Blue Ocean offers a fantastic lunch experience for the Denver Tech Center office worker. It has become one of the go-to restaurants for staff at my company, and for good reason. The service is fast and efficient, the prices reasonable, and the food good. As the entree is prepared, you have the option of soup - the standard fare. The miso is better than average. Lunch entrees are served with a crab cheese wanton and egg roll. Both are likely pre-packaged, but above average in flavor. Entree-wise, especially good is the basil chicken. The chicken is well-prepared and seasoned, accompanied by bell peppers, other veggies and basil. The inclusion of jalapeno slices sates my desire for heat, though some might find it too hot for their tastes. The jalapenos are always of high quality with a rich pepper flavor. The Mongolian beef is very good, the beef being tender, definitely more than most preparations of the dish. Can sometimes have too many green onions. The rice needs a special call-out. Rice is oft-viewed as a necessary yet forgettable part of the Asian-themed meal. At Blue Ocean, the rice is phenomenal. White or brown, it possess an even texture and great mouthfeel, with just enough adhesion to make it easier to grab with chopsticks. Dinner is one area remiss. I dined here in the evening once, and was disappointed to find about the same portions as lunch, but with no complimentary wanton and egg roll, for a higher price. One did find attractive flatware and cloth napkins, and some sort of plate ornament crafted from a root vegetable. However, it was not worth the cost. Judging from the filled tables I consistently see, most of their business must come over the lunch hour. Finally, a Yelper mentioned having difficulty with delivery. The pair of times i've ordered delivery I encountered no problems. The food was delivered to me five miles away in 40 minutes and was hot and correct.

OK American-Chinese food. Some dishes better than others. Some good meal package deals. BUT the delivery is always lightning fast. And free if you live close.

Talk about greesy and causing bad stomach pains. I have eaten in and out of here. Neither is good. Do not try going back to work after eating this, unless you feel your passing the time would be better spent in the bathroom. Seriously bad food. Great customer service though

Blue Ocean has a lot of great vegetarian options, and uses gluten products as a substitute in almost any dish on their menu. Some of my favorites are Thai Curry with vegetarian chicken, Mongolian vegetarian beef, Basil vegetarian chicken, and the Hot and Sour Soup, which I've been told several times is a water broth, and very delicious. The tofu dishes are also very yummy, so no need to specifically select the gluten substitutes. Great place, prices are about $8-12 for lunches, and awesome for good Chinese vegetarian fare in the DTC area.

Crab cheese wontons with no crab, undercooked and bland fried rice, general tso's chicken that's soggy on the outside and dry on the inside. Not recommended.

It was your run of the mill Chinese food..including the quality of the meat. Good service. I'm not a big fan of Chinese food in the first place.

My current go to place for Chinese in the DTC. Portion sizes are good and food is above average. My current favorite is Garlic Chicken. Come with hefty amount of chicken (not breaded) and also a good amount of mixed vegetables, which I REALLY appreciate. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, peppers, and mushrooms. I don't prefer the sesame chicken or sesame beef here (too much breading), but the sesame tofu is good. Lo Mein also good. Can't go wrong with the family deal, you'll have food for days! $26 gets you two entrees, rice, 2 large soups, egg rolls, and crab cheese wontons. Delivery typically fast.

One of the most uncomfortable dining experiences my husband and I experienced. A few weeks ago, we were searching for a restaurant that served hot pot nearby so we decided to eat at Blue Ocean since most "bad" reviews were based on delivery. We ordered sesame chicken for our kids who quickly and surprisingly devoured it. It was just an average dish but it filled up our 3 toddlers so that was a plus. My husband and I ordered their "unlimited" hot pot, which is about $30 per person even though we shared There was a large variety of items to choose from to add into the broth. However, many items weren't available that night. I didn't mind that the items we chose weren't available but it did bother me that they didn't inform us until we kept questioning about the items that weren't given to us. Vegetables were wilted, fish was frozen, and mushrooms were not cut well. Overall, paying $75+ for two dishes is overboard especially with the lack of fresh ingredients. Another thing that put us off from ever coming back is the constant, "Watch out for your kids, the pot is really hot." We got it the first two times (and already know this because we eat it often) but after the 5+ time, I was annoyed.

