Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I'm obsessed with this place!!! The salsas are amazing (especially the green creamy-ish one) and are enough reason to go to Agave. The margaritas are great (get the strawberry jalapeño, the rosa, or try some yummy sangria). There is a wide variety of tacos without meat (yay for me!)...the quinoa con elote is the favorite of my veggie & meat eating friends. The location creates a great ambience & the service is usually good.

Waited 15 min for anyone to even acknowledge us and ended up walking out. Sad thing is, it wasn't even busy. Sorry, Agave, too many other restaurants in Wash Park to go to.
(1)Brian P.
If nothing else, at least get the salsas and margs! You can't go wrong! The chips are salty and their three salsas are fantastic! You can tell that they've got that homemade love put into them. We had several of their margaritas and refreshing is the first word that comes to mind. The tacos were KILLER! My personal fav was the Adobada. If you like Machete's in Cherry Creek, then trust me when I say this place is much better in both the food and the pricing.
(5)Brian B.
Friendly staff, nice outdoor seating. Food was kind of bland and uninspiring. Had a few different kinds of tacos and some chips and guac. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.

We planned to eat at a different restaurant in the Washington Park area when we happened to park near Agave Taco and decided to give it a try instead. I loved the indoor/outdoor patio feel - the patio has gorgeous flower pots and misters for a warm day. The interior is wood and steel and very cool ! I ordered a rosa margarita and my husband tried the jalapeño both were very good. The homemade chips are killer - I liked the mild salsa the best - not because I can't take the heat - but because it was a fresh light salsa. The hot habenero salsa was good as well - I didn't care for the mild but the husband liked it the best. The guacamole was spot on delicious! With just a touch of jalapeño. It was the perfect texture and taste to pair with the chips. The tortillas are homemade and delicious! I ordered a carnitas taco that was good but the al pastor taco was outstanding with a bright fresh pineapple salsa. The husband liked his chicken tacos too. We have been on a quest for a great Mexican restaurant and I think we just found it.

We went here for a girls night and were pleasantly surprised. Sat outside on a Saturday night- great patio. Waited until 8 pm on Saturday in order to get happy hour pricing on drinks. The margaritas were pretty solid, but the best drinks were the spiked agua frescas! Prickly Pear and Vodka! Chips and salsas were good, tacos were kind of just tacos. But we 4 each had lots of drinks, 3 tacos, and split chips and nachos (girls night calories do NOT count) and our bills were all $25. Why a steal!

Some of the best tacos and margs I've had. My mom said it's the best margarita she's had in Denver (we are from southern California). They have a good happy hour menu and a nice little patio. It's small but I've never had too much trouble finding a place to sit.

This small, yet cozy spot nestled on a charming side street of S. Gaylord street has all the potential a business would desire: location, location, location. Which drives me to my next point - when you have a top notch location you're already at an advantage to get people through your door. So why not take the opportunity to make the customer experience a full-blown five star. The lingua tacos were delicious. Tender and tasty. I just wished I could've ordered them sooner. The margaritas were a generous pour and pretty strong. I just wished I could've ordered them sooner. The server was friendly, yet all alone, and a tad overwhelmed. After visiting us once and promptly serving our drinks, chips, and salsa, he was never to be seen again until we moved inside and realized he was solo with a pretty packed lunch crowd. So much so, they had to pull some help from their sister restaurant next door who then proceeded to forget to take our order, too. A long while later we finally ordered. Thank goodness the food didn't take nearly as long to grace our table with its presence. I definitely will return to Agave Taco Bar as I think this was an isolated incident. In addition to being very apologetic, the food, margaritas, and Happy Hour deals ($8 for 2 tacos and a Tecate) are worth a trip...when you finally get to order.

Good place for some good tacos! Still left me feeling just ok as I left, hence the 3 stars. The positives: Tacos taste very very good. The tortillas are really the star of the show! Regular tacos come on homemade corn tortillas, vegetarian tacos comes on spinach poblano tortillas and the seafood tacos come on squid ink tortillas! Service is FANTASTIC. My tacos came out in like 3 minutes! The negatives: The place is tiny. Definitely a place I'd rather go in the summer to use the deck outside. Still a little on the expensive side in my opinion for tacos. (3 tacos each for 2 people and one Mexican Mule drink was over 35.00) We didn't even get chips and salsa! Boo to that. For the price, the tacos were just ok. DENVER: can we have a taco revolution please?! I want tasty fun tacos (with good ingredients) for 1.00-2.50 not 3.50-6.00 EACH.

I'm so confused at why agave only has a 3 star average... I loved my experience here. But tacos are my favorite things in the entire world.. so I am definitely biased hahaha My friend and I came here for Sunday brunch around noon and there were several available tables.. so not too packed.. We ordered chips which comes with 3 different salsas.. my friend really likes spicy so we got the 2 spiciest salsas and one mild one. All of them were awesomeee :) I ordered 2 tacos and a rapido breakfast burrito (miniature) and my friend ordered 3 tacos. Al pastor is always my favorite wherever I go, so I had to try agave's. Did NOT disappoint! :) I loved every bite! I also tried a breakfast taco which had shredded beef and that was also delicious. we were shocked to be so full from what we ordered... the chips definitely fill you up so that 3 tacos are more than plenty! The tortilla is also handmade and amazingggg! There is only 1 coed bathroom.. but we didn't have to wait too long to use it. Service was kind of slow.. but it's Sunday brunch.. it's ok to slow down and enjoy each others company while waiting. I would definitely come back. Especially for taco Tuesdays and happy hour deals.
(5)Marquis B.
A mixture of traditional and fusion tacos, treated in a gourmet style. The traditional tacos are solid and their flavor enhanced with good, traditional ingredients. I appreciate adding in the spices and vegetables directly to the taco. This place does salsas really well, too, so don't skimp on the chips and salsas. Drinks are also very good, with more than enough alcohol. A very solid option.
(4)Elizabeth B.
Cute spot! Excellent jalepeno margarita and pretty good tacos.
(3)Rachel B.
Please try the Agave Ensalada!! One of the best salads I've ever had. And healthy too! Also the Jalapeño margaritas are excellent. Good deals during happy hour. Will be returning again soon for another salad.
(5)Vilma S.
Had a Living Social Deal and came for lunch with a friend and I wish now I had gotten more vouchers but will come back even without one. We walked in and were able to choose our own table. Drew, our server, was very attentive. They have great deals on street tacos and they make their tortillas fresh all day. My friend started out with the Watermelon Margarita--very tasty and I had the Modelo Especial. They had a butternut squash taco for the daily special and it was very, very flavorful. Then had the Mahi-Mahi and carnitas. My friend had the carnitas and arrachera tacos. All were well presented and delicious. They have a good Happy Hour and also Weekend Brunch which I want to try both. They also have a special of 2 tacos for $2 at 2pm. There is plenty of free street parking. Will definitely be coming back!
(4)Greg G.
best tacos in Denver! Great patio, Great Food, Great Services, I read their patio was vote the top 18 best patios in Denver I can see why I love this place. I live in the neighborhood glad their here
(5)Laine W.
Awesome happy hour and relaxing atmosphere! We sat on the patio and it was very pleasant. I recommend the salsa trio and classic marg (both on happy hour will only run you about $8) My only criticism is that the margs could be a little stronger, but that may be a personal preference! Overall, a very charming place with good food and friendly service. We will definitely be back!

