Stay away, this place is way to awesome for your high brow misguided opinions about what Mexican food should be, stick to Taco Bell, we will all be happier. This place is the real deal, right down to the interior design and the common language spoken. Yeah there is a big green sombrero for those dim wits that just don't get it. I only had the tacos on my first trip here but they were so amazing I went for a second round of fish tacos, also very solid. This is the best Mexican place I have been to north of Albuquerque and east of Winnemucca. Normally I would avoid the Mexican restaurant wedged between two hotels but I'm glad I swung into The Butterfly for a beer or I would have missed something special.

What a shithole! Looks great from the outside and since I now live in Stapleton I've been meaning to come here for a while. Drinks are way overpriced. Margaritas have barely any liquor in them, and food is fair at best. 2 stars instead of 1 because I finished food (haven't eaten since 10am though). Food IS NOT FRESH. It was pretty bad. After clearing our plates, we had to wait a half hour to get a check. Server might have been too busy with the whole 3 tables she had.....sarcasm. Went to restroom before we left. DISGUSTING! All in all, I'm getting the feeling this place is best used as a wedding hall. They have huge unused rooms in the back. Awful food, weak drinks, poor prices, and terrible service. DO NOT GO!

So yummy! Margaritas are awesome, happy hour is great, chips and salsa are bottomless, staff is so so kind, and it has VERY OPEN SEATING. Sat at the bar and watched the basketball games and chatted with the staff. Very pleased with the food and the experience. True Mexican food (and staff), not Americanized at all. Super happy with my choice for dinner and cocktails!

We stayed at the Double Tree, and this place was within walking distance, so we have it a go. The interior was a little dated, but the service was great and the food was awesome! I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area. The margaritas were only$5.50.... Which is better than the hotel prices! The taco salad was great. And the quesadilla too!

Sorry guys. This place is no longer open! Don't try to go here. No signs no food nothing.

**RESTAURANT IS CLOSED** I visited on a Saturday afternoon (May 30, 2015) and a hand-written sign on the door said the restaurant was closed and thanked customers for years of business. You'll have to travel across the freeway to the more expensive La Sandia in the fancy shopping center to get Mexican dishes.

We really liked our food - it was authentic Mexican more so than Tex Mex. The Salsa with the chips was one of the best we have had. I had a "Caldo de Camaron" and it was excellent. Hubby had a salad and it was good. We will be back!

This place is the worst! Casa Bonita has better food. I've lived in the area for a while now and I finally became brave enough to try this place. On the outside, la mariposa looks like a decent place, but when you walk in, it looks like a run down village in with Mexican restaurant decor. But my husband told me not to worry and said "It's Mexican food. How can they fuck it up?" 1st we ordered margaritas. They tasted like lemon water with watered down Tequila. In fact, they were probably as clear as water. It was so disgusting that I made my husband drink mine. He left sober, but hydrated. For some reason, we stuck around for the food. I ordered a smothered chicken burrito. They used canned chicken and didn't even try to disguise the taste with and seasonings. (I don't even think they drained the chicken before putting it in my burrito). I'm not sure what my husband ordered, but he was disgusted as well. At least I'll never be tempted to go to this awful place again.

Pretty decent. I agree with the comment below that bad reviews are from people don't know the difference between authentic Mexican and taco bell.

Mexican food is comfort food, and big Jerome gets comfortable at LA Mariposa. I'm here right now and this dude is playing the hell out of a harp. He just played the theme to The Godfather and that's enough for me to get on Yelp and tell you about it. The margaritas are deep and the carne asada is tender. It won't change your world but if you're in the neighborhood, you won't be disappointed.

It was...ok,and that may be an overstatement people. Party of 4 adults and 4 kids. There was a table next to us that had about 10-11 people. We got there approx 10-15 mins before them. They got appetizers, drinks, chip refills (2x),their meal, the check, and were almost done by the time we even got our food, no lie. We had to damn near leave the table and go look for the waitress to get a reup on chips and salsa. My carne asada was not cooked liked I asked. The kids plates looked pathetic. I was not impressed.

