Really enjoyed the food here. We sat out on the back patio next to the space heaters. Despite being a cold night, it was really comfortable. They also offered to provide us with a portable heater to place on the table, which we happily accepted. The enchiladas were delicious and the salsa is the perfect balance of heat and flavor. Others had the carne asada and the chile rellenos, both of which we flavorful and fresh. The only complaint was the chips/salsa/guac that came to the table (under the expectation that this was complimentary) but it showed up on our tab for about $5. If the pre-dinner snacks are not free, please let us decide whether or not we would like to order them.

It was our first trip to el chignon. We were concerned at first - the hostess wasn't the friendliest, and we waited a bit to be greeted by out waiter and get our menus, odd since there seemed to be a few just chatting at the bar. After our waiter came by, though, things went smoothly. We got drinks - the original margarita and the gin drink. Wow - they were both great. For dinner we got a salad with shredded chicken - the salad dressing was too light and not enough chicken, but adding more dressing helped that a lot. The other dinner was pork carnitas with green chile and pickled onions. Amazing. Like fall apart when you get your fork anywhere near it tender. Dessert was nice - a lime pudding with shortbread and raspberry jam. We met the manager after dinner and gave him our feedback - he took 10-15 minutes to talk to us and understand what we were talking about, and told us about the restaurant and some of the reasons for the food choices. Turns out the place is family run, about 7 months old, with grandma coming in to make a few of the dishes and the grandson doing the rest. Got the scoop on brunch too - it's now on my list. We will definitely be back - what a great find!

What a neighborhood gem! From start to finish, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and loved the non "run of the mill" experience. First of all, they do Inventive drinks like no other Mexican restaurant - the four diners in our group each tried a different cocktail and they were all delicious and unique. From a tequila infused with serrano and jalapeno to a spin on a mule complete with copper mug, we couldn't decide which was the favorite. So we ordered another round. I don't think there is a bad choice on the menu. All the proteins were seasoned well and each dish was well balanced. The carnitas was a personal favorite as were the rellenos. The flavors were outstanding and sure enough, when one of the owners swung by our table, he mentioned his mother was in the kitchen using 60 year old recipes! The love shines through. Our friends live in the neighborhood so we decided to walk over due to the close proximity but we'll definitely make an effort to go back on our own. Delish!

Huge fan of the delicious food, beautiful decor and inviting staff. Want to feel like you're over at a friends house for dinner with their secret family recipes on display for you to fill your belly? You've come to the right place. Family owned, local, and most of all yum. If you only came for the service you'd leave full. I suggest making multiple trips to try everything on the menu including the horchata cheesecake.

01APR2015 now at 5 stars HH + dinner was top-of-the-line delicious my only negative is that they now have TVs 24SEP2014 Tortas de Carne! A new, delicious item. A much improved wine list with some bargains (Zardetto Prosecco at $22). The back patio is fun. 18DEC2013 Went for Happy Hour and Dinner. Excellent cocktails. Fresh ingredients and mixed just right. The HH Ceviche was delicious. Fresh fish and just the right amount of time in the acid. But, the Papas Chingon! OMG. These are not "chile cheese fries". These are the best potatoes + chile verde + cheese (a light touch) that you will ever eat. Chuleta for dinner. Pink, as ordered. With a bit a salsa verde and corn. (They have huitlacoche in the kitchen. Ask them to replace the corn with huitlacoche and you will be very happy.) Trio of Little Man ice cream for dessert . 05DEC2013 A solid 4 stars. Very much recommended. The food is handcrafted and in the style of Mexico City. Delicious Mexican (not Tex-Mex) food. + Tostada (carnitas), 2 for $8.50. Excellent. Definitely Mexican style (not Tex-Mex). very different (slightly sweet) taste to the carnitas. + Chips & Salsa - excellent. The chips are cooked after you place your order. + Decor and overall atmosphere. Very clean black and white. Skylights and plenty of windows. + Temperature. 5° F outside and very comfortable inside. + Intimate. Seats 36 inside. "Patio is coming in the Spring". + Cloth napkins. + Halogen PAR 30 pot lights. Good clean white light. + Chairs. Padded. Comfortable. + Flatware. Good weight Oneida. + No TV. Yea! + Service. Attentive. Knowledgeable. + Wi-Fi. Just ask for the password. - Menu font. Horrible choice. Painful to decipher. - Website is broken. Completely. This writeup from Westword is worth reading: blogs.westword.com/cafes… P.S. The food is not "too spicy". You want hot, then go to US Thai in Edgewater.

How many places have you gone to where the first time the food was magnificent. The second time it was okay. And the third time, you wondered why you wasted your time. Well, I can tell you, that after three visits, I will be back for a fourth. This place is consistent in its quality customer service, quality food, and a very diverse menu. And if you're lucky, mama will come out and give you a big hug to thank you for coming to her restaurant. When you watch the staff, they make everyone feel like they are special guests. And the bathrooms are incredibly clean. When the bathrooms are clean, you can feel assured that the kitchen is clean.

There are things that I really enjoy about this place, like the chihuahua artwork in the alcove (I have a chihuahua and believe the painting captured their haughty personality!), the attentive service, and the coziness of the restaurant. And there are things that I don't enjoy, like the prices and small issues. I had the enchiladas verdes, which contained three small corn enchiladas with pulled chicken and smothered in a green chile sauce. They were good, but I am not sure about the $12 price tag. My fiancé had the $15 carnitas which is a meat-centric dish with pickled onions and chile verde sauce underneath and corn tortillas on the side. The meat was tough and was brought back. The waiter did everything right, except charging him for the dish when it came back tough again. The waiter appreciated the feedback and overall was very nice...but we were puzzled by the charge after he admitted there was something wrong with the preparation. Other than that, I noticed that management was very congenial and the tone of the atmosphere was nice. If I go back, I would love to try the ceviche which is not a normal dish served at restaurants around the area and I applaud them for standing out.

