Happened to be walking by last night (a Tuesday night)... and this bar was COMPLETELY empty. So me and 4 friends decided to give it a shot. It was... meh. We sat at the bar and look over to see Frozen playing on a large projector. Maybe its a good movie, I don't know. But I definitely don't go to bars on a Tuesday night to watch f-ing Disney movies and apparently no one else does either because the place was a ghost town. We asked if they could turn it off and maybe put on music and she said No. So we left. Also, the bathrooms were super disgusting and the doors were all broken. I will definitely NOT be coming back to this place.

Great Dive Bar! We have been in here before and after Rockies games and always have a great time. The owner Matt is super nice and always hangs out and chats with us when we are in there during non-busy times. Nothing fancy, just a fun local bar.

A wonderful local bar in the ballpark area with a super friendly staff. The best karaoke in town on the weekends. A true five star dive bar!

We walked by this dive bar on Saturday night looking to go to another bar. We heard the karaoke through the open door and decided to turn back. What a great idea! The drinks are cheap, the songs are fun, the dance floor is large. This is the ultimate dive bar. The crowd was lively for karaoke and it felt like we were at some kind of party. This place is a great time!

This is a dive bar in LoDo that is differentiated in that it has karaoke. The people get into it and really make it fun. The drinks are pretty cheap but I wish the bartenders would pay a little more attention to the order of who was at the bar. In the end, it's a great stop along if you're jumping around different bars.

There's a reason this place rates high! Karaoke, PBR/shot $5 combo and awesome games! This place is your ticket for a night to start right for fun in Denver! They have a pool table in the back and blow up guitars for those killer karaoke songs that you need some live action during those dank mixes! Connect four is my go to game while we wait for our jam. Please enjoy this place responsibly... As it is was to much fun!

There are two reasons to come to El Charrtio, and they're related. People watching, and Karaoke. This place seriously has some of the weirdest, most wonderful characters coming together and singing everything from country to queen and everything in-between. It's divey, it's crowded, and it's well-worn. But damned if you don't get a couple drinks down you and suddenly that stage looks like the warmest, most welcoming place in the whole ballpark 'hood. If you're out and want to sing, this is your bar. I have heard some pretty terrible renditions of classics, and not only are people not booed, they are embraced. You appreciate the quirky characters and just shoot your friend a look like "is this really happening?"... and next thing you know, it's your turn to take the stage!

This is my favorite karaoke bar in town. Karaoke is Friday and Saturday nights, and the occasional Tuesday night (punk rock karaoke). The sound is great and most songs are up-beat, so it tends to be more fun that most karaoke bars I've been to. On a Friday or Saturday night, be ready to sing, or at least dance to someone else singing. They have live music and comedy at other times, though I'm not familiar with that. The bartenders make good drinks and the menu has lots of different tequilas and tequila drinks. I haven't eaten there, but the Mexican food menu looks good.

Came here after a game, not much of a crowd, but we were a group of ourselves! The tacos are "muy delocioso"... I don't speak Spanish! A friend of mine told us we should go there as we were passing... Great choice! We are having a great time!

Ran across this dive karaoke bar on our last night in Colorado. Good song selection, good sound system, and very fair karaoke rotation. Did not eat the food but the beers and well priced.

EXCELLENT for happy hour. $1 tacos and 2 for 1 drinks (and the regular drink prices are a steal). If I remember correctly, happy hour is Tuesday - Sunday (closed Monday) 4-7pm. And they will open for Monday night Rockies games. I tried all varieties of tacos and they were each very good: beef, pulled pork, chicken, and veggie (bean). I preferred the pork and the vegetarian. Great selections of creative tequilla cocktails. I tried El Diablo: reposado, creme de cassis, soda water (i might be missing an ingredient) and it was perfectly refreshing for a hot summer day, great balance of tequilla with enough to enjoy the flavor but not too strong. They also have a ample selection of beers, including gluten free options. Two of us had two cocktails, two beers and four tacos for a whopping $13!! Love this place!!! Be sure to tip bartender well to show how much you appreciate these awesome prices (rule is $1 per drink plus tipping on food - don't be "that guy" and think you are tipping well with 18% on $13, it's not Golden Corral). So glad I stumbled upon this place. El Charrito will be at the top of my list when I am downtown before Rockies games.