This review is for delivery. I live 4.2 miles away, so they charged me a $2.00 delivery charge. We ordered three dishes at 6:20 PM on a Friday night. They delivered them 45 minutes later - oops, I mean they delivered two dishes, one of which was something we had ordered. We called them back & they offered a credit for our next order but I requested that they fix the order. 45 minutes later, our corrected order arrived. So for all that, -2 stars. The Mo Shu Pork (their spelling) was quite good. The steamed dumplings were cold (due to the delivery problems) but they were all right. The Water Boiled Hot Triple Delight was awful. It was described as "slice chicken, beef and fish filets in hot chili oil and red chili pepper paste cooked with mixed vegetables" [sic]. It did not have any red pepper flavor at all - there were tons of whole black peppercorns, which totally over-seasoned the dish & were awkward to chew as well. The dish was so salty I rinsed out my mouth after a few bites. Totally disgusting & not at all what the description sounded like. +1 star for the yummy mushu, no points awarded/deducted for average dumplings, & -2 stars for the awful Triple Delight. I'm glad we insisted on getting our order fixed instead of taking a credit for a future order, because there's never going to be another order from Blue Ocean.

I placed an order on Saturday at 4pm shortly after they opened. The food delivered was clearly not made the same day because the vegetables were wilted and the sauce was dry on top. Very expensive leftovers. I made an account because I was very disappointed, would not recommend.

Me and my Asian friend came here for a late lunch. It was my first time eating hot pot in a restaurant, so I must have looked very excited. I hope that's why all employees were looking at me so much. The place was not busy, I think we were only people in the restaurant. When they brought a hot pot menu, to my disappointment it was all in chinese! So I had to entrust my hunger to my friend. Waiter spoke in chinese too, all the time.. but it was translated to me that they will have a menu in english if I come back next week. Quite cute! It's all you can eat, you can imagine we order a lot to taste. And food was fantastic, I especially liked their selection of hot pot sauces.

I love this place! Ordered from here several times now, trying different dishes. I love love love that the veggies in the dishes are always fresh, plentiful, and never overcooked. The rice is also always cooked perfectly, and seasoned deliciously. They always tell me 30-45 minutes for delivery, and it is usually 30 or less (we do tend to order outside of rush times). All the dishes we've tried so far are at least good, and many are fantastic (haven't tried the sushi though - I only trust sushi from designated sushi restaurants). I love the garlic sauce dishes - tons of veggies and the sauce is amazing. I also frequently ask for no bell peppers or no onions in my dish, and they always get it right. Everything is a great price with no extra charge for delivery.

This place is fantastic. Food is good though pricey, but you get what you pay for. The menu is long and everything I've tried has been good, but the best option is their hot pot, which is not on the menu. I've come here on weekend evenings and it's always full with people eating hot pot. Staff is very friendly, delivery is very fast and the atmosphere is relaxed. I'll be back!

A great waitresses! Abut be very careful with hot pot, We paid $158 for 5, no alcohol, just 2 cokes, it's $25 each plus they add o $3:00 each for sauce, WAY OVER PRICED, and not at all clear, Worst I've ever been cheated

I am not usually too picky with my Asian foods, but this place was terrible.... I ordered 3 things for delivery: thai curry, avocado roll and cali roll... Not one thing had flavor. The rice on the rolls were dry and the avo was slightly browned already (which tells me it was not made fresh. And the curry... ITS CURRY it should have tons of flavor! I put so much soy sauce and hot sauce on it so I could eat it. I also asked for extra broccoli and there was not one broccoli in the dish! Will not be ordering from here again.

This little hole in the wall place has some of the best Asian food I've ever had in my life. I got in the habit of going here at least once a week, it's so delicious. The only thing I don't like, is sometimes I feel a little rushed by the staff. Meaning like I will stop eating for four or five minutes or so and they will come take it and put it in a box. I don't know if it's just fast service, or if they are trying to expedite things. It's always clean, consistent and excellent. One of my family members suggested it to me, and I'm so glad. It is so hard to see, I would not have gone in there otherwise.

We went to Blue Ocean about six hours after I had not one but two root canals so needless to say, I really wasn't in the mood to be chewing anything at that time. I've driven by Blue Ocean a number of times but never heard anyone talk about it and it's so tiny from the outside that it's hard to miss, being nestled right in betwee Dazbog and Fiocchi's in the heart of DTC. We walked in for dinner and there was no one else in there besides the wait staff and even that was minimal. There was server who was very chatty but not overbearing or annoying and she was really helpful. We learned that all the sauces are made by hand and there is just one guy in the kitchen cooking his little heart away each day for about 13 hours (with the assistance of one other guy in the kitchen prepping stuff). Still my mouth was still hating me, I started with hot and sour soup then we split the shrimp in garlic sauce. I've never order anything in garlic sauce when I go out for Chinese so I thought I would try something new. OMG it was absolutely amazing. Hearing that the sauce was homemade each day and not frozen made complete sense because the sauce was nothing like I've ever tried before, it made my angry mouth not so angry!! Along with that, they serve you an array of fresh, colorful veggies so not only did it satisfy my tummy, it was visually appealing. Along with Chinese, they offer Thai and Japanese dishes at very reasonable prices. They have bomb lunch specials so I will definitely creep in there one of the days for a cheap, bountiful lunc. Something tells me they won't be so empty then!