I was expecting a lot from this place. The food appetizers on everyone's tables looked great and the staff was nice. Unfortunately, when my $9 salad came, it included approximately 2 tablespoons of quinoa, half a strawberry, and 2 leafs of kale. Terribly disappointed. Would highly suggest going somewhere else. I can't believe they serve this with a straight face.

They make really delicious dishes! Their breakfast is appetizing, their Carne asada is savory, and have some very unique options. Can't recall the name of the coffee, but it's a exclusive and amazing! Drink choices are great, and same with the deserts. Always friendly and helpful.

I love this place!! They treat you like family with excellent service and the food is always outstanding. I have had everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. They also have a very nice private back patio which is perfect to hang out on with a couple of great margs!

Delicious tacos for a very affordable price. I try to see if I can finish six tacos in one sitting every time I go. Even the ground beef ones are amazing, and they offer plenty of different filling options.

Best Mexican food we've had in the Denver area (so far)! We went in for dinner (call ahead for a reservation), and we were not disappointed. Our drinks were delicious, as was the starter of chips and salsa. Those chips... mmm I want some more of those. Anyway, back to our meal. Everything we ordered was amazing! All the dishes were expertly prepared. I love flavor and spice that doesn't burn my tastebuds off, and every dish was unique but yummy. We ordered the churros and some kind of cake for dessert. Wow, the churros! We will definitely go back, oh wait, we made a reservation for lunch the following day so we could enjoy more of their food (lunch doesn't disappoint either).

This place was a awesome find. I heard about this place from the Westword and I'm so glad I saw their ad. I decided to come here with my boyfriend and a couple friends. We went about 7pm on a Saturday night and the tables were all taken but had exactly enough seats for us to sit at the bar. Their menu was small and easy to read. I ended up getting the Carne Asada which was excellent and their Camarones Chingones were amazing as well. Drinks were unique and good but next time I would try to hit happy hour! Awesome place, good food. I would just say to get there a little early to get good seating and to get happy hour too. I would definitely recommend this place and will be back. :)

I went there for the first time on Saturday the food was great the atmosphere was really nice the only complaint I have is their family get seated before the guests they have two hosts working and it wasn't really organized but the food was amazing.

We went to El Chingon on Saturday for a charity event. The staff were all AMAZING! They packed people in to raise money for Safe House Denver. We had a reservation but there wasn't a table so the owner got us drinks. We tried a variety of margaritas and they were all fantastic. The Margarita de Jamaica which is made w/ hibiscus and triple sec was on the sweeter side, I switched to someone more traditional for my second. They are known for the La Pistola which has jalapeno and chile infused tequila, a fan favorite if you like spicy drinks. We all ordered the chicken enchiladas which were recommended to us and they were very good. Their green chile is pretty spicy but I'm also weak in that sense. We were too full but the churros looked AMAZING as well. Very cute atmosphere with a nice outdoor patio in both the front and back. Family owned and fresh ingredients. I highly recommend it!

Traveling and found this place for a Sunday brunch. It was fantastic, the bartender was great and made up drinks for us, and the food was spot on. I had the pan tostadas and they were to die for. The churros with local ice cream? Everyone needs to try!

3.5 star rating if I could. Ambiance gets 4.0 stars. This house-turned-restaurant fits in well with the Highlands vibe. The patio is cozy and inviting. The staff aims to treat you like family. The older woman who owns the restaurant came out to hug each one of us in our group and gave us a big kiss on the cheek. She insisted we call her "Abuelita". The food gets 3.0 stars. I was told the style of cooking is from Mexico City so perhaps I am not attuned to that taste. I ordered the chile rellenos and I expected them to be crispy but they were not. The bisteces plate was OK as well. A little dry but I suppose that is to be expected; it was similar to chicken fried steak but gravy-less. Surprisingly, the sides outshined the main dishes...the papas, refried beans and rice were fantastic. Lots of flavor. The churros were delicious with the Little Man ice cream--definitely would recommend them. I would go back and perhaps try a different dish.

Awesome place! Authentic Mexican food and a dining experience you won't forget for a while. Family owned operated by the Nunez family, exactly what I look for in a "special find". Grandma LaGloria making fantastic Mexican food for her family over the years and the kids bringing it to the public ... with a flare! Everything I've had here is amazing but the Chile Relleno are my favorite. One of my first stops when I'm in Denver ... you won't be disappointed!

We stumbled in here after wandering around the neighborhood for a bit. It was quiet when we got in and our waiter was extremely attentive and friendly. He explained everything (including their weird little "we have a separate menu for every meal of the day so here is all our menus in a pile" menu) and was happy to explain everything. The chips and guac were good, and I don't really LIKE guacamole, so thats saying something. The carnitas tostadas we ordered were AMAZING! The carnitas were ever so slightly dry, but the favor was outstanding. I also got the chorizo and bacon (I had actually ordered the chorizo and beans, but was misheard. minor flub and I think I came out the winner in the end) breakfast burrito which was simply divine. It was spicy and rich. The meats were the star, with egg and potato just rounding it out. The green chili is done in a classic Mexican style, rather than the usual green chili we see in CO, which means its quite a bit brighter, being made with tomatillo and lacks quite a bit of the "slimy" mouth feel you get from relying too much on hatch chilis. I loved the location. The tiny dining are was great while it was quiet, but filled u very fast. The chandelier - made of old bike wheels and dozens, if not hundreds of bike chains - in the middle of the dining room was great and surprisingly fitting to the decor. But I have a serious love for bike parts being repurposed into other things and am kinda biased. I definitely plan on coming back, and bringing friends!