Started coming to Agave over a year ago when we moved to Colorado and LOVED It. The lamb and duck tacos are to die for!! The salsas are also amazing!!

My boyfriend and I went to this place on a Sunday evening, every seat was full, but it wasn't insanely busy. We waited 10 minutes for the bartender to event acknowledge our presence so we could get a drink while we waited for a table. Mind you, this entire 10 minute wait involved her standing right in front of us with no acknowledgement. So we finally get a table (yay! we're hungry!) and we decided to sit at the large table for 8, but leave the other 6 spots open for people who wanted to sit there. We told the hostess this and she was excited we were so accommodating. 3 people join us, and we mind our own business. The waitress comes to our table and we order our water and our chips and salsa, and tell the waitress to take the other 3 people's order while we decide on tacos. After she's done with the other group's order, she takes our taco order. Now, we ordered our food at the same time. They ordered chips & salsa, and a few tacos and a couple of mixed drinks. The got their drinks, chips, AND full order of tacos before we even got our waters refilled. Our waitress never came back to refill my water, and we never received our food. We walked out and went across the street and had a 500% better experience.

Was in Denver visiting a very fabulous friend of mine and she lives across the street from this place plus she had a living social deal - yes and yes! The vibe is super cute and the guy who greeted us (and was the server) was great and gave wonderful recommendations and, thankfully, steered me away from something that would have been too spicy for my tastes. #canthandelpico! I got two street tacos (the fish was so good...and this is coming from a Washington state girl so I know good, fresh fish ;) and a side of rice and beans, the perfect amount for a light lunch! My girlfriend got a prickly pear Margareta and it was strong! Which she appreciated :) They have a deal (I believe it's every day of the week?) where if you come and get tacos during the 2 o'clock hour it's two tacos for $2...not a bad deal! I don't live here but would definitely recommend it to anyone!

The food was meh. The service was even meh-er. We walked in at 7pm on Friday night, and we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. I would have chosen to leave, but we had a gift certificate we wanted to use. So we ordered drinks at the bar and waited. The drinks weren't made and handed to us... they printed out a ticket and placed it on the bar with 10-12 other drink tickets. 17 minutes later we were seated and our drinks were FINALLY made and brought over to our table. It would have been nice to have something to sip on while we waited awkwardly near their bus station/food service station. In the time we were waiting we heard a waitress tell 3 other groups of people that the wait was 50-55 minutes at least, and they could put their name on the list if they "wanted to" but that they were "going to be busy all night". Five minutes after we were seated, there were 3 bar stools and 2 tables that opened up and sat empty. So they lost 3 tables because they were feeling lazy. I got 3 different tacos and was not impressed with any of them, my husband got a huarache and a taco. He enthusiastically scarfed down the huarache and exclaimed how good it was, but I thought it tasted pretty awful. He didn't end up eating his taco, and it's still sitting in our fridge waiting to be transferred to the garbage. Side note- when they brought our food on one of their huge platters, the food runner told us not to ask for plates, because they had run out for the evening. How the F do you run out of plates at a restaurant? And don't TELL me not to ask for a plate. 1 margarita 1 agua fresca (virgin) 1 corona (in a can) 1 appetizer I forgot the name of (cheese, beans, tortillas) 4 tacos 1/2 order of huarche = over $45 before tip. I do not recommend, and I won't be going back.

I'm giving five stars for the chips and their salsa verde! I had three tacos; chicken tinga, al pastor, and fish. Kudos for hand made corn tortillas, but otherwise unmemorable with the fish having no seasoning or taste. The salsa verde is worth the trip if you like the heat!
(5)A S.
You have to be kidding me. Leftover prime rib from next doors brunch buffet, slapped into a tortilla with a little salsa does not an arrachera taco make! That's a bullsh*t move and you guys know it. I can't even.

Im really amazed at the bad, recent reviews this place has received in June. They were closing the kitchen down when I walked in for the very first time and I had an awesome experience there. First time visit was last night. I've been wanting to try this place out but always forget its there. My restaurant of choice (around the corner) was only serving their gross/fried late night happy hour food menu so I went to Agave instead. They let us order food even though their kitchen had just closed. We told them we were first timers. Their chips were really really good and their salsa selections were completely mind blowing with incredible flavors. The tacos we had were honestly some of the best I've had in a while. Street tacos are where it's at. I will be back for sure. OH and they serve frozen margs...because they actually have a machine for it!

Out by Wash Park we wanted to ride bikes and have a few drinks and we saw a sign for Agave Taco Bar and decided to try it and really glad we did. Locked up the bikes out front and sat outside on the patio. The prices are a little expensive, but luckily we found out we were there during happy hour. So margaritas were $3 and agua frescas were $3. First we had a cold can of Corona and then followed that up with some margaritas. Boy were they strong, but tasty! I order the $5 nachos on happy hour and the bf got 2 tacos. I like that the tacos are not on in a full meal and that you can just pick and choose. My nachos were delicious! Also, sitting by the window I could see them cutting up the produce, so you know it was fresh. The bf said the tacos were good. We will definitely be back when we're in the area. Especially for those 2 tacos for $2 dollars during the 2 o'clock happy hour.

