Good food, great atmosphere, green chili is the hottest in town, a Denver classic.

I have been repeat customer for years because of the awesome hot green chili, but the bartenders and wait staff at this location is less desired. Most of them are old, burned out and just don't care about customer service. Even though I live closer to the downtown location, I drive to Park meadows.

I get a kick out of some of the reviews here for the BBII complaining about the food, service, etc. First off, this is a BAR! A real bar not a Chili's, or CB Potts, etc. It's not a brew pub, it got its name from BBI which was located in the Tivoli brewery way back when, BBI is long gone, hence the name Brewery Bar II! So then, I have been eating here off and on for 30 years, mostly for lunch. I come here for the green chili mostly, going half and half is a total cop out, if you can't stand the heat go eleswhere. The rellenos are good also, as are the enchiladas. The house margs are very good (no Jose' C. crap), the chips are not what you come here for and yes they are not to write home about. I will continue to put up with the funkiness of the place, poor parking, too fast service (which I appreciate when I'm in a hurry). The staff are real people, some have been there a very long time! If you want plastic, groovy people go elsewhere! In this day and age of constant change, too many damn laws and rules, places to be seen, it's nice to walk into a comfortable place and feel like it's a much simpler time. Oh yes, Tivoli beer is being brewed again! "I'll have the usual Stephanie, beef and bean special, hot and a marg!"

I get the same thing every time, Crispy Chili Rellenos with half hot and half mild Pork Green Chili. I can't speak for much else on the menu but the Rellenos have never disappointed. The Brewery Bar is a bar so remember that before you head over expecting to have a fancy dinner. I love hitting this place for a quick lunch. 90% of the time I'm seated and have my food in 5-10 minutes.

Yuck! The green chili is WAY over-rated. The food is very cheap....not inexpensive but just plain crap. Some poeple really like the green chili though, I don't get it???? So, I am not a snob to a dive bar but if I am going to a dive, there had better be something amazing about it, like the food or some awesome happy hour specials or a good crowd..this place has none of those. Don't waste your money unless maybe you think a $.99 banquet frozen dinner is a decent meal.

It's instances like this where I wish I could give half stars. While I don't think this place did enough to get 3 stars, I don't think it was egregious enough to only get 2. But alas, no half stars to give, so I have to round down to two. We stopped in here on a Sunday for lunch. We originally had plans on going to Breckenridge Brewery, but since they weren't open and this place was nearby we took a chance. I'm not sure why this place is called Brewery Bar, the only beers they had on tap were the standard domestics save for the lone micro, a red ale from Breckenridge. The name is definitely a misnomer as the beer selection leaves some to be desired, not to mention that it is a Mexican restaurant. The vibe in here is pretty easy going, however. Very laid back, very casual. You get the sense that this is a place where everybody knows your name... and they're always glad you came. On to the food. Ordered the smothered beef burrito with half and half pork green chili. The chili had an interesting appearance, for being "green" chili, it looked more like marinara sauce. It did taste like chili, however. I would say it's very similar to what they serve at Santiago's, although maybe not as good. The pork was a little over cooked, same could be said for the beef in the burrito. It was pretty dry, almost cardboard dry, but I still finished my plate and left full. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go here again, but it worked for us given the situation we were in.

This place is just awful!! Tried it for the first and last time this week. We ordered chips and salsa with cheese. Now, at most other Mexican restaurants, this would mean cheese melted on the chips and salsa on the side or on the chips. Instead, what you get is a small bowl of warmed up cheese whiz and a small bowl of salsa (definitely not house made). The chips are, I KID YOU NOT!, TOSTITO's tortilla chips straight from the bag. The round salty ones. Ordered the cheese quesadilla and it was barrrrrrely warmed up the cheese wasn't even warm or completely melted. The guac was an odd light green color too and did not taste fresh. The other meals at the table were just floating in sauces. Truly the worst Mexican food I have other tested, what a shame!!! The service was already very poor. One guest had to return an item at the table because it was dirty and the waitress acted completely put out and irritated by it. While there silverware was dropped on the floor as well and put back in the silverware basket---uncleaned!!! Dirty dirty dirty!

While this place isn't as good as it used to be, it's still one of my favorite Mexican joints in town. Special Chili Relleno is all you need to know. The first time I ate at Brewery Bar I was probably 14, I am now 28 and still eat here regularly between the downtown and the Parker and Arapahoe Brewery Bar III when I am in town.

No veggie friendly food really. All the sauces and beans have meat in them. But they do have strong margs and desent gauc. Totally more of a bar than restaurant, which makes the mix of people eclectic and fun. Way better for some bloddy marys on Sunday, rather than a Monday dinner with family. Prices are reasonable and the service was decent too.

I have been eating here since I moved to Denver nearly 40 years ago! I personally think it is the best chili relleno ever. With the hot green chili, and a cold beer, it always leaves you with a warm after glow. I know hot food is not for everyone, but, for me, this is one of the best foods in the world! Bob always has a warm greeting and wait staff is what you expect in a small bar that's been around forever. Over the years it has changed--they now have computers!--and they now accept credit cards!--and they are open on Saturday nights!! None of which was true when Abe owned the place. But the food is still just wonderful. I'll bet I have eaten there, literally hundreds of times, and still just love going there. I like Brewery Bar III as well, but it is modern, suburban and has an expanded menus. I still prefer the old, been there forever atmosphere. And if you ever lived in a small town in Pennsylvania, where some bars went unchanged for 50 years, then you'll understand Brewery Bar II. With the world of franchise restaurants seemingly taking over, this is a refreshing place. I always order the same Chili Relleno Special. Never gets old.