We've been going to El Charrito for about 4 years now and it is absolutely my favorite bar around! The staff is always the best, friendly and on top of things. The drinks are cheap and good and the atmosphere is always fun. It's not the typical downtown crowd, everyone is actually there to have fun. Close proximity to Coors field makes it the perfect spot for pre-gaming or post game celebrating (or not celebrating, depending on the Rockies) I'm not a singer and don't do karaoke but it's always a great time watching everyone else do it. When the weather is nice, the patio is fun to hang out on and people watch. I've never had any of the food but I've heard it's quite yummy and better than average for bar food so I'll have to give that a shot sometime.

I live a block from this gem and am a frequent customer! I frequent it for the predictably good times to be had there. Or because their $1 Jell-O shots get me doing karaoke. Either or. They have a BOGO drink deal and $1 Mexican bites most days during happy hour. I'll usually grab a margarita and quesadilla. Neither are fantastic tasting, but the price is right. Karaoke every Friday and Saturday is a hit. I've sang twice myself (Ace of Base- The Sign... Both times). They host comedian open mic nights on Thursdays- I've been once, and it was relatively entertaining. Regardless of the subpar food and drinks, they have a friendly bar staff and splendid karaoke! (Actually, their karaoke DJ of choice is kind of a dick, but I won't penalize El Chorrtio for it.)

This place is unique...in a cool funky sorta way. With a Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) vibe and cool hip bartenders (but not too hip to actually help you). Toni you are a fantastic bartender!! Thanks for taking the time to explain all the different drink combinations. Oh, did I mention they have all these crazy simple syrup combinations they put into all the drinks? Who knew lavender simple syrup was my favorite? The food is really good! We had the Nachos with all fresh veggie on top and Mexican Egg Rolls, they are just what they sound like. YUM! This place had the feel of a dive bar with the reality of a top shelf establishment. Totally worth a visit! Can't wait to go back!!

I have never felt more at home. I walked in and felt warmed immediately by the surroundings. It picked up shortly after I got here. But I anticipated that for a Friday. But this place is great. The perfect noise level. The perfect bartenders. I will definitely be coming back.

Personality people, this place has it! This place is a hoot! The layout is great, location is rad & the karaoke is fun too! The staff is always friendly and wacky and the vibe is very unique! I have been here during Oktoberfest, early on a Friday night and late on a Saturday night - each time it was busy but not crowded = perfecto! I chatted up some weirdos, had a few drinks, meowed a few songs and acted a fool. What more could a girl ask for? They also have nice bathrooms, a decent drink special and a fun mural outside. I will have to check it out on a weeknight fo sho. I dig it the most!

    (4)
  • Brian H.

We don't come here all the time, but the times that we do are always great! Love the karaoke and weeknights, they have PBR on special for $1!!!!! I'm serious! Bring friends and enjoy this family owned dive!

Great tacos. Cheap beer. Great location with lots of metered parking and inexpensive lots. I dropped in with a Groupon type things one evening and enjoyed some fish tacos, pork tacos with salsa verde and a brew. The service is really friendly. The people at the bar are friendly. The wall behind the liquor covered with Lucha Libre posters and an old mirrored headboard is hilar. The bathrooms with non-functioning locks is not hilar. But, this is just a really fun, divey bar with a limited happy hour style menu. I had a great experience there and will definitely be back.

I rolled into this place for the first time on Saturday night to attend not one, not two, but what turned out to be three birthday parties on the same night. I believe there were a couple of other birthday gatherings that were going on involving people I didn't know. It was, in a word, redonk. The line to get a basic drink was at least 20 minutes. Maybe 15 if you were aggressively pushy. Moving from the front to the back of the bar was nearly impossible and if you were any more than 10 feet from the stage, you couldn't actually hear any of the karaoke being sung (that may have been a blessing at times?). If I based my experience purely on this one visit, I would give this place a star, maaaaybe two, because it just wasn't very pleasant. However, I have it on good authority that it's not usually that full and fairly navigable on most nights, so I'll bump this place up to three stars because, had it not been for the ridiculous crowd, I think this place would have been a fairly standard karaoke dive bar. Definitely give it a shot if you want a fun night of karaoke, just maybe go during the week and avoid it on the weekends.

    (3)
  • Brenda L.

This narrow and long dive bar serves as a nice karaoke spot with a modest dance floor. I had a blast dancing to the karaokers' acts, half of whom were regulars or workers from that establishment. There's a minimum credit card charge of $4 so I had to order 2 grapefruit juices rather than 1. Two cups of grapefruit juice= $5=3 cans of juice.