We visited here for the first time last Friday night. We very VERY impressed. Our server was, thoughtful, funny, engaging and on the ball. The other diners, next to us on the patio, were very cool. They had their dog out there and my son loved playing with him. The server brought a bowl of water for the dog. The margaritas were delicious! My children were treated well! The server brought their beverages in no spill cups and suggested menu items for them. The food was delicious! All homemade tortillas-different flavor tortillas. The salsas were layered with delicious flavors. The refried black beans-perfectly spiced. Agave is a friendly, clean neighborhood eatery that delivers like a 4 star establishment. The patio feels like a low key unpretentious party, and the food, is fresh, local and excellent. We can't wait to go back!
(5)Sam D.
Went there this morning with wife and kids at 8:40, the prep chef said they were closed because the other employees hadn't shown up yet. Seriously?!? However the tacos and margaritas are awesome! Killer happy hour at 2pm.
(2)Henry N.
Tacos are amazing and they have a really nice patio/Open air seating. Prices are very reasonable especially during happy hour. Margaritas are the best around and they have a selection of fresh juices that I really dig.
(5)Angela A.
I was happy to see something with a different flavor coming to the hood. I really did like the tacos. The menu is expansive and can be a bit overwhelming to choose. So many of the tacos sound so good. We ordered an entire plate to share so we could get a good idea of the food, we had duck, shrimp, lengua, pork belly, beans, chicken. My friends and I enjoyed all of them. All of the tacos had wonderful flavor and were all stuffed full. The issue is the service. I wonder if this site is cursed with poor service. It was hardly busy and it took forever. We never even got our second round of margaritas. The worst part was that a server dropped a bunch of salsas while cleaning off a table near us, the salsa flew and hit all of us and a table behind us. We all had salsa on us, and it was all over my purse. The person who did this was clearly embarrassed and knew it went everywhere. He was apologetic but did nothing to remedy this situation. I thought for sure he would let the second round slide, but nope no offer at all. That's when we just said forget it, give us the bill, and we're out. What's up with the service here?? The Local was the same way.
(3)Miss C.
Since my last review the quality of this place has really gone down. The food has been pretty awful the past two times. Their patio is still nice though and their drinks have been consistent.
(2)Geoffry L.
Went here on Labor day. It took 1/2 an hour to have our order taken (after I asked to have our order taken), we almost left after getting the chips/salsa. Our drinks didn't get refilled, water was left empty. Looks like they forgot it was Labor day and staffed like a normal Monday. One server, One bar tender. It was a looong lunch. The food is good, but not amazing and there is a bunch of these street taco restaurants popping up in Denver and competition is tough on these super specialty tacos. Math was done wrong on the bill, had to rerun bill. Checked bank today and both bills were run , now contacting the bank to have one reversed. It was not the fault of the waitress, it was the management that put the staff in this frantic situation.
(2)Samantha M.
I am giving 3 stars because the service has been slow with each visit. With that being said I keep coming back for more. The tacos are delicious and the margaritas are well crafted. For $1 taco day you can easily fill up from eating 3 tacos. If it's slow you have a good chance of getting decent service but if it's busy be prepared to wait for your server to get to you.
(3)Chris H.
This is a place that I really wanted to like. It has a great location for me, a great vibe and on a warm day it is a great place to relax with some food. I have to agree with one of the previous reviews that none of the three salsa's blew me away and the chips were just ok. Probably my biggest complaint was that service was slow and not very attentive at all. The tacos would fall into the same category of being good...but not great...thus the A-OK rating.
(3)Sherri S.
The food was as 3 stars says A-OK. We started with the chips and salsas and guac. The guac was delicious but the chips (though homemade) were hard and cold and neither of us were impressed by any of the three salsas. We're not sure which three our server gave us but all three were very pureed. Made me wish I had asked for the spicy pico. We ordered three tacos each for our main course. We both had the el pastor, I had the pescado (catch of the day), and the puffed chicken, which was shredded chicken with homefries in the taco. He tried the lamb and the pork belly. I found all three of my tacos tasty but the meat was very dry like it was cooked that morning and only lukewarm. But it wasn't dry due to lack of toppings. All had great flavor and ingredients. The fish taco was my favorite. All my fiance said about his tacos was eh, it's ok. To touch on service, I don't know what the fish was. Our waitress never told us when she set the food down. Nor did we know about the daily specials until the bartender was telling another table that he was helping out with. So we split part of their daily special which was a lobster chorizo tamale. It came out on the plate in several pieces looking like it had been microwaved and it too was still cold in the middle. I guess I don't know why I wasn't expecting frozen lobster, but I wasn't so I was disappointed in the chewiness of it. The coldness was not just the food, the entire restaurant was freezing. It is an old building so I don't think there was much they could do about poor insulation without gutting it. I was even sitting by a small space heater in the back. Maybe the draft is why the food wasn't warm? For drinks he tried the watermelon margarita, which again was ok. I had the jalapeno marg, and for me, this was the best part of my dinner. I love spicy things and this drink hit the mark. I love spicy and it was spicy even for me. Don't expect jalapeno flavor and none of the kick. I love the idea and the location but there are many other street taco shops in Denver that would win over this place. This place can't quite beat out $1 tacos from El Diablo (rest in peace) or MezCal.
(3)Steve E.
Service has been bad every visit and our Cinco de Mayo treatment tops them all. Stopped in at 8pm and asked for a table for 3. We were told it was a 90 minute wait and they took our name and wrote it down. Came back at exactly 9:30pm and was told they were closed and they stopped seating people at 8:30pm. No apology. No explanation. That was it. I want to like this place as they put out good food/Margs and have a cool atmosphere but the service and management are just brutal.
(1)Amanda C.
Why is this place not downtown?? First time visit for me last week and I absolutely loved it! The service was prompt and consistent throughout our dinner. Great outdoor atmosphere and phenomenal margaritas. If you are down in Wash Park area, this is a must to check out!
(5)Christina F.
Went to Agave tonight... Not impressed. If you have ever seen the shows on Food Network about why a restaurant is failing... It's usually because the servers have forgotten that they are at their job.. And not at a party for themselves. Tonight while we were there.. We saw the bartenders/servers doing Jamison shots with the customers... And talking s##t about other customers. I guess if you are a restaurant in that area you don't have to worry about repeat customers because there is always so much volume of people. Pretty expensive for street tacos... 6 tacos chips, salsa and guacamole.. 2 Coronas.. 2 Agua Frescas.. $55
(1)Dina F.
This was our first time here. I think it is fairly new so I really wanted to give it a break. However I am not sure I'd go back. First my salad. It looked good but it smelled horribly, like something was bad. I kind of just rationalized it was the manchego cheese and ate around it, although it was hard to get past the smell. I should of assumed it was out of the ordinary when I watched the waitresses smelling around the food station to find what smelled just before delivering my dish. Then when we ordered a 2nd round of our drinks and mine was wrong. Again I let it go because it wasn't a big deal and I didn't want to wait to get my servers attention to change the drink. So we paid and we were enjoying our drinks when I discovered what could of easily just been a lemon seed swimming in my drink, but it had too perfect of a shape to let this go. I fished it out and it was actually a sharp piece of metal, I assume from the top of the drink pours. At this point since we paid already it was impossible to flag our waiter down so finally as we got up to leave we let them then know there was this metal in my drink. They had no clue what to do about that so we left, highly unlikely we will return. Too bad...they did have freshly made chips!