Not recommended. Worst excuse for Mexican food I can recall. Started right from the moment we walked in and noted the carpet probably hasn't been cleaned in years. Re-fried beans were soupy. Daughter had a rotten tomato on her dish. Lettuce was sparse, soggy (whoever heard of Mexican not having a 'lot' of lettuce?). Adult beverage was seriously diluted (certainly not worth $9.50). Our wait person was new, and Ok, but other staff lacked--customers left because they got tired of waiting for service. The fried ice cream for desert? Came in a large edible desert cup, 60% full of whip cream, with small ball of ice cream buried below. Across the spectrum, the restaurant screams of cost cutting and being un/under-invested in. Case in point: tattered menus that were dog-eared, torn, falling apart, and held together by tape. You would be far better served finding food on the east side of Quebec St. rather than here. For a family of 5 (3 children), it was certainly -not- worth the $98 spent including tip (tip only because our waitress did 'her' job). If you read this review (and others) and still eat here, you cannot say you weren't forewarned.

They have Gluten Free menu. I have been coming here as a quick bite before boarding an airplane at Stapleton Airport - over 15 years ago! The food is still as fresh and wonderful - Enchiladas with an horchata - wonderful... it may seem divey - but this great authentic southwester cuisine - highly recommended.

At La Mariposa with a few friends right now... The food was alright, but the server has made the experience absolutely terrible. When I ordered my 2nd margarita, he took the first one away even though it was still half full. My friend ordered fajitas with corn tortillas, and he brought her flour. It wouldn't be a big deal if he had come check on us within the first 10 minutes after we got our food (you would think he'd care how we were doing, especially since someone else ran the food). When he finally did come by with the 2nd margarita I ordered, he literally tried to run away, like he's been doing the entire meal. He's also refused to make eye contact with us the whole time, even though he seems to be very patient with his other servers. I held my hand out to keep him from running away, to see if he could fill up our waters and bring us some chips and salsa (something he said he would bring before we even got the meal). He did, and hasn't been back since. We have been going to the bar for anything we need from that point on. Will not be back here. By the way, we came at 5:30 so our server being busy is not an excuse.

The marquee outside of this restaurant claims to be a margarita house. Do they have margarita's? Yes. Here are my thoughts... If your claim is to be a margarita house, maybe you should have a good margarita! Enough said. Thumbs down

Such terrible service! Sat at bar, restaurant was completely empty with servers on their cell phones and not one single person acknowledged us! 10 minutes later we left....As we walked out I thanked the hostess for the service and she laughed like it was funny.

The booth almost caved in when I sat down, the food was luke warm and the cheese in my chili relleno was still shredded and not even melted. The flavors were bland and it was truly not very good at all. I don't plan on going back.

Great service, very good food. I had the shrimp tacos. They were delish! The salsa was also very tasty and refills were easily obtained.

Just redecorated as Mexican Food and Margarita Bar. The new look, and bar are fresh and a lot more upscale. The menu did shrink but really the best of it remains along with some things that were sorely missing before (carnitas) . We have lived in the Stapleton neighborhood for some time, and honestly and sadly were tired of the flavors, but the new look and foods have us going back every other week. I love the staff and management, I hope the newness helps them thrive.

The food is good. No complaints. The service was efficient enough, but maybe not as friendly as I would like.

Great service, attentive staff. Salsa is great-just the right amount of spicy. Drinks never empty. I had Enchiladas de Espinacas- three soft corn rolled tortillas dipped in green tomatillo sauce filled with spinach, black beans and topped with mexican cheese served with cilantro rice. Large portion, good value. I would return next time I'm in the area.

The food here is boring as all get-out and don't even bother using the check-in offer on facebook for your free sopapilla, as you will just get eye rolls and sighs.

La Mariposa serves up petty standard Mexican food. Their food doesn't stand out in any way, good or bad. I've eaten here a few times many to get my Mexican fix in an area overly populated by various chain food restaurants. While the food doesn't standout it's not a bad choice if staying in one of the local hotels. Like I say the menu fits with 90% of Mexican restaurants though out the USA. For sure it beats chain food. On thing that does stand out are their margaritas, quite tasty. In the end La Mariposa doesn't warrant a special trip, but is a solid choice if in the area.

