File under: Be brave and be rewarded. One thing that we Northsiders are lucky to have is no shortage of good authentic Mexican food joints, especially along Washington in Thornton. A while back, we were cruising for a new place to try, and I suggested La Botana, as we'd driven by it many times, and it usually looked pretty bumpin'. So the first time we went, we parked, walked inside, and were immediately accosted by blaring Mexican hip hop from the juke. As we stood by the door, scanning the crowd of non-gringo faces, it felt like a scene out of a movie where everyone stops their conversation, and turns to glare at the strangers that dare enter their private sanctuary. I'm no stranger to down-and-dirty taco shacks, but I gotta tell you, I felt a bit intimidated. But as soon as we were seated, all that changed, and I realized that it was all in my head. While the clientele may look a bit tough, everyone was supremely cool, from the English-speaking servers that made sure we were comfortable and taken care of throughout our meal, to the hungover old guys hunched at the center bar, taking time from their micheladas to give me a "'Sup" nod as I walked to the restroom. And the food's good, too! The first time I went, I tried the Mexican shrimp cocktail. Not as plentiful with the shrimp as some other places I've tried, but the Clamato-based sauce was tasty, and there were plenty of jalapeno bits floating around, negating any need to add extra hot sauce. I also tried one of their pupusas, and while good, wasn't particularly memorable. The last time I went, I tried a torta de lomo enchilada (a sandwich with a breaded pork cutlet smothered in a slightly-spicy chili paste) and a side of beans, all solid. The menu is expansive and diverse, containing not only a wealth of seafood dishes, but also a number of items geared towards the less adventurous palate (boxed taco shell with ground beef? Check!) But as always, I encourage you to challenge yourself, both with food and preconceptions. You just never know when you'll be surprised... or surprise yourself. Cheers!

A friend and I eat here frquently. We love good Mex food, and this place does not dissapoint. I have tried many different items from the expansive menu, and have found the servings to be generous and tasty. The place is clean, and the servers have always been friendly and efficient. Even though we are usually the only "gringos" in the place, we have always been treated well and felt welcome. If you want good Mex food, go where the Mexicans go!

Came in to get a breakfast burrito for myself and they wouldn't take my card because it was under $5 lucky I had a little cash. The clerk was on the phone the whole time she was helping me. The food was gross...way way to much garlic and mostly potatoes. Won't be going back!

Should be 2 1/2 stars. This is the classic boring Mexican food place. soggy burritos. Not much that stands out here. Not a fan. Lot's of good Mexican places to go to. This is not one of them.

Great costumer service and great prices! I always get a steak burrito or a ham & cheese torta. Everything is absolutely delicious!! And the price is great! Love this place. The renovations really made this place better. Keep it up.

Food is OK, but bland. Green chile was rather tasteless and no heat. Corn tortillas are thick, heavy, and completely without taste. They get a 3 because service was excellent, food was hot and fresh, and i am hoping another visit will prove me wrong.

Came here for the first time. I had a burrito supreme. Pretty standard fare for Denver. The flavors were pretty good. The salsa was good. The burrito was none existence. It was a small tortilla floating in a pool of green chili. I seen some beans floating in there as well. I asked the waitress if that was normal. She said it was. I won't return because everyone has similar Mexican food but for full price meal i want some actual food.

Food is good and drinks are good but one night we went in and they charged us double for all our alcoholic beverages when I asked about the bill the waitress was rude and said "oh do I need to explain it to you" and I said yes and when we got to the drinks she noticed she made an error she corrected our bill I have not been back they have bad service and rude waitresses.

Visited for the second time on a Sunday and boy was it packed! Looks like they recently remodeled the place from the outside but inside looked the same. For as many people were waiting they should have considered expanding the place. I don't know if the man eating next to me was more annoyed then I was since he was eating and I was standing right behind him. There was a small waiting area in the front of the building but it was freezing in there. Food was okay and service the same. I'll probably be back since my husband likes it but it's not my first choice.

it's a tiny place on that corner that i've been noticing. I had decided this would be the place to try the next time i needed a good plate of huevos rancheros. Today was the day for breakfast (desayuno as the menu says) Just a tad weird to be having breakfast next to a bar with tequilas lined up on shelves but whatever. There were two wall mounted TVs blaring telemundo. The food - good coffee. My entree was just okay because it was warm - as if it sat a while before being served. I think they had to wait on the diced potatoes to finish cooking because that was the only side that was actually good hot. I was hungry so I just ate it lukewarm - not terribly satisfying but what the heck the entry came with corn tortillas. The red sauce could have used some chile heat. Our drinks were refilled promptly and the rest of the services was good. I think i'll come back for dinner sometime and i hope my food is served at appropriate temperature then.