I would recommend the Blue Ocean Special Wonton Soup. It serves two people and has plenty of vegetables and beef, chicken, and shrimp. Some of our other favorites are orange chicken and basil beef. The orange chicken has real orange peel in it so it's not just orange syrup and isn't overly sweet like some I have eaten. Delivery is usually pretty quick for us, we do tip driver so it could help I suppose? The rice containers are smaller now and I wish they would provide more as rice is inexpensive and a good filler that makes the entrees go farther.

I have been going here for a few years. Yesterday i noticed all new waitstaff, and some fresh paint. Unfortunate that , they changed the kitchen staff as well. I sent my beef with garlic sauce back. the meat was sour and tough. My chicken came out and the portions are half of what they were a month ago. I inquired if they had changed management but was told no. I'm sure they did because if you look on the wall inside, the name has changed. The blue awning outside will be next. Steer clear, its not worth it any longer..

So I could feel a cold starting to kick in on this cold October day, and wanted to stop for some Pho but had forgotten the Pho spot shut down after a fire....so not wanting to drive all the way to Arapahoe I stopped here and man Im glad I did! I didnt get the Pho bowl but decided to try the Spicy Korean Bowl and DEFINITELY the smart decision. Perfectly spicy, full of veggies, beef, shrimp, chicken pork.... I asked the waitress for a to go cup to bring the left over broth with me! Definitely a good back up option to Pho! As an appetizer I got some wings...they were un flavored but came with a side sauce that wasnt that special so just ate them plain, but big and meaty.

We have been ordering from here for a few months...on average once a week delivery (we have a new baby) and they are so inconsistent with delivery times. They will always say 45 minutes and sometimes it is 10 but sometimes it is well over an hour. If you try to speak with their manager they shrug you off and say well tonight we are busy. Considering we drop $30/week you think they would give you some respect. That and by the time the food gets here after an hour of waiting, it's still warm (not hot and by the time you finish eating it's cold) but anything fried is completely soggy :-( Finally this last time the delivery guy came I told him it had been 1hr15min when we were told 45, I have him $1 tip for gas only and he mumbled something and threw my receipt on my porch! I was so blown away by this disrespect (and hunger) I didn't even know what to say! Called the manager and she said nothing :-/ looks like I'm finding a new place!

Linda and i came for the Hot pot. There really is a menu for Chinese people. We looked at the American menu and the Hot Pot was not on it. We had to look at the Chinese menu. The food was very good. A bit on the pricy side. A fun place to take a date.

I rarely write bad reviews but this has got to be the worst sushi I've ever had. I called to order delivery and I asked for their Blue Moon Special, which they no longer have and thought I was crazy when I asked to order it like they've never heard of this before (on the menu, btw). Then I changed my order to spicy tuna rolls, also on the menu but they don't make tuna rolls either! So, again I change my order to spicy salmon rolls and they don't make spicy salmons rolls...just salmon rolls. So, I order this along with some fried rice and chicken teriyaki...all terrible. Save yourself the money and make Top Ramon or go to McDonalds and your meal will be better.

Bad service. Two other groups of the exact same size that came in after me were seated before me. They acknowledged me but I was never seated. Eventually I just left.

The restaurant is small with a number of booths as well as tables and you're basically seated in the main corridor (long hallway) of the place. The interior isn't exactly the most plush Chinese restaurant in Denver but definitely let the food speak for itself. Finding this place at night is difficult because they don't have a a light up sign. With that said, they are located to the right of Fiocchi's Pizzeria. Tonight, we were the only ones in the restaurant. However, their take out and delivery was super busy. Our waitress was kind and helpful. After striking up a conversation I found out a couple things about the restaurant. All sauces are handmade, meaning no vats of premade sauce. The second is that there is only one chef that makes everything. We ordered hot and sour soup, Thai spring rolls, lettuce wraps and garlic chicken. All the dishes had their distinct flavors and came out hot. They have a good amount of Chinese dishes but also Thai dishes and some sushi. The vegetables in the garlic chicken were cooked great with that extra crunchy freshness. We will be back soon. I will be interested to see how their sushi is as well as their basil chicken!