I ordered fish tacos tonight, and they came out green. I know that they were marinated in a sauce, but the fish was like jerky and very salty. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to say I didn't like the food and wanted something else, so I ate it.... Now I regret it. Stomach all over the place. Never again.

My cousins and I stopped by here while waiting for family who was coming in to the airport an hour behind us. We had time to kill and looked up places to go nearby. Our group decided on La Mariposa after looking on Yelp and hearing about their amazing margaritas. Wow were they strong, and large! They are about 22oz and definitely worth it. During the day they are about $7, however at happy hour they are $2! Good thing it was not happy hour when we went, or we might have been in some trouble picking family up. We couldn't decide what to eat so we had their extra large combination and shared it amongst 3 people. We were all stuffed! The combo came with several different items such as bean and cheese burrito, torta, enchilanda, taco, and a tamale. The staff did not come by and check on us very often, however we were more than happy with what we got. The interior is pretty. This place seemed to be very quiet when we went there, however maybe they get packed during their crazy happy hour specials.

This place is one of those places that provides steady Mexican food. Nothing exciting, but reliably edible when you are in the mood for some comfort food and are not feeling up to or don't have the time or resources to cook. It is also reasonably priced, with really good service. I prefer some of the nearby dive places with more flavorful food, but it can sometimes be hard to get my Hubby on board with that. Enter La Mariposa. Here is a rundown on what we have had their so far: Would order again: Enchiladas with Shredded Beef or Chicken Chimichanga with Shredded Beef or Chicken Tacos Sopapillas - my favorite thing here! Flan Super Meh: guac bean anything (tostada, burrito, etc) So I am sure we will be back, and when I am craving the mashed potatoes of Mexican food, ill be glad I came.

My sister and I went here for queso and drinks. The margaritas were good, and they had a special on sangria which was nice. The food was good too, but we were a bit disappointed with the queso overall. Our servers were friendly and attentive as well, I'll definitely come back and try the guacamole instead.

To call this establishment "vile" would be so understated. Vast seas of low viscous brown bile sold as beans, occassionally interupted by bright orange mealy "rice". Soggy tortillas orignally designed to be crisp, baskets of round factory bought "tortilla" chips. Chimichangas drowing in canned enchilda sauce and a waitress who puts the "bar" in barrio. Really awful.

We've been here several times. While it's nothing to write home about, we've never had bad food either. The owner is always very pleasant but wait staff can be hit and miss. Our most recent waitress wasn't very good, rushing us to order as we sat down and then disappearing for the rest of our visit for the most part to the point that she asked us if we wanted dessert AFTER the owner had brought it to us and we had finished it. Food is typical mexican fare. Fajitas look good and the gf likes them. Refried beans are real and not from a can which is always a plus. Decent flavor, nothing is overwhelmingly spicy. Prices are decent, better than some places and they don't skimp on portions by any means.

I tried this place again because it is in walking distance to my house. The food was bad, as was the mojito and the service. Never again.

  • Peter C.

I really wanted it to be good, I even went back a second and third time because it is close to my work and sometimes its nice to get out and have a meal, take a break. At its worst, you are getting a microwaved plate of old Mexican food, some spots are burnt, dried out, some parts are soggy, lettuces does not fair well in a microwave.... They redid the joint, got a new sign, but forgot that the most important thing is the quality of food!

Warning this review of a mexican restaurant is to also take into account this place is in Denver, not California. This place was recommended to me by the staff of the hotel I was staying at 2 blocks away, so I came in on a rainy, Sunday afternoon to grab a beer or two and a hot meal. The service was quick, and friendly. The food was reasonably priced, but the actual food ... like I said this is Denver and I grew up and live in California so its pretty decent food. There is a separate room for large parties, but the main dining area is smaller in the inside than what it looks like from the outside. I had the chile relano and it wasn't bad at all, but they only offer one one type of beans (refried).