El Chingon is my new go to in Highlands for Mexican Food. Chef David Lopez brings a unique combination of Mexican heritage and classic French training. The result is a combination of traditional Mexican dishes (some that have been in the family for decades) and contemporary interpretations of traditional Mexican. On a few visits, everything's worked. Food with forceful flavor and spicing (but never over the line), good cocktails, and a front-of-house staff that is attentive, welcoming and knowledgable about the food. Even the space -- which is small and difficult -- works well with a cool chandelier in the middle of the room, and eclectic art that pays homage to Mexican-American culture. High points on the food front include house made chips, salsa and guac that stack up against any in town, potatoes with green chili and cheese, a super fresh and flavorful kale salad that's ample to share, green enchiladas, carne asada (either as an entree or as part of the Chingon burrito), carnitas, and the breaded fried steak. Every dish seems well executed, full of flavor and as spicy as it needs to be. Just a few months out of the gate, El Chingon is an asset to a neighborhood that is not wanting for more restaurants.

Super family run restaurant with excellent service. 60-year old chile relleno recipe = yum. I somehow left still hungry after just having the rellenos (so good I could eat 4!), but quite enjoyed the HH margaritas (go for cucumber). Love the large Chihuahua painting from Anthony @ 2914 Coffee & hope it stays! Perfect place to sip drinks on the porch and cozy up to a sustainably sourced & env friendly Mexican restaurant. I'll be back & will get ceviche and try other things. I want to meet granny, who often makes the rellenos, but wasn't there on this night.

The food here is made with so much love it will bring a tear to your eye. Home made uncompromising Mexican food is my favorite and I am no pushover. This place is perfect. The brunch sopes and chorizo gravy and is crazy good. Chilaquiles and eggs is like having breakfast in Guanajuato. The churros are delicate and melt in your mouth. And finishing off with spiced cafe de jolla even left a better taste in my mouth. The warmth of the people who run this place makes me aware that great food is a calling.

This is the best gourmet Mexican food we've ever had. We were very impressed with the service and the menu. Chilies Rellenos and Carnitas were sublime. Fresh chips and tomatillo salsa were all incredible.

I came here with my family last night, and was immediately impressed with the attentive service. Every seat in the house was filled, and there were some people waiting for a table. A busy restaurant is always a good sign, and I absolutely love Mexican food. I had been here one other time for breakfast, but was eagerly anticipating my first dinner experience here. I'm a big fan of carnitas, and since I constantly travel for work I have been able to sample this dish all over the west and southwest US. The deliciously tender pork that melts in your mouth after being pulled apart with a fork (no knives required for this dish), what could be better? So my decision was made as soon as I saw "Chingon Carnitas" at the top of the menu, which also coincided with our server's recommendation. After enjoying a cerveza with my family and fiance, our friendly and attentive server appeared with our food. I was a little underwhelmed with the plate presentation, as there was no beans, rice, or any type of garnish. Just a pork shoulder with a couple of small pickled onion rings. But hey, no big deal really. Carnitas are fine by themselves anyway! I picked up my fork, and was puzzled as my attempt to shred the tender pork was met with a most unexpected result - stiff meat! This slow roasted "tender belly" shoulder was as firm as a well done steak! As a former cook (in a Mexican restaurant no less!), I hardly EVER complain about my food. I think I've only done so a couple of times in my life. But this was so puzzling to me, these stiff carnitas, that I had to say something. My attentive server quickly made the rounds, and after showing him my carnitas, he agree they were most definitely not right. Our server took my plate, and was back 15 min later with a replacement. My dinner companions were finishing off their meals, but we're pretty relaxed about that kind of thing and it really wasn't a big deal. I grabbed my fork, dug in, and... Another well done pork steak!! I attempted to eat a couple of bites, but it just wasn't appetizing. The attentive server came by again, and once more he agreed it wasn't right as he took my carnitas/well done pork steak away. He came back a few minutes later, and said the 2nd shift chef was working that night and thinks he knows what happened. I'm assuming it was just not slow cooked even close to long enough to properly tenderize the meat, but whatever. Our server said churros were on the house due to the mistake, and I said that was not necessary but appreciated. Mistakes happen, and like I said I've worked in the restaurant industry and am very tolerant and willing to forgive. But I was pretty shocked when our bill came and the $15 Chingon Carnitas was on the bill! At this point I was very irritated, but said screw it. We just paid the bill and I left. I will NOT be back, as I think it's just asinine to agree with the customer that their dish was screwed up multiple times, yet still charge them. Everything else looked delicious, and everybody was very friendly and attentive. But I left El Chingon feeling very disappointed last night.

Love the laid back but sophisticated atmosphere. The food is quite delicious and the service is wonderful. However, my favorite thing about this place is probably the drinks. The drinks have some unique flavors but go down easy and smooth. I will definitely be going back.

I'm so happy to see Chingon re-surface over in my 'hood. They have a slick new interior and the same great food. Chef David is a great guy and makes some excellent, fresh dishes. I had the breakfast burrito with locally sourced bacon and chorizo. I can't wait to come back for dinner. My one hope is that they adopt some brunch drink specials like everyone else. $6 mimosas are the only thing keeping me from making this my regular go-to brunch spot.