The prices and lunch specials of this place is awesome. The service is ok really, and the food isn't the greatest Chinese I've had, but it's not the worst and is still pretty decent. When you order delivery they are always fast and on time, no mistakes. The reason why I wouldn't give it 4 stars is because the service inside is kind of rude and the quality of the food isn't worth 4 stars. Other than that it's not a bad joint.

Ordered online in the morning for a lunch time delivery. I paid ahead of time with a credit card, tip included. Will never do that again. Lunch 45 minutes late. Salt and Pepper Shrimp - not what I was expecting. I like the lightly breaded kind, this had a thick, almost "beer batter" type breading. Ordered the mild. Came drowning in jalapenos. (Jalapenos? Is this a fusion place? There are no, oh I don't know, hot Asian spices?) Mouth still burning. Smoked Salmon sushi - good flavor. Very minimalistic. Salmon, rice, seaweed wrapper. Period. Salmon had odd texture - previously frozen? I might try the place again and pick different menu items.

I give them two stars for convenience, it seems every time we order, they messed it up some way. you pay extra for the shrimp and they give you three!!! The delivery drivers arent very nice, and the lady who takes the orders, its hard to understand or for her to understand us. I ordered fried rice, shrimp and chicken, i got it with pork, and they wouldn't exchange it.

I have ordered from Blue Ocean 3 previous times without an issue. The forth time on (12/19/2012) was a disaster. Over 2.5 hours for a lunch delivery placed at 10:50 A.M.. I called to check on the status and I was lied to by the person an the phone and then by the delivery driver. I engaged EAT24 on the issue and once they called the restuarant, appologies came flowing my way from the restuarant. I was offered a free meal the next time I came in, but I wasn't going to give people that lied to me any more business. Time heals wounds and today (6/5/2013) I went into the restuarant placed my order to a person who didn't seem to care if I was there or not and then told her about the promised free entree. She looked it up on your computer and it clearly stated "free entree on next visit" the lady went back and spoke to a manager who then came to the register. The two spoke back in forth. Then said ok, thats fine, but then she said I would have to pay the difference between the lunch and dinner portion even though what I have ordered 4 other times and what I ordered today is only on the dinner menu. I said no thanks, and said if my business and the $25 - $50 orders I make for me and my team for lunch meetings are worth losing over a dollar, then goodbye. The manager then changed her mind about charging me. I still said no thanks becuase the true character of the establishment was already made known.

A funny thing happens whenever I go on a lunch out to Blue Ocean with co-workers. My food always comes out last. Always, always, always. It's like a law of Blue Ocean. More than once, my friend Kristen has said "they have to kill the tofu, I guess," when I've ordered tofu. Yesterday it was "they have to kill the eggplant." I think I order less popular menu items. I'm guessing they have a big pan of sesame chicken going at any given time and can scoop up some of that. I don't know. Anyway, the lunch special is great here! Prices range from $6.50 to about $8 and you get your choice of soup or salad, entree, choice of rice, a wonton and an eggroll. I always have leftovers for the next day. And despite my entree coming out last, it's still easy to get in and out of here in an hour and feel like you've had a leisurely lunch. I usually get sesame tofu or Thai style eggplant. The nice thing about the eggplant dish here is that it's not as cloyingly sweet and sticky as other Thai style eggplant dishes I've found, but vinegary rather. They also add jalepeno slices. While I don't eat them whole, they provide a nice heat. Despite ALWAYS being the last to eat, Blue Ocean is a DTC lunchtime win.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would!!! I am so appalled at the quality of the food, I ordered a shrimp dish and it was not shrimp you can't tell me what it was but it was the most gawd awful thing I ever put in my mouth!! I am so utterly disgusted, my friend got the sesame chicken and it was dry dry dry, the only good thing was the creamcheese wontons which I hope you can't mess up! The miso soup was watered down, I am just so upset I wasted my money on this place! I pray I don't get sick after eating this food!