    (3)
  • Kelsi H.

Checked this bar out last night with a group of friends during Oktoberfest. It definitely meets the criteria to be called a dive bar with questionable music choices (Queen, country and Spice Girls back to back, what??) and an even more questionable crowd. This place might be okay on a different night but last night was pretty awful. After only being there about 20 minutes or so, one of my guy friends got shoved and had a creepy man continuously try to fight him and one of my girlfriends had a disgusting man make crude gestures towards her. I'd rather spend a few more dollars on a drink and have a better crowd and experience than what we dealt with. We won't be going back. OH- and no draft beer. Come ON!!

At the risk of having people come here who don't deserve the awesomeness, I must post my unadulterated love of the food, drink, service and ambiance.

Hole in the wall, dirty, but damn it's great for people watching. We came here after drinking at 1up. Got lured in by the music pumping out of this place. It's huge. Tables, booths in the front and pool tables in a room in the back. You put your song and name on a piece of paper and give to the DJ who will eventually list your name on the screen when it's time for you to sing your embarrassing karaoke song. The stage is small but when you are drunk and ready to perform you don't care. They have props (blow up guitars) in the front for you to "sing" with while you point to the crowd. The crowd was weird...couples, single men that look like they love Star wars, and a random 60 year old were there for the night. Great place for a group of people celebrating and wanna get their singing on. Would I come back here if i was sober? Maybe not...would I come back here with a group of friends? Hell yes. Warning: they have last call at 1:30 so you are out of there by 1:50. Beware, their glasses break easily...I learned that the hard way.

I used to think that this was a pretty good dive bar. However, the last few times I've gone here on busy nights I paid for my drink with a $20 and the bartender gave me change for a $10 then immediately goes to the other end of the bar and stays away long enough that its beyond awkward trying to bring it up (they know that after 10 minutes most people will give up). It's happened three times that I've noticed and with different bartenders. Their actions are the exact same every time. Be extra wary if you are there with a girl. I live down the street, but I'll not be back and I tell everyone I meet in the neighborhood about this. They are crooks.

  • Daniela B.

Exactly what you expect from a dive bar.....eclectic mix of art decor and furniture, basic beer options, and a cool crowd. On weekends they do karaoke and sometimes open mic stand up.

  • Tiffany N.

I can see why they say this is 5 star dive bar - it's kind of dim and inexpensive like a dive bar should be, but it's a little cleaner than many true dives and I didn't see one older, drunker regular during the time I was in there. I did see some kick ass karaoke though so if you like doing a mic check one, two, one, two then this could be your spot. Also, other than the free taco/nacho bar from 4 - 6 they don't serve food. However, the people working there are more than happy to let you bring outside food in and with the close proximity to Biker Jim's, Buenos Aires (empanadas!) and Marco's among many other spots serving excellent eats to go you should have no trouble filling your tummy. And I don't know if I'm still suffering from sticker shock after living in San Francisco for so long, but the drinks here seemed crazy cheap!

I have lived in Denver for 5 years. I searched for a long time for a bar that I would want to become the bar where everybody knows my name. This is THE bar for that. The staff are some of the friendliest, most welcoming people I have ever met. Treat them with courtesy and respect and they will go above and beyond to make you happy! The food is awesome! Some of my favorites on the menu are the smothered beef burrito, vegetarian tacos and the newly added Mexican eggrolls. They have a great brunch too with bottomless mimosas and a bloody marry bar. The entertainment here is endless! They have a free pool table, 2 newly added pinball machines, board games ranging from childhood favorites to D&D, free live jazz on Wednesdays, free open mic comedy on Thursdays, Karaoke on Friday and Saturday and limitless people watching. The also have a great patio. I could go on and on about how much I love this place as well as the people who own it and work there. If you're looking for your home away from home kind of bar, check it out!

  • Sarah G.

Walked by a sign that said 5 dollar bottomless mimosas on a game day Sunday. That was enough to get me in the door! Food was ehhhh, everyone else's meal looked better than mine so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Music was chill, game was on, my friends and I were pretty much the only ones in there until about 5pm. Was I expecting to stay that long? No, but I was ok with it.