Best green chili I have ever eaten. Margs are solid.

Food: Eh! Nothing to "write home" about. Service: Was fun, cool & quick! Margaritas (top shelf): Ok, a little on the pricey side. Atmosphere: Eh! Overall, probably won't be going back anytime soon unless the housemate wants/needs to go, it's one of his favorite spots, but other than that VERY uneventful.

The only meal I have ever enjoyed here is the fried chili relleno. Other than that, you get stale chips, bad salsa, and a dumpy atmosphere. The drink specials are definetly not special. The last time I went here, the waitress was too busy talking with her buddies at the bar (she was sitting at the bar) to help us. We almost walked out.

  • Kim H.

Some of the best rellenos and green chili in Denver! The hot chili is really hot, so if you want medium heat go with the half & half. That said, the last time we were at the Kalamath location, the food was just meh, the green chili seemed watery and the service was horrible. It was after a Bronco game, but they weren't that busy (only a couple of other tables). It took forever to get drinks and water refills were non-existant. From now on, we will probably stick with the Lone Tree location which as consistently great food and excellent service!

Great food in a strange location. The original Brewery Bar is closed, so this is now the original. Great, fast burritos and rellenos with the best green chile in town. Hard to get to and the parking lot is a nightmare, but once youre in it dosent get more interesting and personality packed than this place.

My fiance and I ate dinner here last night. We hadn't been a long while, but I'm happy to report that nothing has changed. I'm not a huge salsa fan but I did like the salsa here. The chips are Tositos-like, not your typical chips at a Mexican restaurant. I had combination five smothered with the red chili sauce. The sauce was mild, which is good because I'm not a huge spice fan. There is a lot of meat in the red chili, so don't select that option if you don't want your entire plate covered in red, meaty chili. I preferred the taco to the enchilada and burrito, partially because it wasn't smothered. My fiance had the taco combination (can't remember the number) and the mild green chili. He said even the mild was spicy, which he enjoyed. Oh, and Monday's are happy hour all day - $3.50 margs, $2 beers, etc. The margaritas were heavy on the sour but still tasty. If you're looking for quick service and an inexpensive Mexican meal, then head to Brewery Bar II.

Not sure what is up with the bad reviews? Maybe they all prefer the fake New Mexican food you can get at some of the other places in town or this neighborhood. Green Chile should be watery. Try and make some for yourself and see how it turns out. Thick green chile has flour, cornstarch, or some other crap added to it to get it that way. The chile has big chunks of pork in it. Very good and very hot. Everything I have ordered off the menu has been good. I will agree the chips and salsa leave a little to be desired but it's not the chips and salsa you go there for. I go here a few times a month for lunch. I have never had a service issue. The staff always remembers me and brings me my drink as they greet me at my table. Everyone I take there that likes New Mexican style Mexican food loves it. I recommend trying it if you aren't stuck on the Taco Bell or Chipotle style of Mexican food.

This was not the best place to choose last night for dinner for many reasons. Both my boyfriend and I decided to go here last night for dinner since we were technically in the area and I was hungry for mexican. I suggested Brewery Bar and this was the closest one to us. I now wish we would have gone someplace else for mexican. This review is based on both of us getting the combo number 2. Him the chicken and bean burrito, beef taco, and tostada. Me the beef and bean burritor, beef taco, and bean tostada. The bad part- The food: 1) Way too hot for my boyfriend. He could not really taste the mild in the green chili. He ordered the green half hot/hot mild. 2) His beer and my iced tea came after the food was delivered. 3) Both of our tostadas were soggy. Mine at least somewhat crunchy. 4) The beef tacos were swimming in grease, hence the reason why the tostadas were soggy. The atmosphere: 1) Dark, low lightning, and definitely had the bar like feeling. 2) The tables seemed cramped and put too close together. The waitress: 1) She seemed to semi rush us when we first sat down. She took our drink order, never got it until after the food arrived. The good part- Food: 1) Really good. The temperature was perfect. The atmosphere: 1) Casual, not for big groups though. The waitress: 1) Friendly.

I haven't been here in about a year, used to be a regular... I now remember why I haven't been here.. servers are RUDE as hell, bathroom is moldy and stinks, my order was wrong and food is no longer good.. such a disapointment! The Lunstroms need to focus on this place a lot more if it is to continue being a Denver institution. Sad.