Where do I start? Looking to try a new local business I needed some tacos so I decided to go to El Chingon. Let's just say that I would have been much better off going to a small taqueria. It was 6.50 for three small street tacos which I can get for a dollar down the street that are better. The carnitas had good flavor but they were not fried like a proper carnitas should be. They should be crispy, not completely soft. It was happy hour and the bartender wasn't even aware of it. I ordered two house margaritas thinking I would get a happy hour price and I found out when the bill came they were 9 dollars a piece. Then she told me that I could have got 4 other specialty margaritas for only $5 a piece. What she should have done it is gave me the $5 deal for what I had ordered. Not happy about that at all. I had to pay extra because she wasn't aware of her own happy hour time. Not to mention the food deals that I missed out on. The bartender was also on her phone the entire time I was there. I will not be back to this place and if you are looking for a happening Mexican food place in the neighborhood go to El Camino.

I wonder if the food is good.. Never even was able to look at their menu. Sat for over 10 minutes waiting for service with no one even looking at us. When I finally asked the hostess if we could have some menus she walked away and came back empty handed telling us our server would be right over. Several more minutes of waiting, we watched our server clean a table, seat a large party there and immediately provide them with menus. This larger party was friends with the bartender, who had time to chat with them but not inquire about if anyone was taking care of us. After this we left. We were excited to try someplace new but after this experience we will find someplace that is interested in actually greeting tables rather than ignoring them.

My new favorite haunt! I had the chicken flautas, a glass of cold sauvignon blanc and churros with Mexican chocolate ice cream to round out my experience. The food was outstanding and the service was equally impressive. I will be back for breakfast next, then dinner, then lunch again, then happy hour... OMG... can't rave enough! I'm leaving full, happy and sufficiently buzzed. I almost hate writing a great review because I want this place to be all mine! Mine mine mine!

You had me at the tostaditos. So, of course I ate several more things. The chile rellenos are amazing. The food is fresh, delicious and made me feel like I just got a hug from the owner. Which I actually did. I wish I had two or three more stomachs. But since I don't, I will have to return.. Very, very soon.

It was our first time there the food was really good. Had the carne asada burrito the steak was cooked perfectly. The salsa was the perfect level of spice not too much heat but not mild either. The chips and salsa are amazing and the guacamole is really fresh. Good beer selection. Nice atmosphere sat on the back patio. Very friendly staff . The chef / one of the family members who owns the restaurant came out and gave us hugs and a kiss on the cheek. They want to make sure you have the best experience possible. And it helps that they are Broncos fans. Highly recommend this place.

We eagerly awaited the opening of Chingon Mexican Bistro in our neighborhood. This is an excellent addition to Tennyson Street in Berkeley and should not be lumped in with all of the Tex-Mex restaurants near by. Chingon is very small but feels comfortable inside, both at the tables and the extensive bar. Very light and open, upscale atmosphere. Well thought out and carefully prepared dishes from a variety of menu(s) (brunch, lunch, dinner, happy-hour/late-night). Open at 11am each day which is a plus. For the meal size, the prices are very reasonable. My only nit, and this is a big one, is that I was charged $2 for a tiny side if green salsa which I requested to go with my Carnitas Tostada. Seriously...?? Also, I understand that they don't want to go the chips & salsa routine as that doesn't fit their style, however they need to offer a small "something" as a starter when you sit down and order drinks. Some sort of signature tid-bit on the table is currently lacking. Fix the charge for a few tablespoons of salsa and bring me something to nibble on as soon as I sit down and Chingon will be worthy of 5 stars.

This family owned and operated restaurant is in a word "awesome". I highly recommend them, they buy and support local, everything is fresh and it is the best green chili around. They have a beautiful bar and Jesse has come up with fantastic specialty cocktails. I will defiantly be back to try every other item on every menu. They also do brunch on the weekend. You defiantly have to try the dessert menu from chef Jamie. Don't miss this gem and I recommend the green chili on everything the carnitas and the breakfast burrito and I am certain that after I try everything else there isn't anything I wouldn't recommend. Chef David is a true artist and I can't wait to try everything.

From the moment we entered, the hospitality and service was some of the best I have ever received. Even though they were short staffed(server was out sick) the GM, Nelson, served us and was attentive and cheerful and we never felt rushed. The food was good and the homemade chips, salsa and guacamole are a great start. Our dinner came out very quick too. Atmosphere was nice, not too busy but it was a Tuesday. I would say the only drawback is not too much on the menu for a young child but ours liked her taco and when they found out it was just her birthday he brought out ice cream with a smile.

Went for brunch with high hopes, but was disappointed. I ordered the chilequiles, which was flavorful, but the beans were bland, and the bacon was horrible. The bacon looked good but was impoosible to chew and had no flavor, like the bacon flavor had bee cooked out of it. I said something to our waitress who was really nice and brought me avocado instead. But overall i thought my dish was mediocre. My boyfriend got the pan tostadas which were actually pretty delicious.

I've known the owner, Lorezno, for a while now and he's always taken care of me and my friends. I told my family about El Chingon and they visited on an night I could not join them. However, they were treated like family even without Lorenzo knowing they were my family. P.S. The Carnitas Rock!!