We live nearby so we've walked to this spot several times, but it's always been too packed to even have a beverage .... we assumed the food must be amazing. After making it to the bar tonight for a few tacos and Margs, I gotta say, not that amazing. Good, but not blow your pants off great. I think because the place looked so sloppy the food became less impressive.... Jen the bartender, and our server, did a good job and was sweet, but it just looked like there was no manager or front of the house watching the house. Sadly we left not thinking we'll go back.
(2)Alison L.
I am astonished at Agave only having an average of 3 stars. I give them 5 stars because I love their food, and I think they deserve better than 3 stars. That said, they probably don't have *the best* tacos in town, but they are quality, delicious, affordable eats. Coming from a frugal grad student surviving almost exclusively on student loans, I feel like that means a lot. I live a fair distance from Agave, probably 5 miles or so, but it's always worth it to me. Service has been good and friendly every time I've gone, with the exception of a forgotten order the first time, which they took off the bill without a fuss. I especially love Agave in the warmer months, due to their patio seating (it should be noted that it's right on Mississippi, and a city bus goes by every so often, but that hasn't bothered me). (I don't think they have bike parking right in front of the restaurant, but I feel certain that there's a rack or two nearby on the block).
(5)Kevin A.
I can't comment on the food because we never got served...walked in, advised to sit wherever we'd like...sat at the middle table right in front of the bar. Passed by multiple times by multiple wait staff and was never once acknowledged. After 15 minutes we left...horrible service, won't be going back.

BEWARE OF FOREIGN OBJECTS! A couple of friends and I decided to try out this new restaurant in Wash Park tonight. At first we were all really impressed. The drinks were delicious as were the tacos. The mgr came to our table and introduced himself. We each ordered two street tacos to start. They were fantastic, albeit a little pricy. We enjoyed them so much we all ordered more. One of my friends found a piece of hard plastic (about 1.5 inches long) in his new taco. It looked like it might have been a piece of a cocktail stirrer. My friend told our waitress about it and she in turn told the mgr. He came over to our table but didn't seem very alarmed. My friend had only taken two bites of his taco and we assumed they would replace it. Finally we flagged our waitress down and my friend asked if she was bringing him a new taco. She said, "Oh! Would you like another one?" After a few minutes she brought him a new taco. When we received our bill, the mgr had taken two margaritas off of our total bill but we were charged for all of our tacos! I've never worked in a restaurant, but if a customer finds a foreign object in their food, I feel that the mgr needs to bend over backwards to try and remedy the situation. The lack of response was disturbing. I won't be going back.

This place is solid - great tacos, great appetizers, and delicious watermelon agua fresca. The only negative I noticed is that there was only one staffer serving during lunch on weekdays, so it was a little slow (not his fault!). The food was wonderful, so next time I'll go back for dinner.
(4)DJ P.
Decent food, average Margs, GLACIAL service. Unless you have acouple of hours to kill, skip it. Too bad, the menu is great and you can't beat the location.. ..
(2)Ariel K.
Good cheap, happy hour margs. Regular or watermelon margs for 3 bucks during happy hour from 3-6, which includes weekends. I had the jalapeño marg, and it good, but be warned not for the faint of heart, it was HOT! Looking forward to taking the husband here for date night happy hour soon.
(4)Amber M.
I love a good Mexican street taco. Agave is a great little spot in Wash Park with outdoor seating, decent tacos, and okay service. The location is great and I think it adds to the charm of this little neighborhood gem. As far as the food goes, the quinoa taco is a must! Pass on the fish/halibut taco- it's okay, not great. The guac was really good, but the quantity was so-so. Overall, a solid three stars. I'll be back for drinks and food and re-review.
(3)Suzy S.
How this place isn't a solid 5 stars is beyond me. We eat here 2 - 4 times a week and have never been disappointed. Everything is made from scratch. The salsas are unreal. I wake up craving their salsa verde. The only salsa I don't love is the habanero pico because it's just waaaay to hot for this gringo. Their taco choices are inventive and flavorful. I have a hard time choosing between the quinoa, cactus leaf, chicken tinga....so I usually get one of each. The there is the jalapeño infused tequila they use in their margaritas....mmmm

My sister and I headed to brunch at Agave Taco Bar around noon on a Saturday after purchasing a living social deal. The decor is fun- glass garage style sliding doors, exposed brick and bright, lively colors. The brunch menu was filled with different tacos as well as entrees. We decided to start with a guac and chips. Our waiter told us it would be the best guac we ever had, and it was quite delicious and very fresh. The chips were also fresh, hot and salty- just how we like them. My sister ordered the breakfast burrito and I ordered the huevos divorciados. The entrees were huge but so delicious that we couldn't help but completely devour them. The different salsas on the huevos divorciados were fresh and exploding with flavor; my taste buds were very happy. After we started eating, more guests staring coming in and things started to get kind of tight. Within inches of the back of my chair was a little baby in a high chair that I had to carefully navigate around when leaving; my sister had to do the same with a table of elders directly behind her. Other than the cramped tables, the food was delicious and the service was very friendly. We definitely plan on going back- and next time I'll have an agua fresca!