I came here to meet some friends before a show last night. When I hear the words "brewery" and "green chili" I'm gonna come a-runnin. The name is somewhat misleading, as it is not a brewery, but that didn't stop me. I was greeted politely by a man who had the air and appearance of a manager, and took note of a sign that said to "please seat yourself". I did so, but as soon as I sat down and ordered a drink, a party of 6 came in. There was an entire empty dining room with plenty of places for them to be seated, but two servers came up to my four top and asked me to move so they could slide my table together with another to accommodate them, when there was clearly 5 other spots that they could have done the same thing without treating one customer who was waiting for other guests to arrive as if he was less important. (Immediate thought in my mind - "half a star".) And the best part is, when I moved, she actually said " Oh, don't be disappointed". You have got to be kidding me! I cannot believe this happened! When my friends arrived she took their drink order, Then she proceeded to ignore us. In the interim 4 more tables came in, and she got them taken care of, orders placed and served, before she finally acknowledged us flagging her - to which she responded "Yeah, I know. I'm coming." Horrible service from the very beginning to the very end. Originally I ordered a house margarita, and that was nothing special. The chips and salsa were mediocre but it did have more heat than I anticipated which I liked. I ordered the Best of Denver plate, a chili relleno and a beef burrito with hot green chili. I did enjoy the chili, medium heat with very tender chunks of pork. The relleno itself wasn't bad at all, but not the best in town, as it boasts. The burrito was nothing special, made better by the green chili. The service from the beginning truly embittered me. I always enjoy Mexican food, but there are many places to go for higher quality and not be treated like something left over on the plate. My friends enjoy this place, so I may end up coming back with them at their request, but I will avoid being served by the same person.

Not a brewery. Barely a bar. It's a Mexican restaurant run by white people. They have good deals during happy hour, but so do many much better restaurants. The chips were white corn chips they probably got from Sam's Club. The nacho cheese must have come from a grade school cafeteria. I tried several other entrees but they were all pretty terrible. The beer selection includes one or two craft beers and several kinds of cheap crap (Coors, Miller, Bud). If you like getting drunk cheap, and before their 7:30pm closing time, this is the place for you. Better beer and food can be had at Breckenridge a few blocks north or The Rackhouse a few blocks south.

Every single thing that one star reviewers have said is TRUE! Denver is cursed with some pretty below mediocre Mexican food and this place has been an offender for years. The first time I went I couldn't believe how awful it was, the people I was with raved about it so I tried not to be rude. Even before I ordered I was grossed out, the decor, servers and menu don't help. The second time I went I just had a drink and tried not to puke in my mouth. I don't even think Chef Ramsey could bring this relic back to life. My advice is to stay away, unless you need a good cleanse.

The Brewery Bar II and I have a history. My dad turned me on to the Brewery Bar. He and his work buddies would visit anytime they had the chance. A tiny tea and one of the combination plates, smothered in green chile, is the order. I don't know if the tiny tea is available anymore as I have graduated to a beer with the meal... The food comes out fast, hot and tasty. We've seen beans being sorted on the table and heard the banter between the regulars and the staff. When I am back in Denver, the Brewery Bar II is the first choice for a Mexican food / dive bar fix! Just writing the review is making me want to book a flight!

Went with some friends for dinner. I have eaten there before and I am not impressed. This last experience was disgusting. I ordered the Mexican Hamburger plate smothered with green chile. I should've known better when I told the waitress to cook the burger medium-rare and she said I can only get it medium. I received my meal and of course the chile is soupy therefore making the tortilla soggy. As I was eating my meal, I noticed a weird taste. I dissected the burger from everything, took a bite and then asked my friend of the burger tasted weird. Old, frozen bad meat. Sour tasting. The waitress came by and I told her about the meal and she offered a replacement meal, but I declined. I will never go back. As for the best Mexican food in Denver, oh hell no!! There are other better Mexican restaurants. Beware....

I have been going to Brewery Bar II for 30 plus years, more often in the 80s when I actually lived in Denver. Still make it to BB II on most of my visits to Denver. Atmosphere, decor and denizens virtually unchanged through the decades. At this point I always get the same thing -- special chile rilleno smothered in hot green pork chili. As noted by other Yelpers, you either like this dish or you don't, no middle of the road. It's the best food there is as far as I'm concerned.

  • Rick C.

This is my second visit to The Brewery Bar II and both times the food and service were top notch. They bill themselves as a Mexican Restaurant and have a full menu, but the best item by far is the chili relleno smothered with hot green chili. The "Best of Denver" special adds a burrito with the relleno. The guacamole and salsa are excellent as well. Don't let the location discourage you. By the railroad on the short south side of Denver. Not the best neighborhood, but the place is a real gem. Well worth the trip.

Brewery Bar will do just fine without a Yelp review, it has paid its dues and made a name for itself long before us e-critics, but it deserves a good review now and then and I'm happy to write one after finally making my way here. I've been in Baker for two years now and only noticed this place while on light rail. Something about its location to a walker like myself, it seems out of the way from the concentrated areas of Santa Fe Arts District and Baker's central vein, Broadway. Now I realize that is an advantage! It allows for it to retain its characteristics within the changing neighborhood, a beacon Denver's hardened culture, an independent state of mind, and taste buds. On our way back from a memorial event downtown we decided to stop in for a little substance, barely making an order in time before the kitchen closed (8:30pm on most weeknights!). It has a great tequila selection that the co-owner Bob decided to share near last call (yes, everyone got a free shot, perhaps that makes my review bias, you've been warned.) Had the special for the day, smothered tamales, and a house margarita. The hot chili is spot on, definitely spicy, without sacrificing flavor. That's what I call Mexican Magic. The atmosphere is blue collar meets neon, almost an 80s feel, not as swanky blue collar as say, Gary Lee's Motorclub, but just as comfortable and more homey. You can tell it is a family ran business, classical friendly service. It's definitely a Denver atmosphere, retaining a sense of community that was this place for as many decades as it has been around. It is also still remarkably affordable (a rarity these days in going out!), and downright delicious.