New favorite for happy hour on Tennyson. Don't make the mistake of missing this spot because of it being hard to notice. Staff places an emphasis on their attention and welcoming nature. Their logo may first come off as a grease plate type restaurant but this is artisan quality at better price. The food is carefully prepared and thought through for taste and presentation. Their drinks are unique and an amazing deal at happy hour. Give it a shot for a modern flare with hometown attitude.

Fantastic new addition to the Denver restaurant scene. It's got a warm, welcoming atmosphere that is comfortable for all. The menu rotates with the season, and is locally sourced. Delicious, upscale Mexican food in a friendly environment with friendly service. Do yourself a favor and have the carnitas tostadas for lunch. Nom.

Four stars for sheer simplicity and truly vegetarian beans. The menu was dull for a veg. But the food was great. I like the use of cotija and Oaxaca cheese. My kids enjoyed quest fill as made as such and my husband loved his taco.. atmosphere is pretty plain, but it is remarkably hard to find a good taco in this town. Not a lot of seating. Awkward server too.. I just lowered the stars for these reasons.

Anyone who states "this is my go to for Mexican food" has never had real Mexican food before. Especially since Northwest Denver has always been a staple for the Latino community with fabulous Mexican restaurants around every corner. That being said, the food I had here was horrid. I ordered chicken tacos with a side of rice which was a total let down. Extra dry chicken, little to no salsa and paper thin corn tortillas(that fell apart) and the rice was ok but not a lot of flavor. For desert we had the churros - took one bite and the middle was raw dough. The restaurant was beautiful and the décor was lovely. As it should be since it took them so long to open their doors.

Neighborhood gem, local hangout, very hospitable! Nelson and Lorenzo are welcoming and remember us each time we step foot in. Valentina and Eleana are charming and fun! The cocktails are creative and the salsa, guac and beans are like none other. Try the ceviche or tostada - very fresh! Count us in as lifers!!! We are hooked.

I'm giving it a three, but it was close to a four. I would still go back and get something different. The drinks were amazing- freshly made and interesting. I got a vodka drink with cucumber and another with hibiscus. I would get them again. I ordered sopas, which I don't think I would get again. The shell was sort of dense and dry and the other ingredients consisted mostly of refried beans with little cheese. I will say that when I was there everyone around us was raving about thier food. My friend got a kale salad and it was really good. I think I just rdered the wrong thing. The staff was super friendly and the waitress was one of the best I have had!

I think a lot of these reviewers are projecting their love of the neighborhood onto this place...it's really just "okay" at best. The dishes are inconsistent, they don't know how to make a drink, meat is often quite dry, flavors are bland, and service is hit or miss. The only reason this place is always crowded is it's location...if it wasn't on Tennyson it'd be out of business by now.

I've been trying go to El Chingon for awhile as it's been too busy. Stopped by today between lunch and dinner and had the place to ourselves. We had the carnitas tacos and they were great! Not too juicy or too dry. My favorite though was the drink. I had La Pistola which I would recommend very much if you like spicy.

From a super welcoming & accommodating hostess, nice waitress, super great Marq's made with fresh lime juice that were great, and Amazing cerviche app, best carne tostada (yes an amazing Tostada, go figure), enchilada as were good too, a bit small portion however. Our second Marq's was all ice & disappointing for the price. Waitress said she comped it but did not, so left a little miffed. Love this place though.

The chicken enchiladas verdes were excellent. The green chili is tomatillo based with no nasty flour/water fillers many of us have been accustomed to. I tried two (Palomita and El Otro Clavo) of the specialty drinks made from fresh squeezed juices and both were amazing. The horchata cheesecake was rediculously good accompanied by French pressed La Olla (?) coffee infused with cane sugar, cocoa, anise, and cinnamon (I think). I will definitely return!

I've been here three times now, and I must say; the food is excellent, the servers are warm and friendly, the ambiance is classy and clean, and the drinks are ridiculous. If you haven't been here yet, why not? Get here now.

We visited a week after they had opened so the slow service was to be expected. The space is small but inviting. Food is pretty good but too hot for us- generally my husband likes it mild and I like it medium. We had chicken enchiladas and a chicken burrito with green chili.

I really wanted this place to be good since it's walking distance for me. But I think perhaps they need some more time to adjust and settle in. We were seated right away but it took a while to get service. We ordered a few drinks and some guacamole. The guac was great but I think they forgot to put cointreau in our margs. They tasted like only tequila and lime juice. I got the chicken enchiladas and the chicken was pretty dry. Also, not a lot of sauce on top. Good beans and rice though. Husband got rellenos and they were actually pretty dang good. The service was sparse and awkward the entire time. Again, I think they are still getting settled so I give them the benefit of the doubt and will come back in a few months.

Very cute restaurant! The food was great, especially the burritos. The prices on the brunch/lunch menu were affordable for such a nice-looking place. The drinks were also delicious, sadly they were a bit pricey. Would love to come back and see some drink specials for brunch!

The food is very good and higher quality entrees then quote a Mexican restaurant. Our server was very nervous and a distraction. The house margarita does not taste very pleasant, however the Jalisco Razorblade is really amazing. The margaritas are $9 and very small quantity, this needs improved.

This place is exceptional! I have tried nearly everything off the late night menu and, unlike most places, their late night menu is substantial and very tasty. The drink selection is robust and their tequilas are some of the best. Both La Gloria mixed drink (rhubarb infused) and their gin drink Otro Clava are unique and flavorful. The michelada had a good kick to it too! The cafe la olla is some of the best I have tasted and is a must. Next visit I want to do lunch and capitalize on the horchata cheesecake-yum!