After living in the area for 30 years, I tried this place and found great food and service! Honest, authentic Mexican food and friendly staff. When I had workers in to remodel my house, I would order a bag of breakfast burritos at $2 each every few days! That made them happy .

It was good, not great. Went here on accident. We were looking for Los Nogales, but then figured out our friend said Las Palmas, and were already by Los Nogales. Looked up their reviews and decided La Botana had better reviews. The food was good, (too much garlic) service was good. But the sauce for the dishes was a bit bland. Since this is pretty far away from us we won't return.

Let me start, by saying that I am Hispanic and that I have had authentic Mexican food and La Botana Mexican restaurant Is far from it. I expected a lot more than what I got I ordered a shrimp cocktail, to make a long story short it ended up In my toilet after the first bite. Very unsatisfied, will not be returning.

The food is good, my favorite are the shrimp tacos with the tomatillo salsa. The owner is usually there when we go and he's pretty friendly. My one complaint is that service isn't that great. I am never sure who our main server is since we get seated by one, another takes our drink order, another takes our food order, another brings out our food, so if we ask one for let's say water, we don't get it until we ask another server. It's a hassle so we don't end up getting our water, box, tortillas, etc until halfway through the meal.

Well read some of the reviews and wasn't sure about the place. So finally stopped yesterday. Asked the waitress to recommend and had the shrimp tacos, Wow to bad I had waited so long to stop. It wasn't a fancied up dish like downtown places. Great seasonings, came with a tomatillo sauce which I normally despise. Well if you don't like tomatillo obviously people can make it outstanding because I wanted to lick the bowl when finished. It made a good taco great. And the pico was excellent. The chips were fresh and obviously made in-house, the salsa sauce with the chips was good just not enough of it. Not sure who thought it was spicy, I would say mild at best but... heat is relative and I thought I was a gringo soooo? As for the decor you read about, the place is dinky, the bar is a bar, so what's new about a restaurant with a bar in the middle of it. So you are right up against it where ever you sit. But it looked like the bar seats 4 people, not like you are in a crowded bar! The flan for desert, smooth and very tasty. I love a flan that is smooth and they are hard to find, flavor was excellent. The waitresses, awesome, kept stopping by the tables and it was busy. Not an empty seat for very long and it was 2 PM of a Friday afternoon. Going back today to just confirm with a different dish. Only complaint, the parking lot is dinky and tight but that isn't the foods fault. Ok, stopped back by the next day and had the Carnita plate. While not quite as good as the shrimp tacos it was very good as well. Still a 4 only because the green chili was only what I consider good (I set very high standards for green as it is my favorite condiment, main course or dessert!). The Carnita however was cooked like it should be, slow cooked so it is tender, don't even have to pull it apart with a fork just press down on it and it comes apart. Yet sear so it has crispy crunch, caramelized flavor only produced by browning and seasoned so it has a bright pork flavor! Yum is all I can say, mopped up the last of it with the tortilla so none was missed. Beans were ok, guc was ok after some salt. Well done. Parking lot was still small had to go around the block and wait for a place my 1 ton truck would fit.

This place is The Bomb Diggety! I live in Lakewood but was up here getting some work done on my motorcycle at Sun Honda nearby. I asked the guys there where a good place for breakfast was and they recommended this place. I am so glad they did and I WILL be driving all the way up here to come back! I ordered the pork chops and eggs and it came smothered in their amazing green chile with two hot tortillas on the side. I asked for a taste of their chicharron and they brought me a plate full... for free! Awesome food, good prices for good portions and friendly welcoming folks. I can't wait to come back and try some of the other amazing things on their menu. Muchas gracias!!

Terrible. Especially when Tia Maria's is 3 miles away with amazing food. Very little flavor and quality of food seemed poor.

La Botana is pretty good.. not the best.. it's OK. The combo mexican meals are decent, and they have a pretty good green chile plate, but you have to get the homestyle green chile w/ chunks of pork it's pretty good. The decor is typical mexican cantina style, and there is an abundance of Mariachi style music piping over their jukebox. So overall it's pretty good.. but not top notch..

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