Mostly college students and local residents come here, all shapes and sizes, lower-than-average douche factor with the occasional diva, but for some reason there's always one wasted dude with a big mouth and a small ego. It's a long and narrow venue like a lot of other small bars in Denver, but has a good amount of seating, good sized seated smoking patio with drinks allowed, a little dance floor next to a raised stage, and the bar is nice and long which speeds up orders if they're properly staffed. On weekends they have karaoke. The host is really good with sound, and it's not so loud that you can't talk to your friends. The singers are usually pretty talented also. The list is always long so there are multiple screens with a marquee of the rotation. That seems to be their big draw on weekends though. I'm rating it accordingly: 3* People 4* Price 4* Music 3* Venue 4* Location 5* Staff

This three-star review is really just me sitting on the fence contemplating a fourth star. As far as the singing went, it was a friendly crowd that made it comfortable for people in our group to take the stage, and it is an extremely dive-y dive bar. Drinks were cheap, service was dive-level, and they do not serve wine. The crowd trended pretty young, looked like a lot of college kids in their early 20s. My usual dive experiences are with an older crowd, but like I said the vibe was friendly. In fact, guys, don't be quite so friendly with my fiancee please. One of the differences between dives for 20-year-old and dives for guys in their 40s is this: bathroom doors. Like I said about that place in Austin, I am tool old for the no-doors no-stalls thing. Just letting you know right now everyone.

  • Laura Lee M.

The El Charrito is exactly what it claims to be, a 5 Star Dive Bar. It has all the wonderful things about a dive bar but it's still classy. The drinks are cheap, the bartenders and owners treat the regulars like family without forgetting about the new guy. The food is taco truck Mexican in origin but the result is high quality tastiness. I usually go on Friday nights to watch karaoke but my husband and I opted to have our wedding after-party in the back room. Again, the owners were awesome, our guests had a blast and the food was fantastic. It's a dive bar so don't expect a bathroom attendant or anything fancy. It's just a great time.

This place is a great place tho go. Open Mic comedy night on Thursdays, Karaoke on Friday and Saturdays. The Dj , Dj Rytz has an enormous selection. Sundays are movie on the big screen and the list goes on. The manager Matt is a really cool guy and will strike up a conversation with you. Any way, you can't go wrong with this place.

Yelp ain't lying when they classify this as a dive bar. This establishment is for you if you like bad karaoke, slow service, a hit or miss crowd but cheap drinks! I certainly think there are countless other options within a few blocks for you to spend your hard-earned money on adult beverages. Stop in for a drink and I assume you'll quickly agree!

It is no wonder that this place makes and/or tops lists for Best Dive Bar in Denver. It gives you all the great local diviness without feeling like you have to shower when you leave. Since it's located in Lodo it tends to have more of a clientele that is young, but doesn't want to buy martinis then old guys drinking themselves to death. We found this place several years ago. Being pretty active with the Film Society, we regularly go to all the after parties throughout the Starz Denver Film Festival. The Late Night Lounge has been close by this place for the last few years, but there is always an hour lull between the Festival closing it's Film Maker's Lounge and the opening of the Late Night Lounge. We were trying to burn our hour, so we wandered into El Charrito and have been glad ever since. Being the middle of the week the only people there were the two owners, Matt and Esmerelda. We go in, quickly get our drinks, and start chatting with them. They have the WII on so I sit down with Esmerelda and play for a bit. We spent several nights like this over the two week of the Festival. Even though we live downtown/Golden Triangle we don't get to Lodo that often, but if we are up there we try to stop in and see them. Matt is super nice and always has something to say. I've had some interesting conversations with other patrons. They've opened their kitchen in the last few months so I need to eventually check the food out. If you are in Lodo and want to escape some of the cheesier bars down there, I would recommend heading into El Charrito.

No one has reviewed this place? Why? Mexican saloon type theme. Iron gates, mariachi pics, face masks, the works. Full bar. Great story of a family owned business continued on by the next generation. Not as divey as one would think. The owners/bartenders Esmeralda and Matt are extremely friendly. Give em a go. Hopefully the open hours will build up. Dafe

Karaoke here is fantastic! We showed up at about 9:30 on a Saturday night and the place was empty except for about 15 other people. By 11 it was slammed! I can understand why though. There were $3 wells, the place has a good vibe and a dance floor. It was so easy to sing here, it didn't feel judgmental at all, although they had some seriously entertaining singers. (There was one rocker chick who jumped on top the booths! I love her!) Also the song list is on computers, so you didn't have to search through the big heavy books that are usually missing the page you want. One criticism is that people rarely cheered at the end of performances. awesome vibe + cheap drinks + singing and a dance floor = El Charrito

Really fun dive bar! The nights they have karaoke are hilarious. Big dance floor to bust out moves to the bad singers.