This is now my favorite mexican place in Denver - yes, the restaurant is small and so you might have to wait a bit, but it's completely worth it. The drinks are fantastic and don't taste too syrup- y like in other mexican restaurants and the food is fresh and delicious!

Not great....I don't really understand the rave reviews and I wouldn't even bother to come back to try again. The margarita tasted like it was just lime juice, very tart. The $15 carnitas was not what I was expecting at all. It was a large, 10 oz, piece of pork, I expected it to be shredded but it was just a big piece of dry overdone meat. There was a tiny circle of green chili underneath the meat and about 5 pickled onions on top and 3 corn tortillas on the side. That was it. I had to use a steak knife to cut off dry pieces of meat, I would have expected carnitas to be tender and tear apart with a fork. The pickled onions were good and gave it the only flavor and I wish there had been more. After reading other reviews about the carnitas, I'm surprised that it's still being cooked the same way, it's still dry and flavorless. One of my dinner companions also ordered the carnitas and was equally disappointed. Also, it's disappointing that they don't offer chips and salsa while you wait, especially with their pricing. And they charged for more sour cream for my friend's burrito. I just don't understand the "upscale" Mexican food concept, maybe if it was amazing but it just wasn't. Sadly for them, I don't expect them to last long as keeping a business open on Tennyson is tough, you really have to win the neighborhood over.

My husband and I went for lunch the day after Xmas. We were close to the only customers there, I think because of the holiday. Anyways, very small menu which offers about 5 different kinds of meat or veggie and you pick the way its prepared (tacos, tostada or burrito). We couldn't decide and asked our waitress what was the most popular, she mentioned the carne asada burrito and mentioned at lunch it was smothered. We decided to split that and carnita tacos. The tacos were tasty and seemed like a good portion size. The burrito on the other hand was very disappointing. It was beans and some meat inside a tortilla with lettuce and tomato on the side. When she dropped it off she said - I'll be right back with the sour cream. Ok. Well, by our account, this isn't smothered. We were thinking the green chili that was on the menu as an "extra". I was very surprised the burrito didn't at least have rice or cheese in it. When the bill came we were charged 2.25 for a side of sour cream that neither of us ordered. She did take it off with no issue. Nothing stood out for us to return. It is a nice atmosphere and friendly service. I did enjoy the chips and salsa.

Went for a NYE lunch. The interior was redone nicely and has a modern feel. Prices were reasonable. The food, however, was a great disappointment. While the salsa was tasty and fresh, the chips were stale. The meat in the pollo asado was very dry and somewhat bland. The bar was full and the place was a little loud to have a conversation. Tacos Jalisco down the street is old school, but much better food in my opinion.

It is always a treat to head to El Chignon for cocktails and either lunch or dinner! The staff is friendly and helpful without being overbearing and the cocktails and food are excellent. The space is cozy and it provides an fantastic, lively neighborhood restaurant that I enjoy. The cocktails are inventive and tasty and the food is high quality and flavorful. From the excellent salsa, guacamole and chips to the carnitas tacos, the burritos and the delightful carnitas and various pork dishes. I've never had a bad or off-meal at El Chingon. Certainly El Chignon is one of the gems of Tennyson street and one that I happily return to often.

Great burritos! The food tastes very fresh and flavorful. Unfortunately the atmosphere and service aren't quite as good as the food. Plus, get rid of the TV's! Who wants to watch an ad for Burger King while eating a delicious, fresh burrito? Anyway, I'd recommend it based on the food.

It's a house turned bar w/ loud TV's (even outside) and we had to leave even on a 9pm weekday. A server answered a call and walked out to guide us in to the un-signed house-like business and once we were seated outside -forgot about us, we even walked out! It really wasn't about the wait, but we didn't even receive a greeting, or menus, or water. We saw a house that looked like a bar with TV's more than a 4.5 restaurant - we were practically the only ones there on a 9pm weekday. We literally walked out after we drove 20 min to go from seeing Yelp reviews. Tip: Make a reservation. They lost a 5-top table when we walked away and no one seemed to notice.

Hands down the best part of our experience was our waiter/bartender and the cocktails. My selection was the cucumber mojito and the hubs got the del norte cocktail. We were both immensely pleased with the drinks. The waiter/bartender was also fabulous and we had a good time chatting with him. We started with the papas with green chili. The potatoes were sliced and fried and then topped with a green chili that the heat crept up on you. By the time we were finished with the app my mouth was a bit on fuego! The chili was really good though and I would definitely get this again. For dinner, the hubs went with the duck confit tacos and I was lucky enough to get the chili rellenos. I say lucky enough because they almost didn't have them made in time for my order. In fact I had ordered the carnitas instead as I was told they weren't available and then the waiter changed my order in the nick of time! My rellenos were good but really pushed the envelope on the salt. The rice was also traditional Spanish style rice but again really salty. I ate all of my meal because the flavors themselves were good but I definitely was sucking down water after we left. The duck confit tacos had a really nice smoky flavor and were tasty. I'm not the hugest fan of duck and couldn't have eaten the whole thing as my entree but the hubs was happy which was all that mattered with that. The only other item was the restaurant was super hot. They had the windows open but no AC and it was almost as hot as the kitchen as we were told. Yikes!

It is so wonderful when a restaurant succeeds on so many levels.... -The atmosphere is wonderful and intimate. I recommend backyard seating. -The cocktail menu changes often, but I've been impressed every time. Their bartender is killing it! -The menu....oh, the deliciousness. We will be returning time and time again to work our way through all the delicious options. -Reasonably priced, friendly non-pretentious atmosphere, great food.