We went on the suggestion of a dive bar book, my boyfriend picked up. It was a community drinking hole for sure, everyone knew each other. We are new to the neighborhood, so no one knows up yet. A ladies daughter was drinking at the other end of the bar, and she exclaimed "Oh no!". Other poepl at the counter were jibing an old fella eating the chile bowl, "Do you need to use the bathroom." I enjoyed the banter, and the bartender was a cool seasoned professional. We were their before five, so maybe we left before the choice debauchery. We got a happy hour, chips and cheese and salsa app, which was nothing special. Bartender said you should try the green chile. Happy hour does not include micro brews. But you are in luck for cheap domestic draft beers- Coors, Bud etc. Our main crit, is turn the lighting down, ti is way too bright for a dive bar.

How can you not give a place a shot that is frequently billed as the best green chili in the city? That's no small claim for Denver. I was a bit skeptical from the get go (as I sure most first timers are) as the location made me feel like i should be packing heat on the way in for my own safety. Very divey location, and sure enough, very divey inside too. I got the a chili relleno and cheese enchilada plate (all covered in green chili of course). It was tasty, but certainly not the best in Denver. Even at the "hottest" spice level, it didn't really pack much of a punch, and wasn't very hearty as i would hope the "best in Denver" would be. The plate was also so liquidy that I would have borderline called it a soup. Total gut bomb, but usually when I come to a place like this, I've left my calorie tracker at home, so i didn't really mind. Would have definitely been a solid 3-star "A-OK" place for me, except our waitress was rushing us to finish because she was at the end of her shift and wanted her tip before she left. :/ Overall: - Quality artery clogging cheesy/greasy Ameri-Mexican food + good/affordable margs. - NOT the best green chili in the city. - Meh service.

First incorrect assumption you will make of this place: It's a brewery. It is not. Second incorrect assumption you will make of this place: There is a Brewery Bar I There is not. There is, however, a III and IV. Third incorrect assumption you will make of this place: Their Mexican fare will be lame bar food. It is not. It is melt your face spicy hot. That being said, I wasn't absolutely gaga over this place. It was good food in gigantor proportions. The server was friendly and everything went pretty smoothly. But it's not something that stuck with me. If someone asked me to go here again, I would without complaint, but I wouldn't suggest it as a destination.

Love this place the way you love a favorite old bronco sweatshirt. My favorite Mexican food in this town and I've been to most. I get the #1 (smothered burrito & relleno) most times and love it. This place won't win any beauty pageants but if you want good sloppy green chile smothered food that comes out quick, Brewery Bar II will make your day.

Worst Mexican Food EVER!! I arrived about 1:30pm. I was told to sit at a 2 top right by the door. It was cold yesterday, so I moved over to an open booth. The waitress came and said where did HE tell you to sit? I said over by that door. She then says HE doesn't like it when people move. She then said it would be OK if I was quick about it. I didn't even get to look at the menu as she was like, just tell me what you want! I said an enchilada plate smothered in green chili. She said I will bring you 1 enchilada and you can be quick about it. I said can I get chips/small guacamole? The Food: The whole plate tasted like a Mexican T.V. Dinner.....the Green Chili was so thin and no flavor, even though I ordered Hot. Food was cold, my cheese was not even melted. But the WORST was when I dug into my guacamole......I got a big hunk of peel with the produce label still stuck on it. Being as I don't eat avocado peel or produce stickers I called her over. She said oh my and ran off. I did get the guac taken off my bill. Overall I will never recommend or return to this place. I was given a coupon for my next visit for $6 off a meal over $ 25.NO THANKS! So if you want watered down chili, less food than you order and ask to "be quick about it" Eat produce stickers then this may be the place for you.....I will NEVER be back. I paid $16 dollars for a Patio T.V. Dinner!! Yuck!!!

Long ago, this was one of the Holy Grail Mexican food stops in Denver. Now, not so much. While I still appreciate their chili rellenos, there is something amiss at the old Brewery Bar II. Granted we went a little late for lunch so the good news was we missed the rush. The bad news was getting a server to act like they cared was like trying to find a parking space on the street during Taste of Colorado. Ten minutes, not even a hello. Then, after ordering (and before food was served) our server informed us that she would need payment as her shift was ending. She then gestured vaguely away and said "so and so will take care of you." Well, we never saw "so and so" at all. Another bonus was that we simply helped ourselves to drink refills. But enough about the crappy service, on to the food. I had a combination plate which included a smothered burrito. When the green is actually watery, that is not a good sign. The spicy heat was also unoriginal and gave off a dried spices from a spice rack kind of taste. Yeah, it's hot, it just doesn't taste good. The taco meat had a mild dish rag taste and again - soupy is not the consistency I'm looking for in a taco. The cheese enchilada was probably the best thing I had, and that's saying something. Cheese and onions rolled in a corn tortilla, bake it, then add a sauce? I can do this at home for way less money and I don't have to deal with any attitude from the other items in the combo. In short, The Brewery Bar II needs to watch the quality control and manage the servers a bit better - if you cut someone, cut them and don't let that server take another table. To me asking for payment "because my shift is over" is unacceptable in any culinary environment. Hospitality, people - look it up.