Terrible unbelievably horrible service OR wait NO SERVICE ..... I am a WP local ... And it's just a sad state of affairs that a places entire staff fell SO short ... Wouldn't know how the food or drinks taste ..... Nope !!!

YUMMMMMM!!! The man and I just moved here from Texas and have been looking for a place with SPICE in their food for a long time. Super excited we came across this taco bar. Stopped in to check it out for brunch, and we will definitely be back. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla, which came with some super spicy delicious salsa of some sort... I just couldn't get enough of it. But anyways, we sat at the bar and had a delightful conversation with the bar tender while we were there. Overall, a wonderful place!

The food gets 4 stars. Nice selection of various "street style" tacos that are prepared well. The margaritas aren't too sweet, but more of what you'd expect in Mexico rather than a sickly sweet frozen marg. Sadly, the service is borderline awful. It took several minutes to get an order in, then several more just to get water and our drinks. Eventually our tacos came, and we asked the server about our chips and salsa and she gave a blank look and said she forgot to put them in. We liked the food so much we ordered more but not once was our water or drinks re-filled. I was never asked if I wanted another margarita (Which was especially stupid. Any server worth anything knows alcohol is the easiest way to get that ticket price point higher for a better tip.) All in all, good potential and good food but the service needs help.

I am breaking my yelp review virginity just to reflect on this terrible experience. I'd like to quickly play a game of "imagine that": Have you ever thought to yourself, "ya know, I wish I just ordered chips and left?" Have you ever wondered, "is this chicken in my vegetarian taco?" Or have you been asked by your watiress, "who ordered the traditional margarita" and the answer was, "no one?" Well if you haven't and our looking for a magical experience like the one described above, then Agave Taco Bar is your best bet! I went here for my birthday dinner solely because of its proximity to Wash Park. Regardless of the fact that there were three people working six filled tables that night (one waitress, one bartender and a cook), the service was so slow. I think I had a second birthday while sitting in my seat waiting for our chips and margaritas. The chips were good. But that was about it. My $9 margarita was small and average. The guacamole was good but the smallest serving I've ever seen (and garnished with EXTRA FREE CHIPS - oh geeze how special!). The group ordered tacos. Tacos took another year (making me now 26 by the end of the dinner). However, I believe the reason they took so long was because the cook and waiter had to carefully reassemble our orders to totally mind f*** us (#taco roulette). Out of the six of us, three people got the wrong tacos including a vegetarian who was given a chicken taco. When said vegetarian told our waitress there was chicken in her veggie taco, the owner (?)/ bartender (?) was kind enough to take the taco, taste it privately, confirm to us that the hardened chicken was actually hard cheese! PHEW! He graciously offered the taco back to my friend; she denied his thoughtfulness. Overall, this expensive taco meal from hell has confirmed that I will never return to Agave taco bar . For all those reading, save your money and go to the other delicious taco joints in Denver -- i.e. Los Chingones (Pig ear nachos, say what?), Pinche Tacos (pork belly num nums) and La Comida at the Source (gridddddled tacos).

If you want good Mexican food and good margs in Colorado go anywhere else. If you want hipsters and overpriced squash tacos with tasteless salsa and margaritas, this is your place. This place is home to the worst margarita I have ever had and marks the first time I have ever sent a drink back. I have not ever sent back a drink before, that is how bad it was. The one I ordered tasted like lime juice squeezed into water with some ice. I could not drink it. I sent it back and got a different kind of margarita and it tasted like lime juice squeezed into water with some ice in it. It felt like someone was playing a joke on me. Then the tacos came and I now understand why most Mexican restaurants don't put cactus leaves, Squash and pineapple into tacos.

Tacos are great. Tasty with a good variety. But the real deal is 2 tacos for $2 between 2:00 and 2:59. WHAT A DEAL. I love the service here, so I don't understand the other reviews. And I've been at least five times. Margs are pretty good (strong). And $3 after 3 o'clock. Clearly you can see I love a good deal and this place does it well.

Agave right now seems to fall in the middle road of taco places. I was not blown away by the food or disappointed by it. We started with some chips, guacamole and salsa. The guacamole seemed to fall in that middle road. The salsas were mostly a let down. The Molcajete had a weird consistency and lacked flavor. The habanero pic de gallo lacked the habaneros. The grilled peach and chipotle salsa was the standout. It had great flavor and really stood out. Even though with this salsa I think they are using canned peaches. I do hope I am wrong on this fact. The tacos were on the smaller side compared to other taco places. We ordered the Rajas, Arrachera, Nopalitos and the Pastor. The combination of ingredients on the tacos seemed to work well and brought the whole taco together. The seasoning seems to need a little refining. The Nopalitos was overwhelmed by the oregano and the other flavors were just there for the show. The meat on the Arrachera and Pastor was more on the bland side and needed some seasoning to make it shine. I do think it is worth checking out since they just opened. Scale of 1-100- 80

Awesome place! Great staff, tasty food, and refreshing drinks. I recently moved to this neighborhood and have found myself coming back again and again to Agave. First off, they have a beautiful bar made out of refurbished wood. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it never takes more than a few seconds stepping inside to be greeted by their staff. Shannon and Joe, two of the bartenders/servers, are awesome! Very friendly and attentive. They always makes sure we have full drinks and a clear table. Now on to the food. Some reviews say the prices are too high for tacos. I understand if this was a Mexican chain, ya the prices would be ridiculous. But its not. It's a unique take on Mexican street tacos. And the tacos are freaking delicious! Also their Queso Fondido con Chorizo is glorious. Enough for two people to share as a snack or appetizer, and they do not skimp on the meat. As for margaritas, I have tried about 4 of them now and they are all great. The watermelon is very refreshing on a hot day. My favorite is the one with hibiscus and prickly pear, just the right combo of sweet and tartness. My boyfriend loves the cucumber one using the infused jalapeno tequila. If you are worried about the price, come any day of the week during the 2 o'clock hour. They have a special, 2 tacos for $2! Plus happy hour starts at 3, so if you stay long enough you can eat and drink for very little.