This might be the single best Mexican restaurant in Denver. Friendly, authentic, atmosphere, great drinks, patio is great, and then the food. Not Texmex. Not boring mountain-mex. it's I'm-on-a-vacation-in-Mexico-and-stumbled-upon-it mex. carnitas tacos and guacamole are off the charts.

***FIVE STAR REVIEW** I have heard all the good stories and recommendations for El Chingon but for whatever reason waited to try it out till just recently. Not a wise idea. Go to El Chingon-- TODAY! your tummy will thank you for it. Executive Chef David Lopez has created a true upscale Mexican Bistro. The inside is decorated tastefully but relaxed with a great authentic feel of Mexico and the real culture there. Service= 5 stars. Knowledgeable, friendly, easy going and efficient staff from the hostess to bar. Food= 6 stars- seriously Check their Instagram or Twitter feed for previews of nightly fresh catch specials. instagram.com/elchingonb… instagram.com/chefdavidl… I happened to see the post Chef David had of fresh Mako Shark he was planning to serve for the evening's Shark Taco entree and finaly decided to go sample and support. PRO TIP: La Pistola Margarita ain't no joke! Spicy and refreshing Thinking a return to El Chingon is in my near future...

Start with the chips and quac/salsa sampler. If you're wanting something on the lighter side, the Kale salad with chicken is amazing with the balsamic dressing, strawberries and quinoa. The barbracoa and the chicken tacos are very good. I also really enjoy their selection of margs. This is a great place to go if you're craving Mexican, but want something more on the lighter side of the spectrum.

Worst Service Ever! My friends and I attempted to eat at this Restaurant last night. We were greated by a pleasant hostess who promptly attempted to to seat us at a table right inside the door. As we prepared to sit down, and incredibly rude Server - ran to the table at told us it was already taken and we needed to get out of his way. The table certainly didn't appear to be occupied unless people are now invisible. As we tried to move away from this incredibly bullish man, he literally pushed me out of the way with his rear-end. He then began to raise his voice about the hostess and how this was all her fault. We asked for another table but the hostess took off to look for another table and never returned. Clearly, we were not welcome nor treated as customers. All four of use moved outside to regroup - the waiter followed us out and was still attempting to belittle and blame the hostess. Not once did he attempt to remedy the situation, apologize for the mix up or help to find a better. We are all home owners who live within walking distance to this restaurant. I will never attempt to return to this place - the service was offensive. There are no shortage of great restaurants on Tennyson that I will continue to frequent but never again at this place.

Service is fantastic, they spend time paying attention to the details, which is a far cry from what you may get from some of the other restaurants on Tennyson. Feels like walking into a long lost friend's house. The fresh made chips and salsa are tasty. The chips come out lightly oiled and warm, the salsa has a mild lingering spice. The food is interesting and local. I ordered the pollo borracha and my husband got the sopas. Both were hearty and flavorful. This is exactly what you would want your neighborhood restaurant to be. Service is quick, food is fresh and good, the bar is nice.

Amazing food here! There grandmother's recipes give this Mexican food a unique flavor. You can taste the love they put into the food. The owners and staff are so friendly it would seem impossible to not have a good time here. There is also patio is back and breakfast service. Do yourself a favor and explore this restaurant.

Their cocktails are wonderful, fun and fresh renditions of the traditional margarita. The mexican food is very authentic and has been different every time I've been in. The staff is so friendly, and you feel like you're at home rather than in a restaurant!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! Food was great. I personally enjoyed the Carnita. The pork shoulder was tender and flavorful. This family owned restaurant has incredible service , food and atmosphere. Food is all natural, no hormones, fresh and prepared daily. The owners, servers and staff were exceptional in their service. And I mean exceptional. We were treated like family and were truly taken care of as guests not just a customer. First time visit but will definitely be back and bringing others with us.

Mark, the weekend bartender, is extremely knowledgeable and was great company to talk to about the history of liquors and drinks. We shared the chips and guacamole then I ordered the carnitas tacos and my boyfriend ordered the chicharrones burrito - all was great. Wish the menu was larger but nonetheless, this is a good place Tennyson has to offer.

This place was good, but the prices are crazy. For an app, one alcoholic beverage and an entree, it was $45. Id love to support this place, but not at that price. The drinks are really overpriced.

We were looking for a grown-up meal while our children were with friends for the night and scored a front porch table at El Chingon! The food and drinks were delicious and fresh and our waiter was so much fun to talk with. Perfect date night meal! Can't wait to return for brunch.

The food is excellent. Delicious burritos, the green enchiladas dreamy. Happy hours drinks are unique and well priced. Now the downside; there's no air conditioning and happy hour on Friday was full of screaming babies. Save this place for the cooler months when the kids are at home.

Cool concept, enjoyable interior, fun looking patio and awesome shrimp tacos. Not sure if we came in at a bad time, but the late night menu (aside from the shrimp tacos) was pretty bad. To top it off the bartender working was personable, but not aware of his service and seemed to be trying a tad too hard to be funny. He actually offended another bar guest by calling her "kid" although she was clearly his senior. I would be interested in checking out the dinner menu, as of now though El Chingon gets 2 stars.

Great food. Great service. Good atmosphere. I had a del Norte cocktail, shared papas for the appetizer and the duck confit tacos all of which were delicious. The tacos had a smokey earthy quality to them which was quite nice. The service was great and the feel of the place was super friendly. My wife and I sat inside which in hindsight was a bad idea due to how hot the front of the house got with the setting sun. I'd recommend sitting on the patio or going after 8 pm on a sunny day.