OK - after many, many years of trying Brewery Bar II - I'm done. Today was just lame and soooo expensive for what I got. First, their top shelf, but admittedly quite good margaritas, are 8.25 for a small, really? So,16.50 for two margs. Chips (Tositos) and Salsa (Pace or Pace's kin) are 2.00. The #6 combo (chile relleno, cheese enchilada, beans) is 10.75. I know the green chile is supposed to be the shizzz, but the truth is that it is really watery and if you order it on a combo plate the whole plate is awash in green chile jus. Everything was totally sopped out mush. I couldn't tell what was the relIeno and what was the enchilada. I didn't finish half this mess. Oh, by the way, unless you stall the waitress, your meal will be on the table before you put the menu down. Too fast, is just too fast and rude if you're trying to enjoy a drink and some chips. Let's face it the place is a dump and the wait staff is pretty well worn. I just can't justify $30 + tax and tip for lunch. Shoot me if I ever suggest going there again.

Five Star ONLY for the Chile Relleno....It is the best Relleno in the USA.... Green Chile is OK.....Hot, but not that great...They have had 70 years to get it together... Who cares?

Think most of the reviews of this place are spot on from 1 star to 5. The place is a dump, the service can suck horribly, ambience = ZERO, Green Chili is AWESOME, the food in general is very good. For me, I'm here to eat so not sweating the other stuff - Food wins! 4 Stars

Not that good any more. The food has gone down the hill, small portions for the money and the pork green chili has lost it's luster and taste. The service is not good at all. I am really bummed , I use to love the Brewery bar II . Not anymore .

If you have never been here PLEASE listen to all the negative reviews. Everything they say is true! That's why none of you should ever come here (the fact that you take up seats that we regulars are used to sitting in has no influence on this review). Oops did I give BBII five stars? Meant to give it none. So stay away. The best green chili in Denver is AWEFUL! It's "watery" or "thin" (meaning it has no artificial thickeners) and the wonderful "dive" atmosphere is just disgusting. I would NEVER bring a friend who appreciates the amazng cuisine of Chipotles here. Nuff said. JUST. SAY. NO!

So we just moved here from Arizona a few months ago and were craving some good mexican food. Being new to town we rely on yelp to at least steer us the right direction and so far it hasn't failed us. Thanks Yelp! After a long day of skiing and a rather lengthy discussion we decided on this place as everyone seems to like it. I had high hopes as the reviews are great but seriously I just don't get it. I don't even know where to start. First, I swear they serve Tostitos Chips and Pace Picante as their "chips and salsa". Now I'm not knocking Tostitos or Pace but I just don't think it should be served at a mexican restaurant. The guacamole was more white than green, the green chile had no flavor and the chile rellenos tasted like a deflated balloon. I really don't understand why this place gets good reviews. The service was decent but the food is terrible. If I could give it a half star I would. After a long day, and really being in the mood for some killer mexican food this place made me want to cry! Since eating here I have discovered anther place "taqueria patzcuaro" which has renewed my faith in Denver.

Filthy. OK, that said, I'll also say that the food is pretty good (certainly not outstanding), and it was packed tonight (Friday) at 7:30, so maybe no one cares how dirty it is. But I do. Bathrooms a mess. Trash barrel unemptied and spilling over in plain sight of all patrons. The floor covered in chip detritus, dropped dirty dishes, discarded table checks, spilled salsa, everything. It smelled, and I don't mean in a good way. But it's been a success for 35 years, I guess. Can't someone just sweep up a little? Really unpleasant--we won't be back. And hey! Turn down those 1000-watt light bulbs! The place is as bright as an operating theater! If you're going to leave the place so dirty, at least don't make the dirt so obvious.

LOVE this place. Parking kinda sucks, but the food is great and served quickly. the chile rellenos are amazing. I have been going here for years and it is incredibly consistent. Margaritas are pretty darn tasty too.

4 Stars

Terrible service! Waitress brought out drinks and queso and then we didn't see her again for 15 minutes, and it's not as though the place was busy. Won't be going back!

Nuff said. JUST. SAY. NO!

  • Pat C.

BB2 is a no frills, good Mexican restaurant with great green chile. What the Cherry Cricket is to burgers in Denver, I'd say BB2 is to the burrito, enchilada, rellenos. I usually get the #1 or #7. Worth checking out!

This place is best experienced if conceptualized as take out. Just belly up to the bar, order your food and a beer. Your order will be sitting in front of you about 2/3 of the way through your beer. Then go home and eat it in front of The Simpson's and enjoy that instead of drenching your meat in green chile, they put it in a carton (twice the yield) and you will have some leftover for eggs tomorrow morning.

  • Trevor W.

The service isn't the kindest, but it's definitely the quickest. And even though your server may be blunt and skip all niceties, the food more than makes up for it. This IS the best green chili and the best chile rellenos you will find in Denver. Hands down. Me and my family are and always will be loyal to this delicious restaurant.