Years ago when I first started working in this area the pickings were slim when it came to food choices. Stapleton shopping across Quebec had yet to be built. I took the ill-advised words of an ex-coworker when he said that this place was not any good, an didn't eat there. A few years later a student came in and when it came lunch time he asked if I wanted to join him for lunch at La Mariposa. I regurgitated the long ago words of advice and he responded "No, no, no, they have the best chili rellanos around". He offered to treat me to lunch to prove his point. Now I have little pride when someone offers to pick up the tab for food and/or drinks so off we were. He was right, the chilli rellanos were very tasty. And I could've kicked myself for actually listening to my ex-coworker who turned out to be a jerk anyway. That in itself should have clued me in. Back to the food - I have only come here for lunch and it is usually busy. The plates are plentiful in selection and size for a reasonable price. The staff is quick and very friendly/professional. Overall a good dining experience. I have been doing damage control resulting from my ex-coworker ever since.

La Mariposa provided exactly what we needed it to. We needed the following: - Oversized, strong margaritas in silly glassware at a reasonable price. - Combination platters with multiple items smothered in cheese. - Energetic, and maybe a little bit nutty, staff. It's a rare day when you set out looking for all of those things, and there's really no telling where you may end up. Well, we ended up at La Mariposa and were pleasently surprised. Now don't get me wrong. If you're looking for really good food and a nice environment, this ain't it, sister. If you're looking to get smashed at noon on a Wednesday, gorge on cheese and have the opportunity for some interesting characters, do it. We all know that some days we look for the former, and some days we need the latter. Don't judge me.

This place ended up giving me a good impression after all was said and done. The interior is pretty, interesting, while it didn't look like your typical Mexican restaurant, it's not going to win any interior decorating awards. I always have to review chips & salsa separately, it's like the precursor to what you can expect your plate to be. They did not come out impressive, looking like chips they picked up at Sam's club, and made the salsa look more like it came out of a plastic bottle. Whether or not it does, I have to admit I liked their salsa pretty well. I was recommended Fajitas or Chili Relleno, since I seem to be on a relleno kick that's what I went with. The rice was cooked well, and the relleno was great. Before I forget, margarita specials at $1.99 until 6pm; an unexpected surprise. Conversation was eating away minutes as we enjoyed another round of margaritas. So we ended up trying their sopapilla, which made for a perfect finale. I am very glad we ordered one to split, those things are pretty huge. While I'm not left raving over the place, I enjoyed the peculiar interior, super sweet waitress, Brenda I believe was her name, and the food was better than I anticipated. Had my hopes been low? Not really, it was a recommended place and it makes for a nice break from some of the other establishments in the area. I'm coming back that's for sure.

I work walking distance from this spot so maybe that's why I keep giving them a chance. Had not had a bad experience here until a couple of weeks ago, went over for a lunch break,on an hour time limit because usually I get in and out in no time. The food is good,I've only had the smothered burrito so I can't speak on any other dishes, its standard for Mexican food. On this occasion my co-worker and I placed our orders with a server that didn't write anything down and was severely confused. My co-worker is allergic to avocado so she ordered a dish that did not list avocado as an ingrediant but the dish came out slathered with the green stuff. I ordered a basic burrito BEEF ONLY and got a giant slab of beans, beef and sour cream sliding off the edge like melting snow. We had to request drink refills, she never brought out our waters and I think the guac that was scraped off my friends chimi ended up on my plate with my snow(sour cream). I noticed they upgraded the 'decor' and changed the menu some (they offer daily specials now) but its still just standard fare.

Of all the bad reviews it sounds like no one had the Menudo. It was outstanding! There were some things about the meal I can overlook, but that was one of the best soups I've had and for that i give 5 stars.

Just went here only an hour ago. NOT impressed! My Dad had the #4, and he said the beans were "watery" and there was not enough inside his burrito & taco. He couldn't finish them, he found them so bad. I had the bean and cheese burrito, and was so hungry I ate it all, but it is nothing to write home about. I can't even remember anything special about it, it was that tasteless. My Mom had the chicken taquitos, which actually came out as tacos... I don't know if Denver doesn't know what taquitos are (small, rolled up tacos) or if her order came out wrong, but she was unimpressed as well. The only good thing about this restaurant was the proximity to our hotel, and the size of the margaritas. The margaritas were HUGE and very good. Unfortunately, we were desperate, and this is what we got for it. If you have the time, go somewhere else!