This family owned self tittled "five star dive bar". We here after a Rockies' rain out (actually snow out) and they went out of their way to make us a grea from-scratch burrito But its the retro feel I love. Big comfy boothes, a moddy backroom pool parlor and the creepy papaer mahce' bull skull shine made one of the owners. Kereoke is huge here on Thursday. Just a fun chill locals haunt on the trendy party part of Larmier east. Also check out their comedy nights.

For what we were expecting, this was a really fun place. We went here for my bf's birthday party because we love karaoke and had yet to try this place out. It was a cool dive bar with a great crowd for singing. We got there at 7pm and the crowd was a little older (50's?) But the average age dropped once karaoke started. The wait list was pretty long but my boyfriend and I each got a couple songs in and some friends sang too. A couple of us ordered food but I wouldn't do it again. The enchiladas had like mozzarella cheese on the inside that was kind of hard and cold. No bueno. And at the beginning of the night there was a funky smell that lingered around and we caught a whiff of it every once in a while but eventually nobody noticed it. For a dive bar it was great. We had a lot of fun and will most certainly be back!

I... am a karaoke slut. (Look it up on urban dictionary) So naturally, I migrate over to El Charrito on Fridays and Saturdays. The place really gets going after 11 or so, but it's never TOO crowded, and you can always have a conversation with the person next to you which is a bonus. The crowd is rather eclectic, but everyone's always really friendly here. Oh, and they just started serving food, and it's pretty good! I had the burrito, and it really hit the spot... and helped to pad my stomach from all the whiskey I drank ;)

Nice bar to chill out in and have some cheap drinks. $2 PBR, $4 car bombs, & $5 margaritas. The margaritas can be pretty sweet, though, so if that's not your type of margarita, you should probably go with the car bomb/PBR. I really like going here for afternoon/day drinking, watching whatever game is on, and talking with friends. The owners (husband & wife I believe) are very nice people, talking with you and explaining different aspects of the bar. They have different games all over on several tables to play with groups of people as well. If you want some impromptu comedy you should talk with the husband; he is hilarious. They have a seemingly constant supply of peanuts & pretzels for you, as well as live music on the weekends. Last time I went they had a really good jazz band playing. If they had some outdoor seating I would never leave.

It's a dive, but remarkably clean for a dive. It's owned by the most adorable, sweet little couple who are just as friendly as can be. The fact that everything stopped at 6pm because it was "time for Jeopardy" made this Jeopardy fan pretty happy. The drinks are affordable, and the free taco/nacho bar is just a plus. Very cute, fun place!

The girls and I attended a party at El Charrito. Not a bad place, not particularly nice either. It's your typical mexican spot with wooden tables and bar, pool tables in the back and the big attraction,,,margaritas! I think this party was probably the busiest this place has ever been! The food looked pretty good. The couple I talked to said they had tacos and they were awesome! I didn't necessarily put too much into that though, considering the purpose of their meal was to actually sober them up! Margaritas strike again!! Honestly, when I have walked by this place it has never been open. My girlfriend said she thought it was a empty shop or something. But, if I find myself thirsty and in the area, I might stop in again.

After reading the great reviews on Yelp, I decided to check this place out with some friends. Upon walking in the place had a strange odor. I noticed that the clientele was a very diverse group with some of the strangest people I have seen in Denver. This was what made us not leave after one drink. The layout of the karaoke area is horrendous, the tall booths on the side of the floor and a dance floor in the middle make it feel like you are isolated up there singing. I feel that karaoke should be a group event, with everyone in the bar cheering you on. I have to say that the drinks were super cheap ($3) but the bartender didn't even know how to make an old fashioned! I know it is a dive bar but come on. A few suggestions: If you are looking for a great dive bar, go to Don's (6th and Washington) and if you are looking for a great karaoke bar, go to Armidas (9th and Lincoln). We went to Armidas after and had a great time, everyone was right in your face cheering you on when you are singing and the drinks weren't too expensive either. Take my word for it and skip this place at all costs.

There is nothing not to love about this family owned bar. Taco bar on Friday's, open mic comedy on Thursday and kereoke (sp?) on other nights. The place is friendly and comfortable and reasonably priced. I am a fan.