Does every restaurant have to be new, trendy or authentic to be great...NO. I've been eating at the BBII for over twenty years and I can tell you that there are ony a few things I dislike - the too small bathrooms and too few parking spaces. Other than that, I loved this place the first time I went and I still love it today. That being said, I must admit that I only eat the fantastic chili rellanos (smothered with either all green or a combo of green and red chili). For me, one is enough but you should eat it with a "tiny" beer. The green chili is hot, but not as hot as it was years ago when it was sear the top of your head off hot. The red is mild but flavorful which is why I like to order half-n-half. The rellano is plump, crispy, full of cheese and green chilies and covered in what ever combination of sauce you desire. If you're a Yelp-snob you won't like nor appreciate a place that is, after many-many years, still a whole-in-the-wall and closes early and serves good tex-mex. There is no late night party crowd but the food is consistently good. The staff is friendly. Oh, and the "tiny" beers are huge!

  • Kevin W.

I won't be going here any more. The green chili sauce is pretty good and the supposedly famous relleno is mediocre at best - the "deluxe" appears to have Velveeta or some kind of cheap, rubbery block cheese on top. The red chili seemed like it comes straight from a Campbell's Chunky can. The chips and salsa actually made me feel sad. The chips were obviously the same thing as Tostitos, straight from a jumbo bag - cold and tasting of soybean oil. The salsa was also Tostitos, or something equally generic, from a large jar, refrigerator cold. It reminded me of camping when I was a kid, and digging Tostitos and convenience-store salsa out the small refrigerator in the camper. The prices are fairly high for what is essentially okay truck stop fare. Sorry, but this is the worst Mexican restaurant I have tried in Denver, including a lame Qdoba that was stingy with ingredients. If the prices were half or less, I might recommend the place to vagabonds or low-budget backpackers.

Brewery Bar II.... but they don't brew beer here. Strange name, and yes, I also wonder where Brewery Bar I is...does anybody know? This bothers me and every time I say the name, I have to laugh. That said, it's a pretty cool dive, with really good green chili. I am wimp when it comes to hot food, and it was a bit hot for me, but had a great flavor. My first and so far only experience was very good. Based on the comments on Yelp, I avoided the banyo, which could change my opinion, if I ever need to use it.

The only reason I rate this place so well is because of its famous green chili. I have been coming here with my father, uncle, co-workers, and friends for over twenty years-I still sometimes refer to it by its original name-ABE's even though it got bought out by a chain. Well, unfortunately, old Abe is gone but he left his famous green chili recipe. Other than that, not much has changed over the years-it seems the servers are still the same, the decor is the same, & the chili is still atomically hot on some days. In fact it can be down right dangerous to a weak system and is a total system purge when the batch comes out super-hot. (this can vary on a daily basis.) Come here for the Denver dive bar ambiance but don't expect fast service-the people who work here are fond of their "this isn't Taco Bell" attitude. In fact it is often best to run to the bar yourself and grab a pitcher of water before the glacially slow waitperson makes it your way. Order a "tiny" glass of beer, get that pitcher of water and order your Relleno with the hot green chili-it will test what your made out of. Though rest of the menu is C+ Denver Tex Mex-it's worth checking out-it's a classic west side hole in the wall. It's much easier to see and breathe now that the smokers have been vanquished to the sidewalk!

My family has been eating at the Brewery Bar for over 30 years. I grew up hearing my father rave about their green chile and it's become a staple in my visit every time I'm in town. I will admit that I haven't veered away from the relleno with the green chile- I'm not sure why I would. It's absolutely delicious, inexpensive and totally filling. This is not the place to go if you're looking for prestine conditions and servers that are going to kiss your butt to get a good tip. This is where you go when you want to enjoy a nice beer and a REALLY good relleno. I've never left feeling anything but fully satisfied.

Disgusting food and bingo looking hall type restaurant. I think the food here was just gross and the chips and salsa??? If you can call it salsa. It's like opening a can (not jar) of tomato sauce and pouring it in a bowl and serving it with round Tostito's chips. I ordered the enchiladas. One was supposed to have chicken, one beef and it appears the other was just cheese. The beef (ground beef) one was "ok", but I didn't taste any chicken in either of the other two and the melted cheese on top was just disgusting. I had to take that off just to try and eat the enchiladas. Can't remember what my bf ordered, but he really likes mexican food and he had a hard time finishing his because it really wasn't that great. We also ordered two Margaritas, which were equally unsatisfying. The bill at the end for two Margaritas, my enchiladas and whatever he ate came to $40!!! Not worth it coming from this dive! I mean really, the place doesn't even look like it gets cleaned. I wanted to walk out the minute I waslked in, but my bf said the guys at work thought this place was fantastic. Um...to each their own! I'll never return. Yuck!

This is where I go for my burrito smothered w/ green chile fix. Hey, I know there's lots of good mexican food joints in this town but this joint has been handling my green chile fix for soooo many years. I can't give it more than 3 stars since I've never ordered anything but a burrito smothered w/ green chile and I have no idea how good or bad their other food is.

I Love this place! Been eating here for near 15 years - Chili Relleno Smothered Green with a side of soured cream. Bang! Still a favourite - although the last time I was there about a month ago - the place stunk of urine!!! Not sure if there was a problem in the bathrooms or what, but it was FOUL! Kinda put me off my relleno - but will try again soon.