I find this place a classic neighborhood Chinese restaurant, with above average quality in the ingredients. Every time I try a new place, I hope (in vain) for some echo of the food I had in China. I wouldn't call it authentic by my limited experience, but it's reliable and good. They are less timid than most on spice - for example, the Hot and Spicy soup is actually Hot and Spicy, which is so often not the case. Their Thai Style Chicken is full of jalepenos - avoidably big if they get to be too much. A large menu to explore - check out the Salt and Pepper Shrimp along the way. The people are very friendly and helpful and guided us to gluten-free choices for one of our party when we asked. I've written off at least one other nearby Chinese restaurant because the quality of the food itself it a step above here.

Just ordered take out. My first and last time. I placed my order at 6:45 for delivery. I was given a 45-60 min delivery time. It arrived at 8 pm. I ordered a large wonton soup..had 5 small wontons. It was basically broth in a 20 oz container with some sliced green onions. Also ordered lettuce wraps. There was no description of any menu items on the menu. So I figured they were lettuce wraps filled with a ground beef mixture of water chestnuts, onions, garlic and ginger, like I have had at other restaurants. Not the case. What arrived was 4 large peices of ice berg lettuce. In a separate container was small bits of oily fried chicken in a sweet sauce with peas, carrots, onions, and some little crispy white things...not what I was expecting. Not sure if this is what comes with the lettuce wraps or if my ordered was messed up. My boyfriend ordered the sesame chicken. Nothing special. On the dry side. Oh, and they forgot the fried rice. So I paid basically $10 for some mediocre sesame chicken. No egg roll or wonton was included either...not sure if those are included with dinner entrees but I noticed they were for lunch entrees. And last, but not least, was crab-cream cheese wontons. Tasted just like every other chinese place, but they were good. No crab from what I could tell, but they were what I expected. Also, no napkins or forks were included in the bag. Shouldn't those things automatically come with "take out"? Never again will I order from them. What a dissapointment.

OK, the only reason we really got food from this place was because they included a menu in our apartment "welcome" folder. Note to self: just because it's there doesn't mean you have to eat it. We placed a delivery order, but they had such a hard time with it - from understanding the order (General Tso's and pad thai? Not that difficult!) to the credit card number to the address. We sort of expected to never get our food; however, it was actually delivered pretty quick. The pad thai had very little flavor (and NO spice), and somehow the General Tso's was more like sweet-n-sour instead. I like my spice, so I'll be getting it elsewhere...

Typical American-Chinese restaurant menu, so if you're looking authentic Chinese disheslook elsewhere. That said, if you have grown up with these dishes via other Chinese restaurants across this great land, you will not be surprised at what comes out on your platter at Blue Ocean. The lunch special is generous: First a choice of soup (hotand sour, miso, eggdrop, or wonton) or salad (handful of greens). As some sort of nod to health, I've tried the salad- they're not trying too hard, but the greens were fresh. The dressing is odd, maybe too much so sauce in it or something. The soup always comes out hot, though I'm not sure if they make it in-house... again, these soups consistently look and taste the same across this great land. I do like the hot and sour, it's chunkier than I've encountered before. With lunches you get a crab cheese wanton and an egg roll. Both seem to be bulk purchase fare, with the wonton lacking actual real crab meat and the egg roll filling tasteless. I eat the wonton because it's something crunchy with cream cheese in it, but the only reward in eating the wonton is grease. The dishes come out fast and are nicely stir-fried. I take issue with the amount of oil shining on everything, it seems like they could cut down a bit. Other than my subjective oil issue everything has been tasty enough. The food is consistent, served hot, and with good ingredients, and service is great - every is friendly and there always seems to be a table ready when you get there. Still, like most Chinese restaurants, the food seems to be more of a commodity business than an act of nourishing. I'd bump them up half a star but can't give them 4. Cheers.

Went there for lunch and got the sesame tofu, which was good. One thing i liked was the fact that they put vegetables in their sesame tofu most places just give you the tofu and rice. They were fast in making the meal and lunch was reasonably priced. The sauce was a little runny. I like my hot and spicy sauce usually a little thick. overall it was a-ok meaning i wouldn't avoid the place like the plague but won't go out of my way to obtain their food.

I know a lot of coworkers who love this place so take my review with a grain of salt. First of all, I think dishes should be brought to the table all at once. Second, their food almost has an artificial taste to it. It's not bad but tastes saltier than a typical Chinese restaurant. Not my cup of tea but not much worse than average.

    (3)
  • Josh S.

Lunch is a great deal. The style is a little different than other American Chinese places I've eaten at... but in a good way. The General Tso's was all white meat, which was great. Salad was mixed greens and was high quality. I'll be going back for sure.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