I came here with a friend who has been raving about the amazing jalapeño margaritas and food. We were both incredibly disappointed in the cocktails, food and service. I will not go back unless I'm in the mood for a beer and am willing to wait 20 minutes to get one.

Great new neighborhood taco joint! From breakfast through dinner the entire menu offers delicious Mexican options. I live one block from Old South Gaylord street and this is my new favorite spot. Not sure why the harsh reviews on service. I've been probably 10 times since it opened and the service and food has always been outstanding. The El Rapido breakfast burrito is my favorite as well as the chicken tinga taco. Guacamole is fresh as are the house-made tortillas. But the best part of Agave are the stiff and tasty margs, which the bar staff will custom make to your liking. I will continue to return and very glad Wash Park now has a street taco spot within stumbling distance for the locals!

I really wanted this to be the good neighborhood taco joint. I called around 4pm on Friday and made a reservation for 6 people at 6:30. No problem easy enough and we will see you then they said. It should have been a sign that when we walked in they told us that our party had already been seated and we should go join, which was a table full of strangers, which happened after 10 minutes of standing around. After they made the strangers moved we were sat at a table that hadn't been wiped down in quite a while. It took about another 10 minutes of waiting for our waitress to come to the table. She was less than enthusiastic to be there. We ordered the Chips, Guac, and Salsa sampler as well as the Queso Fondido. I had to remind the waitress that we would like to order some margaritas which seemed like a surprise to her. The quac and chips came out relatively quick but there was no salsa. After the waitress basically threw the chips and guac on the table I asked if we could get some waters while waiting for our drinks. 10 min later, no drinks, no salsa, and no water. after about 15min she came back with 4 water glasses with 4 ice cubes each and a half bottle of water, not enough for even two glasses. I also noticed that my glass was filthy. The next time I saw the waitress I asked for a new glass. What I got in return was the same glass, just RE-FILLED. As the waitress was working I kept looking at the bar to see if our drinks were up, the bartender was just standing around. After being seated for almost 40min our margarita's (3 house and one strawberry) finally hit the table and they were awful. I would have loved some margarita with my tequila. At this point we still did not have salsa and we were out of chips, and still missing the Queso. After about an hour total of being sat we finally got the Queso, which clearly had died in the window and was the consistency of a warm bike tire. That was the last straw. We immediately closed out, left the bad margs and queso on the table and went across the street where we were treated above and beyond compared to what we got at Agave. I wish I could review the tacos be we never had a chance to order them. And I can't blame just the waitress because the restaurant hired her. I asked some friends in the neighborhood if they have been to Agave and they all said yes with a resounding "it's awful." Hopefully they turn it around or somebody else moves in to be the taco joint of Wash Park.

First time today for lunch. Pricey for what you get. Chips, guac & salsa for $8.95? Salsa is uninspired and flat. Every other Mexican restaurant includes chips & real salsa with your dinner. I don't get the miniature tacos for premium price and that includes the tasty margaritas in the over sized shot glasses. 2 of us had 2 (cold) tacos each, 2 margaritas, the chips, guac & salsas for $61.00! No wonder the place was almost empty on a Friday at lunch. Too bad as I was really looking forward to this experience. Service was good and friendly.

I love this place! Great margs and tacos. Look for the special tacos, always outstanding. Carrie is the best server, plus she's easy on the eyes! Travis rocks and is always there to ensure a great visit! Try the "waterpeno" marg!
(5)Danielle D.
Good addition to Gaylord St restaurants. Had a great variety of tacos, nice that you can order all different types, and they all come out on one big platter. It was a fun atmosphere with very friendly staff. Margaritas were strong, but good. Will definitely go backk
(4)Kevin B.
The rating would have been better if the situation that occurred with one (1) of the street tacos ordered by our party had been handled better by management. Our group really enjoyed the tacos, from the lengua to the adobada, as well as the margaritas, from the house to hibiscus - until a foreign object was found in one (1) of the tacos. The situation could have been handled better & a return visit is very doubtful.

So, this review might be influenced by the fact that it was a 60 degree Friday afternoon in December and we were able to sit outside on their sidewalk patio AND watermelon margaritas were involved. As a frequenter of Illegal Pete's, it was nice to have Mexican done very differently (than Pete's). Their queso was more like a chili. A very cheesy, amazing chili. They serve their queso with soft tortillas but they brought us tortilla chips upon request which was a great call on my friend's part. Their tacos had lots of traditional ingredients (lime, cotiga, jalepenos) etc. All in all it was a great little lunch spot.

Agave is right down the street from my work and a prime location for anyone visiting the Gaylord Shopping area. They have a great selection of tacos and always a fun special going on. I appreciate the specialty tacos vs. the typical shredded chicken or beef, and I HIGHLY recommend the Jalapeno Marg!!

cute and yum! a small, casual cafe where the drinks are strong and the tacos are delicious and inventive. i ordered two gourmet tacos- "rajas con queso" and "quinoa con elote." both were tasty and had some good kick. our waitress was attentive and accommodating.. noticing that i kept my jacket on, she volunteered to turn up the heat up a notch or two. my one criticism (sign of the times), was that cell service is pretty much null and void while inside the restaurant. fair enough, keeps rude people like me off their phones. but hey, i was only trying to do a "check-in" to tell people how great the place is. ;) a perfect little spot for lunch. i look forward to returning.

This was the worst experience I had in Denver. We walked in and nobody greeted us although servers or managers were standing around. We sat at an empty dirty table at the entrance. Nobody came to clean the table. Nobody even acknowledged that we were there. After waiting for someone to serve us we finally got up and ordered from the bar. The manager with black rim glasses and very short hair brought the margaritas over and when I said "Thank You" he replied with an "uh huh"!!! This was the rudest bunch of servers I have EVER encountered!!!!! If I was the owner of this place I would be very concerned about the way my restaurant is being presented. It is time someone told the front of house that they are servers and there to serve the customer. So disappointed in this place. One thing if you are bad at your job but being bluntly rude to a customer is NOT what a nice restaurant like this should consider a norm.