This little dive has awesome Mexican food and great green chile. They have another location down by Park Meadows that is a little more mainstream of a location but both places have good food. If you find yourself to be a bit of a green chili snob, go see how this place compares. Of the Colorado natives I know, this seems to be one of their favorite spots.

I have been trying to think of something positive about this restaurant, but nothing comes to mind. I suppose the best thing I can say is that their green chilli is OK but I prefer Santiago's. The rest of their menu is generic, not very interesting and not that cheap. If you have a hankering for good/cheap Mexican food, have a look on Yelp as there are plenty of good ones in town.

I went once and will be back. The green chile was right on for me and the food pretty decent. Not so happy they smothered everything including the tostada with green chile. Margs were decent too and our group didn't experience any problems with service. Food came out quick enough. I'd rate Benny's higher here but this place has better "Mexican" food than Las Margaritas. The salsa they serve with the chips is kind of nasty tasting.

Brewery Bar is the place I go to when I need to be closer to a heart attack or need to open up my sinuses due to a cold! Thankfully, I also go to enjoy the hot and spicy green chili! I had never heard of this place until 3 years ago when my boyfriend opened up my horizons to the love of green chili! When I first walked in I was a little nervous because it is a DIVE by all definitions! But the food, service (super fast) and the beer/mini margaritas. They don't have the best beer on tap but it comes in very large glasses so sometimes you have to take quantity over quality. They do have a mini margarita that is very good...nice a strong! There chips and salsa I crave but I know they are totally ghetto. The waitstaff is good almost 90% of the time...they are lifers because it's always the same crew whenever I go...but the best part of all is the green chili. There chili rellenos are to die for, they have the super crispy egg roll wrapper that is loaded with chili and cheese that just oozes out as you cut into it. I always get the HOT green chili smothering the relleno that has the most decadent pork medallions and the nice spice that just awakens all your senses! I have had there burritos, tostados and there tacos but the chili relleno will always hold a special place in my heart...! There green chili is sometimes super spicy and other times milder so it is a hit or miss but over all it is good every time! They are closed SUNDAYS so make sure to get your craving taken care of before then. They do have other locations that are much fancier and do have few different menu options. Overall it is always worth the trip!!

I went to Brewery Bar II on Santa Fe for lunch a couple of weeks ago after hearing people at work rave about the green chili. The place is pretty small and unassuming - nothing fancy to be sure - but like a lot of small Mexican food places it had the minimum amount of decor to remind you what type of food they're serving. On to the meal. My eyebrows definitely went up when the 'chips and salsa' arrived at the table. No hiding the truth here: these were Tostitos and Pace Pecante Salsa. Huh? I wasn't picking up the tab so I don't know if we actually had to pay for them but that is pretty low rent. Next up I ordered a Mexican hamburger with the hot green chili. The green chili was good, a bit above the norm even and I would think a simple order of chili and tortillas would be fine. But the Mexican Hamburger? Again, huh? This was supposedly a 1/4 pound of meat but when I peeled back the soggy tortilla all I saw were two pre-made hamburger patties that maybe clocked in around 1/8 of a pound combined. Pre-made hamburger patties...you know, like the kind you buy frozen in bulk at Sam's club that may or may not be 80% soy product. They didn't even bother with any type of seasoning. I can only guess that they figured they could smother any sub-par dish with their chili and it would be golden. They would be wrong. To be fair, I wasn't drinking and maybe the whole mess is a lot better after 6 beers or 3 margaritas. Someone also told me that their chili rellenos are what you should order. After this visit I can say is that the chili was good and the meal was fairly cheap. If my liquid courage is up (and it'll have to be) I may have the gumption to return and if I do, I'll update the review for good or ill. Maybe they have great drink specials? I'm lost on the allure...

Service is fast & very attentive. As many others have said, the chili rellenos here are amazing. Don't bother ordering anything else on the menu. The green chili is great, but be warned that it is spicy. Very spicy. I've been going here for a few years and am never disappointed.

I have been eating at the Brew Bar since 1980. I always order the "crispy chile relleno with [hot] green". No red or Christmas or mild for me. One plate of this and two Tiny beers and I am a happy boy. The best part about the Brew Bar is that nothing (other than the disappearance of tobacco smoke) has changed in 28 years. Many years ago I went there for lunch with a large group and then stayed through the afternoon talking with a co-worker and watching the ladies sort the beans. Dinner was especially enjoyable that night. Two meals in a row at the Brew Bar. I want to emphasize that my review is about the Brewery Bar II on South Kalamath. I would never even consider eating at the other BBs.

Not as good as it once was but still very hot chili with lots of flavor.Chili Rellanos lots of cheese. The ground beef in the burrito is well spiced. Not gourmet but interesting. Sort of a dive- Denver- landmark place.Just to the south is a large parking lot if the tiny one around the joint is full. It reminds me of a double wide trailer turned into a diner. Best for a weekday lunch.Character definitely not trendy.