It truly was an incredible dining experience! From the owner to the hostess & everyone in between, treated us like we had been long time family friends. The food was presented wonderfully, top notch quality, clean, fresh, they support other local businesses and overall delicious!!! We will be back soon! Thank you to El Chingon for tremendous food & service.

Wow, I was so impressed and am kicking myself for waiting so long to try this place! My husband and I came in on a whim on a Wednesday night, it was about half full and we were greeted and seated right away. Our server Phil was friendly and gave us good recommendations and history of the chief and their food. I had enchiladas and the hubby had carnitas. We were amazed. The freshness, taste and tenderness of the carnitas were second to none. Literally it falls apart in deliciousness. AND is was a GIANT piece of meat, and for only $15?!? Impressive. My enchiladas were superb, the sauce was just enough spice and I love the green tomatillo sauce. Ramon, the chef, came out to talk which was a nice treat, and we heard about his cooking history and his mothers background. This is real D.F. light, refreshing, delicious. Next time we are coming back for the carne asada and the sopes :)

Have you read tons of terrific yelp reviews on a place and gotten excited about it and then when you get there you wonder if you're at the same place? That's our take on El Chingon. 3 unrelated, not-good things: our waitress(and everyone else that came by our table) seemed unhappy to be there, our table was sticky, and happy hour food options stink for vegetarians. (But then again, the dinner menu pretty much stinks for vegetarians, as well.) 2 good things: the $2 Modelo was cold, and the salsa was spicy and pretty delicious(I even put it on the awful flavorless unripe "heirloom tomato" appetizer to help choke 'em down), so I guess I'll give them a 2nd star just for those things. Final complaint: the chips&salsa took forever to come out, and we were told it's because everything is made to order, "even the chips." Sounds great, right? Well, we might have actually believed it... if the chips were even remotely warm. They weren't, we don't, and we won't soon be back to ol' El Chingon.

I don't usually post reviews, but this one is worth the time and effort!! So thoroughly impressed- great (albeit cozy) atmosphere, attentive staff (who know their menu) and in.cred.i.ble. eats and libations. I'm so full, but can't help dreaming of the chips, guac, enchiladas verdes, and melt-in-my-mouth churros...with Little Man Dulce de Leche ice cream. Topped off with cocktails like I've never had. Creative and incredibly satisfying... I mean, there is chipotle in my glass, people!! And somehow it works!!! Unbelievable. I would liken the hospitality to that in Italy- family owned and run and the pride shows!! They put the love in food. New favorite spot... No question!

YUMMM!! I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. A group of us strolled in after bar crawling on Tennyson, and the staff was incredibly accommodating. We were in the mood for spicy margaritas and our server brought us something that fit the bill perfectly. I chowed down on chips and guac, while others enjoyed a variety of menu items. Everyone left full and happy!

Go for the house Michelada - I don't know if it's still on the menu, but it's worth it to ask the bartender to make it for you. Great flavor and made with Modelo Negro (which you get the rest of the bottle to top off your drink as you go). Last time I went, the bartender (Valentina) was super friendly, and chatted with my sister-in-law and I the entire time we were at the bar. I love that - the whole reason I sit at the bar is so I can interact with other people, and she was incredibly fun and attentive. Our waters were never empty, and she checked in to make sure we were good on food and drinks. As far as the food goes, I've only tried a couple things. My brother ordered the smothered chicken burrito, and the chicken tasted ah-mazing. I don't know if they smoke it or just spice it really well, but it had really good flavor - I almost had to order my own. I've also had one of the salads, which was filling and had a good dressing. The only thing I would change would be to make it with mixed greens instead of romaine, but it was still good. I'll definitely be back to try more of their food, and to get my Michelada fix!

Went here for a friends birthday and they were very accommodating to fit a larger party of 14. It is a fairly small dining area so we took up most of the room. I had a margarita and it was really good (and strong) for dinner I had the carnitas and it was delicious. It was a big chunk meat topped with sauce and a few picked onions that were also really good. It came with a good portion of rice and beans. Overall, I was really pleased with the portion, price and quality. They gave my friend churros and ice cream for her dessert and (I think) the owners mom is one of the chefs and she came and serenaded happy birthday in Spanish then English. She then came around and have everyone a kiss on the cheek. It was adorable. Definitely check this place out!!!!

I'm torn. I liked the Arvada location and the family that owns this restaurant is very cool. The new digs are very nice and the new patio that they recently opened is going to be a hit. I've only eaten here once although I've meant to check them out for quite a while now. I ordered the rellenos this time because if you're going to show your skills in the kitchen, I feel a simple relleno is a good vehicle to do it with. The rellenos came out and the server poured the small metal server of the "el caldillo de jitomate" over the dish. Nice touch but really not an amazing but rather a decent presentation. The rellenos and rice it was served with were good. I guess my problem is that I'm also an OG Denver northsider. Chingon means badass! i.e. "You wanna throw some chingasos with me puta madre?" The flavors although good weren't "badass". It doesn't have to have chile heat to be badass but it needs to have a "I'll punch you in your MF'ing mouth!" kind of flavor punch for me to consider it badass. No doubt, the gringos will swoon over this uppity fare but if I were bragging about the size of my cojones, I would want to show everyone my corazón y machismo on a plate. Bring it homies! yeah, i'm a silly ass OG northsider. What the fuck do I know. Just speaking from the heart to people I felt have a lot of heart. Bueno fortuna ECMB.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