Went to lunch here with a couple of girl friends. Veggie options are tasty and the guacamole was fresh and yummy. We will go back ,

It is a cool, hip place...and a bit cozy. The food was fair, but the value for what you get isn't great. The house margarita was good, but the watermellon margartia didn't have a lot of flavor. I expected it to be a bit more flavorful (sweeter?) I hope for good value for for street tacos but, as others mentioned, the bill can add up quick. Chips & salsa, a small taco, and a marg and you're already over $15. The food wasn't that special and the steak taco was overcooked. For me, it might be fun for a happy hour margartia and a bite, but it won't be a regular choice on my list for dining. The atmosphere is there, but the food and the prices are not.

First time here on Saturday for brunch. It's a bright and airy place, the tacos are fun and varied. I had a lengua taco along with a chorizo and egg taco (hey, it was brunch). The lengua was tender and terrific. The chorizo and egg was flavorful. My wife had the el minuto breakfast burrito, and loved every bite. We split an order of chips and salsas (the tomatillo was my favorite), and shared a flan for dessert. Friendly, efficient and attentive service from Monica. A really enjoyable, laid back experience, made even more memorable when we saw the couple making out at their table sneak off to the restroom together.

Way to ghetto up the neighborhood guys! From the blaring music starting an hour and a half before they open until an hour after they close to the gaudy Colfax Ave. banners to the after hours parties the employees throw until 1am, where they laugh about spiking the dog water bowls (NOT cool!), these guys are the worst addition to Old South Gaylord in over a decade. But, hey, the margaritas are cheap, right?
(1)Mike J.
After a first unsuccessful experience (probably because it was right after it opened) we decided to give it a second try (a few months after it opened) with the hope that they had time to fix the problems that every new restaurant have. Again we were really excited to go, especially because we live two blocks away, and S Gaylord needed a Taco/Margarita cozy bar. However, we were dissapoinment was terrible again. Bad service, the sides (rice and beens) are super small, and served in this tin cups and.....I have to say it again but the service just SUCKS. Not even a busy night but had to wait forever for the drinks and 6 tacos.

New spot in the neighborhood and we were psyched to try it out. Very poor service! We had planned to stay for dinner but left after drinks with chips and salsa. I also saw a waitress take a sip out of a drink before giving it to a customer - she left the straw in the drink and delivered it. I thought that was weird. Tattooed bartender was also serving coworkers while our drink order took about 15-20 minutes. Good layout and the salsa was ok, but we won't be back.
(2)Sheri L.
Bad service. Good, yet overpriced food. Our server forgot half our order. Nice. Additionally, the server was eating fast food (from a paper bag) and doing paperwork a few tables away. Not going back. Really disappointed.
(2)David M.
The tacos are good but a little pricey, understandable for the high rent neighborhood though. Freshly made tortillas are a nice touch. I recommend the carnitas and lengua tacos. They also make a tasty sangria. The service was friendly and my waiter was attentive but not overly so. The airy open layout is reminiscent of a beachside restaurant and makes me feel like I'm on vacation in Mexico even if only for an hour. I plan on returning for the daily 3-6 happy hour. You won't be disappointed.

Wow! This was the worst dining experience we have ever had! The place smelled bad when we walked in the door, Marg's so bad we could not even drink them, followed by cold, horrible tasting food. We were shocked and could not wait to get the taste out of our mouths. Normally, I would not post a negative response but this place was so bad - I feel compelled to share. Diners Beware!
(1)Stacy S.
I'm not one to write bad reviews, but today's lunch experience was about as bad as it gets. We mentioned to our waitress that we were under a time crunch so we ordered our drinks right away. Didn't get the ice tea and pepsi until almost 10 minutes later (they were not that busy). We asked for sweet and low and received the sugar box with no sweet and low so brought it to their attention and they didn't offer any, we got the impression that they didn't have any, but 5 minutes later a different waitress came out with Equal. I ordered the Carnitas Huarache that looked impressive, but underneath the cheese and cabbage was extremely dry, at times crunchy and hard carnitas that I couldn't eat. I ate the toppings, a few slices of avocado, and some cheese and that's about all that was appealing. When our waitress asked how our food was, I was honest and said the carnitas were extremely dry and basically recieved a response that it is normally dry and she nonchalantly walked away. $40 later we were ready to go and will never look back. Too bad, it looked like a cute place.

Agave is amazing! Finally a true to form, fresh, healthy and delicious taco concept comes to Denver! I live in the neighborhood and now having frequented Agave 6 or so times, I can speak to almost all items on the menu. Agave offers a wide variety of taco options including various pork (al pastor is a fave) and chicken (tinga -spicy pulled chicken - and pollo chile relleno are awesome), steak, shrimp, fresh fish of the day, and even vegetarian (try the rajas!). I haven't tried a taco I didn't think beat out the Highlands and Cherry Creek "competition" hands down. And all the tacos are served on homemade corn torillas which is a hard find. The margarita menu is pretty killer and you can have everything from the traditional to a jalapeno infused marg or even fresh watermelon margs! I love the agua frescas (fresh fruit and water drinks) as I hadn't seen them anywhere else. Try them spiked! These guys have hit the nail on the head w/Agave. The staff is great, always friendly, and the location itself with the open garage doors make it a great summer spot to grab a bite morning, afternoon or night. Check it out for sure :)
(5)Lisa B.
We gave this place two tries & both times felt exactly the same. The atmosphere is nice on a warm day with the garage doors open. The house margarita was good...not too sweet just like we like them. The salsas were good. The tacos were fair to poor. Both times my husband was disappointment to get cold tacos. The fish was served to him ice cold & the carnitas were overcooked & cold. But the thing about this place that is SO bizarre is that the service is STRANGE! It is not warm, friendly or even slightly welcoming. Sad, becasue it is a cute little place. It is as though they purposely avoid making eye contact with you & you have to BEG & wave your hands around like an idiot to get someone to come to your table. This was the same on both occasions. We were trying to politely get's anyone's attention so we could pay our bill but they were all doing there side work, rolling silverware with their backs to us, chatting with each other & staring at the world cup on tv. Anything that we got to actually arrive at our table took a good effort by us having seek someone out & ASK. Not once did anyone stop by our table to check on our needs & I am truly not a high maintenance person. If I could go back there & make my own drink, or grab another napkin, or refill my chips, I would, but that might be frowned upon. It was really pretty ridiculous. Work on your service & get the food to the table when it is at least warm & you might have a chance, but 2 visits is enough for me