Once a completely unknown Mexican 'Hole-in-the-Wall" joint spun out of the BBI, run by the same family, the word is seeping out that this is a good place to eat and/or hangout. One hopes that its growing notoriety does not produce the same negatives incurred by other previously unknown restaurants that made some "Best Of" list only to be overrun with crowds. BBII's probably the best known for its excellent green chili, seasoned to order and thick with meaty pork chunks, then served with cold draught beers. Try a "The Tiny" for lunch sometime and see if you get back to work the same day!. Since the tortillas are fresh at BBII my favourite meal is a beef and bean burrito topped with their green chili. The frijoles are made fresh as well to serve as an excellent side dish. Somehow the rice is subpar but then again every place has a dish that does not seem to work. Incidentally, their red chili is excellent as well and a good option when seeking a change from yet another green chili day in Denver.

fine family mexican dining? i don't think so, sorry guys. me and the family went to the bewery bar II a few years ago after getting some good reviews on it - needless to say from the rating, we never returned. we know what good mexican cooking is, trust me, plenty of grandparents and aunts and uncles on my hispanic side of the family have taught me well. this place does not make the cut. the service was slow, and the place wasn't even busy. the chips and salsa were boring. i got a green chile burger and fries. green chile was boring. fries were gross and stale. i can't remember what anyone else got but saying they were unimpressed is an understatement. anytime we drive by or hear about this place someone in my family goes "UGHHH"

Damn good! We hit this place up for lunch basically because people say this is the place to go in Denver for the Green Chili. They are right BBII's Green Chili is Tops. Just a heads up lunch goers, we got there on a Thursday at 11:45am and the place was already packed and by 12:45 it was clearing out. I was quite surprised for a place slightly off the path but hell, I know why. The Beef burrito smothered in Hot (5.25) was just hot enough. I've had much hotter (Santiagos) but this had the perfect balance between heat and flavor. As others have stated the GC is thinner but it does contain lots of chilis and huge chunks of Pork. I demolished the thing pretty quickly. As we were entering a guy leaving said the relenos were divine. I'll have to try that next time.

You want authentic? You want some of the best green chili you have ever had? Then you want Brewery Bar 2, this place is great. Some of the best if not the best green chili I have ever had! Get a Burrito smothered in it and thank me later!

This place has great green chile! Big chuncks of pork and any degree of spice you care for. The chips and salsa are nothing you will write home to mama about but face it, the Chile Rellenos make up for it! The bathrooms smell like a science project gone wrong so make sure you go before you visit the Brewery Bar. The service is very efficient. If you are looking for the servers to pump up your ego you will be sadly disappointed. They will take your order, get your food quickly and get you out the door so you can go use the restroom elsewhere. Remember it's all about the plates.

Four stars are exclusively for their green chili and chili rellenos (even with the egg roll wrapper) - pure crack. Their other Mexican food is classic Colorado style....saucy, gooey, cheesy - and it is very pedestrian at best.

Love this place. They are known for their #1 Special and it is obvious why. The food is amazing and so are the margs that pack a punch. Now, the tostito brand chips and salsa are about as "Tacky Texas" as the decor, but the product is worth it. Bring your shades, the neon is is in full effect. Oh yea, there is no brewery and not much of a bar so get there early because they close around sun down.

I don't get why a friend raved about this place. Serving sizes were plenty but the ground beef in the taco was completely lacking flavor. A fair amount of grease, too. And the slop that was presented as a cheese enchilada and bean burrito, was just that, slop. And what's with the Tostitos brand round tortilla chips and salsa from Pace or some other grocery stand brand. Completely unoriginal. The service was adequate but the server seemed to have a bit of an attitude. Be sure to avoid sitting at a booth or table at the end opposite the front entrance. I made the mistake and the tables are too close to the restrooms--scent travels. I was not impressed and will not return. Too many better-tasting alternatives. Brewery Bar II is a neighborhood bar that just happens to serve food that kinda resembles Mexican food. You can do better.

Despite being highly rated by almost every local magazine and newspaper for its green chile (and most recently the people's choice in 5280), I'm not a huge fan. It's good, but there's better green chile out there. It's more like New Mexican green chile, which is a lot thinner.

Sad.

BB2 is a no frills, good Mexican restaurant with great green chile. What the Cherry Cricket is to burgers in Denver, I'd say BB2 is to the burrito, enchilada, rellenos. I usually get the #1 or #7. Worth checking out!

    (4)
  • Suzy S.

Had an awesome burrito here, and the margarita's were awesome.

Avoid! Terrible food. Bad green Chile. Way over priced.

fine family mexican dining? i don't think so, sorry guys. me and the family went to the bewery bar II a few years ago after getting some good reviews on it - needless to say from the rating, we never returned. we know what good mexican cooking is, trust me, plenty of grandparents and aunts and uncles on my hispanic side of the family have taught me well. this place does not make the cut. the service was slow, and the place wasn't even busy. the chips and salsa were boring. i got a green chile burger and fries. green chile was boring. fries were gross and stale. i can't remember what anyone else got but saying they were unimpressed is an understatement. anytime we drive by or hear about this place someone in my family goes "UGHHH"

Despite being highly rated by almost every local magazine and newspaper for its green chile (and most recently the people's choice in 5280), I'm not a huge fan. It's good, but there's better green chile out there. It's more like New Mexican green chile, which is a lot thinner.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