I ate here last week and was so disappointed that I will never go back. The service on the surface is just o.k., but don't ask for too much. Whenever I check out a mexican restaurant I first order a smothered bean burrito with no cheese and a side of rice. I love cheese but I am cutting my cholesterol and sodium. I ordered this there and asked for lettuce, tomato and onion. The waitress stated the onion would be extra. I asked how much and it is .95 cents extra. Now I know a dollar nowdays is probably equal to a penny 30 years ago but in my opinion it's the principle of the idea that a restaurant should give the customer what they want within reason. Onion is not that expensive and if they are going to be petty, I am saving them money by telling them no cheese on my burrito. For this reason, I left not tip. Their salsa is jarred, their green chili has no spice or hotness to it, overall their food is just a step above taco bell. For these reasons they get one star!

I hate giving bad reviews because it means that I didn't have a good meal, and for someone who loves good food, that's a sad thing! We stopped in to have dinner on our way to the movies, we drive by it all the time and figured it was time to give it a shot. Oh what a sad mistake! When we walked in we thought to ourselves that it looked like a Mexican-themed Denny's restaurant, which honestly didn't bother me too much----I actually have found the best Mexican food is served in restaurants that have little ambiance. The waitstaff seemed preoccupied even though the restaurant wasn't busy and after we got our order in our meal came out in less than 5 minutes, but the food was not good! I simply had chicken enchiladas, rice and beans, ick, it was all pretty bad. My husband had a tamale plate, rice and beans and was not at all impressed. We couldn't leave soon enough. Thank god for the popcorn at the movies after dinner, it saved us that evening! It's cheap yes, but I'd rather pay more and go somewhere else for a better meal!

This place is nothing special. I was in the area getting my car fixed down the street and decided to stop in and have lunch here. Mexican food is my favorite, I could eat it everyday. This place was a disappointment for sure! Benny's is my go-to Mexican Restaurant in Denver... so my expectations are pretty high as far as flavor goes. The chips here were store bought and just heated, the salsa tasted store bought as well. I ordered a bean burrito and a gaucamole tostada. TASTELESS and BLAND. nothing special. The tostada was basically just a little gauc, tomatoes and TON of lettuce on a shell. The burrito was gross. the beans were bland and the sauce was even blander, covered in more lettuce. I asked for more chips before the food even came and didnt get them until after i was finished eating. I then went up to pay and realized the check had an extra meal on it, so I told the cashier and he basically accused me of lying and had to call over the waiteress. Other then that the service was pretty friendly. Not great at all, but friendly. All and all, I would not come back here. MUCH better Mexican food out there.

I guess this is what I should expect when eating at a Mexican establishment outside of Houston. My initial impression of this place was that it must be good since there were so many people inside eating. Must be locals that don't know what good Mexican food is. The chips that were served were of the grocery store variety, and rather stale. Salsa? Meh. I ordered the carne asada which wasnt very good, rather bland. My dinner companions ordered the fajitas, and we all kind of laughed at the serving size that came out. I guess we are all used to the Texas sized portions that we get down there. We thought for a second that maybe they ordered the child's fajitas. Ha. The accompanying tortillas were also of the store variety as well. Final thoughts? If you're used to good Mexican food close to the border, then dont expect to be wow'ed here.

I work at the Stapleton shopping center and I see the big sign for Mariposa's all day long. It's a small traditional Mexican restaurant, but it's not fancy by any means. This is the kind of place where you and your buddies can go to talk and have lunch, but probably not the best choice for a romantic dinner. The food here is also not very fancy, but that doesn't mean that it isn't good. It's just basic Mexican dishes that taste really good. The food is served promptly and its prices are reasonable. You can also order food to go if you so desire. Overall I would recommend this family owned and Colorado based restaurant to anyone who doesn't mind ditching the fancy for good taste.

This place is the worst wanted to try a new place n have a few drinks with my sister let me start by saying the waitress was also the bartender that night that girl had no clue of what she was doing all the drinks where awful!! We had some shrimp with a spicy dip shrimp was rubbery... Would never go back there not even for a free meal...!!

Our waiter was Angel and he was awesome! Friendly, prompt, and didn't even need to write down our orders. We had 6 people and they quickly accommodated us. Table side guacamole was good- jalapeños in it though which made it a bit more spicy than usual. Food was great! Every one we were with enjoyed their meals. Some items were a bit pricy. Margaritas were tasty. I would recommend!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