We went into Agave for our first time last weekend. My whole family couldn't say enough about the queso and guacamole appetizers. They were both fresh and the guacamole was made right before their eyes. My children ate their kids tacos that were out of this world. The portions were very generous. I had their ceviche' which was fabulous. The last time I had ceviche' that good was at a 5 * resort in MX. I also had their fish tacos (California sea bass that day), a generous portion and so delicious it makes me want to go back now. The hand made corn tortillas were one of my favorite parts and they don't break apart when eating the taco. Most places in Denver don't hand make their tortillas right in front of you and the kids thought it was cool too. Service was excellent and I strongly recommend their watermelon margarita!!
(5)Jeff H.
I went to Agave yesterday for lunch had 2 street tacos and chips and salsa. The food was as authentic as it gets. The tortilla's and chips were hand made so I was told and they tasted like it. Wash Park has needed an authentic Mexican restaurant for some time and this place is all that and more. I look forward to going back.
(5)Cody B.
Tacos were very good. Had the Al Pastor and Arrachera. The rice was a little soggy but had good flavor. Ate there for lunch so I want to go back to try one of the Margaritas.

Rating could be a lot higher if they would get a decent bartender. Food gets 4 stars and service 1 star. We have been several times and love the tacos and margs as well as chips with various salsa options. Recently, we dropped in for a quick early bite and it was still happy hour!! Yay! A nice server came over within a few minutes to give us water, menus and let us know that our server, the bartender, would be right over. Apparently right over means 10 minutes?? I would not have even minded the wait if she had been even slightly pleasant or nice when she finally arrived at the table. I ordered a happy hour Margarita and when my boyfriend, who does not drink, said he was fine with water. She said, "What? You aren't going to have anything besides water" and made a very rude face! Really lady? You have no right to judge a customer for not wanting to have alcohol. Very disappointing. Well, needless to say it just got worse from there. I asked her what is on the happy hour nachos and she replied "nacho stuff". Really? I asked her if she could tell me if there are veggies on them because there is no description on the menu. She said "yeah its on the menu.... right there rajas". Ok, well I don't speak Spanish so I again politely asked what types of veggies come on there or is it just chips cheese and meat? She said "yes". Frustrated at this point, I said we will just take the chips n salsa then. She rolled her eyes and stormed off. We are supposed to pick 3 salsas choices with this so she had not even finished taking our order at this point. Let me stop here and say the place was not even busy. There were 2 people at the bar, on table with 4 adults and 2 kids next to us that she was also waiting on. Several open tables and bar stools. The other server was hanging around chatting with the bus staff, Not busy at all since it was 5:30 on a Saturday. 'So, I honestly don't know what her deal is? I really think that my BF not ordering a drink set her off for some reason? If she's worried about the size of the tab and her tip.... then just being pleasant would go farther than adding drinks to the tab. Waited a few minutes and she did not come back to finish our order so I walked up to the bar she was complaining about "happy hour customers" to the other server. As soon as she saw me, she stopped and completely changed her tone to over nice. She was over the top nice and finished our order at the bar. Didn't want to make a scene or ruin my BF's night but really we should have left at that point. Margarita was awful and she did not check back on our dinner order until we were almost finished with our tacos. Tacos were delicious as usual. I will be making a call to the manager today but honestly if you show up and see a tattoo'd blonde bartender.... RUN! Save yourself the frustration and head over to "Una Mas" Taco Bar just a few blocks away on South Pearl/Iowa. Same owners as Kaos Pizza with great food, drinks and service!!!
(2)Travis T.
The flavors and atmosphere were great but that doesn't make up for the high prices and light pours. My friends and I split chips and salsa, nine tacos and 4 margaritas which totaled $85 after tip. This would be understandable if the tacos lasted longer than one or two bites and the drinks packed any punch other than the juices used to make them. Looking forward to a redemptive happy hour if they choose to offer one.

UNDERWHELMED...NOT A GOOD NIGHT... Like stated in the other reviews, we too live roughly 2 blocks from South Gaylord. When we heard a taco place was opening up in the location of the old Local & Dino's Soda bar, we were thrilled. Unfortunately, our first visit will end up being our last. We got there around 5 pm. The place wasn't very crowd. Not knowing what to do, my family of 4 walked in and were somewhat ignored by all the Agave employees. After a few minutes of looking around for a host stand, I literally had to step in front of an employee to ask where to sit. We eventually sat down outside, which was nice. 20 minutes later, finally a waitress asked if we had been helped yet. My wife and I ordered two of the special watermelon margaritas, as well as chips, 3 salsa varieties, 6 different tacos, and 2 Niño's quesadillas. We were UNDERWHELMED by everything. The watermelon margaritas tasted gross, salsa options and varieties were weird, and the tacos were WAY smaller than what you see at any taco place. The tacos only had meat...no cheese, no lettuce/cilantro, no anything. We also ordered the churros and chocolate abuel, which was very tasty. HOWEVER, $85 and 3 hours later, my wife and daughter were puking their guts out non-stop. I was on the toilet for 90 minutes in agonizing pain, and my other daughter was screaming and yelling at me to get done because she also had diarrhea (we only have 3 bathrooms in our house... which itself is a problem with 3 females in our home). Needless to say, we did not have a good night. I guess we'll be hitting up Rievers, iL Vicino's, and Max's more often. I would have given Agave ZERO stars if it was possible. Oh well. If history repeats itself, Agave will be something else in 3-4 years. Guess we'll have to wait till then...
